The Club will mail in your National Dues when you renew, provided that you send us the renewal form from your CORSA Communique! =[CNM]= NOVEMBER 21ST BOARD MEETING MINUTES Brenda Stickler The Board meeting was called to order at 5:25 PM. In attendance were Ray Trujillo, Wendell Walker, Pat Hall, Mike Stickler and Brenda Stickler. Pat Hall mentioned that the TUNA sessions should start in the Spring. There are still no guidelines for donations for the club, from the person whose car gets worked on. Wendell said the auction gave us a profit of $231.00. The total for the club's treasury is now $3,103.51. The only committee report was from Brenda Stickler. We have sold over the fifty calendar mark and will have about 35 calendars we can sell at the Christmas party. All are looking forward to the December 2nd Christmas Party. The Ike Meissner Award nomination form will be in the January CNM Newsletter. That award will be presented at the Club's anniversary dinner in March. We now have three hosts for the Progressive Dinner, and a date, Saturday January 26th. The dinner will start at Lee & Bill Reider's home, then Ollie and Mary Alice Scheflow's home, then dessert at Wendell Walker's home. A sign up sheet will be available at the December meeting for cooks to assist the three hosts. We hope that starting times and locations will be available at the December meeting. Heula Pittman is exploring the possibility for going to the County Line Restaurant on Tramway Blvd. in March for our 34th anniversary dinner party. We will need to decide on a convenient Saturday evening in March, wherever we decide to go. Even though there were not a lot of members present, this group had a positive feeling about having the 2009 Tri-State in Taos. Research is showing us that we can get fair prices in advance for the hotels. We also have great support from the Tourist Bureau who want to help us with the car display and banquet locations. Wendell said we should table the discussion on members' CORSA dues being paid through our club treasurer for the time being. Since an ad in the CORSA Communique would be free, our small group thought is would be fine for Jim to offer an updated CD of CNM Newsletters at $10.00 each to help support CNM. (Jim says he has still received no feedback on the CD.) Finally, we discussed changing the Auction/Potluck to a Bingo Night at House of Covers. (No problem with the Gongoras). The bingo pot would be split between club and winners. Pizza would be ordered and we could profit by "Selling by the Slice" and also selling salad and drinks. We might also have either a Craft Raffle or Silent Auction on NEW handmade type items -- maybe desserts? The meeting was adjourned at 6:15. -- by Brenda Stickler for Chuck PHOTO CAPTIONS: COVER: A frozen-over beaver dam and pond during the winter of 1966-67 in Alaska. There were 24 people present. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Wendell Walker gave the report that CNM had $512.98 in the checking account and $2,644.75 in the GMAC account for a total of $3,157.73. He also reported that we made over $200.00 at the potluck/auction in November and that we came out $3.00 ahead at the Christmas Brunch. There were no new members to introduce, however, we were able to meet Wendell Walker's daughter Kathleen, and her husband, Tim Mings. They were here for about a week visiting Wendell. There was no Car Council report because they do not meet again until January. Heula Pittman said that the Sunshine Committee did not have anything to report. She reiterated the purpose of the committee was not only to recognize birthdays and anniversaries, but to also assist members and their families who were having a problem. Illness, post operation, etc. would be a time for some food brought in, a trip to the store or other kinds of assistance. Please let the committee know if help could be made. Newsletter editor Jim Pittman said that the newsletter deadline this month would be Friday the 21st. Any articles would be appreciated since there will not be a board meeting this month. Ray Trujillo said that we had sold 57 calendars out of the 100 printed so far. This means we have passed the break-even point and any more sales would be profit. There was an ad in CORSA Communique and two out-of-state orders have been received so far for a total of 6 calendars. Pat Hall reviewed our discussions on the TUNA sessions. He said that the TUNA session could be of two types. One would be a training session for those who wanted to learn how to do a repair or rebuild. Other CNM members would assist in the project and other members could learn as well. The second type would be where a member needed a project done but didn't want to do it themselves. In this case other CNM members would do the project. Pat feels that in the second case the member whose car is being worked on should make a donation to the CNM treasury. (I think I have this right. If not Pat can correct or elaborate.) Pat also said that he thinks we could use more suggestions from the members on the type of activities that CNM should be doing. If you have ideas or suggestions, let Pat or another club officer know. Upcoming activities start with a progressive dinner on January 26th. We will start at the residence of Lee & Bill Reider for appetizers and first course type of food. Then we will go to the Scheflows' for the main course and finally to Wendell's for desserts. Since Bill and Lee live in the NE heights, Ollie and Mary Alice in Corrales and Wendell in Rio Rancho, maps will be made available. February 10th will be a garage tour set up by LeRoy Rogers in the east side of the mountains. Details will be in the newsletter. The next will be the CNM birthday dinner in March. Heula Pittman and the board have been working on this and there will probably be details elsewhere in the newsletter. The annual Christmas brunch at Kirtland AFB was well attended and we need to thank the Gongoras, Hector, Rita, and Steve, for their work in preparing this. This will be the last year that Hector will be able to sponsor our Christmas brunch at the KAFB Officers Club, and after some arm twisting, John Wiker said that he will take care of it for next December if we want to go back there. Robert Gold said that since he had been doing some of the arm twisting, he would help. Members were reminded that nominations for the Ike Meissner award are due by the February meeting, since the presentation is made at the club's Anniversary Dinner. There will be a nomination form elsewhere in this issue of the newsletter. The committee to select the Meissner Award recipient is getting organized. Bill Reider has one extra copy of the current Clark's Catalogue. If you want it, it is first come, first served. We adjourned at 19:32. After the meeting Tarmo Sutt showed us several Corvair flywheels and pressure plates. We discussed the things that could go wrong and the mistakes that could be made. One of Tarmo's samples had been rebuilt by Bill Reider in his CAR-TUNE shop. It appeared to be as sound as when it was first rebuilt. -- Chuck Vertrees. -[CNM]- BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES Sunshine Committee Seven CNMers celebrate birthdays this month. They are: Javier Gold January 9 Carolyn Palmer January 10 Steve Gongora January 11 Jim Arellanes January 12 Florence Hector January 12 Del Patten January 13 LeRoy Rogers January 20 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to each of you! Two CNM couples celebrate wedding anniversaries this month: Kim & Del Patten January 8 Vickie & Pat Hall January 18 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! =[CNM]= STICK TO VAIRS Michael Stickler Brenda and I hope that everyone in the club enjoyed the Christmas and New Year's holidays. We appreciate the hard work of the many members who helped with last year's events. We look forward to this year's exciting activities. Club members are encouraged to bring to the board of directors their ideas for any new events to be initiated for the coming year. I hope everyone can attend the Progressive Dinner this month. Many thanks to our hosts: the Reiders, the Scheflows, and Wendell Walker. We are all looking forward to the garage tour at the Lewis Museum in Moriarty in February. I surely urge everyone to come and appreciate that fine collection of cars, trucks and toys. I'm told that the lunch before the museum visit should be good too. You'll be able to sample "Billy Bob's Cajun Cuisine" just like you'd find it in south Louisiana. Speaking of garages, our garage in Corrales is built now with only the final coat of stucco needed. Well, only the "shell" is complete. It will still need electrical, insulation, sheet rock, heating and cooling work. To save money (to spend on Corvair projects) I'll finish those last few items myself. (That will be the slow part). The thing that all Corvair owners need is a good workshop to keep those forty-plus-year old cars running. CORSA seems to attract the more inventive old car enthusiasts because the Corvair needs so many design improvements. The constant tinkering on Corvairs will keep our minds sharp as we "baby boomers" age. Pity the poor Mustang owners who grow duller each year, by merely replacing parts!!! I hope to see all of you fellow automotive geniuses at the next club meeting! Thanks, Mike =[CNM]= PROGRESSIVE DINNER -- JANUARY 26th, 2008 Mike Stickler We greatly appreciate Bill and Lee Reider opening their house for Appetizers for the Progressive Dinner. We will then head to Corrales where Ollie and Mary Alice Scheflow will host the main course. It is at the far east end of town on the north side of the street. There is no fee to tour the museum, but there is a donation jar. For those who want to have lunch prior to the tour, we will meet at Billy Bob's Cajun Restaurant, 2710 Highway 333 (old Route 66) on the north of the highway, at 12:00 noon. If you are driving on Highway 333 (old Route 66) toward Moriarty, it's a large white building on the left before you get to the stop sign where you turn left then right to go into town. For further information call LeRoy at 294-0623. =[CNM]= BARRETT HOUSE DONATIONS Emma Rogers & Lee Reider The volume of donations for the Barrett House was huge this year. We sincerely appreciate all the terrific items that were brought. As usual, the generosity of our club members was great. There were several pairs of pajamas for the ladies, items of clothing for both women and children, back packs, some school supplies, toys for both boys and girls, and MANY usable toilet items. All the wonderful books were especially appreciated. Someone donated some lovely new sets of children's books. Our heartfelt thanks go to each of you for your generosity. All the folks at the Barrett House were deeply appreciative as well. =[CNM]= CHRISTMAS AT KIRTLAND AFB - 2007 Heula Pittman Sunday, December 2, was a cool and slightly windy day for our annual Christmas brunch at the Kirtland Air Force Base Officers' Club. Some of us came in our Corvairs and the rest in various Brand-X vehicles. We had a good turn out with 44 adults and two children present. Tarmo and Kay Sutt had their student from Turkey with them; there were a few other visitors as well. We appreciate Hector Gongora for arranging for our brunch once again. He has done this for our club for several years now. Our thanks go to Emma Rogers and Lee Reider for their chairing the donations for Barrett House again this year. They did an excellent job at coordinating this project and making it all happen. =[CNM]= It's true... Wendell bought a new car. It's a 2008 Honda S-2000 race car. It's a two-seater with a removable hardtop, a 6-speed transmission and more power than the Challenger. Well, as much, anyway. He's driving it to San Diego for Christmas. =[CNM]= A NOTE FROM ... ... Dennis Pleau Things are going OK here in Woodland. The store will open on the 19th which is about seven weeks behind our original schedule. We had a couple of garage sales and sold some of Debbie's quilting supplies and Christmas decorations. I still have 1300 sq/yards of quilting fabric to get rid of. I now have enough room to put the Greenbrier in the garage and try to figure out why it died. Work is going to be all consuming for the next 3 to 6 months. I'm not sure if I will be able to go to the national convention in Ventura this summer. If I'm not there the kids will be there staying with Larry & Marybeth Claypool and family. If you see them be sure to say hello. I haven't done anything Corvair related since I moved here other than joining Classic Corvairs of River City. I've attended one meeting. I was in the bay area in training three weeks ago and attended a Silicon Valley Corvair Club meeting. That was my first Corvair club so it was good to see them. I also called a few people from the church group where Debbie and I met. It disbanded in 1990. Everybody had someone's phone number and we were able to get quite a few of us together at a restaurant one evening. A lot of friends who hadn't seen each other in a lot of years so it was really good Life is moving on, things aren't great, but they aren't terrible, -- Dennis Reprinted from The DRIPLINE Volume 32, Number 2 November 2007 Pikes Peak Corvair Club =[CNM]= 2008 CNM CALENDARS -- UPDATE Brenda Stickler Well, Ray & Sylvia surely did an incredible job on the Calendars!!! Thanks from CNM for all that hard work. We had our first sales at the November CNM meeting and about half of the first run of calendars were sold in two hours! Ray and Wendell will have calendars available to sell for $3.00 each at the board meetings and at club meetings. To have one mailed to you, see the order form in the newsletter or on Jim's web page. Our sales will go through January 2008. We will start advertising that mail-in orders need to be postmarked no later than January 31st to guarantee shipment. A mass E-mail has gone out to clubs that we are friendly with. This E-mail included the great order form that Sylvia designed for us -- her gift to the club! As Calendar Chair I want to thank all who have supported us. We hope this fundraiser will be a fun way to help the club kitty. Mike and I are very proud of the Club Calendar and can't wait to share it with our friends and family members. (We hope you do the same!!) Thanks to all who helped -- Brenda =[CNM]= CLUB's 34th ANNIVERSARY DINNER IN MARCH To: CNM Board Members From: Jim & Heula Subject: March 34th Anniversary Dinner As authorized by the board, we have made a reservation at the COUNTY LINE RESTAURANT located at Tramway Boulevard and Tramway Road in Albuquerque for 45 to 60 people for Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 6:00 PM. The dinner will be served family-style, all-you-can-eat. The meal includes: three meats, home-made potato salad, fresh cole slaw, ranch-style beans, warm house bread, beverage. We selected for the three meats: barbeque chicken, barbeque brisket, barbeque sausage. Beverages are iced tea, coffee, sodas. There is a cash bar for those who wish to arrive early or stay late. The COUNTY LINE cost per adult is $ 24.00 The COUNTY LINE cost per child is $ 8.40 (under age 12) As we discussed with board members after the December meeting, the club can pick up part of the cost of the dinner. We suggest that the club pay $9 per adult and $3.40 per child, making the price to members: The CNM price per adult would be $ 15.00 The CNM price per child would be $ 5.00 (under age 12) These prices are tentative and the exact prices will be announced at a meeting and in the newsletter at a later date. Those attending should be prepared to pay our treasurer in cash at the door, or, preferably, by personal check made out to CNM no later than the regular meeting on March 5th. We propose that all CNM members (including spouse and children living at home) would get this price. A single CNM member could invite one guest at this price. Other non-member guests would pay the COUNTY LINE price. We will need to pay a deposit of $50 to the COUNTY LINE RESTAURANT by some time in mid January. This deposit is NOT refundable if we drop below 45 people attending! Before paying this deposit, we can attempt to get a head count at the January 2nd meeting, or we could phone people who do not attend the meeting. The restaurant will need an accurate head count ay around late February. Remember that essential club business at this event will be the awarding of the IKE MEISSNER AWARD for 2008. As we have done in previous years, we'll have door prizes -- members are asked to start collecting items for door prizes. If anyone has a problem with these plans, let us know. =[CNM]= Steve Goodman is now the President of Pikes Peak Corvair Club. Some CNM members may be interested to read his article from the PPCC newsletter. PRESIDENT NOTES by Steve Goodman Hello Fellow PPCC members. Should I say 'thank you' for choosing me to lead the club in 2008? Yes, I guess I should do that; THANK YOU. I believe that many of the club activities such as the second Sunday Brunch/ meeting will continue and we have good success and attendance at the meetings. I (as well as Ruth) enjoy seeing everyone after driving from Denver each month and only wish that more would attend the meetings. There are a couple of things I believe would be enjoyable to all of us next year. First off I would like to have a show 'n' tell session at the end of the meeting each month. Someone who is doing something to their car could volunteer to just quickly explain what and why they did a modification or a repair. I have gotten comments from several members that a bit of technical information shared at the meeting "would be helpful. The other piece I would like to see happen more often is a driving event. As of now, PPCC does the Tri-State Corvair meet each year and the fall tour to Buena Vista. If we could add two more, that would be one event per quarter. Instead of trying for a monthly event, some better planning on a quarterly event might come off better and have the added luxury of advanced notice for planning. Hopefully we can get some suggestions at the January meeting. Frankly I don't really feel that a meeting during the Christmas party is very handy, we will just start the 2008 year. Don't forget though, RMC has the annual drive on New Years' Day to Estes Park for brunch. I realize that is a long drive from the Springs, in the past several members have attended but it can be a fairly long day on the road. I have tried in the past to attempt joint gatherings with RMC, sometimes they seem to work (the fall drive to Buena Vista for example) but some fall a little short. Possibly in Pikes Peak Corvair Club the 2008 year the picnic gives the ability to attend both since the dates are well staggered. In fact someone could just offer to get the drive together for the RMC picnic/swap meet; that could be one of the unused quarterly events. Hopefully RMC members will attend our picnic too since the June weather will be more attractive than the September cool breezes. Another idea would be to select a Saturday morning for a breakfast get together. CNM uses a Cracker Barrel for that purpose occasionally, someone could find a restaurant near the highway and fairly equal to all (except the Denver members) and just have breakfast and then continue with their day. If it were planned in a place in Monument maybe some RMC members would drive down too. I would also like to encourage all who are on the internet to get involved with the ppcc-list. It is a closed list, only to subscribers. Garrie Fox is the list administrator, call him or email him and he will get you subscribed. Also any email from a non-subscriber (spam/ advertising) goes to Garrie for approval before sending to the list. Garrie has the ability to screen any email posts before they arrive at a PC. E-mail has become the number one way of communicating these days. You will find my e-mail address in the DRIPLINE, feel free to send me any comments/ideas. No jokes, however, I simply don't have the time. We need to say "THANK YOU" to Jon Anderson for stepping in when Debbie Pleau left office, he has done a very good job for the last several months and, in fact, I was hoping he would step into the President's job since he is so well trained. Also thanks to Jennifer Wiltrout for doing the recording secretary job efficiently and John Koll for watching our money. Paul Campbell has by far the toughest job in the club, editing the DRIPLINE. I believe the DRIPLINE is among the nicest done newsletters in CORSA. The format and print quality are very good. Paul needs your help too, send an article to him about your car or a drive you take, or something that you fixed on your Corvair. All of the PPCC members will enjoy reading of others adventures, Saying "THANKS" to Ben Benzel falls way short, his constant efforts to keep PPCC rolling cannot be written about in a few words, only to say that without Ben the club would be seriously short of where we are today. Ben, we all owe you a debt of gratitude. Pat Campbell raised her hand at the wrong time and became the new recording secretary, thank you Pat. Jon offered to remain Vice President and I will try very hard to be in attendance each month, probably the only thing to keep me away is a road closure due to drifting snow. Finally to all PPCC members I would like to say 'THANK YOU' for your interest in PPCC, Corvairs in general and your attendance to the meetings and events. I would like to see more of you show up for the meetings and events. I realize the cost of fuel and food rise all the time and hopefully it will be in each of your budgets to be present when you are able. The Country Buffet has given us the opportunity to get together informally each month, let's try to make the most of it. See you all at the Christmas party on December 9th. Reprinted from: The DRIPLINE -- Pikes Peak Corvair Club Volume 32, Number 2, November 2007 =[CNM]= BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (No, wait, it was at Milly's) Heula & Jim Kim called us to say that Del would be back from Virginia for a few days during the holidays, and we should all get together for one of our impromptu CNM breakfasts. We picked Milly's Sandwich Shop on Jefferson, thinking it would be a more convenient location for Wendell. Then for the next few days the weather man started telling us that a BIG storm was due to arrive during the day Friday and fill the weekend full of snow. As we watched the weather news day by day we became convinced we'd be snowed in on Saturday morning. Well, it did snow in Albuquerque on Friday afternoon -- a little -- but Saturday morning dawned cold and clear and mainly dry! It was 19 degrees when we left home -- the beaver on our cover would have thought it was a nice spring day. Jim was happy to see the dry streets. Sixteen of us braved the cold to go to breakfast. (Only for you, DEL PATTEN!) Once inside, we pulled tables together for the group and had a great meal with lots of green and red chile and plenty of hot coffee with, get this, Del, no chicory. There was a lot of "car talk" and not a few old tall tales to be overheard, and some of the conversations were actually not directly related to Corvair things. Cary told us about moving to the "dark side" by which he meant, he had just acquired a 1966 Corsa convertible -- all his Corvairs so far had been early models. He also showed photos of his "new" old Mercedes diesel sedan. Del told us that he was doing well, was enjoying his visit in New Mexico and would return to Virginia to work on December 30th. He also said that it was colder here than there and that they had had very little snow in Virginia so far this winter. He offered a few comments about the hassles of having to go anywhere by air these days -- it's just so nit-picky and unnecessarily time-consuming. It was a nice turnout for just three days before Christmas. I think that sometimes, a spontaneous get together works out better than one that is planned well in advance. Wendell did not show up -- it turns out, he had already left for California to visit Norman, Vance and Kathleen. Next time maybe we'll pick a location like Kokopeli's north of Cedar Crest. =[CNM]= WHAT I DO WITH MY CORVAIR Steve Goodman DENVAIR NEWS, Rocky Mountain CORSA, December 2007 In the October DENVAIR NEWS editor Eric Schakel described his street/track Yenko Stinger and then asked the burning question: "What do you do with your Corvair?" I DRIVE MINE!!!!!!!!!! I am one of the holdouts, bound and determined to continue driving my Corvairs forever. Yeah, part of that is because I have the shop, but a greater part is simply the fact that I like to drive my Corvairs. A portion is what Eric alluded to also, everyone who sees a Corvair has their own story about the car and I still enjoy visiting with folks while putting fuel in my car. Another part of Corvair ownership is the others who own the cars now; Corvair owners are typically nice people. As Eric also stated, many Corvair owners who used to drive the car exclusively have now become more civilized, having cars with cruise/air conditioning/quiet interiors and very good radios. They have 'graduated' for lack of a better term to a new car. Along with that graduation is the misspent thought that a new car is better than the old car. It won't break as often (but it costs more to fix when it does) as well as [possibly] better fuel mileage. Plus since it is new the galvanizing of the body sheet metal will resist rust, their collector car sitting in the garage is rusting away while the lights are off. Put that all together and driving the old car is almost like work. Sometimes I wonder why they keep the car, with the lack of use the car ends up getting mad at the owner and pretty soon the battery is flat and so are some of the tires. On the other side of the coin are the diehards like myself. I don't care about quiet and don't like cruise controls. I did install air conditioning in my Spyder for the drive to Atlanta in 1980 and when it quit working the following year because I simply never used it, I also didn't bother to repair it. In fact I removed the compressor, didn't need any more weight hanging off the rear of the car. I need to remove the inside pieces, I have a customer who has wanted to buy them for a couple of years now. Thinking about maintenance and break downs, the car has only let me down once in all those miles and it was because of a worn out part. I actually enjoy tightening the exhaust system, changing the oil and going around the car to check and tighten things. One particular source of constant enjoyment is tinkering with the sidedraft carb. I learn things and get ideas while swapping jets and metering rods, something I rarely do when I watch television. My Spyder has over 400,000 miles on it and it is still my preferred car for all around use. Unfortunately it shows, the body is showing some pretty bad rust and bondo cracking again. The car is still comfortable inside with the Subaru adjustable seats, and the 5 point harness keeps me behind the wheel. The best part however is the ability to 'slip' the car down the road. I always say it isn't a 'fast' car, it is a 'quick' car and is at its best on a twisty mountain road. Until the new crop of turbo cars started showing up in the 80s, it would pretty well hold its own with anything in the mountains and still today will run down most average cars. I can't say it runs down the road in complete silence either, it is so noisy that the radio can't be heard over about 35 mph. The fuel mileage isn't anything to brag about either, but it has given a consistent 18-19 mpg on the highway for its entire life. I drive the car simply because it is fun to drive. I don't think too many owners of Honda Elements can say their car is 'fun'. Functional yes but fun, probably not. The Spyder has many of the add-ons that Eric is beginning now with his "Pig" project car. Things like a small diameter steering wheel, quick steering, quick shift, heavy duty suspension, sun roof plus more makes the car enjoyable to drive for short or long distances. In addition to the Spyder I also put summer miles on the dune buggy as well as the 66 Corsa and the 68 Monza coupe even though the 68 belongs to Ruth. Speaking of high milage, Ruth put well over 350,000 miles on a 66 140 Corsa before an accident removed the car from the roads and the engine still lives in a 66 Monza that I use for a winter car. Even the old rusty Monza is actually fun to drive, it just looks so bad that it isn't fun to be seen driving it. When I fill in the sign up sheet at the meetings and it says 'did you drive a Corvair' the answer is always 'YES' because that is all I have to drive. =[CNM]= MOTOR OIL TODAY Dick Paterson Submitted by Bob Dunahugh Although obscure to many motorists, motor oil, as we have known it, has gone through a significant and important change in terms of its anti-wear properties. The common anti-wear ingredients in most motor oils consisted of zinc and phosphorous -- 'zinc dithiophosphate' or ZDDP for short. With the ever increasing concern for the reduction of exhaust pollutants entering the atmosphere, it was found that as gas engines age and wear, the rings allowed more oil to enter the combustion chamber where it was burned. When ZDDP is burned, the resulting ash degrades the oxygen sensor and the substrate in the catalytic converter reducing their effectiveness in controlling emissions. In response to this problem, the government in the late 80's, along with the auto manufacturers and oil companies, agreed to reduce the amount of ZDDP in motor oils for use in passenger vehicles. Racing oils and diesel motor oils were not included in these reductions. Motor oil today that is labeled in accordance with the API (American Petroleum Institute) as a category SM or GF4 now contains the lowest levels of ZDDP in history. This reduction of anti-wear additives has a longevity impact on cast iron 'flat tappet' motors (GMC/OLDS) that does not occur in modern current manufacture motors that use steel cams and roller lifters. As of 2006, many owners had switched to HD diesel/gas spec oils that still contained the high doses of ZDDP. However, in January 2007, tough new legislation was passed aimed at reducing the emissions from the diesel exhaust. A major component of the process involves the use of catalytic converters in the exhaust system and so the same consequences from burned ZDDP found in gas powdered converters is now inherent in diesel units. The 2007 legislation mandates the gradual reduction of ZDDP in diesel spec oils beginning Jan 1, 2007 with API classification CJ4. Owners of the flat tappet motors who want to continue using conventional oil or HD diesel oil can choose to use an additive such as GM 'EOS' (Engine Oil Supplement) part #1052367 (while it is still available -- and its future is unknown). Owners who have already switched to a 'SYNTHETIC' oil don't need to do anything as the superior make up of these oils does not require the concentrations of anti-wear additives to perform. Of particular importance is the issue of initial 'start up' and the breaking in of a rebuilt motor. This once rather ordinary procedure now requires extremely close attention, along with heavy additional levels of ZDDP in the sump to avoid cam/lifter failure and to properly begin any expectation for the service life of the motor. Steve Gongora announced that our CORSA-sponsored web site was up and running. John Wiker was a new member. Wendell reported $5710 in our bank account. We had new license plates and new business cards. Efforts of the board of directors centered on a calendar of activities for the new year. President Hurley thanked all who organized and participated in another great Christmas party at the Officers' Club at Kirtland. Billiken told us that if you have a modern high-tech car, to go up to the crest in the snowy winter you still need a set of low-tech tire chains. Robert told us about Car Council efforts to join in the upcoming 75th anniversary of Old Route 66. Anne Mae told us that the CNM Ladies group planned to meet in January. Debbie wrote a thank-you note expressing gratitude for all the great memories the Pleaus would be taking with them to their new home in Colorado. Jim provided a short history of our Meissner and Boydston awards. Bill contributed a complete price guide to Corvairs, from 1960 to 1969 and from Grade 1 to Grade 6 for all models. The top prices shown were $13,000 for a 1966 Corsa convertible, a 1968 Monza convertible or a 1969 Monza convertible. Yes, they beat out the $12,500 1962-1964 Spyder convertibles. Finally, our traditional member list showed 25 members from Albuquerque, 15 from elsewhere in New Mexico, and 13 from out-of-state. Phone Nr.s were included but not e-mail addresses. Fourteen Years Ago - January 1994 - Volume 20 - Number 1 - Issue 220 The cover listed Ten Commandments for the Car Collector. Example: "III. Thou shalt not love thy cars more than thy spouse and children." President Del ran the meeting. New members were Mark Domzalski and Greg Corazzi. Treasurer Will reported that we had $1175 in the bank; we spent $3647 during our 1993 fiscal year. LeRoy turned over a $50 check from the Car Council for our work at the swap meet. We discussed a trip to the Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge. Other suggestions included a garage tour and the Tri-State in Pagosa Springs. A talk by Stanley Degree about the Pikes Peak Race history and the Unsers rounded out our meeting. The report on our Christmas party declared it excellent. Steve Gongora won the Ike Meissner Award for 1993. At the party there was entertainment by a well-known and much-appreciated quartet. Debbie Pleau reported on committee activities for the 1996 CORSA Convention; we were getting into serious planning for the event. This issue's tech tips included how to paint a carburetor (talcum powder?) and how to install top shroud and carbs not once but twice (forgotten fan belt?) and how to nearly cut your finger off when rotating tires (Honda disc brake caliper?) in case anyone was interested. A list of members wrapped up the issue. Twenty-one Years Ago - January 1987 - Volume 13 - Number 1 - Issue 136 Our cover was another "Corvairs will take over the World" with global map. We had $921 in the bank. Clayborne described our Christmas dinner as a quiet success. Remember how Jim Arnholz was to speak to us but tall chair backs got in the way? We had to declare it a "rain-check" evening and invite Mr Arnholz back at a later time -- by then his name had mysteriously become Jim Belshaw. LeRoy was gearing up for a March auction (why don't we have these anymore?) and we had sixty-two names on our member list, only two of them out-of-state. Jim complained about mysterous vibrations in his 1966 Corsa clutch. A newspaper article noted that the book Unsafe At Any Speed was twenty years old and said that Ralph was just as critical of the automobile industry now as he was when his book first targeted the 1960-1964 Corvair. "Our society knows a good deal more about building safer machines than it does about getting people to behave safely in an almost infinite variety of driving situations," Nader wrote. "And whether motorists are momentarily careless or intoxicated or are driving normally when they are struck by another vehicle is entirely irrelevant to the responsibility of the automobile makers to build safer cars." Let's hope he didn't mean that if GM built safer cars it would be okay to drive drunk or drive while eating or using a cell phone... nah, he couldn't have meant that. Twenty-eight Years Ago - January 1980 - Volume 6 - Number 1 - Issue 52 A Corvair 95 van was our cover car. We had a slide show featuring several CNM events and the CORSA national convention. Our December dinner at Bella Vista in Cedar Crest was a great success. An article by Ike Meissner claimed "highest mileage" for his one-owner 1961 Greenbrier. Ike said he had done some 260,000 in this vehicle; the engine was upgraded at 110,000 miles and rebuilt at 190,000 miles due to a broken crankshaft. He told how he managed to rack up so many miles in only nineteen years: he used to think nothing of driving 80 miles to a movie or restaurant, and he drove 102 miles each way to work for a year. Lifetime gas mileage for this Greenbrier was 18.6 MPG and on a trip it would easily get 22 MPG. Ike said he planned to completely restore it one of these days. Unfortunately, by the time the article was published Ike had been in an automobile accident and we had lost a unique CNM member, Corvair mechanic and friend. Tech tips included how to keep pesky squirrels out of your engine compartment (thanks, Francis) and a long list of Corvair parts and where to get them (thanks, George Morin). =[CNM]= THE IKE MEISSNER AWARD the Awards Committee The Ike Meissner Award is presented annually to a Corvairs of New Mexico (CNM) member, in good standing who best exemplifies a spirit of camaraderie and fellowship, in the Corvair realm, with other CNM members and other Corvair enthusiasts.
