Experimental Collaboration  and Interaction with fellow Albuquerque artists

Begun in the Spring of 2007, we (Betsy Greenlee, Fred Yost, Jaci Fisher, Leila Hall, Jeanine Allen, Elaine Scott, Gaye Garrison and Jeff Potter) were inspired by previous artist/ writer collaborations, most notably the "Scribes Eight" and we strive to explore artistic genres we generally have not thought about attempting.  Abstract art came to mind and we chose to meet every six weeks and share our individual efforts at "making" abstract art from a commonly agreed "project" scope discussed at the previous meeting.  Herein describes our journey.  Below is a chronological listing of web pages made from our past meetings.  Click on any meeting to see our efforts.     Return to the Art Group Home Page

CURRENT - December 14, 2008   Project - Blind Contour Drawing

Rod Groves Project  Rod's notes (12-14-08):  "I did two sketches, one black and white and the other attempting an abstract color background. Both were on illustration board which I gessoed and then scraped with a seriated edge to provide some texture. This provided a good drawing surface. The black and white sketch I thought was more successful, probably because blind contour drawing is a drawing technique and the simpler background allows for greater interest to focus on the line.
Rod Groves "Pot with Persimmons"
I recently took a workshop in which the artist said she often used line in paintings but that line is more interesting if it is varied, thick then thin, sometimes discontinuing, sometimes shaded, etc. With this in mind I attempted to get greater variety in the line in both sketches, using black acrylic. Again I thought this was more successful in the black and white drawing where shading could be more notable. Finally I used some collage (corrugated) to add further interest with the black and white, an effect I also liked.

In general the contour line drawing exercise is fun and interesting though it is a challenge to use it as the basis of a painting and not just a sketching exercise.
"

Elaine Scott Project     Elaine's notes (12-14-08):  "Studio Stool - Acrylic on canvas.  After doing a freeform drawing I decided to use the sketched form as a painting"

Jeff Potter Project  Jeff's notes (12-14-2008):  "I struggled with this project initially trying to scope out interesting subject matter.  With our convalescing dog Zosia, I found her resting postures a good subject within the short time frame I would do the blind contour pencil drawings.  She was wearing a protective cape which added to the interesting contours.  I did have to reposition my pencil occasionally.  All the sketches were torn or cut out and positioned over white, gray or black paper as simple collages.  Image 1 captures her unhappiness having to wear the cape and was converted to Black & White, Image 2 is another of Zosia, while I also did two sketches of our other dog, Azor, while he rested, although he was constantly re-positioning himself (Images 3 & 4.)  Finally, I used these sketches to make a oil collage painting seen in Image 5."
