All officers were present. There were 27 members present. There were several guests present. First was Al Jones who has a 1965 Monza. Second were Paul Clifford with his daughter and son, Libby and Danny. They are the proud owners of Steve and Rita's Lakewood. A number of members are already on their way to the Fan Belt Toss. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $1,053.98 in the regular checking account and $4,676.70 in the GMAC fund for a total worth of $5,730.68. Robert Gold was out of town during the last Car Council meeting and Geoffrey Johnson went in his stead. The Car Council felt that the swap meet was all right but was not as good as expected. It was probably too far out of town. They have agreed to hold the spring show at the Albuquerque museum for the next three years. There is a full report on line in the club web site. Robert Gold hopes to make the next meeting. Upcoming events include the CNM Ladies meeting at Ruth Boydstons on the 8th, The Potluck and Auction on the 15th at House of Covers, the CNM breakfast at the Owl Cafe on the 22nd, and the Christmas Dinner at the KAFB on December the 7th. Jerry Goffe brought up that this is a great time of the year to take a tour of the Bosque. The Festival of the Cranes is the 15th to 21st, too tight to plan this now this year, but the board will consider at the next meeting a trip in December or January. Members were reminded of the board meeting on 11/19/03 at House of Covers, to which all members are invited, and the next regular meeting on 12/3/03. There being no further old business, the next subject was the CNM 30th Anniversary celebration in March of next year. We need volunteers to head this function. They need to find a place to have the dinner and celebration. If the meal is not too expensive, the Treasurer has suggested that CNM fund all or part of the meal. The board has agreed to this. Other committees that need to be set up are for the Bylaw and Constitution review, Sylvan has volunteered to be on this, the Awards committee, and the Membership Care Committee. Rita Gongora has been taking care of the latter, but should have some help. She shouldn't have to do it all by herself. This brought up the announcement that Bill McClellan's wife, Marian, had fallen and broken her hip and is in the hospital. Bill is pretty much lost. Ruth Boydston will take care of flowers. Robert Gold suggested that CNM members help Jim on the newsletter by making contributions. He suggested "Corvair Catastrophes" as an ongoing entry, because everyone has some story of what has happened "out of the blue" on a trip. Wendell said that he and Joe Trujillo had gone to the old auto salvage lot on I-40 East of Moriarty. They wanted $1500 for all of the Corvairs but they would sell parts. Wendell got two excellent bumpers with guards plus lot of other stuff for a song. I remember that lot from back in the 40's when I used to pass it on Old "66" when I was on my way from Roswell to Albuquerque. The meeting was adjourned at 20:00. This was followed by a very interesting and informative slide show and talk by Larry Blair about his two tours in Viet Nam as a Combat Engineer. =CNM= NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING MINUTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 17:20 at House of Covers. Present were Jim Pittman, Joel Nash, Wendell Walker, Steve Gongora, Marl Domzalski, Sally Johnson, Geoffrey Johnson and Chuck Vertrees. Sally reported that we should remember the breakfast at the Owl Cafe Saturday morning. She also has breakfast meetings set up for December and January. These will also be at the Owl Cafe. Other possible venues were discussed. Sally is planning to have the breakfast meetings on the Saturday following the board meeting. She is trying to get continuity in our monthly presentations. The next several months will be on bodywork. Next meeting Geoffrey will give a presentation on air nibblers. Possibly we will have a tour of a body shop in February. Other plans will be mentioned later. Secretary, Chuck Vertrees, announced that he would be out of town for the December board meeting, the January regular meeting and possibly the January board meeting. He and Julia are going on a 24-day cruise from South Africa, to Antarctica and South America. Wendell announced that CNM made $420.00 at the auction held in conjunction with the November potluck. Also, that we have $1,432.36 in the regular checking account, $4,676.70 in the GMAC account for a total of $6,109.06. The December Christmas dinner is on track. Everything is set. The membership chairman was not present but it was reported that the Clifford family that bought the Gongora Lakewood, were at the last meeting. They probably would have joined but there was no time because they had to leave early. Geoffrey said that he would go to the next Car Council meeting if Robert Gold is not in town. No report on the CNM Ladies' meetings. We will have a special newsletter in March 2004. Jim will set a deadline for items he will need. Please help if you are asked. Sally is working on a schedule for presentations at out membership meeting. She hopes to get caught up on her phone time. There is nothing new on the Membership and Family Care Committee. Mark has not been able to find a chair. E-mail seems to be working right now, so we will table the idea for a while. The Bylaws and Constitution Review Committee consists of Bill Reider and Sylva Zuercher. It was suggested that Larry Hickerson might be a good person to have on this committee. Mark will contact him. The Award Committee consists of Sylvan Zuercher and Wendell Walker at this time. It was brought up that the 2003 Misner award will be given at the Christmas dinner. We need to follow up with the past recipients and see where they are in preparation. The last three recipients are Rita Gongora, Ollie Scheflow and Anna Mae Gold. Next was the CNM activity schedule. December will be the Christmas Dinner. January with a possible Bosque Tour. February with possibly a garage tour to a body shop, maybe at Galles, or a progressive dinner. The progressive dinner will pop up as a possibility in several places in the schedule. March is the 30th Anniversary Dinner, and we may have a tech session if the weather is nice. Maybe a Turquoise Trail Tour in April. May is the Tri State and the Museum Car Show. They do not conflict this year. Last year June was the Camp Out at Ruth's. We need to check with her and see what would work this year. July has the International Convention and the July 4th Car Show in Santa Fe. August will be one of two possibilities, a dinner at the Domzalski's in Placitas or a progressive dinner. September can have either or both the State Fair Show and or an Aspencade. Then it was decided to try an Aspencade in October. November will be our potluck and auction and December our Christmas dinner. It was decided that we needed an activity every second or third month, which would be a family activity. The Anniversary dinner committee is Mark Domzalski, Anna Mae Gold, Rita Gongora, Sally Johnson and Ruth Boydston. We need for the next board meeting; a possible location for the dinner, an agenda, an emcee and what recognition and awards will be given. Steve will look into the possibility of getting a CNM seal embosser so that a gold seal could be put on our future awards. Wendell said that we are accumulating a considerable amount in the checking account, and should we transfer some into the GMAC fund. It was decided that since we would probably pay for all or a part or all the cost of the 30th dinner, we would wait until after the dinner. The possibility was discussed of checking with our new member about the availability of some club decals. We could order a batch and have them available for new members. Also it was asked if it was time to consider ordering some new CNM shirts and jackets. We will bring this up at the next meeting and see if enough members are interested to make it worthwhile. The meeting was adjourned at 18:17. =CNM= REBUILT & RESTORED Mark Domzalski November 19, 2003 Only a month to go in this year... The older I get the faster time seems to pass. The Fan Belt Toss in Palm Springs was great. Plenty of parts and lots of great folks including CNM's own: Sylvan , LeRoy, Del, Dave, Tarmo & Kay, Francesca & Ediya (sp?) and my better half, Elizabeth. Richard and Gayle, where were you? We didn't see you with the "Whales" this year. Hope all is well. The weather was cooler than usual and there was enough overcast that I didn't get my end of the year "burn." Based on my recollection from years past, I think the used parts supply is starting to dwindle. Sheet metal is starting to show up cleaned and powder coated which is in alignment with increasing prices for Corvair parts. If you are looking for the "good deals" on Corvair parts, it's probably time to consider a trip to the Toss next year. Those hard to find parts are getting harder to find.... I'll miss our December meeting due to business travel, but Elizabeth and I will definitely be at the Christmas Dinner at the Kirtland AFB Officers Club on December 7. I am informed that the Christmas Elves are working hard to make a memorable occasion for all of us and especially the children who will be in our company for our annual holiday repast. You will be hearing more about the CNM 30th Anniversary Banquet in the next few months. I am in the process of assembling the committee that will ensure our celebration will befitting our venerable CORSA Chapter. Your Board has agreed that there should be a special anniversary edition for the 30th. I have personally promised to spell anniversary correctly if I assist in any newsletter production activities like I did for the 25th Anniversary Edition. I am sure Editor Emeritus Jim will be asking for information and historical perspective in the near future. I'm sure the special edition will be the best yet. Watch out for information on our January chapter activity. We'll be going to Bosque del Apache for a visit with the Cranes, Geese, Eagles, Hawks, Harriers, Cormorants, Ducks, Shovelers, Herons, Egrets, Pheasants, and a bunch more birds I can't think of at this point. Plus Deer, Coyote, Badger, and other mammals. If you have any interest in nature and particularly birds, this should be an enjoyable and specie filled day. As I draw this month's column to a close, Elizabeth and I would like to wish all of you an enjoyable and memorable Christmas. And, in case our newsletter doesn't get to you before the New Year, a safe and prosperous 2004. See you in the Leap Year, if not before! =CNM= STILL FULLA GAS ... PALM SPRINGS Del Patton So you have never been to the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet?? You really need to make it at least once. And at least once drive it in a Corvair. And if you are really brave, take your significant other... or your mother who certainly is a significant other but not the one I was thinking of... get more coverage on the credit card though! There is good shopping for both sexes in that town... heck, even Tarmo can find something to buy there!! I think this last trip though he was ducking me. I talked to him there and we walked around and admired the wares but his hands were never full. Mine were on the other hand and that is an advantage to parking on the field...you can lose the evidence quickly! Oh, you didn't know that this event, for the last few year anyway, takes place on the Angels spring practice fields?? Heck, you can even camp there if you drive your Ultravan.... Speaking of which, I missed Richard and Gayle Finch who usually are parked on the field in their Ultravan... someone told me he was off boring, I mean speaking to, airplane builders that want to use a Corvair engine. Sounds interesting... wonder if he can condense that down to 20 minutes for an after the meeting discussion?? Maybe the new VP can look into that?? Well, back to parts, which some argue are just parts but we know better don't we?!! I found some good buys and even a new ad I didn't have and of course took lots of pictures... none of people though, just cars and well, parts!! Geoff and Sally roamed the field like a pair of hungry coyotes snapping up various and assorted ignition parts from various and assorted vendors and doing on field R&R trying to find the ultimate cause of the many stops we made on the trip out with them!! I think the only thing they didn't try was the pomegranate jelly (yes, that is always available if you get there early... and for 2 bucks is a great bargain). I hear tell that on the way back, they came to the conclusion that it was a broken rocker all the time!! Geoff is never dismayed though, just bottoms up and into whatever he thinks needs to be fixed. Other than his assorted problems on the way there, we had a great drive... maybe Sally is right and you can do that route in 10 hours but not if you caravan with her brother!! Certainly you can if her mother is driving, right Geoff??!! Waffle Houses are great places to stop for a bite to eat late at night... and there's a great rest stop right out of Phoenix for sleeping off the Waffle House late night snack. Bob Ballew was on the field with his latest demonstrations of obscure Corvair facts... I have often wondered whether they are facts unless Bob is looking for them but since Bob Helt had put him up to some of those investigations, I will assume that my ignorance isn't bliss for anyone else... at least not the two Bobs! Those gizmos he comes up with are worth the trip folks, trust me! And there was even another purple and white Corvair there... and no, it didn't have a pink interior either!! Happy Thanksgiving!! At our meeting treasurer Will said we had $8360 to spend or save. Was this before or after writing checks of $7831 to CORSA, $1000 to CPF, $250 to San Diego's Rescue-921 and $250 to the Michelle Goffe Foundation? Bill said the NMCCC's swap meet was a modest success. We planned an ethnic dinner for November 17th and a Christmas dinner at Bella Vista for December 7th. Steve reported that 15 people went on the Embudo Station Fall Tour and the lunch was great. Larry previewed the January carburetor rebuild session and encouraged members to order the parts they'd need. Mark said the GWFBT&SM in Palm Springs, California was great as usual. Debbie said there were still plenty of CORSA Cookbooks. Bill announced that the CORSA Technical Guide supplement was now available and he was taking orders. Otto Mechanic learned about the Gold Rush, Mark thanked Jim for some 18 years of editing, and Heula found a special Holiday Puzzle Page for our playtime pleasure. The 1996 Newsletter Index closed out the year, the issue and Volume 22 of our club publication. Fourteen Years Ago - December 1989 - Volume 15 - Number 12 Santa's sleigh (magnified from a commemorative postage stamp) and twelve tiny reindeer adorned our cover. The treasurer reported $754 in the bank. Members were asked to participate in the Veterans' Day parade starting at the Classic Hotel. Our Christmas Party was planned for the County Line restaurant. Val Vaughn said he'd take on publication of the newsletter to give Sylvan a break. Tom Martin's column "La Ventana" profiled our founding member from Nebraska, Francis Boydston, who at that time claimed to have owned over 250 running cars and one Ultravan. A technical article told us why 95s are not Corvairs (they were officially listed as Chevrolet trucks) and the issue wrapped up with the 1989 index. Twenty-one Years Ago - December 1982 - Volume 8 Number 12 The cover featured Mark Morgan's fantasy race car "The Spirit of Claunch" sponsored by Coors, Koni and CNM. The November meeting was at Carrow's since the Ed Black"s meeting room was locked. Rear axles were featured in our tech talk: George Morin described earlys and Bill Reider described lates. A few members went on a tour to Roswell. We discussed asking for the 1987 CORSA Convention for Albuquerque. LeRoy reported that the board had plans for 11 events for next year. An article from The Car Exchange, July 1982 described a front-wheel-drive roadster powered by Corvair. The designer, Bob Temple, had tried to get General Motors interested in it twenty years earlier without success. An article from Rocky Mountain Classic Chevy Club compared automobile maintenance requirements from the 30s, 40s, 50s to those of modern cars. Twenty-eight Years Ago - December 1975 - Volume 1 Number 11 New president Sylvan Zuercher grinned on the cover. Guests were Anna Gould and Loretta Keller. (Were there spelling errors?) We discussed achieving 100% CORSA membership in order to become chartered; benefits would include insurance coverage for local events. Bill ran a clean air clinic after the meeting, testing two Corvairs for emissions. We has shiny new CNM front license plates for sale at $2.50 each. Jack Sellers reported on using GE silicone to help seal O-rings. Jim's rally cartoon was published in the October CORSA Communique. Discussions were under way with members of Rocky Mountain CORSA for an inter- chapter event to be held in the vicinity of Trinidad, Colorado or Raton, New Mexico. Yes, this eventually happened, resulting in our traditional spring event known as the Tri-State Meet. Finally, a questionnaire to find out more about our membership was included and members were encouraged to let our officers know what was expected of the club. =CNM= WINTERIZING YOUR CORVAIR by Steve Goodman Denvair News - Rocky Mountain CORSA This morning on the Channel 7 News the talk was about carrying a trunk full of stuff to save yourself this winter. All of it was good advice; things like jumper cables, extra windshield washer solvent, gloves, kitty litter, anti freeze?? WHERE DID THAT COME FROM. Plus there is a flashlight, spare belt, heavy coat, jack and spare tire and the trusty cell phone. Now we all know that the best of the winter cars is the CORVAIR. The only thing that will stop one is drifting snow. Here are some of things I check and do for winter/snow driving: ENGINE TUNE: Needless to say, you must be able to start your CORVAIR before you can drive it this winter. Battery and cables, spark plugs, lighter viscosity oil (clean too) will allow this to happen. As with a lot of the text below, the adage of "take care of your car and your car will take care of you" is prominent here. Also wipers and washers shouldn't even have to be mentioned here. LIGHTS: I like the halogen lights, they are brighter and whiter. When driving on wet blacktop the old lights get absorbed by the black, the new stay nice and white. I like a pair of running lights mounted low under the bumper. The low mount doesn't reflect the light during hard snow and fog conditions. The 50 watt is good but the 100 watt is better. I also check the tail and brake lights and also the dash lights and interior lights. I use an extra map light on the dash too if I need to look inside the car at night. TIRES: The all season radial will work in about any condition except very slick roads. The only real alternative is 4 studded tires. If a CORVAIR has 4 studded tires it is like driving on dry pavement, it will stop and turn perfectly. Trouble is that around Denver the roads don't get that bad that often and it is hard to justify buying the tires unless you do a lot of mountain driving or just like the secure feeling of the studs. THE REST OF THE SUSPENSION: Obviously the suspension parts such as shocks, ball joints and steering components must be in good condition the year round. It is more so in the slickened road conditions. The brakes must be able to stop exactly in a straight line or the car will slide. If a shock is bad then the car will settle on the suspension when hitting a dip in the road or a chuck hole. Again, the car will tend to get away quickly. There is nothing worse that chasing the steering wheel while trying to make minute corrections during a drive down a road that is like a mirror because of the ice. (see below about driving style too) HEATER: Yep, the CORVAIR heater is NOT the best in the world but it can be more than adequate if good heater hoses are in place, a high output heater motor is used and all sheet metal and thermostat parts are in place. Use the insulation kit offered by the vendors to seal the sheet metal and the defroster won't steam the windshield either. Also check your fuse, I find that fuses left alone in the holder will develop corrosion after several years and either cut down the voltage or fail completely due to age. I open the vent windows a bit, it helps to pull the defroster warm air out towards the sides of the windshield and even warms the side glass a bit. Also it is nice to have something opened in case a siren suddenly sounds off. Naturally the engine has to be reckoned with here too, if there are any oil leaks or exhaust leaks the heater will certainly be miserable. I watch for little details too, things like the oil filler cap not sealing good is a good example. Also the vent tube not into the air cleaner properly will make a nasty smell inside the car. =CNM= Corvair Catastrophies Ruth Boydston The most embarrassing moment of my married life was something that happened to me because I was driving a Corvair with an automatic shift. We got our first Corvair in 1964. Believe it or not, I didn't drive it much. But I did drive lots of others as the years went by. In 1988 Francis got a really nice four door automatic for me. No more shifting for me! On my first drive, I took it to quilting class. I guess Francis had started it for me and warmed it up. When I got in it to come home, I couldn't get it to start. I called my stand by. He came right out. He very calmly asked, "Did you put it in neutral?" I bet I was real red in the face. At the Tri-State in Ouray, Colorado in 1988, at our banquet, I was called up by Steve Goodman and presented with an owner's manual along with this story in front of everyone. If it hadn't been in good fun, I would have killed him. =CNM= Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2003 19:33:52 -0500 From: Dennis & Debbie Pleau ( dpleau AT earthlink DOT net ) Subject: Tri-State Hotel Reservation Number Rita left a message today that some of the Hotel reservation information was missing from the CNM newsletter. The cost is $50.00 per night tax included and only 13 non-smoking rooms are available. Six of our members toured the hotel in eight different rooms and could smell no smoke so I think they do a wonderful job of cleaning without spraying that awful perfume substance. We are excited about the chance to make this the largest turnout ever for TriState and are working on a lot of family and driver events and fun. If you would be so kind to forward this message to the President of the Albuquerque club , I would appreciate it.
