All officers were present and there were 32 people in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $270.66 in the checking account and $2,398.99 in the GMAC fund for a total worth of $2,669.65. Bill Hector has rejoined CNM. Also present were Jerry Chapman from Los Lunas and two other gentlemen, one of whom had been a member back in the 70's. Unfortunately I could not hear their names. Robert Gold said that he was actually able to make the Car Council meeting since he was in town for this one. There was a large turnout for stuffing the envelopes to mail out entries for the Museum Car Show. About half were CNM members. Anyone who can help is asked to be at the Old Car Garage on May 17th to help fill the "ditty" bags for the show. It was also announced at the Car Council meeting that there will be a sneak preview of the Pixar Cars movie on June 8th. This movie is an animated feature that covers the trials and tribulations of a NASCAR stock car racer who takes a cross country trip on Route 66. The site for the movie has not yet been established. Tickets will be $10.00 with the proceeds to be split evenly between the New Mexico Route 66 Association and the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs. Volunteers are needed to help CNM park cars at the Museum Show and also volunteers are needed to help count ballots. Incidentally, the Museum Car Show awards plaques were designed by our own Bill Reider. Heula Pittman announced that the Sunshine Committee has all of the decorations done and boxed, ready to go to Montrose for the Tri-State meet. They do need some help transporting the boxes to Montrose and Dave Huntoon has tentatively volunteered to take them in the yellow CNM Library Van. Bill Reider asked that those who have ordered shirts please pay for them tonight or at the next meeting at the latest. He plans to have the shirts at the next meeting. He also circulated sheets for members to sign up for the various duties needed at Montrose to make a successful Tri-State. Newsletter editor Jim Pittman asked that anything that needs to go into the newsletter be in his hands by the weekend before the Tri-State. Actually, as soon as possible after the Museum Car Show would be better as the Labor Day holiday is going to disrupt the newsletter schedule! Upcoming activities include the Old Route 66 cleanup on May 6th and breakfast at the Route 66 Diner on Central on May 20th at 08:30. We need suggestions as to where to go for breakfast in June. The Museum Car Show is on Sunday May 21st. CNM will meet in the lot on the South side of the Sheraton and go in together at 07:00-07:15. We need to go in as a group since we will be parking the cars that come in after us. We also will get a good spot to park. Ollie will bring the reflector vests that we use on our Old Route 66 cleanup for those who are parking cars to wear. The weekend of June 2nd-4th is the Tri-State meet. Probably some will arrange to convoy up. Probably some will go to Durango on Thursday, stay there overnight, and them continue to Montrose on Friday morning. There was some discussion about different ways to go to Montrose. One is to take Highway 550 north out of Durango to Silverton. This takes you over Coal Bank pass which is 10,640 feet, then drops down to Silverton. Stay with Highway 550 toward Ouray. This takes you over Red Mountain pass which is 11,018 feet. Once you drop down to Ouray it a pretty flat run into Montrose on Highway 550. The other way is a little further but the only pass is Gypsum Gap at 6,100 feet. Take Highway 160 West out of Durango to Cortez. Take Highway 666 from Cortez to Dove Creek. Just past Dove Creek take Highway 141 until you come to Highway 145. Take 145 to Placerville where you get Highway 62 into Ridgeway. Here you pick up Highway 550 into Montrose. Highway 141, 145, and 62 are Colorado state roads but all are paved and usually in good shape. (Your Secretary has been over all of then at one time or another.) June 11th will be the Isotope ball game. Robert Gold said that there were enough signed up to get the $7.50 ticket price and to get the CNM name on the scoreboard. Robert must have the money no later than next meeting so he can get the tickets. Our first econo-run in several years went well thanks to Dave Huntoon's organizing it. Those who drove the Turquoise Trail to Madrid had a good time. The best mileage was by Bill Reider. John Wiker went to the Manzano del Sol car show. There were 24 cars there and John said that his Corvair was the only American-made car there. However, everyone got to make their own ice cream sundae. There are a bunch of Corvairs in a storage or wrecking yard in Alamogordo that can be gotten very cheap. Those that are not gotten are to be scrapped. Does anyone know what has happened to Southwest Corvair Salvage? The meeting was adjourned at 19:38. The meeting was followed by a presentation by Bill Reider to show everyone how to get great mileage out of your Corvair. How many Corvair owners know about the many different distributor weights available? Or the many different carburetors? =CNM= SUNSHINE COMMITTEE Heula Pittman A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY wish goes to each of the following CNMers: Larry Hickerson June 9 Chuck Vertrees June 15 Sylvia Trujillo June 19 Jonothan Reider June 20 Rita Gongora June 24 Heula Pittman June 24 Robert Gold June 30 Five couples celebrate Wedding Anniversaries in June. Present were Ray Trujillo, Robert Gold, Jim and Heula Pittman, Wendell Walker, Dave Huntoon and Chuck Vertrees. John Wiker was excused to attend to a High School graduation. Ray said the Tri-State shirts are ready and some were passed out to those who were in attendance. Ray also confirmed that the Unser Museum tour is set for Saturday August 19th from 14:00 to 16:00. This date was chosen because the museum staff thought that Al Unser might be in town and be available to give us our tour. Ray also said that since he doesn't live far from the Unser Museum that we might plan a pot-luck Bar-B-Q at his place afterward. John had notified Ray that the breakfast is all set up for Saturday the 20th at Route 66 Diner at 08:30. Chuck mentioned that a friend of his from church, Dave Smith, asked him if there was anyone in the club who wanted a bunch of Corvair parts. He asked where and when we meet and said that he might turn up at our next meeting. Be sure that you lock your cars at the next meeting or you might find the back seat full of Corvair parts! Dave is not into Corvairs anymore but he is into Studebakers, and those Corvair parts have got to go. Wendell announced that CNM had $534.66 in the regular checking account and $2,660.37 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,195.03. He also said the our GMAC account is now paying 6% which is pretty darn good. It is better than you can get on any bank CDs that I know of. Wendell has the plaques for the Tri-State Boydston Award. The traveling plaque has only space for one more name. Wendell asked whether we really need a traveling plaque. The winner gets his/her own plaque and there is no real place that the traveling plaque could be displayed. If we owned our own private meeting place that would be one thing, but I do not see anytime in the future when we will have such a place, unless I win the lottery. Jim moved that we retire the traveling plaque when the last name is filled in. Heula had the items for the Tri-State tables all boxed in her car and these were transferred to Dave's van which will be going to Montrose. The Sunshine Committee ladies spent a lot of time on these decorations and preparations and should really be commended by the membership. Dave also has the CNM banner and frame and will bring them to the Museum Show along with some membership application forms, just in case. Robert said that the preparations for the Albuquerque Museum Car Show seem to be under control. With CNM being in charge of the parking we will be sure to get excellent spaces. Robert was going to the Car Council meeting after our meeting to help stuff the "goody" bags to give out to the registrants. Jim said that Richard Finch sent e-mail that he had been looking forward to bringing his Ultravan to the Albuquerque Museum car show but will not be able to come because his wife, Gayle, was having some trouble with her eyes and they had trips to their El Paso eye doctor to make. Jim also said that anything that was expected to be in the newsletter would have to be in his hands no later than Sunday afternoon, the 21st. There was also discussion of the availability of the newsletter. It is on Jim's website and there is a link to it on CNM's official website. The newsletter there is in color as a PDF file. Robert said he didn't need his to be mailed as he could download it. We need to find out how many other members would just as soon download their newsletter instead of getting it as a hard copy (in black & white) in the mail. We know that a lot of the CNM members do not have a computer or internet access. Another consideration is the cost for printing a certain number of copies. This needs further discussion. Upcoming events include the Museum Show this coming Sunday the 21st. Then in June there is the Tri-State meet in Montrose, the 30th Anniversary Tri-State Event. After our regular June meeting, Hurley Wilvert will do a presentation on his motorcycle racing experiences. At this, Dave remarked that no one in the club had any idea that Hurley was an accomplished motorcycle racer with a great reputation. Dave said that other members had interesting experiences and accomplishments and we should get each member to provide a short history or biography for the club so we'd know more about our members. I know that there are a lot of members in CNM who have other interests than old cars and none of the members know about them. I for instance have done a lot of shooting in the past and have hand-loaded most of the ammunition. Heula remarked that, starting several years ago with Tom Martin, we have had a series of articles with the title "La Ventana" about ourl members. Maybe we can revive these articles? If CNM members would like to give a little biography to Heula, she could keep track of them and get them in the newsletter. Another activity in June is the Isotopes ball game on the 11th. Robert had tickets, but Ray pointed out the location of the seats, and Robert said he'd have to exchange the tickets for better seats. So stay tuned. The second Route 66 cleanup was on May 6th. Only three CNM members turned out! The Route 66 cleanup is a project that CNM committed to several years ago. We have a mile of Old 66 that has a sign that indicated that CNM is keeping this mile clean. In the past it was normal to have eight or ten members turn out. My wife went with me for several years. Neither of us can contribute any longer but I think that CNM could do better that three members. There are two more cleanups this year! Ollie Scheflow has been in charge of this since the beginning. Let's not let him down. Bill Reider did an excellent job of telling the membership how to tune their Corvair. Will someone give him a run for his money at the next Econo-run? Well our club had a great turnout for the 22nd Annual Automobile Show hosted by the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs. It was held at the Albuquerque Museum in Old Town on May 21st and hundreds of beautiful cars were on display. The weather was perfect for getting out and enjoying many of the great classics from the various car clubs. Larry Hickerson's spectacular Rampside was positioned prominently at the main entrance, and deservedly so. As most of you know, Larry's vehicle is simply outstanding! Much to my surprise Larry's Rampside placed second in the Corvair class, but believe me he clearly had the best Corvair out there. I was also completely surprised when my 1965 Corvair Corsa convertible was picked for a third place award. My favorites are always the Corvairs and I'm glad CNM made a nice showing of our unique vehicles. Thanks to all CNM members that brought their cars to the show. Also thanks to Robert Gold for being our Car Council representative and putting CNM in a great position to be one of the main featured car clubs. Great job Robert! As nice as the Museum Car Show experience was, many of us are now looking forward to hosting and participating in the 30th Anniversary of the Tri-State Meet in the scenic Colorado Mountain town of Montrose. The meet is scheduled for June 2nd-4th and personally I'm really excited to go because I've never been to a Tri-State Meet and never driven my Corvair outside a 100 mile radius from home. Hopefully I'll make it there with little or no problem. Anyway, I'll update you on how it went in next month's article. Upon returning from Montrose, don't forget our club is going to an Isotopes baseball game on Sunday June 12th at 6:00pm. If you signed up and paid for your tickets, Robert Gold will distribute them at the next club meeting. Also, immediately following our next membership meeting Hurley Wilvert will do a presentation on his motorcycle racing experiences. So please plan on attending because Hurley's talk will be very interesting. Thanks to Bill Reider for the excellent tech session on distributors and on how to fine tune your Corvair. Well, I guess that's enough said for now, so hopefully I'll see you at the next club meeting. - Ray Trujillo =CNM= ALBUQUERQUE MUSEUM SHOW Robert Gold This year's Car Council Museum Car Show was a very important one for me. CNM had volunteered this year to take a lead role in organizing the show. As your council rep I felt that I was the one who would be blamed if things didn't work out. I shouldn't have worried. My fellow CNM'ers did a wonderful job supporting the show. They began by having 6 of the 12 participants in the show mailing party. When the show itself came around the troops turned out in force to help park cars. All I can say is THANK YOU-- you've done the Corvair nation proud. So enough about me- it's time to describe this year's car show. Weather-wise the day was perfect. Since we're in the midst of a drought we didn't have to worry about rain. We also had a nice breeze to help cool us off until the temperature got a little out of hand in the afternoon. Thanks to Sally, Geoff, and Cary we had a nice shady spot to hang out. The general turnout was excellent. I was wondering if the doubling of the entry fee to $10.00 would keep people away. It was immediately obvious that a mere $10 wouldn't stop people from showing off their special cars to other car nuts. There were cars for everyone's taste, but since this is an article for the Corvair club I'll concentrate on Corvairs. The club members brought 10 BEAUTIFUL cars. Here's a listing of the entries: 1961 Sedan (the one, the only Atomic Car!) -- Cary Hubbard 1961 Lakewood (it's Eoyre) -- Anne Mae Gold 1961 Rampside (the Big Apple) -- Robert Gold 1963 Monza convertible (the Cardinal) -- Geoff Johnson, Sally Williams 1966 Corsa V8 (the powerful Coronado) -- Geoff Johnson 1966 Monza (with a new paint job!) -- John Wiker 1965 Corsa convertible (thanks for the hot dogs!) -- Ray Trujillo 1963 Spyder convertible (albeit with 110 power) -- Bernie Urbassik 1965 Monza 4-door (the Rummy) -- Art and Kelly Gold 1963 Rampside (the star of the show) -- Larry Hickerson 1961 Corvan (so beautiful it glows) -- Dave Huntoon 1929 DeSoto (a DeSoto? -- it was stunning!) -- Leroy Rogers Plus three unaffiliated 'Vairs -- This Corvair thing must be catching on! So again I want to thank the club members for their help. If you didn't attend this year's event you missed a fun time. Plan to join us next year! -- Robert Gold =CNM= MARK DOMZALSKI'S DEVIL RATS Richard Finch I have told most of the CNM members several times, that Gayle and I have this wild plan to be driving only Corvair vehicles for the last 10 to 15 years of our lives. That would mean that we expect to live to about 80 to 85 years old. In most cases of longevity, that age would mean that we would also be maintaining our Corvairs when we are up into our 80's. Very few people are still pulling engines, transmissions and differentials when they are that old! So, I ran an ad in the CNM newsletter a couple of years ago that read: "Wanted, a rebuildable 110 hp or 140 hp Corvair engine." And Mark Domzalski, being the good guy that we all know he is, called me a couple of days after the ad came out and told me that he had this low mileage 140 hp engine, Powerglide trans and differential in a 1965 Monza coupe that was available if I wanted it. But I would have to help him remove it from the car. So, I asked how much? Mark made me an offer that was almost too good. So, I said I would drive up and help remove it, minus carburetors and accessories, and take it home on a small trailer, pulled behind our 1996 Olds 4 door. That event just happened to coincide with the annual CNM anniversary banquet. I had just purchased a Garmin IQUE3600 GPS with palm pilot and decided to use it to guide us from our home in Tularosa, NM to Mark and Elizabeth's house in Placitas, NM. That was really a neat way to travel until we got near the Sun Port Airport and were diverted by an accident on the I-25 freeway. The traffic officers put us on a parallel side road and we were able to drive slowly toward Mark's, but not without the GPS yelling at us at every intersection. It would say, "Off course, recalculating, turn right at the next corner" and of course we could not turn right because of the accident. We finally turned the GPS off at the Central Avenue cross street, because we felt sorry for its synthesized little voice that seemed to become more and more impatient with us at each street corner. But we did ask it to recalculate once we were allowed to get back onto I-25 headed north. Amazingly, it took us right to the turn at Mark's driveway. And of course we called Mark several times after the accident to appraise him of our slow progress in getting there to help remove the engine and transaxle. When we finally got there, Mark had pulled almost all of the connections that held the powertrain in the car. All that was left for me to do was to crawl under and take the axle shafts loose and remove the shift cable and the front engine mounts. Mark had already done most of the rest of the work while we were held up by the accident. But, that working underneath the car showed me that Mark had some of the meanest rats in the whole state of New Mexico. They had built a very elaborate living arrangement on the top of the differential, using native cactus spines as a nest! While I was working underneath, cactus spines would fall on my face and immediately stick to my skin. But the really baaaad ones would fall onto my shirt and immediately work their way through my shirt and into my skin! Mark later told me that the rats had taken over the car because it was left sitting in a field near the house. The rats were not taking over cars that were parked near the house. How the rats were not stuck with cactus spines while living on the differential was hard to understand. And those very efficient rats had even separated the living quarters from their toilet facilities, which obviously was the engine itself. After we pulled the engine and transaxle, we discovered that the deal was even better for me than first expected. The powerglide tannny had a new Clark's Corvair finned aluminum oil pan on it that retailed for about $140. And the engine had a machined aluminum fan hub that retailed at around $35. All 140 hp powerglide transmissions have a special governor that allows shifts at higher engine rpms than stock, so that it works better in Ultra Vans for crisper shifts and better hill climbing. And oh yes, Mark let me take a shower in his house to wash off many of the cactus spines after the engine was out. Later that day, we checked into the Best Western and cleaned up again so that we could attend the annual CNM dinner near the Sandia Tram. And no, Mark, you can't have the engine back! It is going into our Ultra Van sometime this summer or fall, as will the special powerglide and differential. Now if the diff just had Positraction gears! -- richard finch =CNM= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - June 1999 - Volume 25 - Number 6 - Issue 285 Our cover featured a scene from an earlier Albuquerque Museum Car Show. We met at Casa Chevrolet and "guest president" Domzalski ran our meeting since President Pleau was out of town. Treasurer Walker said we had $6268 to spend or invest. Many events had to be planned for during May: the Museum show, the fall swap meet, an All-Clubs picnic, The Great American Race, several other car shows, a group order for Clark's catalogs, and the place and time for the Christmas party. Several photos (made with Wendy's digital camera) from the Museum car show appeared in the newsletter. Ollie reported on a successful Route 66 clean-up on May Day. A tech tip said a good tachometer for Corvairs was manufactured by VDO. Finally, Sethracer (Seth Emerson) told Dennis by e-mail about the death of Bill Fisher, author of the first HP book, "How to Hotrod Corvair Engines." Fourteen Years Ago - June 1992 - Volume 18 - Number 6 - Issue 201 For some reason our cover showed a 1939 Ford. President (and Corvair owner) Steve ran the meeting. Wendell counted up 966 dollars. CNM was sponsoring Michael Salis of Sedillo in the Great American Race: a '35 Chevrolet. We thanked Dennis & Debbie for a great rally, much of it through the streets of Rio Rancho. Clayborne asked for volunteers to help at the Las Vegas Tri-State. Steve reported on the Museum car show: a great collection of cars. Larry's Spyder "BUGEATR" took second place in Class E. Mark Morgan's Billiken tried without success to get New Mexican food at his local deli back east. Tech tips abounded this month. Do you know what a "Vega Plate" is? Roger Long (SDCC) told us. He also mentioned we should keep an eye out for vacuum leaks. Do you want a list of stuff to put in your Corvair "just in case" while out on the holiday road? Lew Rishel (SDCC) told us. Want to know a great way to clean oily parts? Jim Brossard (VAIR-IETY) suggested good ol' TIDE detergent and hot water. Do you want a quick list to things to do to your Corvair to go fast safely and still get better gas mileage? Ron from Central New York told us. (Higher tire pressures, good alignment, proper choke adjustment, front spoilers on '65s and earlier, a good tune-up, and finally, drive so as to keep off those brakes. Think about it.) How to clean those dirty door hinges? Orville Eliason (CORVAIR ASSISTANCE) told us. Twenty-one Years Ago - June - 1985 - Volume 11 - Number 6 - Issue 117 The June 1985 cover featured a disassembled 1965 convertible. Our VP Clayborne ran the meeting. Sylvan counted up 487 bucks. We were doing a group purchase of halon fire extinguishers (I still have mine; wonder if they are still good?) Sylvan reported on new members Greg Mewhinney, Kristin Boyd and Merton Grigsby. Bill McClellan's Gas Welding - Part 2 was our technical feature this month. Some of us drove up to Jemez Springs to visit Fred and Brenda Edeskuty and admire their house and wonderful garage. A note from San Francisco complained that while used motor oil was considered a hazardous substance, it was not easy to find a safe way to dispose of it. Bill Reider reported on a new AC electric fuel pump, part number EP-42, just right for Corvairs. Twenty-eight Years Ago - June 1978 - Volume 4 - Number 5 - Issue 33 The June 1978 issue's cover featured a 1965 Corsa turbo. We had 21 people at the May meeting. The Car Council planned a swap meet in October. New members were Leo Shaw, Clay Keen and Robert Lucas. One of our fondly remembered tech articles was in this issue: "I Can Fix Anything (Almost!)" by Ike Meissner in which he explained how he found a special use for a hex wrench. This month we had an article on the joys of taking the bus to work. Your editor, at least, must have been converted, because he's still doing it now. We borrowed several tech tips from other CORSA publications: Larry Claypool told about clutch job shortcuts and Will Smith told about diagnosing battery problems. John North warned about the distress you may be in for if you mix-and-match early and late flywheels, pressure plates and clutch discs. =CNM= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | June | July | August | | | | | | : : : : 1 2 3 | : : : : : : 1 | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | | 25 26 27 28 29 30 : | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 30 31 : : | | : : : : : : : | 30 31 : : : : : | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Thu 1 Jun ....... Those participating were: Dave Huntoon, Ollie Scheflow and Mike Stickler. We had good weather and minimum spring winds. Fortunately the trash load was light and we finished by 10:50. Thanks to Mike and Dave. We hope to see a better turn out on August 5th. =CNM= ========================= REMINDER -- CNM OUTING TO ISOTOPES PARK Robert Gold I recently told you about the planned CNM outing to Isotopes park to see our Albuquerque Isotopes battle the Memphis Redbirds on Sunday, June 11. I'll be getting your tickets to you soon. Remember this will be your chance to be treated like the special person you are, socialize with fellow CNM members and save money at the same time! See you at the June club meeting. -- Robert Gold TRI-STATE PREVIEW LeRoy Rogers THE HOST MOTEL FOR THE TRI-STATE IN Montrose has changed its name! This should have no impact on our planning, but you should know. We recently received the following e-mail: From: "Amy Larsen" ( abvimontrose @ hotmail.com ) To: 004873 @ comcast.net Subject: Tri State Meet Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2006 22:23:54 +0000 Hello Leroy! I just wanted to let you know that we have "branded" our hotel, so the name has changed to Americas Best Value Inn (from USA Inns). Our phone number has stayed the same, and of course your reservations and group booking for the Tri State Meet are still scheduled. In fact, I think we have booked every room instead of the 50 rooms you first thought you needed. Just thought I'd make you aware of the change. We look forward to seeing you on May 31st and the rest of the group when they arrive. Take care and warmest wishes, Amy Larsen General Manager Americas Best Value Inn Montrose, Colorado (970) 249-4507 OUR PLANNING FOR THE TRI-STATE IS ON track. If you still haven't made reservations, maybe you still can, via the Internet. Point your web browser to: http://www.usainnsofamerica.com and follow the directions to register. Our room rates will be $50 per night. The rates go up in May, but we Tri-State people will get this rate, provided we register by ten (10) days before the event. So, when you register, ignore the posted rates. When you register, be sure to fill in the "Business Affiliation" blank with "Tri-State" so they will know you are with us. There are T-shirts, sweat shirts and golf shirts with the 2006 Tri-State logo for sale. Prices are $10 for T-shirts, $15 for sweat shirts and $16 for golf shirts. The deadline for buying shirts was April 15. The Show-n-Shine at Montrose on Saturday will be in the street in front of City Hall and the street will be roped off for us. We have been informed that a local car club is planning a swap meet for this same Saturday. We don't know if the swap meet was planned all along or was organized because they heard a group of car nuts would be in town. There will be a model car display and awards for the best model cars. If you have model cars, plan to bring them! The banquet will be at the Elks' Lodge Saturday evening. The Sunshine Committee is preparing table decorations - they don't need any more tissue boxes. We need more items for door prizes and items for the goody bags. We are looking for a suitable item of some value to raffle. There will be dash plaques for everybody participating. -- LeRoy =CNM= =end=
