Components of a Distance Education System

Most traditional programs of instruction in education are designed and developed by a single individual. The design of a program of instruction to be delivered using the WWW is much different. The components of such a system are listed below with a brief description of each:

• First is a source of knowledge from which to build the program. Information is derived from individuals, organizations, the needs of students as well as philosophy and history.

• Second, and very important to the success of the program is the design. Most designers today follow a preset program that explores, in detail, the subilties of designing a program for success. Included are discussions of the medium to be used, what is involved in the program and how evaluation of learning will be assessed.

• Next is consideration of the delivery medium. In this case the medium is the WWW. Other mediums that can be used include print, audio, radio, TV, computer software, audio and video conferencing.

• A critical link to success of programs delivered using distance education technologies is that of interaction. Because distance learners can easily become isolated, feel discounted, much effort is made to ensure learner support, through interaction, is in place. Included is interaction with the instructor, other students, tutors, counselors, technical support and the medium used, in this case the WWW.

• The last component is that of the learning environment itself. This will be very different from what most individuals are used to and requires an adjustment. Generally, the environment will be either at the students home or workplace. Both have their distractions that can occur which requires the student to identify the time and place that will work best for them.

Given the above components all being in place and working for the best interests of the student, their still must be an organization in place with the policy and structure to control and administer the program.
