Software includes Bernie To The Rescue 2.6, Addressed For Success, ShadowWrite 1.3.4, Platinum Paint 2.0, Pointless and Harmonie for the Apple IIgs and AppleWorks 6, Photoshop CS, GraphicConverter 5.6, BBEdit 8 and InDesign CS 3 on the Macs. Printing is via HP LaserJet IIp and Apple LaserWriter Pro 630. Ask for more technical details if you are interested. And when I'm 64, I'll get by with a little help from my friends. =CNM= AUGUST MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 19:05 on August 2nd at Highland Senior Center. All officers were present. There were 21 members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $541.63 in the regular checking account and $2,461.36 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,002.99. Sylvan Zuercher reported that he had been in touch with a former member, Dick Cochran. Dick still lives in Grants but is interested in rejoining CNM. He plans to be at the September meeting. When Dick was in the club before he arranged a tour to a Mine Museum in Grants and going to Grants on old "Highway 66" which is possible to do while having to drive only about 14 miles on the I-40 freeway. Robert Gold and Geoffrey Johnson reported on the Car Council meeting. Both agreed that it was good -- and short. The current Car Council President, Robert Agnew, is doing a great job of running the meetings, keeping them tight and under control. All dates for functions are set. On August 26th there will be an Automotive Detailing Class at the Old Car Garage, starting at 4:00 PM. This is a free class open to everyone. It will go through all the different steps from preparing the paint to final quick detailing. Different classes of products and their purposes will be explained as well as the science behind taking care of paint and other surfaces. This sounds like a good opportunity to learn how to get your car ready for the State Fair show in September. The NMCCC swap meet is coming up on September 22-24 in Los Lunas. The Sunshine Committee had no news to report. Jim Pittman reported that CORSA Communique published a Tri-State photo and a condensed version of Ray Trujillo's article. He thought Ray's original article was outstanding. Jim also said that we should all thank President Ray for handing out an agenda at our meetings. It makes the Secretary's job much easier as well. President Ray brought up several topics. First, he has printed up a lot of new CNM business cards with our new meeting location, the time of meeting and the club's web page, and the cards are available to members. The second item, also covered in the last board meeting notes, was the excessive visiting and talking during the business meeting and while our guest speakers were making their presentation. Two possible options were suggested. First, we could have the meeting first then have a 10 minute talk break and then have our presentation, or, second, we could have the talk or presentation first, then a 10 minute talk break then followed by the meeting. Sylvan Zuercher thought that the first option was the better and Dave Huntoon thought that maybe with this having been brought up we might continue as at present and see if the membership will control themselves. Upcoming activities include on Saturday August 5th our "Old Route 66" cleanup. This starts at 08:00 and hopefully the turnout will be better than last time. The next event is the following day, Sunday August 6th, the All Clubs Picnic. August 19th is CNM's tour of the Unser Museum followed by a BBQ and get-together at Sylvia and Ray Trujillo's house. All of the above activities will be over by the time you read this, but look what you missed if you didn't turn out! September 22nd-24th is the Car Council Swap Meet in Los Lunas, and September 24th is the State Fair car show. For the State Fair show, as in past years, CNM members should meet at the old Furrs parking lot at San Pedro and Central at 07:00 AM so that they can go in together and probably get in without having to pay. The September breakfast meeting will be at the Owl Cafe on Eubank and in October we will go back to Jimmy's Restaurant on Jefferson. October 8th is the 2006 Balloon Fiesta Car Display. We have not played this up much in the past. Ask Robert Gold about it. You get great parking for the Balloon Fiesta, the people are appreciative and you don't have to get out too early. Cars will meet at 07:30 on Edith Boulevard, under the Alameda overpass. We should try to get a group of Corvairs and notify madmike@swcp.com or call him at 323-6022. The Great Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet is coming up at the end of October. Dates are October 27-29. The San Diego club is raffling off a car at the Toss. I didn't see the picture but I am told it looks like a nice car. There should be more information at the September meeting. Sylvan said that Bill Hector is having to move and he would like to sell his 1967 4-door. The drive train has been completely rebuilt, the interior is very nice. It needs new rear shocks and some brake work. He will take $1800.00 which is about half of what it is worth. The meeting was adjourned at 19:43. -- Chuck =CNM= AUGUST BOARD NOTES Chuck Vertrees The August board meeting was held at Business Printing Services on August 15th at 17:00. Present were Ray Trujillo, John Wiker, Robert and Anne Mae Gold, the Gold children (who have really grown since I last saw them) and Chuck Vertrees. Ray announced that he has called to reserve space for CNM cars at the Balloon Fiesta Show. From what I have heard this should be a great chance to show off your car and get great positions to see the Fiesta. Ray has also called the San Diego Club to get twenty raffle tickets for the 1964 Turbo Spyder being auctioned off at the GWFBT&SM. John said that the Car Council Annual Picnic did not go as well as it should have. The club that did the planning had everything all ready and in good shape, but the weather scared a lot of people off. As it turned out, the weather was no problem at all. There were only 21 people who attended, seven Car Council type cars and seven Brand X. John said that those who were there had a good time, but that there were a lot of soft drinks and chips left over. John has also checked with the Scorpions. When they get into their new arena we might consider taking a party some night. Ticket price reductions start at 10 ticket groups. On the monthly breakfasts, in September we will have breakfast at the Fair Grounds after we get our cars set up. The October breakfast will be at Jimmy's on the 21st and November 18th will be at the Owl Cafe on Eubank. The Secretary did not have anything to report, and Treasurer Wendell was not present. It was brought up that the way it is being phrased in the newsletter when members are behind in their dues is that they are "dropped." This sounds pretty harsh, especially for long term members who have been busy or out of town. The board's decision was that the terminology should be changed to "inactive." The Sunshine committee sent a note that Gayle and Richard Finch are dealing with some health problems. Keep them in your prayers. There was no membership report. Robert said that at the next meeting we will be looking for volunteers to help at the Car Council Swap Meet in late September. The third day of the Swap Meet is the day CNM will be at the State Fair, but this leaves Friday and Saturday to go to the Swap Meet. Robert also mentioned the Balloon Fiesta Show. Editor Jim Pittman needs all material for the newsletter by August 25th. There was a good turnout for the last "Old Route 66" cleanup. There were about ten people who came out, the weather was good, and things were over in good time. By the time you read this the tour of the Unser Museum and the BBQ at the Trujillos' will be over. If you were not there, check with those who were and see what a good time you missed. Other upcoming events are the Car Council Swap Meet in Los Lunas on September 22nd-24th. There will also be a Tractor and Engine show on Saturday in Los Lunas. Sunday is CNM's day at the State Fair. CNM members should meet at the old Furrs parking lot at San Pedro and Central and be ready to go in at 07:00. October 4th is the election of officers for the coming year. Be sure and be there to vote. October 8th is the Balloon Fiesta Car Show. Those going will need to arrive on Edith at the Alameda overpass no later than 07:30 AM. Robert Gold can give you more details. October 21st is breakfast at Jimmy's at 7007 Jefferson at 08:30. October 27th-29th is the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet in Palm Springs, California. October 28th is the last "Old Route 66" cleanup for the year. The start time will be 09:00 and we hope for the same excellent attendance we had on the last cleanup. We have not talked to Steve and Rita about having a potluck and auction in November, so hold that possibility open on your calendar. At the last membership meeting the excessive talking issue was addressed and a couple of new meeting formats were proposed to possibly help control the excessive noise. We believe the membership decided to keep the meeting format the same, and since the problem had been brought to everyone's attention it was agreed that private conversations should stop. Well, the summer monsoon season has lasted longer than normal this year and I hope none of you have had any major flooding problems. Personally I've really enjoyed all the rain and the accompanying cooler temperatures. I'm glad the summer storms didn't affect our Old Route 66 clean-up attendance. CNM had ten members show up on a cool crisp Saturday morning and since we had plenty of help the job was done by 9:00am. Since we had finished so early I tried to round up any members who might want to help me satisfy a pancake craving that had come over me as we cleaned up Old Route 66. I had no takers but I still wanted pancakes. On my way home I was looking for a place to eat when I saw the fairly new Golden Pride restaurant on east Central and remembered they had those great frontier sweet rolls. I know, I know, it wasn't pancakes but it would more than satisfy my sweet tooth. That particular morning I drove my "not ready to sell yet" 1964 Monza sedan and as I was devouring my sweet roll, I noticed a couple admiring my car. As they came into the restaurant I asked them if they remembered Corvairs, and both of them joyfully said it was their first car and they began to tell me about their great memories. We must've talked at least fifteen minutes and I told them about our club and it just was a really nice conversation. As I was leaving, totally happy with a terrific sugar high, another couple saw me getting into my car and you guessed it, they asked about the car and we began another great conversation about Corvairs. Now if I had been driving my everyday vehicle and stopped to have my sweet roll, I'm pretty sure I never would have met and talked to those two very nice couples. Anyway, Thank God for Corvairs, sweet rolls, pancakes, ice cream, pies, cakes, chocolate, sugar and spice and everything nice. Okay, moving on, the following day the New Mexico Car Council held its annual picnic near Jemez Springs and the turnout wasn't as big as they expected. I think the threatening stormy skies kept people away. According to John Wiker only twenty-one people showed up and the stormy weather never really came. John and Cary Hubbard were the only members from CNM who attended. Those who attended had a good time even though the turnout was light. As for our Unser Museum tour, I felt the attendance was also very small. I thought we would at least have thirty-five to forty members and guests come to the museum. According to my count, CNM had slightly over twenty people attend. Anyway, the Unser Museum is a really well done attraction and those of us who saw it really enjoyed it. As a native New Mexican I felt extremely proud of the accomplishments the Unser family achieved over the last five decades. The Museum displayed their accomplishments throughout the building with vintage race cars, trophies, videos of race victories, pictures, race gear, racing engines and a neat gift shop. As it happened, Al Sr. wasn't there but that was about the only disappointment. After the tour, my wife Sylvia and I had a BBQ for the members of CNM and I hope all who came got plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs and hot wings to eat. It turned out to be a nice evening and I hope everyone had a good time. It was a pleasure to have your company and thank you to everyone who brought a side dish or dessert to complete the dinner menu. Well, summer is winding down and it'll soon be fall. CNM's fall schedule looks like we have some exciting events like the State Fair car show, the NMCCC swap meet, the balloon fiesta car show, the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and the annual CNM potluck and Auction. Well, I guess that's enough said for now, so hopefully I'll see you at the next club meeting. -- Ray Trujillo =CNM= AUGUST OLD ROUTE 66 CLEANUP Oliver Scheflow The Club held its third cleanup of 2006 on Saturday, August 5th. It was raining when I got up so I called David Huntoon to see if it was raining in Cedar Crest. He said it was only a light rain there so we decided to go ahead and meet at the parking area and decide on the weather then. Fortunately, by the time we were ready to start it had stopped raining and the ground did not look muddy. We had a very good turn out and we finished shortly after 9 o'clock. The recent rains had produced a lot of wild flowers and leaves in many shades of green. Some areas had so much growth that we could not see through it making it impossible to see small items of trash. Some of the unusual items found were: a wire headlight stone guard, a bed comforter, an 18 wheeler mud guard rubber strip about eight feet long, a coconut nut, a corroded Colorado State quarter, a Woody Allen DVD "MATCH POINT," and a complete set of keys to a Toyota vehicle rounded out the list of lost treasures. Those who participated in this cleanup were: Larry Blair, Robert and Javier Gold, Pat Hall, Cary Hubbard, Dave Huntoon, Jim Pittman, Bill Reider, Ollie Scheflow, Ray Trujillo and John Wiker. Our cleanups start at 9:00 AM in March and October and 8:00 AM in May and August to avoid the heat. Our next cleanup will be Saturday October 28th at 9:00 AM. I hope to see you then. Thanks to all the participants. --Ollie =CNM= REPORT ON THE CAR COUNCIL MEETING OF AUGUST 23, 2006 Robert Gold I first want to thank Geoff Johnson for subbing for me at the July Car Council meeting. Geoff emailed me the following summary of that meeting: "The meeting was good, and short. That bunch of people is entirely different this year. I am really impressed with how Bob Agnew runs the group. Nothing much except everything was on schedule and running well. All dates are set. There is going to be a special presentation to the council and club members on the 26th (August, 4:00 pm) at Old Car Garage by Mike Maestas on Detailing." I think Geoff did a good job in describing how the current council is now being run. He later mentioned to me that the drama of past years is now gone. No one has walked out and no one shouts at the meetings. The meetings are now focused on promoting the car hobby and I feel that is the way it should be. I also am impressed by the fact that Mike Maestas of the Trans-Am club has brought some new blood to the group. Concerning the August 23 meeting, I was able to attend that get-together. The stars seemed to be aligned this month (I think you can occasionally see them through the rain clouds) and I'm actually able to submit this report before the CNM newsletter goes to press. Therefore the news I'm telling you about is not weeks old. In the past I've given you a running commentary about the classic cars on display at the Old Car Garage. You may also know that I miss a meeting from time to time, so when I attend a meeting the lineup of cars usually changes quite a bit. This month was no exception. There were so many interesting cars that I could (and maybe should) fill up my report with descriptions of them. However, I'll focus on just one of those gems. This is a car that when I saw it the name JIM PITTMAN popped into my mind. I've known Jim for a number of years and I think I have some idea of what kind of cars pique his interest. The car that I think Jim would have truly enjoyed was a 1953 turquoise XK 120 Jaguar. I was told that the car has been in restoration for the past two years and it looks like it will take a while longer to finish it. But it is a beauty. According to the story, a wealthy (I guess that's sort of redundant) woman from Santa Fe owns the car and decided on the color to match a pair of boots she owns. Well, this woman has wonderful taste and I feel richer for being able to see this thing of beauty. Now on to the meeting. After the obligatory officers' reports we got into the meat of Car Council activities. I need to mention that the council now has a new VP, Mike Maestas of the Trans-Am club. I think it is a great addition to the management of the council, even though I don't know why or how it was done since elections aren't for a while. I guess I'll need to ask Geoff Johnson to see if he knows. Anyway the first report was made by Mike about the council picnic. First the good part. The weather was wonderful, the companionship was great, and the cars that turned out were superior. However, due to a combination of factors not many people attended. Yours truly was among the no-shows. It was either abandon my daughter Sara at a sleepover or go to the picnic. I guess I made the right decision? I was told that two CNM members did attend, John Wiker and Cary Hubbard. Thanks go to both of those members for representing the club. Hopefully we'll have a better turnout next year. Next on the agenda was talk about the Car Council swap meet. It will be held on September 22-24 in Los Lunas. Directions are as follows: Los Lunas is approximately 20 miles south of Albuquerque, exit 203 on Interstate 25. Go east on Rt. 6 about 1-1/2 miles, then turn south on State Road 314 about 1-1/2 miles. Look for the signs on Morris Road to find parking, vendor exhibit spaces and registration. For any club members who haven't attended this meet you need to take the time to see what it is all about. There are all sorts of neat things for sale and the meet itself is very well run. It is the third year down in Los Lunas and the council has done a fine job of learning from past mistakes. This year I've volunteered CNM to help out on Saturday morning from 7:30 until 9:30 at the entrance gate. So at the September CNM meeting I'll be asking for volunteers. For two hours of easy work you get an official Car Council volunteer's hat and a meal ticket good for food at the concession set up by the Luna Mansion. I've eaten at a lot of car events and most of the food is less than satisfactory... however, the Luna Mansion folks produce a bill of fare that is downright delicious. It would almost be worth attending the meet just to eat the food. And if you volunteer you get to eat for free -- such a deal! Since the swap meet is next month we've decided to hold the next Car Council meeting early on Wednesday, September 20 to take care of any pre-swap meet preparations. I guess that means I may have another on-time report for you next month. Our last topic of note had to do with a proposal from the well loved New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department to double the number of license plates we display on our cars. I can say that everyone in attendance was less that impressed with that proposal. As I understand it, the idea has yet to be endorsed by our Governor so there is a chance to "head it off at the pass." During the discussion about the change it was noted that such a "change" would obviously cost the drivers in New Mexico a lot of "change." The estimate from the Taxation and Revenue Department is that it could cost as much as $13 million dollars. Now we're talking about some real money here. And I give you one guess about who will be paying that money? Also, as the membership pointed out, many of our old cars do not have brackets for front license plates. Does anyone know where we can get a bracket for a 1948 Hudson? Another problem would be for cars that have year of production license plates on them. Trying to find two with the same number might be as easy as that weapons of mass destruction hunt. Needless to say the clubs represented weren't very happy and we voted to send a letter to the Governor voicing our opposition. It was also suggested that each individual club send a letter, so I'll be making such a motion at our next CNM meeting. Lastly, here is an observation that doesn't have anything to do with the Car Council. Over the years I have become accustomed to the abbreviation of "CNM" for our club name. It sort of rolls of the tongue so to speak. Anyway, we now have a competitor in town, the Community College of New Mexico, formally known as TVI. They now call themselves CNM. I guess the bright spot is that they may have some neat T-shirts or stickers that would have the CNM logo. All I can say is that we had it first and we are the best. I guess that's all I have for this month. This is the last day of the State Fair. We'll meet at the Furr's Cafeteria parking lot on the southwest corner of Central and San Pedro at around 7:00 AM and will leave around 7:20 to enter the Fairgrounds through gate 3. This is the furthermost gate to the south on San Pedro. We will be parking on Heritage Ave just south of the Manuel Lujan Building. Think of the show as a really convenient way to see this year's Fair. You'll have parking right smack in the middle of the fairgrounds and if we're lucky, you won't have to pay to get in! Show times are from 8:00 AM to approximately 3:30 PM. Ribbons will be awarded for three "best of" classes and seventeen novelty classes. This should assure that you'll be getting at least one ribbon to display to the world. As in the past I'll be asking those CNMers in attendance to do the judging. That way we'll all share in the joy of awarding the ribbons. You'll get to display your awards as soon as the judging is completed, which should be before lunch. See you there. =CNM= CAR CLUB PICNIC REPORT John Wiker Well, what a "bust" because only 21 people showed up. There were only 7 classic cars and 7 Brand Xs that braved the journey to the Jemez Valley Picnic area. It took us 1-1/2 hours of a lovely leisurely ride to get there. Once there, we ate our lunches and then hiked to the Falls, which were only about 1/4 mile away. With all the rain lately, the Falls was full of water and the river was running deep but very muddy. A few of us added to the adventure. Instead of returning the trail we took to get there, we walked up river about 1/2 mile, found another smaller falls and another trail that eventually led us back to the picnic area. The host club did everything they could to make it a good day. Plenty of soda, chips, deserts for all of us. Looked like they planned for about a hundred or more to attend. Needless to say, there was plenty left over for future events their club might have. We thought that most people may have been scared off by the weather. But it was a beautiful day, we had a covered picnic gazebo that would hold about 100 and our own private parking area. I personally did not hit any rain until I got back to Route 550 on the way home. On the way out from the picnic area, I stopped by the Soda Dam as it is called. This is a soft rock formation caused by warm water springs depositing sulfur. The cold Jemez river had cut a hole in the dam at one location and two more were being formed nearby. Across the street from the dam, an active hot springs was coming out the side of the hill, depositing more sulfur and making a natural hot-tub. The water was about 98 degrees. Funny how just 40 yards away, the river was running at about 40 degrees. You could have it both ways if you wanted to. Sorry to report that only two of our club members made the trip -- yours truly and another who you will recognize in the paper but was a turn-coat for the day and rode to the event in a Lincoln Continental. I have a digital disk with about twenty-four pictures for you to chose from. -- John =CNM= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - September 1999 - Volume 25 - Number 9 - Issue 288 On the cover, club officers Norm Brand, Robin DeVore, Francis Boydston and LeRoy Rogers candidly posed near a Corvair in the woods. VP Hurley ran our meeting as Dennis was out of town. Wendell reported $6,367 in the bank. Prospective new members Ron & Debbie Deck, proud new owners of a 1962 convertible, were introduced. A campout at Jack's Creek in the Pecos was planned, and later in the newsletter Larry told us how it went: a lot of rain, but an opportunity to get in some great fly fishing. Jerry told us about his new "Horseless Carriage" license plate which limited the miles he could drive each year and cost $12 for six years. Robert was organizing our State Fair car show. Ruth told us about her new Corvair rig: a Rampside with a side-door camper shell. Dave told us about a Confederate Air Force flying show in Odessa, Texas and suggested we organize a CNM overnight outing. Billiken found summer started early and gasoline prices were up - so what's new? In a long tech topic from Virtual Vairs, Larry Claypool and Seth Emerson discussed the bewildering variations of steering wheels, shafts, couplers and gear boxes that different year Corvairs came with. Swapping out a standard wheel for a simulated wood-rim wheel, a fixed wheel for a telescoping wheel or a one-piece shaft for a collapsable shaft were popular projects. Finally, we wasted an entire page telling what various tools are really good for. Example: "Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive parts not far from the object we are trying to hit." Fourteen Years Ago - September 1992 - Volume 18 - Number 9 - Issue 204 The cover showed Jim & Heula's 1965 Monza coupe at UNM. More photos of this pretty car were inside. Steve was our president. Robert Gold introduced his guest Ann. The treasury balance was $813. We had a great Fourth of July in Santa Fe and a curious visit to Tinkertown. Steve said our new meeting place at Casa Chevrolet was great except for parking. Jim made up a Burma Shave quotation: "Corvairs exhale, without a doubt, the same stuff politicians spout: hot air!" (Are we gonna get more for the next 15 months?) Billiken's characters also complained about politicians. Tech tips included identifying wheel bearing noise and keeping an eye on the condition of those late model motor mounts. Twenty-one Years Ago - September 1985 - Volume 11 - Number 9 - Issue 120 The September 1985 cover was a Mark Morgan fantasy showing a modified early coupe. Francis was president. We had $549 to spend. We discussed having a "subscription fee" for members who moved away but wanted to keep getting the newsletter. Billiken said the Corvair was a "great, noble and desirable" car. Bill McClellan gave us part five of his article on Gas Welding. Bill Reider's column described a breakdown on a lonely road far from home, and the friendly strangers who helped him get his car fixed and on his way again. Why don't we hear about wonderful people like this on the evening news? Tech tips told about starting up your engine after storage, repairing the Powerglide governor tab, a cylinder head temperature adapter and using your oil-dripping Corvair (should you have one - some of us don't) as a fire ant suppressor. Twenty-eight Years Ago - September 1978 - Volume 4 - Number 8 - Issue 36 Our cover showed Mario Andretti in a race car... not a Corvair, but at least the engine was in the back. We had a report on a misguided bill in the legislature to pay dealers $300 to scrap old cars. Ike Meissner gave a tech talk on what to do if your Corvair failed on the road. Mark Morgan commented on the turbocharger article from last month, and this month Jim gave us the "pro" article on the many advantages of turbocharged Corvairs. (Jim's argument must not have convinced himself, as he no longer owns a turbocharged Corvair. Two of them were too many.) Bill Reider's tech column was on the distributor and how to set it up when doing a real tune-up. Dick organized a great tour to the Mine Museum in Grants back in 1990 and an econo-run leading to a memorable lunch at the Co-op Restaurant in Estancia in 1991. Dick plans to be at the next meeting. Let's welcome Dick back to the club! =CNM= UNSER MUSEUM & BAR-B-QUE -- SATURDAY 19 AUGUST, 2006 Heula Pittman The weather forecast was for thunderstorms all day Saturday -- what's new for the Great Rainy Summer of 2006 -- but that didn't scare off twenty-five or so CNM members. We gathered at the Unser Museum at 2:00 PM and visited on the parking lot for a few minutes before going inside. Several boys and girls investigated the Number 4 Race car parked prominently in front of the Museum. It seemed to be a relic (or maybe a replica) from the earliest days at Indianapolis. Once inside, we browsed about the gift shop, checking out the various automotive books, videos, apparel, posters and memorabilia for sale. Then we stood in line for our tickets and learned that we had been given a group rate discount. This was an added plus for some of us -- those who can't claim to be just a few days older than the "senior citizen" 55. Our tour guide took us all around the building, showing us the various points of interest. And as usual, many cool stories were prompted by our Members as we looked at the racing cars on display. There were two videos for us to watch that explained the history of the Unser Racing team, which includes four generations of race car drivers. For years, the Unsers have made Albuquerque a famous place on the map for racing enthusiasts. Around 4 o'clock our tour was winding down and we made our way outdoors. President Ray and his brother-in-law looked jaunty in the beautiful yellow convertible as they lead the caravan of Corvairs (and Brand-Xs) to the Trujillo's lovely home: across the river, left on Coors, left on Toledo, or was that Alamogordo Street? Ray grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and hot wings while Sylvia prepared all the delicious trimmings. Isaac and Julian made sure everyone was comfortable and had whatever they needed to feel at home. Once everyone arrived and unloaded their yummy side dishes, the servings tables could hardly hold all the food. Believe me, if anyone went away hungry, it was their own fault! Storm clouds were visible in every direction but the bad weather stayed away from us. We admired the Trujillos' house, the great empty field next to the yard, and the view of the Sandias to the east. Many thanks go to Ray and Sylvia for inviting us to their home and hosting a relaxing, delicious and enjoyable afternoon get-together. It started to rain just as we were leaving - ho hum! Sometimes this summer I can't help wondering if we haven't been transported back to southern Louisiana! But then the clouds move back and I can see the distant mountains and, yes, it's still our spectacular New Mexico. In future years when we are once again in our familiar drought condition and we are counting up the number of days since the last time it rained, we will no doubt remember this stormy summer of 2006. -- Heula =CNM= MAKE A WISH CAR SHOW John Wiker Make a Wish sponsored a car show on Sunday the 20th at the Credit Union car lot. There were over 160 cars entered. There were about 30 classes to compete in. LeRoy Rogers and I represented our club at the meet... me with my 1966 Corvair and LeRoy with his Imperial. Lots of people wandering around, and with entrie fees and donations, we made over $10,000 for the Make a Wish organization. I had the only Corvair in the show, so I was stuck in the 1960-1969 Classic Car categories against all kinds of Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevies, Plymouths, Fords and Dodges. As it turned out, I took second place behind a Plymouth Belvedere that looked like it had just come off the showroom floor.
