WHAT'S UP DAVE?
DAVID HUNTOON

This month I would like to use this place and time to mention our CNM long
distance member, David Neale. David bought Bill Reider's 1965 Corsa coupe and
had it shipped to England. Not a simple task with arranging shipping and stacks
of paperwork involved. He was very pleased with his new Corvair and had
wonderful plans to enjoy it in his retirement.

Yesterday, April 14, Lee Reider called to say David had passed that same day.
His 70th birthday. Lee's daughter had kept in touch with David's wife this past
year via text or in person phone calls. Larry, Steve and I had also kept in
touch with David with emails at times just to keep in touch. The last 6 months
we haven't heard much as David had some medical issues suddenly.

David had planned to visit New Mexico at some time so we could sample the local
crafted beers. I am sure New Mexico would seem an exotic place compared to the
Midlands of England. Mountains, deserts, Route 66, the Rio Grande, expansive
horizons, rattlesnakes and ranches bigger than some European countries. His
emails were well crafted and a delight to read. He always signed with.....

  David B. Neale,
  In leafy Leicestershire, England.
A safe haven for lovers of Francoise Madeleine Hardy,
The Chevrolet Corvair, and any equipment that utilises thermionic valves.

RIP David.....

NOTES:
  Thermionic valves are vacuum tubes.
Francoise Hardy was the girlfriend of the young Italian driver in the 1966
movie "Grand Prix" starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand,
Toshiro Mifune, Brian Bedford, Jessica Walter, Antonio Sabato, and
    Francoise Hardy.

Lovely.

REGULAR MEETING -- APRIL 3, 2021
STEVE GONGORA

Treasury Report

After a $35.00 filing fee to CORSA, the balance of the club treasury stands at
$7,372.93. Jim Pittman has been paying all newsletter expenses out of pocket
since the pandemic started. He would like to see the equivalent dollar amount
from CNM treasury allocated to Tri-State expenses. So far, he has spent over
$1,000.00 for the newsletters. This is a tremendous boost for the club and will
allow us to plan for any shortfalls that may arise from unexpected costs. We all
thanked Jim for his support of the club. In the same way Terry Price has taken
care of all the postcards that have kept us apprised of upcoming meetings and
events. All members are grateful for these tremendous efforts.

Old Route 66 CleanUp

Greg Nelson organized the first cleanup of 2021 on Saturday March 27, 2021. Six
CNM members engaged in collecting 16 bags of miscellaneous garbage, bumpers, hub
caps, and more. Thank you all for your civic intervention. The clean-up was
reported to the NM Department of Transportation and the bags were hauled away.

Next Old Route 66 Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, May 8th at 9:00 AM.

Econo-Run

President David Huntoon is putting together an Econo-Run in the east mountains
and will announce at a future date and time. He plans on touring the East
Mountains and distance would be around 50 miles.

Tri-State

Tarmo Sutt has been involved in tweaking the Tri-State website to be informative
and establishing registration page that can be filled on line and e-mailed to
committee members. Our goal is to have a fillable PDF format. With the
information from the webpage we can prepare information in advance, such as name
tags, labels for the car show, and accumulate lists for planning. The site is:

Terry Price talked about arrangements with the Marriott Hotel. He is in contact
on a daily basis and everything is still as planned. The Marriott will be able
to establish a web link to register for rooms online with the CNM discount.

Rita Gongora will check with El Pinto for the early get-together for those
people arriving on the Thursday of the Tri-State.

We need volunteers:
* Registration & Hospitality - all aspects
* Silent Auction - Donation of Items and Setting up of the silent auction
* Quilt from Kay Sutt
* Gift Baskets (need a committee to arrange the baskets)
* Certificates from Clark's Corvair Parts
* Help selling Items to sell - T-Shirts, Cooler bags, Hats and Souvenirs
* Car Show - Oversee Car wash, Judging, Count Ballots
* General help of people to be as a Go-To person to assist those in need
* Incorporate the help of the Chamber of Commerce to help with CNM
* For awareness of museums and activities for our Corvair attendees
* Helping David Allin with the Balloon Rides

Rita Gongora will organize a tour to Tinkertown Museum on the Saturday of the
Tri-State.

Hello Deli is close by with a Coffee and Car Show every Saturday. CNM members
might want to check it out.

Tijuana Club will be in force. Make sure all member will bring their Sombreros.

Larry Blair is continuing to reach out to Harrison Schmitt to speak at our
banquet.

We need to notify the nearby Corvair clubs in neighboring states for our event.

Other business

Rita mentioned that she had learned that a Corvair enthusiast in El Paso had
passed on and had over 30 Corvairs and parts. All for sale.

Phil Finch needs CNM members to help organizing his brother Richard's Corvair
collection in Tularosa, NM. Richard Finch was the author of "How to Keep Your
Corvair Alive". David Huntoon is spearheading a group to head down to Tularosa.
Contact David if you would like to participate. Richard's cars and parts should
be interesting!

Leroy Alderete is selling one of his Corvairs. 1965 Turquoise Monza. Call
505-898-1195 or 505-699-3306

BOARD MEETING 21-APR-2021
KAY SUTT

Once again, because of the pandemic, the April CNM Board Meeting was via Zoom,
April 21 at 7:00 P.M. Present were Vice-president Tarmo Sutt, Treasurer Steve
Gongora, Secretary Kay Sutt, Newsletter Editor Jim Pittman, Old Route 66 Cleanup
Chair Greg Nelson, Tri-State Chair Terry Price and Tri-State Committee Member
Lupe Arellanes. President David Huntoon was representing CNM at a New Mexico Car
Council meeting and was unable to attend. Terry said he had three other Zoom
meetings scheduled at the same time as ours - who knew we would be so busy in
the middle of a pandemic?

The May General Meeting will be in person, subject to the NM State Covid
guidelines: masks, social distancing. It will be held Saturday, May 1, at Steve
and Rita Gongora's house (outside, or in their garage, depending on the weather)
at 10:00 A.M.

President David Huntoon left word for the Board that the Econorun, tentatively
proposed for May, has been postponed. Stay tuned for more details as they
emerge.

Greg Nelson called the second Old Route 66 Cleanup meet for Saturday, May 8 at
9:00 A.M. at the usual location.

Jim Pittman, Newsletter Editor, set Friday, April 23 at 9:00 P.M. as the
newsletter deadline for the May issue.

The remainder of the discussion centered around the Tri-State meet, which CNM is
hosting October 15-17 in Albuquerque. Terry Price and Lupe Arellanes led the
discussion, and questions and comments were offered by various other officers.

1. Terry and Lupe have completed the print advertisement for the CORSA
Communique, and they were told it COULD appear in the June issue, but WILL be in
the July issue, so we should see more activity soon after its initial
publication in the next issue of the CORSA Communique.

2. Larry Blair reported to Terry that he had contacted Harrison Schmitt's
representative and was assured that Dr Schmitt WILL be available as the keynote
speaker at the Tri-State Meet.

3. Lupe and Terry have finalized preparation of the online registration process
for the www.tristatecorvairs.com website, and Tarmo Sutt reported he would work
with the website person to get it active online by the weekend. There will be a
link to the online registration, but it was agreed participants would also have
access to the mail-in form if they are uncomfortable using the online form.
Payments will still be made via snail mail to Treasurer Steve Gongora.

4. Steve reports we currently have one participant signed up from Colorado.

5. CNM members are encouraged to make hotel reservations early, and you are
encouraged to do your online registration early as well. The early registration
gives Lupe ample time to ensure the system for tracking the entrants is up and
running properly before the anticipated busier time closer to registration.

The meeting was adjourned within the Zoom 40-minute limit.

Members are reminded you are welcome at all Board meetings. If you wish to
attend a Zoom meeting of the board, email Kay Sutt at suttkay@gmail.com to
request an invitation to join the discussion.

APRIL REPORT - ROUTE 66 TRI-STATE
TERRY PRICE

Astronaut Harrison Jack Schmitt has accepted our invitation to speak to us at
the banquet at our Route 66 Tri-State event this October 16th. Thanks, so much,
to Larry Blair for setting this up for us. I believe the talk will be very
interesting. It is not every day we get to hear a talk from someone who has
actually walked on the moon. Arranging a speaker for the banquet is only one of
the jobs we need to complete for the Tri-State.

One of our biggest tasks at hand has been to develop the registration process
that is easy to use, efficient, and problem free. Much work is taking place to
complete the registration form so that it can be used on our Route 66 Tri-State
web site. It looks like we are going to have two registration forms, both
available on the web site. One form could be printed out from the web site and
mailed in with a check and the other form would be filled out on the computer
and emailed from the web site, the check would be mailed in separately. It will
be the registrant's option as to which method would be used. It would be an
advantage for the club to email the registration in because it will enable us to
process a number of activities: car show registration, dining and banquet
reservations, T-shirts and so on.

Hopefully, at the next meeting on May 1, we can start filling in positions for
the Tri-State, like vote counters, ticket takers, hospitality workers,
registration workers, snacks for the hospitality room and others. I will try to
have a list of areas that members can serve at the meeting.

See you at the May meeting.... Terry

RECOLLECTIONS OF DAVID NEALE
LEE REIDER

David Neale first contacted me in response to an ad in the CORSA Communique
magazine which offered Bill's 1965 Corsa for sale. David was greatly embarrassed
when he learned that Lee Reider was Bill's wife, and that he had addressed a
woman he did not know by her first name, as no well brought-up English gentleman
would ever do. He asked to have a further conversation by telephone.

After several attempts to connect at a mutually convenient time in consideration
of the time difference -- we are seven hours behind British time -- the
conversation took place. I immediately assured him that I was in no way
offended, that I knew perfectly well that Lee was also a man's name and that Lee
was a nickname, anyway. The negotiations that followed were the beginning of a
15-month series of emails back and forth as we became adopted families to each
other.

The following recollections are just a very few that particularly relate to CNM
and/or to the car itself.

David told me that he felt he would just be the custodian of Bill's Corvair,
that he would care for it as Bill would want and that it would be more valuable
to him because it came with a history.

David was extremely sorry that he would be unable to attend the Tri-state meet
originally scheduled for May, 2020. That was before Covid19 changed everything.
He wanted to meet all the CNM members who had helped so much to prepare the
Corvair for shipping and had become friends, as well. He regretted that he would
miss seeing and hearing from astronaut Harrison Schmitt, since he and many other
Brits had avidly watched every bit of news about the Apollo 11 voyage and
moonwalk. He was also impressed to know that Bill's and my pastor, Joseph
Cangiolosi, had been employed by Grumman Aircraft Corporation, the manufacturer
of the Lunar Lander, and that Joe Cangiolosi had worked on Apollo 8, 9, & 10 and
had worked directly with the Apollo 11 astronauts by inputting data as they did
extensive tests to ensure that the Lunar Lander would be able to lift them off
the moon and safely back into Apollo 11 for its return to earth.

David was also interested in meeting Jay Hertz and seeing his outstanding
collection of fully restored antique cars. It is likely that CNM became
acquainted with Jay Hertz through Bill, since I had been Jay's Legal Assistant
at Sutin, Thayer & Browne for 12 years, and Bill and Jay had shared their common
interest in the car hobby.

David was kind enough to send a letter and pictures of the Corvair to our
grandson Jonathan by email after I had made him aware that Jon had some vague
uneasiness about his grandpa's car and wanted assurance that David actually had
the car in his possession.

David's kindness, friendliness, warmth and wry sense of humor will be greatly
missed by his adopted Albuquerque family.

======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~======
First, let me say thank you very much to Corvairs of New Mexico for
being so gracious to our family in so many ways! Also, for allowing
me to share with you our story about a truly remarkable man!

WHO KNEW WHAT A CORVAIR COULD DO?
LAURIE (REIDER)

What can I say about dear David Neale, my brother from another mother and
another land?

What started out as an Exchange of a bit of History, the prized and fully
restored Corvair of my dad, Bill Reider, to a man in England, David Neale, who
was so excited to get the car, quickly became more than just an "exchange."
David almost immediately became "family." We all agreed, including dad.

David was a retired police officer of 30 years. His love for Corvairs was
tremendous!

Once David and I began emailing back and forth regularly, it didn't take long
for him to ask me if I wouldn't mind if he could "Adopt me as his little sister
that he never had?"

Of course I said Yes! "Such an honour it was, is and will forever be, my other
brother!"

Our emails were always so full of life and laughter! We both agreed that when we
saw an email from each other, it put a big smile on our faces.

All of us were adopted in my family. I had just connected with some of my
biological family members in Europe. I had planned to take a trip to Poland and
Germany for a "Family Reunion" that I was invited to. Once David heard about
that, he got very excited for me. He and his wife Sui-Fong, so graciously
invited me to come to England and stay with them for a while beforehand. It was
a No brainer, of course I would! I had even gotten my passport!

David was so excited when I planned on coming. He would tell me of all these
different places in England he wanted to take me to see. What was so exciting to
me was that David kept saying we would drive my dad's Corvair around the
countryside in honour of him! He even called me on the phone to help make plans
and give me travel tips!

Soon after there was serious talk about my going there, David sent me a
gorgeous, out of print, hard copy of this book of a lot of the places in England
he loved to visit and some of the places where we would drive dad's car to. Just
so I could see what it would be like. He wrote inside the book once again about
a couple places they wanted to take me. He called it "A little piece of Heaven"
and signed it, as he did with emails, with MUCH LOVE! That book is something I
will treasure the rest of my life! What an honour it would've been indeed!

I was able to show it to my dad and it brought him great joy that a man with
such good character not only got his Corvair, but he was delighted to know that
we were going to drive it around such beautiful countryside! He loved the
beautiful photos!

Then, COVID hit and all plans for Europe were off. In almost every email we both
said we could not WAIT to meet each other face to face and we'd pray that this
thing would be over quickly. David called it somewhat like a Biblical plague.

A bit later, David went through some trials medically, but neither one of us
ever lost hope that all would be better and we would still meet one day sooner
than later. He always had such a positive demeanor and outlook!

He called me on the phone once he went home from the hospital to stay. I am
forever thankful that I was able to actually speak to him and tell him he TRULY
WAS just like a brother to me and how much LOVE we all had for him! (Me the
most!)

Take two of the most one-of-a-kind, outstanding, men I've ever met in my life,
from across the globe. Not only bring them together as two families and make
them as one family. All for the love and bonding of a simple car called the
Corvair.

If that isn't exchanging a bit of History, I don't know what is!

Thank you again, Corvairs of New Mexico, for letting me share a bit of my story
with you and paying tribute where tribute is due!

  				Laurie (Reider)

BILL REIDER'S CORSA
JIM PITTMAN

The car that David Neale bought from Lee and Bill Reider and had shipped to
England had a long history with Corvairs of New Mexico. I wrote about the car in
our July 2008 newsletter. Here are some photos Bill sent me at the time.

Bill told me he bought the car in 1989 and had to put in a new fuel pump so he
could get it to his shop where he started fixing it up. He drove it as a daily
driver from 1989 until 2007. The car saw a lot of highway miles and went to any
number of Corvair events, including a trip to Florida where he stopped by the
Corvair Lover's Holiday event (something like our Tri-States) near Pensacola.

The car started out as a 1965 Corsa. A new engine and a 1966 transaxle, along
with BMW seats, helped it drive better. Bill always liked to see "black trim"
cars and when it needed painting he picked a silver and black theme. The
aluminum and stainless steel trim pieces were powder coated black and the panel
under the doors and the tail cove were painted with a special formula Krylon.

In July 2008 the car was waiting on a brake job and after that the
"Silver-and-Black" was again a nice driving "show car" that took Bill to many
other club events near and far.

RUMINATIONS OF A ROUTE 66 TRASH PICKER-UPPER
BY BAGMAN BLAIR

Over several years of picking up debris along our assigned stretch of
Old Route 66, I have come to some observations and conclusions, some of
which I have shared with my fellow trash baggers.

Here you go:

* New Mexicans are slobs.
* Lots of water bottles signal prosperous times.
* Lots of beer cans signal bad times.
* Lots of empty miniature liquor bottles signal really bad times, as in
COVID 19. Smirnoff and Jack Daniels are favorites.
* New Mexicans are weight conscious, evidenced by light beer cans.
* New Mexicans are health conscious, evidenced by preponderance of chewing
    tobacco over cigarette packs.
* New Mexicans prefer disposable diapers.
* Plastic straws are hard to pick up.
* Modern cars disintegrate into plastic shards upon impact.
* Bicycle riders are snobs.
* The size of tires on a pickup is inversely proportional to the IQ of the
    driver.
* Loud mufflers or yelled epithets are a sign of limited vocabulary.
* COVID 19 is ending, based on increased mask count.
* New Mexicans are slobs.

However, the experiences have been enjoyable and rewarding, because of the
camaraderie, sunlight and fresh air, not to mention the hope of finding lost
treasure.

OCTOBER 1979 ASPENCADE
JIM PITTMAN

It's October 14th, Sunday morning, time to go on the CNM unofficial Celebration
of Autumn, the Jemez-Valle Grande Aspencade. I still have my red 1965 Corsa
convertible, just the car for this tour. The weather is excellent. Put the top
down carefully, wrapping the plastic window with a clean blanket to prevent
scratches. Boy, that boot cover is sure hard to pull into position when it's
cold. I'm too stubborn to leave a few of them unsnapped, and my fingers ache for
hours from tugging on the stiff material.

Guess we're about ready to go. I really should have washed the car yesterday.
Well, what's more important, the way a car looks or the way it runs? Francis
would say, both. Well, this one is running like a top, no matter how it looks.

We're off! Wow -- look at all the balloons. I forgot it's the last day of the
Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. They're doing their last mass ascension. Look at all
the people parked along the road watching. I hope we don't get in a traffic jam
as we head up I-25.

Now where is that spot where we are supposed to meet? There it is. Good, there's
another Corvair. At least we will have more than one car in this caravan. Hi!
How you like the balloons? Where's everybody else? Guess we are a bit early.

Soon we have quite a group of Corvairs. They are all nice and shiny. Well, most
of them. A few are non-convertibles. That's okay. A few of the convertibles
aren't topless!? Well, that's okay too. We're off. Not very exciting driving
along the freeway. The curvy road beyond San Ysidro is more fun. The trees
aren't quite far enough along for maximum color, but they're beautiful. Look at
those red rocks. You can sure see a lot with the top down. Stop at the Soda Dam
for photos. Impressive lineup of Corvairs.

Valle Grande -- a nice place for a picnic. It is huge. And we realize that we
can see only a small part of the whole caldera. We can just make out cows
grazing in the valley below. Sharp-eyed folks point out a couple of cowboys on
horses. I need binoculars to see them. People driving along the road stare. A
few wave. Wonder what they think of these old cars?

Picnic time's over. Press on. Into the forests above Los Alamos. Down the grades
and sharp switchbacks. Second gear; don't want to get the brakes too hot. Go by
Bandolier National Monument. On the right, a lot of burned trees from the fire a
few years ago. On toward Santa Fe. There's the old suspension bridge over the
Rio Grande. Now the road is civilized; wide, straight, boring. I'm tired; wish I
was home now. Go through the city. Ah, at last -- here's the turn off to
Cerrillos and Madrid. Much better than that miserable and boring drive south
along the freeway.

We pass a '66 Corvair. Never saw that one before. Wonder who it is? Could it
possibly be a club member, or a member's relative? We soon leave it behind.
Being tired makes you want to hurry and get home, not dawdle along and look at
the countryside. Too bad - it's nice countryside to look at. We glimpse the
church at Cerrillos.

Slow down for Madrid. The place sure has become populated in the last several
years. Doesn't really look like a ghost town anymore. Press on past the road to
the ski area. Cedar Crest. The road is civilized again, wide and smooth. On to
Tijeras canyon. More traffic now. The freeway. Drive west on I-40. Into the sun.

Well, it has been a long day and I'm really tired of driving. About 200 miles
round trip. Hope my pictures come out. I'm glad we went. I mean, how often do
you get to drive around in the colorful New Mexico Autumn in the middle of a
flock of Corvairs? Yeah, it was a great day. We'll have to be sure to do it
again. Next year.

SEVEN YEARS AGO [ MAY 2021 VOL 47 NR 5 ISSUE 548 ]
JIM PITTMAN

2014 V.40 Nr 5 #464

Five Corvairs lined up to drive to Santa Fe for a club breakfast. At the
breakfast some nine Corvairs posed for photos. Golf heroes illustrated John
Wiker's article on a day of golf. We marked the passing of Roger Pape with a
photo of him and his favorite 1971 Corvette. We are four weeks away from the
Chama Tri-State, said Larry Yoffee, Time to get ready for it! Old Route 66
cleanup continued despite highway maintenance work. Joel Yelich did a "brake
job" and described the process. Terry Price described the fine club breakfast at
a Santa Fe restaurant with nine Corvairs in the parking lot.

2007 V.33 N.5 #380

Two Corvairs in Carey Hubbard's workshop were in the process of being restored.
Inside, three Corvairs were seen at the April meeting at Galles Chevrolet, one
of them a rusty but rare 1969 convertible. Robert Gold helped us plan a group
attendance at an Isotopes ball game. That's BASEBALL for any who don't know.
President Ray told us about an Easter adventure he had about thirty years ago
that featured melted chocolate Easter bunnies. Steve Goodman previewed the
PPCC-sponsored Tri-State in Monte Vista, CO. Robert Gold reported on the Car
Council and previewed the Spring Thaw (get your classic car serviced almost for
free) and the Albuquerque Museum car show. Cary told about adding air
conditioning to an early model. Heula reported on the club's April breakfast and
TUNA session. A series of photos gave an idea of the "mechanicking fun" we had.
Some of us left the TUNA with our cars running better!

2000 V.26 N.5 #296

Steve Gongora provided several photos on a club trip to El Paso to see the War
Eagles Museum. There was an RF-84F Thunderjet, a P-40 Tigershark, a collection
of old Corvairs, and Steve's Corsa coupe under the shade of pecan trees near Las
Cruces. Our meeting was held at Galles Chevrolet. Meeting minutes were full of
plans for the April trip down south, the Museum car show, the Tri-State, a
camping trip and other summer activities. Elizabeth Domzalski reported on the
trip to Las Cruces and El Paso, and a fine trip it was. Finally, a tech tip
entitled "Tail Light Ghost" by Dale & Marilynn Dewald Hancock was reprinted from
Virtual Vairs. The "ghost" part referred, no doubt, to the awesome complexity of
the electrical circuits controlling brake and turn signals. Well, there are
plenty of mechanical parts to go awry without having to worry about ghosts.

1993 V.19 N.5 #212

Another Morgan fantasy cover drawing. Secretary Chuck ran the meeting because
Del and Bob were both absent. Treasurer Will reported a bank balance of $1,381.
LeRoy previewed the May Museum car show. We ordered Club jackets. Seth Emerson
sent the Club a letter asking for a bid to host a CORSA convention and we agreed
to consider it. Bill Reider told us about the Milestone Car Society, saying
Corvairs were about old enough to qualify. Tarmo told us about cars in Santa Fe
that were confiscated and crushed because the owner violated city zoning laws.
The owner considered his cars to be a collection but the city did not. Bill
McClellan reminded us that Casa Chevrolet was paying for our newsletter printing
and mailing. Larry Blair told us how to repair loose rivets on your early glove
box door. You can test an alternator by hooking it to the car's wiring, then
spinning with an electric drill. Mike Dawson discussed chemical helpers and how
they work.

1986 V.12 N.5 #128

Several Corvair owners at a football field were waiting for a hot air balloon to
show up. We had parked several Corvairs on the field, so arranged to spell out
"Corsa" for an aerial photo. The balloon couldn't fly because of the wind, so we
had no aerial photo, just photos on the ground. The treasury stood at $756. We
planned car shows, a Tri-State meet, a flea market outing, a comet watch at Bill
Hector's place in the east mountains and a trip to Los Alamos to see a stock of
Corvair parts that had to go. Carl Johnson's tech tips were how to keep those
pesky leaves out of your air ducts and how parts cleaning solvents were toxic
and could lead to joint problems. Karen Jackson reported on a Corvair event in
Phoenix attended by a few New Mexicans.

1979 V.5 N.5 #44

Two Rochester HV carbs were depicted on the cover. Secretary Les Campbell was
moving to Connecticut. Ike Meissner's tech tip told how to clean grungy parts
with a tub of hot water and laundry detergent. There were details from George
Brazil's super Spyder. Frank McKenna warned about using too much silicone sealer
because globs could get loose and clog oil passages. Francis described a spring
attached to the right-hand carb linkage to compensate for linkage slop so as to
keep a more steady idle. We asked if anyone could write an article comparing
front-wheel-drive handling with that of our rear-engine Corvairs.
