Present were Chuck and Julia Vertrees, Pat Hall, Wendell Walker, Jim and Heula Pittman, Mike and Brenda Stickler, Robert Gold and Ray Trujillo. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. (Actually, since we had no board meeting in December, it must have been the minutes of the regular meeting that we approved.) Wendell reported that CNM had $258.24 in the checking account and $2,670.19 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $2,928.43. Pat said that Sylvan Zuercher wanted to give a tech talk on carburetors after a meeting. Mike said that Geoffrey wanted to give a talk on how to modify your car radio so you could play your MP3 player on it. This will be after we adjourn the February meeting. Pat will schedule Sylvan's talk for March. Pat also brought up the TUNA sessions. After much discussion it was decided that the TUNA sessions should be primarily an educational thing. They will not be a session to fix a problem on someone's car unless it will be something which can be educational to members of the club. Wendell said that it is his responsibility to procure award trophies such as the one for the upcoming Meissner Award. Nominations for the award must be handed in by the February meeting and the committee will meet after the end of the meeting and decide. The name will then be given to Wendell to obtain the plaque. Heula said that the Sunshine Committee has sent out get well cards to Opal Zuercher who had surgery and is now home and doing well, to Mike Stickler who lost his step-mother, and to Sylvia Trujillo who had foot surgery. Ray said that she is doing OK and they appreciate the casserole that was brought over. We brought up the question of whether we should extend the membership in CNM and CORSA for the Manager of Galles Chevrolet, our sponsor. A couple of years ago we paid for a 26-month membership in CORSA for Vladimir Pavicevic, the Galles General Manager and it's about to expire. So, every month the CNM newsletter and CORSA Communique is mailed to Vladimir at Galles Chevrolet. Ray said that Vladimir was no longer at Galles. Mike will check and see if anyone at Galles bothers to read the newsletter or the Communique each month and then we will decide. Robert Gold said there was no Car Council report because the first meeting for 2008 will be January 23rd. It was brought up later in the meeting that there is always a possible clash between the Museum Show and the Tri-State. Robert said that Cary Hubbard is on the Museum Show committee and can get some information for us and possibly influence when it will be. We also need to find out the planned Tri-State date for 2008 from the Pikes Peak club. More about the Car Council: I receive a monthly report from them and in the one that I just received was an advertisement for "Do it Yourself Auto." This is owned by Jeremy Bustos and Alyssa Byrne who are Council Volunteers. The ad and postage for the newsletter was provided by them. What this is, is a shop where you can use their automotive lift for $7.00 per hour. They also have tools, air tools and specialty tools available. Open 7 days a week, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. They are at 6320A Domingo NE. I don't have a phone number, but their e-mail address is (doityourselfauto @ hotmail.com). I know there have been times that use of a lift for a few hours would have been great and the price seems reasonable to me. Brenda and Ray said that we have about 10 or 12 calendars left. We will have one on display for the Tri-State. There were seven orders by mail. Ray said that he did not get a lot of possible pictures to select from this year. It was suggested that it be brought up at the Tri-State that anyone who has a good picture of their Corvair, next year, send it to us and it might be used, with credit of course. By the time this newsletter is received we will have had our progressive dinner which is scheduled for Saturday January 26. Other things coming up are first, the garage tour in Moriarty arranged by LeRoy Rogers. This is on the 10th and details are in the January newsletter. Also in February on the following weekend is the tour to Double Eagle on the 16th to see the B-17 restoration as arranged by Steve Johnson. Our Birthday or Anniversary dinner will be on March 15th (beware the Ides) at County Line. The club will be picking up part of the tab. We have 53 adults and 2 children signed up so far with two more on the possible list. You must have signed up to go and paid Wendell for your meal no later than the March meeting. This is important! We also need some door prizes for this night! Also remember that this is when the Meissner Award will be presented. It might be you, so be sure to be in attendance. We will have a driving event on April 5th. I don't have all the details yet but it will be about 1 to 1-1/2 hours drive with our ending up together for lunch. There will be more details when I have them. Kay Sutt and Brenda Stickler have started to work on the 2009 Tri-State that we will host. One of the possibilities is Taos. They will check on prices. Remember that CNM needs to supply volunteers when we are hosts. Jim said that in recent months many Corvair clubs have quit mailing out their newsletters but are going to e-mail, or in a few cases, posting them on their web sites. He said that some club web sites are rather poor and not kept up-to-date, but that some are very interesting and you can really get absorbed in some of them. Go to CORSA's web page, go to "About CORSA" and go to "CORSA Chapters" and look up club web sites from there. One that really impressed Jim was the web site of the "Air Vair Group" with many technical articles on the maintenance or installation of air conditioning in your Corvair. The meeting was adjourned at 18:25 and we went out to face the bitter cold wind and make our way home. Yes, some of us (Pat, Robert) drove home in Corvair-powered vehicles. -- Chuck =[CNM]= BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES Sunshine Committee HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go to: Wendell Walker who celebrates on February 9 Two CNM couples celebrate wedding anniversaries this month. Make sure and contact Pat if you or someone you know would like to share a Corvair tip with the club members. Starting in June we will need some events planned for the club. If you have an idea, please, bring it to the meeting. We would like to see some fresh ideas for interesting events and of course it would be fun to bring back some old favorites of years past. Please note that the 2008 Tri-State date has been set for May 16-18th in Pagosa Springs. It is sponsored by Rocky Mountain Corsa of Denver. More information will follow on this. Happy Corvairing ... Ned Madsen offered views in the CORSA COMMUNIQUE and DENVAIR NEWS editor Eric Schakel wrote about 'graying club members' last month. It's a given that new members are the lifeblood of a car club. It's also generally agreed that the problem is to get and hold a new member's attention. However, no one has provided a solution to the problem. I don't know the answers either, but have a few suggestions. Let's look at the typical start for a new member: A new member is introduced at the club meeting, asked to give his/her name and describe their car(s). Immediately afterward the meeting goes on to the minutes/treasurer etc. During the break (hopefully) existing members venture over to introduce themselves, but then tend to migrate back to their favorite seats for the rest of the meeting. The new person probably feels a bit left out by all this -- typical feedback from new persons who attend is that they aren't welcomed into the "cliques." It's a pretty common gripe. Now, if the new person was given a packet of some sort, maybe a small folder or envelope with things like a copy or two of past newsletters and a schedule of upcoming events, it would help to engage them and make them feel more at home. Maybe include some facts about that particular person's cars such as production figures, and a list of other members with similar cars to show we're interested in the Newbie. Additional information might be a sheet with various website addresses of parts suppliers and VIN number decoders, etc. In general, anything to help the new member feel like the club has his/her interest at heart. What about taking an order for a name tag, with the responsible person following through by presenting the name tag at the next meeting? With something like this the new person would feel more at home and also that the club has something to offer. Instead of allowing the inductee to sit down after briefly describing the cars they could be asked "What are your interests with the Corvair and the club?" and also "What can you do to help the club?" I think that by making the Newbie understand that the club isn't a complacent group it will be apparent that the club has goals and purpose. A quick rundown of club activities, either printed as part of the 'welcome' envelope or just voiced after the introduction, will also serve to acquaint the new member with the club's various activities. On the other hand, the new member needs to be assertive too. The new person shouldn't expect everyone to come over and make a fuss, the Newbie needs to mingle with the group. It is true that there is a cliquish feel to any club meeting. Most seem to gravitate to the same chairs each month and visit with the same group too. The new person needs to jump into the conversation, at least a little bit so the oldsters feel that there is some interest being shown by the new member. I also think that when a new or prospective member shows up at either a meeting or an event, that person should be treated to the visual of seeing Corvairs, let's face it this is a Corvair club. I am not certain that we give a new member a good perspective of the club if there are no Corvairs in the parking lot. I realize of course that not everyone can bring their Corvair, when the weather and roads are bad many of the nice cars are tucked away in a warm spot and no one can blame the owners for not wanting to get their cars dirty/scratched etc. Some cars are under construction but I think the sight of cars sitting in a parking lot can only help the Newbie feel like the club is doing something. Please note that all of the above is only a collection thoughts and ideas. None of these is a sure-fire solution to the problem of getting and keeping new members or even the members that we have now. But it sure wouldn't hurt, and this is an area where a little effort might go a long way. REPRINTED FROM: DENVAIR NEWS - JANUARY 2008 - ROCKY MOUNTAIN CORSA =[CNM]= WHAT WE DO Bill Reider When a new member comes to a meeting and after his/her introduction it would be a good idea to have 3 or 4 members assigned to talk to him/her after the meeting or during the break. They could be part of the membership committee. The membership chair does some of that, but I think that it's important for other members to also take the initiative to chat with the new member. At CNM we go for coffee and conversation after the meeting. Invite the new member along. We at CNM are fortunate to have "The Care & Feeding of Your Corvair" booklet to give to each new member. That gives information on what the club has done in the past and also tells them some of the places that they can have work done and some of the part numbers they may need. I hope that we can all take a little time to welcome our new members, because they are the future of our club. =[CNM]= TRI-STATE MEET - PAGOSA SPRINGS, CO MAY 16-18, 2008 Rocky Mountain CORSA Come to Pagosa Springs, nestled in the valley of the San Juan Mountains. Thanks from CNM for all their work. We had our first sales at the November meeting and half of the first run of calendars were sold in two hours! Including mail orders, we have cleared about $90 total. We may have calendars available to sell for $3.00 each at board meetings and club meetings. To have one mailed to you, see the order form in the newsletter or on Jim's web page, but, these sales will only go through January 2008. As Calendar Chair I want to thank all who supported us. This fundraiser was a fun way to help the club. Mike and I are very proud of the Club Calendars that we are sharing with friends and family members. (We hope you do the same!) Everyone -- start looking for photo opportunities for next year's calendar project! Remember, we need nice cars and a nice background. If we want to continue this project next year, we'll need a person to chair a committee as well as talented people to put it all together. Thanks again to all who helped out this year. -- Brenda =[CNM]= OUR 34th ANNIVERSARY DINNER IN MARCH Heula Pittman As authorized by the board, we have made a reservation at the COUNTY LINE RESTAURANT located at Tramway Boulevard and Tramway Road in Albuquerque for 45 to 60 people for Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 6:00 PM. Our members should start collecting items and plan to bring them to the Anniversary Dinner. We hope everyone will come and we think we'll have a great time!. =[CNM]= PAT HALL TO THE RESCUE OR, GETTING A TITLE TO A DERELICT CORVAIR Robert Gold So, all of you know this story. You find a nice Corvair for sale. Well, OK, so it isn't really that nice, but you know with a little TLC and a few dollars you'll transform it into the car of your dreams. You talk to the current owner and he tells you he's had the car for a decade and it was "running when it was parked" in his backyard. After a while you've gotten the seller to agree on a reasonable price and then you hear the words that make you shudder, "I've got the title, but I need to find it for you." It is at this point you realize that you're not going to get a title with the car. I recently had this happen to me when I bought a 1966 Corsa hardtop. My intention was to fix it up and give it to my son, Javi, for his first car. The car was too nice at the price to pass up, but my worry was that tracking down a title would cost me almost as much as I paid for the car. I've been told stories about the time and expense that is required to title a car that doesn't have one. Estimates of the cost ranged from $200 upwards. This included MVD fees and the cost of a surety bond. I wasn't sure why the surety bond was required. All I knew is that it costs a lot of money. Some guys did the leg work themselves and some hired a specialist to do the work. I began to become discouraged. I thought maybe it would be just as well for Javi to continue to use his bicycle and forget this Corsa. It was then that I remembered hearing Pat Hall talk about how he discovered a way to get a title at almost no cost. It seemed too good to be true, but I gave Pat a call to ask him how he did it. The result was that I got my Corsa title for only a fraction of what the other guys had to pay. If you need a title and you're interested in saving money just read on. The secret to saving money is to first know where you go in the MVD system. Secondly you must understand that MVD doesn't care much about an old, somewhat rough looking, Corvair, in spite of the fact that you think it is a work of art. Most of the time when you buy your "backyard beauty" it probably hasn't had tags on it for 20 or more years. Another thing is that you're getting a good deal when you buy the car because it isn't ready to be entered in the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction. MVD feels that a car like this is not a candidate for fraud, so they don't put many roadblocks up to registering it. As Pat told me, if the car you have is not currently in the MVD computer system all they require is that the vehicle be inspected by a certified inspector to verify the VIN number and that a stolen car search be made. While Pat was talking to me I thought, this is all well and good, but what MVD office do I go to? My car isn't running so I didn't want to tow it all over town searching for the right place to go. I did go to my local MVD express and they told me (at no cost) that my VIN was not in the system. However, when I asked them what to do next they started talking about Highway Patrol inspections and surety bonds. It was time, I realized, to call Pat again and get some more advice. He said he dealt with an MVD express place in Los Lunas and worked with a nice lady named Peggy to process his paperwork. Well, Pat came up to my place and we trailered the Corsa to Los Lunas. Peggy at ASAP MVD Express inspected the car for $36.50. A day later Peggy called me and told me that the stolen car report came back negative and that I could come and get the title. I drove back to ASAP MVD Express and they gave me a title for $26.00. Not bad huh? I want to thank Pat Hall for all his help and advice. People like Pat are the reason I've enjoyed being a CNM member all these years. I also want to thank Peggy at ASAP MVD Express who made the titling process an absolute joy. Hopefully, someday soon you'll be seeing my 1966 Corsa at a CNM meeting, once I get my "backyard beauty" running and get some tags on it. I expect I'll get them from Peggy. -- Robert Gold =[CNM]= ETHANOL -- BLESSING OR CURSE? Jim Pittman On Sunday, January 13, 2008 the Albuquerque Journal's front page headlined, "GREENHOUSE GAFFE" and the subtitle asserted that some of the city's "green" claims were full of hot air. Staff writer John Fleck told how official statements from the city claiming greenhouse gas reductions and other "sustainability" successes have been exaggerated or misleading. There were examples, as well as several excuses for how and why inaccurate statistics had been released. City officials were embarrassed to have to acknowledge these errors, they claimed there was no intent to deceive, and swore they'd do better in the future. Thus it would seem that we have a long way to go before our city is "living green" to any significant extent. I was cynically thinking to myself, Government reports exaggerated? City statistics cooked? So what else is new? Then I got to an accompanying story on page A6. The headline said "City Cars Can Run On Ethanol, but Often Don't" and the story told why so many ethanol-capable vehicles were still running on gasoline -- mainly because the city's ethanol fuel distribution system has not caught up with demand. But my interest really perked up in the second half of the article which explained why maybe this was not such a bad thing. Mr Fleck referenced a recent article in SCIENCE Magazine by William Laurance of the Smithsonian Institution which said that the recent fad for using ethanol as motor vehicle fuel has led to faster deforestation in the Amazon. How? To support the growing ethanol market, American farmers cut back on growing soy so they could plant more corn. This pushed up the world price of soy. In turn, farmers in Brazil greatly increased the rate of deforestation so they could plant more soy. And, as we already know, the clearing of tropical forests is believed to be a major contributor to global warming. So, in addition to all the reasons we already had for believing our move to ethanol as a motor vehicle fuel was a really bad idea, here was a completely unexpected negative effect, backed up by no less an authority than one of the top scientific publications in the world. I immediately jumped on the internet to look up the SCIENCE article. Alas, it was not available to the public but only to paid-up members the American Association for the Advancement of Science. I had to take the word of secondary sources. If you get on the internet and google "ethanol fuel" you will find more than an earful of the pros and cons of making fuel out of corn or sugar cane or switch grass. It's not a simple subject to research, and I have the feeling that at every turn there are plenty of individuals and organizations that are happy to lie about it -- both ways. How does one sort out the truths and half-truths and lies from all the verbiage? Who was it who said, regarding solving a crime, "Follow the money"? Does that principle work in the ethanol-as-fuel case? Maybe. Think about who benefits from a wholesale increase in ethanol production. You and me? Hardly. We will be paying $3.00 a gallon for fuel that will take our vehicles 34% fewer miles than the equivalent volume of gasoline. Our grocery bill? Don't count on it. If more corn gets diverted to make fuel, then all the groceries that have a high corn content (and there are many) will go up in price. The environment? Not with all that extra fertilizing, cultivating, harvesting, distilling, hauling and storing of corn and its products. Corn farmers? Well, maybe, although they are already subsidized by the government and there are fewer and fewer small, independent farmers. Ah, what about the big agriculture businesses? Now we are getting warm. Do these big companies contribute millions to both political parties so our legislators will pass laws favorable to them? Nah, they wouldn't do that. Would they? Since our congress and our executive and possibly our courts are full of people who have no education in and no appreciation of science and technology, it seems unlikely that we will be following a sound scientific path in this case. If we had all the time in the world and the luxury of going back and starting over from a path that failed, we could do a gigantic experiment. Set up half the country to run on E85 fuel, and set up the other half to continue with gasoline and see which half went broke or starved or was polluted to death, and which half didn't. Alas, we can't easily do experiments with society -- we have to try to predict the effects of policies we think up, and then go with those that seem to have the best chance of success. Or, maybe, we just need to look at which policies will bring the most money to those with the most power. Lee and Bill Reider, along with Lee's sister, hosted our first course at their home in Albuquerque. Yummy appetizers including deviled eggs, meatballs, little sausages and little quiches awaited us along with a big pot of hot coffee. Julie and Chuck Vertrees, Brenda and Mike Stickler, Geoff Johnson, Sally Williams, Sarah, Javier, Anne Mae and Robert Gold, Carolyn and Dan Palmer, Rita and Steve Gongora, Kathy and Larry Blair and Jim and I were in the first gathering. Everyone brought delicious goodies and the buffalo meatballs and stuffed dates deserve special mention. Just after darkness fell we set out for Corrales (the evening traffic was great fun) where Mary Alice and Ollie Scheflow hosted us in their beautiful home. Leslie and Kevin Sullivan joined us there. Inviting aromas of food filled the house, along with a gorgeous assortment of casseroles, salads and warm breads. Next we drove to our third destination (and third city) of the evening -- Rio Rancho -- to the home of Wendell Walker. His dining table was quickly loaded with a huge assortment of goodies that would soon satisfy many a sweet tooth fantasy. Since this was the last house on the agenda, some of us declared that we'd have to stay until the food was all consumed! Some of us came to our senses, however, and left a considerable amount for Wendell to save for next week. Each house we visited was alive with discussions among us about upcoming events such as the 2009 Tri-State we plan to host in Taos. Tidbits of views of the upcoming presidential election could occasionally be heard (which I tried to avoid getting into) and of course, there were always fresh details of the latest Corvair restoration projects going, or at least planned. May our intrepid mechanics be forgiven for embellishing the tales of their long-ago engine overhauling exploits. The twenty-six CNM members enjoyed a terrific evening together. We especially thank our gracious hosts, the Reiders, the Scheflows and Wendell, for inviting us into their homes. We really appreciate Wendell, as he was nursing a "bad foot" and probably had no business walking around on it. A strong rumor informs us that Carolyn and Dan Palmer would like to have us out some time this summer for a meal and for a showing of Dan's airplanes -- some of them are Corvair-powered. They live in Tijeras on Juan Tomas Road where, as Carolyn says, it's guaranteed to be cooler than it is in the city! Maybe we could make it a kind of "Pot Luck" affair where club members could supply the food. Let's hope the rumor develops into a working plan! =[CNM]= LETTER TO THE EDITOR -- 27-DEC-2007 Garrie Fox Subject: Re: The January 2008 CNM newsletter is available From: gfox80915 @ yahoo.com Date: 2007-Dec-27 12:00:23 MST To: jimp @ unm.edu Jim, Great Edition of CNM Newsletter! Thank You. I read with interest your info included on ZDDP in current engine oils and have been trying to tell people, after testing Mobil 1 in the 1960's, to use it in Corvair or any other four stroke IC engines. I am sure you receive the PPCC DRIPLINE and our current edition has Mobil's response to my Corvair engine lubricant question... have been using it strictly in all vehicle/equipment engines since 1974 when I found it was in AAFES military gas stations in Europe. Very good that you published Dennis Pleau's letter update as well. I listed and sold their house here in 36 hours at the highest price paid in their subdivision as of that time for 2007. We had great fun with the Pleaus over the years and I have Debbie's 1963 white 900 coupe resurrected and using it for daily driver; have too many licensed and insured Corvairs now... must sell one or two! Regards, Garrie Fox TECH INQUIRY RESULTS FROM MOBIL/EXXON OIL Garrie Fox After using Mobil 1 15W-50 for 33 years in my Corvair and VW engines, I asked Mobil for an update on engine oils that would serve us well in our Corvair engines. The Tech Recommendation message is below. I also have a chart of all their engine lubricants that I can attach and send by email if you individually ask. This list does not allow attachments. I had picked the first one listed years ago and still use it in all my air cooled engines (snapper mower engine only lasted 25 years (!) and then I re-engined it. Just switching the Pinzgauer (which has a Daimler Benz air cooled engine) over to all Mobil 1 products, engine lube and gearboxes. The 15W-50 pours at -49 degrees F, but I have never had to try starting engines when using it below -29 degrees F. No Problems, though! Engine cranked like it was summer temps. We had two Billiken cartoons this month, one resolving to produce 12 new cartoons this year, the other lamenting the loss of Oldsmobile from GM's lineup. Billiken artist and founding member Mark Morgan provided a short history of Oldsmobile and Plymouth which for many years were major American automotive nameplates. Wendell said we had $5812 in the bank. Mark Domzalski reported that the 2002 CORSA Convention had been approved for Flagstaff and nearby clubs would be asked to help. Mark's term as CORSA president was due to expire in July and no replacement was on the horizon. Debbie Pleau was appointed chair of CORSA's merchandise committee. Larry Blair was planning a tour of the Big-I project as well as a presentation on adding a gasoline heater to your Corvair. After the meeting we had a presentation on the history of Route 66 by our guest, Sue Mann. Steve Gongora planned a presentation on CNM's web page and how it worked. We didn't know how many members were able to browse the web. Richard Finch invited us to Tularosa for an Ultra Van mini-convention. Among other attractions, the participants planned to see White Sands and the Space Center in Alamogordo. Tech tips this month included perennial favorites: carb synchronizing and setting ignition timing. Detailed instructions for installing a headlight relay were provided from Virtual Vairs. Maybe you don't know why you'd want a headlight relay? Ask one of our experts at one of our meetings. Fourteen Years Ago - February 1994 - Volume 20 - Number 2 - Issue 221 We had three 1965 Corsa convertibles on our cover. President Del presided. Treasurer Will reported that we had $906.86 in the bank. New member Steven Jay Pleau joined on 12/30/1992. Visitor Dan Motter showed us cast brass belt buckles he made. Did we want to order Corvair buckles for the Tri-State? Several suggestions for our 1996 convention were brought up. Club merchandise included a second edition of Bill Reider's "Care and Feeding of Your Corvair" book. We planned to vote on whether the treasurer should be bonded. Plans for upcoming activities included a trip to Bosque del Apache, a garage tour, the Navy Band concert and a Twentieth Anniversary dinner. There was a list of other possible 1994 activities. Bill Reider reported on an article in the December 1993 OLD CARS which gave the Top Ten Reasons to own a Corvair! Plus the 11th reason: The Corvair is the only car ever certified "safe" by the U.S. government in tests conducted by the Department of Transportation. More technical articles included a discussion of CFC regulation (air conditioning after the phase-out of freon) and tips on removing a windshield without breaking it -- no easy task. Twenty-one Years Ago - Feb. 1987 - Volume 13 - Number 2 - Issue 137 Our cover congratulated Karen and Clayborne on the arrival of daughter Allison on 01/26/1987. We had $866 to spend. We planned to visit Elmo Reinhardt's garage (was this the "Tool Museum" or some other place?) and hoped to visit Bobby Unser. Mark Morgan, a CNM founder, our first president and first newsletter editor, stopped by the meeting on his way through town. A story by Tom Martin described taking a brand-new 1961 Corvair on an antelope hunt. The car survived. Clayborne told us about installing a Chevy S-10 spoiler on his 1967 Monza sedan to enhance stability in cross winds. Twenty-eight Years Ago - Feb. 1980 - Volume 6 - Number 2 - Issue 53 The February 1980 cover announced Ike Meissner's funeral. A moving tribute by Sylvan Zuercher reminded us of Ike's character and achievements. As Ike said, "Blessed are those with the Corvair hobby for they shall be allowed to get dirty." Tech tips abounded this month: Joel said to use white vinegar to get vinyl cloudiness off the inside surfaces of glass. Francis told how to get the distributor rotor off without damaging the weight cover. Tom Silvan told about the danger of fire with too-liberal application of rustproofing or undercoating material too close to exhaust parts. Bob Welch said trouble with dash and instrument lights was often caused by a bad ground. =[CNM]= CAR COUNCIL REPORT - 1-23-08 Art Gold The "Happy New Year!" edition. Say goodbye to 2007 and hello to yet another installment of the New Mexico Car Council report. To my chagrin, the enormous gavel which we all grown accustomed to love has been replaced, and this replacement, a glorified bellhop bell. I guess 2008 tends to be a year of great changes. However, one aspect of the meeting's beginning has not changed, and that is seen in your representatives, Cary Hubbard and yours truly, Art Gold. First on the agenda: a representative of Route 66 magazine came to give a bit of information concerning the magazine and to plug the advertising portion of the periodical. This publication is quite interesting, if you have not heard of it. Route 66 magazine highlights the wonders of the years gone by on the infamous Route 66 thoroughfare, such as articles concerning famous landmarks (i.e. Dick Clark's Auto Museum and Theatre in Branson, Missouri) and stops that many travelers would have utilized until the glory days of the "mother road" were ended by the speedier and efficient interstate. For more information on Route 66 magazine, go to Page One or the Owl Cafe (for a hard copy) or go to: http://www.route66magazine.com/. Second on the agenda: a pleasant fellow, by the name of Tom Flemins came to discuss his new business Pro-Stock. What Pro-Stock is that it is a clearing house for any type of vehicle, ranging from the years of 1965-1976. This clearing house hopefully will allow the budding movie industry access to cars that would have proved utterly and agonizingly tedious to obtain through conventional methods. Tom assured the group that he will not sell your name or phone number, and he will get you top dollar from the particular firm or company seeking a specific vehicle, some upwards to $125 a day plus food (if you decide to stay with the vehicle during the production time. Also, there is no cost for placement in the clearing house. For more information or to place your automobile in the database, call Tom Flemins at 505-269-4474, and please include the color of your car. Currently, the movie "Love Ranch" is seeking about 100 cars to be utilized for filming a period piece of the early 1970s, just to let you know. Third on the agenda: the event that shook the world in the absence of the Council's meetings. This notable event was the Martin Luther King parade held on the 13th of January at University and Martin Luther King Blvd. The parade was a resounding success with multiple clubs attending and escorting many buffalo soldiers and even Miss New Mexico made an appearance! Fourth on the agenda: the Super Nationals. Vice President Mike Maestas reported that his contact at the Super Nationals (Reggie) is allowing the Council to have their own space for the occasion. The Flower Building at Expo New Mexico should be a wonderful and exciting venue for the clubs to gains some exposure for some exceptional local vehicles. Mike is a bit wary about making the 17 car quota set by his contact Reggie. At the time of the Council meeting, they were about 8 cars short (this including alternates). If you are interested in displaying a beautiful Corvair at the Super Nationals, then contact Mike Maestas at 385-8764. Just to let you know, the registration fee is $40, but it does include two free passes all weekend for the show. Last on the agenda: Museum Show and the All Clubs Picnic. There was loads of discussion concerning the upcoming Museum Show. Last year's show was a resounding success. This year's will prove to be even better, with it being the 100th anniversary GM and the 50th anniversary of the stylus and awe inspiring Edsel. The fee for the show will still be $10, but there will be no more pre-registration ("trying to make it easier"). Also, they discussed staggering the entry times, so that clubs can be together. As for the All Clubs Picnic, the Route 66 Routers will be sponsoring. The picnic will still be held at Villanueva State Park, and will be on August 10, 2008. That's all, but do not worry, more information will be upcoming on these and hopefully more events to tantalize your car hunger.
