All officers were present and 23 members were in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the June newsletter. There were two guests, Bob Moore and Paul Hopkins. Both are possible new members. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $429.04 in the checking account and $2,561.31 in the GMAC account for a total of $2,990.55. Wendell said that he had transferred $600.00 from the checking account into the GMAC account in the past month. It does not pay a lot, but it is more than we get in the bank. Robert Gold reported on the Car Council meeting. Copies of his report were circulated. The Car Council picnic will be on August 7th at El Morro. CNM will be the host for the picnic and Robert has to find out what the Car Council will furnish in the way of finding. If you need to see the full report check the CNM web site. The baseball game was planned for June 11th. The game starts at 7:05 so we should meet in front of the stadium no later than 6:30. Admission is $8.50 if we have 20 or more, otherwise it is $10.00. The June breakfast is set for the 18th at Milly's on Jefferson; time is 8:30. July 4th is the Santa Fe car show. You must be a member of the Santa Fe club to show your car. To renew your membership now costs $20.00. On site the cost is $30.00. Members were reminded about the International CORSA Convention in Portland in July. The Martineks will be there. The Tri-State went well. Some CNM members had lunch in Durango on the way up. The car show was from 8:30 to 1:00 and there were 27 cars on display. Ben Benzel won the trophy for early models. CNM had a good turnout and it was reported that the food was good. The big winner was Wendell Walker who rightfully received the "Saint Francis of Corvair" or Boydston Award. WENDELL WENT BACK TO Durango the week after the Tri-State, had a great time, and won an award for his Challenger in their car show. Bill McClellan, who was a long time CNM member and is now living in a retirement home, sent a card thanking us for the birthday card that the Sunshine committee sent to him. Members were reminded that July 9th is the time for our next cleanup on Old Route "66". The time to start is 08:00 AM when it may still be cool. Del Patten said a lady who has a 1963 early coupe that she would like to sell contacted him. There is no title, and it doesn't run. All she wants is $1500.00! Who of us could resist. Jim didn't say so, but there are quite a few "for sale" ads for Corvairs on his web page. The meeting was adjourned at 20:25. =CNM= JUNE BOARD MEETING Chuck Vertrees THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO order on 6/15/05 at House of Covers at 17:13. Present were Jim Pittman, Wendell Walker, Geoffrey Johnson, Dave Huntoon, Steve Gongora and Chuck Vertrees. We had a guest, Dick Simmonds, visiting from Reno, Nevada. Dick is a long time friend of Jim's. Many years ago they were in the service in Alaska and made a few trips in Jim's 1966 turbo Corsa coupe. The minutes of the last board meeting were approved as printed in the June newsletter. Wendell reported that CNM had $429.04 in the checking account and $2,561.51 in the GMAC account for a total of $2,990.55. The baseball game was sold out and it started raining in the second inning. Many left but the game was restarted after a long rain delay. CNM will try to make a game later in the season, but probably on a week day. (Check elsewhere in the newsletter for our attending an Isotopes game on Thursday, July 28.) PLANS FOR THE CAR COUNCIL picnic in August are afoot. From Albuquerque it is about a two and one-half hour drive to El Morro, popularly known as "Inscription Rock" from the cliffs with many inscriptions left by travelers since the days of the Spanish conquistadors and the wagon train pioneers heading for California or maybe Oregon. Many may have stopped at Inscription Rock because of springs and a large pool of water that could be depended on at all times of the year. There is a Museum, a trail along the base of the cliff where most of the inscriptions are, and another trail that goes along the cliffs and up to the top of the rock formation for a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. There are quite a few picnic tables and flush toilets. It was suggested that those who would like to caravan could meet on I-40 at the Route 66 Casino at a specific time. By meeting there nobody would have to backtrack to a caravan meeting place closer to the city. Where is Route 66 Casino, you ask? Looking in the telephone book yields the information that it is at 14500 Central Ave, at I-40 exit 140. The latest word is, come to the Route 66 Casino, 14500 Central Ave, at I-40 exit 140 at about 8:30 AM on Sunday August 7, 2005 and be ready to move out at 9:00 AM sharp to caravan west on old Route 66 and/or I-40 to Grants. It is time to start thinking about next year's Tri-State which we will host. We should start thinking about a logo for the meeting. Bring your design for a 30th Anniversary Tri-State logo to the July meeting! All have agreed that the location of the Tri-State will be Montrose, Colorado, just a few miles north of Ouray, Colorado, the location of this year's Tri-State. The meeting was adjourned at 17:47 and then Wendell, Steve, Jim and Dick had a few minutes of fun changing the left rear tire on Wendell's convertible which had gone completely flat during the meeting... it picked up a nail. Fortunately Wendell had a spare and Steve had plenty of compressed air. =CNM= SUNSHINE COMMITTEE A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY wish goes to the following CNMers: Larry Blair July 15 Mark Domzalski July 8 Gayle Finch July 27 Richard Finch July 29 Emily Gongora July 9 Leslie Sullivan July 18 Kay Sutt July 31 Tarmo Sutt July 8 Nancy Urbassik July 6 Sunshine Committee =CNM= BREAKFAST AT MILLY'S JUNE 18TH Heula Pittman SIX OF US CNMers gathered at Milly's Restaurant on Jefferson this morning for breakfast. As usual, the food was terrific and the company was great. Sally was the most energetic of us all. She rode her bicycle from her house, about a 10 mile (one way) trip! Leslie and Kevin drove their Brand X, Jim and I enjoyed our ride in our Brand X (Miata with the hard top on) and Wendell was the only Corvair driver today. He was driving his red convertible loaded with new tires. The red early Corvair provided a focus for our photos despite the absence of one wheel cover. THE WEATHER WAS absolutely perfect. Thankfully these breakfast get-togethers are scheduled early so that we can get out before the temperature rises too much. It's too bad that some of our fellow members are night owls and sleep late and miss these events. Some people come to mind, but maybe I won't name them. Oh well, why not, maybe I will! Bill and Sylvan, we missed you!! This is a great occasion to get to know our fellow members. Maybe you should try to make one of these events sometime. Sally is great at planning them at different locations around the city so we don't meet at the same one each time. WE MEET ON the Saturday after the Board meeting at 8:30 AM. (The Board meeting is always the second Wednesday of the month.) We hope to see you next month. -- Heula =CNM= REPORT FROM THE CAR COUNCIL Geoffrey A Johnson ( geoffj @ unm.edu ) Plans for the August picnic were accepted. The council will supply soft drinks for the event. Election of officers for the council came up. Nominations were taken, and the election will be next month. There was heated debate about the council and what it does and needs to do to support the car hobby in town. Next month this will be discussed further. The direction the council is leaning towards is forming a committee of volunteers to keep track of legislation and other events. -Geoff =CNM= INFORMATION ON THE NMCCC PICNIC AT EL MORRO NATIONAL MONUMENT IN AUGUST Robert Gold From: ( beisbol30 AT aol.com ) To: ( oldcarnut1932 AT earthlink.net ) Cc: ( beisbol30 AT aol.com ) Date: 6/8/05 1:34:52 PM Subject: Car Council Picnic Hi Joyce-- I wasn't able to make the last car council meeting so I wanted to contact you about arrangements for the picnic. I brought up the picnic at the last Corvairs of New Mexico meeting and we're all ready to set things up. You mentioned to me that you had contact information. I'd appreciate it if you would let me know who I should contact. Also, any other suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. I want this to be as much fun as I had at the museum car show. Thanks for your help.-- Robert Gold From: J. Clements ( oldcarnut1932 AT earthlink.net ) To: beisbol30 AT aol.com Sent: Wed, 8 Jun 2005 23:25:45 -0600 Subject: RE: Car Council Picnic Hi Robert - It is El Morro National Monument, also known as Inscription Rock. It is 43 miles SW of Grants on a paved road. It has a visitors' center with restroom facilities, campground and a picnic area. Contact is: Superintendent, El Morro National Monument, Rt. 2, P.O. Box 43, Ramah, NM 87321 (505) 783-4226. There is a nice hiking trail to the top of the mesa and a spectacular view. We can meet somewhere on the west side of Albuquerque and drive to Grants (78 miles). We can go old Route 66 part of the way if desired. There is a McDonald's at the turnoff in Grants for potty and coffee stop. Drive from there is through piney hills and is very pretty. Probably it would be best for everyone to bring their own lunch, or we can work up a shared lunch program among the clubs. There is a $3 admission charge to the museum and hiking area, under 17 free. Maybe we can hit up the Council for drinks or something. Last time we were there about 4 years ago, there were several picnic tables scattered around the area surrounding the parking lot that would seat about 40 people. They didn't charge us to use them. As I recall, it is about 2 1/2 hours for a caravan to get there, and the trail takes about an hour to walk. They have a brochure available and will probably mail you one if you ask. Let me know how you guys want to set it up, and I'll be glad to help publicize and plan. Thanks. Joyce Clements --- oldcarnut1932 AT earthlink.net =CNM= TECH TIPS by Steve Goodman Denvair News - Rocky Mountain CORSA - June 2005 A WHILE BACK I was writing about curious oil leaks, those that have appeared 45 years later and not some that were common when the car was new. I can now add more curious wear points to the list. One fairly common wear point is the swivel for the clutch release bearing pull rod. It is hard as the dickens and I have seen them worn 3/4 of the way through and still work. Sometimes when badly worn the clutch action will make a clunking type noise, done by the worn spot getting moved over a little and then falling back into the low spot. Of course the swivel is easy to change and inexpensive enough. The next overlooked wear point is the locking nuts used on both the rocker arms as well as the rear mount on a late model. The nut itself is deformed on one side to grab the stud, and after a number of off and on motions, the nut has gotten pretty smooth and round. Usually you can tell when the 'locking' ability is failing because the nut will easily turn on the stud. Of course the need for caution is because if the two locking nuts that hold the rear of the engine to the mount fail, presto, the engine falls down in the back. That makes for some interesting sparks if you are traveling at speed at night. The next failure that is probably attributed to by age alone is fuses. I see fuses that appear to be in working order only to find that the link inside has broken. The fuse isn't black and the link isn't burned in the middle, it just doesn't work anymore. The only way to find the defect is to actually do a continuity test across the fuse. THE DOOR LATCH IS a curious piece, it uses several springs to do the job of latching and keeping tension on various parts. There is a spring that makes the latch 'follow' over the piece on the door jamb. If that spring breaks, closing the door has the possibility of injuring you because the door will jump away from the body quickly. The latch itself almost appears to be unrepairable, the pieces are put together in a way that almost defies disassembly without ruining something. Many times the latches will fail because of having the door slammed. Of course the driver's side finally just fails due to high usage. The next 'uncommon' wear point is the roll pin that goes through the distributor drive gear and shaft. This also drives the oil pump, so the need for a sturdy roll pin is paramount. When it shears while driving down the road, needless to say the car is dead. No rotor turning means no spark and no shaft turning means no oil pressure. I am not sure how to keep track of wear on the roll pin unless it just gets removed every 100K miles and replaced. I will say however that when this happens 15 miles east of Gunnison there is no cell phone service, so the CB is your only friend. Well, that and your AAA card. Actually several more friends come to mind. As you might guess, this happened to my Spyder a week before the Tri-state when I needed to visit with several folks in Ouray. Thanks to Harlan Colbum and Gary Hoffman of RMC for offering to help and Eric Schakel for taking me back to Gunnison a couple of days later and tow-barring the Spyder back to the shop. -- Steve Goodman * * * * * * * * * * * * FOR SALE, TRADE OR WANTED * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOR SALE: NOS parts: Call Bill Reider 299-4597 Distributor Plate 1993395 Delco $20 W/S wiper & washer switch 67-69 GM $35 Distributor Cap 60-61 Delco $ 4 Push Rod Tubes GM 6255650 5 @ $10 ea. Rocky Mountain CORSA put on a good show. For starters, Ouray, situated at the end of a box canyon, with Red Mountain pass to the south and the mountains on the east and west, it has got to be one of the most scenic spots in the country. Secondly, the weather cooperated and it was beautiful; and third we had a great bunch of Corvair people. We drove over Friday morning with the Wiltrouts, they in their Corvairs and Debbie and I in our Explorer. We made pretty good time with less than 3 hours to Gunnison, where we had lunch. After lunch we went to Montrose where the cars got washed since we had no idea what we would find in Ouray. There was some road construction around Cimarron and the gravel road was pretty nasty to be driving a Corvair with a nice paint job, but Michael's and Miles's cars survived. Between Montrose and Ouray there was a stretch of road being repaved. I've never in my life seen asphalt with so much oil in it. I could see the tracks where Michael drove on the pavement. Fortunately, the oil didn't kick up and stick to the cars. We checked into the motel and registered for the convention and then talked with friends for a while. For dinner, there were 15 of us that went to a restaurant on the main street which was really good. Saturday morning we got up early, well, early for us without kids or dogs to wake us up. All the Corvairs paraded down the main street to the city park and parked on the grass. If my count was correct there were 28 cars in the car display. Results of the judging are on page 11 of this issue. As I said, the weather was perfect, slightly cool in the park at 8:30 with a tee-shirt and sandals and just starting to get to warm at 1:00 when the show broke up. I did manage to get a slight sunburn but not much. After the show Debbie and I drove up Red Mountain pass and then took a bunch of pictures on the way back down, none of which did justice to the beauty all around us. The banquet was Saturday night with plenty of good food and lots of good company. The downside was when the Traveling Attendance Trophy was presented to Rocky Mountain CORSA. Now we have a big blank spot on the wall above the computer where it hung for the past year. After we lost that trophy, I hoped to win the SnapOn Tool Route 66 clock to take its place, but that went to Jim Brossard from Washington. CNM announced that next year's Tri-State will be in Montrose, since it was the location of the first Tri-State in 1976; the second in 1986; and the 20th anniversary in 1996; and now the 30th anniversary. It is tentatively scheduled for the first week in June. PPCC needs a good turn out so we can get the trophy back, the wall will look bare until then. The DRIPLINE Volume 29 Number 10 June 2005 Pikes Peak Corvair Club by Dennis Pleau The saga of the '66 continues. I worked on the oil leaks and got them under control. There is no way I could bring another Corvair to a Tri-State with an oil leak after I oiled down the parking lot a couple of years ago. The main oil leak was the pan gasket. When I went to tighten the pan a bunch of oil squeezed out and I stripped a pan bolt. Tightening wasn't going to fix the problem. I drained the oil and pulled the pan. The gasket was really soft - I've never seen one like it before. The pan was also pretty bent up, and I had much straighter one in the barn. I ordered a pan gasket from the Underground and had them ship it priority and got it a couple of days later. I bought new bolts, as the ones which were in there were only 1/2 inch long and I replaced them with 7/8 inch bolts. I helicoiled the stripped bolt hole and the second one I stripped when installing the pan. I filled it up, warmed up the engine - no oil leaks!. NEXT STEP WAS to get it aligned. The front tires had started wearing recently. I took it into the alignment shop, brought my shop manual with a sticky note on the pages with the specifications and the adjustment procedures. I got a call back about an hour later saying I need both lower ball joints, the idler arm, the left inner tie rod-end and a pitman arm bushing. I ordered parts from both Clarks and the Underground and was going to have the alignment shop install them so I could still make the Tri-State in a Corvair, but then I got cheep, the alignment shop wanted $280 to install the parts, and I just couldn't pay that much to have parts which I could install myself in a few hours. So we took the Exploder. I'm not sure the 110 engine in the '66 would have kept up with Miles and Mike on the way over. On some stretches of road, they made really good time. Maybe, it'll be ready for the next brunch meeting. I had a great time at the Tri-State, seeing a lot of my old friends. It was an outstanding car display, lots of pretty cars and a beautiful setting. I didn't take many pictures of the cars. We took a ride up Red Mountain Pass and took a lot of pictures. I was especially glad to see Wendell Walker win the Saint Francis of Corvairs award. He's a good friend. Next years Tri-State will be in Montrose probably the first weekend of June, put on by Corvairs of New Mexico. -- Dennis =CNM= Seven Years Ago - July 1998 - Volume 24 - Number 7 OUR COVER SHOWED THE presentation of the first Saint Francis of Corvair Award, presented at the Lake City, Colorado Tri-State. President Dennis ran our June meeting and Treasurer Wendell said we had $6542 to save or spend. Steve modeled our new CNM polo shirt. We learned on the day of the June board meeting that Ilva Walker had a heart attack and was not doing well. Most of the newsletter revolved around the Tri-State event. Dennis Pleau said it was perfect and complemented Kay and Tarmo on an outstanding job of organizing. Reports were submitted by Mary Lou Martinek, Debbie Pleau, Kim Patten, Mark Martinek, Ilva Walker, Elizabeth Domzalski, Mark Domzalski, Chuck & Julia Vertrees, Tarmo & Kay Sutt and Heula & Jim Pittman, with many photos by LeRoy Rogers, Bill Reider and others. Among the many awards: Ralph McDonald for "best of show" for his 1969 Monza coupe. This special 16-page newsletter was mailed to everyone who attended the Tri-State in Lake City! Fourteen Years Ago - July 1991 - Volume 17 - Number 7 THE COVER SHOWED the path of the July 11 total solar eclipse that passed over Mexico City; what did this have to do with Corvairs? Karen and Clayborne had a new baby boy in May. Jerry Goffe reported 453 cars showed up for the Albuquerque Museum car show; Tarmo and Kay got a first place trophy with the '64 Monza convertible they recently sold. Twenty-one CNM members and affiliates went to Gunnison for the Tri-State but Denver beat us out for the most members attending. Bill Reider distributed the new membership booklets. President Steve Gongora reported that Milton Sanchez and Ed Black's Chevrolet made the All Chevy Show a big success and claimed the watchword for the coming Tri-State trip was "Vairvegnugen." ( umlaut over the "u" ) Tech tips included using a VW backup light switch in your early model, adding Chevron's "Techron" to your gas to reduce pinging, and psychoanalyzing yourself so you could change from a stressed-out Road Warrior to a calm Easy Rider. Twenty-one Years Ago - July 1984 - Volume 10 - Number 7 AN INTREPID DRIVER with a rocket strapped to his Corvair graced our cover. Don't try this at home, folks! At our last meeting we watched films showing a fleet of 1960 Corvairs driving from Detroit to Panama and a year later some 1961 Corvairs making the same trip through the jungles. Incredible! Sylvan previewed our Econo Run to Bandelier National Monument for a picnic. LeRoy reported on the Club's trip to Alamogordo, White Sands and the Space Hall of Fame. Bill Reider's monthly column talked about wheel and tire sizes. He said if you wanted lots of rubber on the road, there were plenty of combinations to choose from. We also had a tech tip on checking your tires before taking a trip. Twenty-eight Years Ago - June/July 1977 - Volume 3 - Number 5 OUR COMBINED JULY/JULY issue reported that we met on the sidewalk under the stars as we temporarily had no Ed Black's sponsor to open the door to the usual meeting place. We had a poker rally and were planning for a Winrock Car Show. There was discussion of an "Intermountain TriState" meet in Montrose, Colorado. Yes, the "Intermountain TriState" event happened, and later turned into our friend the "Tri-State Meet" and has had a healthy run thus far. A tech tip told how to clean out your old grungy fuel tank and protect it against further corrosion. Finally, an oft-told story: a reprinted article related how a couple, smitten with the New Car Bug, made the rounds of all the new and used car dealers but after comparing the features of all those more "modern" cars, decided to keep their faithful old Monza for a few more years. =CNM= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | July | August | September | | | | | | : : : : : 1 2 | : 1 2 3 4 5 6 | : : : : 1 2 3 | | 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | | 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | | 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | | 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 | 28 29 30 31 : : : | 25 26 27 28 29 30 : | | 31 : : : : : : | : : : : : : : | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Mon 4 Jul early! I have been working a goodly amount on the former library van and things are finally going back together. Finished with the taking things apart aspect and now is the assembling. Things are going quickly now and the only major task is all the door weather strips. With 8 doors to do I may find the rhythm after 6 doors or so. You never know. I did find the remnants of a sticker above the driver's door indicating it was a US government vehicle. A Federal Communications Commission van. Wonder how they used it? Also, when I removed the interior trim panel above the windshield, I found an Albuquerque street map from 1959. Someone likely stuffed it there between the headliner and trim panel and then it must have fallen further behind the trim panel to its final resting place. On the map, there is nothing north of Montgomery Blvd. and not much east of Juan Tabo. What is kind of interesting is that Lomas east of Eubank does not continue east, but turns off to the southeast! It heads off to what is now the Four Hills area. Never knew that! Events to look for include the Santa Fe car show / pancake event on July 4. Next would be our Old Route 66 cleanup, I think on the 9th, and the CNM breakfast on the 23rd. I won't be at the next meeting as I am going back to Illinois for a family visit. Up for discussion at the next meeting (the one I won't be there for) will be the meeting place and time for the Car Council picnic on August 7th. Since we will be traveling west to El Morro, a spot to meet for those wishing to caravan should be on the west side. I was thinking that the Route 66 Casino parking lot would be adequate. How about meeting there and leaving at 9 am sharp? You can fill up there and lose some money at the casino all in one place. So talk it over and let Robert know so he may inform the other Car Council members. So, everybody be safe and have a nice holiday. See you when I get back. -- Dave Huntoon =CNM= VARIOUS NEWS ITEMS FROM THE WEB PAGE Date: Sat, 18 Jun 2005 07:37:05 -0600 From: Paleofish ( sbuna AT unm.edu ) To: Jim Pittman ( casa AT unm.edu ) Subject: corviary stuffs Jim - can you print this in the newsletter: We are going to do another isotopes game on July 28th -- it is a Thursday night. So that we can sit in the seats we need to, I need to purchase the tickets a week before the game. If we get less that 20 people it will be $8 per ticket; if we get more than 20 it will be $6.50 per ticket. I need to collect all the money for people who are going by the 20th of July so that I can purchase tickets. Bring your money to the July meeting! ==Sally Williams== LETTER FROM MARY LOU & MARK MARTINEK forwarded by Wendell Walker .... Hello! Sorry we didn't make it to Ouray, we know it was great. We drove our RV from WA state to VA & back. Took us exactly a month, had friends & family to see from California, got back to our home May 6th, so are still playing catch up on the yard etc, and are broke. Miss all our friends in CNM, we'll help our new club with the convention in Portland, 10 miles from our place. Take care and have a good summer. We are "super" busy with Grand Children's sports etc, Hugs -- Mary Lou & Mark RECENT FOR SALE AD: FOR SALE: 1965 Monza coupe 1966 Corsa coupe Both are parts cars - there are various extra parts. It was garage kept until a year ago and has 41K on the odometer. She says the body is good, but the top has a tear. Her son just bought it but she is making him sell it because of the other unfinished car projects he has. If you are interested, let me know and I'll have her contact you. Dennis ( ddpleau AT earthlink.net ) =CNM= INFORMATION ABOUT T-SHIRTS AT OURAY TRI-STATE Steve Goodman Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 20:03:52 -0600 From: Steve Goodman ( rearengine.steve AT worldnet.att.net ) To: casa AT unm.edu Subject: RE: T-shirt orders for Ouray Hello Jim: Someone from CNM asked about the T-shirt sales at Ouray this year and I don't recall who it was but below is the number/size of shirts order and sales account: SIZE ORDERED NUMBER LEFT OVER ==== ======= ================ SM 10 3 left over MD 10 sold out LG 25 sold out -- suggest an increase XL 15 sold out XXL 15 5 left over -- suggest a decrease A total of 75 were ordered as you can see above. Probably a couple more of each that were sold out could have been sold. Since there were 100 (102) at the banquet, that means that 67 bought T-shirts. Typically many couples will buy two and of course other couples will buy just one. Maybe, just maybe if there had been a couple more XL they could have been sold. Jim, please pass the above along at your next meeting. Tell everyone THANKS for attending this year for me as well as the entire RMC group and we will be looking forward to Montrose next year. THANKS Best, Steve
