General InformationThe Department of Linguistics offers M.A. degree with particular strengths in functional and cognitive approaches to linguistic theory, Southwest languages (including Spanish and Native American languages of the region), American Sign Language (ASL), sociolinguistics (especially in bilingual and multicultural settings), and psycholinguistics. Graduate students in a number of other departments, especially Anthropology, Education, Psychology, Spanish and Portuguese, and Speech and Hearing Sciences may develop concentrations in linguistics at the master's level. Students interested in graduate work in linguistics in another department are advised to consult the Chair of the Department of Linguistics as well as the department to which they are applying.
