Experimental Collaboration  and Interaction with fellow Albuquerque artists

Begun in the Spring of 2007, we (Betsy Greenlee, Fred Yost, Jaci Fisher, Leila Hall, Jeanine Allen, Elaine Scott, Gaye Garrison and Jeff Potter) were inspired by previous artist/ writer collaborations, most notably the "Scribes Eight" and we strive to explore artistic genres we generally have not thought about attempting.  Abstract art came to mind and we chose to meet every six weeks and share our individual efforts at "making" abstract art from a commonly agreed "project" scope discussed at the previous meeting.  Herein describes our journey.

Below is a chronological listing of web pages made from our past meetings.  Click on any meeting to see our efforts.

June 8 meeting was a continuation of architectural subject abstraction

Elaine Scott Project     Elaine's notes (6-08-08):  "I started with a photo of a domed house I saw in Bernalillo.  The first painting was my start towards abstraction and in my second I concentrated more on shapes and shadows. Both are acrylic on canvas. My 3rd dome abstraction was done using oil pastel on Yupo paper."

Leila Hall Project 7-20-08  Leila's Notes " The variations on the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao wore me out, so I made a dashing attempt at the Golden Gate Bridge on rough pastel paper that helped with the fog!

The July 20th meeting was our efforts to do any type of abstraction

on a larger surface, e.g. 18" x 24" or larger.

Betsy Greenlee Project   Betsy's notes: " the first one was an attempt to abstract a landscape reflected in still water, using more or less realistic color--it began as a horizontal, but once I stopped thinking about the reference photo and tried to think just in terms of shapes and brush strokes, I decided I liked the vertical orientation better. The second  began with generalized landscape elements but was intended to end up essentially nonobjective, so I decided to use nonrepresentational color, thinking that might help to distance the image from the idea of landscape.  Since acrylics are a new medium for me, at this point I'm still trying to experiment with washes vs. opaque areas and just learn more about how to use the paint."

Leila Hall  project 7-20-08  Leila's Notes: "For July, I started with blocks of colors and just moved where they took me."

Jeff Potter Project  Jeff's notes (7-20-08):  "Taking another page from my ongoing Hidden Mountain Aerial series, I explored with pastel or Sharpie sketches some possible scenes.  I chose Sketch 1.  I then used an 18" x 24" piece of blue tint Great American pastel paper.   I applied gold-tinted pumice and adhesive glue using a palette knife at a 45 degree angle.  I further scored lines into the pumice.  After allowing it to dry, it was painted using primarily NuPastel colors and some washes with Turpenoid.

Elaine Scott Project     Elaine's notes (7-20-08):  "As you can tell I really got into this assignment because there were no limitations as far as what to paint so I just started layering colors and worked with what came out of that. The painting I had the most trouble with was Floating Reflections because I started with an idea from a photo from a lake in Yosemite. My attachment to that idea has limited my ability to go beyond and so I do not feel the painting is complete.

Elaine Scott "Floating Reflections"                                                           Elaine Scott "Evolving Transformations"
Evolving transformations 'evolved' many times as I painted and changed colors and shapes at least 4 times! It felt like the many stages of butterfly transformation and as if it may still need to evolve. (Acrylics on 30X40 canvas).  Sunrisings was my first attempt at layering thin washes of acrylic paint on a triangle canvas.
Dreamweaving was more use of thin layers of acrylic paint using a gessoed masonite surface.  Abstract feathers was again using thin layers of acrylics but
this time on a pastel board which produced yet another effect.  My tendency to overwork got in the way and I lost some aspects by not stepping back sooner.
Floating reflections is still a work in progress as it doesn't feel quite right."

 Fred Yost Project    Fred's notes (7-20-08):  ""

Our next project is to use a night scene and create an abstract painting, drawing, whatever you'd like to do.    Next meeting is Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at 1 PM.
