    Overview

The Y2k problem in computing was brought about partly by shortcomings in programming practices of the past 30 or so years, and partly by the inability of some older personal computers systems to properly detect and indicate the change of date between the dates of December 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000.

The purpose of LTD's Y2k Project is to prepare the General Library (Zimmerman, PML, FAL, CSEL) for the year 2000. It will involve checking all servers, network connections and desktop computers in the library system. This will entail updating the LTD hardware inventory database, performing a maintenance/compliance check on all server and microcomputer systems and preparing the equipment to properly deal with the Y2k problem.

  • Delete unnecessary files. (list to be posted).
  • Upgrade software to Y2k compliant versions, and most recent versions.
  • Test all installed software.

LTD Action or Follow-up - The third ongoing phase will be to provide for computer security and the problem-free use of library staff and patrons:

  • Draw up a monthly maintenance routine for users. Post to Web site
  • Check settings in Command AV, Fortres, Netscape, etc.
  • Think of other ways to disseminate info to general users.
