Explore the role of gender in today's academic world at the University of New Mexico Feminist Research Institute's conference on “Challenges and Opportunities for Women in Higher Education.” The conference will be held on Thursday, March 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Mirage-Thunderbird room of the UNM Student Union Building.
Coming in the wake of Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers' remarks in a Jan. 14 speech suggesting that women tend to have a lower aptitude for science than men, the conference will address obstacles women still face in universities today.
The conference will explore gender issues in the context of academic careers, research, teaching, intercultural mentoring, academic writing and activism. Natasha Kolchevska, director of the Feminist Research Institute, said, “Even as university teaching becomes more feminized, at the top levels it seems that it becomes more corporatized, and addressing some of the issues that arise from these two factors will also be a focus.”
Speakers include Vera Norwood, incoming interim dean of Arts and Sciences, and other UNM administrators and faculty, with a keynote address by Janet Holmgren, president of Mills College in Oakland, Calif.
The Feminist Research Institute supports scholarship on women, gender and sexuality and fosters intellectual community among feminist scholars at UNM through grants, workshops, lectures and interdisciplinary academic support services.
