The book, “Concha Ortiz y Pino: Matriarch of a 300-year old New Mexico Legacy” was written by Kathryn M. Cordova and published by Ana Pacheco of La Herencia. The book examines Ortiz y Pino’s long life and accomplishments in public service to the state.

Ortiz y Pino has been a state legislator and educator, and she has fought for the rights of women, children and the handicapped through much of the 20th century. After graduating from UNM in 1943, she served five U.S. Presidents on national boards, promoting Upward Bound, the handicapped, health and the humanities.

The reading and book signing is part of the Tricentennial Lecture Series sponsored by the Center for Southwest Research. The CSWR is also sponsoring an exhibit on the life of Ortiz y Pino in the west wing of Zimmerman Library. Both the lecture and exhibit are free and open to the public.
