All officers were present. There were 21 members in attendance. There were no guests or new members to introduce. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $1,210.35 in the checking account and $2,660.37 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,870.72. The Car Council representative announced that there would be a cruise tomorrow night (the 8th) from the Highland Theater to the Kimo Theater in the evening. There are five CNM members planning to participate at this time. Sunshine Committee member Heula Pittman announced that they cleared $30.00 on the Jelly Bean count at the Tri-State. There was one cookbook sold. The silent auction cleared $19.00 and their treasury now has a $52.00 balance. Thanks to those who made donations for the Tri-Sate meet. There were too many to mention, but you are all to be thanked. Those who have not gotten their Tri-State shirts, please see Bill Reider after the meeting. He also has the CORSA Membership Rosters for those who want them. Jim Pittman asked that the information for the June newsletter be gotten in as soon as possible, no later than the Friday after the board meeting. This would be May 25th. Upcoming events start with the Isotopes Ball Game on the 11th. Robert has already distributed the tickets. Next Tuesday, the 13th, the N. M. Department of Transportation has asked for help to clean up NM 47 from Rio Bravo to NM 6 in Los Lunas. This is terribly short notice and we have just done our section of old Route 66. I doubt that any CNM members can participate on a working day. June 24th is the CNM breakfast. This time it will be at Jimmy's on Jefferson -- it is at 7007 Jefferson St NE. July 4th is the annual car show on the plaza in Santa Fe. It usually starts early enough that CNM members have to leave pretty early to get there on time. We need to check with Tarmo to find out when we should arrive. A guess: 7:00 AM. July 22nd is the Saturday breakfast and it will be at Milly's on Jefferson -- it is at 7308 Jefferson St NE and we have been there before. August will have the Unser Museum tour on the 18th. The tour will be from 14:00 to 16:00 and hopefully Al Unser will be available to be our tour guide. Immediately after the tour there will be a potluck Bar-B-Que at Ray Trujillo's house. More details will be in a later newsletter. The Old Town Museum show went well. CNM had twelve vehicles entered. The first place Corvair belonged to a member of the Road Runners Club who had 25 cars present. How come he is not a member of CNM? In the Corvair class, Larry Hickerson took second place and Ray Trujillo got third. The Tri-State was a complete success. LeRoy Rogers was the recipient of the Francis Boydston Award. Congratulations to LeRoy. CNM also won the trophy for the most members in attendance. There were 93 adults and 6 children at the banquet. CNM made some money and everyone that I talked to seemed to have had a good time. Ray Trujillo did the M.C. duties and should receive some thanks. There was a lot of cooperation from the CNM members. Next year the Tri-State will be sponsored by the Pikes Peak Club and is planned for Monte Vista, Colorado on May 18-20th 2007. The meeting was adjourned at 19:46 and was followed by a presentation by Hurley Wilvert about his motorcycle racing days. - Chuck =CNM= JUNE BOARD NOTES Chuck Vertrees Our meeting was called to order at 16:59 on June 21st at Business Printing Service. Present were Ray Trujillo, Dave Huntoon, Robert Gold, John Wiker, Heula and Jim Pittman, and Chuck Vertrees. Treasurer Wendell Walker was in California. President Trujillo has the Tri-State attendance trophy and will have CNM's name engraved in the appropriate spot. We do not have an appropriate location to display the trophy, so Ray will probably bring it to meetings. John Wiker reminded us that Saturday June 24th is the monthly breakfast at Jimmy's Restaurant at 7007 Jefferson NW. The time is 08:30. Your secretary had nothing to report but he had the treasurer's report from Wendell. CNM has $485.44 in the regular checking account and $2,449.16 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $2,934.60. Heula had nothing to report on the Sunshine Committee. They have not had to send any flowers or food for some time. We thank the committee for all their work in preparation for the Tri-State event. Dave had nothing to report on membership. Robert Gold reported that he thought that the club participation in the Isotopes Ball Game went well. There were 25 people in our group and the seats were very good. Right on the base line. He expressed interest in doing it again next year. Robert attended the Saturday night get-together at the Krispy Kream shop on Juan Tabo. It was very casual and there was not much happening, but there was a nice assortment of cars. The next Car Council meeting is Wednesday June 28th and he will be in town to attend. One thing that he mentioned was that many of the car clubs at the Museum Show voted in block. The only cars on the ballot would be for the cars belonging to that club, so that the biggest club got all the trophies. I don't know how that can be treated. Jim Pittman said that he wasn't signed up for any job at the Tri-State and feels guilty because he just enjoyed himself without having to work. This led to a discussion of how much work LeRoy Rogers and Bill Reider put out in setting up the Tri-State. They did not get the help they needed at Montrose. Possibly this was because many of our new members did not know exactly what would be needed. It was suggested that in the future, the jobs that need to be filled should be explained to the membership, and people should be signed up for a specific job at a specific time. Allowance should be made if a CNM member is going to show a car so that they can be signed up for a job that does not conflict with their car show preparations. John Wiker said that he was disappointed with the local turnout for the car display in Montrose. Apparently there was no advanced notice of the fact that we were going to be there. In fact, there was a local car show at the same time. I am told that the local Chamber of Commerce could care less about the Tri-State being in town! John said that the next time it is our turn that we should get the local paper to carry a story at least a week before we will be there and possibly get a little notice every day for the week before. We should appoint someone to be the P.R. person. The Fourth of July car show will be on the Plaza in Santa Fe starting early, perhaps at 7:00 AM. We need to get details from Tarmo or Wendell. Saturday August 5th is our next cleanup on "Old Route 66" at 08:00 AM. We need a better turnout than last time. The members who don't know about this need to be reminded. CNM has taken on the cleanup of one mile of "Old Route 66" a mile east of Central and Tramway. We have been doing this for a number of years and there are signs on the highway saying that this section is maintained by Corvairs of New Mexico. If a reasonable number turn out it only takes one or two hours. August 6th is the Car Council All Clubs annual picnic. Robert does not have details yet, but he will find out at the next Car Council meeting on June 28th and report back to us. August 19th is the Unser Museum tour from 14:00 to 16:00 or 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. After the tour we are invited to a Bar-B-Que picnic at Ray and Sylvia's house. This will be a pot luck so plan to bring a dish. Thanks to Hurley Wilvert for his presentation at the last regular meeting about his history of motorcycle racing all over the world. I bet there are other CNM members who have had interesting times in their lives that the club does not know about. There were a number of CNM members who gathered at the Highland Theater to convoy to the Kimo for the world premier of the movie "Cars" and an interesting experience it was for them! The meeting was adjourned at 17:57. Any member is invited to attend any board meeting. They are always interesting. -- Chuck Vertrees =CNM= Ten CNMers celebrate birthdays in July: Debra Anderson July 6 Nancy Urbassik July 6 Mark Domzalski July 8 Tarmo Sutt July 8 Emily Gongora July 9 Larry Blair July 15 Leslie Sullivan July 18 Gayle Finch July 27 Richard Finch July 29 Kay Sutt July 31 Happy Birthday wishes go to each of you! =CNM= MECHANICALLY UN-INCLINED Ray Trujillo Hello Everyone! I hope your summer is off to a good start. My schedule has been quite hectic since the Museum Car show. Just a few days after the car show my family and I went on a week long vacation to Seattle, Washington. When we left Albuquerque, the temperatures were already in the low 90's and as you are well aware, no relative moisture to speak of. When we arrived in Seattle the temperatures were in the low 70's and the air was crisp and refreshing. The weather was a welcomed change for my boys and me. On the other hand, my wife Sylvia would much rather be in the hot and dry heat of New Mexico. She's a little strange that way. It rained four out of the seven days we were there but it didn't stop us from enjoying the many sights and activities we had planned. We explored Seattle for three days, visited an old friend in Tacoma, spent a few wonderful days with a business associate near Olympia, and then went on to spend a few days on the west coast beaches of Washington. Overall, we had a very nice vacation. Upon returning from vacation, we had one day to enjoy at home before we would leave for the 30th Anniversary of the Tri-State meet in Montrose. Dave Huntoon, John Wiker and I decided to caravan up to Montrose on the morning of June 2nd. Since both John and I were rookies at driving our Corvairs on long trips we felt better going in a group just in case of car trouble. We began our caravan in Bernalillo and a few hours later we stopped in Bloomfield to gas up. While in Bloomfield Dave said when he got to Durango he was going to stop for few hours to visit some friends and since our cars were doing great he encouraged us to continue the trip without him. When we all got to Durango John and I stopped for lunch and then the plan was to continue north through US 550. Dave would go and visit friends and then proceed through the Cortez route in his Corvan and we would all meet up later in Montrose. John and I had a light lunch because I think we were both anxious to continue the trip. To me, it felt like two young birds being pushed out of the nest for the first time. You know the feeling, excited and scared at the same time. Well, about a quarter mile down the road from where we had lunch my car started to hesitate and lunge and it just finally died in the median on MAIN STREET Durango, USA. As John pulled over, I popped the hood and prayed to find an obvious problem. I didn't see one, so John and I began to try and diagnose the problem and both of us thought it might be vapor lock. So now we're letting the car cool down when all of sudden we both see mama bird Dave come driving by to save his two young birds. Dave asked me what happened and after hearing the symptoms he said it sounded like a classic case of vapor lock, so we felt like we had the situation under control. Dave then got out his tool bag and began to loosen up one of the fuel lines to help relieve the problem and that's when he found the fuel pump was not working. I told him I had an extra fuel pump with me so Dave replaced the pump and sure enough the car started and we were back in business. Needless to say, John and I decided it was in our best interest to stay close to mama... err Dave and follow him on the Cortez route to Montrose. Anyway, that was the only problem we had and it earned me the Hard Luck award at the Tri-State banquet. It really wasn't that bad of a break and I looked at it as a good learning experience. I've always heard if you have a Corvair that you should carry an extra fuel pump and fan belt with you, so I felt good about being somewhat prepared. Thanks to my traveling partners, Dave and John for helping me out and getting me to Montrose safely. As I mentioned in last month's article, I hadn't been to a Tri-State meet before. Well, I've got to say that it really was a great event and I had the chance to meet a lot of really nice people from the other car clubs, and was able to admire some of the best looking Corvairs around. We had a nice car show and a wonderful banquet. At the dinner, we had awards for the car show winners, a couple of raffles, a silent auction, a ton of door prizes, and of course the presentation of the Francis Boydston Award. Congratulations to LeRoy Rogers on being named the Boydston Award winner! Also CNM received the Traveling Trophy Award for having the most members in attendance. You know, hosting the Tri-State meet, even though it's a fairly casual event, really takes a commitment by a club to make sure it's a success. On that note, I'd really like to thank LeRoy Rogers and Bill Reider for their tremendous effort in organizing the Tri-State meet. They took care of many things like visiting the Montrose Chamber of Commerce several times, finding a host hotel, getting a hall and a caterer for the dinner, taking and ordering T-shirts, registering guests and I'm sure a lot of other tasks I haven't mentioned. So next time you see either of these guys, thank them for all their work. Also special thanks to the following members for their contributions; the Sunshine Committee for making cool centerpieces for the dinner, having a jellybean raffle, decorating the hall, John Wiker on organizing and running the silent auction, Jim Pittman for presenting the Boydston Award with an insightful history of the award, Wendell Walker for keeping the money situation straight. Thank you to everyone who volunteered his or her time to one task or another. And last but not least, a big thanks to all those who donated items for prizes. The gifts were greatly appreciated by everyone. Great job CNM! Shortly after returning from Montrose, we had our monthly membership meeting followed by an excellent presentation by Hurley Wilvert on his motorcycle racing experiences. For those of you who weren't there, Hurley brought in one of his bikes and some samples of the many press write-ups he's had throughout his career. Hurley also talked about some of the more memorable races he's been involved in and it was quite entertaining. Thanks Hurley for sharing your exciting adventures with us. The very next day, five of us from CNM were lucky enough to participate in a world premier showing of the Disney/Pixar movie "Cars". What a great time! Sixty-six classic cars from the various clubs got to motorcade down Central Avenue from Highland Theater to the historic Kimo Theater. We all got tickets to see the movie and our cars were specially parked in front of the theater. The five who participated from our club were Geoff Johnson, John Wiker, Cary Hubbard, Larry Hickerson and yours truly. Oh, by the way, if you haven't seen the movie yet, it's definitely worth seeing. On Sunday June 11th, many of us from CNM went to see an Isotopes baseball game and everyone had a good time. It was a low scoring game, as the Isotopes lost 2-1 in a good pitchers duel. I knew our Isotopes were in trouble when they came out in pink game jerseys. The pink game jerseys were for the Breast Cancer Awareness event. They had a silent auction for the jerseys and a good amount was made for a great cause. It was a nice evening and thank you to Robert Gold for organizing the event. Well, I guess that's enough said for now, so hopefully I'll see you at the next club meeting. -- Ray Trujillo =CNM= THANKS "SUNSHINERS"! Heula Pittman -- Chair A couple of times during the Tri-State banquet on Saturday evening, I overheard positive comments concerning our table decorations. I heard, "You know what, we could do something like this next year when we host the Tri-State." and, "This is really pretty. We could get together and make something. This adds a certain element of interest!" Maybe we have started something! All seven of us collected items, watched for sales on items we needed, worked collectively four or five times and individually many times. Actually, I heard no gripes or complaints. Even though it was lots of work, it was fun. Thanks to all six of you guys: * Elizabeth Domzalski * Kim Patten * Brenda Stickler * Wendell Walker * Anne Mae Gold * Ruth Boydston for all your contributions of ideas, time and energy. It was fun putting all the pieces together. We really appreciate Dave, Bill and Brenda for transporting various items to Montrose! I believe this was a successful and sincerely appreciated effort on our part. By the way, our Jelly Bean jar cleared $30 for the Club's treasury. And our own Pat Hall won it. He told me that he didn't plan to open the jar ever because it was his souvenir from his first Tri-State! How about that?! Congratulations, Pat! =CNM= Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2006 11:53:46 -0600 From: Bill Reider ( breider @ gte.net ) To: Jim Pittman ( casa @ unm.edu ) Subject: Tri-State Awards Jim, Here is a list of the awards, etc. I'll have the Registration forms at the meeting for you. -- Bill Early Closed: #09 1963 Monza Coupe Jean Olwine RMC Early Open: #08 1963 Spyder Convt David Olwine RMC Late Closed: #31 1966 Monza Coupe Wayne Broadhead BCC Late Open: #29 1965 Corsa Convt Don Young BCC Forward Control: #03 1963 Rampside Larry Hickerson CNM Best of Show: #03 1963 Rampside Larry Hickerson CNM Long Distance: Vee Stowell coming 761 miles in a 1963 Monza Convt. Fortunately he happened to have a spare fuel pump with him and Dave was there to help. There were no other significant problems reported from any of the participants. However, on the return trip Robert Gold's 1966 Corsa suddenly lost its speedometer - he thought the cable had broken. But upon investigation, Robert found that the outer wheel bearing had overheated and got so hot that it melted the the plastic hub insert that drives the speedometer cable! Luckily, the wheel bearing did not fail. A new bearing (with plenty of grease) and a new hub cap with plastic insert and the Corsa convertible is back in business. The following is the number of people attending from each of the clubs. Bonneville Corvair Club 12 RMC 28 Pikes Peak 29 CNM 37 Total 106 Corvairs of New Mexico took home the traveling trophy for the largest attendance, much to our surprise, because several members who usually attend Tri-State events were unable to go this year. As always, it was a pleasure to see so many really nice cars at the car show in downtown Montrose. We thank all those who brought their Corvairs to this year's Tri-State and we hope to see even more when the Pikes Peak club hosts next year's event in Monte Vista, Colorado. =CNM= COLORADO THROUGH LOUISIANA EYES Mary Jo Jeans Home for us is the very flat South Louisiana so our road trip from Albuquerque to Montrose was full of elevated eye candy. Our first stop was charming Durango. One night wasn't nearly long enough to get to know her. I've added Durango to my short list of next vacation spots so I can do more than shop and eat next time we meet. The next day we stopped in Silverton to have some delicious chicken fried steak and live piano music at the Bent Elbow for lunch. It was a good choice since it was walking distance to the noisy little river out back by the train tracks. What a thrill it was to have sweating palms on the mountain road as Dad carefully negotiated each corner. Mom and Dad want us to experience everything... so we got to skip the car show on Saturday morning (we've seen them before) and go to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison for a walk along the crystal clear river. Fly fishermen were sight fishing for trout without success but watching was like looking at the nature channel on T.V. but better! There was lots of socializing at the motel that filled up our down time between sight seeing. The Tri State may be about cars and club events to most. To us it was bonding with our family and getting to know their friends while we saw new places. Thank you all for making us feel welcome. On the way back we stopped near a summit, surrounded by mountain peaks. I walked toward the trees growing up the mountainside and stood for several minutes listening to the near silence. I wanted to photograph the scene into my memory so as to keep it forever. Back in flat Louisiana I'll be able to have a little bit of Colorado in my mind whenever I need it. -- Mary Jo & Jordan Jeans (Belonging to Jim & Heula Pittman of CNM) =CNM= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | July | August | September | | | | | | : : : : : : 1 | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | : : : : : 1 2 | | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 | | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 | | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 30 31 : : | 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 | | 30 31 : : : : : | : : : : : : : | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Tue 4 Jul early! That's probably because of my roots in St. Louis -- a truly rabid baseball town. Most folks would think that means that I'm also a nut for all the statistics that are associated with the sport. Stats like hits, runs, errors, how a batter hits on sunny days in April and so on. This is not the case. My job as a hydrologist gives me all the exposure to statistics that I need. The way I look at baseball is in terms of the aesthetics -- the look and feel of the game and where it is played. Looking at things that way I want to say that the CNM outing to Isotopes Park on a beautiful Sunday evening was quite a treat. We had about 25 club members and friends gather in seats down the third base line to watch the Isotopes battle the Memphis Redbirds. The crowd was much bigger than what you would expect on a Sunday night, but that just added to the excitement. What we got to watch was one of those games baseball lovers dream of -- a well pitched and played game that came down to the very last inning. The 'Topes had dominated the Redbirds in two of the three previous games, but this time the 'birds had a pitcher who had already won two games in the majors this year. His name is Anthony Reyes and he pitched a complete game and managed to preserve a 1 run lead for the win for Memphis. When the ballpark here was the old Sports Stadium we would have been able to watch the game from our cars and this would have been truly a car event. In spite of this it was a pleasant gathering of friends who had interest in both cars and baseball. Most everyone who attended had grins on their faces by the end of the game. There is nothing like a day at the "ball yard" to negate whatever cares you might have. I want to thank the club for making this event such a success. I guess the only down side for me was that I missed it when our club name was displayed on the scoreboard. However, I'll make sure I see it when we do this again next year. Let's all plan to be there. -- Robert Gold =CNM= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - July 1999 - Volume 25 - Number 7 - Issue 286 A digital photo (thanks, Wendy) showed the winning vehicles and their owners at the Salida, Colorado Tri-State meet. Billiken recalled that the Corvair was still going strong, 30 years after it went out of production. Dennis ran our meeting at Casa Chevrolet. We welcomed new member Bruce Carlin. Our virtual piggy bank held $6,215.37. Bill said the Museum car show was a big success with 488 vehicles. An "All Clubs" picnic was planned for the Elk's Club campground on South 14. Some of us planned to watch as the Great American Race passed through town. Robert was already working on the State Fair car show. Hurley agreed to serve as vice-president since Paul Campbell had left us to move to Oklahoma. Dennis reported that at Salida the officers of CNM, Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain agreed that CNM should go out of turn to host the 2000 Tri-State in Albuquerque in conjunction with the Albuquerque Museum's recognition of the Corvair's 40th anniversary. An article from the Denver club's newsletter reported on the Salida Tri-State, with several nice photos - thanks, Wendy. A tech-non-tip by Sylvan asked what kind of block he had, given its peculiar characteristics which he hadn't seen before. Finally, an article by CORSA officer Bryan Blackwell claimed to tell us what a typical day working for CORSA was like. And lastly, we remembered former member and owner of multiple nice Corvairs, Doug Morgan, who recently passed away. Fourteen Years Ago - July 1992 - Volume 18 - Number 7 - Issue 202 This issue was devoted to our Tri-State Meet in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The cover photo depicted the hotel headquarters, "Montezuma's Castle" and a passel of Corvairs. President Steve ran the meeting and Chuck took notes. Guests were Oliver Scheflow and Brian Major. Wendell reported $941 in the bank. Del was prepared to sell patches, name tags and front license plates. LeRoy previewed the Great American Race, soon to pass through our city and state. An end of an era: this was our last meeting at Ed Black's Chevrolet! Milton told us what he knew about the sale of Ed Black's to Casa Chevrolet. We had a successful Museum car show with 430 cars. There were soon to be new Clark's catalogs. Tarmo briefed us on the Fourth of July Santa Fe breakfast, car show and general fiesta on the plaza. LeRoy went over the upcoming State Fair car show. Larry previewed a trip to Tinkertown, Madrid and Bella Vista. Mark Martinek previewed our trip to Ojo Caliente. Yes, we were having a busy summer! Dennis provided a detailed report on the Las Vegas Tri-State. Our official photographer, LeRoy, provided many photos. Wayne traveled the farthest to get to the Tri-State: 1200 miles from Iowa. We also had participants from San Diego, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida. I remember Sylvan's great econo-run and a visit to Fort Union, way out on the treeless plains. Twenty-one Years Ago - July 1985 - Volume 11 - Number 7 - Issue 118 The July 1985 cover was a sharp drawing of a 1966 Corsa stolen, err, borrowed from another club's newsletter. Francis ran our meeting and Bill Hector reported on it. Sylvan counted pennies up to $507. We planned to meet in July in Santa Fe. A new member was Jerry Kendall. Topics discussed included a raffle, an econo-run to Elephant Butte, the Great American Road Race, a picnic and a swap meet. We toured the Ed Black showroom. There were no new Corvairs, but lots of Corvettes, Chevettes, Caprices, Eurosports, Impalas, Camaros and a Cavalier. (Who remembers Cavaliers, Chevettes and Eurosports these days?) Sylvan gave the results of the economy run: Norm Brand in a Powerglide convertible swept the field at 36.3 MPG. The average for all nine vehicles was 30.7, not bad. A clipping from the Albuquerque Tribune told how Howard Bryan contributed to a 1960 Chevrolet commercial with his Corvair station wagon in the New Mexico ghost town of Cabezon. Howard was a long-time Albuquerque newspaper columnist. Bill McClellan continued his series on gas welding. Tech tips told about adjusting wheel bearings, replacing throttle linkage bushings, and watching out for bad gas that caused symptoms of fuel pump failure. Twenty-eight Years Ago - July 1978 - Volume 4 - Number 6 - Issue 34 The July 1978 cover had a photo of a 1960 Corvair owned by a dear lady named Gertrude who bought it new and never drove it over forty. Meeting minutes were brief, saying that we needed more participants and volunteers. Jim wrote about influential cars and concluded that the Mustang had far more effect on American car design than the Corvair... but believe it or not, the Mustang was really inspired by the Monza convertible! Tech tips told about getting good quality brake shoes, modifying your glove box latch to work smoother, getting a high-performance oil filter, a quickie repair for a broken clutch cable, and the purpose of the uneven spacing of fan blades on the cooling fan and the alternator fan -- thanks, Richard. And a fine article by Ike Meissner told about diagnosing and fixing problems with your fuel gauge. TRI-STATE BANQUET CROSSWORD PUZZLE CLUES ACROSS 1. Corvair parent _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Motors 5.
