Admissions Information

Students who have completed a baccalaureate degree should apply for admission to the M.A. program, not to the Ph.D. program. Completion of a master's degree is a prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program.

To apply for the M.A. or Ph.D. program, if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, fill out the online application form found at the Office of Graduate Studies website. Students are strongly encouraged to use the online application form. If you need a paper form sent to you, contact the Office of Graduate Studies at the above link.

When compiling your application materials, be sure to send the online form, and application fee to the Office of Graduate Studies. Have copies of your transcripts sent directly to the Admissions office. Send a second copy of your transcripts, three letters of reccomendation and your letter of intent directly to the Department of Linguistics. Application forms and procedures are clearly outlined here.

If you need more information, or assistance with the application process, contact the Administrative Assistant.

International students must submit application materials to UNM's Office of International Admissions. These materials are sent directly to potential students by International Admissions.

Three letters of recommendation and a letter of intent are required parts of the application packet for all potential students. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required by the Department of Linguistics.

Deadlines

All materials must be received by the following deadlines for best consideration for admission:
M.A. Program: December 15 for Fall or Summer admission, October 31 for Spring admission.

All applications seeking financial aid must be received by December 15.

Transfer of Credits

The transfer of credit from another university or from non-degree status is not automatic. With the approval of the Graduate Advisor, up to 50% of the M.A. coursework requirements may be transfer credits, provided that (a) the coursework is judged to be appropriate to your program of studies, and (b) the coursework is completed within the required five-year period.

(Note: Quarter hours are converted to .67 semester hours each.)
(Note: A course that has been counted toward a previous degree may not be counted again for the master's degree; if such a course is used to fulfill a core requirement, you should substitute an elective to meet the minimum coursework requirement.)

Please contact the department for more detailed information on admission to the M.A. program.
