Description: The BioVan is a mobile exhibit designed to teach students and the community about Rio Grande ecology and conservation of the ecosystems tied to our river. BioVan volunteers meet at local elementary schools to teach children about the plants and animals that depend on the unique habitats created by the Rio Grande from its headwaters in Colorado to its terminus at the Gulf of Mexico. Volunteers are also needed to lead elementary school children on field hikes through the Bosque where they will identify traces of animal activity and collect benthic macroinvertebrates from the river.

All knowledge necessary for successful volunteering is taught on-the-job.

Volunteers make their own schedules, so it is a perfect opportunity for students interested in ecology or science education. Perks include free admission to all BioPark facilities (Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Garden, Train Rides), discounted meals from BioPark cafes, letters of recommendation for graduate school application, hands-on teaching experience, and invitations to BioPark volunteer appreciation events.

Qualifications: *Must be 18 or older.
*Because we work with children, must pass a criminal background check.
*Most volunteer opportunities occur on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (and occasionally on weekends). Although flexible, volunteers are generally asked to commit to 4-6 hours shifts.
*Interested in life sciences and willing to learn about Rio Grande ecology.

For more information or to sign up, contact Megan Workman, BioVan Facilitator at (505)764-6242. Volunteers are needed ASAP--I hope to hear from you soon!
