General Information

The Department of Linguistics offers M.A. degree with particular strengths in functional and cognitive approaches to linguistic theory, Southwest languages (including Spanish and Native American languages of the region), American Sign Language (ASL), sociolinguistics (especially in bilingual and multicultural settings), and psycholinguistics.

Graduate students in a number of other departments, especially Anthropology, Education, Psychology, Spanish and Portuguese, and Speech and Hearing Sciences may develop concentrations in linguistics at the master's level. Students interested in graduate work in linguistics in another department are advised to consult the Chair of the Department of Linguistics as well as the department to which they are applying.

Concentrations/Emphases in Linguistics


In addition to the MA in general linguistics, students may specialize in the following areas at the master’s level. Students interested in pursuing these areas are admitted to the general Linguistics program but pursue coursework in their chosen area of study.
