All officers except the Treasurer were present. There were 23 members in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. The Treasurer phoned his report to the Secretary. CNM had $405.34 in the regular checking account and $1,898.84 in the GMAC account for a total of $2,304.18. Dave Huntoon said that a Mr. Ferguson who lives in the North Valley contacted him. He has a 1966 Corvair with 140 and 4-speed and 56,000 miles. Pictures were shown. Mr. Ferguson would like to get rid of this car. See Dave for contact information. Dave also announced that since he is now President, he needs someone to volunteer to be membership chairperson. Please let's help out on this. Dave has done a good job of taking over for Sylvan. There was no report from the Sunshine Committee. Geoffrey Johnson filled in for Robert Gold with a report on the Car Council meeting. The past swap meet was deemed a success. The Car Council is looking for a club to take over organizing the annual picnic in August. There was some discussion about CNM taking this on as a project. Anyone that might be interested in taking this on, contact the board or Robert Gold. See our web site for more complete information. Also see our club web site for the criteria on the two club annual awards. The Saturday after this meeting will be our annual Auction and Potluck at House of Covers at 18:00. All proceeds from the auction go to the club. There are always some great buys and a lot of fun. The following weekend is the GWFBTASM at Palm Springs. It was announced that the same weekend there would be a SCTA meeting at Muroc dry lake. A phone number was given for those that needed more details. This was to be with special permission of the Air Force. The November breakfast was announced as being on the 20th at 08:30 at Hello Deli. The December breakfast will be on the 18th at Cracker Barrel. More details will follow. The Christmas brunch is all set for December 5th, a Sunday, at 12:00 at the Officers Club on Kirtland Air Force Base. The cost will be $15.28 for adults and $7.65 for children. This includes gratuities, etc. To get in you must go to the Wyoming gate and sign in. You must have identification, preferably with a picture and be a CNM member. To take your car on the base you must show a valid drivers license, registration for the car and proof of current insurance. Ray Trujillo has his 1962 Corvair, which used to belong to Ron and Debbie Deck, at his shop at 4316 Silver SE, which is near Central and Washington. The Corvair is partially disassembled. It was decided that we could have an occasional session to help him figure out what needs to be done and how to do it. Saturdays after our monthly breakfast seemed like a good time, so it was decided that after our breakfast on the 20th of November, everyone who would like to, can meet at Ray's shop at 10:30. The first meeting will be mostly an assessment session. There was further discussion on whether CNM wanted to host the Car Council picnic in August 2005. The question was would the Car Council cover expenses. There were several possible sites mentioned. The cut-off time for ordering and PAYING for the new shirts was set for the Auction and potluck. Steve will order them the following Monday. The meeting was adjourned at 20:18. Dave Huntoon showing some tapes of the Autocross at Lexington followed this. =CNM= WALL STREET JOURNAL ARTICLE by Chuck Vertrees The September 17th Wall Street Journal ran an article called "The New Investment Vehicle". It says that in the booming classic-auto market, collectors are driving up prices for '60s muscle cars, VW vans, and even early SUVs. The trend seems to be "I look for cars that I wanted but couldn't buy when I was 20." In some degree, new interest in old cars is a reaction to the past few years' lackluster stock performance. But it's a product of weary baby boomers seeking out cars they could only dream of owning a few decades ago. The author of the Wall Street Journal article sorted through hundreds of models collectors are interested in and put together their own list of 50 investment-grade cars from Model A's to '80s Ferraris. The list represents a swath of the colloctor market, focusing on cars available in large-enough quantities that buyers stand a chance of finding one. The list is divided into three sections, Buy, Hold, and Sell. Of interest to CNM members is the fact that under "Buy" they include one of ours. They recommend a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Coupe. The typical price is listed as $4,575 with a High Price of $5,225. Over the last 5 years the price is supposed to gone up 43% and over the last 10 years up 100%. The cars on their list are very interesting. I will bring the article to the next meeting in case someone is interested in reading it. =CNM= REPORT OF THE CAR COUNCIL MEETING OF OCTOBER 27, 2004 Robert Gold I'M NOT MUCH of a person for the stars and astrology. The alignment of this and that just confuses me so I don't pay much attention to it. However... there must have been something going on with the meeting of the council I just attended. I know that sometimes coincidences are just coincidences and nothing more... but consider what went on October 27. For those of you who have known me for a while or have seen my tattoos, you would know that I'm quite a baseball fan. My favorite team is the Cardinals and after 17 years the Cards were finally in the World Series. You may also know that another thing that I like are CORVAIRS -- lots of Corvairs -- the more the merrier. Another thing I really, really like is New Mexico. Being raised in Missouri I am amazed by how much I took to living here. It is now 23 years and counting. If you look at the old-style New Mexico license plates that only 1/3 of the drivers like (I'm in that 1/3) you see the State motto -- Land of Enchantment. That enchantment can come in many forms. For example, I look at all that dust flying around in the spring as enchantment. I also call the spiritual nature of being here as enchantment -- just look at the Sandias glowing at sunset and you'll know what I mean. I also see the glow of a full moon above the City as enchantment. I'll always remember waking up early one morning right after I moved here and thinking that I had left a light on outside. I went to turn it off when I noticed the glow was not a light -- it was the moon. It shone so bright it was casting shadows. You could read a newspaper in that glow. Now that is enchantment. Anyway, on the night of October 27, 2004 three things I value came crashing together... baseball, cars, and enchantment. You see my Cardinals were in the process of losing the World Series that night to those guys with the Red Sox, that was while I was attending the Car Council meeting and representing CNM, and would you believe it, all on a night of a lunar eclipse! The thought still fills up my small brain with all kinds of images. I just wish I could make some deep philosophic statement based on these events, but all I can say is that there is no better place to be than here -- oh yes, did I mention that on the way home I passed a Rampside -- What's going on here!!? So, I bet you're wondering when will I start reporting on the Council meeting. I guess this is as good a time as any. You might be interested to know that CNM was represented by two members on the 27th. Geoff Johnson was nice enough to attend with me. It was nice to have someone to joke with during the proceedings. You see, like me, Geoff finds the meetings to be highly entertaining. I always thought that Corvair people were a bit odd, but if you get a group of car nuts who like a bunch of different kinds of cars together you have one of the odder assortment of people you can assemble in one place. You never know what they'll say next. The meeting began with a description of the swap meet. All in all it was a success. People came from all over to sell stuff and lots of folks showed up to buy stuff. It looks like the organizers are starting to get things right. We have a five-year contract for the event in Los Lunas, so by the end of that time things should be about perfect. My hope is that by that time I won't have so many conflicts, like soccer, so I can actually attend the meet. I would recommend that the CNM'ers put the swap meet on your calendars for next year. Just ask our President, David Huntoon, and he'll tell you how much fun it was. Now comes the part where I can describe one of those car nuts who make attending the council meetings so much fun... There was a description of the upcoming Veterans' car show in T or C. The individual who was publicizing the event got up to speak... and by the time he finished (I'm not sure he's stopped talking yet) we knew far more about the event and all sorts of other things than we cared to know. It seems to me that if you get up and as Joe Friday used to say "Give us the facts and only the facts, ma'am" you should have accomplished the job of publicizing the event. However, after hearing about the personality struggles that resulted from the show (it sounded like the women at the hospital in charge of the event was going to be beheaded as soon as the show was completed), the rowdies that terrorized the show (it was a bunch of motorcyclists that wouldn't get off their bikes), and the holdup that occurred after the money came in (out of several thousands of dollars that were raised only a couple made it to the veterans) I had about enough. I have to say however, that I really liked that guy's shirt. The pattern on it glowed like it was from Los Alamos. I also have to say that nowhere in his talk did that individual say anything nasty about Corvairs... chalk one up for our side. I next need to alert members of our club that according to Geoff Johnson an event of epic proportions is about to occur. A flyer was handed out at the meeting that described an auction that is to be held on Saturday, December 4 at 9:00 am at Broadway Truck Salvage, 3405 Broadway SE to dispose of a collection of cars and trucks that have taken Mr. Mistee Thomson years to accumulate. His collection is one of those kinds of collections that you almost run off the road when you pass by because you're so busy looking at it. I have that problem every time I go from Roswell to Artesia -- there is a junk yard that looks like a Hollywood designer assembled it. And what really fascinates me about the Roswell yard is that it is never open for business. Must be for aliens who need a place to hang out. Well the group of cars at auction on the 4th is supposed to be like that. I know I'll be there, but I know if I buy anything I better be prepared to sleep in it for a very long time -- isn't that right dear? I was saving the best thing for last... actually adjourning the meeting was the best thing, but what I'm about to describe comes a close second. You see I was making a beeline for the door with Geoff after the meeting adjourned, but alas I didn't make it. Joyce Clements called me aside and asked to talk to me. Sensing that this could take some time I told Geoff to save himself and make for home. Now is the time I need to wax philosophic. I've written quite a lot of articles for CNM, but I have never really gotten it through my mind that actually anyone really reads the mountain of words I write. That is probably why I get so carried away with what I say. I want to let everyone whom I may have offended know that I don't really set out to irritate anyone, it just sort of happens. With that aside, I'm now ready to continue with my story. So, Joyce asks me to stay awhile so she can talk to me. It seems that she reads the CNM newsletter, which I would say is good. She really likes the newsletter, which I would say is good. She thinks editor Jim Pittman should be complimented, which I would say is very, very, good. But she also reads my articles on the Car Council -- whooops. Right then I realized that I was having the same feeling as the night my Father caught me using magic marker on the neighbors' cars. There was no hiding what was done and I was going to have to take it like a man. Since my name is at the end of the articles I had to admit I wrote them. Joyce said that she took some offense at my description of the last council dinner as being elitist. That really caught me of guard since I didn't remember saying that exactly. Actually I can't remember most of what I write. So I had to allow that I must have said that. The question in my mind was the point I was trying to make by my comment. After hemming an hawing for a couple of minutes I realized the problem. I thought it was unfair that an event so open, like the car council picnic, had been made so closed, like the by-invite-only buffet dinner. I missed the picnic. I wanted a chance for my two children to jump into the tire-framed pits at the Elk's Park. That is what I wound up saying to Joyce. What surprised me was that she agreed with what I said, but I wasn't quite prepared for what she said next. Did I ever tell you how I wound up organizing the State Fair Car Show. It seems that for several years my family and I enjoyed displaying our Corvairs at the Fair under the sponsorship of the VMCCA. Then one year someone said something bad to someone else and their sponsorship ended. Without that sponsorship we couldn't display our cars. So I groused about it for about two years and at a CNM meeting I said how much I missed the car show... I think you're probably getting the point now... so someone suggested I see about getting back in the Fair... and here I am now completing my 7th car show. Well... the same thing happened, except now I was representing CNM and not just myself. Joyce suggested that the club might want to take the lead in reviving the picnic. How 'bout it fellow CNM'ers? Don't you want my children to have a tire to dive into? Don't you want to be the club most represented at a Car Council event? Don't you want glory for Corvairs!!!??? If you believe in America and apple pie and family values why don't we take the lead and keep the picnic going? Anyway, think about it and we can discuss it at the next meeting. I guess that's about it for this month. You know what's nice? The Car Council doesn't meet again until January, so you won't have to read another of my articles again until next year. Until we meet again. --- Robert Gold =CNM= SUNSHINE COMMITTEE Heula Pittman The Sunshine Committee and Corvairs of New Mexico wish a big Happy Birthday to two members this December: Ruth Boydston and Sally Johnson We have three couples celebrating their Wedding Anniversaries this month: Sylvia & Jerry Goffe Mark & Elizabeth Domzalski Joel & Lori Nash Congratulations to all! (Failures and foolhardy repair stories about our favorite car the CORVAIR) by Steve Goodman Rocky Mountain CORSA - Denvair News - November 2004 I have always been amazed about the strength and reliability of the CORVAIR engine. Years ago a lady customer took her 1965 Monza to a parking lot at Stapleton Airport for a friend to drive when arriving in Denver. Several hours after the plane touched down I got a call from the lady owner. She said the car was dead and not too far from my shop. I drove up the street a little ways and the car was sitting on the side of the road. The friend/driver said it just stopped running but was smoking heavily before that. I lifted the lid and saw NO BELT and the engine was still smoking and too hot to touch. I asked her how long the belt had been off and she had no idea. She said a red light came on the dash when she was leaving the airport. She had driven about 30 miles in the summer heat from the airport to where the car finally gave up and quit. I tried the starter and the engine was locked up. Later that day I had the car towed to the shop and the next morning I decided to look at it again. I turned the key and the engine fired up easily, of course kinda noisy for a couple of minutes. I put a new belt on it, changed oil and filter and the owner picked up the car and continued to drive it for years. The most ingenious belt replacement: a snow chain tensioner. TECH TIP by Steve Goodman Rocky Mountain CORSA - Denvair News - November 2004 This is an old tip but worth repeating (I hope). For all of us with A/C or smog pumps, the oil filter lays parallel to the ground, thus when loosened the oil runs out at the back of the engine. There are two choices here, either loosen the top bolt and drop the filter and the 45 degree adapter and then worry about sealing up the paper gasket at the bottom of the adapter OR remove the filter itself. Removing the filter requires a very long 3/8" extension and wobbly socket (1/2"). Slip the extension from the distributor side along the engine mount and under the filter adapter. Now to the heart of this tip: wrap the filter in a ziplock bag or other plastic baggie. The baggie will catch the oil and keep the engine clean. I still place a couple of rags under the oil filter JUST IN CASE. =CNM= * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOR SALE, TRADE OR WANTED * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOR SALE: 1967 Monza 4-door sedan, low miles, factory air, 110-HP, automatic. VP Mark ran our meeting; president Dennis was at the GFBT&SW in California. We discussed the existing Meissner and the proposed Boydston awards. New members were Faye & Clint & Bradley Jones and Beryl & George Montoya. Wendell said we had $7,999 in the bank. Bill reported on the doings of the Car Council: a successful swap meet, a great Chimayo Tour by the Packard club, an upcoming tour to Bosque del Apache and planning the 1998 Museum car show. Jim thanked Mark for his regular column and many tech tips during the last two years. "Full'a Hot Air" by president Dennis noted that several CNM families were driving late sedans - they aren't useful only as a source of spare parts for coupes or convertibles after all! The Fan Belt Toss was a great event this year and Clayborne was the only CNM member to take a Corvair. A tech tip by Larry Claypool told us that pre-1966 Corvairs did NOT have holes or brackets for rear seat belts, and he strongly advised against glueing down a carpet. Larry also told us what to do (and what not to do) if your late model glove box was stuck shut. Dennis forwarded a Virtual Vairs article (by the way, why do we never get any Virtual Vairs input any more? Del?) on HO electronic ignition systems and their benefits. We reprinted an article on "Unsafe At Any Speed" by Norm Helmkay. A good overview of the infamous book by a famous presidential candidate in 2000 and in 2004. Last but maybe not least, we had an index of all the useful and interesting contents of our newsletter during 1997. Fourteen Years Ago - December 1990 - Volume 16 - Number 12 The cover showed a Lamborghini Diablo with a Corvair front end: another Mark Morgan invention. President Steve Gongora introduced guests Daniel and August Chavez. We had $905 in cash or credit. We discussed Christmas party plans. Sylvan was officially appointed membership chairman and Wayne Christgau assumed Publication/Properties Manager duties. We needed new license plates. Bill Reider suggested a packet for new members to include tips and local sources of parts. A list of suggested events for 1991 was included. Mike Stickler told us how to use plumber's tape to install late heads on an early engine. Larry Dandridge from another club contributed a list of all you should take along on a trip. Finally, there was the infamous snake story from "Liars' Corner" by Roger Welsch. We finished up with the 1990 index. Twenty-one Years Ago - December 1983 - Volume 9 - Number 12 Our cover featured a Corvair Christmas Tree. LeRoy ran the meeting. Our bank account was up to $445. We planned to get metal, not plastic license plates this time. Del planned our Christmas dinner at Milton's Restaurant. John Hayes of the Car Council showed slides of old cars. George Morin provided an outstanding article on oil and grease seals, with part numbers and tips on installing them. Bill Reider offered tips on checking old pistons before re-use. All of last month's Model-T parts were listed. And there was a 1983 index. Twenty-eight Years Ago - December 1976 - Volume 2 Secretary Steve said there were 29 at our meeting. The board proposed a dues increase from $15 to $17. We re-elected the old slate of officers for the coming year. A council of car clubs was being formed in New Mexico; more on that next month. LeRoy offered to sell a 1961 Lakewood for $175. Ike Meissner's classic article, "Clyde and the 500," told about racing a Pontiac LeMans up the hill to Los Alamos. Several tech tips were borrowed from other publications: how to properly vent your carbs, details of the notorious Corvair swing axle, installing a heavy duty heater fan, a source for black engine paint, and information about early engine fabric seals. =CNM= CNM Auction and Potluck Heula Pittman Except for a silver topless Audi convertible in the corner, by 6:00 PM Saturday November 6th the work area at House of Covers had been cleared of cars, tools and upholstery materials and transformed into a weekend party zone. Steve and Rita Gongora and our Club members did it again! We pulled off another successful auction at House of Covers. The final tally told us we cleared a whopping $504 for our club's treasury this year - even better than last year when we brought in $420. Steve and Rita once again graciously extended themselves, providing their facilities and time and energy to the club. They did such a great job keeping the bids moving along that the large piles of goods soon disappeared. We appreciate all your efforts, guys. We estimate there were 50 or so club members and friends and relatives of club members in attendance. It was apparent that everyone had a good time, leaving with full tummies from all the exceptional food and of course our newly acquired treasures. Thanks to everyone who participated by contributing items to be sold and to those who bought those items, and especially thanks to those who contributed the delicious food. =CNM= CNM Standing Awards Mark Domzalski A few years ago, before I served my third year as your president, I had an idea to modernize and formalize a few things. Late last year I made it a goal, to be completed within one year, to revise and modernize our CNM Constitution and set forth documented guidelines for our two standing awards, the Ike Meissner Award and the Francis Boydston Award. Thankfully, your Board of Directors thought it was a good idea to pursue these goals and allowed me to form two committees to work the details and bring the final documents before the Board for approval and, in the case of the new CNM Constitution, the membership for approval. The new CNM Constitution achieved approval, thanks to Bill Reider, Sylvan Zuercher and Larry Hickerson, the Board and the membership. The CNM Constitution is available for reading on the CNM website and is published in the latest revision of the CNM Care and Feeding booklet. The new CNM Constitution sets forth descriptions of duties and responsibilities of officers, what standing committees exist and defines your membership. For anyone who is interested in becoming involved in the operation of CNM, the new CNM Constitution is a great place to learn how your chapter has chosen to operate. More recently, a committee, comprised of Sally Johnson, Sylvan Zuercher, Wendell Walker and myself, with support from Bill Reider and Geoff Johnson, worked through a history and developed guidelines and nomination forms for both the Ike Meissner and Francis Boydston Awards. Both award criteria were approved by your CNM Board of Directors and are available for review and use on the CNM website. We will evaluate whether or not to include these new documents in the next edition of the Care and Feeding Booklet or publish a separate supplemental booklet for the standing awards criteria. In both of the criteria, there is information that will allow for robust and meaningful presentations when future recipients are presented with these awards. To understand the meaning of these two awards is a significant component in why CNM is one of the most successful CORSA chapters and why our chapter enjoys the great people dynamics that are sometimes hard to find in other organizations. Thanks to the dedication and thoughtfulness of the committee folks and your CNM Board of Directors, we have a CNM Constitution and standing award criteria that will hopefully withstand at least another thirty years of use and success. =CNM= President's letter David Huntoon Just a few quick notes and a reminder. The CNM Christmas party is fast approaching and I would encourage all to attend. Good food and a pleasant social event is a fine way to close out another good year for our club. To all those who have not attended in the past, give it a thought. The CNM auction was a success. Just over $500 was collected and some fine items were claimed to populate our homes. It is like these items just needed a new home and now they have them. Several tables loaded with good food also. It is not lost on me how many of our events revolve around food and fellowship. Many thanks to Steve and Rita for a fine event. The next day, Del and I went to a car show I mentioned at the last meeting. Del with the purple beast and I with the my VW. Mostly high dollar stuff - 442's, 55-57 Chevys, early pickups and some Ford street rods. All nice machines. I felt a little out of place, but we both got trophies. Geoff dropped by and we commandeered his car to go find that 66 Corsa that Harold Ferguson was anxious to move. When we got to the spot, we found Larry and Joel starting to winch it up on a trailer. They had already put some air in the tires and hooked it up to pull it onto the trailer. Not a bad car at all, stock 140 with a 4 speed and white interior. Trunk and floorboards looked good. The best part was the telescoping steering column and wood wheel. It was worth the effort just for that. So among the five of us, we struggled mightily, in the finest Corvair tradition, to load on then unload it at its new home. On a more personal note, I had to cancel the planned trip to Palm Springs with Del. My doctor had other plans for my time. I guess when you visit your doc, they WILL find something in need of attention. Especially when you are not 20 anymore. Intellectually I still feel like a goofy 20, but physically you can triple that number. Bummer. Back in Illinois, my father and brother have added another to the herd. This one is a '36 Ford 4 door sedan in Washington blue. An exact duplicate of one my Dad had in the '40s. Surprisingly, this is a car we had some 30 years ago. It ended up in the hands of some relatives in a dry garage for the last 30 years. Excellent unrestored, unmolested in any way. A time capsule car. Needs an interior, but it is 68 years old. It runs and drives so we can move it around easily. The plan is to upgrade to hydraulic brakes and maybe another flathead V8 to transplant. Anybody have a good running flathead for sale? See you at the next meeting! - Dave =CNM= BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 17:16 at House of Covers on 11/17/04. Present were Steve Gongora, Wendell Walker, Robert, Ann Mae, Javier and Sara Gold, Dave Huntoon, Sally Johnson, and Chuck and Julia Vertrees. Wendell reported that the CNM treasury had $1,401.41 in the checking account, $1,898.81 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,300.22. The checking account balance includes the money paid for shirts and the $504 or $506 CNM made on the potluck auction. This is about $100 more than last year. There were some late model body parts left over that we need to decide what to do with. Sally said that the GWFBT&SW went well they saw Joel Nash and the Pleaus there. We received a letter from Clarks offering to prepare a list of their customers residing in selected Zip-Code regions. They will let us know how many there in the areas we select, and will send a letter that we prepare to them. This seems to be a good way to possibly get some new members. The secretary was directed to take care of this. Bill Reider suggested to Wendell that we might consider raising the dues about $5.00 per month. They have been $15.00/year for a long long time. This was discussed without a decision. The Christmas party is all set for December 5th at 12:00. It will be at the Kirtland Air Force Base Officers Club. You must enter through the Wyoming gate. To take your car on base you must be on the CNM membership list and present the registration to the car, proof of current insurance and a valid drivers license. Also anyone with you in the car must have a photo I.D. The new shirts were ordered today. Those that had not paid did not have a shirt ordered. The November breakfast is scheduled for 08:30 at Hello-Deli's, followed by a 10:30 meeting at Ray Trujillo's shop at 4316 Silver SE. Bill Reider sent an e-mail list to Dave on the things he thought needed to be accomplished first. The December breakfast will be at the Cracker Barrel at 08:30 on the Saturday after the December board meeting. The Cracker Barrel is at San Antonio and I-25. Our sponsor at Galles, Joe Trujillo has left Galles. Steve will check with them as to what this might mean. There is new management and they may want to make a lot of changes. Sally said that Ray Trujillo's shop is available. It must be remembered that Galles has been giving us $100 per quarter to help defray the cost of our newsletter. Whether this will continue is unknown. The advantage of going to another meeting place like Ray's shop is that there would not be stairs to climb. This has made it very difficult for some CNM members at Galles. We had two representatives at the Car Council meeting, our regular delegate plus Geoffrey Johnson as a backup. Robert reported that the Car Council felt the swap meet went well. There were some problems. The extended time was not a success and they will probably go back to the regular days. They have a 4-year contract with Los Lunas. Robert was again approached about CNM possibly taking over finding a venue and running the August picnic. Robert was asked to find out if they would cover any costs, See our web site for a more in depth Car Council report. Robert was also asked about the possibility of putting on a car show at the Sonic at Candelaria and Juan Tabo. It may possibly follow a breakfast in April. Sally said that the 2006 Tri-State will be ours and it is time to start doing some planning. Suggested as venues were Taos, Red River, and Lake City It is also time to set up a calendar of events for 2006. The board will take this up at the next meeting.
