President's Message
John Wiker

Well, how is everyone doing so far this summer? By the time you get this, some
of us will be in Taos at the Tri-State. Thanks to all his planning and multiple
trips to Taos, I am sure Terry Price will have done a great job.

A thank you goes out to Robert Gold who organized our effort at the 50th
Anniversary of the Albuquerque Museum on Sunday the 21st of May. I'll let him
tell you about it in his article.

If you were at the last meeting, Vickie led us in a great discussion of
revitalizing the club with Tech Talks at meetings. Subjects can be of various
topics, not just about cars. For example, many of us take trips during the
summer and we would like to hear about those experiences. Many of our members
have "hidden" backgrounds that only they know about but others would like to
hear about. No idea is too off-the-wall. As they say, "Think outside the box"
because we are all friends here and should not be afraid of adding some
entertainment to our meetings. Maybe you have an acquaintance who is an "expert"
in some craft or business or who has a particular professional background. You
could ask them to tell us something from their past that is of interest and
maybe is not so common knowledge. All you have to do is e-mail me the name and
title so I can include it on the agenda for that particular meeting.

Since we are not having a June meeting, I guess I'll see you in July on the 5th.
Yes, that is the day after Santa Fe's Fourth of July Car Show on the Plaza.
Don't forget to ask Robert Gold for some Isotope tickets for July 29th. It's
fireworks night and CNM night. Let's have a good old "Peanuts and Cracker Jack"
time at the Old Ball Game!

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

A Lesson For Our Club
Vickie Hall

In case you didn't see the short article in the newsletter, I want to read it to
you:

"A Lesson For Our Club

"In order to better achieve the group goal, people must feel safe enough to
speak up about what's working and what's not. If everyone is too afraid to
challenge or change the way things are going, the outcome will suffer."

I am concerned about our club and what I mean by that is, we as individuals have
slowed down on CNM outings and rightfully so because of several reasons: our
age, too hot or too cold outside, in general not feeling very good or having
other things to do. Let's not give up though. Surely, we as a club can find some
things to do outside of our monthly meetings. We all need to put our thinking
caps on.

In the past, at our membership meetings, we have had some good tech talks but
they have all but ceased. Wouldn't it be nice to start those up again? Does it
necessarily need to be Corvair related? I don't know. How about something you
think would be interesting so that our members would chime in with questions and
answers?

A few years ago, I read an article about how Coca-Cola (not diet) would take
rust off of a bumper. Well, I almost brought those items for a tech talk but I
chickened out. I shouldn't have. Had I followed through, I would have been a
participant in our club and maybe showed someone something they didn't know
about. That was my loss. So, I'm saying, don't just think about doing something
--- just do it. Let's get Tech Talks back on the monthly agenda.

Thanks for listening,
Vickie Hall -- Merchandise Chairperson

May Membership Meeting -- 2017.05.03
Anne Mae Gold
Called to order at 7:09 PM

Past Minutes: approved

Officer Reports

President: John Wiker suggests that we have a motorcade out to an old fashion
ice cream shop south of Tijeras. John and Hurley will set it up for a day in
July. (Please go down to the Merchandise section to see some of the discussion
that we had over activities.) We will not have a membership meeting in June.
Since Jim and Heula will not be attending the Tri-State, please write a report
over the portion of the Tri-State you are involved with and mail it in to Jim.

VP: Lube thanked the people who came out to the Old Route 66 cleanup. Next:
Saturday July 8th at 8:00 AM.

Treasurer: $4,967.70

Committee Reports

Membership: Larry Yoffee was not in attendance.

Merchandise: Vickie Hall said nothing new has been sold. She read a short
article from the newspaper and then an essay that she wrote about participation
in club activities. She suggested bringing back tech talks. They do not
necessarily have to be about Corvairs. This sparked a good conversation about
some possibile activities. Pat Hall said that he would be willing to hold a
TUNA, maybe in September. It was also suggested that we ask some schools that
have auto shops if they'd like us to bring our cars over to show the students.
But, do schools have auto shops any more?

Car Council: Robert Gold reported that the Museum Car Show will be held Sunday
May 21. We will meet at 7:00 AM at the Hotel Albuquerque parking lot to stage
and then drive in all together. The Car Council president will be reaching out
to different clubs to help. The Swap Meet will be held in September in Los
Lunas. Officials in Los Lunas have become concerned about the grass on the field
being maintained for soccer. The north field will not be open to us, just the
south lot. After this year the swap meet may have to find another venue. Perhaps
the Moriarty airport? Joyce Clements does not want to work on the Swap Meet if
it has to move to another venue, but will help if someone steps up. The 66
Rodders also have a swap meet in Los Lunas and they will be in the same position
as the Car Council. Robert has been contacted by the State Fair. The State Fair
Car Show will be September 17.

Editor: Jim Pittman said that the newsletter deadline is Friday, May 26. He said
he had joined both Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain Corvairs. He showed the name
tag that Pikes Peak sent him. It is held on with a magnet instead of a pin. John
will look into getting similar name tag fasteners.

New Business:
	MAY 21 Museum Car Show;
	JUN 2-4 Tri-State in Taos;
	JUN - No membership meeting;
	JUN 21 Board Meeting;
	JUL  8 Old Route 66 Cleanup;
	AUG 13 - Car Council Picnic;
SEP 17 - State Fair Car Show.

Taos Tri-State:

Terry Price led a discussion over various aspects of planning for the Tri-State.
Larry's records show about 90 people attending and Terry's records show 120
people attending the banquet. CNM and Rocky Mountain have good sized groups
attending. Terry also contacted other neighboring Corvair clubs in the area. The
Kachina Lodge is looking spruced up. The biggest problem is with the sound
system. The hotel has three sound systems, one is too small, one is too big, and
one is just right. Terry has not heard the sound system. As of yet we do not
have an outside sound system. We should have a cork board or a white board to
post winners. Steve Gongora will do the Boydston Award presentation.

Pat and Vickie are coming up with frames for the certificates. Robert is going
to be making the certificates. John has given Robert the gold seals for the
certificates.

Hurley Wilvert has asked that membership volunteers provide finger foods. No
cakes or pies; cupcakes, cookies, pre-cut brownies or other items that require a
lot of preparation. Individually wrapped snack foods are okay. Please do not
serve the food on anything but paper plates or aluminum containers. Please call
or email Hurley or Brenda to let them know what you will be donating. They would
like to have all goodies by Friday. They can come by, pick your stuff up and
transport it if need be.

Pat will be in charge of the games. There will be a fan belt toss but no O-ring
toss.

The quilt is a T-shirt quilt. Tarmo Sutt reported that Kay is making the quilt
using three T-shirts from each of three clubs; CNM, Pikes Peak, and Rocky
Mountain.

Quite a few of us are heading up on Thursday morning. We will meet at the
Domingo Baca parking area (that is, our regular meeting location) at 9:00 AM
with an estimated departure time of 9:30 AM. John and Tarmo will meet us in
Santa Fe.

The 50/50 drawing was won by LeRoy. He donated his winnings to the Sunshine
Committee.

May Board Meeting Minutes - 2017.05.17
Anne Mae Gold

Called to order = 5:00

Officer Reports:

President = Name tag report... $1.75 for the magnet name tags. It may be time to
update our name tags.

VP = No membership meeting in June, Lube will chair the Board meeting on June
21, and the Membership meeting on July 5.

Treasurer = $4,576.66 in account. We also received bills for the T-Shirts
($1,590.37) and the Tri-State Plaque ($104.03) so the treasury total is actually
$2,882.26.

Committee Reports:

Membership = Larry has nothing to report.

Merchandise = Vickie was not present.

Car Council = Robert is stuffing bags for the Museum Car Show this Sunday.

Editor = Friday May 26th is the newsletter deadline. Pictures and articles from
the Museum Car Show may be included, or Jim may make a separate Car Show report.

Coming Events:

SUN MAY 21 -- Albuquerque Museum Car Show
SAT JUL 29 -- Isotopes Baseball
SAT AUG 5 -- Olde Tyme Ice Cream Shop - south of Tijeras.

John showed us a menu from the Olde Tyme Ice Cream Shop. Hurley will confirm the
date with them. On Saturday August 5 we will meet at the Smiths grocery store at
Tramway and Central and caravan out to Tijeras and down "Old South 14" or NM 337
to the Olde Tyme Ice Cream Shop.

Tri-State Wrap Up:

Terry:
The hotel will be able to provide a sound system. Steve Gongora will make the
presentation of the Boydston Award. Terry will be putting together an itinerary
for the Tri-State so people can know what is going on when and where. Vickie has
the bags stuffed and ready to go. The center pieces are complete. The Quilt will
be raffled at $3 for one ticket or two for $5. All other raffle items will go
for $1 per ticket or six for $5. The Wilverts will be in charge of the
Hospitality Room. They have asked membership to bring foods that are individual
and self-contained. In the March newsletter, there is a point system to help
with scoring for the travel award. Terry's count for attendance so far is: 44
cars, 131 banquet, 93 shirts (including 8 "spec" shirts). The entree choices are
Beef, Chicken, or Mexican. They can accommodate vegans/vegetarians.

Larry:
There are 85 T-shirts ordered plus the 8 spec shirts. The club will make $5 per
shirt, so we should make a $465 profit. Larry has his own cash box for the
T-shirt sales. Larry took down the ordering part of the website on May 2. The
spec shirts will be sold at the Tri-State. We will need at least two tables: one
for T-shirt sales and one for registration.

John asked a clarification question for the point system. See the Tri-State
article in the March newsletter.

Those caravaning up on Thursday: meet at Domingo Baca at 9:00 AM with a planned
departure time of 9:30. The Wikers will meet us at I-25 and NM 599.

Adjourned at 6:00 PM

The New Mexico "Chile Capital of the World" license plate is scheduled to be
available in June 2017. The cost is to be the same as for a standard license
plate. There will be a small fee if you wish to change your present plate to the
Chile plate.

A BOMBSHELL -- April Car Council Report
Robert Gold

I had two disappointing things happen during the April Council meeting. The
first, because our terrific President, Jamie Saavedra was able to make the
meeting, I wasn't at the front table to fill in for her. The second
disappointment I'll get to later.

The meeting began with the introduction of yet another new member of the
Council, The New Mexico Jeep Group. In addition to the new club, a current
member, New Mexico 4-Wheelers, had a new representative. Lauri Rector, their rep
and the former Council President, had been replaced. Sorry I didn't get the name
of the 4-Wheelers president who took her place. Anyway, things are looking up
for the Council. This was the third or fourth straight meeting that we had
welcomed a new club. That's good news.

Joe Ballengee then gave a glowing report about the Council's finances. I always
have contended that life is filled with irony. In this case our current
wonderful financial condition may be headed for a problem. More about that
later.

Jamie reported that the Council Facebook page had over 1,000 likes. I'm still
not sure what that means, but that's good. I reported that nearly 700
individuals had looked at the website over the previous week. I KNOW that that
is good.

We then moved on to discussion of upcoming Council events. The Museum Car Show,
to be held on Sunday, May 21st, is proceeding at a positive pace. The reps voted
on a new aspect of the show. We will be handing out model car kits to kids,
intended to increase their interest in classic cars. The distribution will be
made like a scavenger hunt. The kids will be tasked to find various types of
cars at the show and document that fact with the car's entry number. After they
fill out their sheet and return it, they get a model kit. Pretty nifty. Many
thanks to Joe Ballengee of the Model Car Club for doing all the legwork on this.
In addition to the show celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Albuquerque
Museum, we'll also be celebrating Thunderbird Appreciation Day. Those guys will
get a special display card for their rides. I hope CNM is well represented at
the show as well.

Jamie Saavedra then spoke of the April 13 Car Council picnic. She will be
heading up the effort and will be recruiting various members to help out. I
guess one of those members will probably be me. It's a great event and deserves
our support. One change is that we'll be dialing back publicity for the event.
Only cars from member Car Council clubs will be welcome. Last year, so many
people attended that we ran out of food. Not a good thing. I'm sure we'll have
just as much fun with a smaller group.

I don't know if it was my imagination, but I felt a sorta rumbling beneath me as
Joyce Clements stepped forward to talk about this year's Swap Meet. I sat up a
bit when she began by saying half of our traditional space was now off limits
for our use. The north field was withdrawn to seed it for soccer use. Things
went from bad to worse when Joyce described the future of the event. To be sure,
we are hard wired for 2017, however, the future does not look good. A cabal of
political types has decided that soccer is more important to the Village of Los
Lunas, than the various other events that it has been hosting over the past
several years. In English that means "CAR GUYS ARE NOT TO TREAD ON OUR GRASS."
After a number of productive events, both for the Council and for the Village of
Los Lunas, we are being shown the exit. Since this event is the major source of
funds for the Council, this hit our group like an explosion.

But wait, there's more. Joyce made it known that if the event was no longer to
take place in Los Lunas, she would be ending her involvement as the event's
organizer. She said she is just not up to starting from scratch at another site.
For the Council, the bombshell had just turned nuclear. To be fair, the only bad
guys in this are the politicos down south, not the Lost Lunas Park and
Recreation folks. They still like us, but they may not prevail in this case.

What's now left for the Council, if we lose the Los Lunas site, is to locate
another place to hold the event. Several alternate ideas were mentioned. One
possible definite place would be the Moriarty Airport. The main concern is who
will take the reins from Joyce. Nothing was resolved at the meeting in either
case.

So, we finished up with talk about non-Council events in the area. And with
that, the meeting was adjourned.

-- Robert Gold

Topes Night July 29
Robert Gold

Hi CNM'ers -- At our last meeting we talked about having a CNM outing to see the
Topes. Our last year's event was a big success, so we decided to do it again.
The date selected is Saturday, July 29. The game is to begin at 7:05. It is a
fireworks night, which means that tickets will be going fast.

We need 20 tickets to get a special deal on reserved seats. I checked online and
a lot of the seats have already been bought. I'm therefore asking you all to
contact me as soon as possible so we can buy the seats before they are all gone.

Please drop me an email it if you are interested and let me know how many
tickets you'll want. Once I find out the cost of the tickets I'll let you know.
The tickets are normally $12.00, but our cost should be a couple of dollars
less.

I look forward to hearing from you SOON.

Thanks -- Robert

Taos: 33rd Annual Tri State
June 2-4 2017
The Editor

If you plan to attend, you have probably already made all your preparations and
reservations. If not, the place for last-minute checking is Larry's web page
http://www.corsaturbo180usa.com
where you may find answers to any remaining questions.

Some who attend Tri-States just come and enjoy the event and go home again, but
others spend a little more time and look for nearby attractions. There are
plenty of those near Taos.

My first visit to Taos was in 1967 when I was new to "the west" and New Mexico.
In those early years I spent a lot of time and drove a lot of miles in my 1966
Corsa coupe exploring the "Land of Enchantment" and other parts of the
southwest. I drove the "High Road to Taos" and around the "Enchanted Circle"
more than once or twice. When we were preparing for the 2009 Tri-State, Joel
Nash told us about the many possibilities for sightseeing around the circle. I
am attaching the maps Joel provided at that time.

In July of 1970 I got to visit Taos for a long weekend in the company of a crew
of University of New Mexico medical students. Part of the job of the students
was to provide medical care to "communes" in the vicinity of Taos, so I got to
tag along with them to visit three or four hippie communes, a wonderful
opportunity. We drove across the famous Rio Grande Gorge bridge on US 64 (and
stopped at the western end and walked back to the middle of the bridge --
scary!) and then drove on dirt roads to the west of the river, returning over a
tiny bridge on NM 567. One of the students said he knew of a road that would
take us to a trail where we could hike down to the river. We went along a rutted
track toward the gorge and hiked down the 650 or so vertical feet to the river.
Along the way we saw the ruins of a hot springs resort that we later recognized
was featured in the movie Easy Rider. At the bottom we anticipated a fabulous
desert sunset by the time we hiked out, but instead found clouds and raindrops.
Before we got to the top a summer thunderstorm was in full fury and we were
drenched and muddy. We almost did not get out of the gorge alive! We were lucky
not to get blasted by lightning.

In 1989 I drove my 1965 Monza coupe, purchased a year earlier from Dale Housley,
on the "High Road to Taos" and around through Angel Fire and Eagle Nest. I made
my first visit to the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial, a lonely place filled
with somber thoughts and haunted by thousands of names of servicemen who died in
the war. The 1989 Red River Tri-State was such a hit that we went back twice, in
1995 and in 2011. For the 2009 Tri-State in Taos we took the High Road and it
seemed much longer and much rougher than I remembered. Has the road
deteriorated, or is my memory at fault? But the scenery was still magnificent.

Snapshots from a trip to Taos in July 1970.

Car Show Season
John Wiker

As you can tell by the e-mails sent out from Joyce and forwarded by Robert gold,
the heavy season of car shows has begun. I took advantage of Ron and Sue's
invite and showed up at the Smoose and Cruise they hosted at the Sonic on San
Mateo on the 9th of April. There were 66 cars in the lot at various times.
People kept coming and going as their busy schedule allowed. Mine was the only
Corvair but I was not the only member who came that day. Lube and his brother
brought their truck and parked it among all the rest of the vehicles. I took
some pictures as usual and as got down to their parking spot, the truck was gone
as Lube told me later, there were other things to do that day as well. This was
the 11th time the event was held according to the dash plaque I got for coming.
The weather was beautiful and the company delightful and stories were many. What
a good way to start the year!

A new distributor for one of my Corvairs
Fran

I have fallen "out of love" with Pertronix. Mainly due to their lack of
responsibility concerning warranty of their products. Many/All of my CORVAIRs
have run them for years and years, but they fail -- a lot more often than the
price would indicate. When I had an unusual failure and I thought it was NOT
something I might have done, I contacted them, time and again, with only a
canned response. So, I have decided to go a different route.

Turns out this is a happy move. There are several features to the new
distributor that the standard CORVAIR distributor did not have. I think this one
is from a modern Chevrolet but have not yet confirmed that point. The new one is
taller - see photo - but inside is where the rubber meets the road. Of course
there are no points. The rotor is like the 1960 distributor and it sits up high
on top of the mechanical advance. There is a six-lobed iron 'reactor' that
passes by the sensor to tell the unit when to fire, and it sits right under the
rotor - nice and high. The mechanical advance is really neat as it continues to
advance as the revs increase, getting up to 20 degrees at about 5000 RPM. There
is also a vacuum advance for cruising around town. Also, a connection for the
Tachometer, if you like. Oh, the cap is held down by the same push/turn device
used back in the fifties - just a quarter turn, really easy! You can see the
quarter-turn clamp in the photo right by the vacuum advance. The cap can be for
regular CORVAIR type plug wires or the HEI type used on more modern engines.
Speaking of plug wires 1 got the distributor from Seth Emerson who sells plug
wires (Distributors, too) - obviously with either terminations. He also can
provide plug wires in at least a half dozen different colors! Colored coils,
too!

If you want a couple, he's at SETHRACER@aol.com or check this web page:
https://www.perfvair.com/stinger-ignition-distributors/

Price for this new unit is a little above a replacement Pertronix. I was
pleasantly surprised to get this robust new distributor for less than twice the
price of a Pertronix II (the Red guy). Pertronix also has a snappier model which
I have not priced but am assuming its price is comparable to this new
distributor. Obviously, a new distributor has new bushings and thrust plates as
well.

Wiring is even simpler as the new unit comes with a waterproof connector
built-in that connects to the coil's Plus, Minus and Ground. Oh, your old
original stock CORVAIR coil will probably not work very well with this unit so
if you haven't upgraded to a better coil in the past fifty years -- now would be
a good time.

For those with a discerning eye, the distributor drawn in the sketch is not for
an 8 cylinder CORVAIR!

Happy CORVAIRing, Fran

Oil To Use In Arizona
Wayne Mechenes and Larry Claypool

[The following question from long distance CCE member Wayne Mechenes arrived at
the office of the Airhorn. Larry Claypool's response follows.]

Wayne Mechenes: Question: What Oil for Arizona?

We are settled in Arizona, but I have a dilemma. I used to take my Corvair to
the Vair Shop, but now I am in Arid-zona and need to change the oil myself.

I have been reading stuff on the Internet and it is confusing. Most say I need a
zinc additive and some say not to use diesel oil.

I heard Rotella was good and Royal Purple, and Valvoline VR1.

What oil would you recommend? I used to have 10W30 put in, but would 15W40 be
better in a hot climate?

Larry Claypool: Answer and Discussion of Oil for Corvairs

Hi Wayne,

The question on what weight to use is fairly straightforward, for those warmer
climates (and back here in summertime) I would use 10w40 or if you are using a
diesel blend, 15w40. Now as to what brand, you have opened a huge unorganized
box labeled mixed opinions and facts.

The topic of zinc (ZDDP [zinc dialkyldithiophosphate]) content has volumes
written on it over the last ten years. You can spend days reading about it on
the Internet. The ZDDP additive was blended in as an antiwear compound
specifically targeted to control copper/lead bearing corrosion. Oils with a
phosphorus level in the 0.03% range passed a corrosion test introduced in 1942.
In the mid-1950s, with the advent of new OHV V8 engines with higher lift cams
and more RPM potential, this amount was increased to prevent the potential for
scuffing at the camshaft/lifter contact. Wear between the two became an early
issue with the several of the "new" V8's. Now of course there is supposed to be
a film of oil between the parts to prevent actual contact but it takes a while
for oil to flow (especially on a cold start up) and when an engine is not run
for several weeks the oil drips off those parts leaving little left to create
the film.

In the simplest terms I can think of, imagine the ZDDP is like paint and you
spray painted the camshaft with it. It covers surface and provides protection
between the parts. But just like spray paint protection depends on how thick it
is, and of course it will wear through if no lubrication (oil) comes to the
rescue.

An unintended side effect of ZDDP is as engines aged and began to burn oil, the
ZDDP (suspended in the oil) would poison the catalytic converters which became
standard on most vehicles in 1975. As manufacturers were required to warranty
converters for 80,000 or more miles, the prospect of installing new ones for
free on many high mile clunkers was none too appealing, so manufactures
eventually asked for a reduction in the amount of the ZDDP added to the oil.
Previously the amount was in the neighborhood of .08% to .12%. In the middle
1980's roller lifters began to appear on a number of higher volume production
engines. The little wheel on the bottom rolls over the cam instead of sliding on
it, thus friction is reduced and the roller allows a steeper "ramp" than would
be possible with ordinary flat lifters. While more expensive to make, the
benefit was more fuel mileage and power, a combination irresistible to
manufacturers. Within ten years, flat lifters were all but gone from regular
production autos in mainstream countries. The need for ZDDP had diminished
significantly, so the percentage of it added to regular oils has been reduced
several times since then.

About the time oil classifications went from SL to SM, reports of flat lifter
camshaft failure, particularly on new cams just installed (or rebuilt engines)
began to circulate widely in collector car circles. It's really difficult to get
an accurate percentage of how much ZDDP is in a given can of oil; it's not
listed on the can or on most websites, and info you do find may not be up to
date. Today's common oils are in the .06% range. Diesel oils like Shell Rotella
T have previously had higher levels of ZDDP than regular car rated oils, but
again it's hard to say exactly what percentage is in the bottle you buy today.
There are quite a few specialty oils being blended aimed specifically at the
collector car market and noted prominently on their labels as having higher
amounts of the additive. And you can also buy just the additive itself to "soup
up" whatever regular oil you may choose. ZDDP Plus is one of the more readily
available brands.

If you have a flat lifter engine, especially if it sits for weeks on end between
use or a modified engine with hi lift cam/stronger valve springs, you should
indeed consider oil with higher levels of ZDDP. A new camshaft installation (or
rebuilt engine) absolutely demands a higher ZDDP mix for break in (most cam
manufactures include a bottle of the additive with your cam purchase).

Synthetic oil can offer some benefits in temp extremes, I do use it in my cars
that I need to start when it's 15 below; likewise, it does not break down as
easily at high temps. I use synthetics in my air-conditioned Corvairs which
certainly can push oil temps into uncomfortable numbers. Synthetics are not a
bad choice as long as you are getting at least 1000 miles to a quart. If your
engines drips or burns a lot more than that, it gets pretty expensive to feed it
stuff that's four to seven bucks a pop. Unless of course you only put on 1000 or
so miles a year!

Now for your specific question, on the Corvair engine, its cam sits low in the
crankcase, and gets plenty of lubrication as oil flings off the crankshaft from
right above. Cam wear has never been a common issue on Corvairs and I haven't
seen increase in worn out cams over the last ten years; so with that said, I use
Shell Rotella T 15w40 in most cars in my fleet.

A Circle of Friends
May Car Council Report
Robert Gold

The question of the day -- Why would a group of adults show up and work for
almost two hours for little more than a piece of pizza (It was great pizza!) and
some salad (I never trust food that is green.)? But that's exactly what just
happened at the most recent meeting of the Car Council. Upwards of 30 people
lined up and circulated around a table stuffing various giveaways in bags for
the May 21, Museum Car Show.

I have an answer to that question... because it was fun! I marveled as I heard
conversations and laughter from all parts of the meeting room. On top of that,
noted automobile artist, Perry Key, sought me out and gave me a free, signed
print of drawings of Corvairs through the years. What's not to like about an
event like that? When all was said and done we had almost 400 bags ready to be
given away at the Museum Car Show.

With that work done, we settled in to eat pizza and conduct an abbreviated
business meeting. Here's my report on that part of the meeting:

The meeting got going with the introduction of a guest who was now part of the
local Jeep Club after she had moved here from Boston, Mass. I got a chance to
tell her my Mom grew up in Boston. One of my great regrets is that I didn't
develop a Boston accent because my family moved to the Midwest while I was still
making baby talk. I am happy, however, to have grown up a Cardinals fan instead
of part of the Red Sox Nation...

Our treasurer reported that our finances were in good shape. He went on to say
that he had purchased model cars for the upcoming car show. These kits would be
given out to youngsters who completed a scavenger hunt of sorts. I can't wait to
see how this works out. Wouldn't it be nice to interest young people in the car
hobby?

Joyce Clements quickly described preparations for Sunday's car show.
Preparations were pretty complete. Everyone who volunteered just needs to show
up and do their jobs. One thing Joyce mentioned was that the class listed on the
information card that you attach to your car cannot be changed. If there is any
hanky panky your car won't be judged. Boooo.

Next on the agenda was Collector Car Appreciation Day to be held on July 15.
Mild to Wild Classics elected to not host the event in Albuquerque this year.
Jamie Saavedra suggested the Car Council step in with an event. Discussion was
made on the possibility of a poker run. Jamie will be getting back to us as to
the plans. I'll let you know what will happen.

We then talked about the All Clubs Picnic in August. I committed CNM to provide
napkins and paper plates for the event. Also, I stepped up and volunteered to
help man the front gate for the event. The picnic has always been fun and I
encourage all our club members to be there. I'll tell you more about it later.

Lastly, Joyce talked about the messed up plans for the Swap Meet in September.
It's messed up because the Village of Los Lunas officials have elected to
discontinue the event after this year. From what I gather, the only reason we
are doing it in 2017 is because they signed contract with the Car Council. It's
a shame when elected officials unilaterally decide to stop an event that brings
recognition and money to their community. I won't say it is is dumb... I will
say it is DUMB!!

In an attempt to persuade the "city fathers" to change their minds we are
circulating a petition to be sent to them. You can access the online part of the
petition through the Car Council Facebook page, or through the Council website.

With that we ended the meeting. All in all it was a great time. -- Robert Gold

IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR
Museum Car Show Report
Robert Gold

I've always considered the car hobby as an extended family. No event better
proves this attitude than the annual Car Council Museum Car Show. It is at this
event that classic car owners in Albuquerque pull out the gems that have been
hiding in their garages and share them with the public. I'm generally not
comfortable talking to strangers, but this event is an exception. All I have to
do is comment on an aspect of a stranger's classic car and I'm immediately
having a pleasant conversation and a new friend.

This all gets to the point of the article and why I titled it "A Family Affair".
Once I thought about how this show brings car people together like a family, I
also thought about how the families of our club members come together for our
shows. For the members of the Gold family, this interest in Corvairs has been
taken to the extreme. Rather than just showing up to enjoy one car at the show,
my whole family shows up in their own Corvairs. This means my wife, Anne Mae,
and our children, Art, Javi and Sara attended the show behind the wheel of their
own special car. Here is the lineup for this year's Museum Car Show:

1. Anne Mae (1961 Lakewood),
2. Art (1965 Monza -- this car was specially honored by the Car Council this
   year),
3. Sara (1964 Monza),
4. Javi (1966 Corsa), and
5. Robert (1961 Lakewood).

I feel humbled to think that my family shares my interest in cars. This makes
me feel optimistic for the future of the car hobby in general.

I guess that since this supposed to be a report on the Museum Car Show I shold
tell you a bit more about this year's event.

The weather, as usual, was MAGNIFICENT. Every parking spot in the Musuem parking
lot was filled for a total of about 400 cars. In addition, the parking spots for
our 10 Corvairs were located in a nice, shady corner of the parking lot. I hope
next year we wind up in the same place! Our turnout was the best in years.
Thanks guys (and gals). For the record here is a listing of non-members of the
Gold family who turned out for this year's event. Without your participation it
wouldn't have been near as much fun:

1. John Wiker in his delightful 1966 Monza.
2. Lube Lubert in his legendary Great White Hope, a 1963 Monza.
3. Ray Trujillo in his tidy 1965 Corsa Convertible.
4. Larry Yoffee in his 1965 Monza Convertible. You need sun glasses to look at
   this shiny beauty.
5. Terry Price who drove the 1966 Monza of our late member, Bob Garret, a really
   nice gesture.
6. Dave Huntoon in his recently reconditioned 1963 Monza Convertible.

Again, many thanks for the great turnout. This is why I love hanging with you
folks. -- Robert Gold

2010 Vol 36 Nr 6 # 417

GM's 1966 electric vehicle was the Electrovair II. Treasury: $3,695. A man
planned to donate $40,000 to the car council to fund an annual award for auto
restoration. A visitor gave a long spiel on obtaining a title for your
title-less purchase. Robert Gold reported on a great Museum Car Show which: 13
Corvairs. Jim pointed out the distraction problems of gaudy, chrome-infested
tail light housings. Richard Finch told how to install grease fittings on late
rear axle bearings. A few racing photos plus photos and a report (thanks,
Heula!) on a fabulous Tri-State at Canon City, CO.

2003 Vol 29 Nr 6 #333

The Albuquerque Museum car show. We met at Galles Chevrolet. Wendell Walker
reported $5688. Guest Dwight Simmons owned a Corvair rail. Mark Martinek
reported on the Car Council. Del's father Dave Patten was to be interred at the
Santa Fe National Cemetery. Bob Philips was looking for a gold 1966 turbo coupe
he worked on years ago. Fred Edeskuty received Corvair-specialized tools from
Robin Devore. Hurley Wilvert thanked all who attended his motorcycle race. VP
Joel Nash ran our board meeting. Sylvan told us that Ray Trujillo had bought a
four-door and planned to join. President Robert Gold mentioned Geoff Johnson's
world-famous yellow Corvair. Del Patten reported on the Museum car show and his
purple Corvair. Wendell told about his home-made 1963 Cadillac convertible.
Richard Finch told how to keep original AC mechanical Corvair fuel pumps working
by rebuilding with good repair kits.

1996 Vol 22 Nr 6 #249

The "Vairs in the Air" convention logo. We had 54 paid-up members and $713 in
the bank. Bill Reider reported that the convention bank account held $13,717.
The Montrose Tri-State was May 10th, The Albuquerque Museum car show was May
19th and the Convention was June 18-22. Ollie Scheflow coordinated our Old Route
66 cleanup project. No one had time to set up a CNM web site. Debbie Pleau
previewed the convention. Mark Domzalski said the Montrose Tri-State was
excellent and a great break before the big push to the convention! Heula wrote
about our trip to Montrose. Tech tips this month: tuning up your air
conditioner, outfitting your FC with good shocks.

1989 Vol 15 Nr 6 #165

The cover was a map to our Red River Rendezvous. A new member was Tom Roback.
Tom Martin told some tales from his days as an FBI agent. In one a 1964 Monza
was the getaway car, but the driver forgot to reset his watch upon crossing a
time zone and the crooks were busted. BILLIKEN illustrated Mark Morgan's trip
from L.A. to Texas. Bill Reider said to get a sintered bronze pilot bushing, not
an iron one.

1982 Vol 8 Nr 6 # 81

The cover: a Corvair-powered Ultravan just like the one Francis Boydston drove
all around the country. Carl Johnson told us how to replace a 3-speed with a
4-speed. Jim Pittman told more about WHY I OWN A CORVAIR. Finally, a reminder of
how fortunate we were in 1982 to have so many competent, knowledgeable, helpful
members in our club.

1975 Vol 1 Nr 6 # 6

The cover reprinted Mark Morgan's letter to the editor of ROAD & TRACK
commenting on their road tests of a Monza 2+2 and an Mustang II. They included
information on the original Corvair Monza. We had 37 members. Andy Ciupryk
showed us a proposed club license plate. Editor Mark was leaving to spend the
summer with the Navy and Steve Gongora took over the newsletter.
