He bought a low mileage 1969 coupe on eBay. He brought the car to the April meeting. We hope to see Brian in June. Curtis Shimp attended the Pagosa Springs Tri-State. He is from Silver City and is a long-time CORSA member and looks forward to joining our activities. Fred Riggs has joined CNM. He's from Las Vegas, New Mexico. Melba J. and Tommie J. Anderson went to the Pagosa Springs Tri-State and have joined CNM. They are from Rio Rancho. More informmation about our new members will follow. We hope to see them at our June meeting. Let's welcome our new members and make them feel at home as fellow Corvair enthusiasts! =[CNM]= If your membership is due or has expired, please send your Dues to: Wendell Walker, CNM Treasurer, 301 Utah Meadow, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 Past due memberships will become inactive after a one-month grace period. The Club will mail in your National Dues when you renew, provided that you send us the renewal form from your CORSA Communique! =[CNM]= MAY MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees President Stickler called our meeting to order at Highland Senior Center at 19:03 on May 7, 2008. There were 25 members present including all officers. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Treasurer Wendell Walker reported that CNM had $114.71 in the checking account and $2,206.05 in the GMAC account for a total of $2,320.76. He said that to pay bills he will have to transfer some funds from the GMAC account to the checking account. Geoff Johnson announced that his sister Sally Williams had a baby boy. Mother and baby are doing fine. Geoff described the baby as CNM's latest member and a future Corvair rebuilder who was already poring over CORSA technical documents. No new members were present but it was announced that a possible new member would be Brian Rowe. He has a 1969 coupe with low miles but because of a conflict, was unable to make this meeting. Art Gold reported that the Car Council meeting went smoother than usual. The Council decided to expend the money to have a professional redo their web site. It should pay for itself in 2 years. It will be much easier to make entries and to keep it up to date. The annual All Clubs Picnic will be on August 10th at Villanueva State Park, the same venue as last year. The Route 66 Rodders are in charge. Everyone praised last year's picnic. Heula Pittman reported that Dale Wilshire, president of the Rocky Mountain Corvair Chapter in Denver, had died on April 7th. The Sunshine Committee sent a card from CNM. The big discussion of the evening was about the club's finances as reported in last month's board meeting minutes. The board members believe it is necessary to raise our CNM dues. The last dues increase was 15 to 18 years ago. Anyone who is a member of any other organization can recognize how relatively low our dues have been. We made a big chunk of money when we had the international convention several years ago, but we have been gradually going through it, on two occasions subsidizing Anniversary Party meals at the County Line. This is money that was well spent, but we are slowly depleting our nest egg. The newsletter is our major expense and costs about $2.45 per member per month with our present membership. We all are aware of the benefit that the newsletter is to CNM. It helps keep the club aware of happenings. It is a great recruiting tool for getting new members when they are shown the kind of a newsletter that we have. We have thought of trying to cut costs by limiting the size of the newsletter, or by making it available exclusively on-line. On-line would not work well for some members who do not have access to the internet, or for many (such as I) who would not like to sit and read it on a computer terminal. Printing it out at home is an extra expense for members who do so. Cutting the number of copies we print would not work because the fewer we have printed the more per copy it costs. Postage rates are going up, with the latest increase effective May 12th. We mail several copies to other CORSA chapters or "courtesy" copies to certain CORSA individuals, and we feel the club receives value from these mailings. We may save postage by cutting back on some of these mailings. We are expecting CORSA to increase their dues and to cut back on publication of the Communique. For many months we have been mailing our newsletter in envelopes in an attempt to reduce the shredding of newsletters by machinery in the post office. Ray Trujillo has supplied the envelopes. Anyone who receives mailings from other organizations that are sent without envelopes, is used to receiving them in parts or sometimes in a Post Office plastic bag. Because of the postal service's present rate structure, a 2 ounce newsletter can be mailed for less that two times the 1 ounce letter rate. I may seem to have rambled on about this, but your Secretary feels that the club's financial health, the amount of CNM dues and maintaining the excellent newsletter are VERY important to the club. After our discussion it was voted on and passed that the dues would increase to $25.00 per year and $50.00 for 26 months. This would go into effect at the end of the July meeting. Anyone who wants to do so may renew for 12 months or for 26 months at the old rate up until that time. Over the years we have had many ideas for raising money. For example, LeRoy Rogers started our tradition of holding auctions. We have also collected items to sell at the flea market, and we occasionally hold raffles at meetings. Pat Hall suggested that to raise money, club members could collect recyclable old or worn or broken parts from their garages. We all tend to save such parts in case we might need them in the future, and the reality is that many of them will never be used. If members collect such unused iron, steel, aluminum or copper material, since Pat knows how to deal with scrap metal, he could sell the material for the club. Pat says we'd be surprised at how much value there is in scrap metal these days. Vickie pointed out that if members collect their household cans, aluminum foil, pie pans and so on and bring them in, instead of just throwing them in the trash, they can add up to significant cash value. We will need to address the logistics of these ideas -- where and when to collect the recyclable materials -- and how much help this will be to the club. The board will look into this in the future. Upcoming events: May 10th is the next Old Route 66 clean-up. May 16-18 is the Tri-State. May 18th is the Albuquerque Museum/NMCCC Car Show. June 4th is the next regular meeting. June 7th is time for another breakfast. We decided to have it at Jimmy's on Jefferson near the Journal Center at 09:00 AM. Everyone is welcome. June 21st is EAA chapter 179 Young Eagles Rally in Moriarty. (This is not a club event and only aviation fans may be interested.) We discussed whether anyone wanted to organize a caravan to the Tri-State meeting, and several members agreed on a time and location to meet. Thanks to Pat Hall for sponsoring the recent TUNA on late rear wheel bearing removal and replacement. A CORSA member in California, Jim Craig, has made a special tool that works very well for this. He has sent Pat one and they are available for $25.00. Ask Pat about it. There was an obituary in last Sunday's paper about Dan Simpson who was a CNM member in the past. Dan was active in the automobile hobby years ago and one of his specialties was finding wrecked cars with a good front and a good rear and cutting and welding them together to make a complete car. It was suggested that future TUNAs or Tech Talks could be done on valve seats or steering boxes or shifter rebuilding. The meeting was adjourned at 20:10. Many of us go to the "66 Diner" at 1405 Central NE after the meeting, and all are welcome to join us. -- Chuck =[CNM]= CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO EXTENDS HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES TO EIGHT MEMBERS: Larry Hickerson .................... June 16 =[CNM]= MAY BOARD MEETING Jim Pittman We began arriving at Ray's place shortly before five o'clock on a windy, dusty Wednesday afternoon. Ray Trujillo, Vickie & Pat Hall, Heula & Jim Pittman, Robert Gold, David Huntoon, Brenda & Mike Stickler and Wendell Walker survived the silt-laden gusts. We kept waiting for Chuck but President Mike finally called the meeting to order at 17:07 (5:07 PM) and your editor pulled out a note pad and tried to keep up with the discussion. Treasurer Wendell reported $422.52 in our checking account, $1,706.05 in our GMAC account and a total of $2,128.57 and yes, he had to draw from the GMAC account to pay bills this month. (One member has already extended his membership by 26 months to take advantage of the old dues structure before the July 2nd deadline.) President Mike announced that the Sullivans planned to offer the club a pot luck on July 4th at their place in Corrales. It will start at 7:30 PM and part of the attraction will be watching the fireworks visible from the vantage point of a Corrales hillside. More information will follow including a map. Vice-president Pat said that we had discussed having a 50/50 drawing at each meeting, as other clubs do, as a fund-raiser for the club's treasury. A motion was made that we start this at the next meeting and all who voted voted in the affirmative. Those who didn't vote presumably agreed to go along. There was no Secretary's report as Chuck still had not arrived and we all hoped he was okay. In fact he was, having merely forgotten the meeting date. David reported that not one but two new members were joining us, and there was a rumor of a third. The two new members were Curtis Shimp of Silver City, New Mexico and Fred Riggs of Las Vegas, New Mexico. We look forward hearing more from Curtis and Fred before long. Brenda mentioned that Curtis is a long-time CORSA member. He's now retired and is looking forward to activities with our club. We believe that the rumored potential new member is from Rio Rancho and at Wendell's invitation went to the Pagosa Springs Tri-State and had a great time there. We look forward to a happy resolution to this rumor. The editor's report started with a reminder of the upcoming deadline for material for the June newsletter and then turned into a discussion about the future of our newsletter in an era of higher costs and the final covering of the world (or at least our part of it) by various forms of electronic communication. These points were made: * We wish to continue to provide a mailed paper copy of the newsletter to every dues-paying member. * We wish to continue to mail "exchange" newsletters to certain other chapters and "courtesy" newsletters to certain CORSA-affiliated individuals. * We intend to continue making our newsletter available on the Internet (i.e., on Jim's web page) as a full-color downloadable PDF. * The editor will maintain a mailing list (all CNM members with e-mail and all CORSA chapters or individuals for whom we have e-mail addresses) to notify everyone when the newsletter is available. * We will print a notice to be included in the June newsletter asking our "exchange" and "courtesy" friends whether they wish to continue to get a mailed paper copy in addition to the Internet downloadable PDF. * Members who truly wish to get the newsletter only via the Internet and thereby save the club postage costs may ask the editor to take them off the mailing list for the paper newsletter. * Your editor, with help from board members, will inventory newsletters we receive from other clubs so we'll know which ones we are getting (there are currently 15 or 20) and decide whether some of them should be dropped from our mailing list. Your editor did not mention this at the meeting, but members may want to be reminded that the club has an "official" web site under the auspices of CORSA which in the past has been maintained by Steve Gongora. This site has a link to "Current Information and Newsletters Online" which is the personal web page of your editor as a retired employee of the University of New Mexico. This web page may continue as long as your editor does, or it may disappear at any time. As a web site under the auspices of the University it is not permitted to contain any commercial content. Sunshine Committee: Heula reported no news at the moment. Later in the meeting it was pointed out that those attending the board meetings should appreciate Ray's hospitality and refreshments (coffee or soft drinks) and said we should help with the cost of these refreshments. Brenda reported on preparations for our sponsorship of the 2009 Tri-State Event. We are optimistic that this will be an outstanding Tri-State. After the Pagosa Springs event Brenda went to Taos to talk to her hotel and city contacts there. The Kachina Lodge host hotel is most impressive and opportunities for activities in Taos are many. Her only concern was an adequate location for a car show, but she thinks this can be worked out. We already have committees: * T-Shirts. Rita & Steve Gongora are working on good but inexpensive T-Shirts and are trying to come up with a suitable logo for the Taos Tri-State. Perhaps, to go with our host hotel, something with a Kachina motif. * Car Show. Pat Hall and John Wiker will start preparations for this. We hope to improve on the mechanism for evaluating and voting for "winning" cars. * Door Prizes. Volunteer for the committee. Someone can check with car dealers or other businesses for items suitable for including in goody bags to be given to all who register. * Registration. Volunteers to organize and conduct registration are needed. * Decorations for banquet. Volunteers needed. * More functions will come up. Be thinking about what you can do to help! Christmas Dinner: Rita Gongora has been scouting for a suitable location. Recall that after the 2007 Christmas brunch at Kirtland AFB we had (1) an announcement that our long-time sponsor, Hector Gongora, would no longer be able to do this and (2) several members objected to going onto the military base or having the event on Sunday. We are considering changing to Saturday. Do we want a morning or noon or evening dinner? A suggestion for the location was Perennials Restaurant at Osuna and San Mateo NE. Stay tuned. UPCOMING EVENTS: We have a breakfast scheduled for Saturday June 7th at 9:00 AM at Jimmy's Restaurant at 7007 Jefferson Blvd NE. That's the Saturday after the June meeting. Think "breakfast" instead of cleaning up the highway or tuning up your car! A trip to Tinkertown on the road to Sandia Crest, possibly including an economy run, is on the back burner. (Mike contacted Chuck after the meeting and there's probably not enough time to set this up for June, so look for it later.) Pat said he'd like to have a combination TUNA and Garage Tour at his place. Having both on the same day, with a lunch break in between, could be convenient for those driving down to Los Lunas. Maybe late August, early July? More on this later. The Fourth of July has often seen CNMers and Corvairs at the Santa Fe Plaza for the famous pancake breakfast and car show. July 4th is on a Friday this year. Do we want to organize a group to go this year? Don't forget the potluck that evening at the Sullivans' in Corrales. Don't forget to put on your calendar the party at the Palmers' place on Juan Tomas Road, scheduled for 6:00 PM on Saturday August 23. In October the Balloon Fiesta offers us the possibility of a convenient car show. Those who participated in the past have made positive reports. Other clubs have "Activities Director" or "Social Director" positions. Do we need such an office in CNM? Any volunteers? Running out of topics, we adjourned at about 7:05. =[CNM]= STICK TO VAIRS! Mike Stickler I really enjoyed attending the Tri-State at Pagosa Springs this year. There was a good number of sharp looking Corvairs to admire, and soaking in the world's largest hot springs resort was a very relaxing treat. There were many more Colorado participants than NM attendees, but that is usually the case, especially when the event is held "North of the Border" so to speak. We were so enthused as we left Pagosa Springs that Kyle, Brenda and I decided to go through Taos as our route home. We stopped by the Kachina Inn which we plan to make our headquarters for the 2009 Tri-State. We were blown away by the beauty and charm of its traditional pueblo styling. I believe it will probably be the finest host hotel that the Tri-State has ever been held at. Every CNM member should start planning to attend next year's Tri-State and maybe we can win back the traveling trophy. I can hear the Coloradans saying, In your dreams! Well, why not? Closer to home and closer in time, we can all look forward to our club breakfast in June at Jimmy's Restaurant, and the Fourth of July fireworks as viewed from the Sullivans' house while we enjoy our potluck. Maybe some of us will be at the Santa Fe Plaza early on the Fourth for the pancake breakfast and car show. As I close on a personal note, it was wonderful to hear that my son Kyle is interested in attending the 2009 Tri-State and that he has offered to help me prepare a vehicle to enter in the Car Show there. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Corvair Meeting in June. The ranks of Corvairs had been thinned greatly when most of the members of Corvairs of New Mexico chose to leave town to attend a competing Corvair gathering which will remain nameless. One potential exhibitor went so far as to go to California to avoid being seen at the local car show. Another CNM'er opted for French cars at the show. The question to be answered here is whether the defections resulted in a fatal blow to the reputation of Corvairs in New Mexico. Let's first take a moment and describe the Corvairs that were exhibited by CNM'ers. Dave Huntoon's yellow 1961 8-door van headed the club's display area. Next in line was Art Gold's honorary Corvair, a 1972 Pontiac Ventura, driven to the show by his wife, Kelly. Then came Art's recently restored 1965 Corsa convertible. This was followed by Robert and Anne Mae Gold's 1965 Corsa convertible and a 1962 Greenbrier van. For those of you keeping score at home, that totals four Corvairs. If you add in the two gorgeous early model Corvairs entered by non-club members, this show had a mere six Corvairs displayed. However, that isn't the real story of this show. From a Corvair lover's viewpoint the real story is how well our cars were received by the public. I think the Corvair is now being recognized as the quality vehicle it always has been. We at the show were questioned by many people about our cars. They wanted to know about how to find a good car to buy, what it takes to repair a Corvair, and how we like owning Corvairs. We even added a new CNM member. We left the show truly feeling good about the experience and knowing for sure that our cars are being appreciated. I want to recognize the Car Council for setting aside a separate class for the Corvair. This goes a long way to help promote our cars to the public. Though we would have liked to have had more cars, the cars we showed added a lot to the car show overall. The CNM cars that were given awards in the Corvair class were: 2nd Place Robert Gold -- 1965 Corsa Convertible 3rd Place Art Gold -- 1965 Corsa Convertible I hope to see more CNM'ers at next year's show. Let's get our numbers back to where they were traditionally. This is a great show and deserves our support! -- Robert Gold =[CNM]= REPORT OF THE CAR COUNCIL MEETING OF APRIL 23, 2008 Art Gold Again another eventful report proceeds from the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs. This month's Car Council meeting was again well received by your club's representative. After the enormous gavel fell, the meeting got underway with the customary treasurer's report. Good news is to be had from this report; there is money in the account, around $5,965.26! Now, on to the old business. The main topic of discussion consisted of the upcoming Valencia County Summer Fest, to be held the weekend of June 13th. The show is slated to have a staggering amount of 250 cars, separated into 12 classes. The winner of each category is placed on a yearly calendar, of which a grand champion will be chosen. Registration is a mere $25 for this fabulous event, which will include a wine/brew fest, arts and crafts fair, a battle of the bands, a swap meet, and even a drive-in movie (not sure of the title though, maybe Coneheads?). The wondrous gas buster, the Rail Runner, will be running on Saturday (with access via shuttle buses) to facilitate transit to the event. For more information check out this website: http://www.loslunasnm.gov Hope to see you there! On June 17th and 18th a very special tour of Model-A Fords will be driving from Barstow, CA going east, concerning about 33 cars (plus entourage). This group will be passing through Los Lunas. They will be staying the night, but this reporter is not sure where. Check the NMCCC website or contact Joyce for more information. There was also discussion of the ongoing saga concerning the NMCCC website. What was brought up was that a professional outfit (out of Washington D.C.) could simplify the website for a fee of $3,500. This simplification of the website would prove to pay for itself in a matter of months, and would prove to be user friendly for anyone to use. The website would allow folks to cut and paste new information at will, and would have web sites of all of the participating clubs directly linked on the site. There was a motion on the floor to allow further discussion of this topic by the officers of the NMCCC, and it was voted unanimously in favor. The final decision would be discussed at the May meeting. That rounds out the old business. Now, on to the new business. The Albuquerque Museum Car Show was to be held on May 14th. There was just small discussion on duties for the show, and the times for various clubs to enter the show. The show report will be forthcoming. The All Clubs Picnic will continue again this year, at the same location, Villanueva State Park. If you have any suggestions or donations for the picnic, contact Joyce. That's all for the new business, and the report. Art Gold, humbly reporting =[CNM]= FINDING #1 CYLINDER TDC Steve Goodman It can happen to any of us: Remove the distributor, then somehow the engine gets rotated; OR someone simply fails to note the rotor position when the distributor comes out. I get a panicked call about this ever so often, and it came up at the RMC meeting last month. It is not the worst of situations. Here is the easy way to find #1 again: 1. Remove the number one spark plug. 2. Screw a compression test gauge into number one plug hole, or do what I do, just stick the tip of a finger down to cover the plug hole, and turn the engine over until you either see compression building on the gauge or feel it pushing past your finger. A remote starter buttons is ideal, but having someone "bump" the engine using the key works. 3. Once you feel the compression building, rotate the engine manually (in the normal CCW rotation) using a wrench on the crank pulley bolt (3/4" wrench), or by pulling on the belt. You want the timing notch on the pulley to match up to the 0 (zero) mark on the timing indicator. 4. Now hold the distributor at the engine and move the rotor until it points to number one contact on the distributor cap. 5. With a light, look down the distributor hole and compare the slot in the oil pump and compare with the spade end of the distributor. These need to be aligned because the distributor shaft also drives the oil pump. 6. If the alignment looks close, just slip the distributor into the hole and it will drop exactly into place. If it doesn't, you might need to use a long screwdriver blade to rotate the oil pump slightly. The distributor should line up and drop into position easily. DO NOT FORCE IT, it will fit nicely and easily when everything is correctly adjusted. 7. After installing the hold-down clamp and nut securely, you'll need to re- time the ignition. There is another way too: If you have the oil pan off, just rotate the engine until the timing mark on the camshaft is at the bottom, at the case half split. In that position, the engine is at TDC on Number One. Curious little note here, when Corvair engines are assembled with the cam/crank marks lined up, the engine is actually at TDC on number TWO. Rotating the camshaft a half turn places it at the bottom and presto: Number One is found. If the last statement doesn't make sense, remember that the crank turns twice as many times as the camshaft. We gathered on I-25 just north of the Placitas/Bernalillo exit. After greetings, at sharply 10:00 AM John Wiker, Wendy & Vance Walker, Rita & Steve Gongora, Pat & Vickie Hall, Mike, Brenda & Kyle Stickler all started their engines to head north to Pagosa Springs. Along the way we visited at the pit stops and once we had to check tire pressure on the side of the road. Even with a McDonald's lunch break we made great time and in the early afternoon we arrived at the Oak Ridge Lodge to sign in. We had a perfect start to a wonderful weekend with fabulous Corvair friends. We were glad to get our goody bags, banquet tickets, raffle tickets and of course we were happy to buy the special 2008 Tri-State T-shirts. There was a relaxing atmosphere in this city with such a great natural source of recharging the systems - Natural Hot Springs! There was a local restaurant, recommended by the Rocky Mountain Corsa folks, and a good number of us enjoyed a Mexican dinner our first night in town. (Yes, no one but us will understand how superior New Mexican cuisine is -- to us -- maybe in Taos next year we can convert some Coloradans?) In attendance there were 96 registered for this Tri-State. Maybe the 8:30 AM lineup of cars for the Car Show came just a little too early on Saturday Morning. Wake up, Brenda! There were families registered. In years past, we thought, the count was always the number of individuals present from each club. It would have been interesting to get the actual number of people from each club as well as the number from each state. Other CNM members we ran into were Tarmo Sutt, Ruth Boydston with daughter Sherry and granddaughter Amanda, and LeRoy and Emma Rogers. We ran into David Langlois and his very sweet fiance' Mona who drove up from Albuquerque. We all admired and voted on a fabulous selection of Corvairs in top shape. Tri-State Events often result in new members for the participating clubs. Our club is fortunate to have picked up two (maybe three?) new members from this Tri-State. We met Curtis Shimp and Melba & Tommie Anderson who had Corvairs in the car show with New Mexico license plates. We are looking forward to introducing them to the other members of our great club. We would love to have David and Mona in our club... perhaps they have bigger plans going on right now. Rocky Mountain Corsa did a great job hosting this Tri-State. We surely were impressed by their activities director Laura who headed the planning and organization. We had a very nice banquet. The room was small but the food was great. The car show results were: Best Early convertible ...... Dave Olwine .......... 1963 Spyder Convertible Best Early Coupe ............ Jean Olwine .......... 1963 Monza Coupe Best Late Convertible ....... Darren Darnell ....... 1966 Monza Convertible Best Late Coupe ............. Larry Yoder .......... 1966 Corsa Coupe Best F/C/ Wagon ............. Tim Shortle .......... 1963 Rampside Best of Show ................ Dave Olwine .......... 1963 Spyder Convertible. This year's Boydston Award went to Dennis and Debbie Pleau. We all remembered how much this couple enriched our lives as members of Corvairs of New Mexico and as members of Pikes Peak Corvair Club. We all have such fond memories of Debbie. We'll never forget Debbie and Dennis for their positive personalities and their devotion to both local and national CORSA activities, especially the effort Debbie put into the terrific 1996 International CORSA Convention in Albuquerque. It is true that this year none of us from New Mexico left with a trophy or plaque... but in the big picture we think our club is a real winner this year in finding wonderful new members and in having valuable moments with many of our fellow Corvair enthusiasts from Colorado and other states. I'm so looking forward to our club hosting these wonderful people in our Land of Enchantment. We hope to make the 2009 Tri-State in Taos an event to rank with the great Tri-States of the past. -- Brenda =[CNM]= WHAT DO THE NUMBERS ON TIRES' SIDEWALLS MEAN? Reported by Steve Gongora The first number is the tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. The number after the slash is the aspect ratio of the tire height compared with the tire width: In this case, the height is about 65 percent of the width. The next letter, either "R" or "B", indicates tire construction: "R" means radial; "B" means bias ply. The next two digits show the wheel diameter in inches -- in this case, 16 in. Following a space will be two or three digits that describe load index, a range that indicates how much weight the tire is certified to carry at maximum inflation pressure -- in this example, "98" indicates a maximum load of 1,653 pounds. The next letter (H or Q through Z) represents the speed rating -- in our example, the "T" means that the tire is rated up to 118 mph. (Speed-rating and load-rating charts are available on most tire manufacturers' Web sites.) Finally, some tire codes may include one extra designation: "M+S", meaning the tire is rated for mud and snow. HOW CAN I TELL HOW OLD MY TIRES ARE? Reported by Steve Gongora Every tire has a Department of Transportation (DOT) number imprinted on its sidewalls that begins with the letters "DOT" and may contain 12 additional numbers and letters. Before the year 2000, the last three digits of a DOT number represented the week (two digits) and the year (one digit) of production. So if the last three digits are 279, the tire was produced the 27th week of 1999. Tires produced after January 1, 2000, have a four-digit date code at the end of the DOT number. The first two digits represent the week of production and the last two digits represent the year of production. So 1806 would indicate that the tire was produced in the 18th week of 2006. =[CNM]= OLD ROUTE 66 CLEANUP Ollie Scheflow The club held its second cleanup of 2008 on May 10th. We met at our usual spot and had our usual discussions of ongoing Corvair work and maybe a few tall tales before heading out to gather trash. We had a nice sunny day but the wind was rather strong so that it was hard to keep the bags open enough to get things in without also having things blow out. The pickup was unusually light. We think that was because a prison gang had recently cleaned up that stretch of the highway. I didn't hear anyone complaining about the light trash load. Participants this time were: Robert and Javier Gold, Pat Hall, Dave Huntoon, Jim Pittman and Ollie Scheflow. Thanks to the participants and I hope to see you at the July pickup. Remember, all CNMers are welcome to join us -- stories of your ongoing Corvair work or any new tall tales would be welcome! =[CNM]= NEWEST CORVAIR PERSON ARRIVES by Ace CNM Reporter Jimmy See photos on the previous page. We have learned that a new Corvair master mechanic and fearless driver has arrived on the scene. Sally is reported to be doing fine and the new member of the family (for some reason your reporter has not discovered a name) is doing fine also, and reportedly one of the first acts the new person made upon arriving was to make a grab for the latest CORSA Communique. You just can't be too young to get started learning who's who in CORSA and what's what with Corvair mechanics! Uncle Geoff and Grandfather Carl are as proud and pleased as if they'd just found a shiny new 1969 convertible in perfect condition. We'll have more news later. In the meantime, thanks to Zoe Johnson for forwarding the photos. Also on the previous page, Steve Gongora passed along an illustrated article on the dangers of keeping your tires beyond their expiration dates -- and how to determine what that expiration date is. A significant question is, how old is too old? There seems to be no definitive answer to that question. Factors in tire ageing include how much of their time has been spent in high temperature and how much sunlight they have been exposed to. Maybe ozone levels during the tire's life is an important factor too. So be sure to check your tires' birthdates! =[CNM]= LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (1) Subject: Potential Members From: stevegongora @ houseofcovers.com Date: 2008-May-19 16:21:22 MDT Jim, A couple from Albuquerque attended the event in Pagosa Springs and an individual from Silver City. I have visited Taos and think I even stayed in the host hotel and memories of the stay there are great! Regards, Garrie Fox =[CNM]= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - June 2001 - Volume 27 - Number 6 - Issue 309 Our cover: photos from our Tri-State in Manitou Springs. At our May meeting, Wendell said we had $5,686 to spend. New members: Barbara & Gordon Johnson of Corrales. Larry gave the answers to the Big-I Quiz from last month. Mark previewed the upcoming CORSA convention in Chicago. Some of us planned to be at the Santa Fe Plaza on July 4th in time for pancakes. Ruth volunteered her Pecos Wilderness cabin for an August campout. Sylvan reported news of former member Will Davis, now in Florida: he picked up a dune buggy with 140 and Holley carb. Many of our members had an absolutely terrific time at the Tri-State and reports came from Mary Lou Martinek, Kay Sutt, Steve Goodman, Elizabeth Domzalski, Jim Pittman and Dennis Pleau. There were also reports on the Albuquerque Museum car shoe by Robert Gold and an e-mail comment from del patten on the Big-I Quiz. Fourteen Years Ago - June 1994 - Volume 20 - Number 6 - Issue 225 The cover showed us the "oldest known" registered Corvette in New Mexico: a 1954 6-cylinder that was in an Albuquerque Museum car show. President Del ran the meeting. Guests were David Patten and Gary Rudolph. A new member was George White. Treasurer Will Davis reported $918 in the bank; $50 was sent to the Michelle Goffe Foundation Scholarship Fund and $200 was used to start our 1996 Convention fund. We discussed various upcoming car shows and a planned rally or econorun. Several members planned to go on the Villanueva campout. It was our turn to host the Tri-State next year; popular demand dictated it would be at Red River again. Technical articles included an update on replacing shroud seals by Larry Blair and a report on our recent shifter clinic by Steve Gongora. Newsletter cartoon character Shoe's old DeSoto reportedly got 30 miles per gallon. The problem was, it was oil, not gasoline. And this issue presented nine photos from our Albuquerque Museum Car Show. Twenty-one Years Ago - June 1987 - Volume 13 - Number 6 - Issue 141 The cover was another Mark Morgan fantasy sketch: two CNM members fight BERNALILLO VICE in their Corvair/Ferrari replica. President Clayborne ran the meeting and LeRoy said we had $529 in the bank. Seven Corvairs went on a rainy trip to Madrid. New name tags arrived. We planned our participation in the May Albuquerque Museum car show, a June picnic and a June econorun. LeRoy listed items to be auctioned in June. An illustrated tech tip by Jerry Goffe told us how to obtain and install a replacement license plate light housing for our 95 FCs. Other tech tips told how to remove the oil pickup tube when disassembling an engine and the proper way to use a test light. Bill Reider reported on the Albuquerque Museum car show. Tarmo's 1964 Monza convertible took Best of Show and no fewer than fifteen Corvairs were entered! Twenty-eight Years Ago - June 1980 - Volume 6 - Number 6 - Issue 57 The cover showed a Porsche, an Elephant and a Beetle, all with racing stripes. The joke question was, "What did they have in common with Corvairs?" If you don't know, ask your president. A historical note: this was the first issue of Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter to be printed on Jim's new Apple II Plus computer and NEC Spinwriter letter-quality printer, using a word processor called Super-Text. Although this and many later issues of the newsletter looked more or less the same as before, editing the newsletter by computer was a major improvement for the editor! No more typing on a borrowed IBM Selectric, no more white-out, no more re-typing an entire page to correct a minor error. Being able to use a computer to produce the newsletter pushed back the editor's burn-out crisis by many, many years. In fact, thanks to the little guy in the back of his head, he still hasn't reached it! At our June meeting we may have had a Club officer in charge, we may have had a treasurer's report and we may have approved the minutes, but we'll never know for sure because none of this made it into the newsletter. We learned that Corvairs were no longer wanted at the State Fair. We were invited to Moriarty for their July Fourth parade. Mary Twilley donated a Corvair billfold for a drawing. Jim Godlevski demonstrated his technique for welding and balancing flywheels. Yes, welding. Bill Reider gave a talk on distributors. A new member was Bill Hector. We donated $100 to the Kidney Foundation of New Mexico in memory of Ike Meissner. An article on fuel mileage by your editor discussed the changes in the way mileage is reported now as compared to back in the sixties when our cars were new. Jim asserted that EPA gas mileage figures are inflated some 25 to 30 percent as compared to the SAE ratings that were common during the sixties. Also, since gas mileage isn't actually measured on the road but rather is calculated from running an engine in the lab, you can't count on getting the mileage the EPA says when you buy your new Chevrolet or Toyota. It also means you can't readily compare published road test figures on Corvairs to road test numbers on modern cars, since the measuring rules are different. Extrapolating from these facts, Jim gave actual gas mileage figures for two of his Corvairs and showed what (he claimed) the EPA figures would be if this was a valid argument. Finally, we had an article about a "Devin" Corvair-powered sports car, a call for statistics on who in the club were "old timers" and a letter from Seth Emerson who was running for CORSA director and asked for our votes. We finished up with two tech tips: where to find a suitable replacement radio speaker and how to use a Wisk bottle as an oil funnel. =[CNM]= ******************************************************************************* TO OUR "EXCHANGE" AND "COURTESY" NEWSLETTER CHAPTERS As printing and postage costs rise, it seems necessary to cut back on expenses. We concluded that we needed to raise our dues, that we should organize club projects to make money, and that we should consider cutting the costs of producing our newsletter. But we felt that the newsletter is of vital importance to the club and we did not want to reduce its quality. As editor, I do not want to limit the number of features, articles or pages in the newsletter unnecessarily. I intend to continue mailing a paper copy (in black-and-white, not color) of our newsletter to ALL our dues-paying members every month. We may cut back on the "courtesy" and "exchange" newsletters we have been mailing to other CORSA Chapters or other CORSA individuals. We would like for our "exchange" chapters to continue mailing their newsletters to us, but already several chapters have discontinued paper newsletters in favor of Internet PDFs. It has been suggested that some of our members would be happy NOT to get a mailed paper copy of the newsletter every month, so long as the full-color PDF version of the newsletter can be downloaded and read or printed out. Although I believe there is value in getting the paper copy by mail, if you truly do NOT wish to get the mailed newsletter, I will quit mailing it to you. That would save the club $7.00 or so per year in postage and handling. Let me know.
