THANK YOU
John Wiker

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the membership for honoring me
with the Meissner award this year. Although my professional life required me to
resign as president, I fully intend to attend meetings and events as well as
help plan them unless they conflict with the AFJROTC program I was thrust into
again. For example, I always help with the Old Route 66 cleanup, but that is
also the day of the State Championship Drill meet in which I have three teams
entered. Thanks to Anne Mae for preparing a great presentation that I did not
have time for since there were about 100 Cadets at the Embassy Suites hotel
waiting for me to introduce the Court and crown the winners and supervise the
dance. I know she put her heart into it and I had to disappoint her with my
quick exit, but not before I presented Rita & Steve Gongora with the bingo
plaque the club was holding on to since the Christmas party. I'll have news on
this year's Bingo Event at the next meeting. Again, thanks for the award. See
you the 4th of April. -- John

SATURDAY VMCCA TOUR
John Wiker

Three Corvair families joined the VMCCA club at the Lewis Museum in Moriarty on
24 March at about 1030. We spent about an hour and a half inside and out of the
property. The Jeff Johnson family, Anne & John Wiker and Dave Huntoon roamed
around looking at all the restored cars inside and those in bad condition on the
outside. We found a Greenbrier and an early model Corvair outside. What I
enjoyed most was all the old metal cars, riding tractors, scooters, bicycles,
skates that are not made anymore.

We then left for the Moriarty Airport to visit the Commemorative Aircraft
hangar. You may have know these as the Confederate Air Force in the past. There
are over 300 World War Two aircraft in groups of two or three around the World
to include Europe, Australia, Africa and the US. One of the two here is flyable
and the other, a C-45 which looks like a giant Sky King airplane from the TV
show, is being rebuilt from inside out to include all new wiring and rebuilt
engines. They think it may be ready to fly in about two years. They work on the
plane every Saturday and serve lunch to the workers and visitors.

For $6.00 we had a great cheeseburger with all the trimmings, potato salad,
chips, drinks and big cookies and plenty of conversation about their planes and
our cars, especially mine that was air cooled like their airplanes. We never got
to Estancia for lunch nor did we visit the garage there because the owner was
out of town.

It was a pleasant short day and we got home to see all the golf on TV. What a
pleasant low pressure day that I have not had since mid January. I left home
without my camera, but Anne took some with her phone. We will try to get them
downloaded to get them to the newsletter. -- John

PHOTO: No, not the C-45 -- this is a 1944 Howard GH-3 seen
on an earlier club visit to the Moriarty airport.

MARCH MEETING -- 2018.03.07
Anne Mae Gold

Members in attendance: 16

Called to order at 7:00 PM

OFFICER REPORTS:

President: Lube brought up and we discussed a change of venue for the membership
meeting. Why? Because of the attempted break-in that recently happened to Larry
Blair's new pickup. Lube talked to Bob Agnew about meeting at the World Wide
Garage on the first Wednesday of the month. Bob would charge the club $35.00 to
rent it each time Club members are not in favor of paying for a space. The
Domingo Baca Center is a known quantity. Break-ins could happen anywhere. It is
very problematic to move the time or the place where a club meets. It was agreed
that the club will continue to meet here... same place, same time.

VP: Art had no updates.

Secretary: Anne Mae thanked Vickie and the Sunshine Committee for their
thoughtfulness at bringing color in to our meetings.

Treasurer: $7,255.44 is the current balance.

COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS

Editor: Friday 23 March at 9:00 PM is the newsletter deadline.

Car Council: Lube attended the last meeting and made an attempt to drum up
interest in help with the Old Route 66 Cleanup. Robert stated that there were a
lot of visitors in attendance. The New Mexico Senate derailed the bill asking
that New Mexico go to two license plates. The thinking is that this would cut
down on car theft. Steve Gongora said front license plates would allow automated
camera readers to record and detect "wanted" license plates by accessing a
national database. Those in the car hobby are not in favor of a front license
plate for several reasons. Expense is just one. The Los Lunas Swap Meet will be
September 27-30, same place as before. Joyce is no longer heading it, but she
will still be involved. Pat and Lube are willing to go out and paint lines on
Thursday... Thanks guys! May 20 is the Albuquerque Museum Car Show. The theme is
vintage imported vehicles. Please go on to the website to find out about car
shows in our area:	nmcarcouncil.com
Steve suggested that, if we lose the Los Lunas venue, the Car Council should ask
the Albuquerque City Council for help in finding a new venue for the Swap Meet
if a new site is needed... maybe the Wheels Museum area?

Merchandise: Vickie said that nothing has been sold lately. All the merchandise
that is left is old stock, that may be one of the reasons nothing sells. She
suggests that money may be better spent by investing in new items. Maybe raffle
an item. Let Vickie get the funds she thinks the Sunshine Committee will need
from the treasurer. Sunshine Committee update: Vickie and Heula are working on
table decorations and door prizes. Robert will have a slide show ready to go.
Vickie taught us about Saint Patrick. March 17th, Saint Patrick's Day, is her
birthday! Many blessings be upon you Vickie!

Membership: David had no new members. No news.

UPCOMING EVENTS

* March 10, 6:30 PM Anniversary Dinner at Golden Corral on San Mateo NE.

(SEE BOARD MEETING MINUTES BELOW FOR MORE EVENTS.)

NEW BUSINESS

* Christee's Spuds Burgers and More is a restaurant on Indian School just east
of Wyoming. They have a meeting room. We'll plan a Club breakfast on April 14th
at 9:30 AM. The address is 8600 Indian School NE.

* Pat told us that Carl Clasmeyer wants to sell his 1968 Monza convertible. It
has engine problems (dropped valve?) and he is asking $6,500, but price is
negotiable.

* Terry says there is another Corvair for sale at $12,000, it is the red Robert
Garrecht Corvair that he drove to the last Museum Car Show. It won a trophy at
that time.

* John Wiker said that November is a long time away, but it is when we have
traditionally had our Bingo night. The club continues to want to have the
Bingo/Auction/Pot Luck. We could hold it on a Friday night at Manzano Mesa
Multi-generational Center (Eubank and Elizabeth). He will attempt to make a
reservation for the second Friday in November.

* Tarmo told us about Comedians Driving Cars Getting Coffee. It is now showing
on Netflix. He says the cars are beautiful.

The 50/50 pot was $18 - winner takes $9 - and the winner is - Pat Hall!

Adjourned at 8:06 PM

MARCH BOARD MEETING - 2018.03.21
Anne Mae Gold

Present:
Jim Pittman, Anne Mae Gold, Robert Gold, Lube Lubert, Dave Huntoon, Art Gold

Called to order at 5:01 PM

OFFICER REPORTS

PRESIDENT: Lube reminded us of the Old Route 66 Cleanup. Robert is to bring his
stuff since Lube is still locked out of his shed. If you come out to the Cruise
and Schmoose, it is at the Sonic next to the Goodwill. They raise money for
Goodwill and you can drop off your unwanteds. Lube asked if anyone would be
interested in buying a Greenbrier, it used to belong to Dell Patten.

VP: Art had nothing to report.

SECRETARY: Anne Mae suggests that she or the VP write the agenda for the General
Membership meeting.

TREASURER: Current balance is $7,008.36

COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS

EDITOR: Jim states that this Friday, March 23 at 9:00 PM is the deadline for the
newsletter. It is pretty full this month already. Jim has received some emails
from the Colorado clubs regarding the Boydston Award. They said that Rocky
Mountain Corsa will be doing the Boydston Award totally within their club, so we
will not have a nomination form or nominate anyone from our club. This is in
line with what was decided in 2009 at Taos. The Pikes Peak club is scouting for
a venue for the 2019 Tri-State. Our turn comes up in 2020 and it's not too early
to be thinking about a location.

CAR COUNCIL: Robert will not be attending the next meeting as he will be out of
town on Wednesday March 28. It will be an envelope stuffing meeting. They will
feed you if you come out to help. At 6:00 PM at the Old Car Garage.

MERCHANDISE: Jim shared that Vickie is planning a small celebration at our April
4th meeting.

MEMBERSHIP: No new members.

UPCOMING EVENTS

* April 7. Old Route 66 Cleanup 9:00 AM, weather permitting. If it rains or
snows the day before, do not come out on Saturday.

* April 14. Breakfast at Christee's Burgers and More 9:30am. 8600 Indian School,
just past Wyoming, on south side of street just east of Garcia's Kitchen.

* April 21. Spring Thaw at Old Car Garage. Call for an appointment.

* April 22. Cruise and Schmoose at Sonic Drive-In at San Mateo NE 10:00-3:00

* May 20. Albuquerque Museum Car Show

* May 20. Florence Merchants Car Show 9:00-3:00. Florence, CO; southeast of
Canon City, CO. info@florencecoloradocarshow.com or 1-719-659-2053

* June 8-10. Rocky Mountain Corsa Tri-State Rally Group. Hotel: Grand Lodge,
Crested Butte, CO 1-888-443-6715. Booking code 10249

OLD/NEW BUSINESS

* Plans for the Swap Meet in Los Lunas are coming along for this year. Steve
Gongora suggested that Robert suggest to the Car Council that they ask about
holding it at the Wheels Museum site if the Village of Los Lunas stops hosting
  the meet.

* The Vintage Car Club (VMCCA) would like to have another breakfast with CNM.
Dave also mentioned that he had talked to them about a garage tour or an
event. He will continue to pursue this idea.

Adjourned at 5:29 PM and we all drove home in daylight.

THEY DON'T COME OUT AT NIGHT
CNM 44th Anniversary Dinner
Robert Gold

I want to begin this report by first thanking John Wiker for his work to
organize our most recent Anniversary Dinner. The dinner was held at the Golden
Corral on San Mateo. John has found himself with new responsibilities that made
organizing our dinner a near act of heroism. Thanks John!

I have, over the years, made sure to attend this event to celebrate the many
years of CNM. This year I can report that our membership upheld the tradition of
eating plenty of food and enjoying the company of fellow CNM'ers. I'm sure that
all in attendance enjoyed themselves. Of note were the table decorations and
door prizes done by the duo -- Heula Pittman and Vickie Hall. They are
positively brilliant for bringing together gift giving with a Corvair twist.

The attendees were then treated to a spectacle when John Wiker, in his formal
military attire, delivered the plaque that was to be presented to this year's
Ike Meissner Award winner. The joke was on John -- because he is the 2018
recipient of the Ike Meissner award!

Anne Mae Gold presented the Meissner Award plaque to John who then spent some
time visiting with those present. Then it was his turn to present another
plaque: a special appreciation to to Rita and Steve Gongora for the CNM Bingo
Night that was, for many years, hosted by the House of Covers. This is a small
token of appreciation for all the years of support Steve and Rita have done for
the club.

After that presentation John was off to his Junior ROTC Military Ball at Del
Norte High School and the rest of us concentrated on our meals.

Although our Anniversary Dinner party was a success, there was a notable
problem... attendance. An accounting firm was hired to make sure the count was
accurate. The result of the census was 14 CNM'ers. We were not even close to our
normal count of 30. All I can say is, I hope that the lack of attendance can be
traced to the late time of the event. We'll try better next year.

With that, this concludes my report on the dinner.

One more thing -- the prime rib was devine!

-- Robert Gold

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

CNM's 44th ANNIVERSARY -- MARCH 10, 2018
Vickie Hall

Staff at the Golden Corral were very gracious and helpful. They let Pat and me
in shortly after 6:00 PM so that we could decorate the tables with items that
Heula Pittman made.

About 6:30 PM CNM'ers started to trickle in and by about 7:00 PM we realized
that no one else was coming. So we began the party with 12 folks.

John Wiker made a short appearance in order to award Steve and Rita Gongora with
a plaque for their many years of service to CNM, including years of hosting the
Auction/Bingo/Potluck parties at House of Covers. Anne Mae Gold presented the
Ike Meissner Award to John Wiker. Then John had to leave for his ROTC event at
his high school.

With twelve in attendance and twelve door prizes no one went home empty handed.
I was very pleased about how that worked out.

I want to thank all those who donated items for the door prizes.

I hope to see everyone, plus more, at our 45th Anniversary Celebration.

Thank You, Vickie Hall, Merchandise

HAIL TO THE CHIEF! -- February Car Council Report
Robert Gold

I haven't been a regular at Council meetings lately due to health concerns. This
included a Board Meeting and a regular meeting. I assure you my absences were
not because I wouldn't have to write any reports like one. In reality, my work
with the website and newsletter continued. These efforts make Joyce Clements
happy and it is always a good thing to keep Joyce happy and productive.

So this month's meeting was a bit of an emotional effort. I was truly heartened
by the words of support I heard. In contrast, I am improving. In fact, the fact
I was back is a good thing. So enough about me, I'll now turn to the meeting
itself.

When I got to the Old Car Garage, I noticed two things. Number One was the
totally diverse group of attendees at this meeting. By this I mean an odd blend
of regular members and visitors. l really enjoyed the blend.

Jamie called the meeting to order right on time. I should say here that Lube was
there, looking so presidential. He later reported on the Old Route 66 cleanup.
If we get just one more person we'll have enough people to do the pickup. Let's
hope. Then began the introduction of the many visitors. It turned out that most
of those people were a part of one of two groups: Grants Main Street Project and
the Camaro Club. You can go to their websites and see what they're doing. The
Grants celebration sounded like a fun return to happier days. An additional
feature was that one of the Grants folks knows some legislators and will work to
stop House Bill 168 that called for two license plates for New Mexico cars and
trucks. The car hobby is almost completely against such a plan. As one person
who has lived with both configurations, I saw absolutely no improvement in the
rate of car theft. A lot of folks here may have a problem with the hardware
involved. Plus the front plate there just looks lousy, especially for cars that
didn't make any compromise in their design for the license placement.

After the pleasant introductions we headed towards the more routine part of the
meeting.

We began with a well-detailed description of the current financial situation by
Joe Ballengee. I remind everyone that the Council makes most of its operating
expenses trough the Swap Meet. This year's meet is on September 27-30, 2018.

Then in quick succession Joyce talked about the upcoming, May 20, Museum Car
Show. The theme is Vintage Imported Vehicles. Alas, Anne Mae's 2000 Miata
doesn't qualify because it is too new.

We then heard about the progress being made for the Swap Meet. Jamie and Mark
have stepped up to help Joyce. Only... Joyce has quit?!

I think things will work out. It's too good of a time! The March 28, May 16 and
June 27 meetings begin at 6:00 so we can stuff bags and envelopes for the Swap
Meet and Museum car show. You even get fed... after you do the work.

We concluded with the descriptions of many car events. Just hop over to
nmcarcouncil.com and look at a list of all of them, all in one place. With that
we adjourned.

-- Robert Gold

SEVEN YEARS AGO [ APRIL 2018 VOL 44 Nr 4 ISSUE 511 ]
Jim Pittman

2011 Vol 37 Nr 3 # 427

COVER: A photo by Larry Yoffee of Russ McDuffie and his 1965 Corsa Convertible.
President David Huntoon told of making non-running vehicles run again. We
previewed a scrap metal drive. The 37-year Anniversary lunch at JR's Bar-B-Que
went very well. Jim transported new Miata Michelins through snow drifts in the
1990 Civic since the Corvair's accelerator connector failed. Tech articles
discussed fuel pump valves and how they fail. We mourned the loss of Gail Finch,
Richard's wife. Larry Yoffee discussed web pages and how to make them effective.
Our April Fool feature this year was a cleverly photoshopped back page that was
a mirror image of the front page -- almost.

2004 Vol 30 Nr 4 #343

Our Old Route 66 clean-up crew with new safety jackets. Treasurer Wendell
reported $5,405. Sunshine Committee members: Heula Pittman, Anne Mae Gold,
Elizabeth Domzalski, Kim Patten. They mailed sympathy cards to David and Walter
Huntoon. David's mother, Doris, died last month. They sent a card to Lube
Lubert, whose mother died in February. They delivered a plant and food to Ruth
Boydston who is recovering from surgery. Wendy designed and printed greeting
cards. The Awards Committee discussed the Boydston and Meissner awards. We
formed a committee to update the Constitution. Three former members, George
Morin, Dale Housley and Tom Martin, attended the 30th anniversary party. New CNM
lapel pins arrived and will be available for $3.00. The annual CNM campout has
been moved to the first weekend of August up in the Pecos wilderness at Ruth's
cabin. Jim reported on getting a hardtop for the Miata. Steve Goodman provided
tech tips this month. The 30th anniversary party was great and the 2004 Ike
Meissner Award went to Larry Blair.

1997 Vol 23 Nr 4 #259

The cover featured a map of Australia. President Mark ran our meeting. Robert
introduced his brother Alan. LeRoy and Bill provided photos in the March issue.
Wendell reported $7,360 in the bank. Sylvan said new members were Christopher
Burke and Steven Parker. There were upcoming events including the Tri-State
Meet, the Museum car show and other car shows. Worldwide Automotive planned a
"Spring Thaw" where you could get work done on your old car at no charge. At our
board meeting we proposed an amendment to our constitution to require CORSA
membership in order to join CNM. The board also proposed the position of
"Fellowship Chairperson" who would keep the rest of the membership up to date on
the health and welfare of members. Mark provided a tech tip for taking care of
chrome parts: even if the visible surfaces of bumpers and bumper guards look
good, the inside surfaces may need protection against rust. When chrome parts
are removed, treat the non-visible surfaces with Extend and satin black paint to
keep rust at bay. Chuck Vertrees provided an article "Motoring Down Under" based
on his cruise to Australia and New Zealand. Chuck had a number of interesting
observations and anecdotes about driving in these southern countries. I was
disappointed that he didn't mention that the sun comes up the wrong way down
there.

1990 Vol 16 Nr 4 #175

We had four new 1965 Chevrolets on our cover: Chevy II, Corvair, Chevelle and
Impala. President Dale called the March meeting to order; we had $634 in the
bank. Jerry replaced LeRoy as our representative to the Car Council. LeRoy was
recognized for his role as Club auctioneer and was named "Colonel Rogers" and
given a colonel's hat and string tie. Then he conducted our auction. Sylvan
welcomed new member Johnny Silva who had a 1963 convertible. Dale commented on
the 1990 census forms which he had great fun filling out. He was impressed that
his form asked how many Corvairs he had, when he bought them and what they were
used for. Bill's column discussed clutch linkage binding and what to do about
it. Other tech tips told how to keep your glove box latch from sticking, how to
get stuck spark plugs out, how to keep your lifters from rattling, how to keep
your battery from running down, and how to fill out your insurance form. Tom
Martin's La Ventana told us about the automotive career of long-time CNM member
Elliott "Bud" Knapp. Tom also reported on our wine and cheese tasting party at
Sandia Shadows Winery on a rainy day in March. We had a great time despite the
weather.

1983 Vol 9 Nr 4 # 91

Our April Fool cover showed an automotive smorgasbord made up of bits of at
least five different cars; the rear quarter appeared to be from an early
Corvair. This was a classic April Foolish issue with a biography of CNM's latest
member, Tom Joad. (He was played in the movie by Henry Fonda.) A reprint from
Western Pennsylvania told how to get your Corvair's cooling system ready for
spring by flushing the antifreeze and cleaning out the radiator. As a public
service, the revised IRS 1040 form was reprinted in the Newsletter. The editor's
self-referencing editorial drew no comments from readers. Francis was ordering a
batch of reproduction thermostats. Bill told how to stop leaks around the blower
bearing top cover.

1976 Vol 2 Nr 4 # 15

We had forty-one members. We had a new constitution and voted to approve it. We
worried about how to raise money. Mark Morgan, our first newsletter editor,
departed for a tour with the Navy. Glen Thompson took over as Newsletter editor.
We planned a trip to Bandelier National Monument.

April Fools Edition

The Editor assures our readers that ...
    SOUTH COAST CORSA - April 1, 2009
... is only partly responsible for this story:

RELPH NADAR APOLOGIZES
"I'm sorry about everything I said about the Carvair."

Washington D.C. ---

In an unannounced press conference on the steps of the United States Capitol
building, a repentant and tearful 75-year-old Relph Nadar, apologized for his
scathing indictment of the Carvair in his now infamous book Unsafe at Any Speed:

The Designed-In Dangers of the American Automobile (1965, Knightsbridge Pub Co
Mass). Almost inaudible and wiping away tears, Nadar stated "I apologize to
Carvair owners and enthusiasts, and I apologize to General Motors. Forgive me.
I'm sorry about everything I said about the Carvair."

Claiming his past words and actions being a result of "youthful ambition" and
"cavalier injudiciousness," Nadar, in an uncharacteristic mia culpa, asked for
"Forgiveness for any detriments imposed on the Carvair being labeled the
'one-car accident'" by the statements he made in his book. "I was simply wrong.
It's really a great little car. If I knew how to drive and had a driver's
license, I would buy one and restore it. I love the early models."

Usually comfortable in the public eye and in front of a microphone, an obviously
embarrassed Nadar confessed "My entire early career has been built upon a
falsehood."

Nadar revealed a mostly unknown public fact about a two-year study by the
Department of Transportation's National Highway Transportation Safety
Administration that later concluded "The handling and stability performance of
the 1960-1963 Carvair does not result in an abnormal potential for loss of
control or rollover, and it is at least as good as the performance of some
contemporary vehicles both foreign and domestic."

"They were right, I was wrong. There's not much more I can say. I'm sorry."
Nadar stated that he will continue working as a consumer advocate and "do what
he can to rebuild the reputation of the Carvair. I don't know if it is possible,
but I will try." Considering a run for the Presidency in 2020, Nadar stated, "I
will somehow consider the Carvair as an issue in my campaign. I'll do my best
and fight for you."

HAPPY APRIL 15TH!

With April being tax month, I thought I would ask how many of you are aware of a
Beatles' song from the sixties. Do you remember this song?

TAXMAN

If you drive a car,
	I'll tax the street;
If you try to sit,
	I'll tax your seat;
If you get too cold,
	I'll tax the heat;
If you take a walk,
	I'll tax your feet;

I'm the Taxman!

Have a good laugh, but don't forget to pay your taxes.

Vickie Hall, Merchandise

ELEPHANT STEW

1 elephant
Brown gravy
Salt and pepper to taste
2 rabbits

Cut elephant into bite-size pieces (this will take about 4 months). Cook over
kerosene at 525 degrees until tender (about 5 months). Add salt and pepper and
cover with brown gravy. This will serve 3,800 people. If more are expected, add
2 rabbits. Do this if only absolutely necessary as most people do not like to
find hare in their stew.

LAUGHTER BY GEORGE

A social worker from a big city in the North recently transferred to the
mountains of Georgia and was on the first tour of her new territory when she
came upon the tiniest cabin she had ever seen in her life.

Intrigued, she went up and knocked on the door. "Anybody home?" she asked.

"Yep," came a kid's voice through the door.

"Is your father there?" asked the social worker.

"Pa? Nope, he left afore Ma came in," said the kid.

"Well, is your mother there?" persisted the social worker

"Ma? Nope, she left just afore I got here," said the kid.

"But," protested the social worker, "are you never together as a family?"

"Sure, but not here," said the kid through the door, "This is the outhouse!"

THE BAGPIPER

Lay down whatever is bothering you, breathe in the fresh air and listen to this
story. Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow
that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to
play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so
the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I
didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral
director had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.

There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt
badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in
place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my
heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.

I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played
"Amazing Grace," the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept
together.

When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head
was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen
nothing like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty
years."
