David Huntoon Somehow I missed the last Car Council meeting so have nothing to report there. Actually, played golf that day, hot and humid, got home and relaxed and it just slipped my mind. Think there was a nap in there somewhere. Road cleanup went well with 10 bags of trash and 5 energetic people. I will let Greg inform you about the next one. We decided to change the schedule and it should be the last of the year. Remember the Tri State is fast approaching and we can never have too many volunteers. So sign up. Elections for club officers is near. I have decided to take a break and not run for office this year. We will need someone for the president's office. There will be some turn over in the other offices too so consider stepping forward to help the club. Being an officer is not that bad.... really! See you at the next meeting, David New Members We have a new member! I met Irv as I drove into the Lowes parking lot in my Corvair. He flagged me down and we talked for a bit and I mentioned our club. Got some membership forms from my car and signed him up! Not new to Corvairs and he is a CORSA member. Recently moved to Rio Rancho from Oklahoma, think I got that right. Should be at our next meeting so we can ask more questions then. Their names are Irv and Katherine Brock. The lesson is drive your Corvairs and keep some membership forms handy! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== September Old Route Cleanup Article -- Greg Nelson The August trash pickup was held a week late because I was in Las Vegas for a convention. Five club members participated and we filled 11 bags of trash. It was suggested that since the August session was a week late, and two regular participants would be out of town for the September session, that we cancel next month and resume in October. We all agreed. So, there won't be a Old Route 66 Cleanup event in September. Which is fortunate because September 11 is the first Saturday of the State Fair, my traditional day of attendance. The last trash day of the year will be October 9, the weekend before the Tri-State Meet. I attended the meeting of the N. M. Council of Car Clubs on the 25th. Only 12 members attended. Topics of Note discussed were: Last month's All Clubs Picnic. Thirty cars were on display. Loveland Colorado Swap Meet. 09/18/2021 - 09/19/2021 State Fair Car Shows. 09/09/2021 - 09/19/2021 Corrales Harvest Festival. 09/25/2021 - 09/26/2021 Please check the NMCCC website for additional event details. Cheers -- Greg Nelson ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== General Meeting, 08/07/2021 By Secretary Kay Sutt The meeting was called to order by President David Huntoon at 10:10 for our first in-person meeting in over a year and a half held at the Highland Senior Citizen Center at 131 Monroe St, NE. Eighteen members were in attendance, including a visitor, John Heald. President's Report: CNM will show our cars the last Sunday of State Fair, September 19, with final details to be reported elsewhere in this newsletter. * David received several car parts donated by John Heald. John is moving to Texas and wants the parts to be available to Corvair enthusiasts to keep their Corvairs alive. Those parts include an automatic transmission, a full set of engine shrouding, a front trunk lid and a rear deck lid. There was discussion if there was time to clean up the shrouding, paint it and put it in the silent auction at Tri-State, but no decision was made. Thank you John, and the best of luck for your move! * The Route 66 Street Rod Nationals swap meet will be held at the Expo NM grounds August 27-29. * David attended the NMCCC meeting, and urged members to consider attending the Jay Hertz 3-day events, including a car tour on August 20-21 in Taos. * Finally, David announced he would be stepping down as President of CNM after the upcoming election, and he asked members to consider taking the position. Dave is willing to answer any questions about the responsibilities and the time expenditures for the position. Vice President's Report: Tarmo told a story about finding a Corvair stopped on the side of the road at the I-25/Old Pecos Trail Exit in Santa Fe with the hood up. He stopped to help, and with some tweaking they were able to get the car back on the road. Tarmo made arrangements with the owner, who lives in Santa Fe, to meet to go over the car to ensure it continues to run for Carl, who still drives his Corvair daily. Secretary's Report: Kay Sutt reported she will step down as CNM secretary after the upcoming election too, after three years. Please consider taking on this small, but mandated job for CNM, and contact Kay for details. Treasurer's Report: Steve Gongora reported the balance in the account is $8,896.08. Terry Price pointed out that amount will begin declining soon, as expenses from Tri-State begin to come due. Sunshine Committee Report: Vickie will need help during set-up of Tri-State to bring the registration bags into the hotel. She will call when she gets close to have people come out to help bring in the bags. The first aid kit has been updated as needed, and a second one has been purchased (Thanks to Greg Nelson!). Newsletter Editor: Jim Pittman informed members the deadline for the next newsletter is 9 P.M. on Friday, August 27. Old Route 66 Cleanup Report: Greg Nelson scheduled the next cleanup for Saturday, August 21 at 9 A.M. at the regular place. The cleanups will continue on the third Saturdays of the month through October, at which time they will go dormant for the winter. Greg asks members to donate an hour of your time to make this job thorough and fast in order to meet CNM's promise to keep this mile of highway clean. Old Business: Virtually all the remaining business centered on the upcoming Albuquerque Route 66 Tri-State Meet scheduled for October 15 - 17, 2021. Terry announced that long-time CNM member and past CORSA president Mark Domzalski has agreed to MC the banquet. Mark was welcomed at the meeting today to greet old friends and meet new ones in CNM. The MC job will be in good hands. Fifty people, 22 cars and 20 booked hotel rooms are currently registered for Tri-State. So far, attendees are registered from Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Indiana. Event registrations should be made at the official www.tristatecorvairs.com website. The link to make reservations at the hotel with the proper rate, etc., is also available through that website. If you have any problems registering through the website, or if you encounter any problems registering by telephone, please contact Terry Price for assistance. REGISTER FOR TRI-STATE NOW! The registration/hospitality room will be moved into the gift shop area of the hotel, just off the central atrium. It is a lockable space where there are display cases and counters available for the silent auction and raffle items, etc. Terry has received the club lapel buttons for attendees, and Steve has the dash plaque design ready to go for printing. The audio/visual costs, including the hotel technician to set up the system, will run around $1,000 total. Terry is negotiating with the hotel to see if that cost can be reduced. Terry sent around sign-up sheets for the Hospitality Room and Registration. He needs two people on registration and one in the hospitality area between 8:00 and 6:00 on Friday and between 8:00 and 12:00 on Saturday, and he has asked for people to sign up in 2-hour increments during those days. Terry also needs six volunteers to count votes. Lupe is doing T-shirts, caps, and glasses, and is embroidering the cooler bags provided by Vickie Hall. All will be offered for sale at the meet. (Lupe has worked hard for Tri-State, including preparing and tracking the registrations, a detail-oriented and time-consuming job. Thank you Lupe, for all your hard work!) The banquet will be at 6:00 PM Saturday evening, spotlighting speaker Dr. Harrison Schmitt, the second to the last man to walk on the moon in the Apollo 17 mission, the last manned moon landing. Thursday evening set-up of the Hospitality Suite will be handled by volunteers Steve & Rita Gongora, Anne Wiker and Tarmo & Kay Sutt. There was discussion about the hospitality snacks, and it will be necessary to determine if those need to be pre-packaged items due to Covid safety restrictions, or if we can utilize homemade items as in past meets. Terry reminded Tri-State Committee members about the meeting at Steve/Rita Gongora's following this general meeting. Please make your hotel reservations NOW. We are obligated for 40 hotel rooms, but we can book up to 50 rooms if needed. If you encounter any problems registering for the hotel, contact Terry. New Business: The next Board meeting will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, August 18 at 7:00 P.M. All members are welcome to attend these meetings. Let Kay Sutt know so she can add your name to the Zoom link sent out prior to the meeting (505-690-2056 or suttkay@gmail.com). The next general meeting will be an in-person meeting (with appropriate/mandated Covid guidelines observed) at the Highland Senior Citizen Center, 131 Monroe St, NE, on Saturday, September 4 at 10 A.M., pending any changes in the State's meeting requirements during the rising tide of infections during this pandemic. Members are urged to bring your Corvairs. Any changes necessitated by the State of New Mexico's Covid guidelines will be transmitted to CNM members as necessary. Larry Blair will lead us in a Rail Runner Train roundtrip of the entire 96-mile route on Wednesday, September 1. Members can board the specified Rail Runner train at their nearest station and ride north to arrive at the Downtown Depot in Santa Fe at 11:16 A.M. We will stay for lunch, then re-board the train at 1:02 P.M. and ride south for its trip to Belen. We will return to our respective starting points on the train leaving Belen at 3:35 P.M. If you haven't experienced the Rail Runner yet, it is a safe, clean and easy sightseeing trip to see NM from a different perspective, and the round-trip only costs $8 for seniors. In order to continue using the Albuquerque Senior Centers a few of us need to register and pay their $20 annual fee. This fee is good for access to all the Albuquerque Senior Centers, and the small donation will help CNM continue to use this convenient and safe venue. Announcements: Phil Finch received information from Steve about how to register his Ultravan, which was reported in error by his brother's neighbor as stolen. Vickie Hall is the proud new owner of a mist blue 1965 4-door Corvair, which she and Pat are busily fixing up to feed their addiction to the Corvair. Tarmo Sutt reported a collection of 14 Corvairs was recently offered for sale at a Mecum auction in Florida. He will forward the results page to Newsletter Editor Jim Pittman. Terry Price reported, if people want to get out, that tonight is the first Summer Fest in downtown Albuquerque. John Heald reported he knows of a "rough" late model 140 convertible possibly for sale near Stanley. You can contact John with questions at 505-280-6891. The meeting was adjourned at about 11:30 A.M., after which several members went to ... ... the Tri-State Committee Meeting which followed our General Meeting, at the home of Steve and Rita Gongora. Thanks to the Gongoras for the fabulous meeting place! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Board Meeting, 08/18/2021 By Secretary Kay Sutt The July CNM Board Meeting was held August 18, 2021 at 7:00 P.M. via Zoom. Present at the meeting were President, David Huntoon, Vice-president Tarmo Sutt, Secretary Kay Sutt, Treasurer Steve Gongora, Tri-State Chair Terry Price, Old Route 66 Cleanup Chair Greg Nelson and Newsletter Editor Jim Pittman. The September General Meeting will be in person, subject to any CDC and/or NM State Covid guidelines in place at the time. It will be held Saturday, September 4 at 10:00 A.M., at the Highland Senior at 131 Monroe Street, NE, Albuquerque. The August Old Route 66 Cleanup will be held Saturday, August 21 at the regular place/time. Monthly cleanups will be held through October, when the project will go dormant for the winter months. Thanks to Greg Nelson for taking on this responsibility! New Member Irv Brock saw President David's Corvair in the parking lot of Lowe's in Rio Rancho and approached him. Irv is now a new member! Great sales job, David! The club pins President David ordered for the Tri-State meet have arrived. They will be distributed during registration for the event. Misty Jester of "Visit Albuquerque," a tourism-promoting department in the City of Albuquerque, met with Terry Price about assisting with the Tri-State. The department will provide items for the registration bags, and they will include the meet on the City of Albuquerque's events calendar on their website. The city is also willing to provide a person at the event to provide an information table promoting Albuquerque. Your tax dollars at work, Folks! The hospitality suite will be off the lobby in the old Gift Shop for three days, at a cost of $125 per day. The Presidential Suite on the 9th floor will still be available for our use. Terry tried to exchange that space for free use of the gift shop, but was unable to do so. A discount for the use of the hotel's audio/visual equipment has been negotiated by Terry. Larry Blair will find out details regarding an honorarium for speaker Dr. Schmitt, who is providing his services free to CNM. Our thanks to Larry for negotiating this opportunity for Tri-State attendees to hear about Dr. Schmitt's interesting life! The Tri-State Committee will meet Friday, August 20 at 6:00 at Steve/Rita Gongora's home. Expo New Mexico has announced verification that Covid-19 vaccinations will be required for all attendees and exhibitors at State Fair. Club Election: The Board voted to postpone the election of new CNM officers from the October until the November meeting due to the Tri-State Meet. President David and Secretary Kay have both indicated they intend to retire, so new officers will need to be elected. The September newsletter will include a form for nominations and the October newsletter will include the ballot. In-person voting will also take place at the November meeting for anyone not submitting a written ballot. Christmas Party: Preliminary discussion of the CNM Christmas Party was started. The Board agreed the Boydston Award will be awarded at that party. Copper Canyon Restaurant at 5455 Gibson Boulevard SE has served us well in past years, and it is the first location we would like to canvas for possible party dates. Cary Hubbard has posted a YouTube Video about the one-of-a-kind Atomic Energy Commission Corvair. Friday, August 27 at 9:00 P.M. has been set as the newsletter deadline for the upcoming issue. Steve Gongora has submitted the dash plaque for approval. The meeting was adjourned within the Zoom 40-minute limit. Members are reminded you are welcome at all CNM Board meetings. If you wish to attend a Zoom meeting of the board, email Kay Sutt at suttkay@gmail.com to request an invitation to join the discussion. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== September Report - Route 66 Tri-State Terry Price Wow! Things are really coming together for the Albuquerque Route 66 Tri-State and we are just waiting for all you Corvair enthusiasts to register for the event. We already have about 70 people registered and coming to the banquet to hear Harrison "Jack" Schmitt speak, to show your cars off and to do a lot of talking with other Corvair friends. We have early and late model convertibles, coupes, 2 door and 4 door sedans, forward controls, Greenbriers and Ultravans. I have seen several Corvairs that are in the process of getting finishing touches applied for the event. The banquet is getting in shape. The room will be set up and tables ready to go for a delicious dinner. We have some beautiful baskets, some for door prizes and others for silent auction. We have a beautiful Corvair quilt that is in the finishing stages. If you like Corvairs, you should really enjoy this Tri-State. The staff at the Marriott Pyramid are looking forward to serving us and have been working with us to make this event successful. Our "Hospitality/Registration Room" is located in the former Gift shop on the main floor and is just a few feet from the Atrium room, where we can sit, eat snacks and talk in comfort. We will have security to watch the cars at night so they will be safe. We really have tried to take care of everything to make this Tri-State successful. Lupe Arellanes has done a great job with the on-line registration and things are going very smoothly for everyone when they come to check in at the hotel. It is our plan to have a registration bag and envelope that will have the Corvair window card for the car show, the banquet ticket and food selection, a raffle ticket for a door prize and any other important information. It will also include some information about the order of events and info about Albuquerque restaurants etc. There are areas in which we still need to get some help. Things like manning the Hospitality/Registration room and helping to check people in at the banquet. If you are planning on attending the Albuquerque Route 66 Tri-State, please register on-line as soon as possible. We would like everyone to be registered by October 1, at the latest. The web site is very user friendly. The address is: http://tristatecorvairs.com After you register, you can reserve a room with the hotel on the same site. You can also call in your room reservation at 505-821-3333. You must mention the "Corvair Tri-State" to get the special rate of $109.00. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== THE STATE FAIR CAR SHOW RETURNS!!! It's a 1965 Monza, four door, automatic with air-conditioning. It was white with a bad paint job. It is now Mist Blue which is the original color. Isn't it pretty? I just love it. -- Vickie Hall ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== It Was Forty-four Years Ago Back when the club was starting up we had members who could tell a good story where the author made a monumental goof. Such was the case in this yarn by member (and newsletter editor) Glen Thompson. From the January 1977 issue. Learning the Hard Way Glen Thompson Early Wednesday morning, the 15th of December 1976, we pointed the pickup (1962 Corvair 95 Fleetside) east toward Oklahoma City beginning an exciting and eventful trip. We were going for the graduation of our son-in-law from Oklahoma Christian College. No unusual happenings; good weather, excellent time until about five miles west of the Watonga exit on I-40. A large cloud of blue smoke and a terrible noise caused me to pull over briefly to determine it was not a rod -- I wasn't sure what it was -- but it sounded deep and serious but was still running fairly smoothly. I drove on to Watonga and pulled into a service station where no one else was sure of the source of the noise but all agreed it shouldn't be driven any farther. Luckily, my daughter's in-laws were accompanying us, driving her 1965 Monza 110, so I hauled out the tow-strap and we towed the PU the remaining 40 miles via old US 66. Went that way because we were told a tow-strap on I-40 would net us a $150.00 fine. (I highly recommend a nylon tow-strap, it sure takes a lot of the jerk out.) Anyway --- Next morning at breakfast in a nearby restaurant, very disgusted with the situation and with myself for not bringing my CORSA directory, I overheard some guys at the next table discussing cars, so I asked if they knew any Corvair nuts in the area. They said, no, but the gentleman at the table on the other side may since he owned the local Chevrolet dealership. He didn't know any "nuts" but promised full cooperation from his people in getting me back on the road. At this point I still didn't know the real problem but did know I would need gaskets so I went by, met the parts people, ordered crankcase cover gaskets, and told him I would call ASAP. I didn't even have any tools with me on this trip, but luckily Mike, my son-in-law, has a pretty good tool box, so we started tearing down. In just a few minutes we had the crankcase cover off and everything looked great except for one piece of a ring about 1/4 inch long. When I installed the engine last Spring Ike told me if I had trouble with the engine it would probably be No. 1 cylinder. Pulled No 1 plug; oily but no other symptoms; No 3 the same, but No 5 was broken. At the last tune-up I had installed AC No 44FFS plugs, which I believe prevented catastrophic damage. We turned the engine over by hand and noticed that the piston top didn't move. So I went to the phone, ordered a jug assembly and 1 set of upper gaskets. The parts man thought he would have everything ready by 5 pm, so I cleaned up and got ready to attend the graduation after all. At 5 pm I learned there was not a jug assembly in all of Oklahoma City, but one was located in Ft. Worth, Texas and should be in by 9 am Friday by bus. That evening we relaxed at Smoky Hollow on Northeast 50th St. Your choice was either steak or chicken. The steak was excellent. Next morning at 9, ready to go, I picked up the jug, went to a nearby machine shop to have the rod installed and tried to borrow or rent a 3/8-drive torque wrench. This led me to a small shop at the edge of Edmond where I finally found the local Corvair expert. He had pistons (the cylinder was not damaged in any way -- the piston had separated in the oil ring groove). Anyway after chatting a bit about our favorite subject and promising to send him info on CORSA, he loaned me the necessary tool and away I went. The kids were to be checked out of their apartment at noon and the truck still had to be loaded. Did a quick plastigage check with the new rod bearings, threw it all together and at about 3 pm I hit the starter. It went "uunhh" -- and locked. Back into the crankcase where I discovered another piece of ring that somehow was overlooked before, removed it without much difficulty, but the engine still would not turn over. It would turn about 75 degrees. That piston was the wrong piston. At 4 pm I called Harley Sharpe to ask what pistons he had. He didn't know but reminded me that he closed at 6 as did the machine shop. To make a long story short, I walked out of the machine shop at 5:30 with the correct piston in the new jug with rod assembled. I had experience. (Everything was then delayed while locating and purchasing drop light and 75 feet of extension cord. This overhaul took place in the apartment parking lot.) Everything was finally buttoned up and the truck loaded by 9:30. We made a fast trip to the college dorm for a shower and to Long John's for something to eat. They quit serving at 10:30 and we got there at 10:20. We left about 11 and drove to the south side of Oklahoma City before finding an open service station. About 10 minutes after leaving Long John's, the truck started missing and would ping terribly and lose power. No 3 plug wire had blown out, which caused most of the missing but we didn't have time for carb synchronization, checking timing and all that necessary stuff. The truck would run beautifully at road speed but didn't want to idle at all. We were headed for Weatherford, Texas (near Fort Worth) where Mike has a job. We had all their belongings on our PU, Susan's car, Mike's car and his brother's VW bus. Now we all had to be in Albuquerque by Sunday evening, so we drove on, arriving at Weatherford at 4 am Saturday. Got their belongings into their new home, then went back out to my wife's brother's home to do some refining to the tune-up of the previous night, while my wife went to Arlington to pick up several boxes of stuff for the craft shop where she teaches painting. Went through the valves again, reset timing and synchronized the carbs. The truck now ran much better but still didn't idle too well. Pinging had gone away; I attributed the ping to some sharp edges I had left in the head after some very careful machine work I had done with a cold chisel. We had a very enjoyable dinner and left for Albuquerque via Amarillo at 4 pm, drove all night switching drivers between the PU and the VW bus; Mike and Susan left both their cars in Weatherford and planned to drive a U-Haul from Albuquerque back to Weatherford. Goodie, goodie, I'll finally get the other stall of my garage back. Two things are now certain: (1) my CORSA directory is now permanently located in the PU, and (2) I'll never button-up another engine without rotating the crank a full 360 degrees at least once. The engine still doesn't want to idle properly all the time. I believe at least one valve must have been bent very slightly and when it is rotated just right it idles fine, otherwise it doesn't. It sure was a lot of fun though, to have somebody come up at nearly every stop, wanting to buy that pickup. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== It Was Forty-five Years Ago THINK YOU'VE GOT INSURANCE PROBLEMS BY PETE SKONY (AIRHORN, CHICAGO, DECEMBER 1976.) If you've ever had a run-in with an insurance company, an item in a recent AUTOCAR, (the English automobile weekly), proves that they sometimes receive as they give. It seems that Gerard Gasson, a Frenchman, driving a Citroen, was approaching a railroad crossing when he skidded and stalled across the track. As he and his wife left the car to get help, the gates came down for the arrival of an express freight train. The engineer and the fireman lept from the train as it hit the Citroen, carried it along the track, ripping up some 100 meters, left the rails, hit the side of the bridge it was supposed to cross, and plunged into the Rhone-Marne Canal, taking with it 21 freight cars. Seems the train was carrying a large shipment of beer and soup, which turned the canal into a large vat of beery soup, causing the untimely death of hundreds of choice fish -- either by shock or by drunkenness. For nine days, all rail travel, including passenger trains, had to be re-routed, six cranes worked for two weeks to clear the wreckage, and the canal had to be drained and repaired. Gasson's insurance company received a bill of almost 6 million dollars, to pay for one locomotive, 21 freight cars, one bridge, 100 meters of track, 60 buses to carry passengers from the wreck, the cost of the previously mentioned repairs, compensation to 40 barge operators, and claims by the soup and beer companies. Also, members of the train crew were claiming medical expenses. However, the real kicker of the story is one that all of us insured by American companies might think about. Because of his accident, Gasson's annual insurance premium went from $30 to $33.75! ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Owners Talk about their 1964 Corvairs RON -- I was in the Air Force stationed in Japan. I was due to rotate back to the states in a few months. When I got in the service I had left my car with my family, but after two years I knew I needed something newer and now I could afford a new car. But, what car to get? Maybe I was primed to try something radical and I read about a new car with a supercharger -- the Corvair. That sounded exotic. I could try that. I did some reading and talking to other guys and was told that there were companies who would order a car for a serviceman rotating back to the states and deliver it to you when you arrived. I ordered a Chevrolet Corvair Spyder coupe. Solid black. The company took care of the financing and when I got off the plane from Japan I knew where to go to pick up my new car. I drove it all the way from the west coast to Dayton, Ohio where I would be continuing my career at Wright-Patterson AFB. It was a great way to see the country! In Ohio the turbo Corvair proved to be a fine car, winter or summer. No antifreeze. You couldn't really call it a drag racer, but you'd be surprised at how many hot cars you could outrun, especially if you could get ahead of them on a curvy stretch of road. I ran off and left a lot of big iron on those great Ohio back roads. ALAN -- I was about to go on active duty with the Air Force as a second lieutenant and I thought I would need a car. I had never owned a car and had little driving experience. I just went to a convenient Chevrolet dealer and looked at the cars on the lot. One new car was small and somehow different and seemed to be just what I wanted. The dealer took care of all the financial details, I wrote a check and drove away in a 1964 Corvair Spyder 2-door. I knew nothing about cars and didn't really care that the engine was in the back and was air cooled and turbocharged. I just drove it, and it drove very well. Sometime during 1965 I met another second lieutenant, Jim, and we got to be friends. We both lived in the junior officers quarters on base and our habit was to take our meals at the hospital cafeteria, just because it was convenient. We met a lieutenant colonel who lived on base and who regularly ate lunch at the cafeteria. He was a character with an unlimited store of tall tales from his years in the service and he was happy to swap lies with about a half dozen brown bar lieutenants. When he found out I owned a Corvair Spyder he was in awe and proceeded to tell me things about it that I had no idea about! I was from California and I found things in Ohio were just different from anything I was used to. On weekends I tried to see the sights of the midwest and I'd drive around, looking for interesting places to visit. It happened that my new friend Jim was from the south and also wanted to explore the midwest. We went to a few places together. One thing I remember in Dayton was the Wright Brothers' bicycle shop. Another was a series of "Indian mounds" in the country near Dayton. Jim and I got the idea that we should go to Detroit and see the Henry Ford museum. I had always heard about the Great Lakes and the famous Soo Locks. We decided to take a long weekend trip to Detroit, Chicago and northern Michigan. Mine was the newer car and Jim could drive a clutch transmission, so we decided to go in the Corvair. The trip worked out very well and we saw parts of the midwest we'd probably never see again. The bridge at Sault St. Marie was amazing, the Soo Locks, well, maybe not what I expected. Now, this story has a future development neither of us knew about at the time. Jim didn't seem to be a car enthusiast, nor was I. He just had a Ford. And I don't remember that he showed any interest in my car with its turbocharged rear engine. But I remember that within a year he discovered sports cars and took a charter flight to visit Europe for three weeks, and came back with an English sports car. And after another year he managed to get an assignment to Alaska. He sold the sports car and bought a car more suitable for the cold north -- a new Corvair. I can only imagine that our trip in my Spyder influenced him to get a turbocharged Corvair. TITO -- I was a lieutenant in the Air Force and wanted a new car with a little more character than the old Chevies my family favored. A Corvair convertible filled the bill. It had the turbo engine too, with 150 horsepower. But it was no drag racer. I found that out the hard way. Late one night I was returning home and was surprised by a light that turned yellow. By habit I hit the brakes with a screech, but immediately continued across the intersection before the red light as there was no traffic from any direction. But I had barely got through the intersection when a cop came out of nowhere, his red light flashing. I stopped and "What's wrong, officer?" brought only a scowl. "You were drag racing and that rates a ticket," he said. "No, I wasn't," I said, "I just braked but then continued on the yellow light, no one was coming." "I heard you squealing out, you were drag racing," he said. "Officer, this car doesn't have the horsepower to squeal the tires when accelerating, I couldn't have been drag racing. Anyway, there's nobody here I could have been racing with." Nope, the cop heard that tire squeal and he knew I was drag racing and I got that ticket. Later, in traffic court, the judge listened to my story. The officer wasn't there to tell his side. "A Corvair, eh," the judge said. "I didn't know you could drag race those things. Case dismissed." So I had the last laugh, but you know, you can't really drag race a Spyder. Not without mistreating the clutch! And that was something I'd never do. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ============================================================================ | September 2021 | October 2021 | November 2021 | | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa | | 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 | 1 2 3 4 5 6 | | 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 | 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 | | 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 | 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 | 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 | | 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 | 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 | 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 | | 26 27 28 29 30 | 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 | 28 29 30 | | | 31 | | ============================================================================ WED 01 SEP == Round Trip on the Rail Runner between Santa Fe and Belen. New members were Tony Berbig and Linda Soukup, tired of long Minnesota winters. John Wiker was recalled by the Air Force for ROTC duty. Tarmo reported on a great car museum tour. We went to inspect Mark Domzalski's new garage, designed for restoring Corvairs. Articles from the Chicago AIRHORN by Charlie Biddle told about the 1975 Convention in Seattle. We printed several colorful mountain scenes photographed by president David Huntoon. 2007 V.33 N.9 #384 COVER: Several members met the Great American Race cars and drivers. Ollie was presented with a First Aid kit. Dan Palmer showed LEDs and wiring for dash lighting. Jim said many chapters were emailing their newsletters, not mailing paper copies. President Ray asked members to report favorite grammar or spelling errors. Robert reported an Autozone visit where Anne Mae was poorly treated but the regional manager made everything okay. Sad fact of life: ladies don't get treated fairly at auto parts stores. John Wiker reported on several car shows and the Car Council picnic. Ollie Scheflow reported on the Old Route 66 cleanup and Sylvan wrote that he appreciated the "April Fool" features in our newsletters. He said the April 2007 issue was the best yet. Steve Goodman fixed a vague stick shift. Vickie Hall described the picnic with words and photos. We learned that Debbie Pleau died in Colorado just as she and Dennis were preparing to move back to California. Debbie's 17-years of contributions to CNM and to the Pikes Peak Corvair Club cannot be exaggerated. Among her accomplishments: organizing the CORSA National Convention in Albuquerque in 1995-1996. We still miss her. 2000 V.26 N.9 #300 COVER: We camped out at Ruth's cabin in the Pecos. A cartoon has Ralph of the Green Party making a joke at the expense of two political candidates and our favorite car. Wendell reported a bank balance of $6069. We said goodbye to the Pleaus who were headed for Colorado Springs. We planned a new CNM front license plate. Mark Domzalski was re-elected president of CORSA. There would be a 75th anniversary celebration of the completion of Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles. President Hurley Wilvert told us we had four nominees for the October election. Many events were reviewed, mostly car shows of one kind or another. The Car Council's list of activities for the rest of the year took up half a page. Debbie Deck reported on the Pecos Campout at Ruth's mountain cabin. Anne Mae Gold told us about Corvair Ladies and their activities. Steve Gongora reported on the Galles Car Show in which three CNM participants each won a nice new $100 bill. A letter from Wendell told about irritating car troubles on the way to San Diego and a really scary episode with Ilva and a stroke and a heart attack. 1993 V.19 N.9 #216 COVER: A Ford Model T. Our president was Del and Will reported $1439 in the bank. Guests were Scott Kimball, Ted Yachik and the Huntoons from the Chicago club. We discussed plans for the State Fair, a campout, a Dukes baseball game, a Funkhana, the Great Western Fan Belt Toss and a trip to Color Works in Los Lunas. LeRoy told about a new organization aimed at keeping old cars from being legislated off the road. Del reported that we got the bid from CORSA for the 1996 convention! We had several tech tips from the Internet this month. Frank Lux had a hard-to-find rattle when the nut came off a front shock absorber and lodged inside the coil spring where it bounced around. Raymond Pease replaced the inner speedo cable on a 1968 car only to find it was 3/4 inch too short. Stuart Pearl reported on the brand-new GM Saturn. Steve Cole discussed modes of crank failure (torsional or bending) and how to tell which happened to your broken crank. Mike Kellstrand had a rough running engine. Cyberspace citizens suggested causes and fixes: bryan@mitre.org suggested backing off the timing and checking for jammed advance weights; kdrolt@Athena.mit.edu suggested a clogged fuel screen in the gas tank or clogged filters in the carbs; smc9782@zeus.tamu.edu suggested it might be a vacuum leak in the crossover tube connectors. Steve Robinette asked the function of a thick red wire in the engine compartment. John Dozsa told about a speedometer repair shop in Baltimore. 1986 V.12 N.9 #132 COVER: A newspaper photo of five-year CORSA member from France Gali Bouhadiba at the CORSA National Convention in Grand Rapids. At the August meeting we had $827 in the bank and a visitor was long-distance CNM member Jack Bryan of Dallas. Jerry showed us a video he made during the Montrose Tri-State. Bill Reider reported on his trip to the Grand Rapids convention. Bill said traffic everywhere was moving at 60 to 70 in spite of the 55-mph speed limit. He joined in the fun and was stopped in Kansas for doing 46 in a 30-mph zone. Karen provided three more stories in her series of reports on "My First Car" so we found out how Elliott Knapp, Kristin Romer and Dean Sanborn were introduced to a 1926 Buick, a 1965 Monza and a 1918 Model T Ford respectively. Francis told us how to remove the emergency brake cable from the wheel backing plate: tighten a small hose clamp around the three locking protrusions, then tap with a hammer and screwdriver. Francis was a great one for clever improvised tools. 1979 V.5 N.9 #48 COVER: A Chevrolet advertisement: bikers were admiring a shiny new 1965 Monza sedan. We were planning our State Fair car show, an Aspencade and October elections. We discussed CORSA's 100 percent membership rule. This issue had no tech tips. Your editor asked whether it was a good idea for the government to require air bags in new cars in light of certain safety considerations. Today no one thinks of any inherent dangers from air bags. I wonder why. ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== ======~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~=====~====== Enchanted Corvairs Newsletter is published monthly by Corvairs of New Mexico, chartered Chapter #871 of CORSA, the Corvair Society of America.
