            The Clarke family of Squire’s Cove, near Burgeo, is an important early family, being the only one in that particular settlement for quite some time. Certainly these people were hardy pioneers, capable of living on their own (not much different from most other Newfoundlanders of the time). John Clarke, may have been a deserter from the ship Carteretia, master John Warren, in 1836, which puts him in the area at the right time to meet and marry his future bride, Susannah Lushman, living in or near New Harbour.

            Because John Clarke is not an uncommon name, specifically placing our John Clarke on the ship Carteretia is not possible and so his origins are unknown and this is still a work in progress.

1. John¹ Clarke, died after 1869. He married, before 1847 in Squire's Cove, Susanna Lushman, born about 1827 in New Harbour; died 23 Nov 1904 in Burgeo; buried 25 Nov 1904 in Burgeo, daughter of Thomas Lushman and Susannah McDonald.
