A family which has long intrigued researchers for South Coast families is the Lushman
family. This family has intermarried with a number of others who have lived close to New
Harbour, Grey River, Burgeo, Ramea, and Francois.
1. Thomas1 Lushman, born about 1800 in England; died about 1879.
He married first, about
1822 in Hermitage Bay,
Susannah McDonald, born 1800/09 in Hermitage Bay;
died about 1874
in Little River;
married second, about 1850 in Franklin, St. Mary's Parish, Louisiana,
an
unknown woman. Thomas left New Harbour with William, his eldest son, probably in the fall,
possibly shortly before Christmas of 1833, walking overland to another community, where the
fishing schooner, Mechanic, captain John Russell, was preparing fish for storage in the hold and
for another trip to the banks. Thomas left William with a family named Bennett, living at that
community and he and Mr. Bennett signed on with Captain Russell for the season. Having fished
for the season, Mr. Bennett and his family, as well as Thomas and William, shipped out with the
Mechanic for Marblehead, Mass., USA, leaving his family behind forever.
Thomas and William arrived at Marblehead in the spring of 1834 and Thomas placed his
son with the Thomas Follett family to learn the trade of shoemaking (cordwainer). In the
meantime, Thomas went north to Gloucester to practice his trade of fishing for a few years until
1838 when he returned again to Marblehead. He then moved William from the Follett family to
the Mason family to continue his apprentice-ship and left Marblehead, never to return.
He travelled to Louisiana where he wrote back to William, in 1842, to come to him but
William did not receive the letter since it was held from him by his employer. Being unaware of
his letter having gone astray, Thomas moved north, apparently coming to Kentucky, marrying
again, and having a daughter, Molly.
