UNM General Library - Library Technology Development Y2k Preparedness
Factsheet
Overview
Issues
Current Status
Frequently Asked Questions
The Y2k problem in computing was brought about partly by shortcomings in
programming practices of the past 30 or so years, and partly by the inability
of some older personal computers systems to properly detect and indicate the
change of date between the dates of December 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000.
The purpose of LTD's Y2k Project is to prepare the General Library
(Zimmerman, PML, FAL, CSEL) for the year 2000. It will involve checking all
servers, network connections and desktop computers in the library system.
This will entail updating the LTD hardware inventory database, performing a
maintenance/compliance check on all server and microcomputer systems and
preparing the equipment to properly deal with the Y2k problem.
Server Issues
The hardware and software that supports the UNMGL servers will be evaluated,
tested and vendor statements/guaranties will be collected.
LIBROS Consortium Catalog
Hardware - IBM RS6000 and peripherals (UPS, tape backup, RAID drives)
Operating System - AIX
Application software - Innovative Interfaces Inc.
Novell Servers - UNMGL and CAPS
Hardware - HP and peripherals
Operating system

Network Issues
LTD will be dealing with these issues in cooperation with CIRT
Ethernet Network Connections
Network cards, face plates, hubs and switches in wiring closets, network
zone equipment.
Campus network, Internet service provider.
Terminal Servers
ASCII terminals for LIBROS and email access.
Desktop Issues
LTD's approach to these issues will involve a three phase process
Inventory Update - The first phase of the project will involve
updating our inventory database.
Locate each computer, update information in inventory.
Check software against inventory.
Add to inventory: BIOS versions, Software versions.
Test for Y2k compliance.
Software Update - The second phase will be to install software that
will correct problems associated with the year 2000.
Install Y2k fix files.
Get rid of obsolete versions of software (list to be determined)
Delete unnecessary files. (list to be posted).
Upgrade software to Y2k compliant versions, and most recent versions.
Test all installed software.
LTD Action or Follow-up - The third ongoing phase will be to provide
for computer security and the problem-free use of library staff and patrons:
Draw up a monthly maintenance routine for users. Post to Web site
Check settings in Command AV, Fortres, Netscape, etc.
Think of other ways to disseminate info to general users.
As of the 2nd week of March '99:
We are nearing completion of the inventory update phase of the operation.
The second phase of installing the Y2k fix files will begin this week.
What do I do on December 31, 1999? January 1, 2000?
LTD will prepare and distribute an instruction sheet on what the
enduser should do on December 31, 1999 (or when the employee leaves for
winter break) and January 1, 2000.
I have seen several web-sites offering free Y2K testing software. Should
I be testing my PC at work?
No. LTD will be updating our equipment inventory database and testing
all desktop PCs. Software or hardware will be upgraded or replaced as
needed.
What assistance can LTD offer for my PC at home?
LTD will be "packaging" a program with instructions to test your PC
at home to determine its Y2k compliance.
