"Air" Force President's Notes
John Wiker

Until Wednesday the 19th I really had little to say in my newsletter column this
month. Then it had to happen. I thought Summer was mostly over, but it's still
here officially till Saturday the 22nd. My Corvair is well aware of that fact.
My wife's Honda has been in the repair shop and she has been using my Prius and
that is why I have been driving my Corvair rather heavily lately.

On Wednesday it was off to school, then because I had no hot food all day, I
left home early for the staff meeting so I would have time to stop at Coaches
Sports Grill to get my favorite Reuben sandwich. I parked the car and was inside
for about an hour. I came out and started the car (it started okay) and pulled
out of the parking spot. I only got as far as the entrance of the lot when it
died. And now it would not start.

The first thing I thought of was "Vapor Lock" because I had seen Pat Hall get
the same symptoms on the way to the Tri-State two years ago. I needed to cool
the fuel pump. So, I took the ice cubes out of my leftover ice tea from Coaches
and put them on the fuel pump.

No luck, so panic set in and I made several calls to others who by now were on
their way to the meeting. First on the scene was Robert Gold. He tried pounding
on the accelerator harder than I would ever think of doing, but to no avail.
Next to arrive was Jim Pittman who agreed with our idea of Vapor Lock but
suggested that I did not get enough ice cubes on the pump. Someone said that we
should also put some ice on the fuel lines too. Before we could try that, Pat
Hall arrived. Doctor Pat took over the operating room. He loosened the fuel line
feed tubes, loosened the fuel pump and started pumping it (sort of like milking
a cow) to get some fuel flow going. With a combination of manual fuel pumping
and the 30 minute cool down period, we began to get fuel coming out of the loose
fitting. Success!

We tightened all the loose fittings and the fuel pump hold-down bolt and tried
to start the engine. It started right up. Put away tools and head out to go to
the meeting. We got there only five minutes late by my watch.

Thanks to all those who helped out. What other club would have so many
volunteers to help out a member who has no mechanical ability?

I got home and drove the car Thursday to school and back with no problems. But
Doctor Pat and Jim and Robert have advised me that an electric fuel pump -- with
on/off switch -- is in my future, so this will never happen again!

Hope all of your cars are in shape for the "Fall Rush" of activities we have
planned. We have plenty of them. See you at one of them, or see you at the next
meeting. -- John

Meeting Minutes 09-05-2012
Art Gold

Meeting came to order at 7:06 pm at the North Domingo Baca Multicultural Center
with twenty-two members and guests in attendance. We met outside in the patio -
a nice location - since our rain-damaged room was still not repaired.

Officer Reports

President (John Wiker) talked about the 20th Make-a-Wish car show. Quite
successful. Discussed the fly-in to be held at the Moriarty Airport this
Saturday. Classic cars are invited for a display.

Vice President (Pat Hall) brought a couple of guests, Herbert and Ron Keithley.
Later in the meeting he asked for volunteers to run for office. If you want to
be a CNM officer, call Pat to get your name on the slate of nominees.

Treasurer (Robert Gold) stated that our bank account has $4,651.62.

Secretary (Art Gold) stated he is getting his car painted "fire-engine-red"
described by someone else as "arrest-me-red" but for sure, RED.

Membership chair (Larry Yoffee) talked about the "Hot Air and Corvairs" event in
October. So far we know of three out-of-town guest couples planning to drive
their Corvairs to the event. He suggested a welcoming committee for the event to
meet at Target (I-25 & Paseo del Norte) on Friday October 5th at about 6:00 PM.
The tour to Santa Fe would occur on Saturday October 6th. The meeting time is
9:00 AM on Saturday morning at the Valero Sandia Casino gas station on Tramway.
We'll head for Old Route 66 and go to Madrid and Cerrillos. We'll continue to
Santa Fe where Tarmo Sutt will spearhead a tour, perhaps concentrating on
historic features such as the cathedral, the oldest house in Santa Fe, the
miraculous stairway. Return via I-25 and US 85 (El Camino Real) to a dinner
arranged by Russ McDuffie, at El Bruno's on 4th street, for about $20-25 per
person. He urged a good showing. Finally, all will meet Sunday morning October
7th to go with classic cars to the Balloon Fiesta. Exactly where we will meet
and when, well, we'll figure that out. A suggestion: Victory Christian School,
El Pueblo & 2nd Street? Count on being there by 6:30 AM! Final details will be
discussed at the October membership meeting.

Tri-State (Larry Yoffee) also discussed preparations for the 2014 Tri-State,
including the topics of catering ($20 per person), banquet room, and tours in
and around Chama, New Mexico. Larry said the obvious number one attraction of
Chama, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway, is rather expensive and we should
organize some less expensive local tours and other activities. He proposed a
scenic drive up to the Colorado border, for example. We do have plenty of time
to plan.

Tarmo Sutt told us about a prior Tri-State in 1998 in which we had a similar
situation: a small town, local caterers, etc. It was in Lake City, Colorado and
was a great success.

Robert Gold stated that for the Balloon Fiesta car show on 10-7, we will
probably meet at 7:00 AM at the train station off of El Pueblo. The information
has not yet been given out by the Rainbow Riders car club. He also stated that
having the Corvairs peppered throughout the show is just dandy. Robert also
discussed a new member (Floyde Adams) from the southern part of the state,
Mimbres, New Mexico. We can't find an application form from him.

Russ McDuffie suggested that for the Balloon Fiesta car show on 10-7, the
Corvairs stage at the school off of El Pueblo near Second Street.

Member Reports

Jim Pittman (Editor) stated that it's a short month and the deadline is Friday
9-21 for the newsletter. Jim told us about our Tularosa member, Richard Finch,
who is now in a nursing home. He talked about the possibility that Richard's
nine Corvairs, an Ultra Van and Corvair powered airplanes may be on the market
soon. A very sad situation.

Vickie Hall (Merchandise) talked about our receiving First Place from CORSA for
the Enchanted Corvairs newsletter. She reminded us that we won first place in
2005, third place in 2010 and now first place in 2012 for our 2011 newsletters.
Heula commented that Jim should be awarded one Bronze medal and two Gold medals
for his efforts. Thanks, Jim, for a job well done! Vickie proceeded to update
the club on her duties concerning club merchandise. She will be giving the
treasurer $15 for the sale of recycled materials. She also has a check for $10
from Paul Campbell for two Care & Feeding books.

Heula Pittman (Sunshine) talked about giving welcome bags to the out-of-town
guests who come in for the Balloon Fiesta.

Robert Gold (Car Council) stated that the meeting was very exciting. It was a
very small meeting with premium parking. The picnic was a success. The 503
conversion is in process and may drag on forever. Robert says that our club
should never consider doing this! The swap meet is on September 28-29-30 so is
not in conflict with the State Fair car show which is September 23rd. There was
controversy over purchasing a BBQ grill, with the main problem apparently being
the new rules resulting from the 503 conversion. Stay tuned.

"Hot Air & Corvairs 2012"
Larry Yoffee

As you know, our upcoming event designed around this year's Albuquerque
International Balloon Fiesta is almost here.

At this time, we have six "Corvair Guests" (for a total of thirteen people)
joining us for this event. Collectively they are driving a 1960 coupe, a 1961
Lakewood, a 1966 Monza coupe, a 1963 Rampside and a 1962 convertible. Our guests
are coming from Colorado, Illinois and California.

Friday OCT 5th 6:00 PM

On Friday, October 5th at 6:00 pm, we will do a "Meet & Greet" with our guests.
They have all been instructed to meet at the Target store parking lot at Paseo
del Norte and I-25, the same place where we held our Spring Fling Corvair show.
Following introductions, we will convene to a nearby restaurant where we will
eat and discuss the next two days' events. We might even talk about Corvairs. We
just might. Please come and join us.

All the details of the weekend may be found at my web site:
www.CorsaTurbo180USA.com .

Saturday OCT 6th 9:00 AM

In addition to Friday's activity as above, we are also meeting on Saturday at
9:00 a.m. at the Valero Sandia Casino gas station to begin our caravan tour via
Tramway, Old Route 66 and Old North 14 to Santa Fe. Tarmo and Kay Sutt will lead
us from either Los Cerillos or Madrid (TBD) to Santa Fe for a walking tour of
the historic district and plaza. We will have lunch somewhere along the way.
Once the walking tour is completed, we will return to Albuquerque.

Saturday OCT 6th 5:00 PM

On our return to Albuquerque via I-25 and Bernalillo and Fourth Street, we will
dine at El Bruno's Restaurant on north 4th street from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Location is 8806 4th Street NW.

Sunday OCT 7th 7:00 AM

On Sunday morning we will meet at the Los Ranchos Rail Runner train station at
7:00 a.m. and join other clubs for the 2012 Albuquerque International Balloon
Fiesta's Mass Ascension. Entry is free with your "classic car" and the picture
taking opportunities are legendary.

So, the time is almost here for Corvairs of New Mexico's first "Hot Air &
Corvairs" and it should be a blast. Be there, or, be round and full of hot air!

Any other questions, please call Larry at 505-321-5909.

State Fair Car Show 2012
Robert Gold

Another successful State Fair Car Show is now history. Where have the years
gone?

When I began being the Show Manager of the show I had lots of hair and most of
it was black. Sixteen years later here I sit here, no black anywhere and not
much hair either. Still, with all the changes in my life I still get a thrill
when the cars first meet at the old Furr's parking lot and head into the Fair. I
forgot to mention also that 16 years ago the Furr's Cafeteria was still there
and in business.

One thing I find fascinating about Corvair events through the years is going
over pictures of the cars on display. If you simply look at the cars you'll
never figure out when the picture was taken. All you see is our wonderful
looking cars that look the same as they did in the 1960s. So if you plan to come
back in another life make sure it's as a Corvair. You'll look great forever.
With that said I guess it's time to talk about this year's event. This year's
event was particularly gratifying for the Gold family.

When we arrived at the meeting place, those in my family displaying cars
included both my son Javi with a 1966 Corsa, and my daughter Sara with her sexy
1964 lime green Monza. The Gold family has fully entered the next generation
with CNM. We were met by more than thirty other CNM'ers with their gleaming
beauties. The total this day was 16 cars. After the traditional "photo op" we
proceeded into the fairgrounds and to our place of honor along Heritage Ave. It
never gets old, caravaning into the fairgrounds and seeing all the looks we get.
The air is crisp and the sun is just beginning to rise. Isn't life grand?

Another nice thing about doing the fair show for so long is that we've developed
a routine after entering the fair. For anyone wishing to have an early morning
laugh, just be there when we're parking our cars. Just imagine watching 16 cars
and trucks trying to angle park! Let's see, turn that steering wheel right, no
left, no right? You get the idea. But after all the action we get settled in and
watch as the fair comes to life. At least most of us do. What I do is plop in my
chair and snooze until Anne Mae wakes me up to go to breakfast. As in previous
years, breakfast was provided by my true love, Anne Mae. That's another reason
to attend the show, all that wonderful food and even cake for dessert! After
that breakfast, it's nap number two. As the day warms up, so does the crowd. We
become the center of attention for fairgoers who want to ask about the cars and
tell us their own Corvair stories. Stories that include their Corvair with the
4-cylinder engine or their Spyder bought new in 1965. Get what I mean?

After food, fun, and more food the day comes to an end when, en masse, the Vairs
and the Classic Chevys caravan out of the fair to the delight of the crowd. What
a great way to spend the day.

Next is a listing of all the folks who attended this show and what they drove.
If you have some free time take a look at past newsletter articles written about
this show that Jim Pittman has online and marvel like I do over how many
different cars and people have participated in the Fair Car Show. We continue
year to year to have a nice turnout, but the cars constantly change as well as
which members who are driving them. I feel that this shows how strongly the club
supports this show. I really appreciate your efforts.

So here are this year's cars:

   Car Driven by Groovy Remarks
=================== ================ =========================================
 1. 1962 Rampside Anne Mae Gold I finally let her drive this!
 2. 1952 Greenbrier Javier Ortiz These friends of mine are now officially
regulars and family at the Fair.
 3. 1964 500 Annette Saiz Annette makes sure every year that I have
a car for her to drive.
 4. 1964 Monza Sara Gold The one the only lime green Corvair!
 5. 1966 Corsa Javi Gold Dell Patton's Flowmaster exhaust still lives.
 6. 1966 Corsa Vert Robert Gold I marvel at how straight this car is.
 7. 1962 Greenbrier Mike & Brenda Stickler Nice to see this old friend of a van
                                             back at the show.
 8. 1964 El Camino Art Gold Did he mean to enter the Classics Chevy Show?
 9. 1964 Spyder Pat & Vickie Hall Beautifully turbo!
10. 1966 Monza John Wiker He says he needs a paint job. I disagree.
11. 1966 500 4-dr Sally Williams Air-less suspension.
12. 1965 Corsa Vert Russ McDuffie Truly a unique car.
13. 1965 Corsa Larry Yoffee Mr. Yoffee, the hardest working man in CNM.
14. 1960 Monza Geoff Johnson If you want to see a really nice 1960 Monza,
be sure to give Geoff a call.
15. 1961 Lakewood Anne Johnson A car so nice that I had one just like it.

The glory days are past when we awarded lots of ribbons (can you believe over
70?) for lots of weird classes. Financial concerns have resulted in awards just
for the traditional classes. Here are those "best of the best" cars that got the
purple ribbons this year:

1. Best car, early ('60-64) Pat and Vickie Hall.....1964 Spyder
2. Best car, late ('65-69) Larry Yoffee............1965 Corsa
3. Best Forward Control Anne Mae Gold...........1962 Greenbrier
4. Best Gold Family Car Sara Gold...............1964 Monza

Thank you everyone for your help and support in putting on this show. See you
again next year!

What's Your Sign, Pat Hall?
A Trip to a Street Sign Graveyard
Robert Gold

The other day when Anne Mae and I visited Vickie and Pat Hall at their
Corvair estate down in Los Lunas we got to see a sight worth reporting to the
CNM membership. It seems that every time I go there I see something really,
really neat. That usually means it's something cool related to Corvairs.
However, this time we saw something memorable, but not Corvair. There, spread
out in front of us, were mounds of street signs from Albuquerque. It was an epic
collection.

I think most of you know that the Halls are expert in obtaining and selling
recyclables of all kinds. Whether it is an old crane that no longer works or
tons of exotic metals, the Halls know how to get it and how much it's worth.

It's the metal thing that led to the Halls having signposts from Albuquerque. It
may be only a pile of mixed metals to them, but it's where I live to me. There
was pile after pile of street signs. Those familiar green and white
reflectorized signs were everywhere.

What surprised me was how nice many of the signs were. Included in the
collection were combination signs on poles that contained a stop sign along with
two street signs. We were very surprised to see a combo unit that had previously
been installed just two blocks from my house.

I want to thank Pat and Vickie for a fun day filled with conversation and a tour
of their yard. I'll always remember seeing a bit of Albuquerque in Los Lunas. I
know they'll sell those piles for the cost of the metal, but I can't help
imagining the signs adorning newly bulldozed streets in remote areas near Rio
Rancho.

Also, I won't forget that I now have my own sign treasure thanks to the Halls.
Anyone who visits me can see just a bit of the Hall's stash.

YEARS AGO IN OCTOBER

      2005 - VOL 31
      Nr.10 - # 360

On the cover: Corvair owners seem to be always standing around our engine bays.
New member Robert Garrecht owns a 1966 Corvair. Wendell reports $2,814.82 in
treasury. City Councilor Craig Loy spoke to us about the "No Cruising"
ordinance. Tech Talk: Wendell told how to install late brakes on early Corvair.
Steve & Sylvan posed for a photo next to Steve's "new" red Rampside. This was a
"before" photo and you should see it now!

A report by Wendell told about our tour to J & R Vintage Auto Museum, to
Ponderosa Winery and to Gilman Tunnels. It was a great fall tour! We were making
plans for a Potluck and Auction dinner, and we needed a logo for next year's
Montrose Tri-State. Sylvan provided a short history lesson on the history of the
Tri-State meets which started in March 1967. A very few members who went to that
one are still around. Robert Gold told a tale of replacing front springs and
shocks on a Forward Control and a follow-up tech article by Geoff Johnson gave
us more details. We had a nice letter of thanks from Paul Hopkins describing his
40th wedding anniversary, aided by the late yellow coupe of John Wiker.

      1998 - VOL 24
      Nr.10 - # 276

A Rampside and a Corvan adorned our cover, along with the balloon logo for the
CNM convention. Dennis ran our meeting and Wendy said we had $5880 in the bank.
Kay & Tarmo were the "parents" of an 18-year-old exchange student from Sweden.
Bill & Lee and Chuck & Julie were the only CNM members who attended the NMCCC
picnic where Bill's fan belt toss game was a big hit. There was discussion of
the move to create a Transportation Museum in downtown Albuquerque; a problem
was where to get the $3.2 million to buy the railroad's building.

This issue was full of tech tips. Benny Abeyta told about fixing slop in a
Forward Control shifter. Mark Domzalski told in detail how he installed an
electric fuel pump on a 1966 Monza. An article by Norm Helmkay was titled "The
Powerglide Brake" and said -- well, you should read it to get the full meaning
of the title. Let's just say, the Powerglide is one tough transmission to
survive being shifted into reverse when cruising down the freeway at fifty MPH.
A discussion from Virtual Vairs told why you should not put your spare tire (or
bags of sand) in your Corvair trunk. Finally, Sylvan told us about seeing the
SURF BALLROOM in Clear Lake, Iowa when he visited our former member Wayne
Christgau.

      1991 - VOL 17
      Nr.10 - # 192

A white Greenbrier with dark stripe adorned our cover. Sylvan introduced new
member Bob Carlson. Wendy said we had $465.95 to spend. Members said they had a
good time at Flagstaff; Larry Blair's Spyder got top prize. Our sponsor Milt
Sanchez reported that Ed Black Chevrolet was to be sold to Ken Johns and moved
to Lomas and Louisiana NE. Rossie Morris of Sundance Automotive talked to us
about his adventures driving a Model-T in the Great American Race.

President Steve Gongora complained that the year was going by in a blur, and
he'd probably agree that time is passing even faster these days. Steve pointed
out how fortunate we are for the quality of people in our Club. That's still
true today. Bill Lawless previewed our excursion to Rancho de Chimayo for a
pleasant lunch. Tech tips included wintertime paint protection, more places to
look for vacuum leaks, how and why to prime your oil pump after a rebuild,
retrieving something you dropped into the intake manifold, alternator ball
bearings, brake bleeding and steering gear adjustments.

      1984 - VOL 10
      Nr.10 - # 109

On the cover, CNM members stared at the tail of a B-52 at the Atomic Museum
located at Kirtland AFB. Your editor said that walking around among all those
casings of hydrogen bombs gave him the willies. We had no key to Ed Blacks so
our September meeting was under the stars. Bill Reider's column discussed
cylinder heads and included many part numbers. Clayborne announced details of
the Christmas party. Tech tips told of shock installation and fuel filter
changing.

      1977 - VOL 03
      September/October

State Fair car show awards went to Francis Boydston, Clay Keen, Benny Abeyta,
Steve Gongora, Hector Gongora, Glen Thompson, Doug Morgan and Joe Vertrees. A
car show at Winrock Shopping Center had at least eight Corvairs, including James
Giblin's 1961 Lakewood and Brian Ballou's 1966 V-8 Corvair. Los Alamos member
Ike Meissner planned a "rally race" for the club in Pojoaque, with lunch at "The
Line Camp" restaurant. A club dinner at Bella Vista on North 14 was well
attended. Glen Thompson resigned as newsletter editor. Baxanne Sutt was willing
to take over the job, at least for this issue, which turned out to be the last
one for the year 1977.
