General InformationThe Department of Linguistics offers the Ph.D. degree with particular strengths in functional and cognitive approaches to linguistic theory, Southwest languages (including Spanish and Native American languages of the region), American Sign Language (ASL), sociolinguistics (especially in bilingual and multicultural settings), and psycholinguistics. The Department also actively supports the doctoral program in Educational Linguistics offered through the Division of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies (LLSS) in the College of Education. Educational Linguistics is an interdisciplinary doctoral program administered by the College of Education. No baccalaureate or Master's program is offered. More information about this program may be obtained by calling (505) 277-0437. Graduate students in a number of other departments, especially Anthropology, Education, Psychology, Spanish and Portuguese, and Speech and Hearing Sciences may develop concentrations in linguistics at the doctoral level. Students interested in graduate work in linguistics in another department are advised to consult the Chair of the Department of Linguistics as well as the department to which they are applying. Concentrations/EmphasesThe Department offers a concentration in Computational Linguistics at the doctoral level. Students interested in pursuing these areas are admitted to the general Linguistics program but pursue coursework in their chosen area of study.
