M.A. Checklist for Graduation

  • Complete any prerequisites:
  • Introduction to Linguistic Analysis (292).
    English Phonetics (303).
    Phonological Analysis (304).
    Grammatical Analysis (322).
    Language in Society (331).
    Psychology of Language (367).

  • Complete 15 hours of core coursework:
  • Graduate course in phonological theory (502 or 503).graduate course grammatical theory (522 or 523).
    A dvanced course in psycholinguistics (e.g., 469, 562, 563, 565, 566, 569).
    A dvanced course in sociolinguistics (e.g., 432, 433, 539).
    S eminar with an educational or theoretical orientation (e.g., 554, 555).

  • Complete elective coursework.
  • Select thesis (Plan I) or coursework (Plan II) option.
  • File "Application for Candidacy for the Master's Degree" (by the end of the semester prior to taking the comprehensive examination).
  • File department's "M.A. Comprehensive Exam Areas and Supervising Faculty" form (by the third week of the semester in which you wish to take the exam). The department submits the "Announcement of Examination" form to OGS at least two weeks before the exam.
  • File "Notification of Intent to Graduate" (by the third week of your final semester).
    Complete comprehensive examination.
  • M.A. Examination Committee members submit:

    Report of Examination form.
    Department's Assessment of M.A. Comprehensive Examination form for student outcomes assessment.

For those who prepare a thesis

  1. File the Department's M.A. Thesis Committee form (by the third week of the semester in which you plan to defend your Thesis).
  2. File "Announcement of Final Examination for Thesis" (at least two weeks before the thesis defense.)
  3. Submit two copies of thesis to OGS with thesis binding fee and documentation and one copy to Graduate Secretary.
  4. Committee members submit:

    Report of Final Examination for Thesis form.
    "Report on Thesis or Dissertation" form ("gray sheet")
    Department's Assessment of Master's Thesis form for student outcomes assessment.
    Thesis director submits Certification of Final Form of a Thesis or Dissertation form.
