She and Dennis were preparing to move to Woodland, California, near Sacramento, where they wanted to be closer to family members and where they planned to start their own business. Debbie and Dennis moved to Albuquerque in 1990 and joined CNM in October of that year. They quickly became enthusiastic and almost indispensable members of our club as well as becoming active in the national CORSA organization. We will always remember Debbie's contribution as chairperson of the 1996 CORSA International Convention in Albuquerque. Debbie worked countless hours organizing and preparing for the Convention and saw it through to an unqualified success. Many of us believe this was the best Convention ever. While many of us worked long hours on this major club project, there is little doubt that Debbie was the heart and soul of our endeavor. A tangible memento of our CORSA Convention is the "Vairs in the Air Cookbook" put together by Debbie, Heula Pittman and Brenda Stickler. In December 1996 Corvairs of New Mexico presented Debbie the club's IKE MEISSNER AWARD for outstanding service. The Pleaus left us to move to the Colorado Springs area about seven years ago and immediately became active in the Pikes Peak Corvair Club where Debbie served as president. Debbie's work with CORSA has included serving as chair of the Merchandise Committee. Debbie and Dennis attended any number of CORSA Conventions, often driving across half the country to attend, including this year's Convention in Detroit. Closer to home, Debbie and Dennis have been active in our series of Tri-State events in New Mexico and Colorado. We fondly remember the Pleaus' Christmas Open House where we could have a great party with great friends while listening to the afternoon Amtrak rumble by. Debbie and Dennis and Michael and Steven were a wonderful family and we in New Mexico will miss them. The Sunshine Committee of Corvairs of New Mexico is collecting donations in Debbie's memory to help with the Pleaus' expenses at this sad time. If you wish to contribute you may make a donation at our October 3rd regular meeting, or you may wish to mail a check, payable to CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO, directly to Kim Patten, 66 Kiva Place, Sandia Park, NM 87047. After our October meeting the donations will be forwarded to Dennis, Michael and Steven. Thank you. All officers were present. There were 27 members present. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. For the first time there was an American flag in our meeting room and President Ray Trujillo suggested that we start the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. After the pledge, Larry Blair mentioned that a measure had been introduced in Congress for Veterans to salute the flag with a right hand military salute instead of the hand over the heart. I don't remember if Larry said it had been passed or was in the works. I think it is a great idea. Wendell Walker, treasurer of CNM, reported that we had $443.13 in the checking account and $2,607.15 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,050.28. We had a guest attending. He was Tim Cordova, who is the editor of Southwest Motor Enthusiast News. You can usually find a copy at the Owl Cafe. Sylvan said that he had a possible guest who might make it in later. Pat Hall said that a neighbor of his has a 1966 Corvair that he has had for 13 years. Is it for sale? If interested see Pat. Art Gold will now be our Car Council representative. The big thing coming up is the Swap Meet. Volunteers are needed to help. Art reported that "Green Planet" groups are trying to get legislation that would outlaw all old cars as polluting. This misguided effort is hurting all car clubs. We need laws that will help car clubs. Check on line with SEPA. [If you google "sepa" you get, among other things, ( http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/sea/sepa/e-review.html ) and information on the State of Washington State Environmental Policy Act and the answer to the question, What is SEPA? - A state policy that requires state and local agencies to consider the likely environmental consequences of a proposal before approving or denying the proposal...] Robert Gold reported that Sally Williams, past member and past President, was driving her Corvair when a cop stopped her and said that she couldn't be driving her Corvair with a "Horseless Carriage" plate because at that time in the morning she was probably not going to a car club function... in his opinion. The officer confiscated her license plate on the spot. I don't know how she got the car home home with no license plate. Later someone contacted the DMV and was told that the officer had no right to take the plate. More information will probably come later. Maybe we need a review of just what the rules are for a "Horseless Carriage" license plate? Robert also reported that his differential that was rebuilt at the last CNM Saturday TUNA is now in his VW bus and is working great. The difference in performance (at lower speeds, anyway) with the higher axle ratio is amazing. Heula Pittman reported for the Sunshine Committee. They have bought four more "grabbers" for the Old Route 66 cleanup crews. A collection is being taken up to send to Dennis Pleau and the boys. Several members have contacted Dennis. Lee Reider and Emma Rogers are working on the annual Christmas Dinner and gift collection. The charity this year is still open. Members are reminded that any Corvair Tri-State T-shirts that they can spare should be brought in for Ruth Boydston fore the quilt or quilts that she will be making for the next Tri-State that we host. The plan for the quilt or quilts is throw size or possibly wall hanging size. Newsletter Editor, Jim Pittman, brought up the publicity that is appearing in the media about the country's energy policy and how we are going to come up with all the new ways proposed to get energy. Jim's focus was on the current fad to make ethanol from corn to use to fuel automobiles. As he said, his bachelor degree is in Physics, and unless a lot of the laws of nature have been changed, many of the things being proposed are really B.S. Quite a long discussion evolved about the effects of converting corn agriculture from food production to fuel production and many of us agreed with Jim that this may have enormous negative consequences. I always thought that hydrogen was great for a fuel, except for the large amount of energy needed to prepare, transport and store it. Some believe that the amount of energy required to make a gallon of alcohol is greater that the energy produced when it is combusted. No doubt we will hear more on this subject. Ray Trujillo passed around the pictures that have been received for the calendar. It was decided that the board would rule on which ones to use and how. All members are welcome to attend board meetings so don't feel left out! Upcoming events include the election of officers for the coming year, to be held at the October meeting. There is a full slate of candidates, but additional nominations will be accepted from the floor if the nominee has agreed to run. October 6th is the final cleanup on Old Route 66 for the year. The starting time is 09:00. A good turnout makes it quick. The following day is the Balloon Fiesta car display. Good attendance was reported at last month's activities which included the Car Council Annual Picnic, the Old Route 66 cleanup and the TUNA Saturday tech session. We mentioned that Dan Palmer's technical presentation after last month's meeting on how to replace those dim dash lights with LEDs was much appreciated. The meeting was adjourned at 20:23. -- Chuck =[CNM]= HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go to five CNMers this month: Dan Palmer ...... October 03 Sylvia Goffe .... October 16 Bill Reider ..... October 17 Erica Anderson .. October 25 Jon Anderson .... October 27 =[CNM]= MORIARTY EAA FLY-IN Pat Hall We drove our 1964 Monza coupe to the E.A.A. Fly-In and had a good time. CNM was represented by approximately 13 members and guests. There were lots of airplanes, lots of nice cars and approximately seven Corvairs. Pancakes and sausage were served for breakfast and hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. I had a ride in the little black two-seater. It was a fun little car, but we didn't wish we had it for the drive home. A big thanks to the Finches for coordinating CNM's presence at the Moriarty E.A.A. Fly-In for 2007. =[CNM]= SEPTEMBER BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 17:00 on 9/19/07 at Business Printing Service's President Ray Trujillo. Present were Ray Trujillo, Pat & Victoria Hall, Mike & Brenda Stickler, Robert Gold, John Wiker, Chuck & Julia Vertrees, and Jim & Heula Pittman. The first item brought up by Ray was the club's 2008 calendar project. Seven sets of pictures were shown around, and Ray said that he had some more on a disc from Bill Reider. It was decided that all the pictures were good and that Brenda Stickler and Sylvia Trujillo would work on the layout and have it to Ray by the 1st of November. It was decided that we will put an ad in CORSA Communique. For anyone who wants to order calendars, the price will be set for three calendars and the price will include the cost of postage. Before he had to leave for another meeting, John handed out a flyer on the "Generals Auto Rally" at Eisenhower Middle School on October 21st, a Sunday. The time is from noon to 15:00. See the flyer with Ray for more details if interested. Treasurer, Wendell Walker, was unable to attend the meeting but he sent his financial information. In the checking account we had $362.09 and in the GMAC account there was $2,619.56 for a total worth of $2,981.65. Heula Pittman reported for the Sunshine committee. Lee Reider, Emma Rogers, and Heula will get together to decide what charity we will collect for at our Christmas dinner. It will probably be Barret House again, but that information will come later. Heula also has obtained from the Pikes Peak newsletter the new address for Dennis Pleau in California, if anyone would like to write him and the boys a letter. The address is: Dennis Pleau 2679 Briscoe PL Woodland, CA 95776 There was no membership report and no one present knew of new or prospective members. Robert Gold said that he is no longer our official Car Council member and that his son Art will be taking his place. He said maybe Art was not aware that a report on the Car Council was due by the newsletter deadline. He said that the next thing was the swap meet on September 29-30th. He has volunteered CNM to supply traffic helpers on Saturday the 29th, starting at 07:30. Chuck Vertrees suggested that those directing traffic could wear our orange vests that we use when picking up trash on "Old Route 66". This met with approval, and Robert will get them from Ollie, and return them before the "Old Route 66" cleanup the following weekend. Robert said that he had read a book written by a previous Pulitzer prize winner about the 50 Worst Cars. Of course the list included the 1961 Corvair. However, the author also said that his family had a 1961 Corvair and they all loved it because it was so much fun to drive! Someone else had seen a similar feature on the internet and read many of the comments and considered them pretty trite. In other words, don't go googling this article thinking you will learn anything technically correct about "bad" cars -- you won't. Editor Jim Pittman said the coming weekend was "newsletter weekend" and that he had received from Richard Finch an article and some pictures from the Ultravan convention in Ruidoso. All the September activities will be over when this is read, so we will start with the October events. October 3rd will be the election of officers for the coming year. We have a full slate, but nominations from the floor can be made with the prior approval of the nominee. October 6th is the last cleanup of "Old Route 66" for the year. It will start at 09:00 at the usual place. Workers may decide to go for breakfast afterwards -- or not. The next day, Sunday the 7th, is the Balloon Fiesta Car Show. To get in, meet on Edith Boulevard at the Alameda overpass no later that 07:00 AM. You will miss most of the traffic, get into the Fiesta for free and get a great parking place to see the balloons. Steve and Rita Gongora will again host the November 10th CNM Potluck and Auction at their place of business "House of Covers" starting at 17:30. This is always an enjoyable event for all the family. Bring your junk, err, "treasures" and a potluck dish and prepare for a fun evening. December will have our Christmas Party at the KAFB officers club on Sunday the 2nd. Time and other details will be given later. The EAA Fly-In at the Moriarty airport on September 8th was well attended by CNM members. Ray said he saw at least 10 members, but Pat said he thought there were about 13 present. It was enjoyed by all attending. It is not known if any went on Sunday the 9th. See Richard's article for more. Ray said that although he will not be President next year, we can still continue to meet at Business Printing Services for our Board meetings. This is great news for those of us who live or work nearby. The meeting was adjourned at 17:37 and all then enjoyed the Pizza and Sodas that Ray had ordered for us as his outgoing President's surprise party. It was much appreciated by all present and the resulting quality of conversation has hardly been surpassed at a CNM event. Several of us expressed our thanks at the excellent job Ray Trujillo has done for us during the last two years as President. -- Chuck =[CNM]= MECHANICALLY UN-INCLINED Ray Trujillo Hello Everyone! It's hard to believe we're into the last quarter of 2007. With that in mind please remember our club still has a few more activities to participate in before 2008 arrives. We begin with our annual election of officers for the upcoming year at our next membership meeting. We have a full slate of candidates for all positions according to our nominations chairperson, Sylvan "The Arm Twister" Zuercher. You know that sounds like a great WWF wrestling name, either that or maybe it would be better suited for an altogether new cartoon super hero name. On October 6th we'll have our last Old Route 66 clean up for this year so if you haven't made it out to one yet here's your chance. This clean up will begin at 9:00 AM. On the following day, Sunday October 7th our club will participate in the International Balloon Fiesta Car Display and if you'd like to go we'll be meeting at 7:00 AM at the Edith and Alameda underpass. A few weeks later on October 26th-28th the Great Western Fan Belt Toss & Swap Meet will be held in Palm Springs, California. During the month of November Steve and Rita Gongora will host their annual Auction and Potluck evening. The Auction and Potluck will occur on Saturday the 10th of November at 5:30 PM at their House of Covers business. Then we'll close out another successful year by having our Christmas party at the Kirtland AFB Officers' Club on Sunday December 2nd at 11:30 AM. So there you have it, you just need to reserve some time on your calendar so you can enjoy these upcoming activities. Speaking of club activities and since this is my last month as president of this great club I'd really like to thank all of you for the tremendous support during these past two years. For the most part, I believe we had good attendance at many of the scheduled events. Your CNM board and I really did try to have at least one activity a month on the calendar for you. In addition to our annual events such as the Bosque del Apache Tour, Anniversary Dinner, Museum Car Show, Tri-State Meet, NMCCC picnic, State Fair Car Show, Auction & Potluck night, and the Christmas Party, we also scheduled visits to the International Balloon Museum, the Unser Museum, the awesome garage tours at Jay Hertz' and our very own Cary "Wonderboy" Hubbard's, an Isotopes baseball game, the Moriarty Fly-In, and the Balloon Fiesta Car show. Also, we continued our monthly breakfasts, began quarterly Old Route 66 clean-ups, had an Econo-run on the Turquoise Trail, put on a memorable 30th Anniversary Tri-State Meet in Montrose, had two CNM summer BBQ's -- one hosted by Mike & Brenda Stickler and the other by my wife Sylvia and me. Another activity we started was the very popular Tuna Saturdays. Our membership meetings were very well attended and we had great participation by members who did tech sessions or presentations. Wow! Now that's what I call a very active club and I can't thank all of you enough for making it happen. Without your help and participation none of the above activities would've taken place. It's very easy for me to see why CNM has survived and thrived over these thirty-three plus years. We have involved members and clearly the most dedicated and superior editor in Jim Pittman. So give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done and keep up the good work. Okay let's move on now. For those of you who have followed my articles during these past two years I thank you for being good sports about it. Some of my stories were Corvair related while others were not. Now if you're willing to endure one more story then resume reading, if not then you're off the hook. Hopefully I didn't lose too many of you after saying that but let me begin by telling you that this story is Corvair related. Around three years ago, Debbie Deck, who was a former member of this club, worked next door to our print shop at Sandia Safe and Lock. Well, one day I drove my 1964 Monza sedan to work and she didn't know I had a Corvair so she comes over to my shop and tells me she has a 1962 Monza Convertible and that she used to be a member of CNM. Debbie and her husband Ron were planning on restoring the 1962 convertible but when Ron got a job that was going to have him out of town a lot they were just unable to find the time to take on the project. She told me she had tried to sell the car but had no takers, so if I wanted it I could come by and get it. Before I decided to take it I told Sylvan about it he said he wouldn't mind teaching me about working on Corvairs and that I should bring up the idea of this car being a possible club project car. Well, I brought up the idea at one of our membership meetings, thinking that it would be a great way for any of our members who wanted to learn more about working on Corvairs to have the opportunity to learn. In addition to Sylvan's offered expertise, Bill Reider also stated that he could lend his knowledge as well. So I thought great, I'll get the car. It was decided that one Saturday a month we would get together to work on this project and if you look back to your CNM newsletters from December 2004 though December 2005 you'll see it was listed as an item for anyone interested to attend. Only a few members attended the first session and after that the project basically became a private Tuna Saturday for me, myself and I. During the first year both Sylvan and Bill gave their valuable expertise on overhauling the engine. During the second year of this project it was Bill teaching me about rebuilding the transmission and the many other items needed to make the car run again. Things were going along nicely and I was really learning a lot about working on Corvairs. As we were about to start the third year of this project in January 2007 it was revealed to us by doctors that my oldest son Julian had been diagnosed with cancer. After the initial shock of being informed, doctors told us that his cancer was quite treatable and highly curable especially since it had been detected very early. It was shortly after this news that I knew that I should complete this car and give it to Julian for his birthday in late September of 2007. I informed Bill about the situation and what I had in mind. Bill said we would definitely give it our best shot to have it finished by his birthday, so from that point on we worked on it frequently. Well, our once a month Tuna Saturdays turned into twice and sometimes three times a month sessions in order to get it done on time. Over the last nine months it seems all I've done is work at the print shop or on the car project, but the good news is, Bill and I got the car ready in time. The other good news is that on Saturday September 22nd my son Julian celebrated his 21st birthday with lots of friends and relatives and a BBQ at our home. Julian's doing fine and even better now as we surprised him with the freshly painted and rebuilt 1962 Monza convertible. I'm sure Julian won't ever forget what he got for his 21st birthday. Let me just say I'm incredibly grateful to both Sylvan Zuercher and Bill Reider for tutoring me over the span of this project. Also let me say that without the gracious giving of time by Bill Reider during the entire project and especially over the last nine months I would never have been able to complete such a project myself. Thank you Bill and Sylvan! It was an experience of a lifetime for me to learn from both of these Corvair wizards. What tremendous members these two gentlemen have been to CNM for over thirty years! Normally, I like to close my articles by saying I'll see you at the next membership meeting, but this month I'll be unable to attend. Instead I'd like to say it's been an extremely great honor to me to serve as your CNM president. Thank you for the opportunity and I'll look forward to seeing you soon. Long live CNM! -- Ray (Now imagine me signing off in Robert Redford fashion, many of you know what I mean by that.) =[CNM]= 2008 CNM CALENDARS Brenda Stickler For the next six weeks Sylvia and I will be working on the calendar layout and design for CNM's first "Year at a Glance" Calendar. It has been decided by the board that we can use the great photos by club members and we plan to include a New Mexico backdrop to the Calendar. Special thanks to all who contributed pictures and to Bill Reider who gave us some Corvair/CNM graphics to fill in the Calendars. Start thinking who would enjoy having one of these authentic CNM Classic Calendars at their office or home, knowing your love for Corvairs. This is a fund raiser for the club. Each Calendar is $3.00 each. We know the "Word" will get out to other clubs and we are willing to ship them out in Three-packs for $13.00. If someone needs more than three shipped to one address just add $3.00 plus $1.33 for each calendar. (Example 10 Pack of mailed Calendars with postage and handling is $30.00 plus $13.30 equals $43.30.) We will not ship out orders for fewer than three. Calendars will be sold at the November, December and January club meetings. (No shipping and handling fees or minimum order if you pick yours up at the meetings.) Payment can be accepted in the form of cash, money order or check. Make checks out to CNM with a note of number of calendars ordered. (You will have to talk to Wendell if you want to trade a Corvair for a box of calendars... not sure what his stand is on that!!!) Save a special place on your wall; we think these will be a unique and fun way to help CNM's club kitty. The club tries to alternate between sites East of the Continental Divide and West of same. This year the Rally was held at the Circle B RV park in Ruidoso Downs, NM which is just across the highway from the famed All American Futurity Horse Racing site east of the village of Ruidoso. This was the 3rd time the club has held a rally at this same location. At other times, the club has had rallies at Carrizozo, NM and Durango, Colorado. In recent years the Annual Rally has been held in places such as Amana, Iowa and Pella, Iowa. For Gayle and me, this was the easiest Rally we have ever attended, since it was only 50 miles or so up the mountain from our house here in Tularosa, NM. We drove the short trip on Tuesday, September 4th and stayed for 3 nights. We decided not to stay for the whole rally which usually ends on Sunday morning. Gayle and I had prior plans to attend the Moriarty Air Show and Car Show so that we could see all the folks from the EAA and from the CNM group and spend time with them too. When we arrived at the Circle B RV park, we were disappointed to see that there were only 3 other Corvair Powered Ultra Vans in attendance at mid-morning the first day of the event. One was from Kentucky, one was from Pennsylvania and one was from Tularosa -- us. Later that day another Ultra Van from Idaho showed up, having had engine problems which were eventually solved, and another one showed up from Arizona, for a total of only 5 Corvair powered Ultra Vans in attendance for the event. Another really nice converted Ultra Van arrived from Florida. It had been converted to Chrysler V-6 power with many of the donor car (van) things such as the complete dash board and the full transaxle and rear axles taken from the 1990 Chrysler/Plymouth Grand Voyager Van. On the second day, a prototype Oldsmobile V-8 powered factory unit, with Ultra Van name tags and Chevy step van windshield, arrived towing a 1964 Corvair Monza Coupe. I did get some flack for saying earlier that it seemed that there were somewhat less than 12 to 18 active members in the Ultra Van club these days. Attendance figures at the Rally seemed to bear out that fact. There were a total of 24 individuals at the height of the rally with about 5 individuals who attended not being club members. That left only 9 or 10 couples who were dues paying members. At a couple of the sessions, the incoming and past club presidents were heard to express concern over the low attendance figures. I tried to suggest that the club should consider re-opening membership to only RV's that were Corvair based vehicles, since this is a CORSA club, and not some other brands of RVs, but that idea does not sit well with those in high places. At mid-morning we drove back down the hill to our house in Tularosa and picked up our Siamese cat who had hidden out on us at the start of the Rally, and at around 5:00 PM we gassed up again and began the 4 hour drive from Tularosa to the Moriarty Airport. We had a very pleasant and smooth drive to the Airport and arrived there at 9:20 PM and did not see a soul at the airport. We chocked the wheels and proceeded to go to sleep. The next morning at daybreak I got up to brew a pot of coffee and feed our two cats some tuna and I noticed tents under airplanes with folks sleeping in them. They had flown in before we arrived and had already set up camp. So, we were not as alone as we thought. At breakfast, which started at 6:00 am, we saw Jim and Heula drive up in their 1965 Monza coupe and they joined us for a breakfast of pancakes and sausage with orange juice and coffee. I will let Jim fill in the rest of the day's events. However, later that evening we were joined by fellow Ultra Van owners and drivers, Dan Palmer and his wife who had driven to the air show from their home that was just 15 or so miles from Moriarty. While our wives compared notes on Ultra Van interior decoration, Dan and I spent about 30 minutes going over the differences in our respective Ultra Vans. Dan and his wife had to leave to attend the Glider club dinner and Gayle and I decided to rest up in our Ultra Van after a busy week. We stayed another night at the airport, this time with about 15 to 20 tent and RV campers around us. We woke on Sunday morning to drizzling rain and decided to drive in to Moriarty to have an omelet for breakfast. At the diner, we met a woman who had inherited a bunch of Corvair parts in a divorce. She was eager to sell (give away?) these parts. It seems that wherever we go, we always meet Corvair people. Not a bad thing!! -- Richard and Gayle Photo captions: 1. Editor's note: Apparently the the little guy in the back of my head who does the news- letter thinks we should re-cycle. That is, re-cycle articles from the past to put in the present newsletter! This fantasy draws heavily from the August 2000 article. Now as then, don't believe everything you read.] YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT Jim Pittman Saturday dawns clear and humid from last night's rain. I'm so tired from my week's work at the University that I don't think I have the energy to pick up trash today. Maybe I can just go down and meet the gang and be a reporter and take some photos and then go home and work on the newsletter. I start up the '65 Monza and drive down and meet the gang and take a lot of photos as they suit up. But do I then leave to go home and work on the newsletter? Well, no-o-o-o-o, I can't just leave. So, I find myself putting on an orange vest and getting a supply of plastic bags and riding down to the I-40 bridge with the rest of the guys and gals to start pickin'. Okay, I guess, no newsletter homework for me this morning. We have done this trash pickup routine in heat and in cold, in wet and in dry. We have done it with wind so rambunctious you could hardly get a bag filled because the wind would blow your plastic bag around, twisting the opening shut, or else blow it around the other way, spilling the lighter stuff out, or blow your hat off and carry it to Texas. Today it would have been nice to have just a teeny little breeze, to help keep away the heat, but no-o-o-o-o such luck. Just the sun baking down, still and hot as can be. I fill up one bag and start on another. Broken beer bottles poke through the plastic and trash starts escaping and I have to stop and double-bag. These are sorry trash bags. At this rate I'll need more bags. Where's Ollie's van? There it is. Darn, the back door's shut and locked. Where's Ollie? Don't see him. Can't get more bags. I'll just pack the stuff in more as I fill my last bag. Now I'm near where a big road machine is moving gravel from one pile and dumping it onto another pile. Wonder if they learned how to do that in the Army? When the driver dumps the gravel, there is a billow of dust. I notice that now a breeze has come up. Wow, wouldn't it be nice if the breeze would blow the dust the OTHER way. But no-o-o-o-o, it heads right for me. I get to choke in the dust until I can get out of the way. I finally get some more bags from Ollie and start pickin' again. Over there is the mother lode of all trash. Bend over, move a step, bend over, another step. Pretty soon my bad knee is complaining and this bag's about full. I haven't finished this zone of detritus but I've gotta stop a minute. When I stand up I'm pretty light-headed. Sun stroke? Heat exhaustion? No breakfast? Guess what, I left my canteen of water locked up in the car. Although I remembered to fill it and put it in the car, did I remember to bring it with me? Well, no-o-o-o-o. Well, I'll just sit down and rest a few minutes. No shade anywhere, unless I walk up to the bridge and get under it. Nah, too far... I see a little bush. If I sit down close to the bush I'll get some shade. I sit down. How many years have I lived in New Mexico? Do I remember that all the plants by the roadside in New Mexico have stickers? Well, no-o-o-o-o. Brush aside the stickers... ah, there's a piece of old tire tread to sit on. Good. Out of the sun now, not too uncomfortable. Take off my hat and gloves. Now there's a little breeze and it feels really nice. What's that I hear? Sounds like a backup beeper? It's a road grader and he's BACKING up the shoulder of the road. He's BACKING toward me? Good thing this bush is not right on the shoulder... hey, he's BACKING right toward my bush! Grab my hat and gloves and jump out of his path and watch him go by. The driver sees me. Is he impressed? Absolutely no-o-o-o-o. Okay, now he stops and heads down the road again. He's letting down the blade. He's scraping some excess asphalt that's near the edge of the road. He's heading right toward three or four trash bags our guys just put by the side of the road. Is he gonna stop before he hits them? Amazingly, no-o-o-o-o. The blade hits the bags. They slide along in front of the blade. Maybe they don't rip too badly. Now he stops and backs up for another run at that asphalt. I walk down the road toward the bags while he's backing up and heave what's left of them behind the guard rail. The driver doesn't acknowledge me at all, he just makes another run to scrape the asphalt off the pavement. I wisely stand BEHIND the guard rail to watch this. Okay, now the excess asphalt is smoothed out and the grader goes elsewhere. Do I have enough energy left to walk down to where the rest of the guys are, or should I just wait for them? No shade here. I'll walk. I come up to Del just in time to see him pick up a scrap of paper, look at it, fold it up and put it in his pocket. "What didja find?" I ask. "Must be a page from a porno magazine," he says. "It's a picture of a naked lady and a boy in a swimming pool." "Let's see it," I say, but he just gives me one of those marvelous copyrighted Del grins and ambles off without saying another word. I had always thought Del was the kind of guy who would share, but no-o-o-o-o, I guess he's not. We all finish up our trash picking and meet Ollie back at the starting point. It feels so good to be done with one more session that we can almost forget how hot and tired we are. We turn in our nail-sticks and orange vests and have some of Ollie's cool Corrales water from his picnic jug. Some of us tell about our more interesting finds: a dead coyote, lost Ford emblems, broken Chevrolet S-10 spoilers, a full and unbroken (but thoroughly sun-baked) six-pack of Dos-Equis beer, uncountable styrofoam boxes from Sonic or McDonalds, lots of those tiny bottles of Yukon Jack. Someone lost an HP scanner, its pieces scattered along the highway. Del doesn't tell what he found and I don't ask again. Soon we are done bragging and are ready to leave. I drive back home and rest up for a while before getting back to work on the newsletter. Fast forward seven days -- it's now the following weekend and I happen to run into Larry. He couldn't go to our Route 66 trash day because he had to get ready for a special elk hunting trip in Colorado later this fall, so I tell him about it. I mention Del's porno picture of the naked lady and the boy in the swimming pool and how he wouldn't let me see it. "Tell you what," says Larry. "I'm going up to Del's place to help him get the drive train out of his van this afternoon and I'll ask him about it." Sure enough, later that afternoon Larry stops by my place in his giant red pickup on his way home. "Well, we were working on getting the engine out of that van," says Larry. "I waited until Del went back in the house to get another tool or something and I asked Kim about the photo. She didn't know anything about a picture of a naked lady and a boy in a swimming pool, but she thought it would be a big joke to go find it and give it to me. Then when Del missed it, he wouldn't have the nerve to ask her if she'd seen it." So when Del came back out, Kim sneaked into the house and went upstairs to look for the photo. She found it under a stack of classified Los Alamos documents on Del's desk. She had a laugh, then secretly brought the photo out and gave it to Larry while Del was under the van disconnecting a final forgotten cable. Larry put the photo in his truck. "Kim said you might want to put it in the newsletter this month, with your report on the Route 66 cleanup," Larry tells me as he rummages through his briefcase. "Wait a minute," I say, "Our newsletter is a family magazine. I can't publish a picture of a naked lady and a boy in a swimming pool." "Don't worry, it won't be a problem to put it in the newsletter," Larry assures me. "Here it is." "Wow!" I say, "I guess you're right. Del was right, too. I'll scan it into the computer for the newsletter. This will make a great story about Route 66." "Great!" says Larry as he gets into his giant pickup. "Nobody will believe it, though." "Sure they will," I say, "the photo will be the proof." So Del has to share with us after all. If you want to see his porno photo of the naked lady and the boy in the swimming pool, turn to the last page of this Newsletter. "But, how did Del know the naked lady was a lady?" I ask Larry. "I don't know," he says. "Maybe Del has more experience with these things than we do." =[CNM]= MANY THANKS Ruth Boydston As many of you know, the plaque with all the recipients of the SAINT FRANCIS OF CORVAIR AWARD was presented to me at this year's Tri-State Meet in Monte Vista. Some of them feature nice photographs of very nice cars. The newsletter from The Silicon Valley Corsa showed up in the mail and my first thought was, Here's another terrific Rampside that someone has restored! Looking closer I saw that the Rampside belonged to none other than CNM's own Larry Hickerson. Congratulations to Larry for having a hit at yet another car show! =[CNM]= NMCCC CAR COUNCIL REPORT Art Gold September's Car Council meeting was again well received by the club's representatives of Cary Hubbard, Robert Gold, and yours truly Art Gold. After the enormous gavel fell, the meeting got underway with the customary treasurer's report. Good news is to be had from this report; there is money in the account, around $5,000+! However, the council states that the account will most likely go into the hole, because of expenses for the upcoming swap meet. Now, on to the old business. The main topic of discussion consisted of the All Clubs Picnic, held at the pristine Villanueva State Park. There were a myriad of "thank yous" offered during the meeting. Most notably, Bob Agnew, Joyce Clements, the Rickshaws, and the Lady Rickshaws. There was a raffle held, which collected a whopping $300 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico. This reporter gives gigantic thumbs up for this effort. The remainder of the old business informed the attendees that the vice president dispute has been settled. The incumbent vice president, Michael Maestas, will continue to perform his tremendous duties. There was also discussion of the Council's website. At the time of the meeting, the website had yet to be updated. Upon further review by your modest reporter, the website is appearing to be complete and pretty sharp. If you would like to browse the site, it can be found at this web address: http://nmcarcouncil.org/index.html On to the new business. There was nice banter concerning the upcoming swap meet, to be held in Los Lunas. The council thought it best to send around a sign-up sheet for various committees for the meet. Our club signed up for Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 am (morning shift). All volunteers receive a lunch voucher, which is tremendous, since the event is being catered by the Luna Mansion, YUM! Remember, the swap meet is being held Friday-Saturday-Sunday September 28th - 30th, at the Morris Field (just off of Highway 314) and that's all for the new business. Nearing the end of the meeting, just before the gavel fell, a topic of grave importance was introduced. This topic dealt with the impending doom to the old car hobby. There has been recent speculation that there will be upcoming legislation to promote a greener alternative to automobile transportation. The council encouraged the clubs' representatives to get the word out about this brewing issue. The dilemma would be that once a bill is passed, hindering our precious automobiles from being seen and enjoyed, then it would be rather difficult to overturn. Conversely, placing a law on the books now that would somehow block this type of legislation from occurring would tend to ensure the hobby for generations to come. For more information on this issue go to this website: http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=61695 to read about it. Right the good fight! Upcoming events of note: State Fair Car Show, September 23rd, 2007 Balloon Fiesta Car Show, October 7th, 2007 Until next month, concluding this report, your Car Council Rep, -- Art Gold PHOTO CAPTION: At left, after our September meeting, we discuss future plans including the photos for the 2008 calendar project. =[CNM]= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - October 2000 - Volume 26 - Number 10 - Issue 301 On the cover, our Galles sponsor Joe Trujillo poses with several CNM members at a Chevrolet Car Show at Galles. Steve provided a photo of a "Corvair" bicycle. It was mid-engine, not rear engine, unless you had really long arms and sat on the back fender. Your editor took meeting notes. Sylvan welcomed guests: Larry Hickerson, Dana Doyle and Glen Gollrad. Wendell claimed a sum of $6019 in the treasury. He said that Ilva's condition was much improved from a month ago. Mark Martinek reported on doings of the Car Council. Jerry Goffe proposed a garage tour to a location in Santa Fe. Hurley remarked on all the neat car shows so far this summer. The All-Clubs Picnic was not well attended. Mark Domzalski said little was happening in CORSA but we could read about the convention in the Communique. Tarmo said yes, he had read the article on his way down from Santa Fe tonight. This prompted someone to ask whether he could drive, read, look at the scenery and talk on his cell phone at the same time. Tarmo replied that I-25 traffic gridlock provided the opportunity to do all these things and more. The board meeting was held at House of Covers, per secretary Chuck, back from Alaska with a fresh Aurora Borealis tan. There was news about new CNM license plates, new CNM shirts, new CNM business cards, a possible Route 66 project, and the upcoming State Fair show. The CNM web page needed updating, but the Pleaus had moved to Colorado and so far we didn't have a new webmaster. We were invited by the Santa Fe Vintage Auto club to go on their Frostbite Tour instead of build our own Aspencade. Anne Mae reported on doings of the CNM Ladies and several projects were in progress. Steve reported on a very successful campout at Ruth Boydston's cabin in the Pecos. Richard Finch told how he and Gayle (in the middle of their move from California to Tularosa) made a trip to Albuquerque to obtain a Monza convertible. They bought Dennis Pleau's 1964 car and towed it home behind their Brand-X -- actually, a 1991 Cavalier convertible. Tech tips this month included Dennis Pleau's rebuttal to a Click & Clack article in which the loudmouthed duo made less-than-accurate slanders against Corvairs. We also learned about camber change during cornering, a good substitute for a Delco Remy coil (Accel Performance #8140) and using antiseize on your spark plugs... you do not want to cross-thread or over-tighten a spark plug and have to install an insert! Fourteen Years Ago - October 1993 - Volume 19 - Number 10 - Issue 217 The cover showed a late Corvair with a Jaguar V-12 installed in the front, yes, in the front. Bill McClellan reported that we mailed 14 newsletters to New Mexico addresses and 28 to out-of-state addresses. President Del ran the meeting. Will Davis said we had $1,228 in the kitty. New members were Scott, Deann and Andrew Kimble, owners of a 1967 Monza. Activities coming up: a tour to Red River, a car show at the Atomic Museum, a car show at the State Fair, an Aspencade in October, a Funkhana in November, the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and the Christmas party. We had a great time at the Villanueva campout. Five CNMers went to a car show at Peralta. We were about to have our first planning meeting at the Pleaus' residence to prepare for our 1996 CORSA Convention. Kay and Tarmo Sutt previewed our Aspencade to Embudo Station. Dennis reported on the San Jose convention, including decisions made about the 1996 convention. Debbie provided our first article on convention plans, including a "Vairs in the Air" logo design by Bill Reider. LeRoy reported on the State Fair show; there were seventeen Corvairs. Elliot Knapp's 1906 one-cylinder Cadillac was at this show. First, Second and Third were Tarmo's 1965 Corsa, Bill Lawless' 1966 Corsa turbo and Bill Reider's 1965 Corsa, coupes all. Kay's 1964 convertible got best engine, Mary Lou's 1963 convertible got best paint and Jeff Newman's 1961 Rampside got best interior. Twenty-one Years Ago - October - 1986 - Volume 12 - Number 10 - Issue 133 The cover featured a Corsa dash with racing steering wheel. A famous scene from a John Wayne movie reminded us it was time for elections. Clayborne ran the meeting and we had $856 in the bank. We planned to have our November meeting in Santa Fe. The library van was ready to bring into town where we could do some body work. Bill and LeRoy reported on their trip to the CORSA convention in Grand Rapids. Jim outlined the history of our newsletter, from Mark Morgan's first issue in December 1974. Kristin Romer reported on the scavenger hunt, won by new members Pam & Paul Clark. Billiken showed us his military surplus radar detector. Twenty-eight Years Ago - October - 1979 - Volume 5 - Number 10 - Issue 49 The cover showed Corvairs at the State Fair (one was a Fitch Sprint) and inside were fourteen more photos. Ruth Boydston's 1964 light blue Monza convertible won best of show. We ordered full-color 1980 calendars from the North Texas club. There was more discussion about CORSA's 100-percent solution. Carl Johnson reported on the Detroit CORSA convention. Les Campbell, a former secretary, wrote about life with a Corvair in Connecticut. Ike Meissner wrote about water in gasoline and what to do about it. =[CNM]= =END=
