An Afternoon of Golf
John Wiker

A golf team of Corvair owners played at Kirtland AFB Saturday in the first
tournament of the year.

The team consisted of Sam Snead Wiker, Jack Nicolaus Trujillo, Arnold Palmer
Huntoon and rookie Jordan Spieth Choiniere.

The day was beautiful, the golf course was in great shape and the golf was not
bad. There were 25 four person teams in the field.

Team Corvair shot a 64, eight under par. The wining teams in our first flight
had a 58, a 59, a 60 and a 62. The second flight winners had 66s, 67s and a 68.

So if we had been 2 shots better, we would have won some money in the first
flight, or if we had been 2 shots worse, we would have dropped down to second
flight and tied for first.

As Arnold Palmer Huntoon said, "there are just times when it is hard to
understand the game, let alone the scoring system."

Well at least we had fun and no one got hurt. Jordan Spieth Choiniere said he
set a personal record with balls that kept disappearing in the grass, the dirt,
and the prairie dog holes. but as he proudly said, "Never lost one in the
water."

If you are a golfer and want to have a chance to play the base course, just call
me and I can escort you on anytime you can get off work, or whenever I am not
teaching.

Lastly, thanks to my teammates for spending their Saturday with me.

See you on the course.

  -- Sam Snead Wiker

Where's Dave?
David Huntoon

Get ready. It's finally here. The Chama Tri-State is roaring down the tracks and
will be here before you know it. All the effort and planning will culminate at
the end of May. Special thanks to all the volunteers for their efforts and help.
Hopefully everyone has their plans finalized but if you have any questions be
sure to ask them at the next club meeting or check out Larry's website.

A couple of weekends ago we had our first breakfast in Santa Fe. Nice day, nice
place and good food. A nice lineup of Corvairs. I brought a coffee shop friend
and he said he had a great time. Peter lives in Ontario, Canada, and spends his
winters in Mexico. Spends a few weeks with friends here on the way to and from
Mexico. Waiting for the snow and ice to finally clear from his home before he
returns. Can't blame him. An interesting guy who's had some interesting jobs,
including selling Rileys, Austins and Austin-Healeys. Bus driver and stock
trader. Anyhow, thanks for making him feel welcome. Thanks to Tarmo for setting
up the breakfast.

Since May will be a busy month we will likely not have another breakfast until
June. I am thinking about having it in the East Mountains at a spot near my
place. After, drop by my place if interested. Even after 20 years in the club I
think maybe only 5 people know where I live. We can talk about it at the June
meeting to see if there's any interest.

June will be our next Old Route 66 cleanup. We had kind of a minimum turnout at
April's first cleanup of the year and would like to see a few more people in
June. An hour or hour and a half is about all the time it takes, and of course
the more people who help, the less time it will take. After the cleanup there is
usually an informal breakfast where we get to swap tall stories. I enjoy it and
have missed only a handfull of cleanups since we started.

Time to clean and shine those Corvairs and see you at the next meeting, and then
on to Chama.

Thanks, David

April 2, 2014 - Monthly Meeting
Anne Mae Gold

Meeting called to order at 7:04 PM.

Secretary: Our new secretary was announced. She is Anne Mae Gold.

Treasury: Robert Gold reported the current balance is $4,458.03 and there is an
outstanding bill for the dash plaques.

Committee Reports:

Membership: No new members right now, however, Will has a 1966 coupe. He called
Steve and Rita. Contact will be made later. Mark Pringle went to the Gold house
to see the Lakewood wagon and also visited Pat Hall. No purchase yet that we
know of.

Car Council: Robert Gold reported that about half the usual number of people
were in attendance at the March Car Council meeting and the meeting took a total
of only 30 minutes! The state car inspection requirement has been moved back
from April 1st to August. The Car Council website is still down and there was no
word on when or even if it will live again. Steve Gongora said he could add the
car club links to CNM's website if we can get them. The data could all be
emailed to him.

Robert Gold brought some posters for the Museum Car Show. As always, it will be
held May 18. It is the 30th anniversary of this show. At 6:00 PM on April 9
there will be a special meeting for envelope stuffing, pizza will be served. Art
Gold is signed up to count ballots, volunteers can approach them (Joyce et al)
on the day of the show to help out.

Editor: Jim Pittman said the deadline for the newsletter is Friday April 25. He
learned from Steve Gongora that Keith Greg has moved to 809 Arno (just north of
Lomas) where he will do alignments on Corvairs. His number is 553-3789, it's
called Keith's Wheel Alignment. He is also willing to come to the meeting for a
tech talk.

Sunshine: Heula Pittman said that a few more contributions have been brought in.
There are 85 bags and they will not all be the same. If you can get quantities
of pens, decks of cards, notepads, etc. please get them to Heula by the May
meeting.

Steve Gongora reported that Jerry Goffe will be having one of his feet amputated
this month. Today is Michael Stickler's birthday.

Merchandise: Vickie Hall reported no sales this past month. Vickie has free
calendars, free patches, $2 patches, $3 Tri-State patches. The manager of the
T.A. truck stop would like the club to come by and set up another breakfast. The
menu has changed, there is now a $6 breakfast menu. Vickie and Heula have Harbor
Freight coupons for free items. Please help out and pick some up and give the
items to them for the gift bags.

Old Business:

David Huntoon reported that a Facebook Corvairs of New Mexico group is now
active.

Tri-State ads: Larry Yoffee reported that posters are going up around Chama. The
Chama Rotary Club will have little welcome bags with information. The NAPA store
will be donating some door prizes and possibly some items for the registration
bags.

Tri-State Updates: There is a total of 72 people confirmed for the Tri-State: 41
from CNM and 18 from Pike's Peak. Larry has heard from several from other
states. May 1 will be the last day for banquet registration and T-shirt orders.
T-Shirts can be ordered online. There is a nice area to hold a Fan-Belt Toss and
maybe a Horseshoe Toss. The banquet is set and ready to go. The smoker for the
banquet food will be on site.

Volunteers' final meeting: Volunteer roles need to be updated and set
immediately after the May meeting. The Hospitality room should remain open. Some
members will be bringing games such as Scrabble and Checkers. At the next
meeting we will discuss stocking the HR with food.

New Business:

Tarmo Sutt reminded us that tonight was the deadline to turn in Boydston Award
nomination forms. Tarmo had received a few and more were turned in tonight.

Old Route 66 Cleanup: Lube Lubert said that we'll meet at 8:30 am on Saturday
April 5th.

Tarmo told us that our next club breakfast will be at the Santa Fe Bite on
Saturday April 12th. Leave at 9:00am from the Valero gas station on Tramway
across from Sandia Casino and near Bien Mur. Go north on I-25 and exit on the
3rd Santa Fe freeway exit: Old Pecos Trail. Proceed to downtown Santa Fe. It is
in Garrett's Hotel close to the plaza. See page 7 of last month's newsletter for
details.

News Items:

Matt Choiniere told us that the Trinity Site is now only open once a year. It
will be open this Saturday, April 5th starting at 8:00am. Enter through the
Stallion Gate. Go down I-25 to San Antonio and turn east on US 380 then turn
right at the Stallion Gate entrance to White Sands Missile Range.

Steve Gongora has tried to get a columnist (Leslie Linthicum) from the Journal
to write an article about the Corvair's anniversary. It may help if other people
call her to give an extra push.

Valencia county zoning is giving Pat Hall a hard time. He is clearing things
out, but he is anticipating having to go to court. He is asking that the
membership write letters of support in his favor. Send or e-mail your letters to
the Halls.

Steve Gongora told us that the property of the two-story business next to Dave
Langlois has been sold. There may be implications for Dave's business as for
years Dave has been using some of the space to store cars and parts, with the
previous owner's permission.

For the 50/50 drawing: $16.00 dollars total = $8.00 pot went to Mike Stickler.

Meeting adjourned at 8:15pm

Board Meeting, April 16, 2014
Anne Mae Gold

Present were:
Anne Mae Gold, Robert Gold, Heula Pittman, Jim Pittman, Lube Lubert, John Wiker,
Tarmo Sutt, Vickie Hall, Pat Hall, Larry Yoffee, Dave Huntoon.

Start Time: 5:05pm - End Time: 6:33pm

Vickie Hall brought pretty blue Easter cupcakes.

John Wiker complimented Tarmo Sutt for last Saturday's Santa Fe breakfast.

Last meeting's minutes were approved without change.

Vice President: The 2014 Francis Boydston Award: A member has been chosen by the
Awards Committee to receive the award. Some of the people present at this
meeting have been nominated, so the winner will not be discussed at this time.
The plaque will be obtained and will be presented at the Tri-State banquet.

Secretary: Nothing to report.

Treasurer: We have $4,201.13 in the account. Please see the accounting report
for details.

Committee Reports:

Membership: Our new members are Joel Yelich & Valerie Nye from Santa Fe and they
have a 1966 convertible of an interesting color (a shade of green/lime). They
attended the Santa Fe breakfast with application form filled out and check in
hand.

Car Council: Last Wednesday the Council had an envelope stuffing party. The
Museum Car Show is Saturday May 18th. We will meet at 6:45 at the hotel parking
lot at Rio Grande and Bellamah NW just north of Old Town to go into the car show
in a group at 7:00 AM. The Car Council was having problems with insurance for
the car show. Not to worry, they are putting something together with Hagerty,
but the trailer will not be covered.

Editor: Friday April 25 is the newsletter deadline. Terry Price will be
contributing an article about the breakfast. Jim looked into what the Pikes Peak
club has done on Facebook. His granddaughter sent him some screenshots, but he
could not tell much from them. Larry said, you don't have to be a member of
Facebook to look at the club information. Our Facebook page had pictures of the
breakfast almost immediately. Facebook may help us contact new, younger people.
We've recently held two Corvair-only shows; was this a worthwhile thing to do to
muster up membership/interest? Three board members commented that it is
worthwhile.

Jim said that next month, the day he would take the newsletter to the printer,
falls on Memorial Day. Our board meeting is on Wednesday the 21st. Jim will need
to have all articles in by the night of the board meeting (May 21st) so he can
finish the newsletter and get it to the printer by Thursday May 22nd.

Jim would like to mail the July newsletter with the Tri-State report to all who
attend the Tri-State. This would mean extra printing and postage costs for that
mailing. The board agreed that the club will pick up the extra costs for that
mailing.

Sunshine: Heula has already put together a welcome packet for our new members.
John Wiker has already ordered their nametags. Ray Trujillo has contributed some
things for our registration bags. As soon as a final number of families has been
set, Heula would like to know so that she can prepare the correct number of
bags.

In 2003 the Sunshine committee made a First Aid kit to be taken to all the Old
Route 66 cleanups and to the meets. She'd like to have it back so that it can be
updated and then delivered to the Tri-State meet. The printer may also be able
to donate items for the bags.

David Huntoon has ordered the new CNM lapel pins and delivery is expected in
about two weeks. One will be placed in each bag and others will be available for
purchase. The cost of the pins is $3 each, we may want to set a higher price for
purchase.

Merchandise: Vickie had nothing new to report. She showed us a sample of the
centerpieces she is making for the Tri-State. The date for the Tri-State was
misprinted in the Corvair Center Forum. She pinged the person who put the
announcement up and it was corrected right away.

OLD BUSINESS

Old Route 66 Cleanup. Only a skeleton crew showed up for the last cleanup. We
should advertize it more at the upcoming meetings and write an article about it
for the newsletter. Having eight members would be nice. The next cleanup will be
held the first Saturday in June, June 7th. A sign up sheet needs to go around at
the meeting just before the event.

Tri-State: Larry said that on May 22 the Yoffees and Wilverts will meet to
decide on what will be offered in the Hospitality room. Donations will be asked
for after that date. The room will be cleaned up before registration. At
registration there will be two colored tickets for the banquet, one for beef and
one for chicken. Set up for the banquet will be at 1:00 pm at St. Patrick's
church. At this time there are 53 families (about 108 people) pre-registered.
Anne & John Wiker will work registration. Elisa Yoffee will also be there
collecting money, selling posters and merchandise. Registration will be all day
Friday and Saturday morning until noon. Heula and Vickie will be part of the set
up for the banquet. Tarmo will contact the local newspaper and contact Clarks.

On Thursday May 29 Larry will be making sure all things will be set up and in
place. Robert, Pat and Art will set up the car show parking. Pat will set up
games at an adjacent green space. Anne Mae will lead the Tierra Wool tour and
fill in the car show award certificates. Chama Chamber of Commerce will get
whatever any other tour group gets. Larry will pick up those bags on Thursday.
Rose Martinez of the Chamber of Commerce would like to have some time at the
banquet to welcome our group to town.

Tarmo talked about having a "Hard Luck Award" prepared in case we need it.
Usually the award is a broken part awarded to someone who had a mishap in
getting to the Tri-State . Tarmo will work on this.

The next Club Breakfast will be in June (14th or 21st) in Dave Huntoon's
neighborhood in Cedar Crest. This will be discussed later.
The Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and Car Show would also be a good club
activity.

Mention other interesting news items -- then adjourn.

All Quiet on the Automotive Front
March 2014 Car Council Report
Robert Gold

After the explosions generated by the Attorney General's decision to implement a
rigorous car inspection program, I figured the current Car Council meeting would
be super exciting. Alas, that was not the case. When meeting time came around
there weren't many people in the room.

The result was probably the shortest meeting I've attended to date. It was even
shorter than the meeting we were forced to have in the parking lot under a
single spotlight. With that in mind here's what happened.

During the opening introductions we were told that our Treasurer, Louie Paul,
had walking pneumonia. Surprisingly, he actually attended the meeting, but he
was unable to talk above a whisper. That made for a rather mellow treasurer's
report. Louie's spokesperson read a statement that said that there was over
$10,000 in the council's checking account.

In addition we were informed that because we bought a trailer, our insurance
company had dropped us and we are in the process of finding a company that will
have us. I guess you could call that an unintended consequence. The really good
thing was that the IRS did not have anything to do with this problem, so we
probably could find a solution to it.

J.D. reported that the copyright attempt for the logo was now going before the
Zia Pueblo to get their approval. Once this was done the Secretary of State
could then give the final approval.

Now on to the exciting part of the meeting; the report on Gary King's inspection
program. We were told that efforts to negate the bulk of the program were
proceeding quietly in an attempt to resolve the issue with the minimum of
bloodshed. Attorney General King had decided to postpone the implementation of
the rules until August. Why, you might ask, was this done? Simply, this was a
result of the fact that with April 1st approaching the General did not have any
written rules to implement, so this issue will continue on.

We then talked for a short time about the May 18th Museum Car Show. There
wasn't much to report aside from the decision to have an envelope stuffing event
on April 9 at around 6:00. Last year I missed it because I hadn't read the
newsletter. This year I'll miss it because I'll be out of town. Different
reason, same result.

The meeting wound up with announcements of various upcoming events. This
included the All Clubs Picnic, which will be held in the same place as last
year; the Spring Thaw, with inspection spots rapidly filling up; and the Classic
Chevy Show to be held on April 12.

As was mentioned at the meeting, we are entering the peak period for car events.
Activities will be going on just about every weekend. I'll be forwarding
information to you by email as I receive the announcements.

With that, the meeting was adjourned, 8:00pm.

ROGER PAPE --- 1943 - 2014

Roger Pape joined CNM in December 2002 and for years drove up from Bosque Farms
to attend meetings and club activities. Recently he brought his beautiful green
1971 Corvette to a club breakfast for all to see. Roger died on April 22, 2014.

We didn't know that Roger was born near Doniphan, Nebraska and grew up on a
farm. After college he worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, taught
accounting at a business school and was the leader of a successful dance band
that grew into a popular country western band named Pure Intensity, well known
in Nebraska and beyond. He became a safety engineer and decided to move to New
Mexico to be closer to his children. He was a Cornhusker at heart and proudly
wore red during football games. Roger loved cars, especially 1971 Corvettes and
Corvairs. He enjoyed racing stock cars with his son, working night after night
to prepare for races. Roger was a quiet and unassuming member of CNM, regularly
attended meetings and activities. We will miss him.

First Old Route 66 Cleanup of the Year

We started at 8:30 AM on Saturday April 5th. It was windy but not hurricane
force. The plastic bags loved the wind. There was no mud to be seen anywhere.
Often losing one's grip on a pice of trash resulted in its being transported to
someone else's cleanup zone. The sign at the east end of our mile was
(temporarily?) removed for road work of some kind. We filled approximately 9
plastic trash bags. The amount of trash was somewhat below expectations and we
were done well before noon.

Workers:
* Lube Lubert
* Robert Gold
* Javi Gold
* Pat Hall
* David Huntoon
* Jim Pittman

At the Golden Corral parking lot:

* Lube's primer-on-white early sedan
* Pat's used-to-be-gold late coupe

Saturday, the 19th of April, Larry Blair and I represented our club at the
year's first Make A Wish car show sponsored by California Pastrami at the corner
of San Pedro and Montgomery. A total of 10 cars showed up. There were 7 Camaros
from their club, our two Corvairs and a 1968 Pontiac GTO. People would come by
and vote for their favorite car for a dollar a vote. They also had T-shirts for
$10.00 each. You could also buy ice cream cones for $2.00 a scoop. All money
collected went to Make A Wish. Larry and I made sure the Ice Cream fund was well
taken care of -- at least 3 scoops each.

We had plenty of visitors from 1:00 to 5:00 and at the end of the event, three
trophies were presented. First place went to the 45th Anniversary Camaro with
all kinds of electronics and clam doors and a 600 horsepower engine. Second
place went to the GTO that looked like it came off the showroom floor. Third
went to a 1969 Camaro that showed up late and had to be asked to join us because
the owner said she had not prepared it for the show and only stopped by to see
what was going on. She had the same paint scheme and interior as my car, but her
engine was spotless and put mine to shame.

She beat me out by one vote, but I felt good because the DJ Bobby Box from 98.5
FM oldies station had his publicist take a picture of him in my car for future
use as he had owned one himself in an "earlier life" -- hasn't everyone? The
weather looked threatening, but after one very small sprinkle, it never rained
again till I was safely in my garage at home. I had a good time and contributed
to a very worthy cause.

Brakes on 1965 Convertible
Joel Yelich

Hello Russ, Tarmo and Larry, here's an update on my brakes. It might be
something for the newsletter. Thanks, Joel

Hello All, Here's an update on Saturday afternoon's slow trip home after the
breakfast in Santa Fe.

I could tell there was a little drag in the brakes after we stopped at
Albertson's for groceries. The driver's rear totally locked as I was testing in
the parking lock. I tried to get the drum unlocked by going in reverse and
possibly having the adjuster unlock it a bit. Sometimes that backfires and I
wasn't sure how the Corvair's adjuster worked. Going backwards did work and I
was rolling free again forward. The brakes themselves were working fine with
hard pedal and no metal on metal sounds. The parking brake seemed to work fine
as well.

Val and I slowly made our way down Rabbit Road which is the back way home to
Highway 14. Eventually the leading shoe wanted to drag and pop free every so
often. The first time was quite loud. We stopped and debated pulling the drum on
the side of the road, but the jack was too unstable on the soft ground. We made
it home more slowly than usual. The rim was hot to the touch at that time.

I just got a chance in the past day to pull the drum. I've seen worse. It only
took a few taps of the hammer to get the drum free as is somewhat normal. It's
not advised to breathe much at that point in the process of course. The linings
separated completely from the shoes after I removed the drum. Did they break
free from age with the added heat? It's hard to say how old these are, but not
super old or they probably wouldn't have been bonded. I'll probably order wheel
cylinders, shoes and a spring kit. The drum is not badly scored or thin,
although I might replace both. I guess riveted linings might have kept us from
going anywhere or could have heated things up a lot more. I originally thought
it was just the parking brake sticking, but I now suspect the left piston of the
wheel cylinder is maybe seizing (see image). Wheel cylinders often leak with
age. I see no evidence of leakage.

I now have a longer list of items to take with the car on even a small trip.

Best Regards, Joel

ONLY THE LONELY
April Route 66 Cleanup
Robert Gold

For any of you who have known me for any amount of tine you will know that
baseball is very important to me. I even met my wonderful wife, Anne Mae, at the
old Dukes ballpark. Though I do not have many baseball skills I always enjoyed
watching those with abilities play the game. Anyway, as the Major League season
winds down those statistical folks assign a number called the "magic number" to
describe how close the leading team is to winning the championship. For example
the magic number 8 means any combination of the first place team's wins plus the
number of losses by the second place team's that adds up to 8 results in a
championship for the leading team.

The number 8 also is a magic number for our Route 66 cleanup. If we get that
number of volunteers we are assured of two things: 1. Pat Hall won't be lonely
as he picks up the trash and 2. We'll have enough volunteers to insure that the
pickup will be completed quickly and we can get to the Golden Corral before
breakfast ends.

Alas, our last cleanup effort in April did not achieve that "magic number", so
Pat Hall had to work alone and we were almost last for the breakfast. I never
thought that asking to have 8 CNM'ers join in an effort that makes our
environment nicer and plugs us into the history of the "Mother Road" would be
hard to do.

So CNM'ers let's show our support of the environment, support of our car club,
and most of all support for Lube Lubert's efforts to organize this event. Put
the next cleanup date, Saturday, June 7 at 0800 on your calendar and we'll make
the next cleanup a "magic" one! -- Robert Gold

CASH GIVEAWAY AT THE ALBUQUERQUE MUSEUM!
Robert Gold

Now that I have your attention I'd like to tell you about the upcoming Car
Council Museum Car Show which will be taking place on Sunday, MAY 18. The show
will be held at the Albuquerque Museum in Old Town, 2000 Mountain Road NW in the
parking lot directly in front of the museum.

For any of you who might have forgotten, this car show is a unique chance to see
many cars that spend most of their time hiding in garages all around
Albuquerque. An odd Corvair or two that you haven't seen before might also make
an appearance. In addition to the cars, I know that my family really enjoys a
breakfast at Garcia's on Central and then an extended shopping trip into Old
Town, which is right next door to the museum. If shopping doesn't do it for you,
a small donation will get you into the air conditioned comfort of the
Albuquerque Museum. This year on temporary exhibit is a collection called,
"Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898." I know my
Spanish-born bride, Anne Mae will be interested in this! Also there is an
exhibit titled "Everybody's neighbor, Vivan Vance" (You know, Ethel Mertz from
"I Love Lucy"). All these things will insure you'll have lots to do during the
show.

So meet us at the north parking lot of the Hotel Albuquerque at 800 Rio Grande
Blvd NW at 6:45 am and we'll enter the show around 7:00. The entry fee of $10 (a
bargain) will be collected by friendly car guys as you enter the museum parking
lot. We'll then set up in a group and have a wonderful time. Things begin to
break up after 2:00.

Oh yes, I forgot one thing. If you want a free lunch paid for by the Car Council
you can join Art Gold (and others) and count ballots inside the museum. The
luncheon will be held at a later date. In the past it's been a pizza party in
Corrales. Let me know at the show if you want to do this.

I look forward to seeing you on the 18th!!!

TREK TO THE CITY DIFFERENT
Terry Price

It's been about eight years since my wife Sarah and I have attended a CNM event.
Sarah does not care much about breakfast and is not a car enthusiast, Corvairs
are not high on her list of autos to be excited about, but I was able to bribe
her with the mention of a walk around Santa Fe Plaza. So, a breakfast trek to
Santa Fe on Saturday, April 12 was a go.

Six Corvairs, a FC, a convertible, four coupes and one Brand X were waiting at
the Valero gas station, across from Sandia Casino in Albuquerque, when we
arrived around 8:40 that morning. In spite of a cool breeze, drivers and their
guest were gathered around talking about, what else, their Corvairs. Around nine
the caravan started out, all following a red and white Rampside of all things.
So, off we were! I was surprised that Steve Gongora was able to get that
Rampside over fifty but he had no issues, getting up to seventy-five and easily
making it up La Bajada Hill and on into Santa Fe, arriving at 10:02. Tarmo
pulled up right behind us with his 1966 red Corsa turbo convertible and a friend
followed him with his 1965 green Corsa coupe. A couple in a green convertible
also arrived from Espanola. They were Valerie & Joel Yelich and they became new
CNM members at the breakfast. I was looking at Tarmo's car and he said, "Let me
show you the BIG engine" as he opened the lid.

After a bit of chatting and trading old car stories everyone proceeded into the
Santa Fe Bite for some GREAT food. A super place for breakfast, uh -- lunch, uh
maybe brunch. Some had the fantastic Green Chile Cheese burgers, some had
Quesadillas and some had the BIG BITE, a 16 oz burger. Whatever, the green and
the red chile were terrific. About 30 members and their guests filled the room
with laughter and noise until the fabulous food was set before them -- then
silence, well maybe a little slurping. A wonderful time.

Most diners returned to the parking lot after dinner for more Corvair talk.
Sarah and I took a walk down to the Plaza. On the way we noticed a light rain
which did not last long; I don't think the ground got wet. After the Plaza visit
we returned to the parking lot where some were still chatting. We said goodbye
and headed home. A very successful and fun trip for all who attended.

Editor's Note: Above we see Terry Price in a former life. He has been a CNM
member before! At an Albuquerque Museum car show on May 16th, 2004 he posed
proudly in front of a Monza coupe. Thanks to LeRoy Rogers for this photo.

SEVEN YEARS AGO IN MAY

2007 - Vol. 33
Nr. 5 - # 380

On the cover we find two Corvairs in Carey Hubbard's workshop in process of
being restored. Inside, three Corvairs are seen at the April meeting at Galles
Chevrolet, one a rusty but rare 1969 convertible. We planned a group attendance
at an Isotopes ball game. That's BASEBALL for any who don't know. President Ray
told us about an Easter adventure he had about thirty years ago that featured
melted chocolate Easter bunnies. Ask him about it. Steve Goodman previewed the
PPCC-sponsored Tri-State in Monte Vista, CO. Robert Gold reported on the Car
Council and previewed the Spring Thaw (get your classic car serviced almost for
free) and the Museum car show. Cary told about adding air conditioning to an
early model. Heula reported on the club's April breakfast and TUNA and a series
of photos by Jim gave some idea of the "mechanicking fun" we all had. Maybe some
of us left the TUNA with our cars running much better!

2000 - Vol. 26
Nr. 5 - # 296

The four-part cover features photos Steve Gongora made on a club trip to El Paso
to see the War Eagles Museum. There was an RF-84F Thunderjet, a P-40 Tigershark,
a collection of old Corvairs, and a Corsa coupe under the shade of pecan trees
near Las Cruces. Our meeting was held at Galles Chevrolet. Meeting minutes were
full of plans for the April trip down south, the Museum car show, the Tri-State,
a camping trip and other summer activities.

Elizabeth Domzalski reported on the trip to Las Cruces and El Paso and a fine
trip it was. Thanks, Steve, for the great photos. Finally, a tech tip entitled
"Tail Light Ghost" by Dale & Marilynn Dewald Hancock was reprinted from Virtual
Vairs. The "ghost" part referred, no doubt, to the awesome complexity of the
electrical circuits controlling brake and turn signals. There are plenty of
mechanical parts to go awry without having to worry about ghosts.

1993 - Vol. 19
Nr. 5 - # 212

The cover was another Morgan fantasy. Secretary Chuck ran the meeting because
Del and Bob were both absent. Treasurer Will reported a bank balance of $1,381.
LeRoy previewed the May Museum car show. We ordered Club jackets. Seth Emerson
sent the Club a letter asking for a bid to host a CORSA convention and we agreed
to consider it. Bill Reider told us about the Milestone Car Society.

A topical story in 2014: Tarmo told us about cars in Santa Fe that were
confiscated and crushed because the owner violated city zoning laws. The owner
considered his cars to be a collection, the city did not, the city won. Bill
McClellan reminded us that Casa Chevrolet was paying for our newsletter printing
and mailing. Answers to last month's crossword were given. Larry Blair told us
how to repair loose rivets on your early glove box door. Test an alternator by
hooking it to the car's wiring, then spin with an electric drill. Mike Dawson
discussed chemical helpers and how they work.

1986 - Vol. 12
Nr. 5 - # 128

The cover showed several Corvair owners at a football field waiting for a hot
air balloon to show up. We had parked several Corvairs on the field, so arranged
to spell out "Corsa" for an aerial photo. The balloon couldn't fly because of
the wind, so no aerial photo. The treasury stood at $756. We planned car shows,
a Tri-State meet, a flea market outing, a comet watch at Bill Hector's and a
trip to Los Alamos to see a stock of Corvair parts that had to go.

Carl Johnson's tech tips were how to keep those pesky leaves out of your air
ducts and how parts cleaning solvents were toxic and could lead to joint
problems. Karen Jackson reported on a Corvair event in Phoenix attended by a few
New Mexico members.

1979 - Vol. 5
Nr. 5 - # 44

Two Rochester HV carbs were depicted on the cover. Secretary Les Campbell was
moving to Connecticut. Ike Meissner's tech tip told how to clean grungy parts
with a tub of hot water and laundry detergent. Some technical details from
George Brazil's talk on his super Spyder were included. Frank McKenna warned
about using too much silicone sealer lest globs should get loose and clog oil
passages. Francis described a spring attached to the right-hand carb linkage to
help compensate for linkage slop and thus keep a steady idle. The editor asked
if anyone had driven any of the new crop of small front-wheel-drive cars and if
so would they write an article comparing their handling with that of our
Corvairs.
