AUGUST GENERAL MEETING
Anne Mae Gold

Meeting called to order on Wednesday Aug 01 at 7:03 PM

OFFICER REPORTS:

President (Lube): LeRoy went to the Crested Butte Tri-State. Lube was the only
person from CNM who attended the Florence Merchants' Car Show. There were 12
Corvairs. Aug. 17-18 is the Gunnison Car Show. Lube plans to go.

VP (Art): Unable to attend. Recovering from a medical emergency.

Secretary (Anne Mae): Javier has moved to Madrid, Spain and he is having a
blast!

Treasurer (Robert): current balance is $7,014.34 and there is an outstanding
debt for the Boydston Award but the check is in the mail. It has not yet been
cashed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Editor (Jim): The deadline for the newsletter is Friday August 24 at 9:00 PM.

Car Council (Robert): The NMCCC picnic has been moved to Coronado Camping Area
in Bernalillo. It will be held on August 12 2018 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. There
is a $5 entry fee. Since the Golds will be out of town, Robert asked if another
club member will attend. John Wiker volunteered, thanks John! Plans for the Los
Lunas Swap Meet are moving along.

Membership (Dave): Dave sent out a form to a gentleman (Cole "Mark" Grinstead)
in Alamogordo who is building a modified V-8 Rampside. He is interested in
buying a stock Rampside so people can compare the two.

Merchandise/Sunshine (Vickie & Heula): No merchandise has been sold. Vickie and
Heula are keeping in touch and have begun conversations on CNM's next Tri-State.
It is our turn in 2020. Vickie let us know that Los Lunas has received a grant
to develop a Route 66 museum. Yes, originally Route 66 went through Los Lunas.
She also told us the date that Route 66 was officially ended: June 27, 1985.
Google reveals that five Interstate highways successively replace Route 66: I-55
from Chicago to St. Louis, I-44 to Oklahoma City, I-40 to Barstow, I-15 to San
Bernardino, and I-10 around Los Angeles.

OLD / NEW BUSINESS:

Gunnison Car Show, August 17-19. Gunnison, CO. Lube will be attending.

Elections are coming up in October. Nominations for open positions will be taken
at the September Membership Meeting.

Bingo/Silent Auction: John Wiker is organizing the Bingo night. It is set for
Friday November 9 at Manzano Mesa Multi-Generational Center at the corner of
Southern and Elizabeth. This may change since the City Council has voted that
everyone using a Senior Center or Multi-generational center must be a member.
We are not sure when this policy will commence; maybe before November. More
information will be sent out as soon as our reservation has been confirmed. The
Bingo Party will continue to be a Pot Luck and individual members and families
will be responsible for food, drink and clean up. Individual members will need
to sign up for: ice (Halls), water (Halls), soda (Golds), coffee urn, condiments
for coffee, condiments for food, desserts. Please contact John Wiker at
505-239-3311 with what you will be bringing.

Care and Feeding book: Robert finished updating and formatting the manuscript
and passed it on to Jim, who quickly made corrections and returned it. The next
step is to go to Business Printing and get a quote for printing. How many copies
should we print?

Michael Hemsley is a writer for a digital car magazine called VINTAGE RACECAR.
He is going to write an article about Yenko Stingers. He held a photo shoot
where six or seven Corvairs gathered at Alvarado Park. We do not know when the
article and pictures will appear, so stay tuned.

Tech Talks, Garage Tours: Pat Hall suggests that the club is getting dull and
we need tech sessions and garage tours. He says that he would be happy to host a
Tech event. Just let him know when and what topic interests you. He is going to
balance a flywheel tomorrow and invited all to come and see. Robert says he will
let membership know what is going on down at the Halls' if he knows ahead of
time.

Meeting Changes: We may need to change our meetings. The Senior centers will be
requiring all who use them to be members. Anne Mae will call the City to find
out what is going on. We can't expect all our members and guests to be members
of the Senior Centers, so we won't be able to continue with North Domingo Baca
and Highland. John suggested that we have a once a monthly
breakfast/lunch/dinner meeting in a quiet restaurant where we can actually have
a meeting. Keep your eyes open for places that may have a meeting room we can
use. Robert suggested we contact Galles Chevrolet again to see if they have a
conference room at their new location that we may be able to use. John will
contact them. Ray suggested the Frontier Restaurant on a Saturday at 9:00 AM and
meet in one of the very back rooms. Ray will contact Frontier management. Lube
suggested Copper Canyon Restaurant at 5455 Gibson Blvd SE. They have a room that
can seat up to 50.

Road & Track Article: Each month in Road & Track there is a last-page article by
Bob Lutz. Jim recapped the latest article. Lutz wrote about favorite cars and
said his favorite car was a 1962 Corvair sedan.

Old Route 66 Cleanup: Dave is heading up this Club effort. The next one is
scheduled for Saturday, August 4 at 8:00 AM. Dave reviewed safety information
for the cleanup. Dave and Robert are confirmed but we need three or four more.
Dave has posted information on the Facebook page and Robert has sent out an
email. Dave would like to do four cleanups a year.

The 50/50: tonight's pot was $11 and Robert won. He gave his winnings to the
Sunshine Committee.

Attending Tonight:
Vickie, Pat, LeRoy, John, Ray, Anne Mae, Robert, Lube, David, Gordon, Lesha, Jim
for 12 members total.

The AUGUST BOARD MEETING was conducted via email. These three articles by John
Wiker cover upcoming items of Club business:

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

(1) BINGO PARTY UPDATE
    John Wiker

I checked with the general manager of the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center
to make sure we could have our Bingo party there on Friday November 9 at 4:30 PM
without everyone having to buy a membership. He confirmed that only the host had
to have membership and everyone else could enter as a one-time event. Of course
he said that was his finding as of today, August 9th, but I should check back in
October. By the way, the person I made the reservation with was relieved of
duty, so tomorrow (Friday 10 August) I will meet with his replacement to make
sure we are in.

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

(2) BINGO PARTY PLANNING
    John Wiker

It's never too early for a successful plan.
When: Friday, November 9th.
Where: Manzano Mesa Multi-Generational Center, 501 Elizabeth St SE, Albuquerque,
NM 87123. That is the corner of Elizabeth and Southern, east of Eubank SE and
south of Southern SE.
Setup: We will start setting up at 4:30 PM
Food, Silent Auction, Bingo: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Cleanup: we need to finish and be gone by 8:30 PM.

At the August meeting several members agreed to bring items that were in
previous years provided by the Gongoras at House of Covers.

Plates, napkins, silverware -- the Wikers
Cold Sodas -- The Golds
Cold water -- The Halls
Coffee urn and coffee, sugar, cream -- volunteer still needed.

Please volunteer and call John at 239-3311 if you can provide them.

Don't forget your favorite foods: meat, veggies, potatoes, desserts. Start
collecting those white elephants for the auction now! Please bring lots of
dollar bills because change will be hard to come by that night.

See you there for a great evening!!!

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

(3) ALTERNATE MEETING PLACE
    John Wiker

Albuquerque Senior Center policies are about to change and in the near future it
will be necessary for everyone attending a meeting to check in, and to be a
member of the Senior Center. We are therefore looking at alternate places for
our monthly meetings. We don't want everyone who attends our meetings to have to
buy a membership. I met the head salesman at Galles Chevrolet and we discussed
the possibility that we could return to Galles as our meeting place. He was
glad, because the manager had asked that the dealership do something for the
community. So far, the Camaro club has returned, we would be next and finally,
the Corvettes would come around. All I have to do is email the boss with the
request so he can finalize the calendar. Two things to be aware of: we have to
move our time to 6:00 PM, and the room is smaller than we are used to. But, it
has 22 chairs in it and the Camaro club has two wheelchair members who attend.
So I think we can put up with these differences in order to have a consistent
place to meet. We may be able to help Galles with their community service needs.
The new location for Galles Chevrolet is: 2801 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque,
NM 87107, just south of Candelaria.

We are putting out this message to all members so we can get their opinion
before we sign on with Galles Chevrolet for the club.

BUSY CORVAIR WEEKEND
John Wiker

Saturday, 11 August, I traveled to the metropolis of Estancia to participate in
the Torrence County Fair. The day started with a parade around town with about
thirty cars and five floats. As we went through town, I noticed that wrapped
candy was being thrown out windows to kids and adults along the route. When we
got to the park for the car show, there were more cars: fifty-five were
registered in twenty categories. I was in the 1965-1970 class. There were five
of us: 1965 Impala (looked like new), 1965 Rambler (looked like Lube's great
white hope), 1967 Pontiac Tempest, 1967 F85, and my Corvair. There was one prize
for each class. Of course the Impala won for us. No complaints. As I was setting
up, a 1961 red and white Rampside drove by. I waved him down and made room for
him next to me so people could see two different versions of Corvair. I gave him
a business card from the club and asked him to consider joining. He said he was
not much of a club person. Name was Hulbert Kiefing I think. Beside the Rampside
he owns a 1964 Spyder. After the show I got home and into the garage just before
the storm hit. New people are moving into a house a block north of us and they
unloaded a Corvair from a trailer. Tomorrow, when I return from the Car Council
Picnic I'll stop and introduce myself.

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

CAR COUNCIL PICNIC
John Wiker

Sunday: No luck, he was not at home and I could not leave a note. Got to the
picnic at 09:00 and iced down the water. By about 10:00 it became obvious that
there was insufficient parking space and I needed to put my Balloon Parking
experience to use. We ended up with 101 classics and a few normal cars parked in
a space for 70. Had to park two deep with just enough room to get one car out.
Talked to both drivers so they knew each other and agreed to move for each other
so they could get out. There was one pavilion large enough to hold the food and
they could only handle one line at a time instead of the usual two. It took me
about 30 minutes to get through the line. Then it was back to parking duty.
Talked to the Corvette club about Galles and gave them the contact information.
They were tired of Domingo Baca too.

We had good representation from our club. Dave Huntoon, Pat & Vickie Hall, Lube
Lubert and his brother, myself and Bob Fitts, a member of the Corvette Club as
well as ours. Most people I talked with were hoping that this was a one-time
affair and that we would return to Oak Flat next year.

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

CAR COUNCIL PICNIC
Vickie Hall

Sunday August 12th was the day for the NMCCC all clubs picnic at Coronado
Camping Area in Bernalillo, and what a great day it was.

The classic vehicles overfilled the parking area with a fantastic array of
exciting, unusual and special cars of the past. I was told the total classic
vehicle count was 101. Pat & I arrived in comfort in our classic 2016 Hundai
Alantra.

The food was good and was plentiful, so if anyone left hungry it's their own
fault. The only thing that was missing was mayonnaise for my hamburger.

Representing CNM were Lube Lubert and brother Bill, John Wiker, Dave Huntoon,
Bob Kitts in his 1953 Corvette instead of his Corvair and Pat and Vickie Hall.
There were three CNM Corvairs and two X-brands.

If anyone should ask me what was my favorite car that I saw at the picnic, I
would say the 1963 Studebaker Avanti. It was gorgeous and I think I'm in love!

The day ended with the 50/50, door prize and donated items drawings.

This was a perfect weather day for all who attended.

Enjoy the rest of Summer and be safe.

Vickie Hall, CNM Merchandise Chair

HURLEY WILVERT DIED MONDAY AUGUST 13TH.

Brenda's sister in Tijeras told us that there was a motorcycle accident a short
distance from his home last week, and he was badly injured, taken to the
hospital, and died on Monday. Brenda requested that Corvair members be notified.
We think it would be nice if we could drive Corvairs to the service.

HURLEY WILVERT
DAVID HUNTOON

We lost another member last week. Hurley Wilvert, a member since 1992, died in a
weekend road accident Monday afternoon. Hurley was a mechanic turned road racer
for the Kawasaki factory team in the 1970s. He finished on the podium at the '74
Daytona 200 behind Kenny Roberts and Giacomo Agostini. He continued to build and
club race through out his life. Recently he completed some parade laps at the
Isle of Man. A good guy and long-time Corvair enthusiast, RIP Hurley....

HURLEY WILVERT
ROBERT GOLD

Here is the information we have on the services for Hurley Wilvert. I know for
me, his passing takes away a person I loved talking to at our events.

He had quite a life and his stories were captivating. His description of
motorcycle racing in the Baja at night was something to hear.

HURLEY WILVERT SERVICE
VICKIE HALL

Hurley Wilvert's Memorial Service overflowed the Church with family and friends.

His life was talked about with fond memories of his racing and engineering
careers.

Corvairs were also a part of his life and to show our condolences twelve CNM
members and five Corvairs arrived at the Church.

An excerpt from "A Message from the Family"...

Hurley Wilvert March 11, 1944 - August 13, 2018

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======

Hurley and Brenda joined CNM in 1992. Hurley was elected CNM President in
1999 and served two terms. Hurley and Brenda have been strong members of our
club for all these years including being super hospitality hosts at Tri-State
events. Hurley's loss will leave a huge gap in our club.
Here are two articles he wrote for us, in 1999 and in 2004.

ENCHANTED CORVAIRS NEWSLETTER -- NOVEMBER 1999
FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT
Hurley Wilvert

I want to thank all of you for electing me president, and I thank you all for
your support. I hope to keep CNM going into Y2K without a misfire... I include a
profile of myself ... that might help some of the members get to know me better.
I think it would be a good thing for us to do a similar article on one member a
month. It would help us get to know each other better.

I grew up as an army brat. I lived in Pensylvania, Japan, Ohio, Virginia, France
and Kentucky all before I graduated from high school.

I started college immediately after high school, but I didn't graduate until I
was 44 years old. I had other things I wanted to do. I moved to California when
I was 21. There I learned about motorcycle racing.

I road raced motorcycles for over 10 years, starting in local club races and
eventually competing and finishing well in world championship events. I raced in
the US, Europe, South America, Australia and Indonesia. I eventually got too old
for that and had to get a day job. I worked for Kawasaki Motors Corp. for 8
years as a service representative. I went on to work for Yamaha Motors Corp. as
a golf car marketing engineer. It was then that I decided to finish college, and
I went back to school at Long Beach. It was during my employment at Kawasaki
that I first visited Albuquerque. I came here to teach a seminar in 1980. I went
skiing the next day at Sandia Peak and loved it. I wished then that I could live
in the East Mountains, if only I could find a job. It was also at Kawasaki that
I met my wife, Brenda. It was while I was going to school at Long Beach that our
son was born, and our twin daughters were born, during my second year with FM
Global.

When I graduated, I was looking for a job that would get me out of California.
The place had gotten too crowded for me, or perhaps I had gotten too old for it.
I took my present job knowing that it would give me that opportunity. It did,
and I moved here in 1991.

My job has me evaluating industrial and commercial properties from an insurance
risk standpoint. I report to the company on the risk and try to get the facility
people to make improvements, if needed, and they usually are. I'm an inspector
of sorts, just the guy people want to see coming.

My first Corvair was a 1960 500 Coupe, 80 hp, 3 speed. My dad bought it for me
when I graduated from high school and I loved it. Unfortunately, it got the
flywheel rattle and I got hit by someone pulling out of a side street, so my dad
sold it, thinking that I was driving irresponsibly. I soon got enough money to
buy my own, a 1961 Monza 98 hp, 4 speed, the same color as the one I drive now.
I really, really, loved that car. I almost bought a 1965 when they first came
out but I tricked myself into buying a Falcon V8 instead when positraction was
backordered. What a mistake! It was not until I moved to New Mexico that I again
bought a Corvair, my 1968. Of course you can't just own one, so I bought the
1961. I'd like to buy more but I have no room for them.

OUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE
MY FIRST CAR
Hurley Wilvert

My first car was a beautiful 1960, turquoise blue, 500 coupe, 80 hp three speed
manual shift Chevrolet Corvair. I didn't choose it, my father did. I had wanted
a car so badly in high school and now I was going to college and I needed a car.
I think I had told my father about Corvairs, the economical, not too fast, small
car that Chevrolet had just come out with, but I didn't think he would ever buy
me one. I suppose it was because we had a Chevrolet at the time, I don't really
know. I didn't know he bought it until I came home one day and it was sitting in
front of the house. I could hardly wait to drive it and when I did it was all
that I had expected and more. Even though it was only 80 hp and a three-speed,
it was GREAT!

I loved that car and drove it everywhere until one day I went to pick up a
friend. We were headed somewhere and I decided to change lanes. I failed to
notice the guy in the station wagon on the side road waiting to pull out. I
moved to the right just as he pulled out and he hit the right rear quarter
panel. My dad wouldn't believe that it was not all my fault. He had the body
damage fixed and shortly thereafter the rivets on the flywheel started to loosen
and rattle. Dad took it to the dealer who replaced the flywheel, at my father's
expense, telling him it came from "Jackrabbit" starts. How can you do
"Jackrabbit" starts with an 80 hp motor in a rear wheel drive car? Well that was
it. Dad sold the "Sports Car" and bought me a 1953 Chevrolet four-door, but
that's another story.

NEITHER RAIN NOR.... AUGUST CAR COUNCIL REPORT
Robert Gold

In my previous life as a scientist I was paid to study things like the monsoonal
rains we've been experiencing lately. My title was hydrologist (water expert).
Well my past came rushing back to me the evening of the latest Car Council
meeting. I sat and watched the weather guy on TV tell me that the rains heading
our way were going to be so heavy that he suggested his viewers stay home and
wait for the rains to pass. That was at 6:30 and I usually leave for the Council
meeting at 7:00. This was not good. However, being your dedicated rep I fired up
my Dodge Magnum and headed out

I figured not many other folks would be there. I was wrong. It turned out
attendance was actually good that night. By the way, the rains weren't all that
bad.

The meeting itself was uneventful. We didn't have a treasurer's report, because,
alas, our treasurer didn't make it. Neither did the secretary, but we carried on
anyway. After the introduction of two individuals not affiliated with a car
club, our president thanked everyone who showed up for the All Clubs Picnic.
Everyone agreed that the event, held at the Coronado Picnic Grounds, was a
whopping success. The only criticism was there was not enough parking. We were
assured that the parking situation would be corrected next year when we would
return to that site. Everyone agreed that the rest rooms were stellar.

Joyce Clements then let the people know that the September swap meet was moving
along fine. Out of about 400 spaces available, over 300 had already been sold. A
signup sheet was circulated for volunteers. Joyce singled out CNM and thanked us
for our continued support of the event. The Golds, along with John Wiker, Lube,
and Pat Hall should be there as usual. I do want to thank you guys for making us
look good! I would encourage all you CNM'ers to travel down to Los Lunas for all
the fun.

Jamie then gave a report about the Council elections. She didn't say anything
about them being a year late. However, she did note that we were looking for a
new treasurer and possibly a new Board member. I'm not sure when we will
actually hold elections, but when they happen I'm confident I'll still by the
VP. I'll be sure to let you know how things turn out.

With that, we talked about several upcoming car events, and then the meeting was
adjourned. When I left the overheated meeting room the rain had stopped and the
evening had turned out to be delightfully pleasant. Talk to you next month.

OLD ROUTE 66 CLEANUP
David Huntoon

For our third cleanup of the year we had a nice surprise: a crew of seven. It
has been a while for that nice a turnout. The weather was good with little or no
wind. We ended up with 12 bags of trash that we took to the transfer station. A
big thanks to all who showed up. Larry, Lube, Tony, Linda, Dave, Robert and I.
The next cleanup will be in October and will be the last for 2018. All are
welcome to come and join the fun!

DAVE AND MIKE'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
Dave Allin

Mike Hemsley is a writer/photographer for Vintage Road Car magazine, and we met
a few years ago at the Santa Fe Concorso. We get together every year or so to do
car stuff, and I also build model cars for him. Three years ago he wrangled
press credentials for me at the Amelia Island Concours, and we had a great time
photographing the cars and going to the auctions. We also visited a number of
Florida auto museums, and at the Tampa Bay museum, which I highly recommend,
Mike drove and photographed a 1930's Panhard Dynamic sedan.

Last year Mike came to Albuquerque to profile three local cars: a Citroen SM, a
Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato, and a 1936 De Soto Airflow. From here we went to
Denver to profile several Studebakers owned by a friend of mine, and
photographed and drove a couple of Lotus Elans in Colorado Springs. Then we went
to Oklahoma City to view a private collection of fabulous brass-era cars.

This year Mike invited me to Tennessee, where he now lives. I flew into
Nashville and he met me at the airport. The next day we went to the Lane Motor
Museum there in Nashville, and that is one of the most interesting places I've
ever been. Several episodes of Jay Leno's Garage have been filmed there. Jeff
Lane has a huge collection of what can only be described as odd-ball cars, along
with odd bicycles and motor scooters. Many of Lane's cars are one-offs or cars
with very low production numbers, and he also has a lot of micro-cars. After
viewing the approximately 150 cars on the main floor, Mike arranged for a
private tour of the basement, where Lane has another 300 or so cars, some
awaiting restoration, others just not in the current rotation.

On the main floor of the museum is the Corphibian, and amphibious version of a
1961 Corvair Loadside pickup. Two Chevrolet engineers developed it outside the
company in the hope that Chevy would produce it, but GM declined. The marine
controls are located in the bed, and are operated from the two deck chairs
mounted there. It looks somewhat more practical than the Amphicar, but I'm not
sure how much of a market there would have been for it. In the basement of the
museum is a fully-restored 1962 Lakewood wagon, awaiting its chance to be
displayed upstairs.

From there we went to the Corvette museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. If you are
really interested in Corvettes, it is a nice museum, but I'm not. The hole in
the floor has been repaired, but the cars that fell in are displayed just as
they were when they were pulled out -- smashed and covered in mud.

Next we drove to Elizabethtown, Kentucky, to visit my daughter. While there we
went to a small local car museum owned by the man who owns virtually all the car
dealerships in town. It was nice, and had some moderately interesting cars, but
no Corvairs. After that we went to Lexington for the Keeneland Concours, which
is held at a very nice country club. The main attraction, of course, were the
classic cars from the thirties, some of which were spectacular, but the Concours
also invites local car clubs to gather on the periphery, and the Corvair guys
were there in force. Among others, they brought a beautiful Corsa coupe and a
show-quality Rampside. One guy brought his daily-driver 1967 Coupe with
air-conditioning. He said he's driven it in 40 states so far, and hopes to
eventually get to the other eight, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.

The next few days we spent at Mike's home in Chattanooga, where we visited the
Coker Tires Auto Museum, with its fabulous collection of restored and unrestored
brass-era cars and beautifully restored antique motorcycles. We also went to the
International Towing and Recovery Museum, where we saw lots of tow trucks,
including the world's largest and the world's smallest. If you really like tow
trucks....

We drove back to Albuquerque, where Mike photographed a number of Corvairs from
our club, for an article he is planning on the history of Corvairs. We also
photographed and drove some local classics, including a 1954 Arnolt Bristol, a
1957 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk III, and a 1935 Auburn Phaeton. While I recovered
from the surfeit of automotive beauty, Mike left for Seattle, where he attended
the Alfa Romeo Owners Club convention and profiled a pre-war Alfa. Next he is
going to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where a guy has four Yenko Stingers he wants Mike
to photograph. Mike promised to send me photos of the Stingers. All in all, it
was a wonderful road trip that was all about cars, and something I really
enjoyed.

BIRTHDAY CARDS
Heula Pittman

For years, as part of the activities of the Sunshine Committee, I have been
printing and mailing out birthday cards to CNM members. These are not just
typical generic "Happy Birthday" cards from Hallmark. They are custom designed
each year and individually printed and addressed to each member.

Your Birthday card is unique every year. If you are a CNM member and have not
been getting your Happy Birthday card, it's because we don't have your
birthdate. The photo above shows two months worth of freshly printed cards. At
the left and below are some of the designs we have used over the years. We also
publish birthdates and anniversary dates in the newsletter -- as in the box to
the right.

SEVEN YEARS AGO [ SEPTEMBER 2018 VOL 44 Nr 9 ISSUE 516 ]
Jim Pittman

2011 Vol 37 Nr 9 # 432

On the cover two Corvairs are polished up for the 1989 Red River Tri-State.
Inside, we admire an early convertible with 14" Datsun 240Z wheels. To avoid
"burnout" we needed volunteers for the October election. David Huntoon, Vickie &
Pat Hall and Kay Sutt reported on the 2011 CORSA Convention in Denver where they
had a "Rocky Mountain High" of a great time. Yes, Tarmo's 1966 turbo convertible
was a star.

2004 Vol 30 Nr 9 #348

Cover: members brought their Corvairs to a show at Galles Chevrolet. Bernie
Urbassik was a guest and was restoring a Corvair. Wendell reported $2,403. New
members were Tom & Cathy Bunter and Dan Clifford. Del & Dave said they learned
at the convention that a modern Crown kit was now available to install a V-8 at
a cost of only $8000 without the V-8. Flaming River was manufacturing new
steering boxes. Anne Mae reported on the CNM Ladies group who had a great time
at Ruth's cabin in the Pecos. Heula reported on the progressive dinner hosted by
the Sullivan, Johnson and Gold families. An e-mail received from the Swiss
Corvair Club was reprinted, courtesy of Charley Biddle of Chicago. The club had
46 members with 12 to 16 Corvairs at club events. Their web page:
http://corvair.ch/

We reprinted tech tips from Steve Goodman featuring engines running on five
cylinders. One had the top of the piston broken off so the piston skirt just
moved uselessly up and down. The other engine had a connecting rod was broken
off right at the crank. More tips: Polish clean window glass with a newspaper.
Clean a carpet with a wad of duct tape.

1997 Vol 23 Nr 9 #264

Cover: a photo of the Very Large Array radio telescope near Magdalena. We had a
great tour to the VLA in July. President Mark Domzalski was now working at Los
Alamos. Francis Boydston was reported to be very ill. Greg and Judy Armstrong
visited. Tom Berg from Wagner Brakes gave a tech talk. Wendell reported
$7,913.25. We looked forward to an August picnic, a September swap meet and a
September "Un-Fair" car show. We discussed county zoning laws and whether your
old car might be towed away. Cleaning up Old Route 66 was a chance to clear out
your rat-race-rotted brain by doing mindless work near Mother Nature. People on
bicycles occasionally call out "Thanks" to us. Mark said we had printed our
convention reports to send to clubs requesting them. Kay and Tarmo were planning
our next Tri-State. Mark's tech tip told about finally finding and fixing a
water leak around the windshield of his Rampside.

1990 Vol 16 Nr 9 #180

The cover featured an ad for a 1965 sedan -- printed in Spanish. We had $705. A
visitor was Woody Souza, visiting Clayborne and Karen. Francis Boydston gave a
show-and-tell about a worn and chipped bronze distributor drive gear. Dale
Housley thanked the membership for our support as president. He wasn't running
again. Tarmo Sutt previewed the Aspencade to Hyde Park and the Santa Fe National
Forest. LeRoy Rogers previewed our trip to Trinity Site in October. We previewed
next year's Tri-State Meet at Gunnison, Colorado. Sylvan Zuercher reported on
Dick Cochran's Econo-run and picnic to Grants and the Mine Museum.
An article by Orville Eliason from the San Diego newsletter told why cylinder
heads aren't cooling properly and a few things to do about it.

1983 Vol 9 Nr 9 # 96

Cover: a locomotive from the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Jim reported on a
great CNM overnight trip. Only four people (two Corvairs) went but they had a
terrific train ride. LeRoy reported on the 1983 CORSA convention in Seattle. CNM
petitioned the CORSA board for the 1987 convention but Utah got it. Warren
McKinley from Wagner Brakes made a fine talk on brake systems. A tech tip warned
about problems with excessive fuel pump pressure.

1976 Vol 2 Nr 9 # 19

Editor Glen Thompson told about his hectic summer. He drove to Dayton in his
newly rebuilt 1962 FC pickup. An article by Bob Helt from the Phoenix FANBELT
FLYER told about the charges Ralph made against the Corvair and how the
Corvair's handling was exonerated by government tests. An article by Ike
Meissner gave tips about the sense and nonsense of keeping your Corvair running
properly. This was the article with the quote "Blessed are those with the
Corvair hobby -- for they shall be allowed to get dirty".
