The Club will mail in your National Dues when you renew, if you send us the renewal form from your CORSA Communique! =[CNM]= DECEMBER MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 19:00 on 12/3/08 at Highland Senior Center. There were 22 members present including all officers. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. President Mike Stickler announced that, due to the busy holiday season, there would not be a board meeting during December. Treasurer Robert Gold reported that CNM had $677.34 in the checking account and $2,781.17 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,458.51. He also made available a work sheet for the month showing income and expenditures. This will continue to be available for those interested. He has also gotten the signatures fixed on the GMAC account. Robert also received a letter from Clark's Corvair Parts asking for another fifty "Care and Feeding" Books. The same price as the last order was OK. We will send ten copies immediately and get an update printed shortly and then send the other forty copies. If any changes are needed, contact Bill Reider immediately. The Bingo Party at House of Covers was a success thanks to Ray Trujillo. Those who attended reported an enjoyable time. The club made a net profit of $270.00. Sylvan Zuercher reported that we have two new members in the club, Charles Mann who was at the last meeting, and James O'Connell who lives in Deming. James has a 1962 Monza with a 110 engine and also has an 8/10 Cord replica which has a 140 HP Corvair engine. We had as a guest tonight, Russ McDuffie's father, Phil McDuffie. There was no Car Council report because there will not be another Car Council meeting until January. Heula Pittman had some nice 2009 calendars that were sent in by Brenda Stickler. They are available for $1.00 each. The money goes to the Tri-State fund. Several were sold. Rita Gongora attended the meeting to discuss the club's annual Christmas Dinner. She got the last of the meal preferences for the dinner at Perennials Restaurant. Robert asked that we round up the price to the nearest 25 cents, so prices will be $22.50 for adults and $11.25 for children. Please bring some change when you come. Possible future events were discussed. Let the Board know if you have ideas for club activities. Art Gold volunteered to run the 50/50 at future meetings. Pat Hall will arrange a garage tour for February. We need someone to volunteer setting up the Anniversary Dinner in March. In recent years we have usually had 40 to 50 people in attendance. Heula said she would help whoever volunteers. Dave Huntoon said that he found a copy of a film called "The Methodical Man" in the library van. This is a promotional piece made for GM by the Jam Handy company in Detroit. It is on 16 mm film. LeRoy said that a VHS copy had been made of the film years ago. It was suggested that we borrow a working projector so we could show the film at a meeting, since it has been a long time since we have run it. Also, it was suggested that we find out about making a DVD of it for sale to other clubs. Cary Hubbard knows someone who does this kind of work. He will ask them to find out about copyright and everything else we'd need to know about transferring to DVD. Our last meeting for 2008 was adjourned at 19:45. I'm pretty soft spoken, so I guess someone should ask Brenda to get me a bullhorn for Christmas. Well, as the snow falls it's time to start planning next year's activities. We will start with our annual garage tour, now being planned. Also, our 35th Anniversary dinner is now in the planning stage. Of course the Taos Tri-State in late May will be a tremendous event. The rest of the year will be filled with other traditional events. I hope that you members can think of some new and interesting events to spice things up. We will meet at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (2401 12th St NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104) at 2:00 PM on Saturday March 7th for lunch. There will be four menu items to choose from, including a vegetarian selection. The price will be $17.00 per plate. We will be able to bring in a birthday cake if we wish. We'll be in our own dining room and will have a PA microphone for our convenience. The price of the lunch includes a non-alcoholic beverage and there's a pay-as-you-go bar available. Make your plans now to join us for the club's birthday! =[CNM]= SUCCESSFUL TOY COLLECTION Lee Reider & Emma Rogers On December 6th our members brought many donated toys to our Christmas dinner. Some members chose to donate money to be used to purchase whatever items were needed to make the collection complete. At least one member who was not able to attend the party gave money for a toy. We'd guess the value of the donated toys to be approximately $300 to $400. We took the toy donations to the UNM Children's Hospital playroom where they will be provided to both the Carrie Tingley Hospital children as well as the UNM Hospital children. We appreciate the generosity of everyone for this worthy cause. We can always count on our members when we call on them. Tell me your best guess. -- Thanks, Heula =[CNM]= THE IKE MEISSNER AWARD Jim Pittman Really old-timers remember Ike Meissner as an engineer from Los Alamos who owned many Corvairs, worked on many more, drove to Albuquerque to CNM meetings nearly every month, wrote excellent newsletter articles and provided parts, knowledge and mechanical help to all who asked. Ike died in 1980 and in 1986 some of us discussed a club award to honor Ike's memory and to celebrate service to the club by contemporary members. The first annual Ike Meissner Award was presented in December 1987. Over the years we continued the award but not every year with the same level of attention. From time to time a complaint would surface: new members were not hearing anything about Ike Meissner, new members were not told the reason for the award, new members never knew Ike or why he was important. In 1997 a committee was set up to address these problems. The rules for nominating and selecting a recipient were formalized and responsibilities were spelled out. The annual awards continued. Recently the same old refrain has been heard: "There's almost no one left in the club who knew Ike Meissner." Sylvan called for a committee to re-define the award, or maybe to abolish it, or maybe to declare a moratorium. Maybe in January we'll decide. In the meantime, we could consider Ike Meissner a "myth" of the club's ancient past and celebrate those who best exemplify the spirit of the club in the present. Please be thoughtful and fill out the nomination form to help select a worthy recipient for 2009. AB Tire Co., 2848 Girard Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM - 505-884-0686 They are located between Candelaria and Menaul NE. =[CNM]= REPRINTED FROM: Vegas Vairs Vision, October 2008, Las Vegas, Nevada A CENTER MOUNTED 4-BBL CARBURETOR ON THE 140 HP ENGINE By Bob Helt The four separate Rochester carburetors used on the stock 140 horsepower engine have definite limitations. For example, the linkage is complex: it is difficult to set up and maintain correctly. In addition, there are four carburetors that must be cleaned and rebuilt when the time comes for that maintenance. Also the setup allows for no intake tuning to maximize mixture flow within a desired rpm range. So it is natural that Corvair owners would want to eliminate these deficiencies and improve performance. Thus, at least two different vendors have offered conversion kits that replaced the four stock carburetors with a small-cfm 4-barrel carburetor center-mounted on four runners over the top of the engine. Carburetors most commonly used with this setup are the Holley 390 cfm (#8007 of the 41504160 series) or the 450 cfm Carter Aluminum AFB used on the Valiant 270 CI engines and other cars. The Holley is now the most available and most used carburetor so we will address our comments toward this carburetor mostly. The Holley 8007 carburetor comes with vacuum operated secondaries and an electric choke so this is the most desirable carburetor. Also available is the less desirable #6299 that doesn't have the electric choke. There are several distinct advantages using this center mounted 4-barrel setup with either type of carburetor. First, it eliminates the linkage wear and adjustment problems of the stock setup, and of course there is only one carburetor to rebuild. But maybe just as important is the 6 lb-ft max mid-range torque (and horsepower) improvement due to the intake runner tuning. See the accompanying graph of torque and horsepower comparing the stock setup on a stock, manual transmission, 140 hp engine to that of the center mounted 4-bbl setup on the same engine. This data was taken from actual dynamometer tests witnessed by your author. But like most things there are also some downsides to using this setup too. The worst and maybe most annoying is the need to recalibrate the 4-bbl carburetor to match the Corvair engine. No. Sorry, this is just not a simple bolt on setup, although Clark's claim that their carburetors are ready to go. You may have to tinker with the carburetor to get it right. The main problems will probably be with the accelerator pump and power valve, getting them right for your engine. In addition some re-jetting may be necessary. Hesitation may also be a problem at low speeds. Actual changes and modifications are beyond the scope of this article so it is recommended you get a copy of HP'S Holley Carburetor Book or seek some expert advice before making any changes. ( See: http://autoxer.skiblack.com/carbs.html#holley ) In warm climates, you may not need the choke to be operational but in colder climates the electric choke will be necessary. Once you have the carburetor working pretty well, you will be faced with the possibility of carburetor icing at low temperatures and moist conditions. This can be a problem after cold startup but once the engine is warmed the problem should not be of concern. In addition, due to its design, the Holley has many (about 20) places where fuel can leak and be a fire hazard. So when you must rebuild your carburetor, use only reusable gaskets. These reusable gaskets will allow you to partially disassemble the carburetor when necessary and then reassemble without replacing the gaskets each time. Lastly, you will note from the graph that while the 2000-4500 rpm mid-range shows a much improved torque, at higher speeds the torque is worse than stock. This is because of the resonant tuning that occurs in the runners. Thus mid-range performance is greatly enhanced while high speed suffers. This setup then is great for the street but undesirable for racing. Eric Schakel On a recent Pig trip, my cell phone began the pathetic beeping indicating a battery nearing death. Being a resourceful Corvair owner, I had the car charger with me! I pulled the "Cigarette Lighter" from the socket, plugged in the charger, and was fascinated to NOT see the light come on. No amount of wiggling would make a connection. I shut the phone off. Cars of yesterday were all equipped with resistance coils intended to ignite your tobacco products. Remove your Corvair's lighter socket, and you'll find it a heavy-sleeved metal object, with stout terminals. Remember, it's a high amp socket - no wonder it has the largest gauge wire under the dash! For heat dispersion as well as electrical separation, the inner ground sleeve is far from the plus-charged base plate. The shallow depth of the ground sleeve is also why many auto charger plugs won't work. New autos have ground sleeves that extend nearly the full depth of the socket. If you value 12 volt accessories more than the ability to light your fires, consider this inexpensive remedy: Radio Shack sells a 12v, 10 amp Accessory Outlet (270-1556) for around $8. Remove your chrome-sleeved existing socket, and splice the wires to the new ones provided. You'll have to enlarge the dash hole slightly for the new socket, but the black plastic replacement snaps in and works just fine with all of my car plugs. Just don't try to use your lighter with it! For December we met at Galles, Robert Gold presiding. We had $5522 in total financial resources. Reports on the pot luck and auction and the Christmas party were uniformly positive. Jerry Goffe planned a tour of Bosque del Apache for us. John Wiker suggested a tech session at Del Norte High School. Mark Domzalski gave us the latest news on the CORSA Convention in Flagstaff. Larry Blair gave a talk on efforts by the city to protect and guarantee our water supply. This year's Tri-State was planned for Grand Junction, Colorado, hosted by Rocky Mountain. Anne Mae Gold reported on activities of the CNM Ladies Group. LeRoy Rogers previewed the February Garage Tour to Dave's Auto Repair and to the fascinating Doll Museum. At our Christmas dinner Rita Gongora presented the 2001 Meissner Award to Oliver Scheflow. For those who want a table of all the gear ratios for all Corvair transmissions, look on page 9 of this issue. But wait, the Powerglide ratios were not included. And for those who have never had a harmonic balancer slowly come apart and chew up the oil filter, Jim had his story to tell. A lot of photos were scattered through this issue, and it finished up with a list of all 55 CNM members. Fourteen Years Ago - January 1995 - Volume 21 - Number 1 - Issue 232 Our cover featured a nice drawing of a Rampside. President Larry ran our meeting. We had $1520 to spend, $125 of which was reserved for convention expenses. We made $275 at last month's pot-luck and auction. A Wurlitzer organ and some snow tires were offered in the FOR SALE section. Larry's "Noxious Fumes" column reported on a great Christmas dinner at the Sirloin Stockade. He reported on seeing a video tour of the Holy Land by Bill and Lee Reider and hearing Chuck and Del sing with the Enchanted Mesa Chorus. Larry also authored a tech tip on how to keep early turn signal mechanisms properly aligned. An advertisement for "Classic Auto Radio Specialist" in Waxahatchie, Texas said your original radio could be cleaned and tuned up, or it could be equipped with an FM tuner while retaining original appearance. Your editor was not successful in contacting the company. Sylvan previewed our Red River Rendezvous II Tri-State Event. We reprinted two articles from previous newsletters: Ike Meissner's "I Can Fix Anything (Almost)" and "An Open Letter to Anton H." by Bill Reider. Debbie Pleau listed the convention committees and their chairs; nearly 30! Ten general-purpose workshop tech tips were reprinted from the Central Virginia Corvair Club. All 65 CNM members were listed. Twenty-one Years Ago - January 1988 - Vol. 14 - Number 1 - Issue 148 The cover was a picture of a Rampside: last month's puzzle drawing correctly put together. New members were Hal Schaefer and Will Davis. Francis reported on the Fan Belt Toss at Palm Springs. He was awarded the Hard Luck trophy for having a bad rod in a 600-mile rebuilt engine. The Phoenix club planned a mini-convention in April. Our March meeting was to feature Samuel Clemens AKA Mark Twain. Sylvan brought in a couple of flywheels. He "told" us if we "tolled" them with a hammer we could tell if they were good. Sure enough, one emitted a bell-like peal and the other a dull thunk. A terrific story by Tom Martin, DARK INTRIGUE, told of the adventure that led to his getting to drive the very first Corvair delivered to Galles-Groesbeck Chevrolet on September 24, 1959. An article by Bill and Sylvan told us what we'd need to know if we planned to do a clutch job. Our 1987 list of 63 members completed this issue. Twenty-eight Years Ago - January 1981 - Vol. 7 - Number 1 - Issue 64 The cover had our first view of a friendly CNM dragon who came back to inhabit our cover for several months. This time he was happily riding in a convertible, keeping his passengers warm with his fiery breath, no doubt. Robin DeVore gave an excellent demonstration on Powerglide transmissions. Jim penned an article, loosely founded on newsletter reports, that would have done better in the April Fool issue. Tech tips told us there were two kinds of fuel pumps, warned about a bad batch of lifters on the market, told about bucket seats for FCs, and suggested that we NOT use Armorall on our glass or tires. To commemorate the occasion, the recipient shall be awarded a plaque suitable for prominent display. The award shall read: YEAR Corvairs of New Mexico IKE MEISSNER AWARD AWARD RECIPIENT NAME The selection committee for the awards shall be comprised of three CNM members appointed by the CNM President, within two months of the last presentation, who will work with and report to the CNM Vice-President. It is recommended that at least two of the three members be immediate past award recipients. It is preferable for the last three immediate recipients to serve on the selection committee. The CNM Vice-President shall achieve approval of the award by concurrence with a quorum of the officers of CNM. (i.e., Three of the four CNM officers must concur to approve the award.) Guidelines for consideration for the Ike Meissner Award, in order of priority, shall be: 1. Attend meetings and plan, coordinate or organize CNM activities or events 2. Share Corvair knowledge, contribute technical information and tips to the CNM newsletter or other CORSA publications. 3. Encourage owners to preserve, maintain and share in the lore of the Corvair. 4. Serve in CNM as a committee person, chair, director and/or officer. 5. Attend an official CORSA event and/or serve with CORSA in an officially recognized capacity. 6. Recruit at least one new member. The presentation of the Ike Meissner Award shall be made at the annual CNM Anniversary Banquet or at a time and place designated by the CNM President. The presentation shall be made by the CNM Vice President or an alternate designated by the CNM President. The content of the oral award presentation shall be scripted in advance and have achieved concurrence of the Ike Meissner Award Committee and the CNM Vice President or an alternate designated by the CNM President.
