All officers were present. There were 26 members in attendance. President Mike Stickler asked that we express thanks to Robert Gold for organizing the State Fair Car show. Robert in turn thanked all who brought their cars. There were 19 Corvairs on display. We had almost all years present and there were all body models on hand. Treasurer Robert Gold reported that CNM had $2,623.65 in the checking account and $1,149.45 in the GMAC account for a total worth of $3,782.10. Guest Hyman Eisenberg was introduced. His job is title research. If you have a car without a title, he can take care of it. He has done work for Dave Langlois, who has been satisfied with his work. If you need his services, I have his card and so does Mike Stickler. Swiftly and smoothly switching job titles, Robert Gold reported on the Car Council meeting. He said that there were few people present. Mostly the past swap meet was discussed. CNM was well represented at the meet. Pat Hall helped set things up and then several members were on hand on Saturday to help with admittance and parking. The Car Council will meet next month, then probably not meet again until after the first of next year. Jim Pittman, newsletter editor, thanked Robert Gold for getting his report of the State Fair car show in to him early (maybe while the show was still going on!?) so that he could get it into the newsletter. Jim said this is a short month and items for the newsletter must be in to him by the Friday after the Board meeting. Jim also reported on an article in Road & Track magazine by Peter Egan. The article was about Egan's thoughts on the "Cash for Clunkers" program. We discussed this at our last meeting. We pretty much agreed that it was sad, perhaps stupid, to ruin good engines as, some of us suspect, pretty much a publicity stunt. Jim also reported on reading articles agreeing with him about the Chevrolet Volt all electric car. Some think it may be very much a waste of money to buy one. Some think its utility may not be near what should be expected. Heula Pittman reported that a get well card was being circulated for Jerry Goffe. He is in Anna Kaseman Hospital. He is a diabetic and got a very serious foot infection. The doctor said that they found it in time so that he does not have to lose a foot or leg. He will still be hospitalized for some time. Also she said that the deadline for young pictures of members is the end of tonight's meeting. Score sheets with all the pictures will be available in the November newsletter and at the November meeting and the results will be announced at the Christmas dinner. There will be some more pictures in the newsletter that this is published in. October is the time for election of officers. Your current secretary (Chuck Vertrees) finally had someone who would run against him, so he (I) stepped down. Our new candidate was really interested in the job. Chairman of the nominating committee Sylvan Zuercher suggested that the slate of candidates be accepted by acclamation and the members so voted. Therefore officers for the coming year will be Pat Hall, President; Robert Trujillo, Vice-President; Robert Gold, Treasurer; and Art Gold, Secretary. Upcoming events include a possible money raiser at House of Covers in November. The board will have to come up with the details. In December we will have our Christmas dinner. It will be at Roper's on Saturday evening December 5th at 5:00 PM. Roper's is at 8810 Central SE. That's just east of Wyoming. We will have the whole place to ourselves. It will be a buffet and the price is very reasonable, $12.45 per head including gratuity. The board will decide on the menu items. Before we adjourned, Dan Palmer introduced his son Dan who is visiting. He currently is very active in the NASCAR team of Ernie Elliott. He started out as a specialty welder and branched out from there. He currently has an extensive machine shop in Dawsonville, Georgia. It was fantastic hearing him tell about some of the things that they do, such as starting out with an aluminum ingot and machining out an oil pan! I could have listened to him all night. I learned much that I had wondered about as far as NASCAR rules, etc. went. We thank Dan for bringing Dan to visit our meeting, and we thank Dan for his stories about his work with NASCAR. The meeting was adjourned at 20:00. We went to the "66 Diner" for refreshments and more talk. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to: Five CNM members celebrate birthdays this month: Anne Wiker November 6 Jim Pittman November 13 Sylvan Zuercher November 16 Opal Zuercher November 22 John Wiker November 23 HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to each of you! Brenda and Mike Stickler celebrate their wedding anniversary on November 21 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes to the happy couple! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DRIVE A CORVAIR Pat Hall Hello CNM members. I am proud that our club selected me as President. My promise to the club is to do the best I can to make the club better. I feel that with newly elected officers such as Ray Trujillo as Vice-president, Art Gold as Secretary, and Robert Gold continuing as Treasurer, we, as a team, will be able to help our club. I am honored to serve in our club with our long-time Newsletter editor, Jim Pittman. There are many projects to talk about for the year in front of us. I have asked LeRoy Rogers to arrange a garage tour, probably for February, and he will report back on his suggestions for where and when. I asked Jim and Heula Pittman whether they'd like to find a restaurant and arrange our Anniversary dinner in March. (At the board meeting I learned that Anne Mae Gold had already volunteered to organize the Anniversary dinner. Heula & Jim agreed to help her if she needs help.) Now we need suggestions for other events for the coming year, as well as volunteers to organize and run them. We made a start at talking about such events at the board meeting tonight. Hope to see all members on Nov. - 04 - 09. -- Pat Hall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OCTOBER BOARD MEETING NOTES Art Gold Mike Stickler called the meeting to order and there was a brief and very informal change-of-command ceremony in which Pat Hall took over the club briefcase and the seat at the head of the table. All officers were present. Others attending were Brenda Stickler, Vickie Hall, Heula & Jim Pittman, Julie & Chuck Vertrees, "Lube" Lubert, David Huntoon, Rita & Steve Gongora. President's Report - Pat Hall - Became new president at this meeting. Stated that he wants to make the club the best it can be, by organizing more events, getting suggestions from club members, getting guest speakers (during dinners?), tech demonstrations (during meetings?), defining the TUNA, and driving tours? (The purpose of the TUNA should be to gain hands-on experience for repairing Corvairs.) Appointed five individuals to the board (Jim, Chuck, Dave, Sylvan, and Heula) and Art Gold agreed to continue as Car Council rep. Vice-President's Report - Ray Trujillo talked about the fund-raiser event and costs of printing. Treasurer's Report - Robert Gold - $2,623.85 (Checking account), $1,151.20 (GMAC) for a total of $3,775.05. It was reported that our sponsor GALLES CHEVROLET has not given any money to the club recently. The plaque for the Tri-State will be ordered from All Sports Trophies and the cost reimbursed to whoever orders it. Secretary's Report - yours truly Art Gold as new secretary took notes as needed. Past Secretary Chuck mentioned that his mailing address and e-mail address were used for the club's business, and he volunteered to continue without changing, which those present heartily approved, particularly as regards the GMAC account and the state non-profit certificate forms. Brenda Stickler - Discussed the printing of the new Caring and Feeding of Your Corvair book. Cost to print is about $.... each in quantity, and the book will be sold for $..... There would be 100 printed now, with the possibility for more in the future. These books would be sold to Clark's Corvair Parts. Brenda brought up the possibility of printing calendars again and Ray discussed the costs for different formats. There was a debate over whether to go with either a book calendar or the one-page sheet calendar. The decision was made to go with the one-sheet calendar. The book calendar would cost $15.00 to print as opposed to $1.50 for the single sheet. The preparation for making the calendar, including selecting suitable photographs, would start next year, with the calendar being for the year 2011. A sign up sheet will be passed around at the next meeting for interest in the calendar. Jim Pittman - Discussed club members who do not possess membership in both CORSA and CNM. Cost for membership to CORSA is $45 per year, $90 for 26 months, and CNM's dues are $25 and $50 for the corresponding periods. The constitution states that 100% of the club members should be a member of CORSA unless they are grandfathered, and the date for that was July 1997. A new member to the club must join both CNM and CORSA simultaneously. CORSA's list of active and non-active members for our chapter was given to each attendee at the meeting. Rita stated that this issue should be settled with the members of the board and not the regular club members. Robert said he was sure many of those not on the list had indeed paid dues for both CORSA and CNM, so somehow they were not getting on the list correctly. Jim said that he will check with Robert to verify which members not appearing on the list actually joined CORSA and then inquire of CORSA how to correct their list. The issue will be discussed again at a future board meeting. Other Events Discussed - November 7th (Saturday), Annual Fundraiser at House of Covers. There will be bingo and a pot luck and a silent auction. December 5th (Saturday), Roper's Restaurant, Christmas Dinner. February, date to be determined, a garage tour organized by LeRoy. March, our anniversary dinner, possibly at the Macaroni Grill. Anne Mae Gold is taking charge of this event, in which the date is yet to be determined. Written by Art Gold, Secretary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Christmas Dinner Heula Pittman Once again, Rita Gongora has set up our annual Christmas Dinner. This year it will be held at Roper's, 8810 Central SE which is east of Wyoming. We will meet at 5:00 PM and we will have the entire restaurant reserved for us. The meal costs will be approximately $12.45 each. Dessert will be provided. More details will come later. Don't forget to bring your items to donate to the Safe House. Emma Rogers and Lee Reider will collect the donated items and see that they get delivered. We don't exchange Christmas gifts among us members; instead, we chose a worthy organization to contribute needed items. The Safe House temporarily houses folks who have been displaced from their homes, often because of domestic abuse. Many times they leave with only the clothes on their backs. Clothing for men, women, boys and girls from ages birth on up are needed. Toys, games, books, school supplies, etc. are all accepted. This organization will accept just about anything with the exception of STUFFED TOYS! Therefore, please, no stuffed toys. Please do not wrap your items. We urge you to be generous with your selection of gifts for the Safe House. If you would like for me to shop for you, I'll be glad to. Just let me know. Be sure to make your calendars for this fun evening - December 5th, 5 PM at Roper's. Bring your items for the Safe House, enjoy a good meal and fellowship together and learn the results of our "Younger Members" photo identification contest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calm Before the Storm Car Council September Meeting Report -- Robert Gold I want all of you to know that the club was represented by a Gold this month, but not the usual "Gold" rep. Art was out of town so I subbed for him at the September meeting. I was surprised to see that that there weren't many at the meeting. It seems that a little thing called the Annual Car Council Swap Meet sorta distracted the members. The Car Council's monthly meeting fell a mere one day before the swap meet and most of the council members decided to conserve their energy for work on the meet. That meant that there were only about a dozen other reps at the meeting besides me. I guess I could say that in spite of the low numbers it was an exciting meeting, but that wouldn't be telling the truth. The major activities at the meeting were setting up the chairs, looking at the cars being restored at the Old Car Garage, and talking about how well plans were preceding for the swap meet. Predictions were that the meet would be one of the best ever. So read on to see if those predictions were true. I first want to thank Pat Hall for volunteering to be an "early bird" and help with the swap meet setup on Thursday. He told me later that he set up the flags that delineated the booths. Setup work is the hardest part of the preparations and it was nice to have a CNMer helping. Pat seemed none the worse for wear when I saw him at the meet on Saturday. Our club did its duty on Saturday by helping to direct traffic. I made sure the Gold family (Alan, Javi, and I) was there early enough to help direct the first wave of exhibitors. None of us were run over, so I guess we did what we were supposed to. For those of you who haven't participated in this early morning ritual, it's a gas! You get to look over a lot of stuff as it's going in and you can plan how you'll attack field. I saw some really juicy parts and cars come in. That helped a lot in waking me up so early in the morning. After an hour of work we were relieved and we spent the rest of the morning marching through the numerous vendors. I am now the proud owner of a floor jack that my brother Alan tells me cost more than my first Corvair, and it even works! Thanks to Pat Hall I was able to get it home. It's sure nice to have friends. I did manage to resist the urge to buy any cars, therefore as I write this I am still happily married. The swap meet was an unqualified success. Lots of vendors and parts and a beautiful day to boot. I expect that the treasurer of the Car Council will have a very good report to make at the next council meeting. If you missed this one plan to attend next year's! Anyway, I guess that's all I have about the Car Council for this month. Now that the swap meet is over the council will be going into winter hibernation until January. Before long we'll be having more fun and games in 2010. See you then. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Donna Mae Mims Died Tucson Corvair Association Corvairsation - October 2009: Donna Mae Mims, 82, of Bridgeville, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009. I received twenty-three photos of members from their younger days. The contest is now closed, the score sheet is in this issue, and all the photos are shown on these two pages. If you want to participate in the contest, all you need to do is put your name on your score sheet, write in the names of members next to their photos, and get the score sheet to me by 9:00 PM on meeting night, November 4th. (Jim insisted that, since 23 photos wouldn't "come out even" on the score sheet, there had to be an even 24. So, we have an "April Fool's Joke" in November and one person has two photos. Now, who could that be?) The winner will be announced at the December 5th Christmas party. Thanks to all who contributed photos! I hope to see you at the Christmas Party. Remember, this is a contest, so no fair sharing guesses with others! -- Heula ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Route 66 Cleanup Ollie Scheflow The Club held its fourth and final cleanup of our mile of Old Route 66 on Saturday, October 10, 2009. We had a beautiful Fall day and a large turnout enabling us to finish in one hour! We didn't find any unusual items this time. Jim said he segregated out all the aluminum cans and saved them to take to Pat Hall's spring "metal recycle day" next year. Dan Palmer made a hoop out of a coat hanger and used clothes pins to attach a bag to hold it open in the wind. Yankee Ingenuity! Those participating this time were: Pat Hall, Dave Huntoon, Lube Lubert, Dan Palmer, Jim Pittman, Bill Reider, Ollie Scheflow, Mike Stickler, John Wiker and Hurley Wilvert. Thanks to all who participated in the October cleanup and those earlier in the year. Hope to see you in 2010. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To: RTLettersonline @ hfmus.com From: Jim Pittman < jimp @ unm.edu > Date: October 8, 2009 Subject: Peter Egan Editor, You folks at ROAD & TRACK should say thanks every day for Peter Egan. His November article prompts me to finally write to express my admiration and gratitude to him, and to ROAD & TRACK for publishing his words. I have been a subscriber for decades. Every month I turn to Peter Egan's column first. There's not much of a logical excuse for my continuing to subscribe to the magazine all these years, considering that about ninety-nine percent of the cars you review are cars that I could never afford to buy, and many of them, well, I doubt I could live up to their image. Peter Egan is a major reason I keep subscribing. Yes, I also appreciate the high quality of your articles and the technical information you provide. My reaction to the "Cash for Clunkers" program was somewhat like Egan's description. Yes, it's good to replace some old gas-guzzlers with more modern, more efficient cars. Yes, it's good to have provide some stimulus to the auto factories. Yes, no doubt many of the cars being traded in as "clunkers" will be much better off, permanently off the road. But as one who has devoted hours and dollars and not a little sweat, tears and even a few drops of blood to keeping my 1966 car running safely all these years, it is painful to think of a smoothly-running old car being gratuitously destroyed. Peter Egan said this so eloquently. So, thank you, Peter Egan, and thank you, ROAD & TRACK.
