BA in Linguistics: Concentration in Signed Language Studies

The B.A. in Linguistics with a Concentration in Signed Language Studies allows undergraduate students interested in American Sign Language (ASL) to focus on the linguistic study of signed languages.

Requirements

The B.A. in Linguistics with a Concentration in Signed Language Studies requires 33 hours (24 in required courses, 9 in approved electives) and four semesters of American Sign Language in fulfillment of the undergraduate foreign language requirement.

Required courses are:

  • SIGN 305 Signed Language Linguistics (prerequisite LING 101 or permission of instructor)
  • LING 322 Grammatical Analysis
  • SIGN 352 Language and Culture in the Deaf Community
  • SIGN 355 Deaf History and Literature
  • LING 367 Psychology of Language
  • LING 412 Morphosyntax
  • LING 425 Semantic Analysis or LING 429 Discourse Analysis
  • LING 331 Language in Society or LING 359 Language and Culture
