It is much more difficult to fly there. -- As the test pilot climbs out of the experimental aircraft, having torn off the wings and tail in the crash landing, the crash truck arrives, the rescuer sees a bloodied pilot and asks "What happened?" Initial eruption shot to 10,000 feet. Later rose to 30-36000 feet. Ash traveling east, NE away from Vancouver. I looked out about 5 and there was an small steam plume as happens most days. During the national news they broke in with the info. I was able to get these photos at 5:37 to 5:42. After that it was too dark for me to get photos. Mark & Mary Lou Martinek (360) 896-3807 =CNM= MARCH MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees THE MEETING was called to order at 19:40 on 3/2/05 at Galles Chevrolet. All officers were present except Vice-President Sally. There were 21 members present and one guest, Bob Moore. Bob has 2 Corvairs, one of which is running. Someone commented that that is about average for the number running among club members. Bob also belongs to the Chrysler 300 club. Did we get a treasurer's report? Maybe not. We'll try to include it with the Board Meeting notes. The Sunshine Committee said that the Anniversary dinner is all set for Saturday 3/26 at Papa Felipe's at 18:00. There will be a choice of 3 or 4 entrees and the cost is $11.97, which includes gratuity. We need some door prizes for the party, so everyone should try to remember to bring some little something with them to the party. Geoffrey Johnson stood in for Robert Gold at the Car Council meeting. He passed out copies of his notes from the meeting. If you didn't get a copy it will be printed in our web site. The next big Car Council event will be the Albuquerque Museum car show in May. There is also a big R.V. show coming up but I did not get the details. CNM will mastermind the August Car Council Picnic. Inscription Rock (El Morro) near Grants is one of the suggestions for a location. The coming Saturday will be our first time this year for the Cleanup on our mile of "Old Route 66". A signup sheet was circulated. April 16th is the date for Bob Agnew's annual "Spring Thaw" and he will take any older cars in his garage and put them up on the rack and have all kinds of simple repairs done. If you want your car on one of the racks, call Bob at 881-2722 for an appointment. It is well worthwhile just to stop by and see an interesting assortment of unusual cars. Ask anyone who has been there. (It is also a good opportunity to peer up at the underside of your car and maybe see a few things you didn't know about that need to be attended to.) THE BOYDSTON AWARD form is in the newsletter. Be sure you look it over and submit anyone's name that you think meets the criteria. Due date is at the April meeting. If you can't be there, mail it to me or another club officer. The breakfast this month is at Twisters although it will be over by the time you receive this newsletter. We need this information at least a month in advance and possibly more. It has been suggested that the Tri-State next year could be in Chama. It will be our turn to be hosts. Think about it. The meeting was adjourned at 20:10 and there was no tech session after the meeting. =CNM= MARCH BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees THE MEETING WAS called to order at 17:13 on 3/16/05 at House of Covers. In attendance were Jim and Heula Pittman, Sally Williams, Wendell Walker, Dave Huntoon, Steve Gongora, and Chuck Vertrees. Wendell reported that we have $630.05 in the checking account, and $1,946.07 in the GMAC account, for a total worth of $2,576.58. This was followed by a short discussion of how our total worth is slowly dropping from year to year. We know what we have been spending and we all agreed that it was worthwhile. We have 38 signed up for the anniversary dinner that is coming up. There are a few who have missed a few meetings and maybe have been out of town. We compared the names on the sign up list with the roster and found six or eight names that possibly would want to come. Dave will contact them as a reminder. The trophy for the Meissner award has been ordered. Everything is in order for the banquet. I have received one reply on the letter that Clarks sent out for us. It is from a Mr. Friendly in Alamogordo, who is basically into racing. He has a Corvair body with a big V-8 in the center. Right now he is has to rebuild it after a tire blew in a high-speed turn. I told him that I would let him know if we had a tour near his area. Steve said that we haven't received a check from Galles for some time. Wendell confirmed that it has been a year. There have been so many changes at Galles that we don't know what has happened. The original deal was through our sponsor Joe Trujillo, and we don't know how it was set up. It was maybe through Galles' advertising budget. Dave will go in and try to check. WE NEED to start thinking about the Boydston Award. It will be presented at the Tri-State meet. We have received one nomination from the Denver club but none from the Pike's Peak club as yet. The nominations need to be in by the end of the first week of April, and we have not received any from CNM. (Actually, the published deadline was at the close of the April meeting.) Spread a little SUNSHINE today!! =CNM= OLD ROUTE 66 CLEANUP Ollie Scheflow THE CLUB held its first Old Route 66 cleanup of 2005 on Saturday, March 5th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The weather was overcast when we arrived at the parking area. While we waited the sun started to break through the clouds, so by the time we set out we had pleasant weather for picking up trash. Unfortunately, the sun eventually retreated and we had a light mist of rain on and off which finally ended in a light drizzle as we were finishing up. We did get damp. We loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal... no, no, I mean, seventeen bags of fast food cups, styrofoam boxes, beer bottles, cardboard and other miscellaneous trash that may have blown in from Arizona or California. Jim found a whole bag load that the Highway Department had missed from our October 2004 clean up! He had to re-bag it as it was scattered. The following Club members participated: Dave Huntoon, Joel Nash, Del Patten, Jim Pittman, Bill Reider and Ollie Scheflow. I would like to encourage all able bodied Members to participate in our cleanups. For new members who may not know, our mile is a mile east of Central and Tramway where NM 333 (Old Route 66) parallels the I-40 freeway. We meet at a roadside parking area near the start of our mile. We pair up in four groups and each group cleans a half mile stretch. We have spiked poles to ease the back bending. It's good exercise and can be surprisingly enjoyable, and it is a benefit both to the State and to the environment. We have been doing this for several years and I'd say it has been a successful Club accomplishment. Thanks to all participants. I hope to see all of you for the July 9th cleanup. It will start at 8:00 AM to avoid the heat of a summer morning. =CNM= SUBJECT: FW: MAILING FROM CLARKS Jim, the first response from our Clark's mailing. Great thinking on how to increase your membership. I live in Alamogordo and rarely get to Abq. It does sound like you have a great club going there. I don't know that I would really "qualify" for your group. Although I do own a "Corvair" and do purchase parts from Clark's, my "Corvair" is pretty much of a silhouette car. I have a late model coupe that I have "slightly modified" over the years. It has a 400 cu in small block Chevy in the back seat running thru a Porsche 930 transaxle. It has '94 Corvette suspension and brakes front and rear as well as steering (with no power assist). It runs Corvette wheels and tires: 17x9.5 with 275/40ZR17 tires front and 17x11 with 315/35ZR17 tires rear. The top has been slightly chopped and it runs a front air dam and a rear spoiler. The interior has been gutted and it has a full cage, aluminum racing seat, five point harness, a 20 gal fuel cell, and fire suppression system. All that is left of the Corvair is the modified body. It is licensed for the street but is used primarily for Open Road Racing and some autocross. It won the overall trophy at the Big Bend (2004) ORR when all of the faster cars broke. It has won in the 170 mph class in the MKM and Silver State events. It has recorded RADAR speeds over 180 mph (189 tops so far) at various events. I was working to record a 200 RADAR speed and sneaking up on it. But, last Sept at the Silver State event in Nevada, disaster struck. A right front tire failure at 165 mph in a left hand curve put me off of the road. The result was a long end-over-end trip thru the desert. Due to my required safety equipment, I walked away with minor injuries. I can send before and after pix if you are interested. As you might imagine, the car was rolled up in a ball. I plan to rebuild it. I have located a '65 body that I'm trying to acquire to start the rebuilding process. So as you can see I'm into the high hp, hi speed stuff. The Corvair body makes a good platform for a mid-engined low buck "supercar" since it is fairly aerodynamic and has a small frontal area. If I can acquire the '65, I will have Corvair running gear and other odds and ends that I would like to sell at reasonable prices, if anyone up there may be interested. -- Charlie Friend =CNM= PRESIDENT'S LETTER David Huntoon AS I AM WRITING this, it is two days before our annual Anniversary Awards dinner. I don't know who the Ike Meissner award recipient is. That is a closely guarded secret available to only a few. A need to know basis only. I would guess four people are in that loop. Thanks to those who voted, those involved in the selection process, and those who are attending the dinner. Now on to the next item, the Boydston Award. Bring your ballots to the next meeting to turn them in. I will bring some extra ballots so you can fill them out then and there. The deadline for these ballots is the April meeting. So think about who might make a good candidate. The first Rt 66 cleanup for the year went well. OK, it rained! We did make a dent in the trash just the same. After the cleanup, Del and I went to retrieve the library van. I had been working on it and had replaced the battery, rebuilt both carbs, topped off the oil, ATF and diff, replaced both u-joints, checked and adjusted brakes, minor tune-up, and other stuff I can't remember right now. You know how it is once you start! Del drove the van and I followed in my pickup. I guess it went well, I lost Del at a stoplight and didn't see him again for 20 minutes or so. Del has basically two speeds, moderate and 2XXL moderate. I kept a watch on the side of the road for a pillar of smoke or a trail of oil, but nothing! After I caught up again, I noticed it was tracking straight, no signs of smoke or anything. Not bad at all. So it is at my place now. I did clean out the library material and would like to find a place to keep the material. Some of it was a little moldy and some had been nibbled on by critters. A nice warm, dry, critter proof, central location would be a good thing. Won't take up much room. Any takers? Did not work on it much in the last 2 weeks as the weather has not cooperated. Did I mention the 30 inches of snow in 2 days! Ten days later some is still on the ground and it is snowing again today. For example, there are four on the floor, quad headlights, dual climate controls, and two or four doors. Specifically for Corvairs we talk about 110 and 140 hp engines. I am sure anybody reading this column can add many things to this list. This thought about numbers came to mind when I attended the last Car Council meeting (yes, I actually DID attend). I was conducting my normal self-guided tour of the Old Car Garage when I came upon a large flathead engine. At first glance it seemed to contain a rather large number of spark plug wires (Clarks calls them cables and that is why I can never find them on their web page, but that's another story). I counted the wires/cables and the number came to 12. On closer inspection I noted that this was a Zephyr engine. This engine was one of those mechanical works of art that makes you understand why we love cars so much. But, as the commercials say, there is more. In fact there was one more. Standing side-by-side were two identical V12 Zephyr engines! Needless to say I began the meeting in a wonderful mood. Now I guess it's time to actually describe what went on last night.... Most of the meeting was taken up with talk about the upcoming May 15 Museum Car Show. That is the event that is normally in conflict with our Tri-State. However, this year that is not the case. The highlights of the discussion included: 1. The cost of registration would remain at $5.00; 2. The Mayor said he would attend (remember he didn't show up last year); 3. The class of each car entered would be determined when the car was entered at the gate; 4. A group of radio stations would be set up at the show; 5. There would be 300-450 spaces for cars; 6. Entry forms would be sent out via first class mail, so that they would arrive BEFORE the show; 7. Each car registered would be given two passes to the museum; 8. There would be a model car/toy show in the Museum and admission to this would be free; 9. Rich Ford would be approached to be a sponsor this year; and 10. I volunteered CNM to do the ballot counting again this year. I strongly encourage a good turnout by CNM this year. The Albuquerque Museum has been remodeled and this would be a convenient time to see what the museum has to offer. Also, as a Museum Show regular I have to say that this is one of the most enjoyable car shows that I have attended. With help from the Johnsons (they are really good at sneaking in early) we'll probably get the shaded area of the parking lot. The number of cars is expected to be higher this year, so you'll get to see all sorts of nice stuff. Also, our presence establishes us as a club in good standing with the car council. That makes my job a lot easier! So I expect to see you there (please..). Another item of interest to our club is the scheduled Car Council Picnic to be held on August 7. We have volunteered to take the lead in planning the event, so I hope you will keep this date open. The tentative plan is for us to caravan to the El Morro National Monument near Grants. I have to say that many times in my life I have let wonderful opportunities go by that later I have regretted. For example, I have yet to go to the World Series when the Cardinals are playing (maybe that isn't a good example owing to the Cards' performance last October) ... anyway, one event I hear about every year is the "Spring Thaw" that is put on at Worldwide Automotive. Worldwide Automotive, I have now found out, is right next door to the Old Car Garage and is owned by the the same guy-- Bob Agnew. The event is a fund raiser for the Cuidando los Ninos Daycare Center. The center is dedicated to helping the children of the homeless in Albuquerque. This is a very worthy cause, but the neatest thing is that this is an opportunity for you to bring your car in and have someone knowledgeable diagnose any problems you may have and also to have your oil and filter changed for the cost of a donation. It is a good deal. One angle that I didn't know about is that this is such a neat event that people show up who don't even have a car. They're there just to watch the goings on. Considering what shows up in the Old Car Garage this may be one of the cheapest thrills in town. Anyway, if you want to have your car serviced you'll need to make an appointment. Just call 881-2722. I just realized I didn't mention the date -- April 16. For you who have just given the IRS all of your money the day before, this is the bargain that you have been waiting for. I guess that's about all I have for this month except to mention that I announced to the council that CNM would be putting on a car show at the Sonic on Juan Tabo (next to Lowe's) on Saturday, April 23 from 8:30 to 1:00 (that is a hint for you CNM'ers to show up!). See ya. --- Robert Gold =CNM= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - April 1998 - Volume 24 - Number 4 THE COVER showed a rear view of a sharp 1960 coupe. David Patten rejoined CNM and a new member was Joel Craig. President Dennis ran our meeting and a guest was Dave Newman of Sacramento. Wendy counted up to $7,935 in the bank. Dennis showed us how to repair a Corvair tachometer using Radio Shack parts. Much of our Board Meeting time was devoted to plans for the Lake City Tri-State. Sad news was that member Bud Knapp had died. Bud was a gentleman of the old school and among his many vehicles were a 1901 Cadillac and an old Indian motorcycle, but he drove to CNM meetings in his 1965 Monza coupe. We reprinted, perhaps illegally, a short excerpt from Dave Barry's "Complete Guide to Guys" (well, it appeared on the Internet) in which he described the Chicagoland Corvair Enthusiasts' game of sucking gasoline into an old vacuum cleaner until it exploded. Barry allowed that this was really cool. Wives of club members said "insane" instead of cool. Two pages were devoted to stupid rules of thumb from Bubba's Garage. Finally, a mini-book-review: we heard about "Highways to Heaven" by Christopher Finch whose book covered the golden years of the automobile (basically, the 50's) in America; yes, Corvairs were featured. Fourteen Years Ago - April 1991 - Volume 17 - Number 4 THE COVER showed an electric motor powering a Corvair van in Phoenix. We had $777 in the bank. Jim Gould and Frederico Garza were visitors; a new member was Bill Davis. Meeting minutes reported on a lot of activities. President Steve Gongora complained that his Lakewood was in too good condition and he couldn't use it as a daily driver. Steve, we all deeply sympathize with your problem. Steve provided a tech tip with drawings and dimensions for a rear seat speaker enclosure. Mark Morgan's new location in Vicksburg, Mississippi was featured in the Billiken strip. Mark also reported that his Nissan pickup was totaled; he was wearing his seat belts and had minor bruises. Jerry Goffe invited us to tour the VLA Radio Telescope. Bill Reider reported on our New Member Packet. Well, no. =CNM= THE FRANCIS BOYDSTON AWARD is presented annually to a Tri-State CORSA Chapter member(s), in good standing who best exemplifies the influence, support, ideals, and values that Francis embodied. This may be jointly awarded to members and spouses or jointly to separate members if approved by the reviewing authority as detailed below. To commemorate the occasion, the recipient shall be awarded a plaque suitable for prominent display. The award shall read: ==================================================================== St. Francis of Corvair Francis Boydston Service Award For Outstanding Service and Contributions to Corvairs of New Mexico And Perpetuation of the Corvair AWARD RECIPIENT NAME DATE This award is bestowed in memory of Francis Boydston, a CNM founder and friend. ==================================================================== In addition to the individual plaque, there shall be a traveling plaque that has tags for the addition and date of each annual recipient(s). The cost of the award and engraving shall be borne by CNM. Two months prior to the next Tri-State meet, the CNM Vice President or an alternate appointed and designated by the CNM President shall make arrangements and retrieve the traveling plaque to be in CNM custody no less than five weeks prior to the next award presentation. The selection committee for the awards shall be comprised of three Tri-State Chapter members appointed by the CNM President who will work with and report to the CNM Vice President or the alternate appointed and designated by the CNM President. Members appointed to serve from non-CNM Tri-State Chapters shall be jointly appointed by that Chapter President and the CNM President. It is recommended that at least two of the three members be immediate past award recipients. It is preferable for the last three immediate recipients to serve on the selection committee. The CNM Vice-President, or designated alternate, shall achieve approval of the award by concurrence with a quorum of the officers of CNM and Presidents of the represented Tri-State Chapters. Guidelines for consideration for the Francis Boydston Award shall, in no particular priority, be: 1. Attend meetings and plan, coordinate or organize individual Tri-State Chapter and/or Tri-State Meet activities or events 2. Share Corvair knowledge and expertise. 3. Encourage owners to preserve, maintain and share in the lore of the Corvair. The presentation of the Francis Boydston Award shall be made at the annual Tri-State Meet Banquet or at a time and place designated by a majority of the Tri-State Chapter Presidents. The presentation shall be made by a CNM official, approved by a majority of the Tri-State Chapter Presidents, and supported by a representative of the recipient's Chapter. The content of the oral award presentation shall be scripted in advance and have achieved concurrence of the Francis Boydston Award Committee and the represented Tri-State Chapter Presidents or alternates designated by the CNM President. The oral award presentation and engraved plaque shall be prepared no later than one month prior to the annual Tri-State Meet Banquet or the otherwise designated time and place. =CNM= Francis Boydston Award Nomination This award is presented annually to a Tri-State CORSA Chapter member, in good standing who best exemplifies the influence, support, ideals and values exhibited by Francis Boydston with Tri-State Chapter members and other Corvair enthusiasts. This form shall be submitted to the CNM Vice President or an alternate appointed and designated by the CNM President. This form will be distributed in the March issue of the Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter and at the March Membership Meeting. Copies of the criteria and this form will be mailed and/or e-mailed to the other Tri-State Newsletter Editors and Presidents for publication and distribution to those chapters. Any exceptions to this deadline shall be made by agreement between the CNM Vice President or the appointed alternate and the CNM President.
