APRIL MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting was called to order at 19:05 at Highland Senior Center on April 1st. There were 31 plus members present and all officer were there. The plus was Sally Williams' future Corvair driver. She's not walking yet, but she can really crawl. A collection box was circulated to take up contributions to buy Tri-State shirts for Sylvan Zuercher and the young lady at the Kachina Inn in Taos who has been so much help to us. Pat Hall reminded everyone that any nominations for the Boydston Award had to been turned in by the end of the meeting. Robert Gold reported that CNM had $1,363.01 in the checking account and $1,825 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,188.17. Members were reminded that if you want him to take care of your dues, get the envelope from him so he knows what the money is for. Guest Mark Jones was introduced. He has a Corvair and joined at the end of the meeting as a new member. I will try to get more information about him later. Cary Hubbard said that the Car Council meeting was about the shortest that he had gone to. The two-license-plate bill died in the legislature for now. How many members contacted their legislator? It does help! The May 17th Museum Car Show budget was discussed. The August annual picnic is probably being hosted by the Lincoln club, but the date was not given. The Spring Thaw will be April 24th. It's a great opportunity for getting your Corvair oiled and greased. Call Cary for the location. It is on San Francisco but I do not remember the address. Jim Pittman said that this is a long month so the deadline for newsletter items will be the second weekend after the board meeting. However, anything for the newsletter, the sooner the better. An e-mail was received from Will Davis, a past active member of CNM. He was treasurer for a long time and was kidded all the time about whether he was using treasury money to keep his BMW running. He has a Porsche now. Also, he has had a leg amputated and is in the process of getting a prosthesis. I am not sure, but I think he had diabetes. Sylvan Zuercher is now at home and Jim said that he is looking good. He is using a wheel chair. He's not sure when he will be attending meetings again. Heula Pittman reminded everyone that our active members, Mary Lou and Mark Martinek will be in town from Vancouver, Washington. After they left New Mexico they have maintained their CNM membership. They would like to meet everyone at Papa Felipe's for dinner while they get their southwestern Mexican Food fix. The time is Saturday April 18th at 18:00. Heula also told us that the Sunshine Committee is about ready to start filling the goodie bags for Tri-State. Brenda Stickler reported that all of the original 63 rooms reserved at the Taos Kachina Inn for the Tri-State have been taken. There have been another 37 rooms set aside but that is it. Of the new rooms set aside, 31 are non-smoking and 5 are smoking. A signup sheet was circulated to see how many Tri-State shirts the membership would want and the sizes. T-shirts are $15.00 and Golf shirts are $20.00 while XXL sizes are $2.00 extra. Brenda is expecting a similar list from the Colorado Springs and Denver chapters. Shirts will be paid for at registration in Taos but we need as many as possible to be pre-ordered so we'll know how many to get. Rita Gongora has been looking for a place to have our Christmas dinner. Perennials Restaurant was OK but we can probably do better. She has been checking with a place in Scottsdale Village called "La Tico" (spelling?) and they could possibly handle it. It is located at Eubank and Candelaria so you can check it out. It can handle 80 people. More on this later. Ollie Scheflow said he is only one short on volunteers for the April Old Route 66 cleanup. Hopefully some more will turn up. All are invited to join us after the cleanup at the Golden Corrall on Central. Dave Huntoon has owned the library van for some time and has been organizing and storing the material from the CNM library. There are several items that have been checked out by various members. If those who have them are through with them, please return them. Next, the 50/50 raffle was conducted by Art Gold and was won by Geoffrey Johnson. The meeting was adjourned at 19:35. Ollie Scheflow passed out some sheets on some technical topics: fuel pumps and turn signal cancelers. We discussed problems with these items and how to fix them.

APRIL BOARD MEETING NOTES Chuck Vertrees The meeting came to order at 17:05 on April 15th at Ray Trujillo's shop. Present were Robert Gold, Jim & Heula Pittman, Pat & Vickie Hall, Mike & Brenda Stickler, Ray Trujillo, Cary Hubbard, Rita Gongora and Chuck & Julia Vertrees. Mike said that we had received an order from Clark's Corvair Parts for 50 more Care and Feeding books. We will send a few, but we are awaiting a printing of the latest revision that Bill Reider is working on. It was suggested that we also have them for sale at the Albuquerque Museum Car Show and at the Tri-State meeting. Pat was given monies to purchase the Tri-State trophies. Robert passed out the latest treasury report showing $1,413.35 in the checking account and $1,825.16 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,238.51. He said that we must keep at least $1,000 in the GMAC account to keep it active. Cary said that the Car Council meeting was very short. Most of the meeting was about the upcoming Albuquerque Museum Car Show. We need to volunteer to count ballots. It is a great chance to sit down in an air conditioned room in comfortable chairs. Note: there is now a good Car Council web page with the complete minutes of the Car Council meetings. Heula said that Wendell Walker had reported to her committee about the possibility of buying a P. A. system for CNM. He has found one that he feels would meet all our requirements for $270.00. This was tentatively approved by the board but we will ask Jerry Goffe to work with Wendell on this. The Kachina Inn will have a P. A. System for our use at the Tri-State so it is not really a pressing matter. Jim said this is a long month so anything for the newsletter should be turned in by Friday the 24th. Brenda said that we had most of the items needed for the Tri-State. We could still use note pads and pens or pencils, and plates and napkins. There will be a get-together on the 25th to start putting the registration bags together. We discussed whether the patches would be included in the bags, or whether we should sell them -- they will cost the club $3.75 each. It was finally decided that one would be added to each registration bag and if anyone wanted a second they would be charged $5.00 for it. Members volunteered to subsidize the cost of the patches. Dan Palmer will be going to Taos on the 1st of May to approach local vendors about support for the Tri-State. It would be nice if some club members could accompany Dan. There will be some gift coupons coming from Clarks Corvair Parts. There have been some lists received from the two Colorado clubs about numbers and sizes of shirts they want to order. It was decided that we would order 60 shirts now and we could get a second run if needed. Members PLEASE NOTE: Ollie must have help at the registration table. You well might be asked to volunteer if enough people do not offer to help. At registration all will be asked whether they will be at the banquet and will be asked to register for the tours if they want to go. There will be a special tour offered to the Earth Homes on Saturday after lunch. There are usually no tours on the weekend, but they are making an exception for the Tri-State. The pueblo tours will also be on Saturday after lunch. Please bring cash for the tours and dinners. Charging by credit card will be very difficult. Jim and Brenda have put together an up-to-date web page on the internet about the Taos Tri-State. CNM shirts may be available at the May meeting. If so, members may pick theirs up then in order to relieve the rush at Taos. We adjourned at 18:18.
CARY'S 1961 LAKEWOOD Heula Pittman After the meeting we all went out to admire Cary's "new" red 1961 Lakewood. We learned that Steve Gongora owned this car for some 25 years but finally sold it because he had too many Corvairs. A lady bought it for her grandson's birthday. The grandson didn't like the car and for several years neglected it. Recently Steve heard that the car was for sale. Cary had admired this car at a distance for years and instantly pounced on it. He loves it! It's red and has a 4-speed and drives very well. Cary can easily fix minor problems with its brakes. We were all happy to hear the story of the car and had no difficulty sharing his enthusiasm for getting this rare Corvair! We all envied him for his purchase.
STICK TO VAIRS Michael Stickler Summer is approaching and that means a vacation road trip is imminent. The ultimate vacation machine is of course a motor home. Just load it up with the needed supplies and hit the open road in opulent comfort. As a teenager, we were the first on our block to have a motor home ... of sorts. Dad went to the City of Albuquerque auction and purchased an old police "Paddy Wagon". It was a 1954 GMC utility van similar to a Milk Truck of that era. The faded gray color with the POLICE insignia hastily painted over made it a hit with the neighbors. Its dowdy appearance fit in well with the other hot rod and project cars that graced our residence from time to time. Work began immediately, removing the cold steel seats and bars that confined the hapless prisoners. We replaced them with comfortable seats and sleeping bunks. The first trip to the mountains was fun, but revealed a miscalculation in the choice of vehicle. The 4.56:1 differential gearing was best suited for trips around town with a heavy load. At highway speeds, though, it resulted in that poor old 6 cylinder engine winding up to the max. As I recall, it took a long time to locate a rear end with taller gears to improve the top speed. In the mean time it served as the favorite drive-in movie machine. (A dollar a car load!) and often was seen at Friday night cruising around "Franks" a popular Vips Drive in. Growing up with grand ideas but modest means was a difficulty overcome only by the tactics of innovations and hard work. Such talents have proven useful for keeping my Corvairs running today.
TAOS TRI-STATE TITILLATING TIMETABLE Brenda Stickler Here is what our schedule of events look like for Tri-State 2009. Thursday there will be a few members showing up from CNM to help get things set up for the Friday arrival of clubs. If you come in early, you could leave a message for Brenda Stickler at the front desk so we could decide where to have dinner together in town. We will have the registration set up in the lobby by noon on Friday, May 29th. It will stay open until 7:00 PM when we will all gather at the patio of the hotel pool and enjoy Native American Dancing until 8:30 PM. Saturday morning's Continental Breakfast will start at 6:30 and registration will be set up there to catch those who arrived late on Friday night. The car parade through town will start at 9:00 AM at the hotel, and we will all end up back at the hotel where our Car Show will be set up and will last until noon. Lunch is the free time to shop and eat in this great "walking friendly" town. We have two discounted tours scheduled for the afternoon. They will take-off at 1:45 PM and at 2:00 PM from the hotel lobby area. The choices are to Earthship Homes or to Taos Pueblo, and be aware that there will be a lot of walking at the Pueblo. This Earthship Homes tour is set up especially for us, but you could visit Taos Pueblo on your own, on a different day. Our grand finale to wrap up this Tri-State Event will be the evening banquet at 6:00 PM back at the hotel. Sunday morning the Continental breakfast will start at 6:30 AM through 8:30 AM. You will have more time to walk this great town... check out time for the rooms at our hotel is 11:00 AM. Reservations are very healthy for this Tri-State. The information I have is that there are only 18 rooms left from the blocks we set up as I write this article on April 24th. Thanks so much for your support, input and enthusiasm. "Schedule a Tri-State in an awesome town .... and they will come!!!!" * *Theology from your Taos Tri-State Taskmaster - Brenda Additional Notes: 1- Start thinking what your family wants to bring to the Friday night registration session. In the past we have had cakes, brownies, veggie dips, and sodas. 2- If you run out of time to contribute in another way, we could use wrapped treats that do not melt for the sixty goody bags. (Gum, hard candy, small bags of lunch size chips).Let Heula know what you would like to provide for the goody bags Try K-Mart for good prices on such items.
MARY LOU & MARK MARTINEK VISIT Heula Pittman Mary Lou and Mark Martinek drove their Recreational Vehicle and towed Mary Lou's pretty little turquoise 1964 Corvair convertible all the way from Vancouver, Washington, arriving in Albuquerque on Thursday, April 16th. Saturday evening, twelve on us met them at Papa Felipe's Restaurant for a great New Mexican dinner, reminiscing and tall tales. The Martineks looked terrific and it was good to see them again. We believe that both Mary Lou and Mark miss Albuquerque and the Club. But they also like the fact that they are closer to their children now and they seem able to tolerate rain, dew, fog, drizzle, wet snow, mildew, mold, haze, damp, and so on. We don't know whether they miss heat, wind, tumbling tumbleweeds, blowing dust or thorny desert plants. Yes, they still like getting our newsletter and they even contribute to it from time to time. A highlight of the evening was having Sylvan and Opal Zuercher with us. Sylvan said this was the first time he had been out of the house for anything but doctors' visits in many months and "It really felt good!" to go out for a party. I believe the generous serving of Papa Felipe's bar-b-que ribs may have contributed to his feeling of well-being too. Both Sylvan and Opal looked good and we all enjoyed visiting with them. After the dinner and running out of tall tales to tell, we all said our goodbyes with the promise of a more detailed trip report from Mark, material for a future newsletter article.
WINDY OLD ROUTE 66 CLEAN-UP Ollie Scheflow B-r-r-r-r-r-r-r! April 4th was the first 2009 clean-up. When we changed from March to April we thought we would have a nice Spring day. It was anything but. At about 27 degrees F and with the strongest wind I can remember ever having worked with, we could hardly stand up! It was even difficult for me to open my truck door. It really helped to have two people working together, one to try to hold open the plastic bag and one to pick up and put in the trash. Doing all this by yourself was mission impossible. Bill Reider found an alternator (it looked to be in pretty good shape) that he gave to Pat Hall to rebuild or turn in for a core. I found a Sam's Club card that looked like new. But I couldn't find a phone number for the name on the card, and a call to Sam's Club was no help. I believe everyone else was as glad as I was to finish up and drive to the Golden Corral for a breakfast, brunch or lunch and to warm up a little. Our April participants were: Robert Gold, Pat Hall, Dave Huntoon, Dan Palmer, Jim Pittman, Bill Reider, Ollie Scheflow and Boreas the Great Wind of the North. Thanks to the brave and loyal participants and hope to see you at the June 6th clean-up when we probably won't find it too cold to work!

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THESE MEMBERS? Heula Pittman Here are the fourth and fifth entries in our series "Can You Identify This Member?" for you to guess. (Last month the "April" entry was missing -- maybe a sort of April Fool in reverse. Or maybe I just forgot.) As was the case in January, February and March, these photos were made long before the persons featured ever gave a second's thought to Corvairs. The rules for this series are: * The newsletter will feature a different photo from an earlier life of one of our members each month -- as long as the supply of photos lasts. * Try to guess the name of the person in each photograph, keep your own list of guesses and give me your list at the end of the series. * I will announce the person with the most correct guesses at the end of the contest and present a prize to the winner! If everyone will give me a photograph from an "earlier life" then this contest could go on for quite a while! For example, if I were to get thirteen photos in all, we could end the contest and award the prize at our 36th anniversary celebration in 2010. If I get more than thirteen photos then we could have a second cycle of prizes. So, give me your photos and keep your list up to date. You can e-mail digital photos at ( jimp @ unm.edu ) or you can give me your photographs, I will scan them and I will return them to you. Remember, this is a contest, so no fair sharing guesses with others! -- Thanks, Heula

TECHNICAL TIPS FROM EARLIER NEWSLETTERS -- JANUARY 1981 FUEL PUMP DIFFERENCES Dayton Corvair Club -- June 1978 Did you know that in mid-1961 the fuel pump design was changed? Using the wrong fuel pump can cause several problems. In one failure mode the fuel pump can leak gasoline down the pushrod and into the oil. This thins the oil, causing untold problems to moving parts. What are the proper fuel pump parts? Here are measurements: 60 - 61 61 - 69 First Design Second Design Extension of Fuel Pump Rod out of 7/16" 3/16" Pump Sleeve Push Rod OveralI Length 3-5/8" 3-7/8" Push Rod Spring Pushes Against Engine Housing Fuel Pump The first design fuel pumps are not available from GM, but some parts houses have them. The number on the top of the 1st design pump is 5594704 and is referred to as the type 4704, part number 5621704. Note that the pumps available from GM (2nd design) are marked with the 5656774 even though the part number Is actually 6415433 and the AC box will show a prominent 4886.
Bucket Seats for Forward Control Eldon Strong, Denver Use seats from a Plymouth Horizon. You'll need to make a slight dent in the wheel well, or you can set the seats inboard slightly.
TRW VALVE LIFTERS Jim Craig, San Diego, September 1980 A note of caution to anyone buying TRW replacement lifters for Corvair engines. Several SDCC members have installed TRW lifters Part Nr. VL-37 and have had to disassemble the engines within 75 to 200 miles due to squealing and knocking noises. The engines were found to have dry, galled rocker arms and balls, the push rods wou'ld not rotate, and the valve stems were worn off at an angle, with valve guides and valves galled and worn excessively on one side. TRW has been made aware of the problem, but no answer has been received as to what corrective action they have taken. TRW has in the past sold correct lifters for Corvairs, so the problem may be the wrong lifter being packaged and identified incorrectly. The difference in the original GM lifter and the incorrect TRW lifter is very obvious when compared side-by-side. The problem lifter has the push rod seat positioned too high in the lifter, which puts the rocker arm at too high a position at the heel area. This in turn puts a side load on the valve stem by the rocker arm tip. DISTANCE, END-TO-END DISTANCE, END TO PUSHROD SEAT ORIGINAL GM: 2" 1-15/32" GOOD TRW, Nr. WINDOW CLEANING WESTWIND Newsletter of CORSA West, July 1980 To really clean your car window to crystal clear perfection, try DuPont's Prep-Sol solvent Nr. 3919. This solvent is intended to clean paint in preparation for repainting and will get off slllcones, tar, wax, polish, grease, road film, etc. The windows In my '69 kept clouding up when it sat in the sun for any length of time. Windex and other cleaners didn't work, and lacquer thinner didn't work either. Follow the directions on the can and you won't believe the results.
ARMORALL ON GLASS AND TIRES... NO! Tom Silvey, VALVE CLATTER, August 1980 The July Issue of the Flat Six Newsletter (Prairie Capital Corvair Club) had an article by Bob Teague about the problem of getting ArmoralI on the inside of his windshield. He had a terrible time getting it off, finally using a chemical so potent he had to wear rubber gloves to use it. So don't get Armorall on glass surfaces! I would add that I think Armorall causes tire sidewall rubber to crack. I have a set of tires with many small cracks that the previous owner treated with Armorall.
LUG NUT TECH TIP FOR CAMARO ALUMINUM WHEELS ON LM CORVAIRS Garrie Fox Subject: Fw: [PPCC] Lug nut tech tip for Camaro aluminum wheels on LM Corvairs From: gfox80915 @ yahoo.com Date: 2009-Mar-24 Tue 20:58:32.00 MT Jim, Here is some tech info with a pic if you want to pass it along to LM Corvair owners! You have editorial license! I think Patricia and I will bring the 1965 Corsa Crown Conversion and her 1969 Milt Binion Fuel Injected 140 powerglide with AC to Taos. The V8 is too warm in the passenger compartment for her to ride a long distance. This '69 was Milt's personal Corvair. Thanks for your great sharing of info and newsletters! Regards, Garrie Fox PPCC,RMC, CORSA From: Garrie Fox gfox80915 @ yahoo.com Subject: [PPCC] Lug nut tech tip for Camaro aluminum wheels on LM Corvairs To: "PPCC List" ppcc-list @ corvair.org Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 11:08 AM Thanks to Chris Klapp, the 1969 Corvair has new 15" Camaro wheels. After noticing that Corvair lug nuts appeared to be other than exactly correct, I began a search for compatible/OEM lug nuts for the new wheels. There are a myriad of nuts that various dealers/parts suppliers claim will work, but each one I investigated might work, but did not fit the taper in the lug holes. Finally went to the Chevrolet Dealer here and they showed me the exact OEM type nut, but they did not have 20 in stock. Their part number crossed to Ballcamp 641-2043 or Dorman 611070.1. NAPA stocks large quantities of the 641-2043. The Corvair now has a new set of 195/60 R 15 tires on it with the new Camaro rims. From: "Richard Finch" finchbooks @ tularosa.net Subject: Attached Files, "Finch Corvair Engine Cart" Date: 2009-Apr-15 12:42:30 MDT To: "Kent Sullivan" kentsu @ corvairkid.com 2 Attachments, 153 KB Hi Kent, This has taken me a long time because I am not as young as I was back in 1962 when I first built this engine cart. The pictures were taken today, 4/15/2009 and the cart is my original design. It has been used for over 45 years now and has been useful in overhauling and cleaning up over 100 Corvair engines and transaxles. I built the cart one night so I could do a bolt job on my then 1960 Corvair 4 door stick shift flywheel. I did the cart building on a Friday night because I had to have the car running so I could go to work on Monday morning. The cart worked perfectly and I was even able to take the 1960 Corvair to church on Sunday morning. The engine in the picture on the cart today is a 110 hp engine for my 1961 Rampside pickup that is coupled to a 4:11 rear end gear ratio and a powerglide transmission. I pulled the engine out to replace a torque converter that had a stripped out starter ring gear. In my 50 years of Corvair ownership, I have built several of these engine carts and one mod is to make the cart longer to support the entire powertrain. There are times when the longer cart is too long and therefore I use my old original cart. It still works just great as you can see in the picture. The plans to build the cart are in all 9 issues of my book, "How to Keep Your Corvair Alive". The book is now distributed by Clark's Corvair Parts, Inc. Richard Finch ... SEVEN YEARS AGO Jim Pittman SEVEN YEARS AGO - May 2002 - Volume 28 - Number 5 - Issue 320 Our cover was Mary Lou's 1964 convertible, photo by Mark Martinek. President Robert Gold ran our meeting. A guest was Jim Matthews, a former CNM member. He was the original owner of a 1964 automatic sedan with 29,000 miles. Wendell said he was guarding a treasury sum of $5,243.19 but had not yet received a statement from GMAC. Mark Martinek reported on the Car Council and plans were ongoing for a car show in Los Lunas. An "Old Route 66 Car Show" was coming up in July. Mark Domzalski reported that the Flagstaff International CORSA Convention is right on schedule. The Corvair Ladies Group was organizing a progressive dinner. An ad in the For Sale section listed hundreds of items that Bill Reider was offering for sale as he got out of the repair business. Our 2003 Tri-State crew (Bill Reider, LeRoy Rogers, and Hurley Wilvert) went to Raton to finish preparations. All was well. We organized a caravan to the 2002 Tri-State in Grand Junction, Colorado. Technical demonstration: Bill Reider gave some tips on rebuilding carburetors. Some of these tips would come in handy at our Saturday April 27 Carburetor Tune-up Session at Del Norte High School. President Robert said since the weather was warming up he'd have to start using premium gasoline to keep his Corvairs from "dieseling" when turned off. Is this a tech tip? Is there a better way to prevent dieseling? Ollie Scheflow told us about a cruise to South America which included going around the Horn. That must have been quite the adventure. Jon and Debra Anderson and children were in Albuquerque. Several of us met at Sadie's Restaurant on Friday evening, March 29th for a nice visit with them and enjoyed talking about Corvair activities past, present and future. The Andersons claim to enjoy living in Colorado Springs but we believe their hearts are still in New Mexico. Your editor received a nice letter from former member Robin De Vore who happened across our web page and read all the newsletter back issues! The De Vores were about to retire to a farm in South Australia! The topic of "Dummy of the Month Club" was brought up-to-date by Del Patten and Chuck Sadek via Virtual Vairs. Finally, Mark Martinek gave us a fascinating article on preparations for a trip to a Corvair gathering in St. George, Utah. All Corvair fans are advised to re- read about this adventure. FOURTEEN YEARS AGO - May 1995 - Volume 21 - Number 5 - Issue 236 Our cover had a simple drawing of a Lakewood. Larry Blair ran the meeting. Joe Ashton and Ted Yachik were visitors; both joined CNM. Several upcoming Car Council-related events were mentioned. Dennis Pleau said we were trying to get copies of the budgets from recent conventions to guide our convention plans. We needed a "convention handbook" but had to write our own! CNM belt buckles, rebuilt harmonic balancers and new Clark's catalogs were being ordered. Our tech talk was about early turn signal repair; thanks, Larry! At the meeting we planned a tour of the Travertine Marble plant near Belen. A report on the tour described the snowy April weather and the amazing marble saws and other equipment we saw. We had lots of tech tips: use TWO steering wheel covers to make a nice, fat, easy-to-grip wheel; replace your old cracked shifter boot with a new one from J.C. Whitney; beware over-filling your Powerglide; add a bushing to make your late shifter work like an early one. And, Otto Mechanic visited a shrink to help him deal with his obsession with automobiles. The visit was a success, but not the way Mrs. Mechanic intended! TWENTY-ONE YEARS AGO - May 1988 - Vol 14 - Nr 5 - Issue 152 Our cover showed an Austin-Healey 3000, your editor's first sports car in 1964. He sold it in 1966 to buy a new turbocharged Corsa coupe! We had $684. The Tri-State in Colorado and the Museum Car Show were the same weekend this year. Bruce Phillips (Professional Paint Supply) gave us an excellent talk on painting your car. Bill Reider answered the question, "What is a tune-up?" and provided an extensive check list. A good reference. TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO - May 1981 - Volume 7 - Number 5 - Issue 68 The cover drawing represented a 1960 sedan. We worried about insurance costs and the state of our treasury and schemed ways to make money. We discussed participating in a slalom or Fun-Khana in Los Alamos in July. Jack Bryan put on our April econo-run. Richard Twilley and his 1963 coupe were far ahead of the pack with 38.37 MPG; Pittman's 1965 Corsa convertible 140 and Lawrence's 1966 Monza coupe 110 tied for second place at 32.41 MPG. The best automatic was Reider's 1965 coupe 110 at 30.32 MPG. Boy, those were the days. A tech tip: Dick Hartje (San Diego) told how an apparently good scissors jack let a car crash down with no warning! Dick said, never get under a jacked-up car until it is blocked with sturdy jack stands. THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO May 1974 (no newsletter yet) The new club met at Duncan Puett's shop in the south valley this month. Duncan showed us his Corvair-powered dirt track race cars. Do I remember correctly that they had home-grown fuel injection?
