There were enough of us to make the chore go quickly and the amount of trash seemed not excessive. There seemed to be lighter road traffic than usual but there were many groups of bicyclists, most heading east and a few heading west. Lube Lubert was first (Brand-X pickup) then Jim Pittman (1965 coupe) Geoff Johnson (1965 sedan) Robert & Javi Gold (early convertible) Brenda Stickler & Ollie Scheflow (Brand-X) David Huntoon (the yellow "library" van) and Pat Hall (early coupe). Yes, there were five Corvairs present at this event. A number of large adobe blocks were found scattered next to the road. Not enough to build a house, or even a doghouse. Otherwise, the amount of trash seemed lighter than usual. A good time was had by all. Some enjoyed coffee after the event at the Golden Corral restaurant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Air" Force President's Notes John Wiker As they say, if you don't like the weather in New Mexico, just wait, it will change. The weatherman's prediction for Saturday April 14th was dire: wind, wind, wind! On Saturday morning I was expecting to see small chunks of Arizona sailing through the air. Thanks to those brave seven who came out for breakfast at Jimmy's Cafe and the additional four who joined us for the Veterans' Memorial Tour organized by Larry Blair. As some of you know, I spent 15 years at Del Norte High School as the Air Force Junior ROTC instructor. Three times a year I would bring about 15 cadets to the Memorial to help in the three major ceremonies held each year: Memorial Day, POW/MIA Day and Veterans' Day. That's 45 visits, and all I ever saw was the Parade Field and the amphitheater. Perhaps I caught a glimpse of the Museum as I snuck in to use the facilities. Keeping track of the Cadets was like herding cats. Boy was I surprised about the detail of the memorial and grounds I had never seen before. They have a great library of military history books and a sculpture by Bill Mauldin, a famous New Mexican soldier in the European Theatre in WWII, was at front and center. How many of you have had the opportunity to peer into a Navy submarine's periscope? We saw an ancient bronze plaque, dating from 1919, naming those from the 1,750 volunteers to "The Great War" from Bernalillo County who died in service to our country. The plaque was neglected for years as "the war to end all wars" became a dim memory, and it has been located, retrieved, cleaned and installed in a new setting in this memorial. The tour was a great job, Larry. Even in the face of the April New Mexico wind gusts, you pulled it off like the pro you are. Our group was rather small but it provided six Corvairs (two earlies, four lates) to park along the S-shaped drive in front of the museum. See you all at the next event that you may choose - Corvair Car Show, Museum Car Show or Tri-State. And of course, see you all at our next regular meeting on Wednesday 2 May 2012. -- John ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Regular Meeting Minutes 4-4-2012 Art Gold Meeting came to order at 7:03 pm at North Domingo Baca Multicultural Center with 24 in attendance. Officer Reports President (John Wiker) - absent, but sent word that the Saturday April 14th breakfast at Jimmy's Cafe will be at 9:30, not 8:30 as earlier reported. Vice President (Pat Hall) - auctioned off a tachometer/dwell meter that Steve Gongora donated. The winning bid was made by Dave Huntoon. Pat introduced Bob Lange, our guest speaker. At a recent car council meeting Bob, a representative from the car show KarKix, spoke about having a forum to discuss classic cars, in which he is in negotiation with local radio stations to put on the show. Meanwhile the show can be heard at KarKix.com. He talked at length about the lost 1965 Rolls Royce of John Lennon. Its whereabouts will be revealed in a few days! Kim Patten attended the meeting, first time we have seen her in a while. Treasurer (Robert Gold) stated that the account has $4,678.60. Secretary (Art Gold) stated that he will do the bidding of the club. Membership (Larry Yoffee) talked about trying to get a flyer into the CORSA Communique about Corvair participation in the October Balloon Fiesta. Larry then told us about driving somewhere when he spotted a red Corvair being driven by a blonde girl. He gave chase, so to speak, and was able to speak to her. He learned that the red car was the same 1965 Corvair he lost a few years ago in a crash, now repaired and back in use! He invited the owner to our meeting, and who knows, she may join the cub someday. Larry mentioned the All-Corvair show at Target on Sunday 4-22 at 11:30 am-2:30 pm and urged all to bring their Corvairs. Member Reports Jim Pittman (Editor) stated that the deadline for the newsletter is Friday 4-20. Vickie Hall (Merchandise) stated that she received $7 for a jacket patch, and she gave it to the treasurer. She said everyone with a new jacket should buy a jacket patch! Heula Pittman (Sunshine) stated that everything is rocking along. She reminded the members that she is out to spread sunshine. Mike Stickler (Car Council) stated that the Museum Show will be on 5-20-12, and will feature the 100 years of Chevrolet. The council also would like to have a luncheon to celebrate old cars in Los Lunas on 7-8-12. There was a change in leadership, John Doran will be president, and Bob Agnew will be V.P. The Spring Thaw tune-up of classic cars will be on Saturday 4-21 at the Old Car Garage - call 881-2722 for information and an appointment. This is a great opportunity to get your old car tuned up and lubricated for the summer. There will be an envelope stuffing party for the museum show on 4-18 at 6pm. This year's All Clubs picnic is still being planned and will probably be at Isleta Lakes. John Wiker sent word that the club's Activity Award will be discussed at the next meeting. New Business Ollie Scheflow stated that the Route 66 Clean-up will be coming up this Saturday and we'll meet just east of the I-40 - NM333 overpass. (4-8-12) Larry Blair reminded us of the guided tour of the Veterans' Memorial on Saturday 4-14-12. We'll start with breakfast at Jimmy's Cafe on Jefferson NE at 9:30 and then caravan through town to the Memorial, located at 1100 Louisiana SE. People who wish to skip the breakfast can just go directly to the Memorial at 11:00am. Larry Yoffee reminded us that there will be an All-Corvair car show at the Target parking lot, Saturday 4-22-12, from 11am-3pm or so. Ollie Scheflow was the 50/50 winner and he gave the winnings to the club, $11.50. LeRoy Rogers is planning a garage tour in June. See the web page calendar. Steve Gongora mentioned that he had added our logo to his web page, and the new web page for the Car Council was mentioned, particularly their list of member clubs with full-color logos. Heula Pittman discussed having an Ethnic Dinner for good food, needs a facility. Tri-State discussion: May 18th-20th. Salinas, CO. There will be an attempt to get a caravan together. Steve Gongora talked about the CNM logo, and the revamp of the website, with a web counter! Talked about a garage tour in Los Alamos. Robert Gold stated that the Car Council has a great workable website now, and it should be checked out. Pat Hall wants to have a tuna. He talked about the TA Travel Center. Larry Yoffee talked about possibly having the 2014 in Chama. Talked about having places to have the Banquet and two hotels in which the clubs could stay. Jim Pittman told a story about Chama, Robert Mitchum movie (The Good Guys and the Bad Guys), and the "extra: feature on the DVD that told about how the movie was made in and around Chama, New Mexico in the early 1950s. Larry Blair made a suggestion about going to see the San Juan River diversion tunnels near Chama when the Tri-State is held there. Meeting Adjourned at 6:53 pm. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ April Board Meeting Report CNM's Roving Reporter For those curious about this month's board meeting, well, there wasn't one. Some members said they couldn't attend, some said they needed to go to the Car Council envelope stuffing party at 6:00 PM, some members said they didn't have any club business to discuss anyway. So, the meeting, attended by John Wiker, Lube Lubert, Vickie Hall and Pat Hall, just kind of fizzled out. See you next month when we may do better! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tour of NM Veterans Memorial Lee Reider The Corvair Club's tour of the New Mexico Veteran's Memorial on April 14th was a thought-provoking and sobering journey back in time. The earliest historical periods memorialized were before my lifetime, but I remembered my mother's strong feelings of sorrow for the losses of World War I and her love of Country which were very evident in her solemn and prayerful observance of "Armistice Day" on November 11 each year as I was growing up in the 1930s. The World War II Memorial was the most poignant for me. I had attended a movie with a cousin a few years older than I on the afternoon of December 7, 1941. As we passed the open door of a drug store on the way home, we heard the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor on a radio broadcast. When we arrived back at my family's apartment, everyone was huddled around the radio in shock at the news. In recent years, my cousin has called me on December 7 each year to remind me of that day. As we continued to each succeeding memorial, I was saddened by the remembrance of the losses of so many lives that came as a result of each additional conflict. The most sobering realization was to learn that the largest loss of American lives in a single conflict was during the Civil War. I remembered recently reading a copy of a speech given by a heavy-hearted President Lincoln in which he said something to the effect that the terrible bloodshed of that war had been related to the terrible bloodshed that accompanied slavery. Thank you to Larry Blair for arranging and leading the tour. Lee Reider ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ May We Never Forget... Russ McDuffie Although it was a windy and blustery day, our tour of the Veterans' Memorial helped bring home the sacrifice our men and women have given for this great country we live in. War isn't pretty, War isn't all glorious, but thank God we have young Men and Women that chose, and continue to choose, to serve for us in all capacities of military service. It was a wonderful, and sobering, reminder of this, which our astute and knowledgeable tour guide, our own Larry Blair, gave as we toured the 15 acre site off Louisiana and Gibson. It was a small handful of us that were able to see this magnificent facility and all the efforts volunteers have put into this place. From a well-stocked Library, the awesome visual displays, a very cool periscope, to the Obelisks outside that recognize every battle in which a New Mexican has served. Larry was able to give us insight that only someone who has been there could, and one who has dedicated personal time in making this facility what it is. There is so much to see and read that more than a full day would be needed to encompass all that is on offer here. For those that couldn't make it, you missed a definite highlight of this year's CNM events. Take time to see this, you won't be disappointed. Larry, Sir... Thank You... Thank You for your service to our Great Country, this wonderful memorial, your fellow veterans, and to us, for helping us remember. To all the veterans in our Corvair Club... Thank You! My hat is off, my head is bowed, my hand on my heart... God Bless America. Russ McDuffie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Appreciation: Larry Blair Jim Pittman Our Veterans' Memorial tour guide on April 14th was Larry Blair, a long-time CNM member who has provided much of value to the club over the years. Larry joined us in 1985 and served one term (1994-1995) as president and one (2001-2002) as vice-president. He is known for his low-key and casual attitude, but he plans and carries out amazing activities for the club. A signal achievement was the 2001 tour of the Big-I project when he arranged for Van Groves of Twin Mountain Construction to invite us to visit. Not only was Mr Groves knowledgeable and willing to answer all questions, but we were greatly impressed at the technology required to construct a major highway interchange. Larry often brings Corvair parts to meetings to illustrate his tech talks: a gasoline heater, an instrument panel, early turn signals, and an entire early front suspension! Your Editor is not likely to forget that time in Durango when we were scheduled to ride the narrow-gauge railway to Silverton. To avoid a parking problem, my dad and I accepted Larry's offer to ride to the train station with him and Kathy. The next thing we knew, we two six-foot-one guys were trying to fold ourselves into the tiny back seat of Larry's early convertible - top-up! The drive through Durango was nearly as memorable as the subsequent train ride. It was a Tri-State to remember, for sure. Some of us remember going to board meetings at the comfortable conference room at AMAFA when Larry worked there as the city's field engineer and executive engineer, and some of us remember a terrific carburetor rebuild session at Larry's garage, supervised by carbmeister Sylvan Zuercher. Larry's distinctive dark green 1964 "Spyder" convertible has been a star attraction at many CNM events and has been photographed more than a few time for the newsletter. Larry spent twenty years or so with the Army as an engineer and at a meeting in 2003 gave us an illustrated talk on combat engineering in Viet Nam. He provided insights into that war that few of us had been exposed to before. After retiring Larry has assumed volunteer duties with the VA and the Veterans' memorial. If you want to be present at another tech session at Larry's garage, be sure to attend the June 16th Garage Tour being organized by LeRoy Rogers. There will be plenty of Corvair objects and Corvair lore to discuss. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes Go to Ten CNMers: Mary Alice Scheflow May 2 Jerry Goffe May 6 Marilyn Foster May 11 Tommie J. The Corvair is designed so that under panic braking conditions, the rear brakes will lockup before the front ones do. This will allow the vehicle to still be steered safely and likely avoid an accident. The possible problem though, is that the rear end may try to swap ends if the wheels lock up. Modern front-wheel drive cars are designed to lockup the front wheels first. The thinking here is to keep the vehicle on a straight path, although not steerable. The Corvair's method seems more desirable. Under braking conditions, the effects of the vehicle's weight are shifted forward so that the front wheels provide an increased braking effort. This is an advantage with the Corvair, and provides a greater percentage of front wheel braking as the braking effort increases. There is very little published data available on stopping distances for stock Corvair brakes. This is surprising, but it seems like none of the automobile magazines considered it important to determine stopping distances when performing other performance tests in their reports. Several test reports on the 1960-64 models did complained about severe brake fade after only one or two repeated high speed stops. They also encountered water affecting the brakes by pulling to one side and reduced stopping ability during rainy sessions. Their solution was to instal the factory sintered metallic brake option. For 1965-69, Corvair brakes were much improved by adopting the larger Chevelle brakes and reversing them. Thus, putting the Chevelle's front brakes on the rear Corvair wheels (with an added hole in the shoes for connecting the emergency brake cable), and the Chevelle's rear brakes on the front of the Corvair. Only two actual stopping test reports have been found. One test of a 1961 Monza published in Motor Life, May 1961, was 34 feet, 30 to 0 MPH and 143 feet, 60 to 0 MPH. Another test in Motor Trend, January 1965, for a 1965 Corsa gave 32 feet, 30 to 0 MPH and 146 feet, 60 to 0 MPH. These stopping distances did not include the driver reaction time, and are considered to be quite good for that era considering the bias-pty tires then in use. CORVAIR STOPPING DISTANCES Stopping Distance in feet Corvair Source 30 to 0 60 to 0 ========== =============== ======= ======= 1961 Monza Motor Life 5/65 34 143 1965 Corsa Motor Trend 1/65 32 146 THE HARD-HARDER BRAKE TEST Larry Claypool recommends that you frequently perform his Hard-Harder brake test. This test will confirm the integrity of your brake system, and help avoid those surprises that can lead to total loss of braking capability while the vehicle is in motion and in imminent danger if the vehicle cannot be stopped. To perform this test simply put both feet on the brake pedal while the car is safely stopped (engine off) and push as hard as you can. Then push even harder. Now hold it. If the pedal remains firm and does not go to the floor, all is well. But if the pedal goes to the floor (either slowly or suddenly) there is a problem that needs to be fixed before you drive any further. I checked a few days ago and over 20 rooms were booked, she had originally offered 30 rooms but she said up to 35 or so if need be. After that the price may be higher. From all accounts both RMC and PPCC have numerous members planning on driving to Salida. It may be a close count between RMC/PPCC/CNM for the participation award this year. I also understand that several from the Wichita area will be driving out. In addition to the parking lot show 'n shine yours truly is going to hold the last raffle for an afghan that Ruth had made in advance for this year. RMC also has managed to find some door prizes so nothing is needed by either PPCC or CNM to add to the mix. In case someone may have forgotten, the date is May 18-20. The phone number for reservations is: 1.719.539.2895. In the 'good old days' there were many Corvairs in the Salida/Buena Vista/Canon City area. I am sure that many of the locals will be wandering around the show on Saturday to tell tales about their cars and a few might have some parts tucked away that could be for sale. The voting will be as usual for the car show participants, peer judging for the various models and the 'best of show' will be a count of the local population. I am planning the typical classes: early open and closed/late open and closed/FC and lastly wagons. I hope to see you there. The weather was warm so the overhead door at the Old Car Garage was opened, giving us a great view of the classics in the parking lot. Thanks Bob Agnew! The meeting began with the absence of both the Treasurer and the President. The meeting was called to order by John (J.D.) Doran who announced that Dennis Seibert had resigned as President due to poor health. This was followed by a discussion of how to address this change. The result: Interim President - J.D. Doran and Vice-President - Bob Agnew. Both the "interim" positions will be filled at the elections due for the summer. Here is your chance to become the Car Council President! Following this discussion the Treasurer arrived, so at least we had the treasury in the hands of an elected official. On to the meeting itself. After the trauma of the President's resignation, it was reported that the IRS-related change to the Council's status had not progressed. Thank you IRS. Concerning the May 20, Museum Car Show, things were progressing quite nicely. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to help at the show. Traditionally CNM'ers have helped count votes (in an air conditioned room with comfy chairs.) FREE PIZZA!! Now that I have your attention, I want you to know there will be an envelope stuffing party on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:00 PM at the Old Car Garage. Everyone attending gets FREE FOOD. I know that I'll be there for sure and alas miss, the CNM Board meeting. Following was a positive report about the Council's "new and improved" web page. We finally have someone in charge who is making progress. To show you how things are going with the site,we have had over 180,000 hits in the past month alone. Take a look and see what you think. Go to htpp://www.nmcarcouncil.net and let me know your impressions. The Treasurer reported that the Car Council is in the black (what a surprise.) If you want more detailed information, see me. Remember it's on a "need to know" basis. Other topics of interest included the Spring Thaw to be held on Saturday, April 21 to benefit Cuidando los Ninos Daycare Center. Come on by and get your car checked out. Just call Desiree at 881-2722 for an appointment. The meeting wrapped up with talk about the upcoming August Car Council picnic. The Dukes Car Club are heading the effort. The picnic should take place at the Isleta Lakes. There will be a nominal $8-$10 per carload admission charge. We were assured that this was quite a bargain for such a nice place located so close to Albuquerque. Stay tuned for more information. That's about it for this month. Circle May 20 on your calendar and we'll see you at the Museum Car Show. Detailed information about that show will be in the May newsletter. -- Robert Gold ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2012 New Mexico Car Council Car Show Robert Gold Sunday, May 20 is the date of this year's Car Council Museum Car Show. The show will be held at the Albuquerque Museum in Old Town, 2000 Mountain Road NW in the parking lot directly in front of the museum. (Next year the show will be held someplace else due to museum renovations, so this will be your last chance to have a free day at the museum for at least a couple of years.) The registration fee for this year's show is $10.00, unchanged from last year. This car show should be really special to the members of Corvairs of New Mexico. It will celebrate the 100 years of Chevrolet. You know, Chevrolet, that "bow tie" company. Their logo is all over our beloved Corvairs. If you aren't out of town having a good time at this year's Tri-State, bring your Corvair and meet us at the north parking lot of the Sheraton Old Town at 800 Rio Grande Blvd NW at 7:00 am and we'll enter the show around 7:15. We'll set up in a group and have a wonderful time. By the way, next year there will be no date conflict with the Tri-State. Lots of visitors. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ YEARS AGO IN MAY--- Jim Pittman 07 2005 - VOL 31 Nr. 5 - # 356 Our cover depicted the sudden rise and gradual fall of our treasury balance. Cover photo, Ruth and Tarmo walked to our meeting at Galles. Two nice early models were in the background. Wendell reported our funds as $3081 which included $500 from our sponsor. We thought about whether we should go in a group to an Isotopes ball game, whether we should go on a tour to the Jemez with another car club, whether we should get together with an out-of-town couple for dinner, and whether to give our sponsor a membership in CORSA. President David talked about getting the newsletter from the web page to save postage and to get it in color. We tried to find out how many members would like to get the newsletter on-line and quit getting the paper copy each month. Your editor thanked Robert Gold for his thought-provoking "car nut" newsletter stories and articles. Heula reported on a successful 31st anniversary party. Steve Goodman wrote about all those pesky sources of Corvair oil leaks and told about a much better tail light socket: part number S-75 from Car Quest. There were twenty-eight nice photos in this issue! 14 1998 - VOL 24 Nr. 5 - # 272 Dennis ran our meeting. A new member was Joel Craig, 1964 Spyder owner. A guest was Peter de Wolf. Other new members were Denis and Dee Long of Alamogordo who had the 1966 Corsa convertible that was spotted several months earlier. Wendell reported our funds at $7,803.54. We planned to help with the May 17 Museum Car Show and the Sep 26-27 Car Council swap meet. We thanked Steve for the AT&T museum tour and thanked Jerry, Paul and Mark for the mystery tour afterward. Tarmo reported on recent preparations for our Tri-State meet. Details of the Francis Boydston Memorial flag pole were discussed at the board meeting. Robert Gold reported that the State Fair would like to have us back on September 27th. Ollie would like to have the Route 66 clean up on April 25th. Paul said that he had so much fun helping on the mystery tour that he would like to set up an autumn rally. Ruth donated a poster that Francis prepared for our 1977 Winrock Car Show. Dennis and Debbie planned to attend the National CORSA convention in Saint Louis and planned to go via Branson, Missouri. From somewhere we obtained a nice article comparing early and late Corvairs, with the pros and cons of each from the point of view of an enthusiastic CORSA member. Factors such as styling, engineering and day-to-day livability were mentioned. Which type is your favorite? We published an article by Wendell Morrin from The Detroit Area's AIRCOOLER about Hantavirus, mice and old cars. When trying to rescue an abandoned old car, be extra careful to avoid breathing dusty mouse droppings which could give you the dreaded and potentially fatal hantavirus. Finally, Marybeth Claypool of the Chicago AIRHORN told us why late speedometer cables were so likely to fail, why replacement cables were inferior to originals, and how to install a replacement cable with some chance of having it last a while. 21 1991 - VOL 17 Nr. 5 - # 188 The cover showed two VLA radio telescope antennas as recalled by young artist Joe Barbarone. The bank held $640 for us. Guest Terry Price had a 1962 Lakewood. Guest Marshall Navarro wanted to find a late coupe body to install a V-8. Past member Ben Abeyta visited and re-joined; he had an auto 1966 with air. Wayne Christgau had name tags to distribute. Bill Reider showed demo copies of the membership handbook. We looked forward to an All-Chevy Show. Mark Martinek said that Chevrolet had a toll-free number you could call with your VIN and they would tell you all about your old Chevrolet. President Steve Gongora reported on a successful tour of the VLA, organized by Jerry Goffe. Steve also provided a tech tip, with a dimensioned drawing, showing how to set up high-performance speakers in your Corvair. A tip from Vair Views told how to repair a backup light switch from the 1961-1965 models. 28 1984 - VOL 10 Nr. 5 - # 104 The cover showed that frisky late coupe slugging through the snow again. Bill Hector's meeting minutes said we had $302 and Sylvan showed our tenth-anniversary patch design. Chuck reported on a fun Sunday rally. Bill Reider discussed current emissions requirements and estimated how well our Corvairs would do. Jim Pittman reported on a Road & Track article on special oil requirements for turbocharged engines. A tip from the Tucson club pointed out a change in the ignition rotor for 1969; you should not use this rotor in your 1962-1968 Corvair. Finally, you could read all about radio frequency interference in your car radio and how to reduce it. 35 1977 - VOL 3 Nr. 5 - # 025 We planned a Mystery Run with MG club members. Dan Simpson spoke on body work: joining the front of one wrecked Corvair to the rear of another, producing a new, good Corvair. We had a letter from Mark Morgan, in Florida with the Navy. He complained about a lack of mountains and green chile. Mark included a short article giving the pros and cons of buying a new car and concluded we'd be better off fixing up our old Corvairs than buying any current new car! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ == END ==
