Pat Hall Hello to all Corvair People. I love my Corvairs and I drive some of them almost every day. I drove my 1964 Spyder to House of Covers for our yearly fund raiser. We had a very good potluck dinner and enjoyed visiting with everyone. At the fund raiser I won one round of bingo and the jar of M&Ms. I was thrilled. That is the second time that I've won a guessing game. Thank you, Heula and Jim for the special fund raiser. About 32 people were present and we all had a good time. Those of you who were not there missed out on the fun. And, the club's treasury was increased. To add to the treasury, we made $120.00 on bingo, $157.00 on the auction and $10.25 on the M&Ms guess. Thanks guys. Christmas dinner is on Saturday the 5th at 5:00 PM at Roper's Restaurant. The address is 8810 Central SE just east of Wyoming. Hope to see everyone there. -- Pat Hall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ November Meeting Notes (11-4-09) Art Gold Meeting began with a statement by our president Pat Hall stating that Cary Hubbard is no longer Car Council representative. Yours truly, Art Gold, will remain as the sole representative for the Car Council. There was also a report that the Care and Feeding books are finished and printed. Hooray! The treasurer (Robert Gold) reported that there is $2,552.46 in the cash account and $1,151.20 in the GMAC fund, for a total of $3,703.66. The new membership committee (Dave Huntoon) reported no new members. However, Sylvan brought in a couple of guests: Duke McCraken, and Larry Yoffee. Larry has one of the cleanest white 1965 Corsa Turbos around. Beautiful car! There was also another guest at the meeting, Shirley Tanzola. She was attending our meeting in order to survey the land of the small car clubs. She possesses no Corvair, but a more modern machine, a 1999 Miata. She stayed for the entire meeting. As for the Car Council report for this month, yours truly (Art Gold), was unable to attend the meeting due to prior engagements with my chess team. Pat Hall took the reins of attending the meeting and reported that there was nothing really to speak about, with the exception of a large discussion over the finances for the council. It was reported that the council had lost approximately $2,000 last year. Most of the money loss could be attributed to the funds spent on the web site. It is a rather nice site though. Editor Jim Pittman reported on the early deadline for the newsletter (which I am really feeling at the moment) on November 19th at 9:00 PM. He also brought to the floor the concern over having 100% CORSA membership for our club members. An idea could be to make the CNM due date for dues be equal to that of CORSA's. This idea should facilitate matters of getting everyone on board with the 100% enrollment. This idea was also recommended to be brought up to the board on a later date. Jim also stated that CORSA is putting out cumulative tech supplement (taken from their issues from the last 40 years) which can be purchased in book or CD form. The book (445 pages in length) would be $45, and the CD would be $10. Both can be purchased together for the remarkable price of $55. Everyone seemed to believe that it would be a good idea to maybe purchase the items for the club. This package can also be found in the latest issue of the Communique. The sunshine committee (Heula Pittman) stated that she is still taking donations for the Christmas party, to be held at Roper's restaurant on 12-5-09. These donations are for the local Safe House, and she is still needing more. Heula stated that anything goes with the exception of stuffed animals. She went on to show the club the donations that she had already received, including, but not limited to, razors (men's and women's), socks, and deodorant. On a more somber note, there was a discussion of the passing of Tom Martin's wife. Ruth Boydston talked about her with great stories. There was also a discussion of the potluck/silent auction to be held at the House of Covers on Saturday 11-7-09, a car show at the Atomic Museum on Sunday 11-15-09, and a Veteran's Day activity at the Veteran's Memorial at Louisiana and Gibson. There was to be a flyover of F-16's. Proposed activities discussed for 2010 included a Garage Tour by LeRoy Rogers, the anniversary dinner in March, a tour of the city (over-decorated houses) in the spring, and lunch. Finally there was a discussion on the price of the CNM license plate. It was left to looking it up in an older edition of the club's Care and Feeding book. All present approved. Ray Trujillo was thanked by the board for a wonderful bingo night, and stated that it brought in great money for the club. Treasurer Robert Gold gave his report on the funds: Cash Account ($2,812.46) GMAC ($1,153.28) for a total worth of $3,965.74. Dave Huntoon did not hear from any new members, including those who visited. But, Dave said, often visitors take a few days to decide to join us. New Mexico Car Council representative (yours truly) stated that there is no meeting until January, 2010. Heula Pittman stated that there was $11 made from the M&M Count contest and asked if that money could be placed into the Sunshine Committee. The board agreed with that. Chuck will give a date for his Tour of the City activity at a later time. There will be a garage tour at the J&R Vintage Auto Museum in Rio Rancho on 2-6-10. The location is 3650-A Highway 528. The group will meet for lunch at the Range Cafe in Bernalillo at 12:00 noon. Then we'll meet at the Museum at 1:30 PM. Entry fee is $3 for all ages in groups of three or more. Robert Gold stated that the Anniversary Dinner will be on 3-20-10 (Saturday). Location TBA. Jim will put it on the calendar. Christmas dinner is still at Roper's on December 5th, at 5:00 PM. Rita is taking care of the details, which include each dinner costing $12.45. There will also be a breakfast on 1-23-10 (that's the Saturday after the next Board meeting) at 9:00 or 9:30 AM, at Jimmy's Cafe on Jefferson NE. Ray will tell us more at the January meeting. That's all folks! Written by Art Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Garage Tour LeRoy Rogers Our 2010 garage tour will be at the J & R Vintage Auto Museum in Rio Rancho on February 6, 2010. The museum is located at 3650-A Highway 528 (on Highway 528 a short distance South of Highway 550). Those who want to go to lunch will meet at the Range Cafe, located in Bernalillo at 925 Camino del Pueblo, at noon. For those who want to go directly to the museum, we should be there at about 1:30 PM. The entry fee is $3.00 for all ages in groups or three or more. Updates or changes in plans will be noted at our monthly meetings or in upcoming Newsletters. I was unable to bring the museum site up on Google maps, but I did get it on Bing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Last Reminder - Christmas Collection Heula Pittman Don't forget to take the items you have collected for "The Safe House" to our Christmas dinner at Roper's Restaurant, 8810 Central SE, just east of Wyoming. The dinner is on Saturday, December 5th, at 5 PM. Please refer to last month's newsletter (the November issue) for suggestions of needed items. Remember, DO NOT take stuffed toys and DO NOT wrap your gifts. Also, this is the night that the winners of our "Younger Members Contest" will be announced and prizes will be awarded. You don't want to miss this! So, come on out and enjoy the fun, a good meal together and visit with fellow CNMers. You don't need to worry about dressing up as this is an informal dinner! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CNM Younger Member Contest Heula Pittman Our "Younger Members" contest is over and we have a tie for first place! I will announce the winners and present their prizes at the Christmas Party. We had such a small number of score sheets turned in, and in general such poor scores, that we thought it might be fun to give everyone who attends the Christmas Party an opportunity to have another go at the contest. This time you will have the list of names of everyone who sent in a photo. This should make it easier to identify the photos! Since this is just for fun, feel free to work together as you fill out your score sheet. Remember that ONE person on the list has TWO photos! At the appropriate time at the Christmas Party, I want to ask everyone who is present to stand up and tell us in a sentence or two what the occasion for the photo was: age, place, occasion. They joined CNM in May 1983 and Tom served two terms as vice-president, 1988-1990. http://obits.abqjournal.com/obits/show/200357 MARTIN -- RoseMary, nee DoBell Martin, age 72, a native New Mexican residing in Rio Communities and formerly of Albuquerque passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. She was born in Albuquerque's St. Joseph Hospital and birthed three of her four children there. She was the second daughter of William Edwin and Elizabeth (Maddison) DoBell. RoseMary married John Thomas Martin on April 7, 1956 at the chapel on Sandia Base. She is survived by four daughters, Vanessa Lynn and Kevin Marsden, Rosanna and Randall Menck, Paula Elizabeth and David Mytyk, and Leslie Irene Churan. She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Kevin C. Marsden, Jr., and Lupe Mercado Marsden, Tara Marsden Barragan and Jesse Barragan, Lindsay Marsden Gann and Ryan Gann, Christine Marsden Sachs and Richard Harold Sachs, Patrick Thomas Marsden, Sherry Rebecca Marsden, Angela Menck, Andrew Menck, and Sarah Menck, Daniel John Menck, Chelsea Rose Mytyk, Taylor Kay Mytyk, Micaela Elizabeth Mytyk, Kyle Christopher Wood and Ashley Rose Churan. Her seven great-grandchildren will also miss her warm presence, Cassandra Lynn Barragan, Annaka Rose Barragan, Maya Kate Barragan, Audrey Elizabeth Menck, Allison Rosemary Menck, Jonah Miles Menck and Andrew Scott Menck. She passed her faith, her work ethic, and taught her children how to meet the needs of others with kindness and consideration... an enduring legacy of love. Rosie lost her father when she was 13. At this same age she obtained a job in a shop at Nob Hill that featured children's apparel. She was fiercely proud of attending Highland High School and Jefferson Junior High. Her first job on graduation in 1955 was secretary to John Riden Baugh, the manager of the Albuquerque offices of Gorman Engineering. He rewarded her performance for Christmas 1959 with the enormous bonus of $1,200. She was justly thrilled. Her husband's employment sadly took her out of Albuquerque to Omaha, Cedar Rapids, Santa Monica, Granada Hills, Lincoln, but she thrived raising her four daughters as a stay-at-home mom and new friends sprang up in her warmth. She opened her home to any and every... impressing everyone with her self-sacrificing, thoughtful and gracious nature. In 1991, she and her husband in retirement moved to Rio Communities on the golf course east of Belen. She never met a game of scrabble she didn't like, delighted in crossword puzzles and reading novels. Her main love was party bridge and the many friends who came into her life. She related each had a quality she admired and enjoyed..even when they redoubled her bid. It was with great sorrow in 2005 her health forced an end to her participation. Her favorites were Butterfingers, Cheetos, Lay's Classic Potato Chips, Golden Pride fried chicken and an evening toddy. She loved her family, her siblings, Elizabeth Heise, Steve DoBell and wife, Joanne, Keith Niggel, brother-in-law, and her Ambercare Hospice caregivers, Dr. Joseph Aragon, Nurse Linda Barela and Nurse's aide Jeanette Burch. After being a widow for many years, Rosemary's mother, Elizabeth remarried noted Albuquerque artist, John P. Reynolds... thus gaining her beloved Reynold siblings. In passing she will miss her in-laws, her friends and neighbors but will joyously join her loved ones who preceded her in death... her parents, her sister, Patricia, sister, Antoinette Niggel; her brother, Bill DoBell; and brother-in-law, Richard Heise. A Mass and Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, 101 N. 10th Street, in Belen. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society, 916 Castillo, Belen, NM 87002. Sign RoseMary's online register book at www.romerofuneralhomenm.com. First of all, a big thank you to Steve and Rita Gongora for hosting another great fundraiser at their House of Covers business. Also, thank you to everyone who donated items to the silent auction. All who came had a good time, especially the bingo winners. The winners were Sara Gold (twice) for a total of $38, Opal Zuercher won $23, Pat Hall won $18, Art Gold won $23 and Rita Gongora won $17. Pat Hall was also the winner of the "Guess the Number of M&Ms in the Jar" contest. Thank you to Heula Pittman for organizing the M&M game. For the evening CNM made out pretty well by making $120 on bingo and $158.75 on the silent auction for a grand total of $278.75. Once again I had a great time calling out the numbers for the bingo games and then paying out the winnings to the excited winners. If you didn't win at bingo this year there's always next year. I was able to download from CORSA the list of members they show as belonging to our chapter. There were not nearly as many errors as there were in June 2008, but still a few. From this list I was able to get several CORSA member numbers that I didn't have before, and I got the billing dates when our CORSA memberships expire. My list is nearby. Several of our members are either not known to CORSA or are late in their CORSA dues. Our constitution requires that all CNM members maintain concurrent membership in CORSA. Those who were CNM members prior to June 1, 1997, are "grandfathered" and do not have to join CORSA. As far as I know, Ruth Boydston is our only current "grandfathered" member. The board agreed we should make a better effort to get our members to comply with the 100% CORSA rule. The question is, how to do it? It is easier to keep up with your dues if your CNM and CORSA due dates are "in synch" and then kept synchronized by paying for the same time period (12 months or 26 months) for both. As you see from the list, some of us match our due dates, but many of us don't. If you want your due dates to be synchronized, we can help. If your CNM date is behind your CORSA date, you could pay a pro-rated amount to CNM ahead of time so as to bring your CNM date up to your CORSA date. If your CNM date is ahead of your CORSA date, then when your CORSA dues come due you could pay CNM a pro-rated amount to take you up exactly to your CORSA date. In theory, it's easy to keep your dues in synch. Our policy has been to send our members' CORSA dues in for free -- you give our treasurer the renewal card from your copy of CORSA Communique along with a check for either $70 (for 12 months) or $140 (for 26 months) and our treasurer mails a check to CORSA and you are done. The problem comes if people don't attend meetings, or if they go to the meeting but forget to bring the CORSA renewal card, or if the renewal card gets lost. Then we all have to play catch-up. A more serious question is, what about people who want to join CNM but who don't want to join CORSA? The hard answer, based on our constitution, is that they can't join CNM. The soft answer is, well, just let it slide, or get them to promise that someday they'll join up. Some of us don't like the soft answer. We say, CORSA needs members (and income) and we think it's a tremendous benefit to any Corvair enthusiast to be a member of CORSA. Those who do pay our dues are carrying weight for those who don't join CORSA. You may say, What's in it for me if I will never go to a convention and if I don't care about the monthly CORSA Communique and I don't want to buy any CORSA merchandise? Well, what's in it for you to join CNM if you don't attend meetings or participate in activities? Our constitution has the provision for 100% CORSA membership and we voted to approve it. Most of us believe that a strong CORSA helps to make a better CNM. It's not that much more expensive. It's not just a good idea, it's the law! There may still be errors in the attached list. The auction was reported to be an outstanding one! Robert Gold ran our November meeting (twenty members, two guests) at Galles Chevrolet. Guest Roger Pape soon joined the club. Per Wendell, we had $5780 in the bank. Robert told about a pleasant process with the state bureaucracy getting "Horselesss Carriage" license plates for his cars. Mark reported that past member Dave Patten had passed away. Bill reminded us of the on-going competition for the best logo design for our upcoming Tri-State. We discussed our plans for a year's worth of events for 2003. LeRoy reported on plans for the Raton Tri-State. Unusual opportunities: a trip to Trinity Site and a Corvair gathering in Mesquite, Nevada. Dennis Pleau, applying for admission to the Dummy of the Month Club, sent a story about an escalating oil leak that led to pulled threads and helicoil inserts -- then it developed, the gasket couldn't seal because the pan was seating up against the lower engine shrouding, leaving a gap! From the Internet, a story about whether it was possible to get married in heaven. An answer was provided. Getting a divorce in heaven, however, was a different matter. Also stolen from the Internet, a set of hymns selected for different vocations and driving styles. Finally, an index to all the articles, cover art, tech tips and jokes from the 12 issues published during 2002. Fourteen Years Ago - December 1995 - Volume 21 - Number 12 - Issue 243 One more time: the cover featured Santa and Rudolph, reproduced from the very first CNM newsletter cover as drawn by Mark Morgan. Our November meeting was a combined pot-luck and auction. The September NMCCC swap meet was a modest success, clearing about $1050, and CNM would receive $100 for two days' worth of gate duty. We had a report on progress on restoring the car to be raffled at the convention. A new edition of Bill Reider's CARE & FEEDING book was hot off the press. Bill McClellan reported that Francis was back in the hospital for a minor tune-up following the major overhaul he had last month. Mark Domzalski reported on a very nice time for his first attendance at the Great Fan Belt Toss. He thanked all who contributed to a great auction and pot luck, with Larry Blair's famous Elk Chili getting high marks. Mark also mentioned national and local news coverage of our convention plans. Bill told how to CARE & FEED your Corvair in the preventative maintenance department. Some tech tips from Click & Clack were pretty much useless except to produce chuckles. Finally, cartoons that mentioned cars with "engines in the back" and the 1995 Index wrapped up the issue. Twenty-one Years Ago - December 1988 - Volume 14 - Number 12 - Issue 159 The cover featured reversed Christmas trees that said "samtsirhC yrreM" so you needed a mirror to read the greeting. VP Tom Martin ran our meeting and learned we had $562 in the bank. Bill Hector's column said Mother Nature clearly prefers engines in the rear, giving as proof the cheetah, the kangaroo and the deer. He said Detroit has been wrong for years, only getting one car right: the Corvair. Our Executive Board suggested events for the coming year, including a garage tour, a rally, a car show, a Tri-State Meet, a picnic, an aspencade and a Christmas party. Tom Martin's "Ptek Ptip" article described how he purchased a car in a distant city, it mysteriously stopped on the way home, he checked everything he could think of to no effect, then finally realized it was -- out of gas! Did Tom ever get formally inducted into the Dummy of the Month Club Twenty-eight Years Ago - December 1981 - Volume 7 - Number 12 - Issue 75 The cover featured the new stainless-steel-skinned DeLorian sports car -- hey, it had the engine in the rear! Our treasury featured 338 crisp dollar bills, or maybe 33 ten dollar bills plus change. George Morin's tech tip on how the fuel gage sender works, how it goes bad and how to fix it was well received. We discussed how we could help get Corvair clubs established in remote parts of the state. The CNM constitution and amendments was published. Thirty-five Years Ago - December 1974 - Volume 1- Number 1 - Issue 1 In December we received in the mail the first issue of the club newsletter, edited, typed, copied, folded, stapled, stamped and distributed by club co-founder Mark L. Morgan. There were thirty-five members on the club roster. Some who were on that roster and are still club members include Steve Gongora, Joel Nash, Jim Pittman, Bill Reider and Sylvan Zuercher. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INDEX FOR 2009 Every Month or As Available: Regular Meeting Minutes ............
