MECHANICALLY UN-INCLINED
Ray Trujillo

Hello everyone!

The Montrose Tri-State event was a great success. Reports from our CNM members
are that they all had a real good time. Thank you to the Pikes Peak Corvair Club
for all their efforts in putting together a awesome weekend. I heard that Ed
Halpin was the winner of the Boydston Award. Congratulations to Ed on the well
deserved recognition. I understand that the attendance award went to the Pikes
Peak Corvair club, so congratulations to PPCC. Terry Price, our Tri-State
chairperson, made the announcement that we will hold next year's event in Taos.
The countdown to Taos officially begins for us now, so please talk to Terry
about volunteering some of your time and helping CNM on next year's Tri-State.

Let's talk about CNM's upcoming schedule. On the Fourth of July there's a Car
Show on the Plaza in Santa Fe starting at about 7:00 AM. Tarmo Sutt usually
represents CNM in this event and I'm sure he wouldn't mind having other CNM
members attend with him. There is a pancake breakfast while your car is being
admired by the many people who come to this Santa Fe festival. On the following
Saturday July 9th, CNM will have a breakfast at 10:00 AM at the Central Grill
and Coffee Restaurant located at 2056 Central SW. That's near the corner of Rio
Grande and Central SW. This restaurant has some really delicious homemade
breakfast and lunch items as a few of us can attest from our visit during the
Albuquerque Museum car show. The Grill has a good size parking lot and in
addition to indoor seating it has a really nice outdoor area for a summertime
breakfast next to old Route 66. So shine up your Corvair and come out for a nice
breakfast and show off your classic while visiting with your CNM friends. Up
next on June 12-16, the Corsa International Convention will be held in
Springfield, Illinois. If you're planning on going please read the latest
Communiques for all the details. Then on August 14th, NMCCC will hold its annual
summer picnic at Oak Flat picnic area on South 14 in Tijeras. Next, we are
planning to go to an Isotopes baseball game. The date is August 20 and the cost
is $10.50 per ticket. This really is a great group rate deal and we need at
least 20 people to get this price. If you'd like to go please sign up at the
next meeting.

You know going to an Isotopes baseball game, oops sorry, I mean a Dukes game,
always brings back many wonderful childhood memories. As many of you know
"Isotopes" is the more recent name given to our city's baseball team but during
my younger days the team name was the more appropriate and symbolic "Dukes." My
dad who recently passed away used to take me and my family to a least a couple
of Dukes games a year. He loved everything about baseball and he taught me how
to play and he knew the strategy of the game as well. Most people get the
obvious joys of just being at a beautifully manicured ballpark and all the great
sounds and mouthwatering aromas that go along with the experience. To many
people, the game is slow and boring, but if you were lucky enough to have a dad
who took the time to teach you the cat and mouse maneuvering that was going on
between each pitch then you'd better appreciate and understand this truly great
game. As a spectator it's a game in which you can sit next to someone and have
an involved conversation about anything else other than the ongoing game and
still follow what's happening in the tactical and deliberate contest. I guess
that's one of the reasons why it's called America's great pastime. Thanks Dad
for giving me the love of baseball.

Moving on... last month CNM finally got to hold its first Old Route 66 cleanup
of 2016. Our first cleanup was rained out so on June 11th we had seven members
come and clean our assigned mile. It took us about an hour. Thanks to Lube
Lubert, Larry Blair, Robert Gold, Dave Huntoon, Jim Pittman, John Wiker and
yours truly for volunteering for the cleanup.

Well I guess that's enough said for now, so I hope to see you at the next club
meeting. -- Ray

cleaning up our mile of Old Route 66 this year. Lube will send a letter about
the upcoming cleanup on June 11th.

The 50/50 totaled $15, Steve Gongora won, and he gave his $7.50 to the treasurer
for the club. Thanks, Steve!

We adjourned and several members left to meet again at Jason's Deli.

Tech talk by Larry Blair and Terry Price concerning carburetors, carb linkage
and staked seats in cylinder heads.

THANKS
Vickie Hall

Oh my gosh! We forgot to thank everyone who came to our Southern home, in
San Antonio, for the April 30th BBQ and pot luck. We are going to blame
our forgetfulness on "old age".

We had a showing of 13 CNM members and 3 family members. We especially want to
thank Curtis Shimp from Silver City, Dave Huntoon from Cedar Crest and Tarmo
Sutt from Santa Fe for driving a great distance for CNM's get together.

One last note of importance. On the sign up sheet under Drive a Corvair or not,
Andrew Sanchez, son of Victor and Belinda, checked no - "not yet" so it sure
looks to us like CNM will have a new member in the near future.

Thanks again to everyone.

Pat and Vickie Hall

A NIGHT AT THE 'TOPES! -- SATURDAY, AUGUST 20
Robert Gold

After a number of years, CNM will return to Isotopes Park for a night of
baseball and food! By popular demand I am organizing a group night out for the
club. All it will take is a total of 20 baseball fans to qualify for the low,
low price of $10.50 for each reserved seat. The game begins at 7:05.

To make this happen I need for you to:
	1. Contact me with the number of tickets you need, and
	2. For you to PAY for the tickets.

I'll be at the July club meeting to collect for the tickets. If you can't make
the meeting simply send me a check. Send it to:
	Robert Gold, CNM Treasurer
1301 Valencia Dr NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110

I can't wait for you to join me for a night of fun on August 20!

MISERY LOVES COMPANY -- JUNE CAR COUNCIL REPORT
Robert Gold

As I write this report the citizens of our fair city are experiencing quite a
heat wave with temps reaching above 100. That said, when I entered the Old Car
Garage, I found no relief from the heat. The place actually seemed hotter than
the outside. Though we pay for the meeting room, I guess the cost doesn't
include any cooling!

With that in mind, imagine a room full of people frantically stuffing 1,300
envelopes with flyers for the September Swap Meet. However, there were three
bright spots about the experience: (1) John Wiker was there to share in the fun,
(2) I got to hang out with lots of "cool" car guys, and (3) when we were done
there was free pizza! All in all this wasn't a bad deal.

After stuffing the envelopes AND ourselves, we held a short business meeting.
There was no Treasurer's report because the treasurer wasn't there. I assume we
still have lots of money.

Joyce Clements told us that though attendance was down for the Museum Car Show,
so were expenses, so there was money left over to finance the Volunteer Luncheon
that will take place on July 24 in Corrales. We then were told that the NM
Challenger Club and the Drifters Car Club will be organizing the August 14
Council Picnic. Dry conditions in the mountains may affect the event. We'll have
to wait and see.

With these reports out of the way, we turned to the two most important parts of
the meeting. One was the counting of ballots for Council officers. I'm pleased
to report that I'm now Vice President of the Council, serving under Jamie
Saavedra of the GTO Club, who is the new President. Since my only job is to sub
for the President I hope Jame is able to be at all the organization's meetings
and events. I have my fingers crossed.

The second thing was a highly charged talk about the ART development project
along Central. Elizabeth Vencill, the lawyer wife of our State Fair friend,
Craig, made a strong case for stopping this project. She pointed out
misinformation about the project being put out by the City as well as the
prediction that ART will badly disrupt much of Central. The Council reps decided
to unofficially support a July 2 protest cruise down Central. I've already
forwarded a flyer to the club membership. If you need more info let me know.

With that the meeting mercifully ended. I'm thinking of bringing a fan next
month.

I LOVE THE EMISSIONS PROGRAM
Robert Gold

First I need to qualify what you just read. I wouldn't want you to believe I've
totally gone off the deep end and learned to love Bernalillo County's emission
testing program. What created the warm glow I got from the program was how I was
treated at the City Emissions Testing Facility on Broadway NE. This is the place
where you can go for free retests if your car failed the first time.

The vehicle I was struggling with has meaning to our Club. It is the 1985 El
Camino that many of you remember Sylvan Zuercher driving for forever. The car
ultimately passed to my son Javi to use at Sandia High and UNM. The result is a
rather tired looking vehicle with a check engine light lit on the dash. I gave
Javi my beloved red 2002 Honda Civic and took back the El Camino.

Well, before deciding the fate of the El Camino I decided to dig though the
emissions testing program and find out where I stood. I needed to find out if
fixing the icon was going beyond my means and interest. That's where the City
emissions folks come in. I found out that they will do a free emissions check if
you allow your car to be used in their training program. You first need to make
an appointment, which, through ignorance, I didn't make. Here's where the
niceness comes in. The testing supervisor allowed me in, in spite of my not
having an appointment. It seems they actually like older cars for training,
since they don't see too many classics at the facility.

The facility seems to be well designed and staffed. They were really friendly
and had an area for me to hang out while they gave the El Camino a going over.
All these guys were nice! I now know where the nice City employees hang out. I
assure you they are not to be found in the parking ticket department... but
that's another story.

So how did this all turn out? The El Camino FAILED badly. I even heard a whistle
or two as they checked out the results. I think I took it well, but I still
didn't know if it was fixable. Up stepped a senior employee who gave me a lesson
in quadrajet carbs. By the time he was done I was convinced that I could fix the
problem without mortgaging my house.

In the end, I now know what needs to be done and about how much it will cost. I
know this stuff because of those nice guys on Broadway NE. All I need to do is
get the carb fixed and this story will have its happy ending. It's going to a
shop that specializes in emissions issues: Skinner Automotive. With luck
Sylvan's El Camino will ride again.-- Robert Gold

EARLY FATHER'S DAY CAR SHOW
John Wiker

On Wednesday the 15th, I received an E-mail from the NMCC that announced an
opportunity at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Community Center to show off
cars during their Father's Day luncheon celebration on Friday the 17th.

JD said that he would buy lunch for anyone who would bring their car to show
from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Being someone who does not pass up the chance for free
food, I dusted off the "BumbleBee" and joined 29 others for free food.

I was the only air breather there and did not hear many typical Corvair stories
from the patrons. I did meet one gentleman whose neighbor owned a red Corvair
and he asked me for some info to share with his neighbor. I gave him the info
and the business card we have. We will see if it leads to something.

After the show I ate lunch. I had enchiladas, fried rice, refried beans,
watermelon and soft-served ice cream. Not bad for a show that cost nothing, and
there was no judging.

It was great to see Su and Ron back in the car show circuit after their car
accident. She now does not need oxygen except at night and even the smoke in the
air from the Dogs Head fire did not seem to bother her.

Well, another opportunity completed for the club. There may be photos for the
newsletter.

2016 COVAIR TRI-STATE - MONTROSE, COLORADO
Terry Price

On June 3rd at 7:45 in the morning, three Corvairs and two Brand X's left
Albuquerque for the Tri-State in Montrose, Colorado. Steve & Rita in their white
1966 Corsa coupe led the way, followed by Pat & Vickie in their red 1964
convertible and Lube & brother Bill in the Great White Hope. Emily with her
husband and children and I followed in our Brand X's. We stopped in Bloomfield
for lunch at a local cafe and brief rest, then were on our way again to Durango,
stopping for gas, and then through Silverton heading toward Ouray. We had a
slight delay a little before Ouray due to road construction, about 15 minutes,
then on to Montrose, arriving at 6:15 in the evening. A long but beautiful trip.

The drive was so picturesque with fields of yellow flowers, waterfalls down the
side of the cliffs, snowcapped peaks, bubbling mountain streams, tall pines and
white-barked aspen. The drive was beautiful, but after 10-1/2 hours, the Holiday
Inn Express was a welcome sight.

It was great to see New Mexico members Tarmo Sutt and Mark Domzalski greeting
people at the entry and talking about Corvairs and old times. Check-in was
extremely smooth, taking just moments, as all we had to do was give our name and
be checked off the pre-registration list. The next step was to pick up the car
entry form for the Show-and-Shine. The raffle items were on display behind the
registration desk and tickets could be purchased for all raffle items, the
quilt, the fifty/fifty and various other items. Check-in at the hotel and
registration for Tri-State probably were done in less than 10 minutes. After
check-in, I walked out to the side parking lot, set aside for all the Corvairs,
to meet with other Tri-State participants and say hellos. Lots of talk and
stories about, what else, Corvairs.

After talking a while, a number of us decided it was time to get some dinner.
About thirteen of us met on the patio at the Horsefly restaurant, (yes
horsefly), to have some great grub. They served BBQ, burgers, fries, mac and
cheese, onion rings, fried pickles, ribs, prairie oysters, (yes prairie
oysters), and other great food and their own brewed beers. There was lots of
talking and joking on the outside patio. After getting our fill of french fries,
onion rings and burgers we finally headed back to the hotel around ten in the
evening.

Those participating in the Show-and-Shine had to be up and in the parking lot by
7:00 am. I did not have a car to show, but I rolled out of bed and stumbled down
to the parking lot to see what was going on. Rows of Corvairs were getting wiped
down and polished, windshields cleaned and engines warmed to make ready for the
show. Excitement was in the air as Corvair owners added the last touches to
their entries.

At 8:00 the caravan started to the Montrose Rotary Club park and picnic grounds
to line up for the Black Canyon Auto Show, of which the Corvairs were the main
event. Around a hundred rods and classic cars were joined by 46 Corvairs. The
grass covered park was only a few blocks away from the hotel and was a perfect
place for the event. It was a pleasant surprise to see that plenty of space had
been allowed for the cars to be displayed. Cars were placed about ten to twelve
feet from each other, allowing plenty of room to show off each car. The weather
was great, low 80s, sunshine and a mild breeze. The cars looked terrific and the
show was accompanied by various other activities.

The Pikes Peak club had set up the track for Valve Cover races, I think there
were six or seven participants. The Push Rod Drop and Fan Belt Toss games drew
good participation. I believe my score on the push rod drop was a minus 14,
didn't try the fan belt toss. Large shade tents and seating were provided for
all, bottles of water were available, two for a dollar, and food trucks provided
some nourishment. A DJ played music and announced raffle ticket numbers. There
was a fire truck - an entry in the car show - that sounded its siren every now
and then. The event was over at 12:00 noon, allowing a chance for free time
before the evening banquet.

There were a number of places to visit. Mountain View Winery made a special
Corvair label for our event. Rocking With Cheese had artisan cheeses and
homemade ice cream, and Day Spring Farms had lavender, oils and soaps. One
popular place to visit was the Russel Stover candy store. Russel Stover has four
production plants in the US, and one of them is in Montrose. As I walked through
the front door I was amazed to be standing in front of a candy counter about
fifty feet long. This was just the front of the mammoth store which was full of
all types of candy produced by the candy maker. Pez, Jelly Belly's, Salt Water
Taffy, and Whitman's chocolates are all made at the Russel Stover Factory. I saw
a number of Corvair enthusiasts there. (It was rumored that the Gongoras made
several trips to the chocolate shop. Not confirmed.) I headed back to the hotel
for some rest, and then proceeded to the hospitality hour and banquet.

The banquet was well attended, about 140 people were present. Centerpieces were
made from blue and green wine bottles that had a hole drilled through the bottom
and lights in them. They were set on cutout felt leaves. The assemblies made a
nice presentation. I was happy to see several NM Club members there. Steve &
Rita Gongora, John & Debra Anderson, Pat & Vickie Hall, Hurley & Brenda Wilvert,
Lube Lubert and his brother Bill, Curtis Shimp, LeRoy & Emma Rogers, Larry &
Kathy Blair, Mark & Elizabeth Domzalski, Ed & Cheryl Halpin, Emily
Gongora-Versce and family. Numerous raffle items were awarded. A beautiful quilt
based on the American flag was won by Steve Gongora and certificates were given
for the various car show winners.

Steve Goodman did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies and Mark Domzalski
presented a talk on the Boydston award. The banquet was adjourned around 9:30,
and the show was over.

The next morning it was back to Albuquerque. Pat, Lube and I took a southern
route by Telluride and through Farmington. It took about the same amount time as
it did coming up but we had no road construction delays.

WOW! What a great and outstanding job Christine Kimberly and the Pikes Peak
Corvair Club did on this retreat! Congratulations on a wonderful event.

SOME NOTES ON THE TRI-STATE
Vickie Hall

At The Banquet:

There was a playing card, turned face down, on all of the tables. We were asked
to turn the card over and the table with the highest number got to get their
food first. I turned over an Ace! Yea, no standing in a long line.

Mark Domzalski gave a brief talk about Francis Boydston and the Boydston Award.
This year's Award was given to Ed Halpin.

The best late model Corvair was Ed Halpin's car and the best Corvair power was
Steve Goodman's Kit Car.

The 50/50 was about $700.00 but I don't know who won.

One door prize was won by Vickie Hall. A 110 license plate with a Clark's coffee
cup. Pat Hall won a 1:18 scale, 1963 model Corvair with his raffle ticket. Steve
Gongora won a fan belt.

The quilt was of an American Flag, waving, and was won by Steve Gongora.
Congratulations!

The Attendance Award was given to the Pikes Peak Corvair Club. There were 62
families which is 50% of their membership.

I was told that there were 124 members in attendance and 42 Corvairs.

Travel Award:

This was given to a gentleman from Wyoming but, sorry, I can't remember his
name. This was also his first Tri-State.

Hard Luck Story:

A Corvair owner's axle broke and Lube Lubert just happened to have an extra one
which he gave to the owner, at no charge. What a great thing to do. Pat Hall
provided a fuel pump for a Corvair owner. CNM has great members.

Towards the end of the banquet, it was announced that Patricia Fox is retiring.

The last item on the agenda:

We were told that there was a sticker on the side of two chairs at every table.
Whoever's chair had the stickers was welcomed to take the table decorations
which were two colored wine bottles with battery operated mini lights inside.
The label on the bottle was PPCC's logo. LeRoy Rogers got one but didn't want it
so he gave it to Lube Lubert. Pat Hall got the other one from our table.

Overall everything went very well and I was really impressed how smoothly the
registration went.

TRI-STATE IN TAOS 2017
Terry Price

After attending the Tri-State in Montrose, my excitement for the event was
renewed and I picked up a number of ideas for CNM's 2017 event. I had a great
time, was able to enjoy the fellowship with other Corvair enthusiasts, and
unlike one past Tri-State I attended, I didn't get shot [smile]

Our 2017 Tri-State will be in Taos, June 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Taos should be a
wonderful place to hold our event. The weather should be great, warm in the
daytime, (in the mid 70s), cool at night, (in the 50s - perfect for a bonfire),
and lots of attention from the locals. That interest will be further aroused by
our Taos Police-escorted parade through town, and the location for the Show and
Shine on the main street in Taos. There are a number of places of interest in
and around Taos, including Art Galleries, Rio Grande Gorge, Taos Pueblo, Greater
Earthship Biotecture Structure, good restaurants and other attractions.

All events will be held at the Kachina Lodge, our host hotel, which has
demonstrated great interest in helping us have a successful event. The Tri-State
has been included on their web site so people in Taos and all over the country
will be informed of our event. They are hosting a "Welcome Hour" on Friday
evening with snacks and drinks, partitioning off the entire front parking lot
for our Show and Shine, and making the whole place available for us, including
offering a hot breakfast each morning for all staying there. In addition, they
are providing a free shuttle to any place within 3 miles of the lodge. They have
provided two stalls to wash our cars, so no excuses for anything but the best
for the car show. Saturday evening we will have our Awards Banquet in their
large dining room. The swimming pool and patio have been renovated, the pool is
the largest in Taos. It would be a great place for the whole family including
children and grandchildren, so work to get your whole family there. They have
even extended their special rates for us to 3 days before the event and 3 days
after! Don't forget the excellent fishing in the area and the historic area all
around Taos.

Here is information:

Kachina Lodge,
413 Paseo del Pueblo Norte,
Taos, NM 87571.

Phone numbers are
575-758-2275 or Toll Free 1-800-522-4462.

Room Rates are $99.95 and $89.95 per night. There are a limited number of rooms
reserved. You can make your reservation today. Don't forget to mention you are
with the "Corvair 2017 Tri-State" for the special rates.

SEVEN YEARS AGO [ JULY 2016 Vol 42 Nr 7 Issue 490 ] Jim Pittman

2009 Vol 35 Nr 7 # 406

The cover featured Pat Hall and an early convertible. Robert reported $6,011 in
the bank. Much of the issue was devoted to the Taos Tri-State. John Wiker wrote
about dealing with a Hollywood film event, more trouble than it was worth. Larry
Blair told about having to replace a frayed clutch cable.

2002 Vol 28 Nr 7 # 322

Your editor read about the Mazda MX-5 Miata in 1989, drove one in 1990, and
bought one in 2002 just to put on our cover. New members this month were Leslie
& Kevin Sullivan. They own an Ultra Van. Robert Gold called our meeting to order
at Galles Chevrolet. Wendell gave our bank balance as $5,048. Mark Martinek said
the Car Council mostly focused on the big car show in Los Lunas. We learned of a
story about Wendy that appeared in the Rio Rancho newspaper. Mark Domzalski was
no longer on CORSA's board of directors. We planned a weekend trip to Ruth's
cabin in the Pecos. The CORSA convention was set for Flagstaff. The Board talked
about a caravan to Flagstaff and programs at future meetings. Roberts
presidential column told of hitching a ride to Ruth's cabin in Wendy's red
Pantera. He asked members to send in their stories of "Corvair Catastrophes" or
at least, interesting mishaps that would liven up the newsletter. Anne Mae let
us know that the Corvair Ladies group was still active. Finally, four pages told
everything you could possibly want to know about your editor's progress from a
1952 Ford into the world of sports cars. The 1966 turbocharged Corsa was one of
those sports cars.

1995 Vol 21 Nr 7 # 238

The cover showed a patriotic 13-star flag, made of Monza emblems and
Greenbriers. President Larry ran our meeting. Treasurer Will reported $1,296 in
the bank. Bill reported on Car Council activities. We had new Clarks catalogs.
Jerry said those who went to the Red River Tri-State missed a great Albuquerque
Museum Car Show. Corvair belt buckles were on order. Larry reported that, with
wheels removed from one of his Corvairs, he was busted by the city for having a
"junker" in his yard. Cars in the front must be in running condition! Billiken
and Bill the Cat drove 27 hours to New Mexico. We had several tech tips from
other clubs: Fuel Pumps, No Oil Pressure, Emergency Brake Cable Removal, No Fuel
or Spark, Water Hose for Corvairs, Pitfalls of O-Rings. An article from an Iowa
CORSA member told about working in an aluminum foundry in the 1960's, casting
Corvair engine parts.

1988 Vol 14 Nr 7 # 154

The cover showed a 1965 sedan. We had $596 in the bank. The museum car show was
nice and Larry's green 1964 convertible Spyder took first place. Jerry showed a
video of the trip to the Tri-State at Canon City. Tom Martin reported on the
Tri-State. LeRoy planned an auction for July. Sylvan announced he would be
putting on an Econo/fun Run to Las Vegas.

1981 Vol 7 Nr 7 # 70

The CNM dragon led a Fourth of July parade in a Corvair convertible. We had a
meeting under the stars at Ed Black's. LeRoy reported on a recent car show, a
recent auction, and a recent Los Alamos slalom. Robin DeVore told us about TRW
lifters that are just a smidge too long. You could set your valve lash two turns
past zero to compensate. Richard Twilley gave us a table of MPH vs RPM for
different tire sizes and axle ratios.

1974 (no newsletter) What we did at our fourth meeting has been lost to history.
