There were 28 members present. Treasurer Wendell Walker was not present because of an accident earlier in the day. (I called him the next morning and he is all right except for some soreness and stiffness. When I talked to Wendell he gave me the total in the CNM treasury as $2,872.51.) The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. There were no new members to introduce, but we did have a guest. Jeff Roberts was visiting. He has the 1967 Corvair that used to belong to Terry Price. It is a coupe (don't know if it is a Monza or Corsa) with 110 engine with rebuilt auto and carbs. Paint and interior are very good. He would like to sell it to someone who would appreciate it. The Car Council report was given by Art Gold and Cary Hubbard. The Car Council has gotten someone to take care of their web site, so hopefully it will stay current. The swap meet in Las Lunas went great with over 300 stalls sold. The city really is wild about the swap meet since it brings in lots of revenue in general for the city in room rentals and meals served plus other commerce. They want to know the schedule for the next 12 years so they can plan. They intend to try and help control the dust and other things. There is a committee set up to work on next year's Museum Car Show. The last one did not go real well. Larry Blair said that one of the things they needed to work on was the trophies. Last year they were so cheap they must have cost 50 cents each. Before last year the city provided the trophies but last year the Car Council was responsible. The annual picnic went great and they are looking for someone to do the picnic next year. Heula Pittman said that the Sunshine Committee had nothing to report other than that Emma Rogers had called all CNM members to remind them about the things we will need to bring to the Christmas dinner to support The Barrett House. Jim Pittman reminded everyone that anything for the newsletter must be in his hands by Friday the 9th so it can be finished by early next week. Bill Reider will take care of printing and mailing the newsletter. Jim mentioned the obituary for Don Heath who passed away recently and Steve Gongora spoke more about Don's career in New Mexico. Steve has placed the obituary on his web page. Jim then thanked Robert Gold for a "world class" report on the trip to the Fan Belt Toss. The report, with photos, are on Jim's web page. Ray Trujillo brought in the new 2008 CNM calendars and everyone admired them and we gave a big hand for Sylvia Trujillo and Brenda Stickler for making this project happen. Quite a few were sold by the end of the meeting. An ad will appear in the December Communique and hopefully we will start to receive orders. Pat Hall suggested some possible changes in the TUNA programs and this was followed by discussion. Basically, there'd be two kinds of TUNA sessions: one to just learn how to do some basic kind of tune-up or maintenance on your Corvair, and one where a member could get a specific item of work done to a Corvair and a donation to the club treasury would be expected. Yes, this is for members only. There will be more discussion at the next board meeting. Upcoming events include the Auction and Potluck this coming Saturday (10 November) at House of Covers at 17:30. This is always a wild affair. Members were asked to bring their auction-able treasures and a potluck dish. Sunday December 2nd will be our annual Christmas dinner at 11:30. Again this will be at the Officers' Club at KAFB. To get your car on base you will need registration, proof of insurance and photo identification. Check in at the MP station at the Wyoming Blvd entrance. Then take the first left after entering and drive east to the Officers' Club. Steve Gongora will provide the MPs with a roster of club members, but you will still need the documentation mentioned above. Be sure and bring your gifts for Barrett House. Rita mentioned that for next year we may need a new sponsor to go on base. Vickie Hall has volunteered to put together our Progressive Dinner in January. She is looking for hosts. If you are available to host part of this, please call Vickie at 865-5574. She hopes to get three locations that are reasonably close together. One year we went from Placitas to Rio Rancho to Cedar Crest, a long way! (On the first leg of this trip, Bill & Lee Reider found Julia & Chuck at an intersection of two unmarked dirt roads way out in Rio Rancho as we were both trying to find our way from Placitas to Wendell's house.) February 10th will be a garage tour set up by LeRoy Rogers. It will be the Sunday after our meeting and there is more information on the web page as well as elsewhere in the newsletter. We have had our last cleanup on "Old Route 66" for the year. Thanks to Ollie Scheflow for his continued organization of this activity and thanks to those who have helped clean up trash over the years. I have agreed to set up some type of a rally for April, and I asked about the possibility of a short stretch of unpaved road. The response was mixed, so the village of Juan Thomas is probably out, but I have some other interesting roads in mind. Probably the rally will involve a couple hours drive with questions along the way (maybe photos?) and then meet afterwards for a late lunch. Robert Gold said that the Fan Belt Toss did not have as many vendors as some of those in the past. However, the cars to see were something else. The California car scene is just amazing. They are steps above what you see from other areas of the country. See Steve's web page for photos. Larry Blair reminded everyone that November 11th is Veterans' day and there will be a large affair at the Veterans' Center on Louisiana including dedication of the complex. There will be a veterans' lunch on the 12th at Cervantes Restaurant and any veteran that would like to go should call Larry. Steve Johnson told us that the B-17 "Liberty Belle" will be at Double Eagle Airport for the next three months for overhaul. He invited us to go out to see it -- not to get a ride because it will be in various stages of disassembly, repair and re-assembly. All expressed interest in going to see it. We'll schedule it in as an activity. The meeting was adjourned at 18:48 and many admired the various newly cleaned and refurbished parts that Tarmo brought to show us. =[CNM]= BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES Sunshine Committee Seven CNMers celebrate birthdays this month. They are: * Dick Cochran December 5 * Ruth Boydston December 7 * Isaac Trujillo December 9 * Jimmy Arellanes December 16 * Lube Lubert December 21 * Bernadette Gongora December 22 * Sara Gold December 30 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to each of you! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go to: * Elizabeth & Mark Domzalski Dec 11 * Barbara & Gordon Johnson Dec 18 * Sylvia & Jerry Goffe Dec 27 * Lori & Joel Nash Dec 31 =[CNM]= STICK TO VAIRS Michael Stickler I hope everyone had a great time at the annual CNM Auction at Steve & Rita's "House of Covers." Thanks Rita, for the cookies you brought to the club meeting for your reminder announcement! In years past we have found the deals terrific and of course the proceeds go to the Club Treasury. Also, we are fortunate that the Gongora family sponsors the Christmas Party at the KAFB officers club. Please, come enjoy this fine brunch and enjoy some of the most delicious food found anywhere. We are also helping an organization this year, Barrett House, with either gifts for youths or women's pajamas. Don't forget, to get on the base you must have registration & insurance documents for your vehicle. We broke ground on our garage this week, so we most probably will have it completed and ready for a Garage Tour for 2009. I was not disappointed that this house came without a garage. It has always been a dream of mine to build one of the biggest, gol-durn garages this side of the Rio Grande. It took from Spring to Fall just to get the plans drawn and through the Corrales approval process. We just saw our contractor pouring the foundation this week. By Spring it will be great to drive in the first of many Corvairs that need working on. Of course, Vickie Hall will start us out this New Year, with a Progressive Dinner in January. She needs both Homes offered to host and Cooks to bring food to those homes. How about that, we sold half of the first run of our Calendars. My first lady says we have gotten our first Out of State order. THIS could put CNM in Albuquerque on the Map!!! See you at the board meeting and our December meetings. Thanks ----- Mike =[CNM]= NEW MEXICO CAR COUNCIL REPORT Cary A. Hubbard This meeting at the Car Council was interesting as usual. All the familiar faces and the neat cars at The Old Car Garage, are always something fun to look forward to. The meeting was called to order and we discussed the old business. So far after the swap meet and a few other events the Council is up 1,500 dollars, which is good considering that the Council was somewhat in the hole as far as earning went last year. The website was also a big discussion, in light that we really don't have anybody to fully maintain it. So Joyce had found a guy that does a lot of internet work and maintains non-profit and other organizations websites for a small fee. A motion was made to have the guy work with the website as it is and just update and maintain the information. This will mean that there will be better updated information for show dates and even show pictures. After six months the Council will evaluate how it is going and see what we want to do from that point on. The swap meet went very well, probably one of the best they have ever had! Thanks to the Corvair Club and the Old Car club for all their help. All of the remarks from the Vendors and Customers were very positive. The city of Los Lunas liked having us down there this year so much that they asked the Council for the dates of the swap meet for the next twelve years! We will not be able to do that much but we will work hand in hand with them for years to come. A motion was also made to donate one thousand dollars to the City and ask them to put it towards dust control of the park. Since everything down there was free we all figured this is the least we could do. Bob Agnew asked that a committee be formed for the Museum Car Show, since last year's show didn't seem to work as planned. The idea of pre-paying for your spot is kind of being pushed aside, it is going to be discussed about how to efficiently make all of it work for next year's show. Get with Bob or Joyce if you would like to be on the committee. Who wants to host the All Clubs Picnic next year? Calendar of events for the 2008 year will be published in January. And also talked about was the Martin Luther King parade, they would like a couple of convertibles for the parade. For information check out the website or get in touch with Joyce. Art and I will have two months off. We'll have our next Council meeting in January. -- Cary =[CNM]= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | December | January 2008 | February | | | | | | : : : : : : 1 | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | : : : : : 1 2 | | 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | | 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 | | 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 | | 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 | 27 28 29 30 31 : : | 24 25 26 27 28 29 : | | 30 31 : : : : : | : : : : : : : | : : : : leap year | ============================================================================ Sun 2 Dec 11:30 AM Christmas Party - Kirtland AFB Officers' Club Bring cash please! CHRISTMAS DONATIONS TO BARRETT HOUSE Emma Rogers & Lee Reider This is our last reminder of the donations for our Barrett House donations. We believe that every member has received a phone call by now concerning our Christmas project. We urge everyone to start collecting these items and take them with you to the Christmas brunch at Kirtland Air Force Base on Sunday December 2 at 11:30 AM. We thank everyone for their participation with this worthy project. Here's an overview of what The Barrett House does: It is transitional, temporary, short-term housing for homeless women and their children, boys to age 12 and any age girls. The Barrett House is a facility that assists women with a place to live while either going to school, finding a job and working, while receiving medical care or finding permanent housing. It is a nonprofit, non-denominational organization and is located at Constitution at Eubank behind Carl's Jr. in Albuquerque. NEW books are needed to give children whenever they leave the facility. Both new and gently used books are needed for the facility's library. This year there is a big need for pajamas for the women. The larger sizes (large and up) are most needed. We are asked to provide toilet items for the women too. Suggestions include: shampoo and conditioner, bath soap and body wash, deodorant, tooth brushes, tooth paste, hair brushes and combs. Toys for both boys (up to age 12) and for girls (any age) are needed as well. Gifts for girls of any age would be appreciated too. Suggestions are: costume jewelry, make up and cases, hair accessories, etc. We urge everyone to start collecting any of these items; anything you can bring will be appreciated. Take them with you to our Christmas brunch at Kirtland Air Force Base on Sunday, December 2nd at 11:30 AM. =[CNM]= MODEL CAR KIT FOR PLEAUS Heula Pittman LeRoy Rogers has donated a model Corvair car kit to give to Steven and Michael Pleau as a Christmas gift from our club. Brenda Stickler has a Christmas card for everyone to sign and will circulate it at the auction this weekend, at the Christmas brunch, and at the next membership meeting. She will then mail it to the Pleau boys at their new home in Woodland, California. Steven, Michael, Dennis and Debbie hold a special place in our hearts. =[CNM]= GARAGE TOUR, SUNDAY 10 FEB 2008 LeRoy Rogers Our 2008 garage tour will be held on 2/10/08 (Sunday) at 1:00 PM at the Lewis Antique Auto and Toy Museum, 905 U.S. 66, Moriarty, N.M. It is at the far east end of town on the north side of the street. There is no fee to tour the museum, but there is a donation jar. For those who want to have lunch prior to the tour, we will meet at Billy Bob's, 2710 Highway 333 (old Route 66) on the south of the street at 12:00 noon. For further information call LeRoy at 294-0623. =[CNM]= PROGRESSIVE DINNER IN JANUARY Vickie Hall I'm Heading the Progressive Dinner committee. The dinner will be held in January. Anyone who is interested in hosting this event, please contact me at 865-5574 and please leave a message if I don't answer. We need three host homes. We have two at this time but they are far apart and I'm trying to get three host homes that are closer together in order to shorten the driving distance to go to all three the evening of the dinner. Thank you for your consideration -- Vickie =[CNM]= 2008 CNM CALENDARS - UPDATE Brenda Stickler Well, Ray & Sylvia surely did an incredible job on the Calendars!!! Thanks from CNM for all that hard work. We had our first sales at the November CNM meeting and about half of the first run of calendars were sold in two hours! Ray and Wendell will have calendars available to sell at the board meetings, at the Club Meetings and at the Christmas party. If after those events, there is someone you want to get a calendar for Christmas, you can get them from either Ray at Business Printing Solutions or from Wendell at $3.00 each. To have one mailed to you, see the order form in the newsletter or on Jim's web page. Our sales will go through January '08. We will start advertising that mail in orders for calendars need to be postmarked no later than January 31st to guarantee shipment. A mass E-mail will go out to clubs that we are friendly with, next week. This E-mail will include the great order form that Sylvia designed for us. (Her gift to the club!) As Calendar Chair I want to thank all who have supported us. We hope this fundraiser will be a fun way to help the club kitty. Mike and I are very proud of the Club Calendar and can't wait to share it with our friends and family members. (We hope you do the same!!) WE DID GOOD!!! Thanks to all who helped -- Brenda =[CNM]= BEAM US UP CORSA! Brenda Stickler Finally today I called the office of the Mayor of Taos. No one ever returned my three calls to the Chamber of Commerce in Taos. It turns out Information for our great state information line had given me a "dead" line that no one was answering, but the recorder was still intact. By the December CNM club meeting we should have the tourist packet from Taos with hotel accommodations, points of interest and of course the "Earth Ship Homes" a green development that could teach us something about global warming. (Or, how wonderful is would be to have a house that looks like a space ship.) Kay Sutt has agreed to be our "Legs" and do some running up to Taos if indeed the club selects Taos for the 2009 Tri-State Event. Please, let me know if you have any special contacts in Taos or if you travel north a lot. Kay would be a perfect person to be our liaison for our club and the town of Taos. If we can get her any members to keep her company and support during this, that would be nice. We should finish this process before February so that at 2008's Tri-State we can give exact information on our plans for the 2009 Tri-state. Thanks - Brenda =[CNM]= GREAT WESTERN FAN BELT TOSS - OCTOBER 2007 Robert Gold Some of the things that attracted me to our local Corvair club in the early 1980's were the many activities that took place during the year. The car shows, dinners, econo runs, and car tours were a lot of fun. What's more they provided the opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and appreciation for the Corvair while getting to know others who also liked the cars. As the years went by I became aware of bigger activities that took place on the regional and national level. It was sort of a rite of passage to progress from local get togethers to events that attracted fellow Corvair enthusiasts from other areas of the country. I felt that in order to really know the Corvair I needed to attend these events. To this end I've been fortunate over the years to attend several Tri-States and two National Conventions. However, I always felt that my participation was not complete until I attended the Great Western Fan Belt Toss held annually in Palm Springs, California. The fan belt toss can best be described using the 60's term, "a happening." It is a combination of car show, swap meet, and cultural event all dedicated to glorifying the Corvair. I was always jealous of my fellow CNM'ers who made that 800 mile trip and returned with their treasures discovered in California. I don't have to be jealous anymore. This year, thanks to my understanding wife Anne Mae, and the fact that I am now retired, I was able to attend that event in Palm Springs. I made the trip with two other CNM'ers, my son Art and Geoff Johnson. We caravanned with Dave Langlois and his two sons. I first want to say that I'm really happy Dave took his "dually" GMC. If he hadn't, one of us may have had to walk back to make room for the things we bought. We were somewhat apprehensive about making the trip this year since California was experiencing major wildfires. Luckily for us the fires were on the other side of the mountains from Palm Springs, so all we had to contend with was some minor smoke in the air. Geoff pointed out that the smoke didn't look much different from the normal pollution that you see in the area. That made me really appreciate New Mexico's blue skies. Anyway, we made the trip in about twelve hours and after a night in the motel headed out to the park where the swap meet was taking place. I didn't use my stop watch, but I estimate that the time between our arrival on Friday morning and Dave's and Geoff's first purchases was about 1.2 milliseconds. I think some people are born with certain genes that allow them to see bargains. It took me and Art a bit more time before we found some treasures. I have to say that simply looking at all those Corvair parts was lots of fun. By the time we left both vehicles were fully loaded with all sorts of parts. Dave even found a whole engine to take back. I still regret not buying that rust-free 64 Spyder convertible. Oh well.... The swap meet was fun, but I think the real charm of the event was our experiencing the California spin on Corvairmania. The car show that was held on Saturday had cars that simply took my breath away. One car was nicer than the next. I couldn't count all the convertible turbos or the 69 convertibles or the cars with the $10,000 paint jobs. These guys really take their Corvairs seriously. I also saw two Greenbrier vans that almost caused me to turn to a life of crime to get them. Then there were those V-8 guys. They roared into the show like an invading army. So much power and so much bling. It was quite a potent combination. I can't overlook the truly unique convertible I saw. Anyone who reads HOT ROD knows about the "rat rod" movement. To purists I'm sure they don't think much about the primered and rusty bodies of these cars. However, I for one, was impressed with the black bodied early convertible that was entered in the show. I had a very nice conversation with the young man who was building it. His enthusiasm was refreshing and gave me hope for the future. Well, I could go on and on about this stuff, but I guess Jim would like to have room for somebody else's article in this newsletter, so let me end my description with this note. There was an individual there who worked in the styling section for Chevrolet while the Corvair was being developed. It was a privilege to talk to him and hear his stories. I never knew that they made a convertible in 1960 -- it was for the wife of a Chevy exec. Some people get all the neat stuff. This man also mentioned that he worked on the 1959 Impala and that, no, the rear fins did not give lift to the back end at high speeds. Oh yes, another person of note who was there was Cal Clark. Yep, he is that Cal Clark who keeps our cars on the road. I have to admit I felt a letdown when I realized it was time to go. After all those years of anticipation it was hard to leave and return home. I suppose the nice thing is the knowledge that I finally got to be there for Great Western Fan Toss. I hope that if you haven't made the trip you take the time in the future to attend. Just don't buy that 64 Spyder. I want that for myself. -- Robert Gold =[CNM]= TECH TIP: WINTER STORAGE Steve Goodman The DRIPLINE - Pikes Peak Corvair Club - Vol. 32, Nr. 1, October 2007 With winter approaching (which means salt/sand/mag chloride) on the streets, many chose to place their Corvairs in hibernation. If you plan on only storing the car for the months of, say, November to March I will offer the following suggestions: Wash the car thoroughly including the underside, then drive it dry. While driving for the last time fill the gas tank full. Also pour a couple of cans of HEET or DRY-GAS into the tank. This is alcohol and will keep the moisture content of the gas down through the months. Carefully and completely vacuum the inside of the car, especially if you have had food in the car. Little furry things are attracted to food particles during the winter months. (See more comments about little furry things below.) If you have lots of energy you could wax the outside of the car too. Check the glove box and trunk for anything that might spill or decay while sitting. Also air all of the tires to 35-40 psi, this will keep the bead from leaking in most cases. Now the car is home in the garage. After shutting the car off, remove the GROUND CABLE from the battery. If you are concerned over the battery condition, a trickle charger can be hooked up to the battery and the cord plugged into the wall a couple of times a month for a day or two. DO NOT overcharge the battery, and check the water level in the battery regardless. Now for a couple of warnings: DO NOT leave the emergency brake pulled for the entire time period. Even though we don't have a great deal of humidity, the brake shoes can stick to the drums if allowed to sit engaged for several months. Block the wheels if it is a powerglide car. ALSO if a powerglide car, place a drip pan under the transmission. Many times the fluid will leak out if sitting for a long period of time, no need to have it soiling your garage floor. Of course a drip pan or a carpet runner under the powertrain of all of the cars will usually contain the small oil drops that occur. Now back to those furry little characters: mice will wreak havoc with your car. They will nest in the upholstery and chew the wiring up. Mice can slip through the tiniest little cracks and Corvairs have large cracks, the heater system and fresh air system come to mind. Place DECON around the car on the floor of the garage -- many folks use moth balls, both around the car and inside the car. The smell will go away quickly in the spring with some air freshener. If possible, buy an inexpensive car cover, just the thin fabric kind will work. It will keep the dust off the paint and will also cushion the possibility of someone brushing against the car. Also another little creature in this area, miller moths seem to leave deposits on paint while they fly around in the spring; the cover will help protect the car. Even though you have unhooked the battery you can still go out and hook it up quickly and start the engine. If you chose to do this through the winter DO NOT let the car just sit and idle. Move it onto the driveway and back or better yet, drive it around the block when the streets are dry. Then just unhook the battery and cover the car again. The above suggestions are for storing your car inside. If you have to use a carport then a better car cover would be suggested BUT buy one that allows moisture to soak through the fabric. DO NOT get a waterproof cover or wrap your car with a tarp. Moisture will condense between the tarp and the paint and the paint will be ruined very quickly. Also it would be better to simply remove the battery for the winter and keep it somewhere warm, again with a trickle charger if need be. Have a safe winter and everyone will look forward to seeing your Corvair in the spring. =[CNM]= IS YOUR CAR DRAFTY? Steve Goodman Denvair News - Rocky Mountain CORSA - November 2007 Do you notice that with cold weather approaching how things change inside your car? For instance, during warm weather you never felt that draft going up your pant leg, huh? How about a breeze blowing from under the dash that ends up making your hands cold? Late models seem to suffer more from the dilemma. Look at the fresh air doors behind the grills under the dash. The rubber seal will fail and no longer shut off the fresh air. Removal of the door is easy and the pieces are available either locally or from the vendors to replace the rubber seal. Also the entire piece is caulked to the inner fender and if the caulking leaks air will find a way in over the top of the assembly. After removal of the door there are two 5/16" sheet metal screws that hold the entire assembly to the body. Use either rope caulk or RTV to restore the seal. Last is the speedo cable grommet, it is amazing how much air can come from such a small hole but when it is cold air it feels like a blizzard. The grommet, again, is available either from a parts car or a vendor. You don't need to suffer winter inside your car with these simple fixes. =[CNM]= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - Dec. 2000 Vol. 26 - Nr. 12 - Issue 303 On the cover are photos from the tour to the Gilman Tunnel in the Jemez, a board meeting and the 2000 Tri-State. For our November meeting the Galles Chevrolet room was out of commission so we gathered at a restaurant back room. We were glad to see Ilva Walker at the meeting. Wendell reported a sum of $6015 in our treasury. Mark Martinek's report on the Car Council focused on the recent swap meet. The CNM ladies planned to meet in November at Debbie's then go to a winery for a tasting. Our Dec. regular meeting would be greatly abbreviated and held at the Christmas brunch at Kirtland AFB. Steve Gongora planned to take over managing the club's web site from Dennis Pleau and at the board meeting we discussed just what we wanted to see on our web page. The Meissner Award committee reported the recipient of the award for this year had been selected and plaques had been ordered. There was discussion of whether the award should be continued as few current members of the club knew Ike. Should the meissner and Boydston awards be combined? Stay tuned. An article by Del Patten gave examples to illustrate why he and Mr Murphy are very good friends. Mark Martinek gave us his famous story about trudging up and down a mountain (okay, a "hill") in the Jemez to call AAA for help with Mary Lou's stalled 1964 Monza convertible. Richard Finch sent us an article on restoring a 1964 Monza complete with an up-to-date aftermarket air conditioner. Virtual Vairs tech tips told about a schedule of maintenance for mid-sixties cars, a way to calibrate your speedometer at home and a lot you might need to know about wheel and tire sizes for corvairs. And finally, the issue wrapped up with an index of most of the articles from the year 2000. Fourteen Years Ago - Dec. 1993 Vol. 19 - Nr. 12 - Issue 219 "Merry Christmas and Happy New year" proclaimed the cover. President Del Patten ran the meeting and Treasurer Will Davis said we had $1371 in the piggy bank. New members Clint Collins ('65 convertible) and Rick Dragoo ('63 convertible) were welcomed by Sylvan Syercher. We discussed next year's events; what would our members like to do? Our Christmas dinner was to be a pot luck, held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, venue no doubt arranged by Chuck Vertrees. We had a great Funkhana and Del said it was really fun and quite a challenge. Eight people drove; Chuck reported their times; Steve got the best score; Debbie and Kim were close behind, trailed by Dennis, Bill, Joel, Carl and Del. Editor Jim suggested ways the Club could improve; naturally he suggested that everyone should write a newsletter article. He pointed out that at all our gatherings we seem to talk endlessly about things we do with our cars, and if we'd just write down these experiences we'd have great material for the newsletter. Alas, since it's much easier to talk than to write, a lot of good stories are forever lost to posterity. An index to the 1993 newsletters completed this issue. Twenty-one Years Ago - Dec. 1986 Vol. 12 Nr. 10 Issue 135 On the cover we said once again, "Merry Christmas" and we had hardly any meeting minutes because the last meeting was held at the Furr's Cafeteria in Santa Fe and Club business was not at the front of our minds. Bill Reider organized a photo contest. President Clayborne looked back over the past year and told us some of his tribulations as a diesel mechanic. The Club voted to sponsor a special award, the IKE MEISSNER AWARD, to recognize outstanding Club members who followed in Ike's footsteps as supporters of the Corvair hobby. Bill Reider's technical column told about finding cracks in a rear torque arm. He recommended checking all the rubber bushings then getting a good four-wheel alignment. Specs for such an alignment were provided. An index for 1986 articles completed this issue. Twenty-eight Years Ago - Dec. 1979 - Vol. 5 - Nr. 12 - Issue 51 On the cover we provided the solution to last month's crossword puzzle. We had $313 in the bank. Calendars for 1980 were available. We planned to go to Bella Vista for our Christmas dinner. We thanked Ed Black's Chevrolet for sponsoring our Club. An excellent technical article by our German engineer, Markus Rothmeyer, told us how to install a 3.89 differential in a late Corvair. Markus also told us about his experiences driving around New Mexico at Autobahn speeds in a 140-Corvair-powered VW van. After the 1979 newsletter index Jim said that his two years as editor had been fun and educational but required a lot of time. (The year 1979 was BC ("Before Computers") and everything was TYPED on a TYPEWRITER if you can believe that.) Jim thanked Ike for his excellent technical articles and Sylvan for copying, folding, stapling, stamping and mailing the newsletter every month. =[CNM]= ENCHANTED CORVAIRS NEWSLETTER - INDEX FOR 2007 - CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO EVERY MONTH OR AS AVAILABLE: Dues Due ....................................... Staff Photographers DEC =[CNM]= TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED Jim Pittman The "Corvair Decade" extended from 1960 to 1969, a time that some would argue represented the peak of American automotive development. We enthusiasts for 1960s Chevrolets in general and Corvairs in particular sometimes find ourselves trying to re-live the world that existed forty years ago, but that world is gone forever. Seven years into the twenty-first century, the automotive environment is vastly different from what we knew when our Corvairs were new. There are far more cars on the road, new cars have unimagined safety and convenience features, and gasoline is becoming ever more expensive. We even have to worry about the impact of millions of new automobile owners in China and India on the world price of petroleum products during the next few years! For those of us who like to tinker with cars, Corvairs offer something no modern car can: an opportunity to be a "Saturday back-yard mechanic" just like we (or maybe our fathers or uncles) used to be back in the sixties. Nearly all the parts we might need are readily available, and a person of moderate mechanical ability can learn how to do the minor jobs of modification or tuning or maintenance that can keep our Corvairs running even better than they did when new. With a strong club and with so many talented mechanics, our TUNA sessions offer all of us the opportunity to learn how. We live in the twenty-first century with all its modern gadgets: computers, the internet, cell phones, instant world-wide communication and travel, and with all its modern problems: smog, overcrowding, inflating prices, instant world-wide communication and travel. Maybe our older and simpler Corvairs can serve as a kind of time machine to let us travel back to a simpler era, if only for a few hours. Perhaps our Corvairs can serve as a kind of therapy for the "mid-life crisis" of coping with the stresses and challenges of the modern age. =[CNM]= This issue of the newsletter is full of photos taken at various club events during the year.
