The minimum prerequisites for the M.A. with an emphasis in Computational Linguistics are 18 hours of basic linguistics, including introductory linguistics, phonetics, phonological analysis, grammatical analysis, introductory sociolinguistics, and introductory psycholinguistics. In addition, the following computer science courses are required.

  • CS 151 Computer Programming Fundamentals
  • CS 201 Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science
  • CS 251 Introduction to Data Structures
  • CS 257 Nonimperative Programming
  • CS 351 Design of Large Programs

Candidates for the M.A. degree must complete 15 hours of coursework in linguistics, including one 400 or 500 level course in each of the following areas: phonology, syntax, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and theoretical or applied linguistics. In addition, we recommend that the candidate complete the following 9 hours in computer science:

  • CS 438 The Science of Intelligent Systems
  • CS 451 Programming Paradigms
  • CS 427/527 Principles of Artificially Intelligent Machines

The remaining required hours are selected by the candidate in consultation with the Linguistics Department’s Graduate Advisor in collaboration with an advisor in Computer Science. A thesis option is also available.
