ART ED 530/430   Studio Art in the Schools: Printmaking K-12+

Course Description:   This course explores the teaching of printmaking at both the elementary and secondary levels through the study of relief printmaking (stamping, linocuts, styrofoam cuts, collagraphs), intaglio (wax plates, Mylar plates, solar plates), and monotypes.  Students will also explore various ways to teach printmaking and ways to conduct a studio critique at the secondary level.

Methods of Instruction:  PowerPoint presenations, class discussions, studio work, using reflective exercises for studio critiques, and rubric assessment. 

Course Objectives:
Students can expect to -
1.  Become proficient with multiple methods of printmaking for grades K-12+ related to stamping, relief, and intaglio.
2.  Become proficient with specific printmaking tools including the barren, etching needle, brayer, linoleum cutter, and printing press.
3.  Explore the artistic potential of multiple methods of printmaking through the creation and transfer of different compositions.
4.  Learn how to reflect and critique their own prints and the prints of others
5.  Learn how to create a rubric to assess the completed prints of others

Assignments: 
Completion of eight different printmaking techniques - 80 points
    ( Found object stamping, collagraph, eraser, styrofoam, linoleum, milk carton intaglio, monotype, and solar)
Completion of eight reflective papers on each studio project - 40 points
Participation in studio critiques - 40 points
