There were sixteen in attendance including all officers. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $485.44 in the checking account and $2,449.16 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $2,934.60. New member Clint Collins, who lives in Tome, was a member of CNM a long time ago. He is currently working on a 1965 Monza Convertible which is almost done. He promises to have it ready for the State Fair car show. I don't have the Car Council report because I gave away all the copies that I had printed off line, and didn't take notes. Sorry. See Robert gold's report elsewhere in the newsletter. Jim Pittman announced that he and Heula had sent a copy of the last newsletter to everyone who attended the Tri-State meet. This was done at their own expense. The Benzels sent a thank you note to Jim and Heula. Upcoming activities include on Saturday August 5th, the Old Route 66 cleanup. It is important that if we are going to continue this we must have more warm bodies show up. If there are enough people it doesn't take long. The next day, Sunday August 6th, is the All Clubs New Mexico Car Council picnic. There are details elsewhere in the newsletter. Still in August is the Unser Museum tour on Saturday the 19th. The tour will run from 14:00 to 16:00 followed by a BBQ at President Ray's house. A map will be passed out at the August meeting to help you get to his house. We should also do some planning on what to bring in the way of potluck dishes. Robert Gold has already made contact with the State Fair people for the car show in September . Knowing Robert it is probably already all completed. October will have the Balloon Fiesta Car Show. We did not push it as a club activity last year, but the few who went said it was great. You parade in to a wild crowd and get great parking spaces for the Fiesta. The Isotopes ball game was well attended, about 25 people, and everyone had a great time. Thanks to Robert Gold for arranging it. Also thanks to Hurley Wilvert for his presentation about his career as a professional motorcycle racer. I bet that there are many interesting stories in our club about some of our members' past activities. Ray had the Tri-State Attendance Trophy engraved with the club's name and displayed it at the meeting. The July 4th show on the Plaza in Santa Fe was not as big this time as in the past. There were five CNM members present with three Corvairs. There were only about 80 cars total. United Way runs it and it is becoming more political each year and it appears that they would prefer to not have to bother with the cars. That way they could set up lots of booths to raise money. There were thousands in attendance and the people seemed to appreciate the cars even if the United Way officials did not. There is a gentleman named Berry Ganoe who was a line production engineer at the Willow Run plant when they made the Corvair. We will try to have him as a speaker at a future meeting. We adjourned at 19:46. - Chuck =CNM= JULY BOARD NOTES Chuck Vertrees The board meeting was called to order at Business Printing Service at 17:03 on 7/19/06. Present were Ray Trujillo, Jim and Heula Pittman, John Wiker, Wendell Walker, Robert Gold, and Chuck Vertrees. President Ray said that he had printed new cards for CNM showing our new meeting place and the time of our meeting. The cards have the club's official web site instead of a telephone number. Also he received a mailing from the San Diego club which is sponsoring the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet. This year it will be the weekend of October 27-29th. They will be raffling a 1964 Spider Convertible for $10.00 per ticket. There was a picture included and there will be more information at the regular August meeting. John Wiker said that he has planned club breakfasts for September at the Owl Cafe at Eubank & Lomas and for October 21st at Jimmy's Cafe on Jefferson. The September date will be the day before the State Fair Show. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $403.18 in the checking account and $2,449.16 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $2,852.43. He also expressed that he was more comfortable with this balance than some of those in the recent past. Heula Pittman announced that she had heard indirectly from Del Patten that Sharon Bryan, wife of Jack Bryan had died. They have been long time members of CNM and although they have been living in Texas for some time, they have kept their CNM membership. The Sunshine Committee will send Jack a sympathy card from the club. There was no report on membership since Dave Huntoon and Sylvan Zuercher were unable to attend the meeting. None of us knew of any new members. Robert Gold reported on the Car Council meeting. Sunday August 6th will be the annual Car Council picnic. It will be at Jemez Falls Campground. It is planned that those going could meet at the Santa Anna Casino parking lot and caravan to the picnic. The Car Council will provide drinks, water and sodas. Members who are coming should bring their own food. There will be NO fires allowed! More details will be available elsewhere in the newsletter along with a map. There will be a lunch for those who volunteered at the Museum Car Show. This will be on July 23rd and those invited have been notified by e-mail. The Car Council Swap Meet will be in Los Lunas on September 22nd-24th. The Sunday date conflicts with the State Fair show, but there are two other days you can go to the swap meet. The CARS movie premier at the Kimo went well. The producers originally wanted to have the premier at one of the big movie plexes but The Car Council held out for the Kimo and won. The Kimo management would like to have some more car club functions. Jim Pittman needs all material for this month's newsletter by this weekend, preferably by Friday. Upcoming events for August are first the "Old Route 66" cleanup which CNM has committed to do for quite some time. In the past we have had good turnouts. However, the last two times the job has fallen on two to three people. This is not fair. We should be able to turn out at least 5 to 8 people. Wives and children of proper age are also welcomed. Before my wife became an invalid, we turned out many times in wind or rain. August 6th is the Car Council All Clubs Picnic as mentioned above. The 19th is the Unser Museum tour starting at 14:00. After the tour all will adjourn to Ray and Sylvia's house for BBQ. Ray said he and Sylvia will supply hamburgers, hot dogs and wings along with the fixing's along with drinks. Please bring a side dish or desert. There will be a map at the August meeting to show you how to get to their house. Everyone should remember that we have our annual election of officers coming up in October. Start thinking NOW what office you will want to run for! The Forth of July show on the Plaza in Santa Fe was attended by five CNM members with three Corvairs. There were only about 80 cars total, which is way down from many times in the past. It is being run by United Way and they regard the car show as something which is only taking up space that they could put a booth into that would give them more selling space to raise more money. As mentioned in the meeting notes, a gentleman living in Santa Fe named Ganoe was connected with the Willow Run GM plant when the last Corvairs were made. We have heard stories about the "last" Corvair produced and how it was mistreated on the production line. It would be interesting to hear from someone who knows how the cars were built. Ray has tried to contact him several times but has been unsuccessful so far. Robert Gold said he has been in negations with Mr. Craig (?) at the fair grounds and has it all set up for the State Fair show with the same number of ribbons as last year. He said that the fair has gone all computer now and it has slowed things down until everyone gets used to doing things the "new" way. He likes doing business with CNM because we are flexible and agreeable. We all know that this is because of the great job that Robert does. There was a discussion about the Boydston award. It was meant to be an award for Corvair people in the participating clubs. We need to push the Colorado clubs to submit at least one or two nominees from each club. Personal contacts may be the way to do this. Members should go to our web site and see the extensive array of photographs. In this line, Jim sent some articles on the Tri-State from our newsletter along with some photographs to the CORSA Communique. He has since heard back from them wanting some high resolution photographs, so it looks as though CNM will get some publicity through Jim's efforts, possibly in the August Communique. Also along this line it was mentioned earlier that Jim and Heula had sent a copy of the newsletter to everyone who attended the Tri-State, and it should be noted that there have been several thanks and compliments on their action. There was another item which took quite a bit of discussion at the board meeting. This is the large number of private discussions and visiting that go on during our meetings and even when our guest speaker is giving his presentation. This is very impolite to our guest! He or she has made a special attempt to come to our meeting at our invitation, and then we are rude enough to talk and visit during the presentation. This is uncalled for! There was discussion of having the presentation before the meeting, or giving everyone 10 minutes after the meeting and before the presentation. There was no permanent solution arrived at but this needs to be considered. The board felt this was something that the membership might discuss. I know that sometimes I have difficulty hearing something that I need for my notes that I miss because of the extraneous conversation noise. The meeting was dismissed at 18:12. =CNM= HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go to each of our CNMers who celebrate in August: August 3 Nathan Williams August 4 Geoff Johnson August 8 Joel Nash August 11 Lee Reider August 16 Bill McClellan August 16 Lee Olsen August 24 Bernie Urbassik CONGRATULATIONS go to "Mr. and Mrs. President" Ray and Sylvia Trujillo who celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary on August 7. =CNM= MECHANICALLY UN-INCLINED Ray Trujillo Hello Everyone! August is a fairly busy month for our club so I'll get right down to business. First off we have our third Route 66 clean-up of the year scheduled for August 5th, at 8:00am. At our last clean-up we only had three members show up, so let's have a better turnout this time, let's keep our mile of Route 66 clean. The very next day on August 6th, the New Mexico Car Club Council is having their annual picnic in Jemez Springs, so read Robert Gold's article in this month's newsletter to get all the information about the event. Then on August 19th, our club is scheduled to go to the Unser Museum from 2:00-4:00pm and I know many of you are excited to see it, myself included. Hopefully, Al Unser Sr. will be there to host our group. The main reason I scheduled it on the 19th is because Al Senior is supposed to be in town and working at the Museum that Saturday. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Immediately after the Museum tour we'll caravan to my home for a traditional summer BBQ of hamburgers and hot dogs. If you can, please bring a side dish or dessert. It should be a lot of fun so plan on attending. Speaking of summer, it was three summers ago when I bought my 1965 Corsa convertible in Phoenix, Arizona. My family and I were on our way to Puerto Penasco, Mexico when we decided to stop and have dinner and spend the night in Phoenix. While we were waiting for our supper to be prepared I began to read the local newspaper and I saw in the classified ads two Corvairs for sale. Now I didn't have any real intention to buy another Corvair but when I read the words "140 hp Corsa Convertible" suddenly my interest level increased. My wife Sylvia sensed I was up to something and right before telling her about the ad she blurted out "I can see your wheels turning." So I calmly told her there's a Corvair convertible for sale and since we still have a few hours of daylight left we should go see it. You know how it is guys, I'm trying to make it sound like it's part of the vacation itinerary. She reluctantly agrees and sternly tells me "We're going to see it, not buy it". I'm okay with that and figure I better not push my luck any further because I really just want to see this car, or so I thought. About fifteen minutes later I see the car, and not only does the owner have a Corsa convertible, he also has an early convertible and a late coupe. We talk a little while about Corvairs and then gradually I express my interest in test driving the late convertible. So I take the convertible out for a test drive and I'm completely impressed with the performance of the 140 hp engine and the way the car handles. Upon returning, the owner, whose name is Tom Martin and who is at the time a member of the Cactus Corvair club, asks me what I think. I try to hide my excitement by playing it cool and saying it was nice and I liked it but we were on our way to Mexico for five days and I'd have to think about it. In the meantime Sylvia could see what was happening, so she starts tugging away at me because she figures she better get me out of there before I do something crazy, like make him an offer. For her, it was a lot like getting our kids out of the toy store. Well, she got me out of there without incident and the following day we left for our scheduled five days in Mexico. Now I truly thought a few days away from the test drive experience would cure my itching for that late model convertible. How wrong I was. In fact the opposite happened, every night I would dream of driving around in that convertible and feeling like I was twenty-five years old again. Can you say mid-life crisis? As each day went by I wanted the car more and more. I now had to convince Sylvia how much I wanted, oops... needed the car for mental reasons. After much begging and pleading, it wasn't a pretty sight, she agrees but says I'd need to sell the 1964 Monza sedan. I'm hesitant because I only had the '64 sedan a few months and was not ready to sell it because I hadn't fully enjoyed it yet, so I carefully replied "Honey, sweetie pie, I'll sell it eventually but not immediately." For those of you who don't know, let's just say the '64 sedan is on borrowed time. Five days later and back in Phoenix I arrived at Tom's house to purchase the car. Now I must have looked like the typical tourist complete with a gaudy tropical designed shirt, Bermuda shorts and huarache sandals, because Tom remarks, "You don't look very mechanically inclined." Hence, my article's name, except with the "Un" prefix added to the word "inclined." Tom asked if I was in the New Mexico club and I told him that I had just met Sylvan Zuercher of CNM at the Museum car show a few months earlier and had plans to join CNM. Tom emphasized that since I now was going to have two Corvairs that it would be a real good idea to join because it would enable me to learn a great deal from other Corvair lovers. You know, the interesting thing about all this, I get the club newsletters from many of the other Corvair clubs and I read where Tom Martin is now the president of the Cactus Corvair club. Wow! I'll bet neither Tom nor I would've ever thought that we'd both be the presidents of our respective clubs just a few short years later, and coincidentally at the same time. It's funny how things work out sometimes. I should call Tom and let him know what good advice he gave me about joining CNM. Tom was completely right because, since joining CNM, members have always been graciously willing to share their knowledge and know-how. I'm learning more and more all the time and maybe someday I'll be "Mechanically Inclined." Thank you members! Well, I guess that's enough said for now, so hopefully I'll see you at the next club meeting. -- Ray Trujillo =CNM= CAR COUNCIL REPORT - MEETING OF JUNE 28, 2006 Robert Gold Your trusty car council rep was on the job at the June meeting of the council. There wasn't much in the way of controversy so I'll start this report with a description of a unique classic car that was in the Old Car Garage's parking lot. Once in a while a car shows up at the Old Car Garage that "knocks my socks off" and this was one of those times. There sitting by the gate was a 1956 Lincoln Mark II. To give you a perspective on this car, at the time it was produced by Ford, the car cost a current equivalent of $70,000. It cost as much as the Rolls Royce of its time. This California car was blue in color and was big but not bulky. I immediately imagined myself behind its massive steering wheel lounging in its leather bench seat. I really feel that Ford got this one right in all aspects of its construction. Take some time and call up a picture of this beauty off the web. If you ever see one "in the flesh" count yourself lucky. I felt I was. On to the council meeting report. The first agenda topic was the museum car show. For all CNM'ers who attended the show it should come as no surprise that the show was considered an unqualified success. There were more and better cars at the show in spite of the increase in entry cost. No one seemed to mind the price increase. The increased fee resulted in the show making a nice amount of money. Enough even to offset the loss from last year's show. If you missed the show you really missed a good one. Try to join us next year. The next section of my report should be titled "Power to the car people." This is a story of how a concerted effort by the right people can make things happen. It is the story of how the premier of Pixar's movie "CARS" wound up being shown at the KIMO theater instead of the modern multiplex in downtown. As a bit of history, there were two competing plans for the premier of the movie. The out-of-towners from Phoenix wanted to have the showing in that downtown multiplex. I guess they felt newer was better. Or maybe it was because the movie house owners had ties to the Phoenix group. At the May meeting of the car council it appeared this group was holding all the cards. The competing plan was to use the historic Kimo Theater to emphasize Route 66. All the supporters of that plan had going for them was "Right and the American way." However, the car council decided to formally show its support for the Kimo and passed a resolution to be given to the premier's organizers. As it played out, the resolution's wording carried the day. The resolution stated that the car community in Albuquerque would not support the multiplex plan and would not supply cars for the premier. That scared the organizers enough to go with the Kimo and justice prevailed. There were about 70 classic cars in the parade for the movie. In addition there were 26 police cars and our Mayor. The Corvair Club was well represented. I want to thank those of you who were there. I was in beautiful El Paso, so I missed all the fun. I've been told that the movie showing was very well done. It worked out so well that the Kimo management expressed an interest in having another car-based event. We'll see how that plays out. Lastly, we talked about the upcoming New Mexico Council of Car Clubs picnic. It will take place on Sunday, August 6 at the Jemez Falls Camp Grounds. This year the show has been organized by "Burnin' It Up: The Firebird & TransAm Club of New Mexico." I'll have a separate article in this newsletter about details of the picnic. It sounds like it will be a really fun time. That seems to be all I have for this month's report. I'll have information on September's swap meet later. Tune in next month for more (or less) car council news. =CNM= CAR COUNCIL PICNIC Robert Gold This summer has been moving along at light speed. There have been plenty of car events to enjoy. Here is your chance to have one more good time before the "car season" is over. The New Mexico Car Council with the help of the Firebird & TransAm Club of New Mexico is putting on its annual All Cars Picnic on Sunday, August 6 at the Jemez Falls Camp Grounds. The plan is for us to meet at the Santa Ana Casino on Hwy 44 & 528 at 9:30 am and caravan from there to the camp grounds. Activities will include hiking, seeing the visitors center, and visiting Soda Dam and Ponderosa Winery. Bring your own food for the picnic. Drinks will be supplied by the council. Due to the dry conditions we're not able to have fires for cooking. See the map on page 12! If you have any questions please contact Mike at 385-8764. As you remember, CNM took the lead last year in organizing the picnic and we had a great time. I'm sure that it will be as much fun this year -- so be sure to attend!! A SEQUEL FROM VIRGINIA Del Patten Well, Jim did tell me he missed all my extra exclamation points and I guess he wants a space filler in case you guys don't write something sometime in the future. One of those things editors do I guess... don't think he has ever asked me for something... I was always thrust upon him so to speak!! Hear you guys had a great time at the Tri-State and that means it is almost time for the big meet in Buffalo. I won't be there even though I am pretty close being in Virginia and all. Another ankle surgery is slowing me down. Can't shift the '65... come to think of it, I can't shift any of my Corvairs even if they were all in moving condition! I did put a few miles on the Fish car but it was mostly to and from the train station. Kim might have put more miles on it than me! I did have the pleasure to attend the Vair Fair hosted this year by the Central Virginia Corvair Club (CVCC) in the bucolic (isn't that a great word?) town of Hopewell VA. Not sure what Hopewell is known for but the folks sure put on a great car show. I joined CVCC when I got there (got the club patch too) and helped out in the hospitality suite. They served breakfast every morning!! And not just donuts and coffee! My dad's favorite food... biscuits and gravy, egg and sausage casserole, assorted fruit and of course donuts and coffee. Sodas all day and cookies to break the afternoon before hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner... seems like there was some barbeque in there one night too (Kim will tell you the thing that always stands out in my memories of a trip is what I ate!). Allen Bristow (past CORSA pres) raced up and down the street in his Yenko and Smitty (you all know Smitty, right?) managed to steal Allen's recently acquired Monza Jr while his back was turned (he returned it... not sure I would have!). Some of you may know Smitty's brown and tan 1964 Monza Wagon... the same one he tows a little trailer behind to most conventions... seems he had a bit a few problems getting to and from the last convention in Oregon but it is back in driving form again... his was one of the several nice wagons there. And they even had the ever so much fun valve cover races. I know you are thinking what kind of a race can you have with an old Corvair valve cover? Well, it ain't the Indy 500 but it went right down to the wire and Smitty's wife won the whole thing. I won a bunch of door prizes probably because the Pleaus and the Martineks weren't there. But I didn't win any of the big door prizes... several sponges and some wax and such was all that came home with me! Still I had a lot of fun and recommend you catch one to make your summer complete the next time you're in Virginia. In the meantime, I have acquired new deluxe headlights for the coupe and rebuilt carbs and a high output alternator to keep the battery up after I hook up the lights! None of which I have gotten on the car since I don't have my helpers Dave, Geoff and Sally and Wendy out here to fix what I break while installing all the goodies. Since I can't drive it anyway, I am not in much of a hurry! Maybe I'll get some of it done when I am supposed to be sitting around after my next surgery... just don't tell Kim! Well, that's all from me for now. I will write up the lights when I get them installed but if you want to know about them just go looking for Daniel's Web site... Daniel Stern Lighting... here's the ones I got.. http://dsl.torque.net/products/csr.html He has a couple of articles about them and some wiring diagrams and such on his website... Diagrams look just about like the one Wendy gave me before I left so I figure with two great minds, how can I go wrong... Dave would tell that Murphy's Law applies whenever I touch a tool to a Corvair but not everything breaks... at least not right away! So you folks keep the light burning for my return and keep driving those Corvairs! -- Any Old Mouse... =CNM= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - August 1999 Volume 25 - Number 8 - Issue 287 Steve, Dave and Ollie grin from our cover photo as they pose next to a trove of filled trash bags on one of our Old Route 66 cleanup excursions. The weather was cool but windy - not a good condition for filling those flimsy plastic bags. New members were Wayne Uhl of Cloudcroft and Richard Foster of White Rock. Dennis conducted our meeting at Casa Chevrolet and Wendell e-mailed that our finances stood at $6329. Mark Domzalski had been elected CORSA president for another term. We had a good Tri-State event at Salidas, Colorado and all were happy that Kay and Tarmo received the Boydston Award. The Tri-State for 2000 was to be in Albuquerque in conjunction with the Museum Car Show. Several Corvairs were in Santa Fe for the July 4th plaza show, but English cars got all the awards. At the board meeting we had a report on the car show at Cottonwood Mall, away west in Rio Rancho. We planned a camping trip to Jack's Creek in the Pecos and a map with directions was provided. A detailed article from Virtual Vairs by Norm Helmkay discussed keeping a Powerglide automatic transmission alive in an Ultravan. Yes, heat is the big killer, and driving a heavy Ultravan up and down hills or into the wind in the summer is perhaps the worst case! Norm told how he added an oil temperature gauge to keep an eye on the fluid temperature, and he suggested installing an oil cooler (perhaps an early Corvair 12-plate) to help keep the Dextron ATF below 170 degrees at all times. Norm added a tip for looking at a drop of the fluid to see it it has been overheated. Finally, four letters to the editor discussing a recent article on the Corvair's unsafe image were borrowed from the Wall Street Journal. Fourteen Years Ago - August 1992 Volume 18 - Number 8 - Issue 203 The cover photo came from Wayne Christgau and showed his 1969 Monza in front of Crazy Horse Mountain in South Dakota. We met at the Ken Johns Lincoln-Mercury dealership, across the street from Casa Chevrolet. Sylvan introduced new member Ollie Scheflow. Wendy reported $1,043 as the current CNM bankroll. Milton reported that 21 members turned out to help move new Chevrolets from Ed Black's to the Casa dealership location; no Corvettes were reported missing. Casa Chevrolet offered to pick up the postage for "Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter" for which we are all still thankful. Steve reported that we sponsored two cars in The Great American Car Race. He also reported on our trip to the Santa Fe Fourth of July show and our tour of Tinkertown. Previews included an Arts in the Park Tour by Sylvan; the State Fair Car Show by LeRoy; an Orange Barrel Funkhana by Chuck; and the Christmas Dinner by the Sticklers. Larry provided a photo of a 1960 Corvair floating through the flooded intersection of Second and Indian School several years ago. Tech tips told us how to fasten those early model air cleaner clips without chipping the paint, and the use of pieces of plastic water pipe and glue to repair old cracked Corvair body parts. We had "A Poem Four Bill" about the hazards of trusting your computer's spell checker. Twenty-one Years Ago - August 1985 - Vol. 11 - Nr 8 - Issue 119 Our cover was another Mark Morgan Corvair-derived race car. Our meeting was in Santa Fe at Molly's Kitchen, arranged by Tarmo and Kay. Bill McClellan's "Gas Welding" concluded with part four. Mark Morgan told us about how he started drawing modified Corvairs after a comment by Sylvan. Bill Reider's tech column was on fixing floating valves and changing oil. Twenty-eight Years Ago - August 1978 - Vol. 4 - Number 7 - Issue 35 Our cover depicted a rare Loadside. At a board meeting we said our diversity was both a strength and a weakness: it was hard to find activities that everyone would participate in. Jim wrote technical articles on turbocharging. The first one said it was not a good idea on Corvairs. Bob Helt had an article on spark plugs, Francis Boydston wrote about cooling considerations and Gary Jarvis wrote about Corvair brakes. (We pulled a couple of these from other newsletters.) =CNM= (Page 12 had a map showing how to get to the NMCCC picnic.) =CNM= Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, a chartered chapter of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
