Critics insist it's no accident. Last week, just days before the NCI announced its new lung-cancer initiative, the Federal Trade Commission reported that the tobacco industry spent $15.2 billion marketing cigarettes in the United States in 2003 (the most recent year on record) -- up from $12.7 billion in 2002 and $6.7 billion in 1998. Twenty-two members were present including all officers, except vice president Sally who was out of town. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $246.20 in the regular checking account and $2,576.57 in the GMAC fund for a total worth of $2,822.77. There were no new members to introduce, however, past member and President Clayborne Souza turned up for a visit. They were on their way back from a vacation and were on their way back to California. He has been working for NAPA Rental for the past 3-1/2 years. They live in Delmar, California and Clayborne says that they only have four Corvairs right now. The kids are all grown up now and everyone is doing fine. Robert Gold reported that the Car Council brought it up to him that this time there is a picture of a Corvair on the poster advertising the swap meet this fall. Everything is all set for the Car Council Picnic at El Morro. Arrangements for the chilled drinks are all made. Ranger Fred Nemso, who is into old trucks, will give us a talk at noon about El Morro. Also there will be a "Rolling Thunder" car show on August 27th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Wal-Mart at Academy and Wyoming. Sunday September 25th is CNM's day at the State Fair. The monthly breakfast will be on Saturday the 20th at Milly's on Jefferson NE (near the Journal Center) at 08:30 AM. We discussed the topic of our not having many tech talks anymore, and were they missed. The consensus was that yes, they were missed. We had three volunteers for some future talks. At the September meeting Wendell Walker will discuss brake system upgrades. In October Bernie Urbassik will talk about steering wheel refinishing and repair. Sometime in the future Larry Blair will tell what you can do to your instrument cluster. The membership was asked to check with people on the outside who could give us presentations. In the past we have had some very interesting presentations. Bill Reider received the order of oil filters from Clark's and so far has passed on, if I heard correctly, 73 filters. If you ordered filters, see Bill. Tarmo Sutt brought up the possibility of having exchange students ride in Corvairs in the State Fair Parade on September 10th. He and Kay have been very active in the exchange student program. There are currently 23 students in the area and possibly twenty students would be interested. The membership thought this would be a great idea. We need to organize this so that there will be enough Corvairs. Convertibles would be nice, but other Corvair models will do just fine. Tarmo will follow up as soon as possible since the time is getting close. The meeting was adjourned at 20:18. =+CNM+= AUGUST BOARD MEETING Chuck Vertrees THE MEETING WAS CALLED to order on 8/17/05 at 17:14 at House of Covers. Present were Wendell Walker, Robert Gold, Jim and Heula Pittman, Chuck and Julia Vertrees, Steve and Rita Gongora, and President Dave Huntoon. Vice President Sally Williams was in Spain. Treasurer Wendell reported that CNM has $291.20 in the checking account and $2,576.57 in the GMAC fund for a total worth of $2,867.77. The Car Council picnic which CNM hosted went off great. There were 30 to 35 cars in attendance and they covered a wide range of makes, some of which I do not remember at past Car Council picnics. It was brought up that this time there was a destination that would entail more that 20 to 30 minutes of driving. Those who thought of going would have to make actual plans instead of thinking "That would be a nice event to go to" but when the day came it was probably "It would be nice, but we have other things to do today." The only problem with the location was that the picnic tables were scattered instead of all together. It was decided that CNM would probably volunteer to host the picnic next year also, so we need to start looking for possible sites now. One suggestion was the picnic area north of Cochiti Lake and another was a picnic area near Tijeras. We need to thank Carl Johnson for making contact with the Ranger Station at El Morro and arranging the talk that the Ranger gave us and the way that they had a nice parking area marked off for the Car Council cars. The car show at the State Fair on September 25th is all set up. The fair management really likes CNM. They told Robert that we are great to get along with, do what we say we will do, and don't cause any trouble. We are going to get a great location again this year. The annual Christmas party is all set up for this year. It will be at Kirtland Air Force Base Officer's Club on Sunday December 4th, starting at 12:00. Mark your calendar now because you don't want to miss this. The monthly breakfast will be at Milly's on Jefferson this coming Saturday at 08:30. We will try to e-mail or phone members to help them remember. One of the members picked up one of the many free newspapers around Albuquerque called "Best Deals on Wheels" the other day. In the center was a full page advertising the Pontiac GTO Club. We will find out what a spread like this would cost because there are a lot of Corvairs in town whose owners apparently do not know about CNM. Every now and then I see a Corvair on the street and do not recognize the driver. The widow of a past Corvair owner named Fred Fish lives in Edgewood and has a Corvair that was her husband's and she would like to sell it. Dave Huntoon and Dell Patten went over to see it. It is a 1965 Monza 2-door with tinted glass. It has been repainted in an acceptable Corvair yellow. There was some discussion on what it should be called. The interior is spotless black and white. It has 42,000 miles on it and it is garaged and immaculate. She is asking $4,000 as a starting price and it is being advertised on Virtual Vairs. Robert Gold was going to renew the license on one of his many cars the other day and found the cost for an annual license had just about doubled since the last time he renewed. As a result he has changed at least two of his licenses to "Horseless Carriage" plates which cost $15.00 for 5 years. You need to check on this and see if you can live with the restrictions on this kind of a license. Time for the Tri-State is getting close. LeRoy Rogers wants a logo for the 30th Anniversary shirts and patches. He is going to Montrose, Colorado next month to get things set up. Dave said that he had an idea for a design. Anyone with an idea please submit it to the board. It does not have to be finished art. We have enough members who can polish it up for you. The Tri-State will be on Memorial Day weekend so that most of the children can go. Everyone should start collecting door prizes and items for the goody bags. The meeting was adjourned at 18:07. -- Chuck =+CNM+= BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES The Sunshine Committee Happy September Birthday to the following CNMers: Susanne Hickerson September 1 Lori Nash September 8 Kevin Sullivan September 9 Dave Huntoon September 17 Carl Johnson September 17 September Wedding Anniversaries: Brenda and Hurley Wilvert September 3 Emma and LeRoy Rogers September 4 Kathy and Larry Blair September 8 Kay and Tarmo Sutt September 24 The Sunshine Committee =+CNM+= BREAKFAST AT MILLY'S WITH FELLOW CNMERS Heula Pittman THE DOMZALSKIS DROVE their Rampside. It was great visiting with Elizabeth and Mark who had recently returned to New Mexico from their five-month-tour of duty in DC. They shared stories with us of some of the places of interest they had visited in the area. We think they were glad to be back home to the "dry heat" of the Land of Enchantment. Dave drove the library van to the gathering and allowed us to take a peek into the interior, showing us some of the work he had done to restore it. Wow! Did it look nice. Good job, Dave! Wendell drove his convertible and as usual it looked quite spiffy and ready to roll. LeRoy and Jim and I arrived in our Brand-Xs. After stuffing on the delicious foods of Milly's, we then split up and headed out our separate ways to get started on our respective duties of the weekend. =+CNM+= NEW AND PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS Sylvan Zuercher Wibke & Robert Garrecht have joined the club! They have a 1966 Monza coupe and are CORSA members. Bob Moore of Edgewood joined. He has a 1966 Monza coupe and is a CORSA member. Paul Hopkins may be joining the club! He borrowed a Corvair for a few days and, who knows, may be getting hooked. Bill Hector, a former member, may be getting back into the Corvair hobby. Let's give a big welcome to our new and prospective members! =+CNM+= PRESIDENT'S LETTER FOR SEPTEMBER David Huntoon LATELY, IN AUGUST, OUR BIG CLUB event was the car council picnic at El Morro. Seems to me it was well attended with 30 - 40 cars present. Half dozen street rods, half dozen Tbirds, half dozen Corvairs and others. In typical New Mexico summer tradition, it rained in the afternoon. Actually more like a 30 minute shower and things began to break up about that time anyway. I think the next time, if we can, I would like a site that has some shelter. As it was, El Morro has picnic tables but scattered. My opinion is that a shelter would be more conducive to meeting those people we may not know. Sort of everyone in one place rather than scattered about. I drove the 8 door (formerly known as the "Library Van") and had no problems at all. Well, the windshield leaks and I blew out an exhaust gasket. The one between the exhaust log and the crossover pipe. I like loud cars, but an exhaust like like this is just annoying. Needless to say, it is now fixed. It's 300 miles and 19+ mpg with foot to the floor for a lot of those long hills. That can't help the mpg figure much. It actually runs smooth at 65 mph and that seems like a good cruising speed. The next event on our calendar is the state fair car show this month on the 25th. You know the drill, meet at the SW corner of San Mateo and Central. Should be 8 a.m. I think, drive in together to the fairgrounds, park, have some breakfast, enjoy the other aspects of the fair and then breakup around 3 p.m. Thanks to Robert for his work on the state fair show and his work with the car council on the picnic. Another thing that comes to mind is the 2006 TriState. We need a design for the front and back of our shirts. Something to signify this is the 30th year would be nice, but any refreshing ideas would be appreciated. You need not be an artist for this, a good idea and sketches would be fine. We can have someone flesh out the design if need be, the idea is the thing. I would like to have this part of our TriState completed by the next meeting. Send your design thoughts, sketches, layouts to me. Looking for 3 people to help judge. That decision will be presented to the board for final approval. Here is your chance to prove we are not all aging, boring, unartistic and uncreative with an unexplainable affinity for a strange little car. I know you can do it. See you at the next meeting - Dave - Bring your ideas. ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | September | October | November | | | | | | : : : : 1 2 3 | : : : : : : 1 | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | | 25 26 27 28 29 30 : | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 30 : : : | | : : : : : : : | 30 31 : : : : : | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Wed 7 Sep 7:30 PM Regular Meeting - GALLES CHEVROLET 1601 Lomas NE Sat 10 Sep 1:00 PM CNM Ladies - TBA Sat 17 Sep early! Firstly, this is not my car. Being President of Corvairs New Mexico (CNM), I get calls quite often from people not in our club trying to sell their Corvair. My name, number and email address appear on our website so people do a "Corvair" search and see my info. If you are interested in finding all the unknow Corvairs in your area first, get elected President of your club. It really works. This one belongs to an elderly lady about 30 minutes east of Albuquerque. She is moving to the Dallas area to be nearer her son since she is on her own now. It is a 2 owner, 43k original miles, 1965 2 door Monza. Basically untouched, un- modified 110 hp, 4 speed. Tinted glass, AM radio. Always garaged by present owner. They had it stripped and nicely repainted at some time. Crocus yellow with white upholstery and black interior trim. To my eye it is a stunning combination. No rust, no dents, smooth paint with a few paint chips along the beltline from garage mishaps - my guess. Tires good but not new, starts fine, runs smooth, no smoke. Steering tight, brake pedal high and hard. Did not drive it though. Been sitting but not neglected since the husband's health deteriorated. To me it looks like a good used Corvair you could find on any Chevy used car lot in 1970. Time capsule stuff. Some parts with it and a parts car too if interested. Call Lea Fish (owner) at 505 281 5537, she is a little hard of hearing so be prepared. There is a $4k bid on it now. Dennis ran our meeting at Casa Chevrolet and Mark was the new president of CORSA. We had $6,830 according to Wendy's computer program. Several members reported on the St. Louis convention. Closer to home, the Albuquerque Urban Council was trying to get a Transportation Museum started, to be located near the railroad station. We discussed getting a new club banner. Did we want a 25th Anniversary celebration next March? Dennis told us more details about the convention, Heula reported on the flagpole-raising at Ruth's cabin in the Pecos, Dave reported on going to St Louis (almost) in his VW bug, and Herb Berkman told about some of the problems and difficulties that cropped up at past conventions. Fourteen Years Ago - September 1991 - Volume 17 - Number 9 The cover showed Wayne Christgau's famous 1967 Monza parked at the Billy the Kid Museum at Fort Sumner. It wasn't IN the museum; Wayne was just visiting. We planned a trip to Flagstaff. Our Aspencade was to go to Rancho de Chimayo for lunch. Ilva Walker donated a hand-woven tapestry to the Club to be raffled at the Christmas party. President Steve Gongora thanked Dick Cochran for putting on a terrific econo run with a trip to the Indian ruins and lunch at the CO-OP in Estancia. Wendell Walker's automatic Corvair got 31.1 MPG and Will Davis got 36.2 MPG with a manual. LeRoy previewed the State Fair show. We reprinted a newspaper photo of Ralph (who) sitting in an early Corvair at the CORSA convention. Did he have a nervous smile on his face? Steve reported on the trip to Flagstaff. Wayne Christgau contributed an interesting article on adventures with his Corvair in the USA and in Greece with the USAF. Finally, Orville Eliason told us about vacuum leaks and how to cure them. Twenty-one Years Ago - September 1984 - Volume 10 - Number 9 Artist, writer and past president Mark Morgan provided a sketch of a fanciful London double-decker bus for our cover. Sure enough, inside there was another great article by Mark about driving in Europe, one of a series. Bill Reider's regular column reported on the use of unleaded gasoline in Corvairs. Twenty-eight Years Ago - September/October 1977 - Volume 3 - Number 7 At the State Fair car show, awards went to Francis Boydston, Clay Keen, Benny Abeyta, Steve Gongora, Hector Gongora, Glen Thompson, Doug Morgan and Joe Vertrees. Our car show at Winrock was good with at least eight Corvairs, including James Giblin's 1961 Lakewood and Brian Ballou's 1966 V-8 Corvair. Glen Thompson officially resigned as newsletter editor and Baxanne Hunt was reported to be taking over the job. Did she? I don't think so. Ike Meissner planned a "rally race" for the club in Pojoaque, with lunch at "The Line Camp". A club dinner at Bella Vista was well attended. This issue proved to be the last for the year 1977. =+CNM+= THE OLD CAR GARAGE CAR OF THE MONTH (Report of the Car Council meeting of July 27, 2005) Robert Gold AS MOST OF YOU KNOW I'm a baseball nut. I'm so far gone that even though there is a perfectly good team here in town I drag the family all over the country to attend mostly minor league games. This year we made a trip to Branson, MO stopping in Tulsa to see the Springfield Cardinals play the Tulsa Drillers. I was motivated to see the Cardinals (minor league) in their inaugural year. Anyway, one thing I've noticed about my baseball experiences is that I seem not to be around when something cool happens. I'll usually be getting refreshments when the monster home run is hit or I'll be staring off into space when a batter is hit and the benches clear. Anyway, that is how I felt when I attended the this car council meeting. You see, Geoff Johnson was kind enough to attend the previous meeting in my place and he got to see various members yelling at the officers and then walk out of the meeting. So what did I get to see this time?..... nothing much Oh yes, there was the annual election of officers and other business going on, but absolutely no drama. So alas, be prepared to hear about a rather bland get together. In keeping with the general tone of the meeting I have to say that the selection of cars in the Old Car Garage was not up to the high standards that I grown to expect. There was a gray Plymouth station wagon from the early 50's that had me reminiscing about how life was when I hadn't reached double digits, but it was far from spectacular. There was a rather nice early Mustang 2+2, but being a Corvair sort of guy I'm not going to mention any more about it. All I can say is that I would rate Steve Gongora's display at the last Board meeting far above this group. I guess you can't have a peak experience every month... So now I'll just focus in on the meeting. My main interest in attending this month was to finalize the arrangements for the car council picnic to be held on Sunday, August 7. A small problem had arisen over a fee that was required for a group to use the facilities. Thanks to Carl Johnson we became aware of a $100 special use fee before we arrived en masse at the Monument. Carl had called the Park Ranger, Fred Moosman to arrange for a talk to the group. Anyway, we got everything cleared up and I submitted the application and fee in plenty of time. I want to especially thank Carl for contacting the ranger. It always makes it nicer when members step up to help with events. What is also nice is that the council voted to reimburse me for paying the $100. Also, the issue of supplying cold drinks at the picnic was quickly dealt with by various council members. In fact, the club reps at the meeting indicated a lot of interest in the picnic. This may be the best attended one to date As you all know summertime is an active time for car shows of all sorts. A number of flyers for upcoming shows were distributed at the meeting. I want to first acknowledge one flyer in particular. It is for the car council swap meet that is scheduled for September 23-25 in Los Lunas. I'll have copies to distribute at the next CNM meeting. Anyway, Joyce Clements pointed out to me that she made a special effort to include a drawing of a Corvair on the flyer. The Corvair was pictured among several very nice cars of different makes. I think CNM should thank Joyce for her recognition of the Corvair. It is nice to see the car and our club recognized in this way. Yea Joyce!! BACK TO THE UPCOMING car shows... there were several reps from the Sandia Heights Neighborhood Association in attendance to promote a jazz band event to be held on Saturday, Aug 6 at 7:00 pm at the Sandia Heights four Seasons Pool and Tennis Club. If you are interested in showing a car just show up, go down the road to the tram and follow the signs. Another event is the "Rolling Thunder Car Show" that will be held on Saturday, Aug 27 from 9am to 3pm at the Walmart at Academy and Wyoming. The event is a fundraiser for the Children's Miracle Network and the Young Readers Sponsorship Program. There is definitely lots to do during the remaining weeks of this summer The meeting wrapped up with elections. I'll have the names of the new officers to you as soon as I can remember who they are. My notes are a mess and I seem to be having a real problem remembering names as I get older. I can say at this time that I'm sure the council is in capable hands for the next year. One note of interest was that one of the council regulars asked if I would be interested in being a member of the board. I think that was a nice thought, but until I retire in a couple of years I just don't have the time. CNM is my main focus I guess that's all for now. See you at the picnic!! -- Robert Gold =+CNM+= STATE FAIR CAR SHOW PREVIEW Robert Gold CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO will be holding our eighth annual State Fair Car Show on Sunday, September 25. This is the last day of the Fair. We'll meet at the Furr's Cafeteria parking lot on the southwest corner of Central and San Pedro at around 7:00 AM and will leave around 7:20 to enter the Fairgrounds through gate 3. This is the furtherest gate to the south on San Pedro. Admission, if we are lucky, will not have to be paid when we enter the fairgrounds. We will be parking on Heritage Ave just south of the Manuel Lujan Building. Show times are from 8:00 AM to approximately 3:30 PM. Ribbons will be awarded for three "best of" classes and seventeen novelty classes. This should assure that you'll be getting at least one ribbon to display to the world. As in the past I'll be asking those CNM'ers in attendance to do the judging. That way we'll all share in the joy of awarding the ribbons. You'll get to display your awards as soon as the judging is completed, which should be before lunch. If you have any questions call Robert or Anne Mae Gold in the evenings at 268-6878 or send email to: beisbol30 AT aol. DOT com We've had good support for this show in the past, so let's keep up the good work this year!! See you there. -- Robert Gold =+CNM+= CORSA CONVENTION REPORT Mark Martinek I MEANT TO WRITE an article earlier about the convention but we are tied up with Mary Lou's sister locating a house here and moving up from California. The members of Corvairs of New Mexico missed a good convention. Mary Lou and I ended up being listed as coming from Corvairs of New Mexico instead of the local club. When we registered they asked for all the Corvair clubs we belong to so I listed CNM first. When the computer pulled up club affiliation it selected the first in line. So although no one came up from Albuquerque, CNM was given credit for two members in attendance. Mary Lou and I did get involved in the operation albeit limited. Mary Lou worked in the hospitality room for a few hours and I helped out on the car display. In addition Debbie & Dennis Pleau were also involved in the concours and award banquet. The weather for the convention was more in tune with the New Mexico weather than what is thought of as Northwestern weather. It was sunny, warm, clear skies and no rain for the complete convention. Mount St Helens cooperated by sending up a steam plume or two during the convention that were highly visible from the hotel. We took the Columbia River dinner cruise. Had great weather for it and good food served buffet style. The cruise was from the Hotel dock near the I-5 bridge up- river to Roster Rock and back. Lasted about 3 hours and allowed for seeing a beautiful sunset over the lower river. Everything seemed to go off with minimal problems. The concourse ran smoothly with Dennis P doing the announcing. The car display was well attended and had some real nice vehicles on display. Mary Lou's car was a non winner in the display but we don't feel bad as the competition was immense. WE WERE SURPRISED at the award banquet when the CNM newsletter and Jim Pittman were announced as the first place selection. The 30th anniversary issue was singled out as a heavy factor in its selection. Attached are some photos of the car display and dinner cruise. I hope you find some of this useful for the newsletter. Mark & Mary Lou Martinek (360) 896-3807 mjmartinek AT juno.com =+CNM+= CAR COUNCIL PICNIC AT EL MORRO NATIONAL MONUMENT Oliver Scheflow Our gathering place to start the picnic tour was at the Route 66 Casino just beyond the Rio Puerco bridge on Interstate 40 east of Albuquerque. We talked and took photos and then I joined a caravan of about 8 cars to head west on I-40. We left the freeway just east of Grants and took NM 53 south for twenty miles and then it turned west and started gaining altitude. Soon we left the open scrub cactus and were in a pine and fur tree forest and crossed the continental divide at 7,882 feet. On arriving at El Morro, we found the rangers had reserved the whole parking lot for us. There were about 30 cars, Ford Rods, T-Birds, Mustangs, a Studebaker, Lincolns, Corvairs and Brand Xs. The parking lot and picnic area were level with the 240-foot high white sandstone bluff to the west. The bluff was about three-quarters of a mile long, with a flat top which contained two Anasazi pueblos, one of which had been excavated in 1950. At the north end base was a pool of water that was the source of water for early travelers. It was fed by snow melt and rain run off. Shortly after arriving, a ranger gave us a talk on the history of the area. It was on the east-west Indian trade route and later a pioneer route to California. In 1857, P. Gilmor Breckenridge led a camel caravan and inscribed his name on the bluff wall, as did everyone else who passed by. Among the thousands of inscriptions are Indian petroglyphs and signatures of fifteenth-century Spanish explorers. In 1868 the route was surveyed by the Union Pacific, but the railroad took its route through Grants instead. The picnic area was just north of the parking lot and consisted of separate secluded sites. The visitors' center had a novelty and book store and a small museum showing the history and animals of the area. There also was a video of the area. All in all it was a very interesting and beautiful place and everyone seemed to have a good time. Those attending from our Club were: Anne Mae, Robert, Javier and Sara Gold; Dave Huntoon; Carl and Geoff Johnson and Geoff's girlfriend; Kim & Del Patten; Ollie Scheflow; Wendell Walker; and Julie and Chuck Vertrees. Heula & Jim Pittman came to the Route 66 Casino to get photos of the start of the tour. Thanks to all who helped make this tour possible! =+CNM+= TOUR TO GILMAN TUNNELS Saturday 17 September 2005 Wendell Walker The Santa Fe contingent will leave at about 8:00 AM on Saturday morning and drive down the freeway and west on NM 550, then turn south on NM 528 and look for the J & R Vintage Auto Museum on the left. No doubt they will enjoy the view across the river to Sandia Mountain as they drive. They will arrive at the J & R Museum at about 9:30 AM where the Albuquerque contingent will be waiting. The group will feast on breakfast burritos until 10:00 when the Museum opens. After visiting the museum we will all head north on NM 528 and turn left (north west) on NM 550, headed for San Ysidro. There we will turn right on NM 4 and drive up toward Jemez Pueblo, turning right onto highway 290 to go to the Ponderosa Winery, a few miles up the road. At the winery there may be an opportunity to taste wine and probably an opportunity to purchase a bottle or two. Soon we'll head back to NM 4, turning right to go through Jemez Pueblo, and keeping a sharp eye out for the left turn onto NM 485. The road crosses Jemez River and heads right up a canyon to the Gilman tunnels where, with any luck, there will be a healthy waterfall to admire. When we are ready, we'll back-track to NM 4, turning left to go to the village of Jemez Springs where we will have a choice of several restaurants for a late lunch. The Santa Fe folks will return home via Pojoaque and the Albuquerque folks can go that way so as to enjoy the drive by Valle Grande and Los Alamos. Or, we may just return via NM 4 and San Ysidro. This should be a nice trip, especially for those who haven't seen these attractions. The photo below was made by Mark Martinek on a similar tour back in November 2000.
