He has done an excellent job of keeping our bills paid and up-to-date and reporting to us each month our exact financial status. We will miss his little jokes about "Taking a cruise" and "Going on an extended vacation" and "Buying that new Ford GT-40 he's been dreaming about" with our Club's treasury money. We celebrated his work in our November membership meeting on November 5th, with what I was told was his favorite cake - "Devil's Food"! (Please note that, since no one has ever heard of his refusing any dessert offered to him, it's possible this isn't his absolute favorite.) Wendell, we thank you so much for a job well done. And we are glad that you will be available to our newly elected Treasurer Robert Gold, for consultation and advice through the coming years. You know that these young folks need occasional mature guidance! We love and appreciate you loads! =[CNM]= NOVEMBER MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 19:05 at Highland Senior Center on 11/5/08. There were 32 in attendance, including all officers. President Mike Stickler asked for thanks to Ollie Scheflow for his running of the "Old Route 66" cleanup for another year. The last one went very fast because there were ten members who showed up for the project. Vice President Pat Hall said that he and a couple others had gone to Taos to cover some items on next year's Tri-State. Kachina Inn will set aside an area where we can sell T-shirts. The car show will be along the frontage road in front of the Kachina Inn. There will be a police escort for a tour parade through Taos before the show. There will be a place set up for washing off the cars before the parade and show. Kachina Inn will also help supply goodie bags. New Treasurer Robert Gold said that he and Wendell Walker had finally gotten everything fixed with the bank. He reported that CNM had $517.74 in the checking account and $2,769.14 in the GMAC account for a total of $3,286.88. He will have a spread sheet at the next meeting for those that would like to see it. Also thanks to Wendell Walker who was treasurer for 13 (or was it 14) years. Secretary Chuck Vertrees announced that May 30th (we'll all be at the Tri-State) will be his and Julia's 60th wedding anniversary. As a result, all five of their children, respective spouses plus assorted grandchildren (possibly some great grandchildren) are all coming to the Tri-State. I have reserved 9 rooms, but we added another ten to those set aside for other attendees. All the children grew up driving Corvairs of one kind or another We had a guest, Charlie Mann, who will be joining the club. I am sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to him and get some more information. Jim Pittman, newsletter editor, said that next month will be a short month and anyone with items for the newsletter will need to get them in as soon as possible. Also, Jim had an "August April Fool" spot on his web page with a prize for the first person who found it. Ray Trujillo found it, and got his choice of one of three types of Corvair Oil Filter: AC white, AC blue and Clark's. Ray chose the Clark's filter. Ray explained that the April Fool had to do with the number of coyotes in two pictures taken at Dan and Carolyn Palmer's party in the mountains. We doubt the photos were genuine and suspect photoshop hanky-panky. Heula Pittman reminded everyone to see the newsletter for a list of the items needed as gifts at the Christmas party. This year the items will be going to the UNM Children's Hospital and the Carrie Tingley Children's Hospital. Members were also reminded that the coming Saturday was the date for the Bingo Party at House of Covers, and the November breakfast would be at Shoney's at Menaul & Louisiana at 09:30. December will have our Christmas party and dinner at Perennials, starting at 17:30 or 5:30 PM. Rita Gongora will contact everyone to find out if they want chicken, beef, or fish (salmon) so the restaurant will know what to prepare. There will not be monthly breakfasts during December and January because of the many things happening those months. Anyone with suggestions for activities during 2009 should please contact one of the officers. We love to have any help you can provide for club activities. Cary Hubbard and Geoffrey Johnson announced that they were going together to start a business of restoring Corvairs and Citroens. The meeting was adjourned at 19:33 and was followed by a presentation from Color Works. They are a company in Los Lunas who are nationally known as automobile restorers. =[CNM]= NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 17:05 at Ray Trujillo's print shop on 11/19/08. Present were Jim & Heula Pittman, Ray Trujillo, Pat & Vickie Hall, Mike & Brenda Stickler, Robert Gold and Chuck & Julia Vertrees. There were no officers' reports other than Robert Gold's first report to the Board as Treasurer. Robert is using Microsoft Money and Microsoft Excel to hold the data and print reports. He presented us with a detailed spread sheet. It was very detailed. As of the Board meeting CNM had $607.34 in the checking account and $2,769.14 in the GMAC account for a total of $3,376.48. He also received the GMAC statement which showed another $12.03 interest added to the GMAC account. In working with the GMAC account and trying to find out some information about it, Robert ran into the old frustrating "If you want etc. press 1" cycle. He spent quite a bit of time before he finally got to talk to a human but they were not very helpful either. It seems that there are several signatories on the GMAC account and they all have to concur to add another name. We think the account was set up in 1996 and we have gone through several treasurers since then. Robert will check with Bill Reider since Bill was instrumental in setting up the first account with our treasurer at that time, probably Will Davis. It was suggested that if they give too much trouble we could just have Wendell Walker close the account and put the money someplace locally where it is readily available. It was mentioned that we have a new member, Charles Mann. It was bought up that new members were supposed to receive a name badge and a copy of "Care and Feeding" and a membership roster. We need to follow up on this. Thanks were expressed to Ray Trujillo for the Bingo Party earlier in the month. The thing was a success and everyone seemed to have a good time. Ray turned over $270.00 profit to the treasurer. The Bingo payout was 50% of the income from sale of the cards. Also thanks to Steve Gongora for taking pictures during the party. Brenda Stickler reported on the Tri-State. There are already 28 rooms reserved out of the 65 set aside for the event. Shirley at Kachina is sending Brenda a packet of the menu selection available for the banquet. We will have a room for registration and T-shirt sales. It was decided that this should also be a sort of hospitality area with snacks and drinks available. Much of this could be supplied by club members. There will be Indian dancers on Friday night. Whether there will be a bar-b-que that night is still up in the air. Bill Reider is in charge of the logo and should have it ready shortly. We discussed door prizes and how to avoid slowing down the banquet with too many. Heula said she purchased a dry-erase board to show the number of the door prizes and we all expressed confidence that Anne Mae could expedite handing out door prizes. The Christmas dinner on the 6th of December is all set. Details are elsewhere in the newsletter. At the December meeting everyone will need to be prepared to indicate whether they want beef, chicken or fish. It was decided that there will not be any breakfast meetings during December or January. Also there will not be a Board meeting in December. Any required business can be conducted by phone or e-mail. Richard and Gayle Finch indicated that they will be coming to the Christmas party. We do not have a club activity planned for January. Our usual February activity is a garage tour. This has often in the past been planned by LeRoy Rogers. Pat Hall will contact him and see if he has any plans. Pat knows of a couple of possibilities in the Los Lunas area. If LeRoy hasn't planned anything they could get together. At the Christmas dinner, we need to start seeing who might want to arrange the annual birthday dinner in March. We'll need to find a restaurant soon. The meeting was adjourned at 18:00. Members are reminded that they are always welcome to the Board meeting which is the second Wednesday after the regular chapter meeting, although, as noted above, we will not meet next month. =[CNM]= December HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to eight CNMers: Dick Cochran December 5 Ruth Boydston December 7 Isaac Trujillo December 9 Jimmy Arellanes December 16 Bernadette Gongora December 22 Sara Gold December 30 Fred Riggs December 31 Sally Williams December 31 December HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes to three couples: Elizabeth & Mark Domzalski December 11 Barbara & Gordon Johnson December 18 Lori & Joel Nash December 31 =[CNM]= BINGO NIGHT REPORT Ray Trujillo Hello everyone! We had a good turnout for CNM's bingo night and I believe everyone who attended had a fun time. We played bingo four times and the winners were Kelly Gold, Dan & Carolyn Palmer, and Sylvan Zuercher. We also had about ten items for silent auction and CNM would like to thank all who donated those items or contributed to purchasing bingo cards. CNM raised $270 after bingo payouts and purchases of pizza, hot dogs, sodas, chips and cookies. Also CNM would like to thank Steve and Rita Gongora for hosting bingo night and Wendell Walker for supplying the popcorn. Steve provided photos which are on the web page and nearby in the newsletter. -- Ray Trujillo =[CNM]= CHRISTMAS DINNER PREVIEW Rita Gongora All are looking forward to our annual holiday celebration to be held at Perennials Restaurant on Saturday December 6th starting at 5:30 PM. It's at 6001 San Mateo Blvd NE, at the intersection with Osuna Road NE. See map. Their phone is 888-5800. Emma Rogers and Lee Reider have organized another benefit for children's toys (no dolls or stuffed animals) so bring your (unwrapped) toys to the dinner! This will be our club's last event for the year 2008! Entrees / Non-Alcoholic Drinks / Dessert - tax & gratuity = $22.48 per adult and $11.19 for kids 12 and under. Call Rita at 292-5570 with menu item choice. Chicken Kiev (Bake, Breaded & Stuffed) / Salmon / Top Sirloin / Vegetables. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you! =[CNM]= STICK TO VAIRS Mike Stickler As 2008 comes to an end, I want to thank all the CNM officers and committee members for their help in making this another successful year for our club. Supreme kudos go to Jim Pittman for keeping us informed with the finest newsletter in the land. All those who headed special monthly events brought us great times together and we appreciate all you have done for us. Looking forward to the "Brave New World" of 2009 it seems that the economy is slowing down rather quickly. Recessions come along about every eight to ten years no matter how they tinker with policies in Washington D.C. This one looks live it may be deeper than most. With even once-mighty G.M. in trouble, folks everywhere are cutting back on all purchases, which of course is the prudent reactions due to a down-turn. I would encourage Corvair owners to buck that trend in regard to ordering parts from our Corvair vendors. If Mervyn's closes its doors you can still buy underwear at dozens of other outlets. However, with Corvair parts, only a small handful of suppliers are around to provide the special parts we need. Let's provide our own "rescue plan" by continuing and even increasing our purchases from Clark's etc. I am looking forward to our new year together and especially our Tri-State in Taos, in 2009. Meantime, keep those Corvair engines going!!! =[CNM]= TAOS TRI-STATE TRUCKS ON Brenda Stickler We have picked up momentum for the Tri-State. We will be increasing reserved rooms available in December by 12, for a total of 62. This is the first true opportunity for our Club to claim back the Tri-State attendance trophy in years. We should go for it. Please, call in your reservation as soon as you feel certain you might be able to attend. (Canceling in April of next year is fine... if something changes.) We do have a great group working on our Tri-State logo and they hope to get this completed by December. There is a Taos phone book I requested floating around with the Car Show group. We need someone to start looking up Taos car dealers for bag trinkets and door prizes from those dealers. (Or get that phone book to me and I'll get someone to help us with that.) I am working on details for the Banquet on Saturday night. We plan to give a Meat, Chicken or Vegan choice for the Banquet. If anyone wants to head any kind of planning group for decorations for the Banquet, please contact me. I really am too busy to take that on... but would love to drop in and help when I can. Well, I know we have selected a lovely spot for our Tri-State. The town of Taos is a very "walking friendly" type town with really great shops. If you looked up that web site from last month's article you will see there are museums, parks and of course Taos Pueblo, all worth exploring. We are down to our last five months, and I think we are really doing great. Many thanks to our Terrific Taos Tri-State Team!!!! =[CNM]= ============================================================================ C O R V A I R S o f N E W M E X I C O C O M I N G E V E N T S ============================================================================ | | | | | December 2008 | January 2009 | February | | | | | | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | | : 1 2 3 4 5 6 | : : : : 1 2 3 | : : : : : : : | | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 | | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 | 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 | | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 | 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 | | 28 29 30 31 : : : | 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 | 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 | ============================================================================ Wed 3 Dec 7:00 PM Meeting: Highland Senior Center, 131 Monroe NE Wed 3 Dec 8:30 PM (time approx.) after our meeting, we go to the 66 Diner at 1405 Central NE (between University Blvd and I-25) Sat 6 Dec 5:30 PM Christmas Party: Perennials Restaurant: San Mateo & Osuna Wed 17 Dec 5:00 PM Board Meeting: Business Printing Service - 4316 Silver SE Fri 26 Dec 9:00 PM Newsletter Deadline - Jim Pittman 2009 = MEISSNER AWARD: The nomination form will be in the January newsletter. I bought a new 1960 Corvair in early 1960 and its mechanical fuel pump was still working just fine when I traded the car in late 1964. The car and its fuel pump had 99,500 miles on them the day I traded the car for a brand new 1965 Corvair Corsa coupe. I drove that car for 75,000 miles and traded it for a new 1970 Buick Station Wagon. The mechanical fuel pump was still working great when I traded the car off. After only 9 months, I sold the Buick V-8 and bought the 1965 Corvair 4-door that I am still driving today, November 2008. This car has about 500,000 miles on it now and the 4-carb 140 hp engine has never been overhauled. I did have to replace both heads because of dropped valve seats in 1980 and in 1986. It starts quickly and does not smoke! It does use about a quart of Pennzoil 40 wt. HD oil every 1,000 miles. According to my written notes, I did not replace the first mechanical fuel pump until 1992 when the engine had over 290,000 miles on it. Why did I replace the original fuel pump on that car? Because "Everybody was doing it!!" My reasoning at the time was that I did not want to have fuel pump failure while on a long (or a short) trip. A RUN OF DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMPS My new fuel pump on the 1965 Corvair 4-door (in 1992) lasted about 1,010 miles and then began leaking at the diaphragm area. So, I bought another new fuel pump and began using it, and the second replacement pump began leaking within 1,000 miles also. I cured the problem by installing a used pump. I think I must have installed a good used pump because it lasted me for the next 10 years and at least 125,000 miles. Then I bought at least 4 new fuel pumps from a CORSA supplier. These fuel pumps began to leak at the diaphragm area within an astounding 1,010 miles each. I then did a scientific study of why the fuel pumps were failing and found that there was a simple reason for the failures. The manufacturers were using silicone-based neoprene sheets to make the diaphragms, and the silicone sheets did not have any fabric in the middle as the AC Delco pumps had used. As most Corvair owners know, silicone and gasoline are natural enemies and gasoline always wins the battle! The gasoline begins to melt the silicone on contact. TOWED TO LAKE TAHOE IN 1998 Several CORSA members may remember that Gayle and I had to be hauled on the back of a tow truck the last 25 miles down Highway 50 when were headed to the CORSA National Convention at Lake Tahoe one year. And of course Christy Barden was there with his camera, to photograph us when we arrived at the convention parking lot. The problem turned out to be a defective fuel pump that had, you guessed it, only 1,010 miles on it when it failed. We had driven the Ultra Van to the Fan Belt Toss in Palm Springs, California and some around the state before heading to the National. Our salvation was that I had installed a Facet electric fuel pump to prime the carburetors when the Corvair engine had not been driven for at least a week. One problem with Corvairs is that the carburetors have a tendency to dry out from the heat of the air cooled engine after the hot engine has been shut off. I can even see fuel boiling in the clear plastic Fram brand fuel filter on our 1963 Monza after the engine has been shut down. That is why I use a Facet brand electric fuel pump on Corvairs that are usually parked for more than a week. THE SOLUTION! I found a supplier in Massachusetts (not Clark's) who manufactures fuel pump kits to the original specifications, and I bought several of his kits and tested them. What I found was that this kit manufacturer uses only non-silicone diaphragm material that has fabric reinforcement in the material, and that makes the diaphragm last at least 75,000 miles in my use on my Corvairs. I did have to replace one of these new kits in New Brunswick three years ago while Gayle and I were driving our 1969 Ultra Van to Prince Edward Island in Canada. The kit began leaking at the diaphragm and caused us to smell gasoline, not a safe situation. We always keep at least 3 dry chemical fire extinguishers and one Halon(tm) on board the Ultra Van. Our Ultra Van engine had over 75,000 miles on the new kit at that time. INSTALLING ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS I have been told that an electric fuel pump will not suck gas and that they must be installed as close to the gas tank as possible, but I have not found that to be true. We have installed our Facet brand fuel pumps on the firewall bulkhead of our Ultra Van and on the firewall of our 1961 Rampside to act as a back-up for filling dry carburetors and even for road operation, and both Corvair vehicles operate just fine with the fuel pumps at least 9 feet from the fuel tanks, 14 feet on the Ultra Van. Note that Facet brand fuel pumps can be had in at least four different pressures. Coming back from Lake Tahoe, we drove all the way back to Santa Barbara, California with a by-pass fitting on the mechanical fuel pump to keep the gasoline from catching fire as it leaked out of the defective fuel pump. I hate the pounding noise that an electric fuel pump makes, but it can be ignored if you plug your ears with cotton. There are some quiet, gear driven fuel pumps that are available, and I own one, but I have not installed and tested it yet. All new fuel injected cars use gear driven pumps for quietness. The gears in a Chrysler vehicle fuel pump are about the diameter of a pencil and are very quiet, but most are very high pressure units, such as 60 psi. You want a fuel pump that puts out only 4 to 8 psi for a carbureted Corvair. Where to buy the GOOD Kits Antique Auto Parts Cellar Tom Hannaford, Jr. P O Box 3, South Weymoth, MA 02190 Ph: 781-335-1579 Fax: 781-335-1925 The price of a kit is $32.95 each and shipping is now $12.00 approximately. Tom told me that the kits have been improved some lately, by providing the check valves with more internal clearance to allow for swelling of the neoprene due to the fuel suppliers using acetone and some other chemicals to clean out the factory fuel lines periodically. It is once again possible to have a stock fuel system on our Corvairs and have dependability and safety again! You can tell by its extra shiny cover and the larger hold down screws. It is also made from heavy pot metal at nearly double the weight of an AC Delco fuel pump. Photo # 2. This is a 1960 stock AC Delco fuel pump with the longer push rod and the light case, that weighs only 14 ounces, the preferred pump to re-build. The cover is only about half as shiny as the "bad" fuel pump. Photo # 3. This fuel pump is the replacement fuel pump that has the silicone diaphragm with no fabric reinforcement. At 26 ounces, it is nearly double the weight of the AC Delco fuel pump. It can be rebuilt with a new kit from Antique Auto Parts Cellar. Photo # 4. This is a Facet brand electric "clicker" fuel pump that works well, other than the constant clicking sound it makes. The cost is about $45.00. Photo # 5. This photo is of an in-line rotary fuel pump that uses rotary vanes. It was purchased from Clark's Corvair Parts at the 2003 Flagstaff National Convention, the price was $59.95. It should be quieter if the pressure is low enough. For a carbureted engine you need 4 to 8 psi. Photo # 6. It is a good idea to mount a Fram brand plastic fuel filter just behind the alternator or generator to catch any dirt that could be in the fuel tank or fuel lines. These should be replaced about every 10,000 miles or less. =[CNM]= From: Defarge505 @ aol.com Subject: Good Myth Breaker [This could be a great item for the newsletter -- Wendy] THE 3,000 MILE OIL CHANGE MYTH By Bill Siuru According to a recent study by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, 73 percent of California drivers change their oil more frequently than required. This same scenario no doubt repeats itself across the country. Besides wasting money, this translates into unnecessary consumption of $100-a-barrel oil, much of it imported. Using 2005 data, the Board estimates that Californians alone generate about 153.5 million gallons of waste oil annually, of which only about 60 percent is recycled. Used motor oil poses the greatest environmental risk of all automotive fluids because it is insoluble, persistent, and contains heavy metal and toxic chemicals. One gallon of used oil can foul the taste of one million gallons of water. It's been a misconception for years that engine oil should be changed every 3000 miles, even though most auto manufacturers now recommend oil changes at 5,000, 7,000, or even 10,000 mile intervals under normal driving conditions. Greatly improved oils, including synthetic oils, coupled with better engines mean longer spans between oil changes without harming an engine. The 3000 mile interval is a carryover from days when engines used single-grade, non-detergent oils. For several years, automakers like General Motors, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have installed computerized systems that alert drivers via an instrument panel light when it's time to change oil. As an example, the General Motor Oil Life System (GMOLS) analyzes the engine temperature, rpms, vehicle speeds, and other driving conditions to calculate the rate of engine oil degradation. Then, software calculates when the oil needs to be changed. Other systems work similarly. Because of the many external conditions and parameters that have to be taken into account, calculating the precise maximum service interval using mathematical models alone is difficult. Now, Daimler AG has developed a more direct and precise way to monitor oil quality directly on board a vehicle. Daimler uses a special sensor integrated into the oil circuit to monitor engine oil directly. Oil doesn't wear out, but rather dirt and impurities cause oil to lose its ability to lubricate properly, dictating the need for a change. Daimler uses the oil's "permittivity," that is, the ability to polarize in response to the electric field. If the engine oil is contaminated by water or soot particles, it polarizes to a greater extent and its permittivity increases. To evaluate the quality of the oil, permittivity is measured by applying an AC potential between the interior and exterior pipes of an oil-filled sensor to determine how well the oil transmits the applied electric field. Because not all impurities can be measured with sufficient precision via the electric field method, Daimler also measures the oil's viscosity to detect any fuel that may have seeped into the oil. Daimler researchers measure viscosity while the vehicle is in motion by observing the oil's side-to-side motion in the oil sump. The slower the oil moves, the higher its viscosity. This movement is registered by a sensor and the viscosity is calculated on this basis. A single sensor, along with the information already monitored by on-board computers, is sufficient to determine the various parameters of the engine oil. Daimler will likely use the technology first on its commercial vehicles. Here, large oil reservoirs mean larger quantities of oil can be saved. Plus, a predicted 25 percent increase between service intervals and reduced downtime will be of interest to fleets, and thus justify the added cost of installation. Inside, a quote truly for our time: "Sir John Plumb recently died at the age of ninety. 'Like Voltaire, Plumb held up a historical mirror that had become quite dark with old age. He was not sanguine about our chances of survival, and he likened modern America to the late Roman Empire, circa 300: impossibly overextended, beleaguered by barbarians, aware that all its glories of law and engineering might yet be demolished by incomparably less sophisticated peoples for whom destruction is a vocation and life is expendable.' -- Simon Schama, THE NEW YORKER, November 5, 2001." At our meeting at Galles, Wendell reported we had $5,340.48 in the bank but said we were spending too much, too fast. Mark Martinek gave the Car Council report. Jerry Goffe announced that he is now an official docent and guide at Bosque del Apache and suggested the club make a tour. The CNM Ladies group was still meeting. President Gold complained (?) about the awesome power of his Corvair-Olds V-8 after adjusting the throttle linkage. We planned a potluck and auction in November. Tarmo and Steve received praise for setting up a great tour to Shidoni. Improvements in our dealings with the Galles security team were promised. We all looked forward to our Christmas party. Picked up from Virtual Vairs: Were there Corvair clubs before CORSA? Yes, and several were listed. Tech tips: information on cylinder head temperature and carb synchronizing. Was there a photo of every CNM member in this issue, or just 95% of them? And finally, the index to all the 2001 newsletters. Fourteen Years Ago - Dec 1994 - Volume 20 - Number 12 - Issue 231 A festive cover with toys, singing bears and a couple of small Corvairs. There was little or no business at the meeting. Steve and Rita reported on the auction and pot-luck. The food was delicious and fifty items were auctioned in sixty minutes, bringing in $270. President Larry told us why he missed the meeting: he couldn't pass up a hunting trip. The deer eluded him. Larry also mentioned a high-speed climb up Sedillo Hill during which his Spyder's temperature gauge soared off the scale, due to a separated harmonic balancer. Sylvan told about his adventures at the Palm Springs Great Fanbelt Toss and Swap Meet, an event every Corvair fan should attend at least once. He sold most of what he took, bought a few things, and made enough to cover expenses. Your internet monitor reprinted some political humor to answer the question, What if politicians campaigned via e-mail? A large notice advised us to go to the Sirloin Stockade on December 10th for our Christmas Party. Technical material included the derivation of the word "pitman" as in "pitman arm" and the wonder of a wandering FC which, it turned out, had a major crack in its unit body, letting the support for the steering gear box literally float! Also, Otto Mechanic refuted the theory that filling your tires with helium would reduce weight and thus produce better fuel mileage. Twenty-one Years Ago - Dec 1987 - Volume 13 - Number 12 - Issue 147 Our cover looked like a cut-it-out-yourself jigsaw puzzle. In case we needed to buy anything, we had $451 in the bank. The speaker at our Christmas party was to be the Journal's Jim Arnholtz (later better known as Jim Belshaw) of the Albuquerque Journal. President Reider had suggestions for activities for the coming year. Jerry showed a series of Corvair-related films. Jim reported on the terrific Architecture Tour that Sylvan put on. Steve provided answers to last month's Football Quiz. Our annual index listed 1987 articles and tech tips. Twenty-eight Years Ago - Dec 1980 - Volume 6 - Number 12 - Issue 63 Our cover was a photo of our new officers: Sylvan Zuercher, Bill Reider, Mary Twilley and Robin DeVore. We had $282 in the bank. We planned a "Ladies' Day" technical session to discuss common car problems and what to do about them. We discussed ways we could help out with the 1981 national CORSA convention in Denver. A tech tip suggested using a magnetic drain plug in the oil pan to catch stray metal particles. An article by the editor suggested that low-riders were superior to hot-rodders. An index for the 1980 newsletter finished up the issue. =[CNM]= CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO INDEX FOR 2008 EVERY MONTH OR AS NEEDED: Dues Due ..................... WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED? Jim Pittman Corvairs of New Mexico and CORSA seem to be continuing in good health. We have had our meetings and newsletters every month and a fair number of well-attended events. CORSA Communique continues to provide great stories and interesting and useful technical articles. Our Corvair Parts vendors offer tons of stuff to keep our Corvairs running. We wonder when gasoline prices will start to creep back up. We wonder when old cars will be legislated out of driveability. Everyone is worrying about our economic woes and the severity of the coming (already here?) recession. Is the recession an opportunity? Will we be forced to have some truth from the financial institutions? Will we finally see some truth-telling by the government? Will most of the people of the country finally quit our partisan quarreling and get together to fix our problems? As trite as it seems, tomorrow really is the first day of the rest of our lives. The country and people who produced so much and made such efforts to fight and win the Second World War should be able to re-focus on the problems we all face -- and solve them.
