He bought a low mileage 1969 coupe on eBay. He brought the car to the April meeting for us to admire. We hope to see Brian again in July. Curtis Shimp attended the Pagosa Springs Tri-State. He is from Silver City and is a long-time CORSA member and looks forward to joining our activities. More information about our new members will follow. We hope to see them at our June meeting. Let's welcome our new members and make them feel at home as fellow Corvair enthusiasts! =[CNM]= If your membership is due or has expired, please send your Dues to: Wendell Walker, CNM Treasurer, 301 Utah Meadow, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 Past due memberships will become inactive after a one-month grace period. The Club will mail in your National Dues when you renew, provided that you send us the renewal form from your CORSA Communique! =[CNM]= JUNE MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at the Highland Senior Center on 6/4/08 at 18:00 by Vice President Pat Hall. There were 29 members present including new members Tommie J. and Melba J. Anderson. We are also expecting two new members who live in Silver City and Las Vegas (New Mexico that is) to come to our meetings or events. Treasurer Wendell Walker announced that CNM had $836.53 in the checking account and $1,715.19 in the GMAC account for a total of $2,551.72. There was no Car Council report because they had not met yet this month. Heula said that the Sunshine Committee had nothing to report. Jim Pittman said that a letter of thanks had been sent to Galles signed by President Mike. He has had some clubs contact him to say they would get their copy of our newsletter from our web site. If members of CNM want to get it from the web site, it is a PDF file and is in color. The newsletter deadline is Friday the 20th this month. Pat Hall appointed Sylvan Zuercher chairman of a committee to recommend changes to the Ike Meissner Award. It was decided that further discussion of the CNM awards should take place at board meetings. Members who feel they should have a say about any changes to our awards policies are invited to any board meeting. September 13th weekend is the Car Council Swap Meet in Los Lunas. The All Clubs Picnic is August 10th at Villaneuva State Park, the same location as last year's very successful picnic. Pat Hall said that he would bring his truck to the July meeting for our first scrap metal drive. All members who have any scrap metal items that they want to get rid of, copper, aluminum, iron and so on, should bring it to that meeting. Pat will sell the scrap metal and bring the check to the treasury. Pat has been dealing in scrap metal for years and knows the market. Rita Gongora suggested that we consider having our annual Christmas party on Saturday evening December 6th instead of Sunday December 7th. Our traditional Sunday brunch time has been a problem for some of our members because of church attendance. She has contacted Perennials Restaurant at Osuna and San Mateo. They are not open to the public on Saturdays, so the whole place would be available to us. We could bring wine if we wanted to, and there would be choices from a menu. We could continue to bring gifts for a charity cause as in the past. Rita is also working with Brenda on the shirts for the 2009 Tri-State. There was discussion as to whether we should have T-shirts, Golf shirts or both. Both Larry Blair and your secretary stated that they would rather have golf shirts. There seemed to be general agreement for having the Christmas dinner on Saturday evening instead of Sunday morning. We had a 50/50 drawing to raise money for the treasury and $12.50 was won by Robert Garrecht who immediately donated part of it (?) back to the treasury. Ruth Boydston brought in a genuine Corvair jack for bidding. Robert Garrecht made the $25 highest bid but I think the bid was contingent on Ruth's finding a real Corvair jack handle for it. Since Robert's donation to the treasury was sitting there lonely, Pat Hall added another $10 and challenged the rest of us to add more. Everyone joined in and we ended up with $75.00 for Wendell to put in the bank. Melba Anderson said that she had a connection with the Tomia (?) shuttle people and that at times they need cars to shuttle people back and forth, usually from 18:30 to 22:30 and this is for 40 to 50 dollars an hour for each car. This is sometime in the afternoon also. This will be discussed by the board. Larry Blair said that he had gone to a rent-a-lift place near Central and San Pedro to do some work on one of his cars. The address is 6320-A Domingo NE. Larry said that they charge $7.00 an hour to use the lift. They supply the lift, shop lights and air. You must bring your own tools. Larry said that it was really great to be standing and seeing what was going on under a car instead of having to lie on your back and scoot around. It you are more mature like your secretary, the bi-focals really come into a real workout. The telephone numbers are 269-3082 and 265-0733. Finally, Dave Huntoon told us that the New Mexico Veterans Integration Center at San Pedro and Central is raffling a 1966 Corvair, 4 door Monza, new paint, all the air conditioning except a compressor. The tickets are $20.00 and the drawing is in November. This is a worthy cause and maybe a worthy Corvair for someone. The location is what you may remember as the old Sundowner Motel. With no more business, the meeting was adjourned at 20:55. -- Chuck =[CNM]= HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES GO TO NINE CNMERS THIS MONTH: Debra Anderson July 6 Nancy Urbassik July 6 Mark Domzalski July 8 Tarmo Sutt July 8 Larry Blair July 15 Leslie Sullivan July 18 Gayle Finch July 27 Richard Finch July 29 Kay Sutt July 31 SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY WISHES GO TO: Anne & John Wiker July 6 Linda & Dick Cochran July 18 =[CNM]= JUNE BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 17:10 (5:10 PM) by Vice President Pat Hall. President Mike Stickler couldn't attend due to a relapse of his illness. Present were Ray Trujillo, Wendell Walker, Brenda Stickler, Pat & Vickie Hall, Jim & Heula Pittman, Steve Gongora, and Chuck & Julia Vertrees. Wendell reported that CNM had $1,010.53 in the checking account, $1,724.07 in the GMAC account for a total of $2,734.60. He was asked about the balances kept in the two accounts. Wendell said normally, if the checking account stays above $1,000 for a while, he will take out $500 and return it to the GMAC account, and if unusual expenses are expected, he'll transfer money from the GMAC to the checking account. There was no report on membership and no report about the Car Council. We think the Car Council's June meeting will be next week. Jim brought up the results of the article and discussion about who should get the newsletter. Jim has had a few replies about the exchange of newsletters. Some said that they liked to receive the newsletter, and some said to please put them on the e-mail list and they would download it themselves. Jim said he felt there was significant value to sending out "courtesy" and "exchange" newsletters to other CORSA individuals and chapters, but that he gets back very little feedback. Ray said that he had received several e-mails while he was president, complementing us on our newsletter. Jim said now and again one of the exchange newsletters we receive has reprinted an article from our newsletter. So there is some evidence that others see and may appreciate our newsletter. After some discussion the board decided that Jim had as much information and feel for the situation as anyone, and that he should make the decision as to which "courtesy" and "exchange" addresses should continue to get the newsletter. Heula said that the only thing from the Sunshine committee was consideration of some time making a contribution to the CORSA Scholarship fund. This is probably through the Corvair Preservation Society. Also she asked Wendell to be sure to bring the tickets for each meeting to use in the 50/50 fund-raiser. Brenda Stickler reported on the Tri-State. The reservations at the Kachina Inn are firm. She is looking for a computer graphics person (Bill Reider was suggested) who could make a sheet of possible bookmarks with a "Road of Life" theme. Heula has enough plastic material left from a former project so the bookmarks could be laminated. They could have a hole punched in them with a tassel attached and added to the goodie bags. Also we need a logo for the Tri-State. (Later Steve talked to Rita Gongora and she says the logo is being worked on.) The next subject was the information that I had gotten from CORSA about their records of who were in our membership and who were CORSA members. This list had 68 members supposedly in CNM, but there were many errors! Many names on their list are indeed on our membership list, but there were quite a few that we have never heard of. I proposed deleting those we did not have on our list and adding in those we have who aren't on their list, but Jim said before we delete any names, we should ask CORSA what this list is used for. I will check with Harry Jensen before going further. The list is obviously not used for Communique mailings because, for example, Jim Pittman is not on the list as being a CNM member, yet he receives his CORSA Communique regularly and the mailing label is correct so far as his CORSA member and expiration date shows. Upcoming events include the July 4th car show in Santa Fe. We need to check with Tarmo to find out just what is going on this year. To enter a car, you need to be a member of the Santa Fe club and it will cost you $30 if you show up on July 4th and want to get in the car show. There was a rumor that they seem to be gradually pushing cars out so they can get more vendors in. Who knows. Anyway, just looking at the cars is still free of charge and many of us have enjoyed many Fourth of July visits to Santa Fe in the past. Also on July 4th is the potluck at Kevin and Leslie Sullivan's place in Corrales. It is in the evening for convenience to watch fireworks displays. There will be more information elsewhere in this newsletter with a map. On July 12th we will have the next Old Route 66 cleanup. The starting time is 08:00 at this time of year because we need to get it done before it gets too hot. You will find out at the July meeting if this time is correct and if there will be a chance to go for a meal afterward. August 10th is the Car Council All Clubs picnic at Villanueva State Park. August 23 is the Pot-luck at Dan and Carolyn Palmer's near Tijeras. There will be more information and a map later. Keep the date open. August 30th there will be a TUNA at Pat and Vickie Hall's in Los Lunas. This will start at 10:00 and will knock off from 12 to 1:30 for lunch and then resume. One thing that will be covered is how to keep the rocker panel drains open to prevent rusting out. (Did you know there was such a thing?) Bill Reider will be there to help. It was suggested that instead of having the auction and pot-luck in November, we could have a bingo night. Ray Trujillo will work on this. The date will be November 8th at 6:00 PM. It will be at "House of Covers" where we have often held our potluck auctions. More details will follow. Brenda said bingo instead of an auction was a good idea since they no longer had anything in the garage to bring to the auction. December 6th at 5:30 PM will be the CNM Christmas dinner. This is a Saturday, so there will not be a conflict with church attendance. It is planned for Perennials Restaurant at Osuna and San Mateo. We will have the whole restaurant, and there is plenty of parking. The cost will be between $21 to $22 per person and this will include tax and gratuity. We can bring wine if we want to. The choice will be beef, chicken, fish (probably salmon) or vegetarian. Thanks to Rita Gongora for setting this all up. It was approved by the board. There being nothing else the meeting was adjourned at 18:20. =[CNM]= COMPARISON OF CORSA LIST WITH CNM MEMBER LIST AS OF 5 JUNE 2008 Jim Pittman & Chuck Vertrees Here's a summary of the list Chuck got from CORSA as compared to our list. The long days allow more time for work on Corvairs and other things. However, the blazing heat makes it hard to work except in the mornings and evenings; thus canceling out the usefulness of the extra daylight. Maybe we all need to remember or re-learn mid-afternoon siestas! My new garage remains unfinished with no air conditioning and so I continue to work as a "Shade Tree" mechanic. The "hot" events scheduled for this Summer include Pot luck dinner at the Sullivans' (July), Pot luck at the Palmer's (August), and Pat's combination TUNA and garage tour (August). Fortunately, these events will be in the cooler evenings or will (hopefully) be near shady overhangs. We appreciate members opening up their homes to us and we hope that most of the club members can attend. It should be a little cooler in Santa Fe for the annual car show there on July 4th and at the Villanueva State Park for the car council Picnic in August. I hope all the CNM Members have an enjoyable Summer. Just remember to keep it cool. Sincerely, Mike =[CNM]= BILL REIDER'S SILVER-AND-BLACK Jim Pittman For years we have seen Bill's silver Corsa with black trim around Albuquerque and at club events and I for one have been impressed at how sharp it looks and how well it runs. It sure makes a nice cover illustration, too! Bill tells me he bought the car in 1989, put in a new fuel pump so he could get it to his shop, and started fixing it up to be a nice looking and pleasant driver. He says it was pretty much his "daily driver" from 1989 until last year when he bought a new Chevy Cobalt. The car has seen a lot of highway miles and has been to any number of Corvair events, including a trip to Florida where he stopped by the Corvair Lover's Holiday event (sort of like our Tri-State) near Pensacola. The car started out as a 1965 Corsa but a new engine (now at 50,000 miles) and a 1966 transaxle, along with BMW seats, help it run better. Bill always liked to see "black trim" cars and when it needed painting he picked a silver and black theme. The aluminum and stainless steel trim pieces were powder coated black and the panel under the doors and the tail cove were painted with a special formula Krylon. Right now the car is waiting on a brake job (Bill always has plenty of projects going on so it may take awhile) and then the Silver-and-Black will once again be a nice driving and good looking "show car" to take Bill to Corvair events near and far. =[CNM]= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | July | August | September | | | | | | : : 1 2 3 4 5 | : : : : : 1 2 | : 1 2 3 4 5 6 | | 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 | 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | | 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 | 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | | 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 | 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | | 27 28 29 30 31 : : | 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 | 28 29 30 : : : : | | : : : : : : : | 31 : : : : : : | : : : : : : : | ============================================================================ Wed 2 Jul 7:00 PM Meeting: Highland Senior Center, 131 Monroe NE TONIGHT -- bring your throw-away metal recycle stuff to the meeting! It takes a great club to have a great Tri-State. Our club has always taken pride in how we run our Tri-States and the great attendances reflect how much they are enjoyed. Our 2009 Tri-State is going to be May 29, 30, & 31 in Taos, NM. The Kachina Inn (Best Western) is our lovely host hotel. We have 50 rooms reserved at $69.00 a night including a continental breakfast and Native American dances at 7:00 PM on Friday Night. So far the volunteers for this venture are: Steve & Rita Gongora: Tri-State T-shirts; Bill Reider for Logo items in our goodie bags & Trophy Design; Pat Hall, Tarmo Sutt and John Wiker: Car Show; Sunshine club: Door Prizes, Raffles & Banquet Decorations. Volunteers are still needed to help these folks out and to head up committees for other needs that will come up. I would love to help match your interests and skills with upcoming tasks if you let me know. Every club member can help with door prizes. When you buy two and get one free... can you donate that item? Look on the discount shelf for items in your favorite stores. If you haven't been to a Tri-state, we have had door prizes: Car Polish, Bird Feeders, Fancy Soaps, Corvair model kits, Homemade items, Honey, Homemade craft items, Travel pillows, and even Car Clocks that honk!!! Thanks to all who will help make this a great Tri-State! We are having a perfect start. But because history is a fleeting thing, here is a record of these documents, (and who the editors were) that were published and sent to the members starting from before the formal organization and founding meeting of CORSA on 7 March 1970 in Camp Hill, PA at the home of founder Richard M. Langworth. At this meeting a temporary Board of Directors (BoD) was selected to get the organization going. Richard M. Langworth was one of the several Corvair admirers during the 1960s who conceived of a North American (and later, international) club of Corvair owners and drivers. His initial effort was to place an advertisement describing his intentions in Car and Driver magazine and request that anyone interested contact him. Some 100 people of similar thinking did so, and Richard thus prepared and sent out the first newsletter, a four-page Preliminary Newsletter #1 that was not dated, but went to the recipients around October 1969. The six-page Preliminary Newsletter #2, Richard's last newsletter, followed in December 1969. The eight-page Preliminary Newsletter #3 was dated April 1970, but mailed in May following the Camp Hill founding meeting in March. Jon Ramer took over the Editorship starting with this Newsletter. Preliminary Newsletter #4 was dated Jul/Aug 1970 and was now called the "Corsa News." It was 17 pages in length and contained the proposed constitution and by-laws. The temporary Board of Directors set 1 July 1970 as the "official start" of the International Corvair Club (CORSA) with an elected BoD, approved constitution, by-laws and member dues. So starting in September 1970, editor Jon Ramer initiated the official CORSA "monthly" newsletter with Volume 1, Number 1. This newsletter was now a longer and more comprehensive version, which seemed to have a varying title. This first newsletter was called the "Corsa Bulletin" while No. 2 in October 1970 had the title of "Turbo-Aire Topics." Number 3, dated Dec 1970/Jan 1971, was again called the "Corsa News." As required by the new constitution, besides having the monthly newsletter, CORSA started publishing a glossy, quarterly magazine of Corvair articles and information. Charter member Tony Fiore was the editor and he published the first issue of the "Corsa Quarterly" in June 1971. He continued to publish four issues per year, for a total of 28 issues thru the Summer 1978 issue. Starting in early 1971, Allen LaDrier became the new editor of the monthly newsletter and the name was changed again, this time to "The Windmill"; the name no doubt relating to the Corvair's cooling fan. Volume 1, #4 (continuing the number sequence from before) of the Windmill was published as the Mar/Apr 1971 issue. Issue #5 followed in June 1971. The first CORSA National Convention was held in Chicago on 25 July 1971. It was at this convention that our own Richard (Rick) Norris was elected the first CORSA President for a one year term. The July issue was identified as Volume II, Number 1 and monthly newsletters continued up to #8 (Apr/May 1972) when Mark Ellis took over the editorship. Following #9 in June 1972, the next issue became Volume III, Number 1 in July 1972. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 followed in subsequent months. The newsletter's name was again changed in November 1972, for Volume III, Number 5. The newsletter was now called "The Corsa Communiques" (note the "s" at the end), with Mark Ellis still editor. This title probably was chosen to echo the name of the 1962-66, Chevrolet- published "Corvair Communiques" magazine. With the December 1972 issue being identified as Volume 3, No. 6, a renumbering took place and the next issue (Jan 1973) was jumped to Volume 4, Number 1. For Volume 5, #6/7, (Jun/Jul 1974) Ed Connolly started as the new editor taking over from Mark Ellis. Then a series of editors followed with Scotty Smathers starting in January 1975, followed by Mrs. Scotty Smathers (her choice of names) in May 1975. Mark Ellis substituted for Mrs. Scotty Smathers from Jan 1976 to Aug 1976, and then she returned as editor in Sept 1976, continuing until August 1978. When the new professional-management group, Marcus Associated Services (MAS), headed by Hal Marcus, was engaged by the Board of Directors in the Summer of 1978, Al Audleman became the new editor of the monthly newsletter and the name was changed to "The Corsa Communique." At this time, the Corsa Quarterly magazine edited and published by Tony Fiore was discontinued, and the monthly newsletter was upgraded to a magazine-style with more content, and a flashier presentation, combining the features of both the newsletter and the previous "Quarterly" magazine. Volume 1, Number 1 of the new Corsa Communique was published in September 1978 with Al Audleman as editor. Al Audleman continued to edit the Corsa Communique until February 1984 even after CORSA had transferred its business management to a new management group, Associated Management Center. AMC in conjunction with CORSA's Mike McGowan continued to produce the monthly magazine under the direction of Feature Editor, Pete Koehler. When CORSA members Harry Jensen and Mike McGowan proposed a more economical and efficient business management plan and editorship, the CORSA Board of Directors accepted them to handle the CORSA business affairs starting in February 1987, with Mike now as editor of the Communique and Harry the new business manager. Since then, Harry has been our CORSA business manager and Mike has continued to edit, produce and improve the Communique winning many awards for our high-quality monthly magazine. Last year, 2007, Harry and Mike celebrated their 20th anniversary of CORSA business management. [ Reprinted from VEGAS VAIRS VISION Vol 8 Nr 6 June 2008 ] =[CNM]= SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman Seven Years Ago - July 2001 - Volume 27 - Nr. 7 - Issue 310 The cover had four photos from our June Mystery Tour, organized by Jerry Goffe. The photos were made at Bien Mur near I-25 and Tramway. If you went to that spot today you'd see a changed landscape: the huge Sandia Casino now dominates the northern skyline! Sylvan reported new members: Tamara & Anthony Couture, owners of a nice yellow 1964 convertible, and Barbara, Gordon and Steve Johnson. No mention of the Corvair(s) owned by the Johnsons. Wendell said we had $5712 in the bank. Our Sponsor Joe Trujillo said that Galles was having a car show in June and would like to have some nice Corvairs. Steve Gongora reported on our new embroidered jacket patches. We discussed the upcoming Route 66 Diamond Jubilee and decided it was not well organized, was being held in the wrong place, and would cost too much. Could we have a car show on Central near Richmond NE instead? We talked about a Fall Aspencade to the Shidoni Art Studio near Tesuque and Pojoaque. We discussed sending our newsletters to the western CORSA directors, including the new Western director in Canada. Mark mentioned the idea of sending newsletters by e-mail. Your editor thought we were nowhere near ready to do that. President Hurley's column was written from a hotel room in Houston and the high humidity there prompted thoughts of the Corvair's front fresh air vent windows. These vent windows, and no engine up front, allowed many of us to do quite well without air conditioning. Hurley reminded us of the campout at Ruth's cabin in the Jemez and the State Fair car show in September. Del wrote a "tech tip" that found all the positive (there weren't any) and negative (there were many) results of not replacing the oil filler cap and then driving around for awhile. Finally, a tech tip by Brent Covey borrowed from the "VAIR-IETY" newsletter told, in three pages, not only all you needed to know about late model wheel alignment, but how to do it yourself! Fourteen Years Ago - July 1994 - Volume 20 - Nr. 7 - Issue 226 The club presented a commemorative award, reproduced on the cover, to Terry Price for hazardous duty at the Pagosa Springs Tri-State Meet last month. Yes, someone's accidental firearm discharge put him in peril. We had $873 in the bank. The Museum car show had 440 vehicles but Corvair turnout was disappointing. LeRoy provided photos. At the Pagosa Springs Tri-State there were 91 Corvairs. Denver had the biggest turnout and we planned to host next year's event at Red River. Kay Sutt wrote a super report on the Colorado event. We planned a Saturday tech session to demonstrate Heim joint carb linkage. We looked forward to the Santa Fe July Fourth car show, an All-Chevy show at Galles celebrating their 86th anniversary and a July 10th econorun. Sylvan said new members Clint and Angela Collins were married in June. New member Bert Weil was restoring a 1964 sedan. Tech tips: Steve Gongora told us how to finish back window trim. Larry Blair told us how to prevent Corvair skin cancer with a screen under the front air intake. Harry "The Tin Man" warned about condensation during storage. Denny Myers told about proper installation of a Chevy S-10 air dam on late Corvairs. Finally, we reprinted an article on Don Yenko and his Corvair Stinger race cars. Twenty-one Years Ago - July - 1987 - Vol. 13 - Nr. 7 - Issue 142 The cover was a Mark Morgan fantasy. We had $633 to spend. The library van's seats were done and body work was the next step. Corvairs at the Museum car show were scattered, not grouped. Eleven Corvairs went to Ouray and total attendance was 65. Jerry showed us a video of the Ouray trip. Clayborne told us the technique of "sparking" bearing races to keep them from spinning in front wheel hubs. More tech tips: connect your engine ground straps so your brake cable won't melt. Things to do when rebuilding an engine. Easy removal of weatherstrips. Using a test lamp to check electrical circuits. An Otto Mechanic cartoon strip illustrated a new use for Armor All. Finally, this was the first CNM newsletter to feature a set of "Burma Shave" signs scattered through the issue. Twenty-eight Years Ago - July - 1980 - Vol. 6 - Nr. 7 - Issue 58 The cover showed a mid-sixties NSU Prinz 1000 with styling flowing directly from the 1960 Corvair. New members were Del Patten, Sheldon Dike and Ike's son John Meissner. Bill Reider gave a talk on Corvair mufflers, especially using "turbo" mufflers on non-turbo cars. Jim reported on a CAR AND DRIVER article on the most significant cars of the last 25 years... the Corvair was mentioned because it "opened the door to government regulation of the automobile" -- sadly, no mention of its intrinsic values. Jim included a book review: "The (in)Compleat Corvair Story" by Dave Newell. Technical: Carl Johnson commented on how to connect a condenser to a generator: it goes to the ARMATURE terminal, not to the FIELD terminal. And, why is it there in the first place? To help suppress radio noise. =[CNM]= ******************************************************************************** Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, a chartered chapter of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
