Called to order at 7:45pm. We had 22 members present and 2 guests. The guests were Mark's father and one of Wendell's sons. The treasury report was $3315.22. The minutes from the last meeting were approved. There was no Car Council report as they (the Car Council) are in recess for December and January. New business included a potential car show in April at the Sonic Drive-in on Juan Tabo and Menaul. Robert Gold is the lead contact on this prospect. He is considering a joint appearance with another club for this event, possibly the Mustang club to make an interesting juxtaposition. Nothing is set yet, but we will see. It was suggested we start thinking about a site for our turn at the Tri-State. Any ideas? That is about it, my notes were sketchy at this point. I will be more careful next time especially when Chuck isn't present, live and learn. We adjourned at 8:30 or thereabouts. Acting in Chuck's absence.............. Dave =CNM= DECEMBER BOARD MEETING Charles Vertrees The meeting was called to order on 12/15/04 at House of Covers at 17:18. Present were Robert Gold, Jim Pittman, Steve Gongora, Dave Huntoon and Chuck Vertrees. The minutes of the last board meeting were approved. There was no treasurer's report as none of us had contacted our treasurer. The new shirts had arrived and Steve gave them out to those who had ordered and paid for them. The Christmas dinner was discussed. There were 53 adults and two children present. (A lot of what we used to consider children are now young adults. For those of us who don't see them all the time, is good to see what nice young adults they have become. It must be that they are children of Corvair owners.) It was also mentioned how much easier it was to get on the Air Base this time. Robert has e-mailed John Duran of the Mustang club about the possibility of having a joint show in April at a Sonic. We could possibly have a breakfast first. I was asked to ask Clark's about some of their promotional tapes. (I have mailed them a request.) The regular meeting the first of the month was discussed. Those of us who arrived early found that Galles was having a meeting in the room where we were supposed to be. I was led to believe that the meeting would go on for another hour or more. It was too cold to have it outside, as we had done once in the past, so some others and I went back home. As it turned out the meeting was over shortly and those who had not left were able to have a meeting. There were about 20 members present. I later found out that the Galles meeting was somewhat of an emergency and they were still planning on our using the room. Everything is still OK with Galles for our regular meetings. The board will create an activities calendar at the January meeting. All members are asked to contact an officer at any time with possible ideas for activities, and also let us know what past activities you enjoyed. Use e-mail or notes at the next meeting. We will even accept them in crayon on paper bags as long as the jelly is not sticking. Your secretary will miss the next meeting, since I am taking my wife to Hawaii on a cruise. The meeting was adjourned at 17:59. -- Chuck =CNM= NEWSLETTER FOR JANUARY David Huntoon THE FIRST THING I would like to mention is my absence at the Xmas party especially since I suggested in the last newsletter that all should attend. While warming up the truck preparing to leave for the party, I decided to retrieve my paperwork, registration and proof of insurance, to get on base. Imagine my surprise when I saw my registration had expired on both my vehicles. Further investigation showed I had sent in my renewals 3 weeks earlier, on time. I guess the state MVD took a few extra days off around the Thanksgiving holiday. I did get the renewals the week after the Xmas party, but that was just slightly too late for me. Things happen. Then again my presence is not necessary for a successful event. Some may even say my absence was hardly noted. Maybe next time. With the year winding down, I hope all my friends in the club can put 2004 in the plus column. I had a few rough spots that I do not wish to repeat, but all in all........ ok. My wish for all is that 2004 was better than ok and that 2005 is even better. At the next meeting we will be filling in the calendar for 2005. If anyone has a new thought for an event or outing, let's hear it. One of my thoughts is an Isotopes ball game. Spring or summer, maybe several times during the season. If you have not been to the renovated Isotopes ball park, I think you would enjoy it. It is just plain beautiful. Nice seats, manicured field, food, concessions, souvenirs. No place better to be on a summer night. Well maybe working on or driving your Corvair would be better, but a ball game is nice also. Wouldn't require much planning, just show up and meet someplace in the ball park and pick out some seats (general admission). Definitely family friendly. Grab some hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks and enjoy the game. Any thoughts? I think I can hear Robert packing the car now. Take care everyone and see you at the next meeting. - Dave =CNM= DECEMBER CNM BREAKFAST Jim Pittman Saturday morning, December 18. It was a pretty cold winter morning when we left home, but the sun was out, making for a bright and cheerful drive up to San Antonio and then west toward the I-25 freeway. We met at the Cracker Barrel - and a very crowded place it was at 8:40 or so. Some of us were early and some were late, but not too late. The group was small, the food was judged by some to be mediocre, but there was nothing wrong with the company. Kim, Del, Sally, Heula, Jim, Hurley and Dave had a pleasant CNM breakfast and a few Corvair tall tales were exchanged. It was a good way to start a weekend. Sunshine Committee, 275-2195, Heula Pittman =CNM= 2004 CHRISTMAS PARTY REPORT Heula Pittman THIRTY-FIVE ADULTS and two children were present at our annual Christmas party this year. Rita and Steve Gongora took over the organization and planning in the absence of Steve's dad. And as usual, they did a super job. Thanks to both of you guys for everything you did to make this a memorable Corvair function. We sincerely missed Hector Gongora who usually sets up everything for us at Kirtland AFB. He had surgery a few days before the event and Rita reported that he was doing well. The Sunshine Committee provided food for a couple of days for them after they got home from the hospital. The serve-yourself buffet offered a variety of different traditional, festive foods for us to indulge in. In fact, there was so much to choose from, it was impossible to taste everything. It was all delicious. It was great to have some special guests with us this year. The ones I know of are Rachel Goffe Solis and her family. Rachel is the daughter of Jerry and Sylvia Goffe. Also in attendance was Mark Domzalski's dad. We missed seeing several of our regular members and hope that they were not absent because of illness. Santa's elves did it again! They prepared beautiful Santa gift bags for all the "children" and officers. Their gingerbread cookies are always a hit with everyone. Thanks, Guys, for all your work and preparations for putting so many smiles on so many faces. From the looks of the huge pile of toys and games on the table in the back of the room, there was a good selection of things to deliver to the children of the Bernalillo County jail parents. We really appreciate all that Emma Rogers and Lee Reider did to make this such a success. Maybe we should think about making this an annual event. Richard and Gayle Finch allowed anyone who was interested to take a tour of their Corvair powered Ultravan. I must say that it is really "fixed up" with everything including a stove, a refrigerator, a potty (my favorite), and a queen-size bed! I'm sure Gayle and Richard enjoy driving it around the country, getting all the "double takes" and answering all the questions about their Ultravan. Many of us enjoyed the fascinating tour. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year's Christmas gathering one to remember! =CNM= HECTOR GONGORA UPDATE Steve Gongora Hector Gongora was in surgery Wednesday December 1st to remove a football sized cancer mass. The good news is that the mass did not attach itself to any other organ except the stomach. They removed a small portion of the stomach and he was released from the hospital this last Monday evening. They put him on a chemo-therapy pill called Gleevec. It will kill specific cancer cells. He is recovering. As of Christmas Day he was feeling very well despite having lost a lot of weight. -- Steve =CNM= NEWS FROM VANCOUVER, WA Mark & Mary Lou Martinek (Jim sent Christmas Party photos to Mary Lou and Mark Martinek and asked about the weather and volcano activity. We hope you had a great Thanksgiving. We flew to Fredericksburg, VA for Thanksgiving with our youngest son & 6 grand kids. Thanks for the photos. We enjoyed them. Have avoided the ash & mud slides but not the rain. We went up to the Mt St Helens' visitor center one time but it was too cloudy to see the volcano activity. The lava dome is still growing but no major discharge of steam, lava or gases. No major mud slides yet. The 500 ft thick glazier has been melted thru in some areas (the lava dome and surrounding area) but it is still there & healthy. Have had no luck joining the local Corvair club. Have e-mailed them twice for meeting information with no response. They must all have gone on Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas vacation. Will try again after the new year. You all take care. Hello to everyone & a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year in case I get lazy and forget to write. Am still trying to unpack and re configure this house to our liking. Have been trimming bushes back for weeks. Got the Corvair & Geo in the garage so as not to be inundated with the liquid sunshine. Had let the Geo outside covered with a tarp when we went to VA. It was moldy inside when we returned; it is a fair weather car! Mark & Mary Lou Martinek (360) 896-3807 =CNM= YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS........ by Steve Goodman Rocky Mountain CORSA - December 2004 Failures and foolhardy repair stories about our favorite car; the CORVAIR I have saved this story for the last issue of the year. All the stories I have written about this year are the absolute truth and they happened to me at my shop or other places where I worked as a mechanic. A fellow walked into the shop and asked how much for a tune up. The year was about 1976 or so, just after the State of Colorado had instituted a new consumer law about giving written estimates for work required. He stated that the car was a 1960 and that he had bought it new here in Denver. Presuming of course that he was meaning a CORVAIR for the tune up, I wrote the estimate and handed him his copy. He looked it over and exclaimed "I have a 4 cylinder!" I replied, "Sorry, I thought you owned a CORVAIR instead of a VW." And he said, "Yes it is a CORVAIR, but it is the economy model." He also ranted for a couple of minutes about how every mechanic tried to 'take him' by putting 6 spark plugs in that engine and it only needed 4. Now all of us have heard the stories about 4 cylinder Corvairs and I certainly didn't want to make him mad and just call him stupid so I said, "Will you bring it by so I can see it?" He said he would return in a little while and he did... driving a 1960 Corvair. He raised the lid and counted 1-2-3-4 as he pointed to the four plug wires on the corners of the engine and gave me a smug look. After recovering from this for a minute I pointed at the center plugs, hidden slightly of course by the carbs and air cleaner hose on each side and asked "What about these?" He studied where I was pointing and would look at me and then at the engine and then back at me. I didn't want to hurt his feelings and carefully weighed my next comment: "See the distributor cap? There are 6 plug wires." He looked at the cap and then the engine and then to me and back at the cap again. I didn't know what else to say without blurting out, "YOU DUMMY!" so I kept quiet. Finally he just closed the lid and drove away and I never saw him again. I am guessing that the two center plugs in that engine had never been changed from 1960 to 1976. =CNM= TRI-STATE 2005 IN OURAY by Steve Goodman Rocky Mountain CORSA - December 2004 As the year draws to a close, remember that on May 20-22, 2005 the TRI-STATE CORVAIR MEET will be in Ouray, Colorado. As we get into the 2005 year, RMC members will be called upon for some door prizes and possibly other volunteer work details. ALSO start thinking of ideas for a t-shirt, there will be a contest for the artwork for the 2005 meet. The TRI-STATE has no real way of generating income for our club. There are no registration fees nor entry fees. Therefore it is on the club to fund trophies and whatever else might be needed. T-shirts are nice but an expense that sometimes is difficult to break even with. Ruth runs a raffle each year for a table cloth or an afghan that she has made and she donates the entire proceeds to the club. There is always another raffle drawing; anything from a portable TV to a handmade clock using a CORVAIR wheel cover has been done through the years. If someone has an idea for that raffle, tell us at the meeting or call me. Ouray is in the southwestern part of Colorado, north of Durango. Billiken praised early models' gas heaters. President Dennis ran our December meeting. Mark, Clayborne and Dennis reported on a great Fan Belt Toss. Tarmo was working on next year's Tri-State in Lake City, Colorado. We were getting a club "banner" for display at events. We planned to install a flagpole at the Boydston cabin as soon as the weather allowed. Our bank accounts totalled $7,561 and at the board meeting we discussed investment strategies; we also discussed the Meissner and Boydston awards and decided to present the Boydston Award at our Tri-State events each year. There was some discussion about expanding the Tri-State to include Arizona and/or Utah. Rita said the Christmas dinner at the Four Hills Cafe was a great success. Jim and Heula reported on their Thanksgiving trip to Baton Rouge and the exciting drive from Encino to Clines Corners in a blizzard. An interesting article from Seth Emerson discussed the long-term effects of Nader's "UNSAFE" book on the automobile industry and the "sue 'em" mentality pervasive today. The issue had two recipes, two letters about Francis' death and the annual member list; there were 58 member addresses. Fourteen Years Ago - January 1991 - Volume 17 - Number 1 A Spyder convertible on the cover started off our new year. At our December meeting President Steve encouraged us to keep our Corvairs shined up and running and asked for volunteers for the year's activities. Wendell reported $807 in the bank. Will Davis said the Christmas dinner speaker would be Harry S Truman. Bill Reider reported that we were ready to get new CNM front license plates and we ordered fifty. Show-and-tell items included a CR bellhousing seal missing its rubber sealer; a leak around the stud that holds the motor mount plate; and a set of nylon strut rod bushings. This led to a discussion on the pros and cons of using nylon bushings. Articles included a report by Rita on our Christmas dinner. Your editor wrote about the history and meaning of the Ike Meissner Award. There were several tech tips: Replacing window glass; Fuel tank rust; Baking paint onto bolts; Bleeding master brake cylinders; Ground straps on engine sheet metal; Weatherstrip removal; Steering wheel play. The issue ended with our membership roster; we had sixty-two members. Twenty-one Years Ago - January 1984 - Volume 10 - Number 1 Our cover showed the new Pontiac Fiero, a 2-seat mid-engine sporty car. President LeRoy led the meeting. Our treasury held $341. Our speaker was Brent Dalton of the Goodrich Tire Company. Sylvan reported on the Christmas dinner. Your editor provided a two-part article asking whether the Fiero was a worthy successor to the Corvair; this month he said the answer was an emphatic Yes! Bill Reider wrote a technical article on tires and speedometer error. George Morin told how to fix the Powerglide governor plastic gear. And a short tech tip discussed wheel maintenance. Twenty-eight Years Ago - January 1977 - Volume 3 Our meeting notes told of a CB raffle which boosted our treasury to $356. We had a list of suggested outings for the coming year. Editor Glen Thompson penned an interesting article on a drive to Oklahoma City during which he had to stop and overhaul his FC's engine! He installed a new jug and piston -- buttoned up the engine -- hit the starter -- it wouldn't turn over! It was the wrong piston! The lesson was, don't button up an engine without first turning over the crank a full 360 degrees at least once. Did Glen get the right piston? But we made it... and no breakdowns as is fairly frequent in his cars at least from what we could tell after the last time Dave and I followed the Johnsons to the land of oranges. We did have an oil pressure pipe break and spew a little oil but that was an easy fix and it mostly waited till we got there. We still have little or no heat though Dave!! I think we kept it under 90 most the time but I tried to sleep when I wasn't driving so I wouldn't tax my heart too much... no sense making Kim a rich widow before her time!! Nevertheless we did get there awfully quick!! Seems like we left at 4pm and got to town about 2:30am... could that be right?? Well, we got there anyway. I didn't get my breakfast at Waffle House in Phoenix though!! Since we got there so early, I crashed in the parking lot at the local casino till daybreak... then I headed over to the park... in plenty of time to help with the setup!! Finally the Abney's got there and I helped them set up Tim's DJ stuff... Tim is an old DJ... really old... but his wife Diane is nice! Remember the movie Good Morning Vietnam?? Well, Tim worked with the hero of that movie played by Robin Williams... Kronhower I think the name was. He'll tell me for sure! Anyway, Tim has kept the Field of Dreams awash in good music for a few years now. Sometimes he even sneaks in a little barbershop (wonder where he gets that stuff?) to the great delight and pleasure of all the attendees! Before long the field was full of piles of parts... and eager fans were grabbing things to cart home with great abandon... I think the Bonneville club is trying to build a car from scratch and every time I looked, Randy Kelly had another arm load of things to put in the car. Saturday is the big day and that's when all the cars come onto the field... there were some beauties this year as always but I think my two favorites were the Lakewood Spyder Wagon and the late 215 engined coupe... there was something there for everyones' taste I think except Sally pointed out there was only one early sedan. No loss!! So you see, it is a field of dreams and dreams do come true... but not for me... I didn't win the carefully rebuilt 140HP raffle engine!! But I did buy the winning ticket for next year's raffle car... that's right... they are raffling off a 1963 coupe... I think I remember it being a turbo but won't swear to it and my winning ticket doesn't say. It does say though that next year it is going to be held the last weekend of October. There's something important in Corvairdom about that weekend but I was never one for dates. So pack up your shorts and save up your money and join the gang in lovely Palm Springs. Since Inland Empire is hosting next year, that means another great T-shirt!! Oh yeah... you want to know who was there this year?? Well, Geoff and I drove the PC coupe and Sally was there (she and her mom drove in one of those foreign jobs) and so was Joel and Dennis (he drove a F**d) if we still want to call him a CNM member. Was that all...
