DECEMBER MEETING NOTES
Chuck Vertrees

The meeting was called to order at 19:00 on 12/3/08 at Highland Senior Center.
There were 22 members present including all officers. The minutes of the last
meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter.

President Mike Stickler announced that, due to the busy holiday season, there
would not be a board meeting during December.

Treasurer Robert Gold reported that CNM had $677.34 in the checking account and
$2,781.17 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,458.51. He also made
available a work sheet for the month showing income and expenditures. This will
continue to be available for those interested. He has also gotten the signatures
fixed on the GMAC account.

Robert also received a letter from Clark's Corvair Parts asking for another
fifty "Care and Feeding" Books. The same price as the last order was OK. We will
send ten copies immediately and get an update printed shortly and then send the
other forty copies. If any changes are needed, contact Bill Reider immediately.

The Bingo Party at House of Covers was a success thanks to Ray Trujillo. Those
who attended reported an enjoyable time. The club made a net profit of $270.00.

Sylvan Zuercher reported that we have two new members in the club, Charles Mann
who was at the last meeting, and James O'Connell who lives in Deming. James has
a 1962 Monza with a 110 engine and also has an 8/10 Cord replica which has a 140
HP Corvair engine. We had as a guest tonight, Russ McDuffie's father, Phil
McDuffie.

There was no Car Council report because there will not be another Car Council
meeting until January.

Heula Pittman had some nice 2009 calendars that were sent in by Brenda Stickler.
They are available for $1.00 each. The money goes to the Tri-State fund. Several
were sold.

Rita Gongora attended the meeting to discuss the club's annual Christmas Dinner.
She got the last of the meal preferences for the dinner at Perennials
Restaurant. Robert asked that we round up the price to the nearest 25 cents, so
prices will be $22.50 for adults and $11.25 for children. Please bring some
change when you come.

Possible future events were discussed. Let the Board know if you have ideas for
club activities.

Art Gold volunteered to run the 50/50 at future meetings.

Pat Hall will arrange a garage tour for February.

We need someone to volunteer setting up the Anniversary Dinner in March. In
recent years we have usually had 40 to 50 people in attendance. Heula said she
would help whoever volunteers.

Dave Huntoon said that he found a copy of a film called "The Methodical Man" in
the library van. This is a promotional piece made for GM by the Jam Handy
company in Detroit. It is on 16 mm film. LeRoy said that a VHS copy had been
made of the film years ago. It was suggested that we borrow a working projector
so we could show the film at a meeting, since it has been a long time since we
have run it. Also, it was suggested that we find out about making a DVD of it
for sale to other clubs. Cary Hubbard knows someone who does this kind of work.
He will ask them to find out about copyright and everything else we'd need to
know about transferring to DVD.

Our last meeting for 2008 was adjourned at 19:45. After meetings many of us go
to the 66 Diner near the University on Central NE to continue our Corvair
Conversations.

STICK TO VAIRS
Mike Stickler

I hope everyone enjoyed our Club's Christmas Dinner. We send many thanks to Rita
and Steve for organizing it. Once, again, it seems that the speaker (me) can't
be heard in a restaurant setting. I'm pretty soft spoken, so I guess someone
should ask Brenda to get me a bullhorn for Christmas.

Well, as the snow falls it's time to start planning next year's activities. We
will start with our annual garage tour, now being planned. Also, our 35th
Anniversary dinner is now in the planning stage. Of course the Taos Tri-State in
late May will be a tremendous event.

The rest of the year will be filled with other traditional events. I hope that
you members can think of some new and interesting events to spice things up.

Thanks for all the support you have given me during my first year as the CNM
president. I am looking forward to a great Year 2009 with you.

Happy Corvairing!!!!! -- Mike

TRI-STATE TREK TO THE FINISH
Brenda Stickler

Let's start out my New year's Article with everything you should know about
Tri-State '09.

* Where: Taos, NM - Kachina Best Western
* When: May 29th, 30th, & 31st, 2009
* Reservation PH# : (575) 758-2275
* Discount ID: CNM's Tri-State
* Hotel Room Cost: $69.00 a night. (Beautiful hotel!!!)

    Hotel Web Site: http://www.kachinalodge.com
                or: http://www.bestwesternnewmexico.com/taos-hotels/
Taos Tour Web Site: http://www.taosvacationguide.com

For those attending the January board meeting, I will have the three choices for
our banquet menu and a couple of venue ideas. I will let the board help guide me
on this. All of the venues sound great.

We are not increasing any room counts at this time. (Out of the 65 we have
reserved, we have 17 already booked in 2008.) Please, do not wait until May to
reserve your spot. This is a real deal on a plush hotel. The "cheap" hotels
start at $74.00 in Taos and do not offer our accommodations. (Pool, hot tub,
lunch counter and a nice continental breakfast.)

Well, I am proud of all the efforts of my hard working Taos Tri-State Team. CNM
members, this is going to be a wonderful Tri-State that you should not miss.

Many thanks - Brenda

CHRISTMAS DINNER 2008 AT PERENNIALS RESTAURANT
Rita Gongora

We thank Perennials Restaurant for opening their place and providing their
hospitality to our Corvair members. We had plenty of tables and lots of room to
be comfortable and visit friends we see too rarely! This year brought 44 adults
and 4 children to enjoy the culinary talents of the restaurant.

We also express our gratitude and appreciation for Lee Reider, Emma Rogers, and
the Sunshine Committee and all others involved in making the toys for the kids
happen. Mike Stickler did a fantastic job of acknowledging all those who
continue to keep our Corvair club alive and running year after year. Here and
there in the newsletter you may see photos from the dinner - thanks,
photographers!

Thank you again for your participation. -- Rita Gongora

SATURDAY, MARCH 7th: 35th ANNIVERSARY DINNER
Kim Patten

Our 35th Anniversary Dinner plans are finalized! We will meet at the Indian
Pueblo Cultural Center (2401 12th St NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104) at 2:00 PM on
Saturday March 7th for lunch. There will be four menu items to choose from,
including a vegetarian selection. The price will be $17.00 per plate. We will be
able to bring in a birthday cake if we wish. We'll be in our own dining room and
will have a PA microphone for our convenience. The price of the lunch includes a
non-alcoholic beverage and there's a pay-as-you-go bar available. Brenda asked
me to mention that we will be collecting items for door prizes. Bring your door
prize items to a meeting, or bring them to the lunch on Saturday.

We can anticipate an interesting and enjoyable time at the Indian Pueblo
Cultural Center. Learn more at their web site:
http://www.indianpueblo.org/index.html

I am told that the chef at the Center is the executive chef at the Albuquerque
Hotel. Make your plans now to join us for the club's birthday!

SUCCESSFUL TOY COLLECTION
Lee Reider & Emma Rogers

On December 6th our members brought many donated toys to our Christmas dinner.
Some members chose to donate money to be used to purchase whatever items were
needed to make the collection complete. At least one member who was not able to
attend the party gave money for a toy. We'd guess the value of the donated toys
to be approximately $300 to $400.

We took the toy donations to the UNM Children's Hospital playroom where they
will be provided to both the Carrie Tingley Hospital children as well as the UNM
Hospital children.

We appreciate the generosity of everyone for this worthy cause. We can always
count on our members when we call on them.

Thanks Everyone!

"CAN YOU IDENTIFY THIS MEMBER?"
Heula Pittman

This is the name of a new feature for our "Enchanted Corvairs" newsletter
starting this month. If you would like to be a part of this fun, give me a photo
of yourself when you were much younger. Sometime in the future, I will feature
the picture with the caption, "Can You Identify This Member?" in one of our
newsletters. I will use one per month as long as I have them.

I would like photos of both members and their spouses if possible. You may scan
your photos and e-mail them to me at: jimp @ unm.edu or give hard copies to me
discretely at a meeting so that no one else knows or sees them. I will return
the hard copies to you. Start looking through your old photo albums, searching
for just the right one to share with us and get it to me as soon as possible.

Now for the first picture for you to identify. This is a photo made long before
the idea of owning a Corvair or being a member of a Corvair Club ever entered
this member's head. Who is it? Tell me your best guess. -- Thanks, Heula

THE IKE MEISSNER AWARD
Jim Pittman

Really old-timers remember Ike Meissner as an engineer from Los Alamos who owned
many Corvairs, worked on many more, drove to Albuquerque to CNM meetings nearly
every month, wrote excellent newsletter articles and provided parts, knowledge
and mechanical help to all who asked. Ike died in 1980 and in 1986 some of us
discussed a club award to honor Ike's memory and to celebrate service to the
club by contemporary members. The first annual Ike Meissner Award was presented
in December 1987.

Over the years we continued the award but not every year with the same level of
attention. From time to time a complaint would surface: new members were not
hearing anything about Ike Meissner, new members were not told the reason for
the award, new members never knew Ike or why he was important.

In 1997 a committee was set up to address these problems. The rules for
nominating and selecting a recipient were formalized and responsibilities
were spelled out. The annual awards continued.

Recently the same old refrain has been heard: "There's almost no one left in
the club who knew Ike Meissner." Sylvan called for a committee to re-define the
award, or maybe to abolish it, or maybe to declare a moratorium. Maybe in
January we'll decide. In the meantime, we could consider Ike Meissner a "myth"
of the club's ancient past and celebrate those who best exemplify the spirit of
the club in the present. Please be thoughtful and fill out the nomination form
to help select a worthy recipient for 2009.

A CENTER MOUNTED 4-BBL CARBURETOR ON THE 140 HP ENGINE
By Bob Helt

The four separate Rochester carburetors used on the stock 140 horsepower engine
have definite limitations. For example, the linkage is complex: it is difficult
to set up and maintain correctly. In addition, there are four carburetors that
must be cleaned and rebuilt when the time comes for that maintenance.
Also the setup allows for no intake tuning to maximize mixture flow within a
desired rpm range.

So it is natural that Corvair owners would want to eliminate these deficiencies
and improve performance. Thus, at least two different vendors have offered
conversion kits that replaced the four stock carburetors with a small-cfm
4-barrel carburetor center-mounted on four runners over the top of the engine.
Carburetors most commonly used with this setup are the Holley 390 cfm (#8007 of
the 41504160 series) or the 450 cfm Carter Aluminum AFB used on the Valiant 270
CI engines and other cars. The Holley is now the most available and most used
carburetor so we will address our comments toward this carburetor mostly.

The Holley 8007 carburetor comes with vacuum operated secondaries and an
electric choke so this is the most desirable carburetor. Also available is the
less desirable #6299 that doesn't have the electric choke.

There are several distinct advantages using this center mounted 4-barrel setup
with either type of carburetor. First, it eliminates the linkage wear and
adjustment problems of the stock setup, and of course there is only one
carburetor to rebuild.

But maybe just as important is the 6 lb-ft max mid-range torque (and horsepower)
improvement due to the intake runner tuning. See the accompanying graph of
torque and horsepower comparing the stock setup on a stock, manual transmission,
140 hp engine to that of the center mounted 4-bbl setup on the same engine. This
data was taken from actual dynamometer tests witnessed by your author.

But like most things there are also some downsides to using this setup too. The
worst and maybe most annoying is the need to recalibrate the 4-bbl carburetor to
match the Corvair engine. No. Sorry, this is just not a simple bolt on setup,
although Clark's claim that their carburetors are ready to go. You may have to
tinker with the carburetor to get it right. The main problems will probably be
with the accelerator pump and power valve, getting them right for your engine.
In addition some re-jetting may be necessary. Hesitation may also be a problem
at low speeds. Actual changes and modifications are beyond the scope of this
article so it is recommended you get a copy of HP'S Holley Carburetor Book or
seek some expert advice before making any changes.

( See: http://autoxer.skiblack.com/carbs.html#holley )

In warm climates, you may not need the choke to be operational but in colder
climates the electric choke will be necessary.

Once you have the carburetor working pretty well, you will be faced with the
possibility of carburetor icing at low temperatures and moist conditions. This
can be a problem after cold startup but once the engine is warmed the problem
should not be of concern.

In addition, due to its design, the Holley has many (about 20) places where fuel
can leak and be a fire hazard. So when you must rebuild your carburetor, use
only reusable gaskets. These reusable gaskets will allow you to partially
disassemble the carburetor when necessary and then reassemble without replacing
the gaskets each time.

Lastly, you will note from the graph that while the 2000-4500 rpm mid-range
shows a much improved torque, at higher speeds the torque is worse than stock.
This is because of the resonant tuning that occurs in the runners. Thus
mid-range performance is greatly enhanced while high speed suffers. This setup
then is great for the street but undesirable for racing.

The above graph shows the results of dynamometer testing of a stock 140
horsepower Corvair engine both with the stock carburetor setup and the center
mounted Holley 4-barrel setup. Note the improved mid-range torque obtained with
the center-mount setup as a trade off to a loss in torque at speeds exceeding
4600 rpm. Note the close agreement of 109 peak horsepower with the separately
reported official Chevrolet engine test results of 109.4 peak horsepower.

Subject: motor oil for flat tappets

"Get your zinc"

"As Marlan has mentioned several times in Pit Stop, the latest API
specifications reduced zinc-phosphorus levels in motor oil, creating several
concerns over wear protection for flat-tappet-cam engines. Zinc-phosphorus is
critical to preventing wear on metal engine parts, as it reacts on the surface
of the metal and forms a sacrificial layer that helps prevent metal to metal
contact. Valvoline's answer to this issue is SynPower Full Synthetic motor oil
that is, according to the company, the only synthetic formulated with longer
lasting antiwear chemistry, and it retains the beneficial zinc-phosphorus
longer. Price $6.99 per quart."

(I bought Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic motor oil in five quart
jugs for $19.00 per jug, almost $4.00 per quart at Walmart. -- Dan)

I DON'T SMOKE...
Eric Schakel

On a recent Pig trip, my cell phone began the pathetic beeping indicating a
battery nearing death. Being a resourceful Corvair owner, I had the car charger
with me!

I pulled the "Cigarette Lighter" from the socket, plugged in the charger, and
was fascinated to NOT see the light come on. No amount of wiggling would make a
connection. I shut the phone off.

Cars of yesterday were all equipped with resistance coils intended to ignite
your tobacco products. Remove your Corvair's lighter socket, and you'll find it
a heavy-sleeved metal object, with stout terminals.

Remember, it's a high amp socket - no wonder it has the largest gauge wire under
the dash! For heat dispersion as well as electrical separation, the inner ground
sleeve is far from the plus-charged base plate.

The shallow depth of the ground sleeve is also why many auto charger plugs won't
work. New autos have ground sleeves that extend nearly the full depth of the
socket.

If you value 12 volt accessories more than the ability to light your fires,
consider this inexpensive remedy: Radio Shack sells a 12v, 10 amp Accessory
Outlet (270-1556) for around $8. Remove your chrome-sleeved existing socket, and
splice the wires to the new ones provided. You'll have to enlarge the dash hole
slightly for the new socket, but the black plastic replacement snaps in and
works just fine with all of my car plugs.

Just don't try to use your lighter with it!

SEVEN YEARS AGO
Jim Pittman

Seven Years Ago - January 2002 - Volume 28 - Number 1 - Issue 316

Our cover featured a flag-festooned Ultra Van and a smiling mechanic named Steve
replacing a harmonic balancer. For December we met at Galles, Robert Gold
presiding. We had $5522 in total financial resources. Reports on the pot luck
and auction and the Christmas party were uniformly positive. Jerry Goffe planned
a tour of Bosque del Apache for us. John Wiker suggested a tech session at Del
Norte High School. Mark Domzalski gave us the latest news on the CORSA
Convention in Flagstaff. Larry Blair gave a talk on efforts by the city to
protect and guarantee our water supply. This year's Tri-State was planned for
Grand Junction, Colorado, hosted by Rocky Mountain. Anne Mae Gold reported on
activities of the CNM Ladies Group. LeRoy Rogers previewed the February Garage
Tour to Dave's Auto Repair and to the fascinating Doll Museum. At our Christmas
dinner Rita Gongora presented the 2001 Meissner Award to Oliver Scheflow.

For those who want a table of all the gear ratios for all Corvair transmissions,
look on page 9 of this issue. But wait, the Powerglide ratios were not included.
And for those who have never had a harmonic balancer slowly come apart and chew
up the oil filter, Jim had his story to tell. A lot of photos were scattered
through this issue, and it finished up with a list of all 55 CNM members.

Fourteen Years Ago - January 1995 - Volume 21 - Number 1 - Issue 232

Our cover featured a nice drawing of a Rampside. President Larry ran our
meeting. We had $1520 to spend, $125 of which was reserved for convention
expenses. We made $275 at last month's pot-luck and auction. A Wurlitzer organ
and some snow tires were offered in the FOR SALE section.

Larry's "Noxious Fumes" column reported on a great Christmas dinner at the
Sirloin Stockade. He reported on seeing a video tour of the Holy Land by Bill
and Lee Reider and hearing Chuck and Del sing with the Enchanted Mesa Chorus.
Larry also authored a tech tip on how to keep early turn signal mechanisms
properly aligned.

An advertisement for "Classic Auto Radio Specialist" in Waxahatchie, Texas said
your original radio could be cleaned and tuned up, or it could be equipped with
an FM tuner while retaining original appearance. Your editor was not successful
in contacting the company.

Sylvan previewed our Red River Rendezvous II Tri-State Event. We reprinted two
articles from previous newsletters: Ike Meissner's "I Can Fix Anything (Almost)"
and "An Open Letter to Anton H." by Bill Reider.

Debbie Pleau listed the convention committees and their chairs; nearly 30! Ten
general-purpose workshop tech tips were reprinted from the Central Virginia
Corvair Club. All 65 CNM members were listed.

Twenty-one Years Ago - January 1988 - Vol. 14 - Number 1 - Issue 148

The cover was a picture of a Rampside: last month's puzzle drawing correctly put
together. New members were Hal Schaefer and Will Davis. Francis reported on the
Fan Belt Toss at Palm Springs. He was awarded the Hard Luck trophy for having a
bad rod in a 600-mile rebuilt engine. The Phoenix club planned a mini-convention
in April. Our March meeting was to feature Samuel Clemens AKA Mark Twain. Sylvan
brought in a couple of flywheels. He "told" us if we "tolled" them with a hammer
we could tell if they were good. Sure enough, one emitted a bell-like peal and
the other a dull thunk.

A terrific story by Tom Martin, DARK INTRIGUE, told of the adventure that led
to his getting to drive the very first Corvair delivered to Galles-Groesbeck
Chevrolet on September 24, 1959. An article by Bill and Sylvan told us what
we'd need to know if we planned to do a clutch job. Our 1987 list of 63 members
completed this issue.

Twenty-eight Years Ago - January 1981 - Vol. 7 - Number 1 - Issue 64

The cover had our first view of a friendly CNM dragon who came back to inhabit
our cover for several months. This time he was happily riding in a convertible,
keeping his passengers warm with his fiery breath, no doubt. Robin DeVore gave
an excellent demonstration on Powerglide transmissions. Jim penned an article,
loosely founded on newsletter reports, that would have done better in the April
Fool issue. Tech tips told us there were two kinds of fuel pumps, warned about
a bad batch of lifters on the market, told about bucket seats for FCs, and
suggested that we NOT use Armorall on our glass or tires. We published no member
list this month.
