I grew up in Oklahoma, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a useless degree in psychology. Upon graduation I was drafted into the Army and sent to Viet Nam as an infantryman, where I was awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. When I returned from Viet Nam I got out of the Army, got married, had a daughter, and moved to Denver to work for 7-Eleven. After three years I decided to rejoin the Army and was trained as a Russian linguist for military intelligence. I retired from the Army in 1990 (and got divorced), and my daughter and I returned to Oklahoma, where I took a job with the state health department. I met and married my current and forever wife, Jan, and after a few years we moved to San Diego so I could take a job with United Healthcare. In 2010, looking forward to retirement, we decided to move to Albuquerque, which had a lower cost of living and an attractive lack of natural disasters. After I retired from United, I began publishing books on Amazon, and those royalties have provided me with the discretionary funds I needed to buy a Corvair. I've always been a car guy, and have been building model cars since 1958. My first real car was a 1962 Fiat 500 that my brother gave me (with malice aforethought), saying that if I could get it running, I could have it. I did, and I could keep it running for up to two weeks at a time, before the engine finally locked up. My first Corvair was a 1962 Monza coupe, dark red with a gold interior, and I loved that car. But after two years I wanted a change, and traded it off. I always regretted that. In 1972 I briefly owned a 1962 Lakewood with serious rust problems. Once I retired, I knew that I wanted a collector car, and I knew it had to be a Corvair. For some reason I have always had an affinity for rear-engined cars. In addition to the Fiat and the two Corvairs, I have owned a VW Beetle convertible, a Renault R-10, A VW camper van, a VW 411, and a Porsche Speedster. In looking back at all the cars I owned, however, the ones I most enjoyed were the Corvairs. As your President I hope to reinvigorate the club, making it more accessible and more enjoyable. I believe we need to bring back some of our lapsed members, and more importantly, bring in new members. We can do that by increasing our presence in the community and expanding our activities to include more people, and not just club members. The hard part, of course, will be bringing in younger people, who don't remember the Corvair, and, it seems, are not as interested in cars in general as we are. I think we have an advantage over other makes, though, because the Corvair is very different from other cars of the era, is still relatively inexpensive to own and operate, and has one of the best club organizations and parts supply there is. And frankly, the Corvair is better looking than other old cars. Old Falcons and Valiants look stodgy and dull in comparison, and Mustangs are a dime a dozen. Let's celebrate our uniqueness. The Christmas party was a huge success, and I want to thank Vickie and Heula for all the work they did to make it a fun occasion. Even my wife, who isn't into cars and was dubious about attending, had a great time and really appreciated the hospitality and friendship that was extended to her. I hope I can convince her to attend all our meetings and events. I also want to thank Kay Sutt for offering her spectacular Ruth Boydston Corvair quilt to the club, and I think it should be in a place of honor at all our events. To sum up, I am pleased and proud to be the newest president of the club, and I vow to do everything I can to make it even more fun and educational than it already is. -- David Allin ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== MINUTES OF REGULAR CLUB MEETING - DECEMBER 5, 2018 Kay Sutt The regular club meeting was called to order at 5:30 P.M. at Galles Chevrolet by newsletter chair Jim Pittman. Twenty-one club members were present. The first order of business was to elect new officers due to the resignations of the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. At a special meeting held last week it was agreed to send letters of acceptance of the resignations to the Golds (Art/President, Robert/Treasurer and Anne Mae/Secretary). John Wiker's resignation was verbally accepted at that special meeting, as he was present. At the special meeting the following people offered to serve the remainder of this year as CNM officers: President ... David Allin Vice-president ... David Huntoon Sharing Secretary ... Linda Soukup & Kay Sutt Treasurer ... Steve Gongora Nominations from the floor of the current membership meeting brought forth no additional candidates for the offices, and the membership voted five people named above into office unanimously. After the election David Allin took over as the meeting chair. Mr. Allin indicated, for now, his Board of Directors will include the five officers and the newsletter chair, Jim Pittman. The following people will serve as committee chairpersons: Membership ... David Huntoon Merchandise ... Vickie Hall Sunshine ... Heula Pittman Newsletter ... Jim Pittman Old Route 66 ... David Huntoon Car Council Rep ... David Allin The next discussion was the possibility of changing the membership and the BoD meeting times because numerous members indicated they would prefer a daytime meeting because driving at night has become increasingly difficult. This action would require changing the meeting day to a weekend so members still working could attend. Because of that proposed change the following amendment to the Constitution (Section IV. Meetings) is required: From: 1. CNM Membership meetings shall be held on the first Wednesday of each calendar month at a time and place designated by the BoD. 2. CNM BoD meetings shall be held the third Wednesday of each calendar month at a time and place designated by the BoD. To: 1. CNM Membership meetings will be held once each calendar month at a date, time and location approved by a majority vote of the membership. 2. CNM BoD meetings will be held at a date, time and location approved by a majority vote of the BoD. It was moved and seconded the amendment be approved, and after discussion, the amendment was approved by a majority of members present. Members were assured they were still welcome at the BoD meetings. Discussion of searching out a new meeting place was next due to space and time limitations at Galles Chevrolet. Highlands Senior Center contacted Ray Trujillo indicating we could still have the first Wednesday evening meeting time without all attendees being members of the Center. David Allin indicated the Old Car Garage is available three Sundays a month, at a cost of $35 per meeting. Annie's Soup Kitchen indicated they are available on Saturdays; the time the rear meeting room of the restaurant is available will have to be confirmed, since they are especially busy for breakfast until about 10 A.M. and they close at 2 P.M. Car Crafters is to be checked out as a possibility too; they host some other car groups. Several members are checking on these, and other, possibilities and will report back to the membership before a decision is made. In the meanwhile, meetings will continue at Galles Chevrolet, at the same time as they have been in the past. Also as a result of discussion at the special meeting last week Linda and Kay prepared drafts of a survey to be mailed to members regarding their preferences, concerns and ideas for the future of CNM. The two drafts will be combined into one and approved for distribution to the membership at a quick meeting of the BoD at the Christmas Party. The intent of this survey is to increase membership interest and attendance at Club events. Therefore, it is important for members to take the time to answer and return their surveys. Since the results of the survey are important to the future functioning of the new BoD (and won't be available in time), and because of the Holiday season, the BoD meeting for December has been cancelled. There was discussion if membership meetings should follow Robert's Rules of Order, or be more informal, since some members have complained meetings are slow and boring when following Robert's Rules. Generally conduct of the meetings is at the discretion of the President, and after some discussion, this discussion was tabled for future consideration. The New Mexico Council of Car Clubs (NMCCC) is seeking a new location for their 2019 Swap Meet. They have lost the Los Lunas space. Moving the meet to Albuquerque was preferred by CNM members present and the Isleta concert venue was offered as a possible suggestion to the NMCCC. The 2019 Tri-State Meet is in a state of flux at this time, and it will most likely not be in Ouray, based on discussion with Pikes Peak Corvair Club, so don't make your hotel reservations just yet. More info will be forwarded to members when it is received from PPCC. The "Care and Feeding" CNM book given to new members was being revised by Robert Gold. Jim Pittman indicated he thought the revisions were nearing completion. A new printing is needed since we only have about 10 copies left. The amendment to the Constitution, discussed above, will need to be inserted into the book. Since Robert was not at the meeting, further discussion was tabled until Robert could be consulted. Steve Gongora indicated he would get the President's briefcase for David Allin from Art Gold. It includes the official seal & other items needed by CNM. Terry Price indicated he had the Tri-State briefcase and will hold it until plans for the 2020 Tri-State are formalized next year. Steve Gongora will make arrangements with Robert Gold for transfer of the CNM treasurer's records, and he will work with Robert to ensure Wells Fargo is notified of the change and that signatory cards are appropriately filed with the bank. Because the approved meeting minutes of the election meeting may be required by the bank to allow the changes, the meeting minutes will be read and approved at the Christmas party. The 50/50 netted $16.50 for Bob Kitts and CNM, each. Finally, everyone is reminded the Christmas Party is this Saturday, December 8, from 2-4 P.M. at Copper Canyon Restaurant, at the corner of Gibson and Valencia SE. Remember to bring your donations for this year's charity - The Storehouse. The meeting was adjourned at 6:35. Minutes were adopted, as read, by CNM membership at Christmas Party, 12/08/2018 at Copper Canyon Cafe, Albuquerque. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== DECEMBER BOARD MEETING CANCELLED --- CONDUCT ANY BUSINESS BY EMAIL OR PHONE ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Happy Birthday Wishes to January CNM'ers: Jenny Finch - Javier Gold - Steve Gongora - Carolyn Palmer - LeRoy Rogers January Anniversaries: Vickie & Pat Hall ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== 2018 CNM CHRISTMAS PARTY Kay Sutt A total of 29 people attended the 2018 CNM Christmas party, held Saturday, December 8 at Copper Canyon Restaurant from 2 to 4 P.M. Lots of greetings among old friends, and introductions to several new friends began this party. As we were arriving some of us got the chance to say hello to Dale Housley, a past CNM member who was having lunch with his family; he looks great and wished everyone in CNM a Happy Holiday. Heula Pittman and Vickie Hall, as usual, worked their little hearts out to make "goodie" bags and have door prize items for the get-together (Vickie is a wicked MC, with a couple of Corvair questions even the most knowledgeable CNM'ers couldn't answer!). The food was tasty and plentiful, the service was good, and the little model car decorations reminded everyone we are a club of car enthusiasts. People donated a variety of items for this year's charity, The Storehouse. Vickie took charge of those to be delivered to the charity before Christmas. Thanks to everyone who came. I certainly had a good time, and I hope you did too. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All! May 2019 be the best year yet for CNM! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== CORVAIRS OF NEW MEXICO = POSSIBLE CLUB EVENTS Larry Blair Albuquerque and New Mexico have a wealth of things to see and places to go. We had permission from North Domingo Baca to continue meeting there through 2012. We called for more tech talks about our cars. Thirty-seven people attended the Christmas dinner at Roper's Restaurant. Jim recommended Miata Specialists for alignments. Alas, Miata Specialists are no more, but Keith is still here, at 828 Arno NE. Heula wrote a tribute to Ruth Goodman of Denver who passed away in December. David Huntoon told of his dad's trip by car to the Worlds Fair in New York in 1940. What do you know about Corvair valve rocker ratios and their importance? Bob Helt told us. We said R.I.P. to Saab, 1956-2011. Jim previewed the CNM newsletter CD project which made a few bucks for the club before being discontinued. Our December member list showed 48 active CNM families. 2005 V.31 Nr 1 # 352 COVER: Richard Finch's Ultra Van with a Roswell flying saucer. Guests were Mark's father and Wendell's son. We had $3315 in the treasury. We planned a car show for April at Sonic. New shirts arrived. The Christmas dinner, held at Kirtland AFB Officers' Club, was enjoyed by all: 35 adults, 2 children. Richard & Gayle offered guided tours of their Ultra Van. A club breakfast was held at the Cracker Barrel: 7 members. Mark & Mary Lou & Mark Martinek sent a letter from Vancouver telling about their visit to the St. Helen volcano and their attempts to find a local Corvair club. Del Patten went to the 2004 Fan Belt Toss and all he got was a T-shirt, but what we got was an article reporting on it. Steve Goodman reminded us of the Tri-State coming up in Ouray. And he told a true story about the man who had a 4-cylinder Corvair. Well, you just have to read the story. Finally, the annual membership list totaled fifty-six families. 1998 V.24 Nr 1 # 268 COVER: A fearless Corvair plowed through snow. Early models' gas heaters came in for Billiken's praise. President Dennis ran the December meeting. Mark, Clayborne and Dennis reported on a great Fan Belt Toss. Tarmo was working on next year's Tri-State in Lake City, Colorado. We were getting a club "banner" for display at events. To honor Francis, we planned to install a flagpole at the Boydston cabin as soon as weather permitted. The treasury totalled $7,561. We discussed investment strategies. We reviewed our Meissner and Boydston awards and decided to present the Boydston Award at our Tri-State event each year. There was some discussion about pros and cons of expanding the Tri-State to include Arizona and/or Utah. The Christmas dinner at the Four Hills Cafe was a great success. Jim and Heula reported on their Thanksgiving trip to Baton Rouge and the exciting drive from Encino to Clines Corners in a blizzard. An article from Seth Emerson discussed the long-term effects of Nader's "UNSAFE" book on the automobile industry. He blamed it for the "sue 'em" mentality pervasive today. The issue had two recipes, two letters about Francis' death and the annual member list which held 58 member addresses. 1991 V.17 Nr 1 # 184 COVER: A Spyder convertible. President Steve encouraged us to keep our Corvairs shined and running and asked for volunteers for the year's activities. Wendell reported $807 in the bank. Will Davis said the Christmas dinner speaker would be Harry S Truman. Bill Reider reported that we needed new CNM front license plates and we ordered fifty. Show-and-tell items included a CR bellhousing seal missing its rubber sealer, a leak around the stud that holds the motor mount plate, and a set of nylon strut rod bushings. This led to a discussion on the good and bad qualities of nylon suspension bushings. Articles included a report by Rita on our Christmas dinner. Your editor wrote about the history and meaning of the Ike Meissner Award. Tech tips: Replacing window glass; Fuel tank rust; Baking paint onto bolts; Bleeding master brake cylinders; Ground straps on engine sheet metal; Weatherstrip removal; Steering wheel play. Our membership totaled 62 members. 1984 V.10 Nr 1 # 100 The new mid-engine Pontiac Fiero was on the cover. Was the Fiero a worthy successor to the Corvair; Jim said Yes! President LeRoy led the meeting and our speaker was Brent Dalton of Goodrich Tires. Sylvan reported on the Christmas dinner. Bill Reider wrote about tires and speedometer error. George Morin told how to fix the Powerglide governor. There was a tech tip on wheel maintenance. 1977 V.3 Nr 1 # 22 We had a CB raffle. Outings for the coming year were suggested. Editor Glen Thompson wrote about a drive to Oklahoma City during which he had to overhaul his FC's engine. He buttoned up the engine and hit the starter. It wouldn't turn over! He installed the wrong piston! Did Glen ever get the right piston? Did the engine then turn over? Did he ever get to Oklahoma City? ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
