MECHANICALLY UN-INCLINED
Ray Trujillo

Hello everyone!

It's difficult to start on a sad note, but on Sunday August 21st Ollie Scheflow
passed away and CNM lost a valued long time member. Ollie was a dedicated and
loyal member and he and his wife Mary Alice attended and participated in many of
our club's events. Ollie joined the club in May of 1992 and remained a member
for life. During their time with CNM, Ollie and Mary Alice hosted a couple of
progressive dinner stops at their beautiful Corrales home. In August of 1996,
Ollie made his most significant contribution to the club by starting and
organizing the Old Route 66 cleanup. Ollie was in charge of our club's civic
duty for eighteen years, and he did this by setting the dates, bringing the
trash bags, the fluorescent vests and the tools needed to accomplish the
clean-ups. I believe Ollie did this up until his 88th birthday. Wow, what a
go-getter he was. At his celebration of life service many of us found out that
Ollie was one of the two engineers who developed the shock absorbers used on the
lunar module that tested the surface hardness of the moon before the Apollo
astronauts were allowed to land on the moon. Now that's incredible, and what a
humble guy, as I never really heard him mention any of his engineering
accomplishments. In 2001 Ollie was presented the Ike Meissner Award for his many
years of service to our great club. CNM continues Ollie's tradition as we had
our latest Old Route 66 cleanup on August 8th, with five members showing up.
Thank you to those five members for doing our club's public service. Those five
are Lube Lubert, John Wiker, Hurley Wilvert, Robert Gold and Dave Huntoon.
Finally Ollie, thank you for your friendship and your mutual interest in
promoting the Corvair hobby, you will be missed.

Okay, let's go over the next few months of upcoming events. On Sunday September
18th CNM will once again participate in the New Mexico State Fair Car Show. This
is always a fun event and don't forget as an added bonus you get into the fair
for free. If you'd like to attend, please show up with your Corvair at 7:00 AM
at the parking lot at the corner of Central and San Pedro SE, that's the old
Furr's Cafeteria site. Next up is the NMCCC Swap meet held in Los Lunas at the
Morris Sports Complex located at Highway 314 and Morris Road. This meet runs
from Friday September 23rd to Sunday the 25th and it has really become a huge
event as more vendors seem to come every year. This is the place to find all
kinds of parts and accessories for your classic car project.

On October 5th during our monthly membership meeting we will hold our annual
election of officers. If you would like to nominate someone for a position
please clear it with that person before submitting their name. The next event
that we've been asked to participate in is the Corrales Harvest Festival which
takes place on October 16th. As some of you might recall we had four members
show their Corvairs last year and it really was a great family fun event. I'll
give you more details about the festival as soon as I get them.

Let's now review last month's activities. On Sunday August 14 the NMCCC Picnic
was held at the Oak Flats Picnic area and CNM had representation of seven
impressive Corvairs. It was great to see so many Corvairs there and thank you to
Jim Pittman, Lube Lubert, John & Anne Wiker, Robert & Anne Mae Gold, Pat &
Vickie Hall, Steve & Rita Gongora, and my wife Sylvia and yours truly for
bringing their Corvairs. I heard many members of the other car clubs commenting
on what a good showing of Corvairs came this year. So, great job CNM! The picnic
was very well attended and everything was good except some people at the end of
the food line didn't get any hamburgers or hot dogs. I guess they had more
guests than they expected. Anyway it was a perfect day for the picnic and they
had a lot of nice prizes and everyone had a good time.

On the following Saturday August 20th CNM members attended an Albuquerque
Isotopes baseball game. At first it looked like it was going to rain on us but
the storm went a different direction and it turned out to be a great night for
baseball. It was free beer stein night and many of us got there early enough to
get the free gift. Now I know what many of you are thinking and no, it was not
filled with free beer, it was just a free stein. Right before the game started
the national anthem was performed by a solo saxophonist and it was one of the
best renditions of the anthem that I've ever heard. It just lifted the patriotic
spirit of everyone in the park. The game started and we all settled into our
seats and watched the visiting team score first but then the Isotopes took a
good lead about half way through the game. Also, about halfway through the game
as we enjoyed our food and beverages the Isotopes center fielder Raimel Tapia
made two of the most amazing back-to-back catches, running up the unusual hill
located in the outfield. These catches were so good that later that evening the
plays were deemed worthy enough to make ESPN's Top Ten plays of the week. At the
end of that inning as Tapia ran into the dugout he received a standing ovation
from the hometown crowd. When the bottom of the seventh inning stretch came the
crowd stood and sang the traditional "Take me out to ball game" and everyone had
fun singing the "Peanuts and cracker jack" melody. I guess you can tell that I
thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The Isotopes went on to win the game and we all
experienced a wonderful evening of America's pastime. You know, I think I'll go
one more time before the season ends. Thanks to Robert Gold for setting up this
fun event.

I guess that's enough said for now, so I hope you to see you at the next club
meeting. -- Ray

Merchandise: Steve brought in several miscellaneous badges and plaques for
Vickie to sell or give away after the meeting. Arbitrary price is a dollar each.

Tri-State: Terry reported that some people have already tried to reserve a room
in Taos for next year's Tri-State. Alas, they were unable to do so because the
site was not ready. It is ready now, so you can reserve your room now. Terry
also brought in pamphlets for Kansas City where next year's CORSA Convention
will be held. Terry talked about constructing a temporary website for the Taos
Tri-State. There are going to be at least three games available for people of
all ages to play. He asked if we should have more of a Concourse type judging of
the cars, After some discussion the membership did not support this idea. Larry
Blair suggested that we have a safety related competition where a car's lights,
turn signals, brake lights and so forth would be checked. Larry Yoffee told
Terry that he is welcome to use his website for his Tri-State needs. A link to
it can be added to Steve's web site and Jim's web site. Terry wants to raffle
off a quilt and the better prizes during the banquet. Other door prizes will be
awarded during the Show and Shine.

can run on 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, while Corvairs and many other older
cars have problems with the current 10% ethanol fuel we have to use. Much
ethanol is made from corn. What is the cost in economic and environmental
  factors?
* Steve showed us the "Big Larry" tool he just obtained. It is an LED flashlight
with a magnetic base. * After the meeting we looked at Steve's new LED
taillights, backup lights and stop lights on his 1966 Corsa coupe.

The 50/50: the pot was $16 and Tarmo won, taking home $8.

OLIVER "OLLIE" SCHEFLOW

The world has lost a gentleman. Oliver W. Scheflow passed away at age 90 on
August 21, 2016 at his home in Corrales, New Mexico. Born and raised in Elgin,
Illinois, the only son of Oscar and Clara is survived by his wife of 65 years
Mary Alice and daughters Lynn, Elizabeth (Tibi), Alice Kenny, as well as his
son-in-law Jim and Ollie's grandsons Corrigan and Atticus.

Ollie will be remembered for his many and varied contributions as an Eagle
Scout, father, neighbor and mechanical engineer, yet much like the unassuming
grace that he often displayed, his life story can be understood by the words
curiosity, courtesy and courage. Knighted the "rocket scientist" when enshrined
in the Elgin High School hall of fame, the 1948 Purdue University graduate
started the first half of his career by contributing to our nation's race to
space while working for aerospace suppliers, such as Sun Strand and Lear
Siegler, when living in Illinois and Michigan. Along the way he produced
countless patents, one of which was a hydraulic valve in the shock absorber that
was part of the first unmanned spaceship landing on the moon. He and his family
then lived in Avon Lake, Ohio during the second half of his career, which was
when he contributed inventions to the meat cutting industry while serving as
director of engineering for Bettcher Industries, from which he retired in 1991.

In retirement, Ollie and Mary Alice have enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and
abroad. Ollie was also active with the Corvair Club of New Mexico, where he
selflessly led many teams that "kept it clean" on Albuquerque's old Route 66.
Ollie's family asks, in lieu of flowers, for friends and loved ones to kindly
make donations to Habitat for Humanity (121 Habitat St., Americus, GA
31709-3498) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (501 St Jude Place,
Memphis, TN 38105).

IN MEMORIAM OLLIE SCHEFLOW

Oliver Scheflow died on Sunday, August 21, 2016.

Along with family and friends, several members of CNM attended a memorial
service for Oliver Scheflow at Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, 1004 24th Street,
Rio Rancho on Wednesday, August 24th.

Several Corvairs parked together at the church. Ollie would have been pleased to
see them.

President Ray Trujillo gave an eloquent summary of Ollie's twenty-four years
with CNM.

Ollie was 90 years old in April. He joined CNM in May 1992. He was a faithful
member, attending meeting and activities.

Twenty years ago, in August 1996, Ollie set up our club's public service of
cleaning trash from a mile of Old Route 66 east of the city. Since then we have
cleaned three or four times per year with many members participating. For most
of those years Ollie did the work of organizing, coordinating with the
Department of Transportation and bringing safety vests, tools, plastic bags and
water.

Ollie Scheflow received the club's Ike Meissner Award in 2001.

Although in failing health, Ollie, Mary Alice and their daughter Tibi attended
our 2015 Christmas dinner party.

Your newsletter editor appreciated the articles Ollie submitted on his
impressions of the 2003 Tri-State to Raton, the 2005 club excursion to El Morro
and the tour to see Earthship Homes while attending our 2009 Tri-State in Taos.

The club was blessed to have Ollie as a member and we will miss his quiet
presence, energy and competent authority.

A BRILLIANT IDEA -- AUGUST CAR COUNCIL MEETING
Robert Gold

I've got a gift for you. This report is going to be VERY brief, since our
meeting was VERY brief. I think the short meeting was a result of two factors:
(1) Our new Prez, Jamie Saavedra is a tremendous meeting chair, and (2) Bob
Agnew seems to dislike any ventilation in our meeting room. This translates into
it was hot, hot, hot! On to the report....

Many of you know that a while ago I volunteered to "help out" with the Car
Council's website. The result was that I was put in charge of that effort. So
much for helping out. Before last night's Council meeting I had the brilliant
idea that I should document what I had done so that if anyone cared to follow in
my footsteps they'd have some information about the site. That was the main part
of my report to the Council. The group thought that was just grand.

Our treasurer then reported that the Council Picnic was a great success. We made
about $600 more than we spent. Much of that "surplus" will be donated to three
charities. I know one of them is Make-a-Wish, but I can't remember the other
two. I know one thing, as one of our presidential candidates would say, "They
are really, really great."

Reporting further on the picnic, Joyce Clements noted that we had a great
turnout for the event. However, the unexpected popularity of the picnic resulted
in about 40 people going away hungry, which means we ran out of food. They're
going to rework the picnic next year to make sure that doesn't happen again.

The rest of the meeting focused on the September 21-24, Swap Meet. Joyce told us
that we have already sold 311 spaces. This is about how many were sold at this
time last year. She was optomistic that all the spaces would be sold out well
before the event. Changes this year include a rerouting of traffic at the site
due to highway department roadwork. Also, we will be using the south baseball
field instead of the north baseball field for overflow vendors. I let the
Council know that Pat Hall would be available to help lay out the field on
Thursday and that John Wiker, Alan Gold, Art Gold, and myself would be there
bright and early (7:00 AM) on Saturday to help direct traffic. If any of you
other CNM'ers would like to help out, contact me. I should remind you that
volunteers get free lunch and a chance to cruise the field before the public
starts arriving.

With that we adjourned at 8:05. Thanks Jamie!

IT'S STATE FAIR CAR SHOW TIME AGAIN!
Robert Gold

Greetings fellow CNM'ers. Sunday September 18 is the date of the 21st edition of
the world famous State Fair Car Show. As you may know, this is an election year
and rumor has it that the two top contenders will be there to present ribbons to
the best Corvairs! However, if they fail to show up be assured that ribbons
still will be handed out.

For those of you who haven't attended any of the previous twenty shows, we will
meet at the site of the old Furr's cafeteria at the southwest corner of Central
and San Pedro. At 7:00 AM we will take the traditional group photos of the
attendees and then drive into the fairgrounds.

One fun aspect of our show is the synchronized parking activity of Corvairs that
takes place before we are all awake. I'm contemplating selling tickets to this
unique event. I hear this may be an Olympic Sport in 2020.

Seriously, this is a really fun event and I hope to see you there. Please
contact me if you have any questions. -- Robert Gold

TAOS-TRI STATE 2017
Taos Topics #1
Terry Price

Taos Pueblo was built between 1000 and 1450 AD, long before the town of Taos was
established. The pueblo is considered to be one of the oldest continuously
established communities in the United States. There was no Albuquerque, Denver
or Colorado Springs at that time. The Indians gathered over a period of time and
built a series of homes that in some places are five stories tall. Today, around
1,900 people live near the area in more modern homes, but about 20 people still
live in the pueblo year around. Taos Pueblo can be visited and there are tours
available.

The town of Taos developed next to the pueblo for protection and commerce.
Eventually, after various revolts and upheavals, the town of Taos was officially
established around 1800. One well known resident of Taos at that time was Kit
Carson, who married and established his home in Taos in 1843. His house has
become a museum and can be visited today. After the Mexican-American war in
1848, the New Mexico Territory was established, and Taos became the county seat
for the New Mexico Territory in 1850. Boundaries were established for several
states in the territory, and New Mexico became a State in 1912.

In 1915, an art colony was formed in Taos by six artists: Bert Phillips, Ernest
Blumenschein, Oscar Berninghaus, Joseph Sharp, E Erving Course and Hurbert
Dunton. The society was disbanded in 1972, but by then Taos had been established
as the significant art center it still is today. There are several art galleries
in Taos, as a result of the art colony, which are popular places to visit today.
More on these galleries in a future article.

In 1934, Taos was incorporated, in 1956 Taos Ski Valley was started and in 1965
the Taos Rio Grande Gorge Bridge was completed. In the 1960s the town became a
gathering place for hippies, "Easy Rider" was filmed there and Taos became the
Hippie Capital of the United States.

Larry Yoffee, of Corvairs of New Mexico, will be establishing a web site for the
Taos Tri-State event. It will be available soon.

Some have complained about not being able to register for the Tri-State at the

ANOTHER LESSON LEARNED UNDER THE CAR AND OVER THE CAR (CONT.)
Chris Kimberly, PIKES PEAK CORVAIR CLUB, the Dripline, May 2016

Now, lesson #2 -- As most everyone in the Club knows, the frame on my
convertible top had an accident last summer. A pressed bolt on the rear hinged
section sheared off, breaking the plastic and brass fitting inside. I was told I
would need to replace the entire frame and get a new top as a result of this.

I was very thankful to find that Dave Feasel had a replacement frame I could
have and in February I went to get it to bring it home. Dave and I were giving
the frame an initial look-over, and Dave thought I would be able to replace just
the broken section of the frame instead of the entire thing. Best of all, it
could be done without removing the cloth top.

Dave removed the needed section and I took it home to sand, prime and paint.

After replacing the rear axles, Ed said he had two more hours to help me with
replacing the broken hinge on the frame. So, we went for it!!

We had no directions. We just had the replacement hinge and knew where the bolts
needed to be removed.

First, we had to remove the rear seat, and secured the hydraulic arm from moving
while the frame parts were removed. I lowered the power top a little. We secured
the hydraulic cylinder arm with some duct tape and a vise grip. The weather
stripping was taken off, exposing some small screws. Then one by one, Ed removed
the screws and bolts. I stood outside the car, holding the top and frame so it
wouldn't collapse down and bend or land on Ed.
(Ed appreciated that .)

The last bolt was taken out and then Ed slowly put it back together, finishing
by removing the vise grip and duct tape from the hydraulic cylinder arm.

Now the real test!!! I started the power top....... Slowly, the top lowered into
place and raised again perfectly. SUCCESS!!!

You will see my baby blue car this year at the different car shows with the top
down this year. Many thanks to both Dave and Ed for parts, and sharing both
knowledge and time to teach me about my car!

I do still plan to get a new cloth top but it will be done at a shop.

SEVEN YEARS AGO [ SEPTEMBER 2016 Vol 42 Nr 9 Issue 492 ] Jim Pittman

2009 Vol 35 Nr 9 # 408

On the cover, a 1965 Monza, a near-by volcano, a distant Sandia Mountain. Vickie
& Pat told us about a museum in Los Lunas. Our August meeting was held at Ray's
printing shop. We had $4,103.04 in the bank. A "rejoined" member was Alan Gold.
The Corvair at Fifty was to be featured at the State Fair. We discussed the
effects of the "Cash for Clunkers" program on Corvair values. Rocky Mountain
CORSA planned to sponsor the 2011 CORSA Convention. President Mike Stickler said
that the summer was ending with projects left undone. Jim reviewed a Newsweek
article that asked why there are no 50-miles-per-gallon cars. Heula introduced
the ninth "earlier life" photo of a CNM member. Soon we'd have a contest to
match faces to names. Vickie told about being stranded with a broken fan belt
and no tools. Tarmo Sutt reported on a terrific steering box rebuild TUNA at
Pat's place in Los Lunas.

2002 Vol 28 Nr 9 # 324

Cover: a 1966 Corsa with two Hella driving lights and a snapshot of Robert Gold
& Hurley Wilvert at the Elk's Refuge picnic. New members were Larry & Susanne
Hickerson and Jacob Schlessinger. Wendell reported a treasury balance of $5,144.
Reports were made on a July Cruize on Central and a Car Council picnic. Plans
were underway for a Tri-State at Raton. Steve told us that Ed Black, our former
sponsor, had died. Oliver showed slides from his recent voyage around South
America. Anne Mae reported on activities of the Corvair Ladies. Mark Domzalski
reported on his drive in the "P-F-Flyer" 1966 Corsa to Flagstaff for the CORSA
convention. Problems arose when the bearing shaft, bearing, and fan worked their
way upward at highway speed. No fun to repair.

1995 Vol 21 Nr 9 # 240

Our cover showed a Beechcraft automobile. Mark Morgan explained. New member Erik
Myhren had just obtained a 1964 convertible. Guests were Don Smith and grandson
Chris. We had $940 to spend, $328 of which was ear-marked for convention
expenses. The convention planning group was meeting monthly. Bill Reider was
revising his Care & Feeding booklet. The State Fair and the Car Council Swap
Meet were on the same weekend, and what could we do about that? Our annual
report to CORSA listed 55 CNM members, eight of whom did not belong to CORSA.
Karen Souza reported on our campout at Villanueva State Park attended by the
Souza, Pleau, Vertrees, Scheflow, Reider, Domzalski and Jackson families. Only
one Corvair made the trip: a Rampside. Larry said we'd soon have talks on
carburetors and gas heaters. Tech tips: early model door rust, pros and cons of
silicone brake fluid, watching out for flood-damaged new or used cars, how your
hot-air heater works and some comments on what often happens to stolen cars.

1988 Vol 14 Nr 9 # 156

The cover picture of a pueblo reminded us of our tour to Salinas National
Monument last month, organized by Dale Housley. We had five Corvairs and one
Brand-X and we brought picnic lunches to Quarai and visited Gran Quivera. Our
treasury held $675. Sylvan organized a group to go to Moriarty to escort the
Dare Vair as part of its around-the-country tour. Bill Reider told of using 50
quarts of oil to get back from the CORSA convention in North Carolina. Tom
Martin told some of the do's and dont's he learned during his years of Corvairs
adventures. We planned an econo-run to Las Vegas.

1981 Vol 7 Nr 9 # 72

The friendly CNM dragon hitched a ride to Denver for the CORSA convention, one
of the best ever. LeRoy Rogers and Sylvan Zuercher contributed articles. We sold
CNM license plates for $2.75. Bill Reider proposed that CNM should be
incorporated. We saw films comparing the 1965 Mustang and the 1966 Corvette to
the Corvair. Our econo-run to the Very Large Array near Magdalena was a success;
Richard Twilley's 1963 Monza got 39.8 MPG and Jim Pittman's 1966 Corsa got 33.7
MPG.
