DAVID HUNTOON Welcome to summer everyone. Hope all are well. Things are proceeding nicely with the TriState preparations. Yesterday Terry and I had a pleasant meeting with our local Marriott contact for the first time. Sara was most helpful and answered our concerns. Actually, these were Terry's questions as he has the experience in planning events. For me, I am a novice at such things so thanks Terry for your help. We had a successful June Old Route 66 cleanup and a good Econo Run recently. Greg and I attended the June Car Council meeting. Upcoming events for them are the July 9th Collector Car Appreciation Day with an ice cream social at the hotel El Vado around 7:00 P.M. Planned to coincide with the Route 66 Association traveling across New Mexico. They have a planned stop that evening here. It would be nice to show up in their support. The all clubs picnic this year is different. A run to Galisteo with a bring-your-own lunch. Leaving from Smiths on Central at Tramway at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday August 7th. (Note: that's our scheduled meeting day.) Both events sound fun and I hope CNM has a good presence. With the TriState approaching and other events happening as the state opens up we should take advantage of the opportunities. So, clean them up and drive! Wanted to add that there is an All Corvair Show in Cripple Creek on July 24. Pikes Peak Corvair Club is putting this on and I remember a few of our members attending their show in the past. No doubt a good time and not that far up the road. Later, David ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ECONO RUN 2021 Saturday morning on a clear, warm summer day 3 Corvairs, 1 other and 2 motor- cycles showed up. A total of 21 people were present. President's Report: David reported on the May NMCCC meeting, and although there will be no Museum Car Show this year they are beginning to schedule events again. There will be a Swap Meet, July 15-17, to be held at the Albuquerque Dragway. The Fourth of July Santa Fe Plaza car show and pancake breakfast will take place after having been cancelled in 2020. The State Fair will take place and CNM will show our cars the last Sunday of The State Fair, September 19, and details will follow. Heula and Vickie have requested that the first aid kit be inventoried and updated for the Tri-State, and David and Greg agreed to take care of that. Bill Darcy, Pat Hall's friend and a CNM-friendly painter passed away last week. Lon Wall, of Corvair Underground, also passed last month. Rest in peace, Gentlemen, and thank you for your contributions to the Corvair. John Green of Pikes Peak Corvair Club asked for information on the Tri-State to put in their newsletter, and David sent information. Garrie Fox has put information about the meet on his Pikes Peak Corvair website. Econorun in East Mountains: David announced that the Econorun will take place on Saturday June 19. It will start at the Cedar Crest Shell Station on the corner of Highway 14 and Frost Road/Sandia Crest Road, and winners/results will be published in next month's newsletter. Details about the Econorun was printed in the June newsletter.. Vice President's Report: Tarmo had nothing new to report. Secretary's Report: Kay Sutt had nothing new to report. Treasurer's Report: Steve Gongora reported the balance in the account is $7,622.61. Sunshine Committee Report: Vickie Hall was not present, so there was no report this month. Newsletter Editor: Jim Pittman was present and informed members the deadline for the next newsletter is 9 P.M. on Friday, June 25. Old Route 66 Cleanup: Greg Nelson reports the next cleanup will be Saturday, June 12 at 9 A.M. at the regular place. He requested additional help this month since regular attendees Tony & Linda will be out of town this time. The group will proceed to Roots Farm Cafe in Tijeras after the event. Old Business Virtually all the remaining business centered on the upcoming Albuquerque Tri-State Meet scheduled for October 15-17, 2021. 1. The Boydston Award: It was agreed that this award, which was presented at twenty-one consecutive Tri-State meets from 1998 to 2018, will be returned exclusively to CNM and will be presented at our Christmas Party or the Anniversary Party. The Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain clubs have both indicated they no longer wish to participate in this award. Eliminating it from the Tri-State Banquet will provide more time for our speaker, Astronaut Dr. Harrison Schmitt. 2. Registration: Nineteen people and 16 cars are currently registered for Tri-State. Lupe reports the updates to the website are working well, making her work simpler. She has requested that a link "button" be added to the www.tristatecorvairs.com website to make reservations at the hotel with the proper rate, etc., so please make your hotel reservations early for the hotel. If you have any problems registering in this way, please contact Terry Price for assistance. 3. Hospitality Room: Terry sent around sign-up sheets for the Hospitality Room and Registration. He needs two people on registration and one in the hospitality area from 8:00 to 6:00 on Friday and from 8:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, and he has asked for people to sign up in 2-hour increments during those days.. 4. The Banquet will be at 6:00 Saturday evening. 5. Thursday evening set-up of the Hospitality Suite will be handled by volunteers Steve & Rita Gongora, Anne Wiker and Tarmo & Kay Sutt. We will need donations of snacks from all club members for the duration of the meet, similar to past Tri-State meets. 6. Committee Meeting: Terry called a Tri-State Committee meeting at 9 AM, before the July 3 General meeting at Steve's and Rita's home to discuss details in greater depth. 7. Hotel Reservations: Please make your hotel reservations early. CNM is obligated for 40 hotel rooms, but we can book up to 50 rooms. New Business: 1. The next Board Meeting will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, June 16 at 7:00 P.M. Remember all members are welcome to attend these meetings. Let Kay Sutt know so she can add your name to the Zoom link sent out prior to the meeting (505-690-2056 or suttkay@gmail.com). 2. The next General Meeting will be an in-person meeting (with appropriate Covid guidelines observed) in Steve & Rita Gongora's back yard at 8419 Palo Duro, NE, on Saturday, July 3 at 10 A.M., pending any changes in the State's meeting requirements during the pandemic. Members are urged to bring your Corvairs. Any changes necessitated by the State of New Mexico's Covid guidelines will be transmitted to club members as necessary. 3. Larry Blair proposed a Rail Runner Train roundtrip from Santa Fe to Belen on Wednesday, September 1. Members could board the specified Road Runner train at their nearest station, ride north to Santa Fe for lunch, then re-board the train south for its trip to Belen and a return to their starting point later in the afternoon. Details were discussed, but no details were finalized. Stay tuned for details later. If you haven't experienced the Rail Runner yet, it is a fun sightseeing trip, and the round-trip cost is only $8 for seniors. The meeting was adjourned at about 11:30 A.M. Rita Gongora provided drinks, snacks and posole during and after the meeting. Thank you Rita! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== OLD ROUTE 66 CLEANUP FOR JULY AND AUGUST GREG NELSON The Route 66 trash pickup for July is scheduled for Saturday the 10th. Because it's getting pretty toasty out there, even at 9:00 AM, and there may be Arizona smoke present, I propose we keep the pickup to one hour maximum. Afterwards we can meet at the Roots Farm Cafe in Tijeras for snacks and chats. This is an early heads up for August trash pickup. I'm tentatively scheduled to attend the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, NV the weekend of August 14-15. So I propose we push back a week to Saturday August 21st. Cheers Gregory S. Present at the meeting were President, David Huntoon; Vice-president, Tarmo Sutt; Secretary, Kay Sutt; Treasurer, Steve Gongora and Newsletter Editor Jim Pittman. The July General Meeting will be in person, subject to CDC and/or NM State Covid guidelines in place at the time. It will be held Saturday, July 3, at Steve and Rita Gongora's house (outside, or in their garage, depending on the weather) at 10:00 A.M. The next NMCCC (New Mexico Car Club Council) meeting to be held next week will include elections of officers. President David will be present to represent CNM's vote. Our Old Route 66 cleanup was held last Saturday, June 12. Five members, Greg Nelson, David Huntoon, Jim & Lupe Arellanes and Ann Wiker were present. Thank you, folks, for your work upholding CNM's reputation. President David Huntoon reiterated that the CNM Corvair Econorun for Saturday June 19, will take place, and that directions are in the June newsletter. He stated he would be there at 10:00 for check in, but if people wish to participate and he is not present, they should fill up their tank, take the tour, re-fill their car and phone or email David their results. The rankings will be in the next newsletter. Jim set Friday, June 25 at 9:00 P.M. as the newsletter deadline for the upcoming issue. Pat and Vickie Hall emailed David that Bill Darcy's funeral will be held in Belen on Saturday, June 12 at 3:00 P.M. Pat and Vickie suggested everyone who attends should meet at their house at 2:00 and caravan to the church in their Corvairs. David Huntoon also talked to Robert Gold, who is in charge of the State Fair car displays. Robert reported all arrangements are "normal" for this year's display for CNM, and will be the same as past State Fair displays. VP Tarmo reports the 'button' for hotel registration is now active and working properly on the tristatecorvairs.com website. Mark Martinek reported the hotel phone number on the mail-out postcards was not correct. The Santa Fe Plaza car show is on for this Fourth of July which is a Sunday. (Subsequent to the meeting VP Tarmo reports the car show will be from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. this year, with no pancake breakfast. A total of 70 cars will be allowed, and 'tickets' for the display are all spoken for. So, you are welcome to attend, but no cars will be allowed if they are not already signed up.) Terry Price sent word that we still need volunteers for many time slots in all categories during the Tri-State Meet. Contact Terry to tell him when you can help! The meeting was adjourned within the Zoom 40-minute limit. Members are reminded you are welcome at all Board meetings. If you wish to attend a Zoom meeting of the board, email Kay Sutt at suttkay@gmail.com to request an invitation to join the discussion. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== "The American family travels to strange states and places in order to take their photographs and bring them back, as if the photographs will serve in future years as data-points, crystals of memory to give emotional resonance to experience which was originally without any." -- Norman Mailer (1970) OF A FIRE ON THE MOON ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== NEW MEXICO COUNCIL OF CAR CLUBS MEETING GREG NELSON On June 23 David Huntoon and I attended the monthly NM Car Council Meeting. I would recommend checking the NMCCC website for up-to-the-minute dates and times for all car related events like those listed above (www.nmcarcouncil.com). I also 'attended' the monthly CORSA Zoom call on June 17. Bill Hubbell gave a fantastic presentation on his 4-1/2 year restoration of John Glenn's 1964 Monza Convertible back to Factory Stock condition. The meeting was recorded and should be available via the CORSA website or CORSA Facebook page. Gregory S. We already have 36 registrations and 16 cars entered in the car show. There are a few people that don't want their cars entered in the competition but we would still like you to show them in the show. We really want to show as many Corvairs as we can. At the last meeting sign-up sheets were passed around for volunteers to help in the hospitality room and in registration. We will need more volunteers to properly staff those areas. We will also need some help before the banquet to put things on the tables like programs and centerpieces and collect meal tickets and vote counters to tabulate votes from the car show. Pat Hall will need help at staging cars. There will be more things coming up that will require helpers. Rita will need help assembling baskets for the silent auction. I know this sounds like we need a lot of help and we do, but it will not require a lot of anyone's time and should not be too demanding. So, we will pass around clip boards with sign-up sheets again. David and I met with the local sales representative at the Marriott and went over the contract and general expectations for the event to make sure we are on the same page. Marriott is working with us in all the areas that were originally discussed and seem to be anxious to have us. We are still in the process of putting together the sound system for the banquet. It looks like there is great interest in the event, plenty of support from club members, a very attractive web site and all at a reasonable price. Thanks for all the support! CORRECTION - Mark Martinek pointed out that the telephone number for the Marriott Pyramid in the advertisement and on the post card is incorrect! The correct number is (505) 821-3333. Apologies for the typo. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== TREASURY REPORT FOR 05-31-2021 to 06-xx-2021 ============================================= DATE CHECK# AMOUNT PAYEE DESCRIPTION BALANCE = $7,542.61 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= ========= 2021.06.06 2404 -$ J.Pittman Newsletter Printing JUN 2021 -$ $7,542.61 2021.06.06 2404 -$ J.Pittman 38 Newsletters -$ 46.43 $7,496.18 2021.06.06 2404 -$ J.Pittman 35 Stamps at $0.70 each -$ 24.50 $7,471.68 2021.06.06 2404 -$ J.Pittman 35 envelopes at $0.161 each -$ 5.64 $7,466.04 2021.06.06 2404 -$ 96.15 J.Pittman Envelopes, birthday cards, 200 -$ 19.58 $7,446.46 2021.06.xx 6150 +$ 25.00 Dues L.Piatt 12 m CNM +$ 25.00 $7,471.46 2021.06.xx 308 +$ 50.00 Dues D.Allin 26 m CNM +$ 50.00 $7,521.46 2021.06.07 3122 +$ 80.00 Deposit Ravon & Terry Hall TRI-STATE +$ 80.00 $7,601.46 2021.06.07 1476 +$ 90.00 Deposit Terry & Sarah Price TRI-STATE +$ 90.00 $7,691.46 2021.06.12 2016 +$ 40.00 Deposit Curtis Shimp TRI-STATE +$ 40.00 $7,731.46 2021.06.12 2859 +$ 90.00 Deposit Pat & Vickie Hall TRI-STATE +$ 90.00 $7,821.46 ========== ==== ========== =========== ========================================= ========= 2021.07.01 JUL NEWSLETTER ===================================================== $7,821.46 ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Happy Birthday Wishes to July CNM'ers: Debra Anderson Larry Blair Mark Domzalski Terry Hall Kelli Morgan Sui-Fong Neale James Richardson Kay Sutt Tarmo Sutt Valerie Nye Happy Anniversary Wishes to July CNM'ers: Linda & Dick Cochran Maggie & Bob Kitts Kelli & Mark Morgan ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== * * * * IT WAS THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO * * * * INSCRIPTION ROCK, PUEBLO RUINS, ECONO-RUN, A NATURAL ARCH JIM PITTMAN --- JULY 1986 There were enough cars to have a good econo-run although we really hoped for more than six. We set out, somewhat late, to head west for El Morro. Lots of traffic on the freeway. Once we turned south on NM 53, though, we didn't see very many cars, just lots of wide open space. The sun and air were hot but not oppressively so. I don't know about everybody else but I drove between 50 and 60 most of the way. At El Morro we first went to a picnic area and ate lunch and rested up from the drive. Then we drove to the National Monument headquarters where we gathered for a short talk by the Ranger on the history of "Inscription Rock." If you are from New Mexico or Arizona or California or Oregon there's a good chance one of your ancestors left a name carved on the vertical rock walls of the cliff somewhere. There are certainly plenty of names. There are petroglyphs made by early Indians and inscriptions by Spanish conquistadores, priests or soldiers. There are names left by members of the U.S. cavalry, names left by settlers from wagon trains moving west. A kind of capsule history of the Southwest for you to read in the rock walls, you might say. Several of us undertook the walk along the cliffs past huge ponderosa pines and then up to the top of the mesa to look out over the valley, down into the box canyon, and into the excavations of prehistoric pueblo dwellings. Thunder and dark clouds threatened but none of us got hit by lightning or soaked by showers. The rock formations and faults and erosion patterns along the cliffs and across the top of the mesa would surely fascinate a geology student. Certainly some of us amateur geologists were impressed. After resting up -- and drinking lots of water -- we formed up our modern version of a wagon train and moved 'em out. We headed for the official gasoline pump in Grants to see who won the economy part of our jaunt. Eagle eyes watched the pump and quick fingers guarded against spilled drops of fuel. When we were all filled up we had the unofficial results and everybody but the winner gave various reasons why they didn't win. The prize for best reason for not winning has to belong to Norm and B.J. Brand. Their Corvair, they discovered, had a low tire, and on investigating they found a spark plug imbedded in the tire! The smart alecks among us all quickly pointed out the fact that good gas mileage required six plugs in the engine and none in the tires. Norm and B.J. were not amused. Fortunately they were able to get the tire repaired at the gas station. Some of us turned off on NM 117 on the way back, looking for a natural arch. The scenery was fabulous with lava flows on one side and sheer cliffs on the other. We eventually found an unmarked road leading to the arch. Sure enough, there it was, and a pretty spectacular arch it was, too, when we got near enough to see it properly. We climbed up to where we could stand under the arch. It was out of the question to try to climb to the top without several more hours of daylight. On the way back we ran through several bursts of summer rainstorms: low clouds, hard rain, then clear air and cooler driving for awhile. All in all, it was a great escape from the city and we should thank our rallymaster Sylvan for doing the background work for the event. Here are the official results. Sylvan's total corrected mileage was 166.30 from pump to pump. Thanks to all who participated and helped make this such a nice Sunday event. Tri-State 2014 - Statistics by the Editor. Tri-State 2014 - Who Did What by Heula Pittman. Old Route 66 Cleanup by John Wiker. 2007 V.33 N.7 #382 COVER: Fourth of July with the Domzalskis in Placitas. Good turnout for the Tri-State meeting in Monte Vista with 16 CNM members. The Boydston Award went to John Koll of Colorado Springs. The June Communique printed Tarmo's article on his 1966 Corsa turbo. We planned to visit the Sticklers for fireworks. Ray told about scaring an 18-wheeler driver with his horn while driving his 1964 sedan. Bob Bauer reported on the raffle car he won at the 1996 Convention. Check our January 2012 issue. David asked members to tell about the longest nonstop trip they ever made by Corvair. His record was in 1967 a 1962 Monza coupe, from Sacramento to Chicago, 2,000 miles in two days and a night. Jim provided a story covering all he could remember about the 1967 "Stinger" owned by Don Heath, but was it a real Stinger? A photo showed Lee Olsen of Burdett, Kansas with his genuine white Stinger. 2000 V.26 N.7 #298 COVER: Steve Gongora's 1966 Corsa coupe at the VLA Radio Telescope. Our treasury held $6,020.39. We recognized Bill Reider with a lifetime achievement award. Debbie Deck reported on plans for our August campout. Dennis & Debbie Pleau packed for their move to Colorado Springs. We had to get a replacement trophy plaque for Tri-State attendance winners. Steve worked on designs for a new CNM license plate. An "All Chevy Show" was in the works. The CNM Ladies Group met at Brenda Wilvert's "in the mountains" and had a good time. Dennis refuted a newspaper columnist's ill-informed rantings about the "unstable" Corvair that was supposedly sent to the junkyard by Ralph Nader. How many errors of fact could one short column contain? Billiken had both Bill and Sylvan flying around in vintage P-51's. From Virtual Vairs we reprinted articles about tire sizes, how to identify rear wheel bearings and how many turbocharged Corvairs were made. Only 1,951 turbocharged 1966 Corsas were made and Jim owned two of them, but one was converted to a blueprinted 140. 1993 V.19 N.7 #214 COVER: Billiken was the pit boss of a CNM Indy racing team. President Del ran the meeting; treasurer Will said we had $1,433 in the bank after subtraction of BMW expenses. That was a joke. Our committee to plan the national convention had met twice and things were going swell. We planned a Corvair convoy to the Alamosa Tri-State. Bill Reider gave a talk on the 200 different places oil can leak from your Corvair. President Del Patten thanked all who participated in the Museum Car Show, and said he and Kim had a great time at the Tri-State. We planned a campout at Villanueva this year. Club jackets were in. Francis formally reported on the Tri-State and especially enjoyed the Ultra Vans and their owners. Mark Morgan provided an article on his years of cartooning and told how "Billiken" got started - it was in the Navy. Technical stuff included: tips on installing a convertible top, effects of front tire pressure on steering, trouble-shooting your Powerglide, using heavy-duty bearings in alternators, the right way to install hose clamps and the value of oil changes. A table from Car and Driver compared the 1963 Spyder with the 1965 turbo Corsa; very interesting! Finally, there was an essay on the dangers of governments making your license plate data easy for anyone to obtain. Were we actually talking about "identity theft" back in 1993? It has certainly been a growth industry. 1986 V.12 N.7 #130 COVER: a drawing borrowed from the San Diego club, a nice late coupe with a fancy spoiler. Clayborne ran the meeting; LeRoy said we had $757 to spend. Bill said the Car Council was happy with the car show but hoped to improve it for next year. A picnic and a swap meet were upcoming events. We planned a caravan to the Montrose Tri-State. LeRoy needed more items for our flea market money-maker. A trip to Los Alamos to pick up car parts was planned. Bill Reider gave a talk on how to photograph your car. Clayborne reported that we had a terrific trip to the Montrose Tri-State; thanks to all who helped. LeRoy had a detailed report with plenty of statistics. Karen Jackson reported on the "My First Car" contest, providing more stories from our members about their good old days with Corvairs. Bill Reider, not content with just a talk, gave us a page of notes on successful car photography. 1979 V.5 N.7 #46 COVER: Francis with his 1964 convertible at Ed Black's. A Ford Fiesta was in the used car lot; Francis told us he drove one of these all over Ireland. Doug Morgan reported on the NMCCC car show. A trip to Moriarty to participate in a July Fourth parade preempted our meeting. We planned a meeting at a Bella Vista dinner. A Shriners' parade featured red Corvair convertibles with white tops from Colorado Springs. We were looking for a volunteer to take on the secretary job. George Morin displayed several idler pulleys and described an inexpensive bearing replacement. Tech stuff: George wrote up his bearing replacement tips; fiberglass resin catalyst was said to be an eye hazard. Joe Caruso listed items for a Corvair emergency kit. Finally, Jim wrote about the importance of CORSA insurance to CNM and other affiliated clubs when we put on events. This is a major reason for the rule that all club members must be CORSA members. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
