Week 1 (October 9) Read: Gangi, Chapters 1,2,3

Introduction to poetry (including nursery rhymes), award-winning books, storytelling, fantasy and science fiction, the concept of genre, and how to select and evaluate literature, with Prof. Leslie Chamberlin.  Assignments: earliest memories, library visit, book selection, introduction to book-talking through demonstration on selected science fiction, fantasy, and Newbery-award-winning books from which you will choose to read next time.  Read aloud: Paul Fleischman’s Half-a-Moon Inn

 

Week 2 (October 23) Read Gangi Chapters 5 (Poetry), 6 (Drama), 8 (Informational books), and 12 (Fantasy and Science Fiction)

Poetry anthology due.  Bring and be prepared to discuss: your selected book of science fiction or fantasy, and chosen award-winning book, and the picture book you selected in your library visit.  Writing assignments due: (1) library visit and book selection, (2) earliest memories, (3) poetry anthology and poems to share, and (4) book log so far.  Introduction to:  picture books, informational books, biography and memoir, historical fiction, and drama. In class: Storytelling and Book talks.

 

Week 3 (November 6) Read: Gangi, Chapters 4 (Picture books), 9 (Historical realism), and 10 (Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir).

Writing assignments due: (1) Informational book activity and (2) picture book analysis, and possibly additional log examples.  Bring and be prepared to discuss: information books, biographies, historical realism, and picture books.  Introduction to:  Folklore, Contemporary realism. In class: Storytelling and book talks.

 

Week 4 (November 13) Read: Gangi, Chapters 7 (Folklore), and 11 (Contemporary realism)

Writing assignments due:  Folktale comparison.  Creative response (see Class Participation Checklist item #2).  Bring and be prepared to discuss: folktales, and books of contemporary realism, creative response. In class: Storytelling, book talks, creative response presentations.

 

 

Week 5 (November 20) Read: Gangi, Chapter 13 (Multicultural Celebrations).  Group presentations.  Writing assignment due: (1) Description of your multicultural celebration project.

(2) Book log and Class participation checklists. In class: Final projects and finishing up storytelling, book talks.
